"Remember the two thousand thirteen green bay packers came back against the cowboys as we all know the Matt Flynn Game. In thanks to the Chicago bears really collapsing able to. Make it into the playoffs themselves. They lost in the wildcard round. I believe that was. To the forty niners if I'm not mistaken. And in two thousand, fourteen, the Green Bay packers started off wanted to finish twelve in four days. Kadett the rest. Obviously that's also ended in Seattle, ironically? That's three years in a row, two, thousand, twelve, thirteen, and fourteen at the packers started off one two and made the division excuse. Me made the playoffs in all three of them and I think some of that is that division was bad I know that look the NFC East is really bad right now and I know that nothing really compares but think about what the NFC North was like at that point in time. That two thousand twelve was Adrian Peterson's MVP season Christian ponder lead Vikings obviously that was Jay Cutler's bears and the lions are really just kind of figuring things out themselves. There was no real competition for the packers at those times and so I think that that's a similar situation from Mike McCarthy's he's one into and it's not like there's a real a true competitor the NFC. East I mean they're the team's the cowboys primary threat is open to in one and so. That's all I'm saying is if you're looking for optimism, that's where I would. Look. But it is what it is. The final thing that I think we should note is that there is a lot of chatter and a lot of discussion around the Internet and certainly coming from Seattle about Tristan Hill Tristen Hill had a tackle on Chris Carson in Sunday's lost. That was definitely questionable to say the least I know you know what I'm talking about his being accused of making a dirty play. Obviously nobody knows what the intent was separatist in this play does not look great. Honestly, Mike? McCarthy. said, he doesn't believe there was any intent. Caja right who obviously plays for the seahawks came out and called for more than a fine. Obviously, ox players are going to back their guy obviously Mike. McCarthy's going to back his guy again. Truthfully, this does not look great Richardson Hill, but we'll see what else comes over to expect personally to become interest in hills way at the very least. But that about does it for our Tuesday I know it feels like the sky is falling I know it feels terrible I know that I've let cowboys eighteenth in my power rankings but everything's GonNa be okay it's ultimately They're one and two of the divisions bad. Is GonNa be a long year and we'll see what happens on Sunday because the cowboys have lost two games I realized that but teams have lost her really good. If the cowboys come out and beat the target Cleveland Browns, we have a different discussion always come out and you don't play so well, we differ discussion. But. Yeah That about does it for Tuesday's episode here on the show you can hear me again later on today on the seven, five, two time superbowl champion Tony Casillas you can also, you can do me a favor. You can have the absolute best Tuesday of all time. You know because you deserve we see Amana, my friends as always go cowboys and peace out..

Substance abuse linked to COVID-19 susceptibility: Study

"The pandemic, There's been been an an increase increase in in substance substance abuse. abuse. It's It's also also had had significant significant impact impact on on mental mental health health and and is is impacting impacting communities communities across across America. America. ABC ABC News News producer producer Jenny Jenny Goldstein Goldstein has has more more on on some some of the steps being taken and is part of the ABC News turning point. Siri's were focusing on how addiction affects communities of color. He was Jenny. September is National Recovery Month an entire month dedicated to educating Americans about substance use disorders, mental health treatment and services. I am a woman in long term recovery from alcoholic drug addiction. Paddy McCarthy is the CEO of the organization faces and voices of recovery. I have overcome challenges with my own alcohol and turkeys and now then in recovery for over 30 years this year marks the 31st anniversary of National recovery Month. This year's theme joined the voices for recovery celebrating connections. Recovery is a journey. We want a path to a better future. Martine Hackett is an associate professor in the master of public Health and community health programs at Hofstra University. She says, the first step to recovery is acknowledgements. You really cannot attempt to solve that problem or to even begin your recovery until you acknowledge that jacket says racial disparities exist in the process of recovery. This is in part due to the barriers that hinder minorities in particular from getting the help. They need some of these barriers that minorities face when it comes to identifying help. Have to do with the even their perceived need for treatment, Recognising that they might not want to have help from official means and might be more comfortable seeking help from family or from religious institutions. Another obstacle, health insurance coverage or access to behavioral health services. Trauma and racial stress can make minorities more susceptible to miss using drugs or alcohol as a coping mechanism. Some of this has to do with concepts around trauma. And the the experiences of trauma clearly in an early age people who are exposed to stressors there's research that talks about the stressors of racism. And how those stressors can cause behaviors that you know people reach to to be able to deal with those stressors. Hackett says. Native Americans are the most affected by these disparities. They have a higher rate of addiction, but they also have a lower rate of recovery and being able to seek recovery. As for national recovery month McCarthy says Connecting in 2020 will be a little different than previous years. You know that we can't do it alone. So that's why the theme of celebrating connections is so important, especially right now. During Koven 19 when connecting with people has become a whole new challenge when we're not able to visit people in person or tender, usual gatherings to support recovery. McCarthy also says the language and terminology we used when referring to those in recovery is an important step. No longer use words like addict. We no longer use the word drug abuser. We have to remember that these are family friends, sums of daughters we have shifted. Two person first language such as a person with the substances disorder, Hackett says the stigma can make it more difficult for those struggling to seek help. This is especially true for minorities, the idea of stigma that there are certain Ways of different cultures view addiction and that people might not feel comfortable being able to even admit that they have a problem. Faces and voices of recovery has a website where resource is accessible both during Andy on National Recovery Month National recovery Month that order so visit the website you can find out where the events are happening and stay up to date as the month of September comes to an end the fight for recovery and dismantling research All barriers continues. Ending the stigma and making resource is available to all is a step in the right direction.

"Twenty, three, twenty, four, thirteen, thirteen, thirty to twenty, five, twenty, five, twenty, six, seventeen, twenty, four, twenty, five, twenty, four, and forty, six lines just like it did are just like the situation unfolded against the Falcons unfolded the same way against the seahawks with the cowboys started every possession on their own side of the field their own twenty yard line one yard line shot to Tony Pollard 35-yard-line. Twenty five twenty, twenty, five, twenty, five, twenty, five, six, yard line eleven yard line six year online and twenty five. Yard line. Two Games in a row. Two Games, in a row, The Dallas cowboys have gone a professional football team in the National Football League two games in a row. The Dallas cowboys have gone without a starting field position on the plus side of the fifty yard line. We were told that this defense is going to be more aggressive. We were told this defense was going to play with more chance. We're told that these things were going to lead to them getting burned, which we have definitely seen that part of, but it was also going to lead to turnovers and shorter fields. We have seen this offense perform we have we've seen this often think about this of the cowboys last four. Possessions against the SEAHAWKS. Obviously, the last one was the interception whatever. But before that three before that started on the six year line, they went ninety four yards for a touchdown. The eleven year online, they went eighty nine yards for a touchdown and a six line. They didn't quite go ninety four yards, but they ended up with a field goal. The point is they started three consecutive drives either on their eleven yard line or worse and got points on all of them imagine how differently these games would go if the cowboys defense could force turnover or force punts in better situations in that is I think what is the most frustrating thing and it was revealed on Monday during Mike McCarthy's press conference I reviewed it was reported that Earl Thomas Free Agent Earl Thomas is visiting or set to visit and set to work out for the Houston Texans. Again, I'm recording this on Monday afternoon about five thirty PM central standard time. So keep that in mind if something has happened between now and then and I think that's where a lot of people are frustrated people are saying okay. What you're doing is not good enough Steven Jones said if after the fan on Monday that the team at the moment has no plans to bring anybody from the outside as far as bringing in Secondary Mike McCarthy said that he likes. The cowboys have in terms of their secondary options I'm not trying to bag on anybody, but what you have is not good enough the results over well, mainly show this and it's only three games and there's a lot of qualifiers that are necessary here. But right now, your secondary specifically looks really bad and your beat up you've got injuries. That's all fair and that's all true. But in the meantime at least why don't you go do something or else you're going to end up in these holes and you're going to have your quarterback throwing for more yards against that team than anybody ever has and still lose and so that's that's kind of where I'm at. In terms of the cowboys secondary I know a lot of people wanNA. See a lot of moves and I don't blame me for that. I do think it should be said, and obviously this could change with Monday night football. So I'm going to assume that this holds up or I'll just say at the time of this recording Alden Smith is the sack leader in the NFL all intimate has four sex through three games. He had three and a half sacks through his nine games with the Oakland Raiders. So he has more sex in a third of the time with the cowboys and he did with the raiders you think about Darren McFadden Amari Cooper now, obviously Alden Smith the cowboys are really good at taking players that the raiders used didn't get a lot of in getting a lot of them themselves. You think about WanNa McLean even. So that's Kinda. Cool. But Alden Smith. I mentioned this on Monday for both. I think Alex Smith deserves his own sort of comeback player of the year like they should rename the award after Alex Smith. The fact that he's even on an NFL team is amazing. But in terms of onfield production I, don't know anybody that speeding all Smith for comeback player of the year at this point. So but again, we're only three weeks, and so it is what it is I do want to add one last thing I know that I I said I was done on the couch secondary pro football focused. At the cowboys have allowed a one twenty, six point six passer rating in coverage through week three, which is the worst in the NFL. Guy Do. Something you've got to do something. You simply have to do something. Other thing I'd maybe an optimistic. No I went back and looked. Mike McCarthy's records. His records through three weeks during times. The Green Bay packers head coach. Obviously, this is his first year with the Dallas Cowboys. He's never been a head coach anywhere else. Now Mike McCarthy started off one in two four other times as my dog here wants to be part of the show he wants to be paid. You know how it is but so I'm petting my dog bear with one hand and trying to podcast with the other but Mike McCarthy starting off one into in four other instances with the Green Bay packers the first time in two thousand six. That was still with Brett Farve is the team's quarterback the Green Bay. Packers when eight ironically and missed the playoffs in two thousand, twelve the green. Bay, packers went into in their first three games. They ended up eleven five loss in the divisional round. I believe that was to the San Francisco Forty niners in two thousand and thirteen the Green Bay packers or one into through three games ultimately went eight, seven one. You'll.

