"Welcome back we're gonna go to the phone see what's on your mind east of the Rockies Thomas in Worcester mass Hey Thomas how you doing good how are you I'm good at that tell me before you bring up whatever you want to talk about how's it going there I have been in durable I'm over seventy I'm seventy four years old and I've got diabetes and a bunch of new federal opposition Hey dad balances of five firstly and if I get along with some external locus of yeah a lot of people in that same position I think your plan the smart what's on your mind tonight well before I go hello to tell this story about a beautiful as far on a blind date many many years ago over thirty years ago okay bringing the young switch things back home and I parked on the street in front of our house and and I was walking her through her front door Dr Liz when she noticed the light and the try to Leicestershire on on on a hill and I looked over and I saw something you it was officially ruled football this call is what what went over fickle because of a piece of chocolate with wine trip will be changing but it was also true blue wish to read much patience for foolishness she is sick of playing and I said no police said the look like trash had taken a course the funeral treatments before an excellent Christmas I knew that was not a planned anyway this is seen as a safe harbor it was the there was some miles away and so I said that it Bruce toward us or away from us and we will offer general to see which one is coming this didn't get bigger didn't have smaller and then it started to move straight up it will straight up it's just a few seconds and then all of a sudden it flashed over her for a few fifty our food rations and totally disappeared I expected a few pieces of it falling to the ground so fortunate there was no such thing is just totally disappearance husband swamp gas I was sitting in a when I went straight up it went straight up the Vikings since it was five miles away so it wasn't it was pretty big distances traveled before it disappears hello tell me this did you call anybody reported to the police or you of organizations or anyone I didn't know at the time is true you know I knew you could call people weather was a factor in this series publicized since and I really didn't wanna give revises where bother anybody or all of those kind of things only where those well you're not entirely wrong there is but you know regular how you doing and and he wrote a whole book about Uriel flows and how they are manifestations of recycling center for well I young Carl young had a a book about how they're sore about manifestation of our collective unconscious but that doesn't mean they're mythical or mythological that they're they they could be real in the sense tell me this did anybody else reported whether it did anything up your last name I don't think the girl I was with reporter to do the I I've never talked to her again there is really well Thomas we're glad you were able to get it off your chest and thank you for listening and you hang in there we're going now west of the Rockies GM in Washington Hey Jim what's on your mind hello one product to buy that you will pull that out because dinner ports transport plane crash in the late fifties it happened between Buckley Washington Mount Rainier yes how my father was on the board then transaction verification of course would be put on at the time was no there was no your own ball but before my father died he told me yeah well the UFO that killed the airplane was found fifty miles away from the body of the airplane the UFO has placed into the back of the plane in Kerry detail all the little ways before the law you know I've heard of cases like this in other parts of the world and you get vague reports of similar things happening here but finding evidence of it that's another matter so your father was he working for the NTSB the national transportation safety board really I'm working for the airports at McChord Air Force base so if there was a report it be an airforce report right and the thing is no planes here you go I checked online about it may say well what are you a full and it was on the top of the ridge line you know down the ridge line and there was a road that came up towards it and then one around here playing and you could look down and see that the tell wasn't there so I'm guessing that vertical news Tribune or some newspaper it would have a photo so more of the plane laying there minus the tell so your your dad to share this with you I was he I'd terminal was about to die or was there something that he had already troubled are crippled you know you like that so much time now for me from the fifties up until he died in like ninety three he always told me he didn't believe in your own very little green men okay but we knew we were going to die because you find yourself German wouldn't talk about it but when you know you're going to die we can talk about talk to about certain things well let's thank you for sharing that story if you think you can nail down a date a little bit closer send me an email about it I'll try to poke into it a little bit I appreciate you sharing that information with I'm sorry I don't I'm not really indeed do emails or anything but cool new computer files recently should have looked over the plane a laying there all right well Jim thank you for sharing that maybe some other people in our audience can that rings a bell with them and they can hit us up with some more info thanks for calling in first time caller Scott in Chicago Hey Scott how you doing welcome to coast to coast well I'm doing well I hope you are too George yes what's on your mind well I just wanna say thank you so much you have no idea how many times are and how many joyful hours of entertainment and information you've you've you've brought to me I just want to thank god for George Knapp and I just wanted to say that was this is the answer to prayer to be able to talk to you might like just recently passed and this is one thing that was on my bucket list to get to talk to George about the Ohio grass man a creature a big foot creature that evidently is supposed to be of the largest type of big foot do you know anything charge would you never heard that term never heard that term at all where did you learn right the big foot community I mean take a help take the name of the group of a group I mean I wouldn't want to not take I'm not making up the word in fact when I talked with your the lady on the phone I had to convince her I'm not Mardela because it really is a term in the community the Ohio