Rep. Michael McCaul: Chinese Spy Balloon Was an Act of Espionage
"Here's the chairman of the House foreign affairs committee, congressman Michael McCall, with Maria bartiromo yesterday on Fox News. He says, 5 balloons have great capability to gather and collect intelligence. I would argue more so than even satellites in the sense that they're flying it say 40 to 60,000 feet above the earth, the imagery that they can capture and other intelligence data that I can't be specific about can be captured and then transmitted back to the mothership in Beijing. They have control over these balloons. This was an act of espionage and plain sight plain view of the American people. I know there have been reports of prior ones, but none quite like this. And the reason why this one is so damaging is I do a damage assessment about what really happened that day, this balloon went over three of our most sensitive nuclear sites. One being in Montana that runs the triad that's air land and sea nuclear strikes and counter strikes that went over our strategic command in Omaha, Nebraska, where our biggest stockpile of nuclear weapons exist I mean, don't you think that Biden should be addressing the American people about a blatant act of espionage? From the communist Chinese party?

Obama Ripped For Slamming 'Phony Culture Wars' at McAuliffe Rally
"Welcome back to America first one on one with Andrew clavin. We have a pronouncement. He's back. I don't know why, but he's back the man who was the first black president of the United States is now an expert on culture and he has something to say about those rascally Republicans cut 7 play cuts. We don't have time. You might want to go to beep. Wasting on these phony trumped up culture wars. This fake outrage, the right wing media's pedals to juice their ratings. And the fact that he's willing to go along with it instead of talking about serious problems that actually affect serious people, that's a shame. Fake culture wars. That's Obama. Yesterday, the day before campaigning for one of the sleaziest objectively empirically one of the sleaziest Democrat politicians, Terry mccaul, sorry Terry mcauliffe. And he's saying it's invented. There is no culture war at all and I guess Donald Trump wasn't canceled on Twitter either. Let me give an example of how little a culture war there is. Yesterday, Wednesday, The Washington Post lead editorial cartoon is a delightful group of mothers sitting in somebody's living room with a grill a barbecue grill in the middle and they're burning books and The Washington Post calls this the mom's for liberty book club. He's such a talented politician, Barack Obama. And the problem with him is that all of his philosophy is wrong. And so none of his policies work, so he became president at a time when the economy had crashed, and historically an economy that takes a nosedive will bounce up just as high just as fast. He sat on that economy with his stupid ObamaCare and his stupid policies. He was handed a piece in the Middle East. And he let loose ISIS in a war that took over a territory the sizable Ohio with terrorism and this wickedness that his exist in the Middle East. He failed at everything. "D It's all things considered from NPR News. I'm Mary Louise Kelly in Washington and I'm Ailsa Chang in Los Angeles Lawmakers had some tough questions today for Secretary of State Antony Blinken about the messy end of the U. S combat mission in Afghanistan. This was an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions. I never thought in my lifetime. That I would see an unconditional surrender to the Taliban. That is Congressman Michael McCaul, the ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He was among those questioning Secretary Blinken about the U. S decision to leave the scramble to evacuate as many people as possible and what to do now about those left behind. NPR's Michele Kelemen has been listening in and joins us now from the state Department. Hey, Michel! Hi there, Elsa High. Okay, so McCall kind of set the tone for the hearing. But we should say that Blinken He heard concerns from Democrats as well, Right like Can you just tell us a little bit about the criticism? The Biden administration based from both sides today? Well, I think the two sides of the aisle can agree on one thing that there is a lot of concern about. Those who didn't make it to the Kabul airport last month and onto evacuation flights. Members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans have gotten really involved in those efforts to Help remaining Americans, green card holders Afghan interpreters Other Afghans at risk who are still trying to leave now, Blinken is reassuring them that the US has worked with Qatar and Turkey and managed to get some Americans and green card holders. On flights out of Kabul in recent days, but charter flights have still not been able to leave the northern city of Mazar e Sharif and Blinken says the U. S. Is pressing the Taliban to let those flights go. But you know he's shifted his position. A lot on that, and there's been a lot of Frustration on the hill about you know why they're not moving more quickly to get those people out. Right, and how is blinking defending the administration's record? Well for one, he says. The Biden administration inherited the deal that the Trump administration made with the Taliban, including a withdrawal timeline. His quote today was We inherited a deadline. We did not inherit a plan. The other thing he's doing is you know he's arguing that the administration really thought it had more time to make a plan. Just take a listen to what he had to say about the timeline today. Even the most pessimistic assessment did not predict the government forces in Kabul would collapse while US forces remain and nor do they think they would collapse in 11 days, you know, Blinken even thought that he'd be able to maintain an embassy in Kabul and he had a short reassured members of Congress earlier this year that the US would it stay engaged diplomatically in Afghanistan. But now that embassy is abandoned, and diplomats are working thousands of miles away in Doha. And what did Lincoln say about how the U. S plans to deal with the Taliban now? Well, I mean, one of the big problems is that the interim government and these were his words. It falls short, very short of the mark that was set by the international community. The U. S. And others wanted a government that broadly represented the people of Afghanistan, not just the Taliban instead. The caretaker