"Subscribe Button Lee Rating Review Be honest and you review we certainly appreciate your honesty. Those things really help out and so yeah. But we have a lot of things to get to obviously the cowboys lost to the Seattle seahawks. Last Sunday in the dust is still settling. Their things haven't quite totally turned to the Cleveland browns yet they will formerly and properly tomorrow when the. Cowboys get back to work. Today is, of course their off day. Now, I want to start off with a note from Greg Abell who does a fantastic job of covering the Seattle seahawks for the News Tribune Greg noted that Dak Prescott who threw for four hundred seventy passing on Sunday against Seattle that his four hundred, seventy, two passing our performance was the best one. From a yard standpoint that any quarterback has ever had against the Seattle seahawks. That's right on Sunday afternoon Dak Prescott threw for more yards against the Seattle seahawks than anybody ever has in the history of the world and the Dallas Cowboys found a way to squander this performance a point that we are all really obviously upset by now this was a big talking point of. Big Discussion all day long on Monday Dax should have help the defense should help him out special teams, etc. I have been somebody who has been critical of the cowboys defense and special teams units. They obviously are the group that is letting down the team at least three weeks into the season. Now, they have a one into record, but obviously, we another couch could. Easily be Oh and three. I wrote something in length. If you want to check it out at bloggers that calm I talked about this briefly in our post game show here on the Ocho but obviously, we've had some time to really look at the data that came out of Sunday's loss to the seahawks. Now Mike McCarthy said on Monday that he is fine with Tony. Paula remaining the teams kickoff returner. I respectfully disagree with that assertion by Mike McCarthy unless the cowboys are planning on taking these every kickoff. Now, Tony Pollard has returned seven kickoffs for the cowboys so far this season and they have generally not been very good. Now, the first one we'll start again in Los Angeles going in order here chronologically the first kick off the. Tony Pollard fielded for the cowboys landed at the at the teams six yard line. Now, obviously, if the ball lands outside the zone, what can Tony Polar do he has to return it and he did return to the twenty seven yard line a gain of twenty one yards and it is passed the twenty five yard line starting point, which is of course where you get. The ball. If you take any or take a touchback, the second return Tony Pollard had on the season again, landed outside the end zone at the five yard line. He took it all the way that a thirty two yard line. I've obviously got issues with this that third one landed at the goal line. He has to bring that went out and brought it back. To the thirteen yard line. Yuck. That was against the Atlanta. Falcons. Now, this is where the problem began for Tony It was during that Falcons game the next three kickoffs land inside of the end zone Tony Pollard decides to bring them all out. These were all against the Atlanta. Falcons, this is his fourth kick off of the year, the ball lands at the cowboys negative. Five yard line well within the end zone and he brings it out to the teams seventeen yard line that is technically a gain of twenty two yards or a return of twenty two yards from the point that Toni Ballard field that it. However, it is eight yards behind the point where the cowboys would have started. If he had just taken a touchback, you cannot. Make those mental errors. Then next one, the ball lands, the cow was negative two yard line again inside the end zone and Tony Pollard to his credit returns total of twenty eight yards to the cowboys twenty, six yard line giving them plus field position to start their drive. Again, tip of the hat that is well done. This is one of the more agreements to me. The ball lands at the cow negative seven yard line. This is the deepest landing kickoff. Tony Pollard has fielded this year negative seven yards you got no business returning. To. Be Air to credit don't pohlad returns that to the cowboys twenty four yard line, which a literal sense is a thirty one yard return. However, you are still behind the point that you would have been if you just had taken a touchback and it's these little decisions, these are things that I've been harping on and maybe you feel their ministry but those are the things that add up something like that can come home. To roost and it happened on the road in. Seattle as we saw, Tony Pollard, by the way his first and only kick off that he fielded against the seahawks landed at negative two yard line. So again, inside the end zone, as you know Tony Parker decided to feel that kickoff he stumbled he muffed whatever you WANNA, call it, and the ball is at the cowboys nearline turns into a safety, etc, etc etc now. Tony Paulo did not return anymore kicks for the cowboys and by that I mean, he did not bring any out the rest of the kicks that the seahawks had the rest of the kick offs were all touch bax? I just I don't see a point in this. I truly don't, and I'm not trying to harp on it or pick on anybody I. don't see a point I I'm a fan of efficiency and I. think that you are you are wrecking a level of efficiency by trying to pull something off. That is difficult. The NFL moved the starting point from touchback to the twenty five yard line for a reason, and it was to mitigate the number of returns that would happen you are not going to. Beat that no matter how you how much want you're just not it is simply not going to happen. So that is the first point of contention that I have a place or special teams are failing the cowboys. Obviously Greg's online missed a field goal in the first game of the year a game that the cowboys lost by three points had the to missed extra points. Obviously one of them was blocked against Seattle I mean there's a lot to there, but the other thing that needs to be said. The cowboys are getting no help from their defense and by that I don't just mean they're allowing other offenses to score. Well, obviously, it's been talked about David allowed seventy seven points at the last two weeks. That is very, not good I'm going to tell you these starting field position for every cowboys drive in two thousand and twenty three games worth there are thirty six true possessions here because one of them was just right before the end of the half. Against the Seattle seahawks I believe if I was against the Seattle seahawks but this is the starting point for every cowboys drive and I wrote about this. If you want to see it for yourself, just head over to blog on the web dot com or.

Outrage after Trump refuses to commit to peaceful transfer of power

"President Donald Trump has long stirred controversy over the upcoming election, for example, predicting it will be fraudulent and suggesting it be delayed. The controversy rose to a new height Wednesday after Trump said about a peaceful transfer of power. Get rid of the ballots and you'll have a very peaceful there won't be a transfer. Frankly, there will be a continuation. Democrats responded with outrage. I mean, he says, that people swallow Clorox and we hear about it for the rest of our lives, but he's trying to have the Constitution of the United States. Swallow. Clorox. Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi answer the reporter's question on the subject at her Capitol Hill news conference Thursday, but that a president of the United States would place in doubt. The idea of the peaceful transfer of power is well. It's no surprise again because the president has been contemptible of science and governance. And so you see, 200,000 people have died, but I am I had confidence in the American people. And I have confidence that that He won't get away with saying, for example, I want with the popular vote on the ground. The vote in the mail doesn't count in the rest of that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden was at a loss for words Wednesday night as he spoke to reporters to a face mask. I'm being facetious that said. What country are we way? Says the most irrational things I don't know what to say. But it's not surprising. Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, himself a former Democratic presidential candidate. Devoted a whole news conference toothy issue in Washington, D C. We must ensure in this unprecedented moment in American history. That this is an election that is free and fair. An election in which voters are not intimidated. An election in which all votes are counted and that election In which the loser accept the results. This is not just an election. Between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. This is an election between Donald Trump and Democracy. And democracy must win. Republicans have also spoken out, though in a much gentler tone, Republican senator met Romney of Utah tweeted fundamental to democracy is the peaceful transition of power. Without that there is Belarus. Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell has said there will be an orderly transition, just as there has been every four years since 17 92. Those Republicans did not comment on how they see a peaceful transition coming about. Other Republicans have also responded to Trump's statement, no questions. No qualms. No concerns is going to be peaceful. This nation is designed that way This nation will have it that way, And that's exactly what will take place. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy downplayed the issue and his weekly news proofing, saying he wants to put it all to rest.