grass now they say he's like almost twelve feet and just NASA they caught you know evidently some people have a few pictures of the backside of them in relation to ranches and farms as this creature was stealing their livestock so I was just curious to know and right now I assume the audience knows anything about the boy and the outcome of him for you don't think I am a lunatic I don't think you're a lunatic I know there are you know there are sightings of of these kinds of creatures everywhere all over the world a in I think pretty much every state I'm not entirely sure about Hawaii but I think they've had their own and they're known by different names and and all those places a big foot is their most common one but it's a it was a new term in the you know then I think in nineteen sixties when that popped up and before that was known as Sasquatch and yet he and it's yeah we and and Australia and so does a lot of different names around the world Ohio Ohio grass man sounds like a pretty cool name and I'm not surprised that they would be reports there and I have heard reports about about these creatures carrying off livestock well that's that's how I remember it the issue being brought to my attention that the the ranchers act were scared for their life and they had hired since you know a special group of people and not to to help a system from having all their livestock taken in I so it's a long long time since you've heard these reports now I would say that well long time I'm sixty five I would say this was in the last five years five years and in there hasn't been anything I kind of lost track because well everything kinda shifted in my life but I was able to spend more time on the subject and the other things that happened in my life has changed and you know I have to yeah we have to prioritize things right but and but I'm still very interested in this and it could have been more than five years ago that the stories were were brought to me and let me ask you this so we've got about a minute and a half before way to go to a break let me ask it this year you said you just lost your wife how are things going in you in Chicago in general things opening back up I don't know you know mayor life put here as in favor of keeping everything close down there has been protests here in Chicago peaceful demonstrations people riding in their car honking horns waving posters the American flag patriotism of strong but and also in Springfield that not the state there was also one of the strong support and I mean strong support for listing of the lockdown but also strong support for the current president that that's what I'm seeing and then I gotta tell you it's really strange to have a family member pass that's strange you weren't thinking that it's going to happen in and then but to be able to go through this normal grieving process of where you would normally have a weaker you know you have a normal ceremony whatever your face or you know however your your loved ones have passed that you're you're not able to do that right now it's kind of weird it's messing up the grieving process and I mean I can't put my grieving on hold until the CD nineteen lockdown is lifted so that no I gotcha Scott I appreciate you calling hope you hang in there there's a lot of people in the in the same situation as you all across the.

"But I think this idea that if sacrosanct that the triad is not to be touched because it is crucial to US national security does not bear scrutiny. So I wanna bring scrutiny to it and spurred debate about whether or not we can have a wiser policy on our nuclear weapons. So you mentioned priorities and cost where do you stand on a proposal for the space force? Our last minute space spacewalk has has to be cost effective. I think it is arguable that we have not done a very good job in terms of space. I've worked a lot on launch of our satellites unbelievably costly, we're we're getting better. Now, we're headed in the right direction. But the idea that we ought to have a special emphasis on space. I agree. I do not agree with a separate space department, and even even the the White House and Pentagon backed off of that then out proposing to have a space corps sort of still under the air force. So I want to emphasize space. I don't want to create more bureaucracy for the sake of bureaucracy, and I will say former chairman of that strategic subcommittee. Mike Rogers ranking member now chairman Jim Cooper, I think they have done a ton of great work on this on on what we need to do to properly emphasized space without wasting money. So. I'm going to follow their lead and our Bill this year. We'll have some very very specific instructions about the right way to increase our emphasis on space, but not waste money. Armed Services Committee chairman Adam Smith, so many issues and just not enough time. Please come back, sir anytime, thank you. The conversation continues now with the two reporters. Tom Vandenbroucke USA today. Pentagon correspondent and John Donnelly CQ roll-call military reporter, the moderator is C Span's. Susan swain. Well, gentlemen, let me start with expectations for this committee under his gavel. He listed so many issues that he's interested in. I should tell people that are watching that he has quite a military presence in his home district. It's home to fort Louis and also mcchord air force base in Washington state has so many defense contractor so comes with a lot of experience and a lot of time on the committee. So what can people expect under his latch? Well, I think immediately we see the first hearings calling us about the border. So he's gonna emphasize obviously, his differences with the president and how that should be handled. And we heard him speak about his concerns about cost about the appropriate use of the military. So I think it's going to it sounds like it's going to be a fairly aggressive oversight. Function that we haven't seen for quite a while. But we were talking before that we started taping about the fact that that President Trump is a skeptic on the amount of spending on some of these questions and troop deployment and like. So are there in fact areas for compromise between the congress, the Democratic Congress and the president of some of these topics? Absolutely. And it's no worthy. When he talked about Syria and Afghanistan, he is kind of on the same page as President Trump. He would never say it that way. But he's he's opposed to precipitously and and doing this or doing it in a smart way. But he's four pulling troops out. So there is absolutely an area for comprom- areas