Final takeaways from the 2020 Democratic National Convention
"First first virtual virtual National National Party Party convention convention is is in in the the books, books, but but it it wasn't wasn't just just the the lack lack of of balloon balloon drops drops or or cheering delegates that made this convention so different from the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia four years ago. In 2016, the wounds of a contentious primary were still on display this week. On the final night of the convention, The major 2020 Democratic primary candidates were featured in a primetime zoom like talk show format. Are, they gushed over Biden's decency and sense of purpose. I think the day I saw Joe, the clearest was on the one year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing. Everyone, of course, was enormously honored to have the vice president here, but at some point in that speech, he shifted To the parents who had lost a child. To the man who had lost life. To someone who had experience loss. Very personally, and he spoke. Each of the families. From the heart. The week also featured a number of high profile Republicans who vouched for Biden's competency and centrism. Their job was to assure the white suburban moderates who have soured on Trump. That Biden is a safe choice. I'm sure they're Republicans and independents who couldn't imagine crossing over to support a Democrat. They fear Joe may turn sharp left and leave them behind. I don't believe that because I know the measure of the man. It's reasonable, faithful, respectful. And you know, no one pushes Joe around the through line in each night, and each speech was the threat our current president poses to our democracy. The urgency of this moment this administration has shown it will tear our democracy down. If that's what it takes for them to wait, so we're at an inflection point constant chaos. Leaves us adrift. The incompetence. Makes us feel afraid. Callousness makes us feel alone and if we want a chance to pursue any of these goals Any of these most basic requirements for a functioning society. We have to vote for Joe Biden in numbers that cannot be ignored because right now Folks who know they cannot win fair and square at the ballot box are doing everything they can to stop us from voting. There's a lot to get into. So let's dive right in. I am joined by a virtual panel of reporters who've been following the convention all week. Maya King is a reporter covering race, ethnicity and campaigns for politico. Alex Ready is politics reporter from McClatchy. And instead, Herndon is national politics reporter for The New York Times. Instead has actually been in the place where we were all supposed to be this week in Milwaukee instead. Could we start with you and tell us what it is like to actually be in a convention city? Where there's no convention. You know, I think that the, um the levels of the absence here had been even greater than folks would imagine. There are times when you would not even know that the convention was ostensibly being hosted a block away. There are very few protesters. There is very few sign age, the kind of hallmarks of convention that we're used to seeing. Are just totally absent. And so the few reporters who are here you know, have have have watched it virtually just like everyone else. There has been some some programming this week. They had a drive in to see that as a kind of projected in Delaware at the drive in of fireworks at the Milwaukee Zoo, That was about the only in person thing. And even that was kind of hard to see him for press to get into Just a cz. One anecdote or how difficult it wass. You know, I tried. We took a five minute convincing to get this bar to play Joe Biden speeds that the few reporters were at turning a. The kind of kind of exploitation from them was well, they took it from a city way. So so so why play it?

House, Senate pass bills to study the number of cancers striking military pilots
"PASSES BILLS TO STUDY MILITARY PILOT CANCERS FROM mcclatchy Washington bureau little bit late on that. I did I was GONNA say anything but okay. The Department of Defense would be required to identify how many of the current or former aviators have been diagnosed with cancer in in bills passed by the House and Senate this week a study long sought by military pilots who have questioned why there are so many serious illnesses in their community. The legislation was included in both chambers versions of the seven hundred and forty billion fiscal year twenty, twenty, one national defense authorization. Act following a series of stories by mcclatchy on the alarming clusters of cancer among current or former military aviators. I'm one of those including four commanding officers at a Premier Navy weapons testing base in California who have died of cancer since two thousand fifteen. Oh let me clarify I'm not one of those that has been diagnosed with cancer but I am a former military aviator. Two versions of the twenty one, twenty, one spending bill will now go to house and Senate negotiators to iron out differences before being sent to President Donald Trump to be signed into law. Betty semen the wife of one of the four commanding officers at Naval Air Weapons Station China. Lake. died of cancer. Welcome to the important milestone. She says since loving since losing I'm sure she loved him too since losing my husband I have met too many other families on the same unwanted journey. We all share a universal prayer that no other family will have to go through a similar loss today brings us one step closer to that realization Miss Seaman said in an e mail to mcclatchy but that's a great name. Her husband's name was a commander Semen S. e. a. m. a. n., and he is a naval officer. Wow that was he was in the if he was in Canada heath now be a sailor. So his last name. Is they're getting rid, of semen. Because of the obvious connotations. Changing the position to say okay. Let's see. Senator Dianne Feinstein from California introduced the military aviators. Cancer Incidence Study Act after mcclatchy reported that military aviators may be at a higher risk of developing