"And it's the defense has been like you know in the second half is falling apart in giving up all the points. That's where I'm disappointed because I at least I would think he's GonNa. Say Man Forget all that, right I'm taking the same back over I'm GONNA. Be Coordinator of I'M GONNA get fired. I'm going to get fired or my watch no doubt I agree with you. I'll guess his hall of fame DB. Woodson here on the couple of Fox sports radio, and of course. Nick foles who came out of the bullpen for the bears replaced on Mitch Trubisky, and this is where Nick foles. Excels Rob. The keys to cars the starter he always seems to crash would he comes off the bench and doesn't seem to be the same kind of pressure on him he excels the does this make any sense? No but if You look at you know. I put Nick foles and I put the beard of wonder. In the same category, right put Patrick for Yup. They're very similar where once they get the keys to the rain, they'll have some really good games and then mental health and games like what were you guys doing you know but you know going back to trubisky you know Nagy just I don't understand how he thought that he saw. This quarterback was better than nick going into this whole thing. Now he's obviously he's more athletic. But he's not a better leader. You can't tell me a better leader and and you can't go back to him now. Right Booze. You don't WanNA lose the team you'RE GONNA lose Chicago. He's going to be against you. So you know I just think that it's going to be. This is an Knicks team here on out man, you know hopefully. They can keep playing well with him being the home they got a solid be fair. And get some wins. What do you make of the cowboys won and to start the only win of course was the gift from Atlanta they could easily be oh and three. They can't seem to be too good team the upper echelon teams. Is something broken with that defense. What's going on? Mike McCarthy Starting Dallas not been pretty. No but you know you know who the best player they have right now who's that all them, Smith? Yes at. Five Years Right. He played in five years and I'm telling you man this guy. And I'm watching plan I'm going this the. This is their best player on their football team, not Jalen Smith who my homeboy from Fort Wayne Indiana like I am. All. He is he's causing havoc, and once he gets his legs underneath thing I. Think he's GonNa play so much better but you gotta understand this is a new system for this whole team. So they're learning all new stuff, all new lingo, all a whole new defense. Everybody's trying to figure this thing out. In in Dallas and I I always say the first time around when tease when coaches are changed and they have a new system offense defense special teams. At. Times team struggle and they struggled early because they're turning out especially member no offseason. A small training camp no preseason so they're trying to figure. Out on the run at one hundred miles an hour. No doubt what the everybody was ready to Crown Kyle Murray and the Arizona cardinals they will off to or to start the lions come to town loses of eleven in a row piece of cake right? All they have to do is carve up the line secondary and they got another win off to a three and start, and then column Murray Throws tweet picks and the Lions win the game. That's not a weekly through not only do you Throw Ping three six? But when he had. Thirty nine hundred rushing. Yup..

Cowboys employed the “Watermelon kick” to pull off comeback

"Cowboys last night, pick it up lay dowse needed to recover that onside kick and they did this is a team that was trailing by twenty in the first quarter. Somehow some way climbs back in and got the own onside kick and marched down the field and kicked a forty six yarder to win this game somehow cowboys pulling off the improbable here is the winning quarterback Prescott after the win. Yeah, this is huge because McCarthy said at halftime. We need to be here. We need to be right where we are and he said the final score didn't matter as much as a finding out the type of men that we have the type of fight that we have within this team but as I said to show the resiliency to go out there and continue to fight. Continued, continue add it and just be able to come out with the win. It does so much obviously way better than star knowing too. But going one one and I'm having a lot of confidence after after we put ourselves in such a big hole in the first quarter. Just, just stay at and everybody believes each other that was huge and so in. So many ways.

NFL reminds teams to follow sideline rules on face coverings

"The National Football League is threatening to find head coaches if they don't adhere to Corona virus rules requiring face masks on the sidelines. During the first weekend of games. Some coaches were saying not wearing coverings. We have the latest from NPR's Tom Goldman. In a Monday memo to the NFL's 32 teams. We'd executive Troy Vincent praised what he called the tireless efforts to make the season possible during the pandemic. But Vincent also warned those who defy rules unmasks everyone in team bench areas on the field except players has to wear a face covering in all times. Failure to do so, Vincent wrote, will result in accountability measures against individuals and or clubs. Those measures include finds during Sunday's nationally televised game between Dallas and the Los Angeles Rams. Ella head coach Sean McVeigh, often at his mask under his chin, while Dallas is Mike McCarthy wore his thie entire game. Tung Goldman NPR news

Does Dallas have legit beef on offensive pass interference call?

"Let's talk some aforementioned cowboys in La taken on the rams. Here we go. Brandon boys down three DAK finds Michael Gallup down the sideline third and ten get him into field goal range but but hang on wait one second. A flag is thrown on the play for offense, a pass interference Gallup flag for contact with Jalen Ramsey and. The cowboys rams win it twenty to seventeen spoiling Mike. McCarthy's debut spoiling DAX season opener spoiling will you get how spoiling works? Here's the head coach on that costly pass interference call. Re I really didn't see a replay of it just watching it live. It looked like two guys hand fighting I thought it was well executed. I was I was surprised a call there. either. Way So. Very obviously disappointed in the in the call particularly at that point in the game I I thought they live both teams play tonight and you know you just don't usually see that particularly. Critical point a game. So I have not seen a it. That's about as much as I can comment on. It was clear as day they wouldn't have called then I would have been. Highly upset So it was clear as day opinion. Also. But that's what I. That's what I saw in filled out there. All right. Then the lots of get to in this one, let's start with that offensive. Pi Brandon. You've been moaning and groaning through these highlights. Did you think it was a call or not what you make of it? I'll say this by the letter of the law, this was the right call but this is the call that frustrates wide receivers and quarterbacks around the glow. Alright because when you look at it, who's the first to really engage in hand combat down the sideline jail? It's usually the generally be. Of course Yup. So what are you re Mr referee what do you want me to do? Jalen has my arm. How do I get my arm away? We're taught not to be violent with the shove and not to be violent what the separation. This Gallup did exactly what he was supposed to do. Now I will say this nick let me ask you this question was the game play. The game was played with an essay, right? L. A., Hollywood. Do. You know fun fact Jalen Jalen Ramsey his his hand coach Berry. Nez. Did a phenomenal job with them. The best thing about this was Jalen Ramsey acting job he added like. Shove to the sideline. Yeah. That was the best part about it. That's why he got this call. It reminds me of the basketball players flopping. This was a bad call, but we really look at the law if we want to see this call change moving forward.