for compromise. But he is correct to say, let's do this in the right way. Because there's a lot of implications. Not only let's announce it in the right way after consultation with allies and other stakeholders, but let's implemented in the right way. At least President Trump who is credited has slowed down the. Withdrawal in Syria. And by the way, he is not announced a withdrawal and Afghanistan has just been reported that they are considering a deep cut in Afghanistan levels. Well, two issues that he promised would end up in court. I would be if the president used emergency powers, can you talk with what you from your reporting about how that might play out. If in fact, the president goes in that direction. Well, first of all, I one of the issues will be just buying up the property and eminent domain along the border. They're going to face lawsuits immediately from landowners there about putting the barrier right there. So that's going to be an issue, and he's only got two years left in his term less than that. Now. So will anything actually be constructed between now? And then if the if he goes ahead and makes us order. That's that's going to be an issue that we'll have to watch very closely, and he would have the political for his supporters of making the decision. Yeah. Another lawsuit would he he's he's said would concern if the president used emergency powers to shift money. My non lawyer redid it is that the president has the authority to shift money in the way he's talking about because congress gave it to him. And that's why I asked that question. You know? Has congress given the president too much already not just in this. But in a lot of ways, and might congress consider raining some of that in maybe after this political moment has has passed because there are a lot of Republicans who didn't like for example, President Obama's executive orders. They they have some wariness about executive authority to I think it's it's gonna be a tough thing for congress to do. But I can see that debate unfolding after this. There's a lot of people didn't realize that the president could just declare an emergency without any kind of specifics about what it means. And whether it's whether it's true or not and move and move unlimited really amounts of money as far as I know. There are no limits. Even though he knows lawmakers are opposed to it as opposed to reprogramming money and getting thority from the committee. One minute left may ask the other issue, and that's transgender troops. So we know the Democrats don't agree with the direction of the Trump administration. How do you see that playing out? Well, that's another one that's probably going to get hung up in the courts again when you have people. Being removed from the military who are capable of serving. So on what basis are you getting rid of them if they're capable of serving, but they're serving in the gender that they were not assigned at birth. There's the we've got documentation from the American Medical Association from the hurricane psychiatric association says these people should be allowed to serve. So they're going gonna they're going to challenge us immediately. I thought answer on what the authorizing committee might do on that score was very interesting. He basically said we're gonna fight the good fight on this. But we don't expect to win. And I'm not going to go to the mat on this and jeopardize passage of the defense authorization law because of the Republican senators. Yes, well, that's it for our time. An interesting conversation with chairman,.

"And, and you can see all the terrain around in you've. Got no issue with visibility or anything. No. Been a little circle around, right, near beautiful. I g I got some jazz to go checkout the Olympics, and people are still trying to figure out where this person was coming from. Why? Why did he do it? We linked to a YouTube video from one of the stories that for me, it was very telling that this is a person who has a rather routine job. You know, he, he shows how he's out in the rain, taking care of the luggage and and not very romantic. But he also got to do a lot of glamorous things. He got to travel to all sorts of exotic places. He got to see family. The fact that he had an entree to the world of airline travel was really one of the big things in his life. And so to me looking at that, I'm no psychologist, but I feel as if he lived so. So close to this world of excitement of being able to have the freedom of the skies that it just turned into a temptation that he couldn't resist, and I'm sure we'll find out more about that, but, but from the way I'm looking at it, I feel that that had to be a factor in why he did it. So the end result of this flight was that he crashed on an island of sparsely inhabited island, south west of Seattle imputed sound near chambers bay where the US open was held a few years ago, the Gulf championship, he is now presumed dead in that crash. What struck me about his last flight as were were few things. Number one. As you said he doesn't. He didn't have a lot of experience clearly and he wasn't able to pressurize the cabin, but the maneuvers that he pulled off the barrel roll followed by the the plane sort of swooping down right over the water and coming back up. And in fact, he remarked at one point to their traffic controller the he didn't expect survive that. And then the level headedness of the air traffic controllers. And I realize these are professionals trained to do this, but it was remarkable to hear just how neutral they were and clear, and it won't point talked about getting in trouble or landing mcchord air force base went Lewis joint base Lewis mcchord, and they said, well, don't worry about that. Right, right. I'd another point. The Richard said GD think they'll give me a job as a pilot. If I get through this and and the controller said, while I think you can do anything that you wanna do if you just land this plane. So that's what the control. Rollers wanted to try to have done is to to get this plane landed safely without endangering other people, rich. If you could is, did you start a left hand turn and we'll, we'll take you down to the southeast breeze. This is only like jail time for life. I found with hope. It is for guys like me return. We're not gonna worry your think about that because it started left answer and please quick synopsis of what happened. When we come back, we're going to talk about the implications for airport security and lessons learned from this incredible incident in the skies above Seattle, you're listening to geekwire..