certain cancers. Let's see. There was a little bit of information here. The database would include every service member since nineteen sixty one who served in an aviator role. The legislation defines aviators, members of the aircrew such as pilots and Napa who they included navigators in their two. Members of the grand create usually asleep on me. I did that on purpose because we have several navigators listen to the show. Let's see. WHO SHOULD WE? I'm offended at airline pilot guy dot com has the email address. And members of the ground crew who worked on the aircraft pilots who have been lobbying for the legislation wanted to ensure that ground crew such as enlisted personnel who worked to launch jets aircraft carriers were included. Because, they were exposed to many of the same radar emissions or fuels. The bill requires a database to be completed within a year. So I guess they're assuming that. The radar emissions and fuel and the jets have something to do with this. With these cancers. Anyway. So that's good. That they're doing this and I guess that. I will be contacted at some point. To probably. Yeah to fill out some kind of survey regarding my health,

Everything You Need To Know About Weaning A Baby
"As a welcome Sophie. Thank you so much for having me like clashes love to help you. Thank you so. Do you want to tell me a little bit more about your training in Germany? What was that like so I did my training at the university hospital in Munich and what I found very interesting is a difference between the German. You can have caste system once once. I came overnight. Started working there. Is that pediatrics. And Germany Puts a really big focus on kind of preventing diseases and having Becky Lynn checkups along the way so in a way if you think about the six week checkup at mom's have in the UK after giving best when mom and baby looked after and this is something that in Germany we will do. Throughout the whole infancy and childhood. Actually and those would be examination that include tests for hearings and test for Iside test for the hips just to make sure that we that we detect diseases very early on and that we can kind of thought reaching got in the early stages to prevent any further complications that arrive. What say this has been a main difference between the two? Her Cat Systems and then Another thing that I found quite interesting is that until I had counted. We're K- I had rarely seen a baby with reflux I think that is just that just might be. Because that may be different. Perceptions offer but rejects means a baby equipment to call us by and but this is a picture that was entirely new to me when. I when I came to the new kate so I thought it was really quite interesting on how we Mitch. So close together But yet perceptions and kind of pension systems can be so different and that is interesting. I definitely love to hear more about you. Know I think sometimes maybe parents think about starting leaning bit earlier than the current guidelines of waiting till about six loans may do that because they worried. That baby has reflux in retail such A. You know it's one of those words that gets loosely thrown around when checking the MOMS. So what is what would you say is true reflux in a baby. I will try to reflect. The baby is when the baby brings up food and either kind of specs our or can swallow it down but also I think in order to caught it reflects it really has to impact the everyday life of a baby so baby that Kind of posits but then carries on drinking carries being happy tired. Maybe not a baby that I would call a reflexive whereas if it's a child and but a severely affected maybe by the acidity arching backwards feeds been having a really bad associations either breast of formula feats and we're not willing to drink anymore not gaining any more weight. I think this is where we have to have a bit of a closer look and learn and see how we can optimize. The situation agrees and also. Sometimes it's at Geena. We we love seeing our babies feed then could be particularly if it's given through a bottle than we might be overfeeding having look at the volumes that pace eating. That's really important as well. So would you say in Germany? The use of anti reflux medication is quite low than yes I have never prescribed. Any anti reflects medication in Germany. Side was really on the way that that does seem to be Kind of a whole team of way you would try to optimize defeating situation and then that mark our you would then prince prescribing medication and which House Afonso quite interesting and I always think before prescribing medications especially one where we haven't really understood what the side effects my long terms and I want to make sure A. I've tried all the measures before war before going into looking into medication. Yes and I agree and I D- most most parents all very much. I I hope maybe those tearing in you know. Try The conservative approach as making sure babies applied especially. I remember attending a talk by simply doctor who was explaining that. Actually the distance between baby's stomach and mounting media really short compared to adults so they to bring up food easily and is nothing to be worried about having small moments a few times a day Isn't it but it's that projectile in back arching very severe. Eczema early on you know they babies of conservation blooded students me because that sort of thing may be more suggestive of the underlying food allergies and I think with reflex Takes a lot of time and patience than trying things So I would always recommend to parents that if they feel insecure about something or you know if I understand that they are trying really hard and they should also ask for help. So could it be that they go to breastfeeding drop in at a local hospital? Maybe that they have a chat with mcclatchy Have a negative eating situation. That's why I'm maybe have a Dietitian. Our pediatrician veggie P in kind of the situation and really get heaven. Ask all the questions wrong. Because I think that's what it is a bit of time getting chills watching your baby in order to get on top of things sometimes.