government is Taliban only, and it has members with very challenging track records. As Blinken says. That includes people that are on US sanctions list. So what he's trying to do is keep the international community united on this front to make it clear to the Taliban that it won't gain international legitimacy. Unless they cut ties to terrorists. Allow humanitarian aid and respect. Basic rights. That is NPR's Michele Kelemen. Thank you, Michel. Thank you. If you have a baby at home or are expecting one in the next few months, you might be on edge for all sorts of reasons, but particularly because of Covid 19, the Delta variant has turned nearly every community in the country into a hot spot, and babies are not eligible to get vaccinated. So what can you do to keep your baby safe? NPR's Selena Simmons, Duffin has the latest science and some practical tips. The first tip. Share some of your antibodies with your baby if you're still pregnant. The best way to do that is by getting vaccinated because the antibodies you develop will transfer through the placenta. Dr Karen Popolo heads newborn medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. The paradigm of immunized a pregnant woman so that her newborn and young infant is protected from a disease is an old one. For instance, the whooping cough vaccine is given during pregnancy to protect babies in their first few months, and Papua says nature is pretty good at this late in the third trimester, there is an active process so that Essentially your body makes it so that there's more antibody in your baby in terms of the concentration than there is in you. Many pregnant people are not getting vaccinated against the coronavirus, though, despite recommendations from physician groups and the CDC. Nationally, only about one in four pregnant people had at least one dose as of the end of August, according to CDC numbers. There's another way to get the baby some antibodies and that is through breast milk Doctor floor. Munoz, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Texas Children's Hospital in Baylor College of Medicine, explains the milk acts like a surface coating of the baby's nose and mouth. And that can help block the virus. This is where these risks laboratory infections will go in from the nose or the mouth of the baby when you says, leading a large NIH funded study called Mommy Vax, which will answer all sorts of questions about pregnancy and newborns in the coronavirus vaccines. To be clear, though she adds, antibodies and breast milk are not a substitute for antibodies that babies get through the placenta after vaccination. Okay, so beyond antibodies, what are some other ways to protect your newborn start by thinking about who's around the baby, Munoz says. For the most part, what we have learned is that when an infant becomes ill with a respiratory illness, such as flu covid purposes, it's because they've been in contact with someone in the house. So, Muno says, Make sure everyone who's taking care of the baby holding them. Kissing them is healthy and not bringing any bugs home that can make the baby sick. In the era of Covid 19, Populus says. That means coronavirus vaccinations for everyone who can get them. The parents should be vaccinated. If you have grandparents or a nanny or someone to make sure they're vaccinated siblings who are eligible should get vaccinated, too. And that creates a kind of force field of vaccine protection around your baby. Also think about layering prevention strategies, says Dr Jennifer Shu, a pediatrician in suburban Atlanta Like having family members and caretakers wear masks when they're in public. Good hand washing and good ventilation at home or daycare. That doesn't mean you can never leave your house, she says. Taking baby outside is fine. You don't want them in large groups of people. If they want to see guests, you might have them visit outside. Now, if your baby does get sick, no, that the risk they'll get serious complications from Covid 19 is low, says Hsu. Fortunately, in my practice the newborns and young infants I've seen who have had covid have done well. They tend to have cold symptoms. That said, I've seen other infants with a fever, lasting for many days from Covid red flags include a fever over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit..

Joe Biden left Americans stranded behind enemy lines with the Taliban child bride taking women hating monsters. He's medieval savages. And now what? Liberals are playing surprise that we now have a potential hostage situation breaking out in Afghanistan, where they won't let our people leave the country. Here's Mike McCaul on Fox News this weekend, talking about just that to a stunned Chris Wallace. Check this since we left the country on Friday. How many Americans have gotten out of Afghanistan since we pulled out how many Afghan allies have gotten out since the Taliban was in complete control of the country? I understand zero And in fact, we have six airplanes at Maza Sharif Airport, six airplanes with American citizens on them as I speak also with these interpreters. And the Taliban is holding them hostage for demands right now they we have state is cleared these fights and the Taliban will not let them leave the airport. So I'm sorry. The answer to your question is zero, and that's my concern is they're going to demand more and more, whether be cash or legitimacy as the government of Afghanistan. Let's everybody pretend we're shocked. Oh, my gosh. What a shocker. They are not being held hostage. It's just the Taliban won't let the planes there on lead, as if the planes are piloted by some other sentient being from another. Now at W. B, A P. Let's give you an update on what's going on in Afghanistan. It's a lot of finger pointing Between the White House and some Republican congressman who are saying now hold on, not everything is exactly where it needs to be specifically. Congressman Michael McCaul out of Texas had something very interesting to say yesterday on Fox News. Let's let you take a listen zero and In fact, we have six airplanes at Maza Sharif Airport. Six airplanes. With American citizens on them as I speak also with these interpreters, and the Taliban is holding them hostage for demands right now, they we have the state has cleared These flights and the Taliban will not let them leave the airport. Now that, if true is an alarming situation, having six airplanes full of Americans trying to get out of Afghanistan who can't get out because the Taliban is not letting