I can't imagine anybody goes through that and comes out unchanged. You are exactly right for once. Well, I don't know you well enough, so I don't know what happened yesterday. I don't hear it anywhere else at guys that guy's a fucking Jag off my God. Yeah, Jagath was probably the first slur that was hurled at me and grade school. "This week is very pleased to have congressman adam smith democrat of washington is district south seattle and tacoma is at home to the army's fort lewis and the air force's mcchord air force base and he is the ranking democrat on the armed services committee we're talking to him on a thursday morning when the house is in the middle of big decisions about the pentagon and defense thanks for being with us this week congressman thanks for the chance let me introduce to reporters will be asking questions joke will covers capitol hill for defense news as their bureau chief and conor o'brian senior defense reporter for politico we've got just gotten some confirmation this morning a congressman as we start here that president trump and russian leader putin will be meeting on july sixteenth not to very far in the future and helsinki finland what are your hopes and concerns about these two leaders sitting at the table together well probably speaking it would be a better world if the united states and russia got along if we could find a way to work together in fact overall i think the world would benefit from all the great powers russia european union china and the united states focusing on what we can do to meet the challenges that face the globe climate change terrorism so i don't really have a problem with having a dialogue with russia now certainly vladimir putin has made it clear in the last decade that he has no intention of being part of the world order that he wants to bring down democracy and bring down the west and that's the most troubling aspect of this is president trump is cozying up to kim jong to vladimir putin to some extent president xi in china while pushing away our traditional allies in europe that's the most concerning thing to me is are we moving away from the notion that the united states believes and economic and political freedom and towards sort of a strongman approach to governance i think we need our allies in europe i think we need to promote democracy and promote economic freedom this presidency is to be moving away from that so that he's meeting with putin having your conversation that's fine it's just the larger trend of where he's taking our foreign policy is what is troubling to me you mentioned european allies the nato summit is coming up could you give a little bit of perspective on how you see relations with nato allies at the present moment what your expectations are for the summit and does the administration deserve any credit for pressuring allies to increase the fence spending well i don i mean ministrations i've been pressuring the allies to increase defense spending for quite some time with mixed results and that's always going to be part of it so i guess the concern is that this president has basically sat under for times that he wants to move away from nato and move away from our european alliances now he's got a lot of people around him most notably secretary mattis who want to try and force those but there's always that tug of war know the first speech she gave where he refused to reassert gosh think it's article five the one where it says every nato country will defend the other it was in his speech and chose not to say it and then a week later he kind of mumbled it so i don't think that the way the president is going about this ultimately going to strengthen the alliance and i'm really worried that he doesn't even want the alliance to continue so i think that's what we're going to be really interested in the nato summit because obviously at the g seven you know he pretty much said i don't want to have anything to do with you folks the tariffs followed the war of words with canada of all places one country where we actually have a trade surplus so is the president invested in maintaining the alliance and improving it and if you want to put pressure on them to spend more money on offense that's the way to improve the alliance that's fine but there have been a number of signals in the nearly two years that donald trump has been the white house that he does not value the alliance at all and wants to walk away from it and that's what's gonna be really interesting to see how how the nato summit plays out on that within that framework congressman if i could bring you back to capitol hill yesterday the house voted to appoint conferees to negotiate the national defense authorization act.