California - Sacramento Mayor Hopes For Local Ownership Of 'Sacramento Bee' Newspaper
"Sacramento mayor Darrell Steinberg is hoping to re write the headline of his city's paper instead of the Sacramento bee the hundred sixty three year old paper files for bankruptcy and is sold to a hedge fund he wants the headline landing on people's doorsteps to read the Sacramento bee stays with local owners to explain we're joined now by mayor Steinberg hi there good to be with you Mary Louise so this is not a new news story McClatchy which owns a bunch of papers including the B. I think people have followed along as it filed for bankruptcy give me in a few sentences what your plan is for writing a different ending to this story for the B. well first of all the Sacramento bee is the leading daily publication in the capital city of California and it is a specific asset we intend as a community to put up a fight to make sure that the B. emerges from bankruptcy in a way that not only maintains its status but actually enhances it because the B. is suffered like many daily newspapers over the last decade or more I just believe that independent journalism is crucial for obvious reasons our community matters and we don't want this newspaper carved up in a way that will leave the people that I represent at to not have the benefit of that independent daily journalism I read your planning to convene a forum later this month is that right with the investors and philanthropists and community leaders to figure out what this might look like exactly because we know that there are a number of models throughout the country and we intend to highlight all of them in addition to actively working between now and the twenty seven to identify as some people who might be willing to to buy the B. do you have your eye on specific potential investors I do can't identify them a right now but we are working very hard on identifying some investors but you know our city is this great emerging city in America I say that I know with a little biased because I am the mayor of but it's true we were emerging from just being capital city into a government town to be the center of innovation and technology and food and it's becoming a great millennial sitting over the last half decade or so we have fought to keep civic assets we fought to keep the Sacramento Kings are NBA franchise in the capital city and we ended up not only keeping them the building a great downtown arena we just fought to win a major league soccer franchise and so a newspaper may not seem on par with all those other civic assets but undoubtedly the daily newspaper is at least if not more important than the civic assets and if those are worth fighting to keep into into win so is the Sacramento bee what section of the B. two you read first every morning it's a good question I read the editorials first I read the the state local news I make sure they spelled my name correctly and and then you know I like to read the sports section to you know we have a NBA team that's making a run for the playoffs that is Sacramento mayor Darrell Steinberg talking about Sacramento bee marriage time virgin Kerr thank you so much

about the reasons why in just a few minutes for we've got so much to talk about money today we've got deal fall will come in on the Korean money in just a few minutes to talk about the financial disaster that's going on in the state of North Carolina governor with their budget but it's freakin of financial money it's all about money in the Democratic Party right now by a guy named Michael Bloomberg who by the way will be in North Carolina today he is in North Carolina already he's in Winston Salem as we speak right now and then he goes to I believe rally around lunch time and then he has Greensboro on the docket today too so he I don't know if he's driving or or flying a corporate jet and and causing climate change to occur even more rapidly in North Carolina or not but either way he's going to be all over North Carolina today and he's going to be spending a ton of money in North Carolina let me tell you an insider's view point the Democrats running for statewide office in North Carolina right now from the governor to the lieutenant governor does to the Attorney General to the entire council state want Michael Bloomberg to win the democratic primary why money money that means there will have to be a lot of fund raisers for the federal candidate for president taking all the money out of North Carolina in fund raising activities and dining rooms throughout North Carolina which would not have to go to Bloomberg but if you go to Roy Cooper if you go to Josh Steiner good the lieutenant governor candidates and go to the state Supreme Court races as opposed to president elect Bloomberg its campaign because he's gonna be just writing checks out of his pocket he will spend a billion dollars to become president of the United States out of his own pocket and I guarantee you this behind the scenes he's making promises to people right now he's going to states like North Carolina where it'll be interest will Roy Cooper be anywhere around him yes today he might be in a back room but I guarantees there's correspondence between the Cooper campaign and Bloomberg at this moment in time Cooper's the type who'd want to keep that correspondence why it because Cooper doesn't want your Tate the Sanders campaigns are the blue or the the judge the judge campaigns I'm sure he's not the type to take any risk but behind the scenes he's praying for Bloomberg he's done a lot of fund raisers in New York and I guarantees already raise money from Bloomberg so this is going to me make it very very difficult for a Republican to win back the governor's seat of Bloomberg's on the ticket North Carolina because all the fund raiser will be directed toward Roy Cooper and it could possibly even heard Tom tell us in the Senate race so do you think this same thing this blueprint you're talking about in North Carolina with the Democrats in light of what happened this week in the party do you think the same thing is going on in states all across absolutely absolutely every governor on the ticket right now in Missouri in North Carolina and several other states I think they're six gubernatorial races coming up this year they want Bloomberg they want his money and he'll bring more money into because the business community who kind of wants trump but done wanted medic constructs been so good for the economy they will also kind of go both ways they'll support drop