them We've heard reports that the State Department It's just a phone call away from letting them go, But there's some sort of hang up. Let's hear from Congressman McCaul again. Well, they are not. They are not clearing the air points to depart. They've sat at the airport for the last couple days. These planes and they're not allowed to leave. Uh, we know the reason why is because the Taliban wants something in exchange. This is really Chris turning into a hostage situation. Where they're not going to allow American citizens to leave until I get full recognition from the United States of America. Yeah, that that's a scary idea. The fact that you know the Taliban is in control now. The deadline has passed August 31st has come and gone. And there's still Americans. They're sitting on a plane trying to get out. Now you go to the White House Chief of staff, Ron Clain says. Yeah, we've got Americans there, but not all of them want to come home Who would Yeah, it's not bad. That's perfectly normal here that you know it doesn't matter that you know, government's been targeting Americans for that. You know the history of the Taliban and their good now. What he's saying is some of them have family members there, and they don't want to ditch their family, and it's like, well, I'm not going unless they ago, so I think there's there's a little bit of, um Rhyme and reason to why some Americans wouldn't want to go. But I don't think it's a situation where Americans are like, Yeah, my life is better over here than coming back to the United States. So either way, no matter what you slice it. Those Americans there. They're either on a plane or they're not, and they haven't come home yet. And they need to get back. Because it's only a matter of time before things get worse before the the Taliban starts working foreign interests with other countries in that region who don't share the same interest as us right, and I'm not even sure whether it's strictly the Taliban. That's keeping him on the ground or the State Department or the Biden administration some other way because there are reports on both sides of that, right. It's hard to tell because there's some people that say it's a the state Department and get on the phone right now and authorized the planes to go and they'll go. But then you've got Congressman McCall saying, Well, no, the Taliban is not letting those six planes go because they want something in return. That's why he uses the term hostage situation. It's messy. It is very Messi's doesn't look like it's going to get much better any time soon, either. I hope it does. Yeah, just for the standpoint of the lives needs to be resolved. Right and so far well, the soldiers are out which I mean, that's great. But with the soldiers out and other Americans there, you kind of took away all your leverage, right? Like we got no right. There's zero leverage. You just You're just kind of hoping now that the Taliban Just lets him go and they get back. I think the leverage we have now is to recognize them formally as the legitimate government of Afghanistan and as the legitimate government. Then we start sending humanitarian aid to them, and I don't think there's a whole lot of will in Congress to let that of the political backlash. If that were to happen that would fall on the Biden administration would be hot and heavy, and I don't think that would let up before midterms next year. And you know everyone's thinking about that right now. 8 42 at W B. A P. Steuby is not here today, but we're going to do tell me something good anyway, that's coming up after traffic and weather. Trump Got Written Briefing in February on Possible Russian Bounties, Officials Say
"Is going to the White House today. They will be briefed on reports that Russia offered to pay Taliban linked fighters in Afghanistan to kill U. S troops. The lawmakers want to know who in the White House knew what And when. The New York Times now reports that President Trump got a written briefing about this in late February. There are various reports we should note about when the president was told, but the White House said As thie information never reached him. NPR congressional reporter Claudia Great Solace is on the line. Good morning, Claudia. Good morning knew. Well, what will happen in this meeting today? This will be led by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. The White House says they requested this meeting with Democrats and Democrats in turn, so they have a lot of questions. The group. Joining Hoyer Thiss meeting includes the chairs and members of several congressional committees with jurisdiction over this matter, and they're looking for answers. For example, I talked to representative Ruben Gallego of Arizona. He's a combat veteran, and he's not buying the administration's argument that they didn't share this information sooner because they're still trying to prove it out. And the story continues to evolve. In a new statement, the National Security Advisor Robert O'Brien said intelligence officials continue to investigate and could prepare a response over time. Okay, so Democrats go into the White House today. Interestingly, the White House briefed some Republicans yesterday. What happened in that meeting. So several of these members who attended this meeting afterwards echo the White House's narrative that the Intel community is conflicted on what actually happened and that they didn't necessarily think that Trump needed to be briefed yet, But they also expressed concern If the reports turn out to be true, I spoke to representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois. He's also a combat better and let's take a listen. I think as we get more answers, then we'll know what the response needs to be. But I don't think this is built up to be any kind of internal scandal. But it is definitely a concern by way of. You know what roller is Russia playing in Afghanistan? NPR also spoke with representative Michael McCaul, another member who attended the meeting. He's a top Republican for the House Foreign Affairs Committee. And he said these allegations are very serious. And if true, he thinks the U. S needs to take swift and severe action against Russia. Of these meetings leave most of Congress still to be briefed on the matter, and congressional leaders such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others say these briefings fall woefully short of what's demanded here. NPR congressional reporter Cloudy gray solace. Thank you, Claudia. Thanks for having me.