A look at Gladys Bentley, American blues singer

"Before we get started as we normally do at the start of a person's life I'm going to jump in when gladys was forty five years old in the year nineteen, fifty, two revolutionnaire. Arcada. Their time travel is upset. Yes. Heavens the reason why jumping in he is because nine fifty two is the at that one amount main sources was written and I want to talk about that. Source. Pot, Abou- review before we actually. Talk about that. So in the nineteen forties and nineteen fifties in the USA politicians like Senator Joe McCarthy was spearheading moral and political panicked about queer people in the understanding that we who are not only immoral but also susceptible to blackmail and therefore more likely to become communist spies. Goddess Bentley had built her career on being an openly queer and gender non conforming blues performer in nineteen, Fifty, two in. The African American magazine Ebony, she write an article titled. I'm a woman again in which she talks very late at queasiness before renouncing it and championing heterosexuality and Hetero normativity. In this article, she says, I became a woman again when I discovered unaccepted the one glorious thing which for so many years I had bitterly fought with all my heart mind and body the law of antennas, the devotion of a man. I thought it was kind of Jesus. Is, the man Jesus, the matters not Jesus She did definitely become more involved with her church later in her life, but she doesn't necessarily link that to her. Queens. So like Jesus here but only incidentally. Background character. Incidental Jesus is my Christian rock band. Do you come across. Do. Christian covers rock songs. Both I anyway. What happened YOU CLAP We'll talk a lot more about the background to this article and what was happening in life at that time. When we get to that I, think the sort of political background McCarthyism is. Hardly the main you need to know that, and the reason that I wanted to bring this up and mentioned at the start is because this article is the only information we have about Gladys inhering voice. Well, that's quite a pickle. It is quite a pickle that we are. And it's also the only source of information we have about her childhood before she was about twenty one. Okay. So that's that most by graphical information comes from what can be gleaned from newspaper is nobody's ever written a biography. All Gladys on the work of like interviewing people who knew anything like that is that is something that could still be done. Do you think she was born in nineteen ninety seven so like a lot of people anyone who knew her in her early life is GonNa be dead. Yeah. But from headlight alive that would probably still be some still alive could talk about her bought definitely have to be done pretty soon. I'm not aware of anyone working on unfortunately, but hopefully, someone is yeah. So I just wanted to raise that heavy keep in mind that that's the source of wealth with before we start talking about glass at life. So I got us was born in Philadelphia on the twelfth of August nine, hundred seven to George and Mary Bentley. She was the oldest of four siblings in a black working class family according to Gladys's article in Ebony Mary had wanted a son and she was very disappointed when she had a door refusing much as tasha child on Nessa Child. Gladys. Intern says she always felt repulsed by men including her father brothers and uncles and she says. I suppose the reason was that they will admire while I was scorned from ninety nine or ten. She began to steal her brothers choirs at first to feel she was getting even with them but then I began feel more comfortable in boys quarries than dresses have parents teachers objected to gladys as masculine dress. The gladys was obstinate and she and her parents eventually reached a compromise by gladys wear what's called a meaty blouse. So that's what you'd pictures like kind attritional Salas like a navy ship and she went out with a skirt during elementary school gladdest about to crush on a female teachers she tells us in Class I sat the hours watching her and. Wondering, why I was so attracted to at night I dreamed I didn't understand the meaning of those dreams until later. I. WanNA mention this because it's got his first experience of being attracted to a woman that we know about and also just think it gives you a bit of an idea of how in her article the Ebony she does talk openly about like being que- and being attracted to women and wanting to present in a masculine way and these kinds of things like she doesn't deny that this is an aspect then renounces it and decides that Hetero. normativity is better suicide angle on this that she used to feel this way but she has stopped. Or the she feels this way but has decided that that's not any good. I tell you. It's more than she used to feel this way but has stopped. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. It's hard to say because she does sort of talk about talk about there are other people who have the same who had the same experiences in she refers to those groups like she uses like way if she's talking about painting society and she's still kind of identifies with those groups. But at the same time, she says as things like I've become a woman again now I love man I'm able to Vin into this female role Besse so I'm interested to hear how gender and sexuality. Interacting glasses life. Easier we go through what I was saying I've become a woman again. that. Yeah. I really interested to hear your thoughts on that. I, don't really nine because we have so little in gladys invoice except this. Has a lot of a lot about the stuff going on and influence why she write this article. It's hard to say how gladys feels about gender, but we will talk about Nemo. As. Gladys grew older cy when she was a teenager, her mother thought taking doctors. She doesn't explicitly tell us in Ebony article the reason for this but it's apparent that it was connected to fairly to perform femininity in the way that was expected of him. Gladys tells us she believes parents meant well botched quite what my family did not know was that. I didn't need a doctor, but love's affection and healthy interests to supplant the malignant growth festering inside of me, and she seems to argue at this point in the article that it was the original rejection by her mother that fest push towards her gender non conforming behavior and that her parents subsequent relations attempting to force her to conform to femininity. "I'm so delighted to be. Speaking with you. I can't tell you how much I love your book and I'm telling everyone about it. Yeah. It's as marked up. Emmy Book I have ever read. In the Bible including the Bible and I picked it up just on a table in a bookstore in Saint Paul Minnesota Twin cities. Different questions for me before we get going I think. Okay. I'm happy to respond to you. Yeah I don't I. So I don't usually do Generally do book interviews but really, and I've dug little bit and I've also looked at your. Some. Of Your other writing but I really. So so we're we're not talking about the book, but essentially we're talking about. Everything, the book is about. So I yeah so Chris I think we're good great. Okay. Yes and so we have a nice amount of time to have a big. Real wandering conversation. I would like to start I I I. Start Most of my interviews with a question just just wondering about The religious or spiritual background of someone's childhood I find. That is a very fertile place and everybody's imagination whatever their story is. It's full of questions and searching and softness so. However you would. However, you would begin to to think of that. How would you? How would you Described the religious or spiritual background of your childhood. I would use a curious phrase to describe. What I am now I would describe myself as an ethnic Catholic. Okay. that was a phrase I can't claim authorship of it was used by. British woman politician about twenty years ago meaning there's I grew up a Roman Catholic. and I have abandoned the faith. The formerly at any right but the belief system if not not necessarily. Belief in heaven now but the. The sense of right and wrong I think Stays with you all your life and you relate to it. Was it Mary? McCarthy who read a book called wants to Catholic. And I think the sense of right and wrong and also I think he'll go strong sets. Of Original Sin Yeah I. Think I'm quite aware that is a very dark side to the species mom. If, we can say that these days I think the the species is still called mind it's a human being. and so even though I'm not formally religious. I, like to think I. Suppose that I carry with me what people might describe as a religious sensibility. And I feel like right at the beginning of of your book The Moss snowstorm nature enjoy. You I mean this is this is a this is a book about our bond with the natural world. Right and you and you start it. It's also woven, and that bond is both civilizational. It's at once civilizational and species something about our species, but it's also personal. and so and you do we've that personal story all the way through your reflection on this large subject. End You know you're use the word a soul in this way rather early you describe your mother's illness and She she was away for a time institutionalized and. One of the things that happened to you as a child is it you you had a lack of feeling about that. that you could perceive, but then you describe this day. And here's just the sentences. That there was a singular window. Of observing butterflies and he said when I was a skinny kid in short pants, butterflies entered my soul. So where'd you just tell a little bit of that story as and why that is a vantage point for you on again, this large civilizational issue. It was really just a personal way. Of, my own way through my own personal experience. Of. Beginning explore. the strange conundrum which it seems to me that we can actually love very fiercely the natural world I we sort of take that for granted as commonplace. But as I got older, it seemed to me rather curious phenomenon because after all the natural world is only the the environment from which we emerge to species like every other species. Unlike. Every other species there are two things that they're not sure world has for us. One is danger. One is utility because the natural world can be dangerous and it can kill you. You can have thousands of people killed by snakes in India every year still or not show world can be a great advantage. It can provide you food and shelter and various other things. And all species are aware even if instinctively of these things but we have a third thing, which is that we can actually love the natural world.

"That's a comedy they're like. Oh I give it like a thirty Mike. Well the thing I particularly bristle about and Danny McBride and I had a nice bitch session about. It is the total failure to recognize how hard it is to make. Comedy work versus. I can push in a camera and I can play Peter. Gabriel and guess what you're gonNA feel an emotion. There's no cheating and comedy them to not even acknowledge that as frustrating like you go. Oh wasn't my brand of comedy but I could see that it's well made and I could see everyone's laughing around like the unwillingness to even recognize the architecture of it in respect it is I find offensive. Now you don't have to like something. But as a reviewer you should be knowledgeable enough to recognize the mechanics of it. Yes it is sometimes just like you can't be a food critic if you're like. I only like peanut butter and white bread. Everything else is terrible you. My friend should get a different job. Like if you're if you're saying I can look at everything with an open opinion and it doesn't have to be my thing but this was very good or this was done. Well I think people will like it but I also think a little bit of it is like instagram. Like you school. Scroll through instagram. You see the guy. Light a firework in his ass. And You KINDA CHUCK ALL RIGHT. You get a little chuckle. You can scratch your comedy. You can't really scratch your drama. It's you're not gonNa really see something in a thirty second video that fulfills you in that desire for drama part of it is. I feel like we're competing with this immediate thing but the thing that scares me as the thing you just mentioned which is that aside. The shared experience of being at wedding crashers opening night was so profound compared to evaluate watched it on my phone and that's a hard thing to convince younger. People don't have those fun memories of going to see the Bill Murray movie when it came out in that shared. Oh we all were with that audience or just roll and that laughter. What happened you? Do you leave the bit more of like humanity? Not just a laugh. But you're like I got in a room with a bunch of strangers which God knows when that will happen again and we have this shared experience e you feel it is someone to be like. Didn't affect me at all and it transient. You could be sitting next to a guy from Texas with a cowboy hat on. You could be sitting next to a rabbi to your left when Owen Wilson says we only use ten percent of our heart to see all of us. Laugh you're like Oh there's some unifying beauty to this thing. Yeah it says it brings people together. That would never normal late. You're right in the same room. Have the same opinion on something. Yeah there's a power to it. Yeah I just feel like it's verbally. It's fallen out of fashion but when people like the comments I get I get more people just being like. Please keep making the movies you make because we need it. I need to go home at the end of the day and laugh. And that's not everything you're doing is great. I just mean like that's the comment. I get all the time. It's like. Just keep it up because we need something. Yeah but then I. I don't feel like that sentiment gets through. May Be to the people kind of choosing and and commenting on the brass. Yeah Okay Well. Listen America. I was on the outside and I saw the beginning. I'm not Ben but I'm the next best thing you're going to hear from. Is that this Gal. I was around for most of the ride and I saw at the pinnacle on the boss. I'd even say you're kinder than you were when we are at the groundlings visions. And you weren't telling me about the volume versus ticket price. I'm just so happy that it all went the way it went that America got to see the thing I had been seen for free for years. It's just one of my happiest examples that I've been around in the fact that you stayed so beautiful and nice and kind generous. And you stayed in your pod. Your realist fuck. That's my conclusion. Real your real real real McCarthy. Well you're a sweeter peaches you ever were. I hope a little better even better that way. You're even better than you always were. Which is is saying something. Well I adore you and I look forward to seeing being over in us to go for a swim in your pool. Dead All right John. You Okay Bye love.

The best person more good than me. Oh my God by a landslide. Yes and I knew a lot. I like you a lot but sometimes I think she's so good that it might in the end we're gonNA find out she's Super Shady because it just seems toogood. I couldn't agree more. That has secrets full. Because you know I'm never shocked when it's the guy like bill cosby. Where of course the guy was going around telling people they can't swear doing stand up and shaming for doing nudity. Yes that makes sense and this weather's I never trust sweaters. That can't be trusted but kristen. Stocks the house with very responsible cleaning ingredient. I know I actually I was like if I say pine saw I feel like going to texts me and be like there's all these I I use vinegar chew but today I just hit it hard and like you know what I want. Everybody all day to be like she really cleaned that bathroom exact so I wanted a little proof. Yes I couldn't agree more. This silly thing that happened where I had cut myself like in the afternoon and then I had used toilet paper to get rid all the blood and then I I purposely put the toilet paper like on top of the trash cans. So that when she got home she'd be like. Oh my goodness what happened to you but then someone threw something else out in there. And then I found myself rearranging the paper so the blood would be untouchable. I could get attention. That's so great. And then she's walking limping or like holding your wrists like Oh this is fine. Of course I tried to play it off like yeah like. I can't believe she found that I was trying to hide and then they came clean taller. That's why you're that's why. You're lovable weirdness. Plus the honesty is like a wonderful Combo. Yes scumbag and then apologetic about it like Ben his kristen. And I'm you and we're all doing fine. But benza much much better human a better person than I will ever be and most people that know us as you do are like yeah. That's that's pretty accurate and I'm glad you brought it up because I think that and I was like you know I don't know if I bring that up you know it'll be met with open arms but yeah I would say that's a really good each other. Where each other. Why in. What way is he better than you? I'd like him to prove it. He super patient and I'm always like hot anything like that so people. Let's figure out a way to help them. But I've gotta take seven laps around the house going. What's GonNa who which somebody has to do something? And meanwhile by the time I'm done ranting he's like so I called this. It can really help so I did that. And then might all I've been doing is outside swearing and like he just because it does it better and I'm like oh great. He goes great intentions. A process is not always wonderful efficient. Okay but okay our our defense. So I know Ben's Dad he's the sweetest calmest most patient man. My mom is a tornado of productivity and excitement. You know so I feel like I inherited it honestly are your parents is cool. And Calm is Ben's Dad. They're both really sweet funny. But my mom's much more quiet and just kind of like. Hey you WanNa go count pennies today. Oh Yeah Oh yeah let okay. I like pennies. Anything you say. She's just like Oh yeah. We're GONNA clean the bathroom. She was just here she left yesterday. My Mom and dad's stay with us for the winters and I left to go do a job in my dad went home to fish in the Illinois and my mom stayed an extra week to see me when I got home from job. And she got stuck here because she won't fly so she's been with me the last fifty days and we literally just put her on an RV yesterday to go back. And I'm like like you know thirty five hours and she's thinking I'll do my puzzles. Oh.