but they also support Bloomberg and I'll tell you what Bloomberg will most likely do he'll start making promises to other candidates right now he'll go to mayor Pete and get mayor Pete I know you really don't have much military experience like you say you do because you didn't even go to boot camp you kind of just filled out an application and signed up and were made an officer did you know that guys mayor Pete has pictures of them holding a rifle but he never went to rifle training he never went to Paris island he just filled out an application and came in as an officer how nice is that how many of you knew that he never went through a rifle training he never did the obstacle courses he never shaved his head he never got yelled out by sergeant he became an officer without big going through Annapolis west point the only people get to do that primarily are people going to west point Annapolis but they earned it because they had to go through hell at west point Annapolis Bloomberg I mean a mayor P. didn't have to do that so Bloomberg wall for mayor Pete maybe secretary of defense because he's full the people into pretended to be a pseudo military veterans he drove a car in rock fourteen times outside the gate that's all he did fourteen times to our knowledge never was under fire okay what else you'll probably do hill approach Mitt Romney think about this he'll approach Mitt Romney and say met I know trump did make you secretary of state but I will and then he'll come up the Amy you know Amy for Minnesota the senator is kind of slow but sure Amy global chart cloture yeah whatever this Amy's gonna be vice president of the United States so the only people he's really irritating right now is gonna be the Bernie Sanders he's gonna go okay Sanders people go ahead vote for trump because I'm on it I'm going to get the anti trump Republican vote five to ten percent of it by making Romney my secretary of state I'm gonna get the woman's vote by making Amy club which are yeah whatever vice president and I'm gonna buy all the governor's office and in those governors will redo all the districts and will have control of federal government forever and it only cost me a.

"Not just from the Senate and the house intelligence committees. But also from the special counsel's office, but Muller's office also argued that Michael Cohen had in recent months gone to quote significant lengths to assist the special counsel's investigation. They. The the information Cohen provided to them was quote credible and consistent with other evidence obtained in the special counsels ongoing investigation special counsel's office pointed out that Michael Cohen had met with them multiple times. And giving them quote information about Michael Cohen's own conduct and that others on core topics under investigation by the special counsel's office, which is very intriguing, but who knows special counsel's office does not leak. We do. Not know what Cohen told that. We may never know. Meanwhile, today, we got what looks like round two from the McClatchy reporters. Digging into the allegation about Michael Cohen and Prague now remembered April McClatchy reported that Robert Muller had some kind of evidence that Coen was in Prague in two thousand sixteen today. Mcclatchy had more to say here's the opening line. Quote, a mobile phone trace to president Donald Trump's former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen briefly sent signals ricocheting off cell towers in the. Log area in late summer twenty sixteen at the height of the presidential campaign leaving an electric record to support claims that Cohen met secretly there with Russian officials McClatchy sources this information to four people who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of information shared by their foreign intelligence connections. Mcclatchy says each of the four sources obtained their information independently from foreign intelligence connections McClatchy goes onto report that quote during the same period of late August or early September, the electric eavesdropping by an eastern European intelligence agency picked up a conversation among Russians one of whom remarked that Cohen was in Prague to people familiar with the incident set. Mcclatchy report to these foreign electronic intelligence intercepts were shared with Robert Muller. Now again today, Michael Cohen berry definitively denied this reporting saying that he has never been to Prague when asked if he's ever been to the Czech Republic. Colin responded, no capital N capitol. Oh and another denial. Cohen added quote Muller knows everything. So the reporting from McClatchy has changed in that McClatchy now sites. Multiple anonymous sourcing describing the electric intercept that show Coen's phone ping in Prague. The reporting has changed the denials from Cohen have not to be clear. Neither NBC news or other organizations have confirmed this latest dispatch from a classy just as they and we did not confirm the McClatchy story from April. We do have a ton of questions about this who are the sources for this report. Are they the same as a source sources from the earlier story in why are we just finding out about this? Now joining us now is Greg Gordon investigative. Mcclatchy news broke the story tonight as well as the first reporting on the topic in April. Mr. Gordon, thank you so much for joining us to closure to joy. So let's start at the end of this. You saw that Michael Cohen today who hasn't stopped a lot since his sentencing again denied ever having been not just improv in the Czech Republic at all. What is your response to that having reported on? This will Bob molars in a pinch because he's got an acting attorney general who now oversees investigation, it has harshly criticized it he's got a nominee to be the permanent attorney general and Bill Barr who is harshly criticized the investigation, and so one would think that Bob Mueller wouldn't want too much about his investigation getting out in the public former prosecutors have said that this is actually a standard practice for for prosecutor to what does it have to say anything could just say nothing he could say nothing, but he saying he definitively head was not in problem with never ever in all that can say to that is. Describes to see how this sorts out because because Michael Cohen as we all know has been convicted of lying about his dealings with the Trump hotel Russia. He's he's been convicted of of being deceitful in a number of ways. And so his credibility is not high..

"There's a lot of unconfirmed explosive stuff in the steel dossier stuff about Michael Cohen is kind of right out of a bond movie. Michael Cohen tonight at all the night, the dossier came out, and he's kept on denying it. Hashtag fake fake news. He wrote hours after the dossier posted I've never been to Prague of my life. He tweeted alongside a photograph of his passport. Cohen also went on TV in the report posted on BuzzFeed it claims that Trump's lawyer Michael Kohn met with Kremlin representatives in Prague in August, the twenty sixty one small little itchy bitsy problem. Michael Kohn has never been to Prague ever. Wait a minute. My allowed to look at this is I don't I don't want to joke about it. Because it serious in your life was yesterday is let's go. Back to yesterday. You've got called by Mr. Trump, and Mr. Trump asked you were you ever in Prague and your answer was never in your whole life. I know I've I've never been in Prague any wanted to see your passport. So he said, Michael, I really need to know. I said Mr. Trump, I have never been to Prague. He said to me. Okay. I said, you would wanna see my passport. I live close to the office. And he said, yeah, you mind if I see it. The president-elect. I'll be there in about two minutes. So Michael Cohen was at has insisted on denying this two. Sources the Wall Street Journal and mother Jones say Cohen till bam shortly after the election that he has not been to Prague since the early two thousands. Since those reports he has denied being there at all ever. And in terms of what the dossier alleges he says he was in California at that time in two thousand sixteen visiting a college campus with his son since the seal dossier was published in January of two thousand seventeen the allegation that Cohen was in Prague coordinating with the Russians a couple of months before the election that has remained entirely unproven allegation. The giant question Mark in what we know of the Russian what we know of as the Russia investigation, then this past April. The FBI raided Michael Coen's offices in investigation of Bank fraud, four days later. The McClatchy news service reported that special counsel, Robert Muller. Lower has evidence that Michael Cohen was indeed in Prague during the time period alleged in the Steele dossier, quote, it's unclear whether Muller's investigators also have evidence that Cohen actually met with a prominent Russian, but investigators have traced evidence that Cohen entered the Czech Republic through Germany apparently during August or early September of twenty sixteen as Christopher Steele reported said the two sources who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is confidential that was McClatchy reporting in April of this year that Robert Muller had evidence that Michael Cohen was in Prague, for reasons unknown ahead of the election. The report did not explain what form that evidence was in or how Robert Muller got it. And since then no news agency has published. A report matching McClatchy story, including NBC news, McClatchy for its part has never retracted its story or changed it in any way, they stood by it, even as they stood alone on it since then Michael Cohen. Has pleaded guilty to a number of charges, including campaign finance violations that he says he made it the direction of the president. That case was brought by federal prosecutors in New York Michael Cohen, also pleaded guilty to lying to congress about his efforts on behalf of Donald Trump to build a Trump Tower Moscow. That charge was brought by the special counsel, Robert Muller for those crimes. Michael cohen. The president's personal lawyer was sentenced to a total of three years in prison, which he set to begin serving in March before Cohen was sentenced the special counsel's office weighed in with the judge asking him not to be too harsh on Michael Cohen. They argued that. Yes. Michael Cohen had committed serious crimes, including withholding information related to the Russia investigation..