"He wasn't able to practice. It's really starting in training camp. And then there was a few weeks there where he didn't practice still Friday and even on Friday was just managing doing things so in fairness to him. I don't think he was at his highest and best and as a coach. You wrestle wrestle with is he toughing it out and playing when some guys wouldn't or could he just shrug this off off like it's nothing you don't really know I was once told. It's very easy to be tough with another man's body. And you Never WanNa make those determinations I player because that's how you lose guy he's genuinely fighting through things and can't give any more than he is. What right do you have to call? Call him out on that so I know I'm not really answering it but the answer is I don't have a concrete answer. I think it's a combination of a lot of different things things. And then when you're not at your best physically. Does your confidence wane a little bit. Are you that dog that you were against green being bay when you're feeling good so that's my answer. Yeah Yeah and and just to clarify when you say. He wasn't in shape. You're not saying. Are you saying that when he came to training camp he wasn't really in shape or you just saying he wasn't like peak physically clearly. Oh No let me clarify because things always taken out of context. That's all I'm asking. Yeah no he came into training any camping. Great shape okay. I'm saying when we got. What do we get a week and a half in? And he got hurt. Yes he'll so he's really out for for three and a half four weeks and if you can't run for three and a half four weeks you're always playing catch up in your fitness so instead of being able to go ten plays hard. Maybe it's down to four plays hard and then you get these nagging things as the season goes so to clarify clarify so things don't get mis-read. He came into can't be in great shape nature of all his injuries lesson. That and he battled at all season. Yeah exactly Then it'll be interesting. They'll have decisions to make moving forward. You were a big part of the third down for people that don't know that Sanjay Lau cowboys wide receivers coach joining us. He'll move on to his next Gig as the cowboys. Oh boys have regime change. You did the third down offense and You know the passing game all that and you had a huge role in that in in can you put up some really good numbers on third down. Let me ask you this though you got a brand new play. Caller he'd never done it before you've been around a you had some people you're Garrett has been a play caller in the NFL before but you were breaking in a young guy. How is that like the the operation to that? I'm not even talking about during the week when you get in a game and you got a brand new play caller. What is that? What is that like did it? Did it work fine mine was that was it difficult. What was that? What was that experience like? That's a good question because when we went into the first game game I was like I wonder how this is going to go because I've been with a lot. I've been with eleven coordinators thirteen years and some very big names very established guys and some of them had great feel for calling games and some of them strengths were more on the designing plays and the play calling was not as refined or as fluid as some. Alright yeah we. We've we've hit this thing from a lot of different areas just final thoughts as You look at some of your notes. You Big McCarthy interviewed today that we've already heard talked to Steven. We got a new regime. Interesting stuff in the more in the works. Amari Cooper Free Agent Dak Prescott Free Agent Byron Jones Free Agent Win Robber quit guy who was as you know he. He obviously led them in sack late and vander h uncertain. Jason witten uncertain. Sean Lee uncertain lot of uncertainty. And you know it's interesting interesting and you kind of hinted at this when we were talking before we started the show. And that is that the higher the coaching change here with Mike McCarthy that creates new leverage for Dak Prescott Dak Prescott has more leverage now because he needs to be out here leading transition to a new offense however whatever form that takes because Mike said as I mentioned in the interview that he wants to build on what they had. So That's reassuring. I'm sure short to the players and Jerry and the coaches but he needs Dak Prescott here from day one more than ever more than if they brought Garrett back. They need their quarterback quarterback to be a part of their entire off-season and their off season starts earlier now that they made a coaching change. Otherwise would so the front office needs to get this deal done with that Prescott. I think April six is the number I saw mentioned today as when they can start two weeks earlier than most teams because they have a new regime and that is interesting and then Stephen saying on one of his various radio shows today on the flagship station of the cowboys choice. Something along the lines of before the season we got really really really close to getting a deal. Done he recognize is. We need a quarterback. We have to get this done. So so the thing is is so they need to get Dak Prescott done for the reasons we just mentioned. But DAX incentive is lacking his leverages. I want to wait and see what happens with the Shawn Watson and Patrick Mahomes who can get new contracts for the first time as NFL players and they were already top ten first round picks. No I guess Sean was a little bit later. Patrick Mahomes was ten Shawn Watson was thirteen I think is right so Dak Prescott holds all the cards now in this deal yet. He had his best season ever ever. He almost broke the franchise passing record Capability York. Whoever thought the Dak Prescott was going to break passing record set by Tony Romo honestly? And I've Ben is big data guy. I never thought he would challenge. Those sorts of records is a pocket passer as a thrower in the NFL credit to him and his coaching and coaches. But he's got all the leverage now. He had his best season ever. They made a coaching change. They need him to be involved and they probably should sign him before. MAHOMES and Watson sign their new contracts. We've never seen a quarterback with this much leverage coming off an eight eight season then rick all right. Here's my final. I think we're to the final stage. Yes here's my final. Wrap up on this higher including Mike McCarthy there have been thirty two different head coaches to win a super bowl. Thirteen of those coaches went on to take a different job with a different team. Only bill parcells and Mike Holmgren went to the super bowl again with their second teams none. The thirty two coaches has ever won a super bowl with the second team. That's the challenge for Mike McCarthy. That sounds like something you would have liked brought up to Mike but I did ask him. You heard the interview I asked him about. What makes Tim? Thank you can be the first one to do with this. Yeah true the first time to breakthrough Ed my final thought. Is that great work by you. I think that McCarthy is a safe choice is an exciting choice. That's a hard one because Berry one of the greatest college coach of all he didn't do in the NFL. Mike McCarthy's done it in the NFL with you. The story would continue after a pause. He said bells bills. I hadn't heard bells for the last thirty years. What's that got to do? Yeah and then you get the last part of very strange laugh. The bottom line is I heard belts. Uh.

"Well but but now it is now they have a new general manager and a new head coach. They promoted from within to replace Ted Thompson and they were very active in Free Agency in fact. You could argue that. Nobody did a better job in free agencies in the packers especially getting Darius Sniff and Preston Smith for their defensive front and you know creating real pressure that they didn't have I mean we all saw what happened to Dallas when they lost by ten To the packers this year and it's it's worth noting that Matt Leflore you know first year head coach. He's the only first year head coach among the eight in the league this year. who had a winning record? One is division in and went to the playoffs and part of that success was he inherited Aaron Rodgers. Nobody else did that And he had the good fortune of a general manager who was aggressive receving free agency and who made very wise investments and has created a defense. That's far more competitive than it was in previous years. I guarantee you Mike McCarthy was sitting up there in Green Bay is that we're gonNA thirteen and three but out of ordering. Well how come this expenditure was never. I never had the luxury of this opportunity. You know how how come I always had one of the youngest rosters in football because we lost guys. We couldn't sign anybody you know when Ted Thompson wanted to play all his draft picks early on And and so they were often in a position where they would get off. The slow starts because they're playing young guys who really weren't ready to be part of a winning equation on a consistent basis and they put a lot of pressure on the head coach. Put even more pressure on the quarterback. Yeah I did and we will remember Aaron Rodgers about four years ago. Four or five years ago famously. Said after one of those slow starts relax he in any in any you know looked at that quote and said Okay Eh in any kind of get it together. And they rallied that season but We give so much credit it is Kinda funny hell with a breeze. We give breeze please we. We sort of think they're almost equals. Pack keep coming back to that end was like Peyton and breeze. They can't do it without each other. But with Roger sometimes he gets credit for doing and get on his own and McCarthy was there with him that whole time and so they. You're right they had a lot of productive years. It anything on the offensive side of the ball we were. We're wondering okay. Kellen Moore John King all of that West Coast when we when we kind of look at that and how that's going to be implemented in a team or the DNA for a years was to the old camp easy tree. The longer routes we know Lenihan came from that school of thought. Obviously Kellyn came up. Kellen Moore came up under lend and a hand. How different should we expect this offense to look and we'll it I mean? Is it fair to try to think about okay. Exactly how Green Bay boy. Good point by by the way on the running game because for years they just SORTA got by with really not much at running back Eddie. Lacy almost eight himself himself out of the League may have ended up doing that and they got some production out of him for a time. But you're right. They for year one of the reasons they were so much pressure on their in Rogers. Because does he did not have a running game year after year after year. And and and I don't know if it's that They didn't feel like they could win that way or more likely to me You know I think Mike Got Captivated and it had enough Control of the offense that it became. Hey let's just let Aaron Rodgers you know being Rogers in. Let's have some playground football here and I know you know it was interesting because we're talking about the floor This year before the cowboys played the packers and that was one of the things he mentioned. Was You know I. I'm a guy who likes to run the football. And he did that Tennessee with Derrick Henry obviously and he wanted to bring that to Green Bay and he has a Jones but as they were making the transition he said you know you really have to make a point of it because it's so easy to just say. Wow Air Rogers getting we can just throw it every play like. Why would we want to do that? The guy is so you know incredible with the football in his hands whether he's in the pocket out of the pocket under the center and the shotgun. It's just really easy for Costa give into that and let Rogers do what he wants to do and and dominate with the passing game and it really you know creates a problem for your defense on the field too much and the cowboys at that. That experience But I I think what you'll see is you'll see a lot more Short passes a lot more emphasis on run after the catch a lot. More the running back involved in the past gingrich good for a guy like Tony Pollard. And Ezekiel Elliott. Quite frankly at fifty or seventy seven catches most franchise history for running back. I think think they like to have a tight end that to control the middle of the field so jarring would certainly seemingly be a pretty good fit in this offensive scheme But but that's a big part of what has to happen is Mike has got to be aware of the need to run the football. And you know that that's something that you just cannot be good work given the commitment that the cowboys a faith. If you want to know you know how effective this offense still is. I mean this is what the this this is Mike. Shanahan you know offense essentially and so it's Kyle Shanahan is running With the forty niners they were among the best running teams in football. It's what the Iran's are using and obviously todd Gurley two years ago. It was one of the best running backs in football. And so I think Zeke can fit but Mike McCarthy has to keep that in mind nine on a weekly basis as he calls plays in games I think he will and this is going to be interesting. Ed You've been great on this. Appreciate all your TV. Were appreciate you being part of this special edition as we get ready for the Mike. McCarthy era still trying to get used to this this is your. You're it's funny. What you said about the The the him haw and around about Jason. I mean there were reports that Jason was still lobbying for his job. which boy sounds strange range that you wouldn't be able to read the tea leaves but it just says a lot to about this organization and it is point they had to bull on and say we gotta go interview some some people and I think some of these other names you brought up Ed? We're probably in the mix. I'm talking about Zimmer Kubiak some of these others were always at least in the mix but when they get a guy that they felt like was a great fit and had the head coaching experience. They decided let's get this thing done and let's not get an deal. Where we're we're out here waiting on assistant coaches and quite honestly Jerry is just even even galax defense key? Who People are excited about right now because of some of the things he's done what he's he's been able to do a Dalvand Cook and others in Minnesota Jerry? That's not him. I mean the assistant. He was ever going to hire his own homegrown. I like like Jason Witten the thought of him going after even Josh mcdaniels. Who you're a big proponent of it just that never sat right with Jerry because he he decreed that head coaching experience? Well and with Josh mcdaniels you know. He's he's obviously operated in the Patriots you know organization Tation For a head coach in total control of every facet of the football organization. And you know that's not something that Jerry's going to embrace that kind of concept so I think the other other point. And you mentioned Minnesota Minnesota's a team that runs the Shanahan style of offense the West Coast offense. That's why they brought Gary Kubiak in because he runs that system and you look what they've done with. Alvin Cook is a runner and receiver. Like the cowboys have the ability to do that. In my opinion opinion as well and and to your point about Being Strategic and once you've felt comfortable with McCarthy you know immediately following through and making sure that that he doesn't go anywhere else. I think the timing of this was crucial in this way. I think the cowboys were motivated to act decisively once. They had a favorable meeting eating with McCarthy because they knew he was a candidate with three other teams where he'd already interviewed giants the Browns and the panthers and none of those none of those teams we're able to do with the cowboys did because they were still waiting to pursue Josh mcdaniels. He's interviewing in the mall this week. So the cowboys were able to maximize their leverage by being the I commit to McCarthy say hey you may be the Ba- It appears you're the backup guy with those three franchises. This is the biggest job in football. Aw and we are offering to you before anybody else. You don't need to sit around and wait and see where Josh mcdaniels goes. No you're the second choice of whoever offers you a job after that. We've got a team ready to win. We play in the Big Room in Vegas as Bill parcells once compared it to being Frank Sinatra playing the main showroom And so I think they made a compelling case to Mike McCarthy and the timing for them was exquisite in yet to get to stay at Jerry's house else that just that was the end of it. I think I compare this to you and you had some time off to kind of think about things and put your analytics crew together in really spend some time thinking. That's what McCarthy did in when he did make a point about that if I talked to Mike McCarthy's not the agents early on in this process trace Armstrong and one of the points he made when I asked him about this perception. You know Mike's kind curmudgeonly you know guy who's kind of stuck in a traditional football mindset you know. He said that Mike actually created an animal. The first analytics department with the packers Akers was all of the funding Four hirings and for any kind of technology that needs to be purchased to go through throughtout Thompson. And he just was not a big proponent of that because he was a former scout so he believed scouts intuition over any kind of analytical analysis data They couldn't get it approved. They could get the computers. I liked that you. What he I hope Jerry will approve will approve? So you know he famously asked Dan Reeves chiefs. He lost him over asking him to clock in in Dan Reeves said no but I do think Jerry is open to analytics. So we will See Ed great stuff. Appreciate all your work at at the star. And I'M GONNA I'm leaving the plush free donation productions. I may just drive out there and bring you something you just tell me. What do you need to eat? "It is Matt Moseley alongside. Edward R actually is at the star as we speak. He is in shadows of The star out there with all the breaking news that has happened it was the first to To basically have it for. ESPN that Jason Garrett was out they finally made it official yesterday afternoon and then Ed The word goes out this morning. That Mike McCarthy is the head coach of the cowboys Ed from a timing standpoint. First first of all they had while Jason was not quite officially out although obviously they'd given every indication that they were moving on because they already interviewing people. Marvin Lewis was was in the mix and then Mike McCarthy the cowboys go ahead and get that thing done and then we hear more that that Mike McCarthy the state over at the Jones home and then so I guess Sunday Head breakfast over there gene probably did some put some good things together. Ed Any surprise from you how quickly this thing unfolded and With with Mike McCarthy well you know it's it's interesting to me that it took them a full week to officially announce the Jason Garrett would not return to the cowboys coach and it took a less than a day to officially replace him with with Mike. McCarthy and obviously McCarthy has contributed greatly to Jason Garrett's demise here because he twice life ended recent cowboys seasons in the playoffs by beating them. Even though you could argue he had the inferior team with the packers but You know I I think one surprise to to the fan base will be How precise in terms they were in targeting who they were we're interested in You know they created the illusion that many believe it they were going to pursue some of these high profile. Expensive College coaches given that you know that sort of where the NFL game is going now. It's more being influenced by college football and is the NFL influencing the way games played at the college level. And so I think there's a little bit of a surprise but you don't if you if you have a team full of veterans that you think are ready to win and have just been poorly coach in motivated and therefore underachieve then making a move in this direction with a proven. NFL head coach. I think makes a lot of sense. You know this is. He's GonNa be the head coach in cowboys history. He's held up the lombardi trophy in the very stadium. That Jerry Jones built although history suggests that's a negative because six. NFL coaches have had to franchise in Super Bowl was but nobody in NFL. History is won the super bowl two different teams as Shirley Jones family expects McCarthy to do but You know just talking to people here. I think they felt like I asked somebody we would do. You have to get out of this next head coach that was lacking under Garrett and and the list provided me by sources was three things fear accountability and discipline. Now Mike McCarthy had all of those things things early in his career when he was waiting with the packers those sort of things disappeared in his final two or three seasons leading him. Being fired during the Stephen Edward or has been at some of these super bowls is in embedded with some of these teams in. So obviously. You've come across Mike McCarthy over your years. Here's Mike McCarthy kind of interestingly Ed hold up with the NFL network recently and then also with our friend. Peter King and talked of you know kind of some things he you did While the his one season out of football to stay prepared and to be even better prepared for his next Opportunity Hey he had a head coaching Interview I believe with the jets had smother interests that he decided not to pursue and then he sort of had a club that he was there in Green Bay that he put together and tried. Domos keep a staff together while he was out from that report and he said he would put an analytics group together. From what you've been able to gather. What do you feel like Mike? McCarthy felt like he needed to change or what has changed about his approach that we might find the little different from his long and successful run with the Green Bay packers. Yeah he did in his season away from football After being fired by the packers and not being hired by the jets job he lost Adam. Gays he did get together and higher. Essentially a six. This person coaching staff that met regularly with him in Green Bay and the attempt was to sort of modernize his offensive and defensive philosophies to prepare game plans and play books and you know sort of coaching guide as to what they were going to I do when they got another opportunity. You know emotional and family familial standpoint you said. His family really needed football again that that was something that was the centerpiece of their existence distances. A family and it was something that they desperately needed to get back to. And it'll be. This is going to be interesting because you know it's going to represent a change in offensive philosophy. beat the cowboys in that. You know he's going to bring in the west coast offense of concepts While the cowboys had adopted some of that in their playbook this his last year with Kelly Moore calling the plays. The terminology is going to be significantly different. But I I did talk to Brett. Farve About this this marriage between the cowboys and Dak Prescott and like McCarthy who you know he played for for much of his career and he thought it was an ideal situation. Nation that McCarthy would would create a great platform and his offense per DAK Prescott To have success that he would be brash brash he would be creative he would be confident he would be believable. You know all of those important qualities in inheriting pretty experienced football team at least on the offensive subsiding fall. I think they'll be even bigger changes on the defensive side under Mike Nolan that we can get into later But this is a guy who comes with a lot of credibility but I think the biggest question would be you know. Why did Mike McCarthy for thirteen years in Green Bay Brett farve and Aaron Rodgers as quarterbacks and only win one super the one that he wanted North Texas Super Bowl forty five And I think if you look at the end of his career last three years you know. He was not terribly successful than and there was a lot of criticism that is offensive approach to this play calling lacked imagination and creativity and that he basically went to three wide receiver sets with a single back And then let air rogers just beer and Rogers in an attempt to win the game. Now I covered a lot of packer games. I like Mike Mike McCarthy he's a really engaging guys a serious guy he's a regular guy people would love him But the one thing that that I I always took away way was he didn't seem to be as committed to executing the running game on game day with his play calling as he would profess to be in talking to the media before the game You know until he obviously had a great runner an Era Jones who was greatly underutilized By Him and his coaching staff last year because this year he set packer records under Matt. Leflore the first year coach in Green Bay. Who's won the division advanced of the divisional round of the playoffs But Mike McCarthy didn't have a thousand yard rusher since Eddie Lacy Twenty fourteen so if you've committed you know your organization running the football. When you're making new Zeke Elliot? The highest paid back in football. Now I think Mike is going to have to figure out a way to make sure that the running game is a big part of what he does on a regular basis. He didn't do with that in Green Bay. You know it is I hear boy. You've had great information on on. ESPN and you've been on TV all day and In in really have enjoyed all all that but this is from a visceral standpoint. How do fans react to this This is not the most exciting name. This is a retread that said I think Kansas City has had tremendous success with what you'd call a retread head coach. Andy Reid had really grown grown stelle. He'd had great success for years with the Eagles but I think his time had truly come to an end in. And we're going to see now similar to Andy Reid's age when he you got to Kansas City. Is this coach sitting there. Fifty six years old wanted one more shot at this and now gets it and in a sense. That's what Italy did with Wade Phillips. oops he was at a similar age. Maybe a little bit older when he took over the cowboys. Job But You Know I. It's people that have done. It have been productive. Ed One thing Al bring up you know the Saints Organization as as well as anybody. What's funny is isn't it interesting? How in our minds some coaches or more exciting than others? I mean if we took his record and put it. Next to SEAN PAYTON'S IT won't be too dissimilar. In fact ill a one twenty five seventy seven and two do I think is the name that stands out in my you know as is the number stands out in my mind right now. And they both he and Sean Tab the Super Bowl but isn't it interesting. We still still think of. Sean is sort of that genius quarterback Guru kind of guy. And we don't necessarily have those same feelings toward award Mike McCarthy but but you know obviously the results in a sense but both of them had great quarterbacks Payton's been connected to drew drew brees. You know the the entire time. And as you mentioned McCarthy's had rogers in in Brett farve but we give Sean Payton more credit. People get more excited about him and I you know I. I just wonder how you react to that. Well I think that you know Jerry Jones could hire anybody football maybe even before he tire bill. Ballot check He would hire Sean Payton. I think he regards Sean Payton as the single most talented a person to ever be allowed to to leave the organization. And but yeah I mean but what you said about McCarthy and Peyton is true I mean I mean this is the third time that Jerry's hired a head coach with previous. NFL experience built ourselves eventuate. billips McCarthy is an accomplished guy. He Won Petr Board Games in eight different seasons in his thirteen years in Green Bay. He's won ten playoff games. which is the most by packers coach in franchise history and in Ohio Valley? A number only exceeded by bill belichick since McCarthy became the head coach. And if you want consistency I mean he's let a single franchise to eight consecutive consecutive playoff appearances. You know who's done that. Tom Landry Chuck Knoll. Bill Belichick Mike McCarthy. So He's a very accomplished guy I I oh I think he I think he lost his passionate interest To a certain degree you know late in Green Bay and you know maybe this year way has energized. He'll bring that Total organization that I think needs that I think they got tired of the Jason Garrett Approach Jason Garrett Message. Everything's fine don't worry about anything. I think we're GonNa win no matter what anybody else says. You know. We're not the problem the problems outside the building. Just don't listen to all that I don't think that'll be McCarthy it's obviously going to be a huge transition for him In terms of you go from this tiny smallest professional sports town in in in America in Green. The Bay Where it's it's a publicly owned franchise you know? Mark Murphy and the former general manager that he worked under Ted Thompson soon are very reclusive. They're they're not at all public. They don't speak almost ever and McCarthy was often not allowed to make roster moves in personnel decisions but he always had to account for them publicly and I think he grew frustrated with that role. And certainly. That won't be the situation here in Dallas us where I presume you wouldn't even have ask Jerry Jones to lower public profile so as not to undermine you know his his performance and authority as the head coach. It'll be interesting to see how all those things were addressed specifically as they went through contract points But I would assume that McCarthy earthy is going to embrace the idea more than most coaches would that Jerry Jones is going to stand outside the locker room and he's going to update injuries. He's gotta you no he's GonNa give his Public Opinion Game Strategy and coaching decisions And the performance of players just like he's always done But to some degree that might be a relief for refer like McCarthy. I don't think he craves the spotlight. And that sort of way can you and it is the doomsday podcast. Ed Werder Matt Moseley. Emergency podcast had cast a special edition as the cowboys higher. "Happy Birthday to one Jameis Winston and apparently Josh Allen was like I wanna live James Spirits. You really did. The question is like what do you get. The Guy who gives gifts. Everybody boy is given to your friends. Yeah that's true. That's true a bit too generous in every way. But we begin with Mike McCarthy. He's new head coach of the only team that can dominate playoff news cycle despite not actually actually making the playoffs. All we'd we'd waited for Dallas to replace Jason Garrett who may still be wearing his cowboys game day outfit somewhere outside the facility but now Jerry Arena Jones's Picky fifty-six-year-old McCarthy who got fired in two thousand eighteen after a dozen years and nine playoff berths in one super bowl in Green Bay. So Bo how cowboys always fans feel about their new head guy led a new ball. Sounds a lot like the old boss. If you had a guy that was basically an office dude running your team and one of the questions was about whether his offense was imaginative enough to get the most out of the players he had. You just went in hired the same do now will confuse me about this with the cowboys is you could have had eddie much more exhaustive search than this. It seemed like they started off with the idea that this is the guy that they wanted to hire and then they went ahead and did that. He has a resume that takes a lot of boxes. However however if you've gotta do that could not get the most out of the peak of Aaron Rodgers career? I don't know why you think he's going to get a super bowl with you. What you've got now even though your quarterback bags pretty damn good and he reminds me of Garrett in a different way as well because Jerry Jones clearly picked someone who is not going to win? You many press conferences. This was not a higher that you make for a splash. Lincoln Riley is not urban Meyer. He's not any of the newfangled guys. Were there's some new car. "Eight people had been murdered on the investor. As I mentioned earlier, the authorities did a poor job investigating this crime, especially during the critical first few days, even the prosecuting attorney admitted at trial, that thority is badly mishandled the investigation. Police weren't able to extinguish the fire on the investor until the day after it started by then almost no forensic evidence remained, and the troopers couldn't be even be certain. How many victims had died on the boat when the responding officer was informed that the skiff seen leaving the burning boat was tied at the cold storage. Doc hit, examined it briefly. But decided the rain would have washed away, anything or prince, so he didn't bother to impound the boat and look at it more closely. The officer didn't even realize skiff in question belong to the investor. The thirties did have the eyewitness description of the man who bought the gasoline and sped. Away from the burning boat in the skiff, considering the number of people who saw and even spoke to the man, you would think their descriptions would lead authorities to a suspect. Remember Craig's a town of only twelve hundred people unfortunately, the eyewitness descriptions of the young suspect were vague. I wondered how this could be possible, then I thought about what the town of Kodiak near where I live is like on a summer day when the commercial salmon season is closed, and the fishermen crowd. The port the town is full of twenty year old men and women crew members a few of these young people are locals, but most have recently come to Kodiak hoping to secure a job on a fishing boat for the summer, the locals, don't know. These people even though Craig is a small town in the summer, it is flooded with commercial fishermen from other parts of Alaska from Washington and from Oregon and other places. A stranger is in town is the norm not the exception. Also all this Sherman look alike. An Assane skiff. They wear bright orange fishing gear and often have their hoods cinch tight. How could anyone be expected to recognize the features and physical build of a person wearing a bulky waterproof jacket and coveralls? The investigators believed the crew members of the investor were killed one or two at a time as they return to the boat Sunday night. They determine Mark, and I read Colt Hearst and Mike, Stewart were shot with a twenty two caliber weapon did the killer remain on the investor the entire night, or did he leave and return, again the next morning when he ran the investor to fish egg island. When he arrived at fiche guyland. He anchored, the investor in deep water and opened the seat. Cox expecting the boat sink. He was. Almost certainly surprised to see the investor still floating when the fog cleared. And this is when he purchased gasoline and took the saints. Give back to the investor to set it on fire. For over a year. Investigators chase leads with little luck. But when thirties, finally released an artist's rendering based on, I witness accounts of the suspicious man who had been in the investor Saint skiff at the time. The fire began several fishermen came forward to say they recognize the man in the sketch. They identified him as John, Kenneth peel, a Bellingham man who had once crude for Mark Coulter. St-. A thorns questioned. The crew of the Libby, eight the boat where peel was living and working as a crewman his fellow crew members were at first reluctant to say anything, which might land peel in prison for the murders. But eventually, Larry Demnard the captain of Libya told troopers he was sleeping aboard his boat, the night or early morning of the murders. Would he woke suddenly at two AM? He heard something that sounded like pop pop pop pop and said it resembled the backfire of a small engine. Then he claims he heard the blood curdling scream of a woman, a few minutes later, he said he looked out the cabin door of his boat and saw a man walking across the decks of the decade and defiant, caring rifle. He recognized the man as John peel Demer said he was scared and return to his state room locking the door. He then heard. Someone jumped onto the deck of the Libby. Eight Demnard feared for his life. But said a few minutes later he heard the person leave the boat. Demnard said he'd known John peel for many years and considered a good friend. He felt very uneasy about testifying against peel. Don home, strum, a crew member on the Libya, eight and John Peel's. Former girlfriend was even more hesitant than Demnard to tell investigators what peel said to her after the murders. When the troopers pressed her though, she finally admitted to a conversation she had with peel soon after the massacre. She said peel, started crying and told her it all happened so fast. I can't believe I did it. Thirties arrested, John, Kenneth peel, nearly two years to the day after the murders and two years. Later in January, nineteen Eighty-six the trial proceedings began in Katcha can jury selection took more than a month with the prosecution defense fighting over every juror the animosity between the prosecution and defense carried over into the trial. And while both sides argued over evidence the case dragged on for six months, becoming the longest running trial in Alaska history. The superior court trial, judge admonished, both the prosecution and defense for their backhanded tactics the state admitted they had only circumstantial evidence against peel and much of the evidence was either based on witnesses who said they saw peel in the investor skiff or saw peel purchase gasoline before the blaze started on the investor the state said, peels motive was revenge. Because Coulter's had fired peel, the previous year, Larry Demnard in Don home, strum, where the core witnesses for the prosecution Demer claimed he saw hill walking away from the investor carrying a rifle, and according to home, strum peel confessed to her he'd murdered the crew of the investor. Unfortunately, neither witness was reliable, and neither wanted to be responsible for putting peel in prison for the rest of his life, both dimmer and Holmstrom change. Their testimony several times, peels defense attorney picked apart the eyewitness testimony pointing out the inconsistencies and making clear. Some witnesses had changed their stories or had trouble remembering the events from four years earlier. The defense also suggested the killings were the result of a drug deal gone bad. But the defense never introduced any drug evidence into the trial record. The defense also hinted that either Heyman our moon. In could have been the murder since there remains were never positively identified after six months of testimony the jurors deliberated six days before declaring themselves deadlocked. The jurors agreed not to talk to the press. But journalist reported, they voted seven to five for quibble, two years later. The state brought peel back to trial this time the trial was held in Juneau, the second trial lasted only three months mainly because the defense decided to call. No witnesses after the prosecution presented its case, the jury deliberated four days before acquitting peel on all charges of murder and arson. The investigation into trials cost the state of Alaska, nearly three million dollars even after a jury acquitted peel state officials insisted peel had murdered Mark Coulter's his family and crew no one else has ever been charged with the massacre aboard the investor. In nineteen ninety peel, sued the state of Alaska for one hundred and seventy five million dollars for wrongful prosecution. The suit was based on a nineteen Eighty-four memo from one of the lead. Investigators indicating there was no direct evidence tying peel to the crime in nineteen Ninety-seven peel agreed to a nine hundred thousand dollar settlement, the authorities and district attorney stated early in them vestich in that drugs were not involved in the investor murders but room resp- flowed suggesting there were drugs on the investor and some people believed drugs were the reason for the killings. No foundation for this rumor was ever proven though, people in Craig did not know the Coulter's and their crew. Well, since they usually did not deliver their fish to the cannery, and Craig and probably only did, so this time because they were on their way back to Washington, where they lived. The investor was a beautiful boat own. Owned by young man. So rumors floated that drug money had been used to buy the vote, but no one ever supplied the evidence to support this claim to crewmen who worked with John peel the year after the murders claimed he admitted to them. He had murdered the crew of the investor. But their statements were suspect the Coulter's family continues to believe John peel, killed Mark Coulter's and the others on the investor. Mark's mother Sally told a reporter, she thinks peel, freaked out and did it because he was jealous of Mark and the boat and Matt Mark, because he fired him from his previous boat. There is no evidence Heyman and moon escaped the blaze and thirties believed they were killed along with their crewmates what happened on the investor on September night in nineteen eighty two. Many believe they know who killed the crew and passengers. So the investor but only the killer knows why the massacre occurred. Thank you for listening..

"Commercial fishing is one of the most economically important industries in Alaska, and the three months salmon season in the summer is one of the most lucrative fisheries in the nineteen seventies and nineteen eighties when salmon prices were at their highest three months of hard work could earn the captain and crew of a fishing boat, a half million dollars or more. A crew member on a salmon saner can make good money. But he must work hard and put in long hours, crewing on a fishing boat is a job for young people willing to work and ready to play on those rare nights when the season is closed and their boat pulls into port. This gruesome tale occurred near the small southeastern Alaska town of Craig on prince of Wales island. It might be difficult understand why and how such a murder could happen in a small town and more importantly, how no one seemed to know who the murderer was I confess. I don't completely understand this crime either. But I'll do my best to describe what a small fishing villages like when the fleet is import. And how someone running around town of twelve hundred people might go unnoticed or at least unrecognized in Alaska, the two most common ways of commercially fishing, for salmon are either by gill-netting, or by per seining, a gillnet operation is land based, where the fishermen go out and small boats to pull salmon from along net attached to the shore per seining is done from a larger boat on which the cruise. Sleeps eats and lives during the salmon season per se actively searched for schools of salmon, and circle the fish with their net and pull the fish on board. The events of this story happened on a purse seining. I hate to criticize law enforcement. Investigators have a tough job, no matter where they work. But the Alaska state troopers have the especially difficult task a trolling this vast state with their small force as I will explain though the police response in this case was slow and the investigation far from perfect. The facts Sunday September fifth nineteen eighty two the investor a fifty eight foot per saner owned by Mark Coulter's from Blaine Washington pulled into Craig Alaska and unloaded its reason catch of seventy seven thousand pounds a pink salmon onto a whole Beck. Seafood's tender, the catch from just a few days of fishing was worth thirty three thousand dollars. But the cannery wouldn't pay Coulter's for this, or any of these other catches of the summer until the end of the season. The Alaska department officiant game had temporarily closed the commercial salmon season but plan to reopen it the following day for the final salmon opening of nineteen eighty two. This is the way the commercial salmon fishing works, Alaska. The season is open for a few days, and then close for few days, and then reopened again the purpose of the closures is to ensure some salmon Willis Cape. The nets. To swim up the streams and spawn. So when the investor pulled into the dock and Craig, the salmon season had closed, but it was scheduled to reopen, again, the following day besides Mark cold Hurst the crew and passengers on the investor included. Mark's wife, Irene twenty eight their two children, Kimberly five and John four marks cousin Mike, Stewart nineteen dean moon, nineteen Jerome kion nineteen and Chris Heyman eighteen Irene was three months pregnant after unloading. Its catch the investor pulled up to the north cove, DOK, and Craig and the crew tied the boat outside a saner named decade which in turn was tied outside the saner defiant. The defiant was tied to the dock to get back and forth to the dock the crew from the investor had to climb across the decks of the other two boats. So. Oh, when returning to their boat from the dock the crew of investor had to climb across the deck of the defiant, and then across the deck of the decade to reach the deck of their boat. Dean, moon and Jerome key on two of the crewmen on the investor went ashore, soon after the boat docked. According to the troopers, the two men later bought a small quantity of drugs from a friend named John, Kenneth peel peel had been crewman for Mark Coulter's. The previous summer on another boat but Coulter's had fired him and pill was now crewing on the saner the Libby, eight and the libbey eight was also tied to the dock near the investor while on shore Jerome kion place to call to his brother and his brother later stated Jerome sounded normal and didn't indicate anything was wrong. Mike Stewart and Chris Heyman. Two of the other men left the investor together. But the troopers could find no one in Craig who remembered singlet. Two men that night, Stewart called his home in Bellingham, Washington and didn't mention any sign of trouble. Mark Coulter's apparently had no cash on the boat because he wrote a check for one hundred dollars to a friend for cash, so he could take his family out to dinner at Ruth Ann's restaurant in Craig to celebrate his twenty eighth birthday people at the restaurant later reported nothing unusual happened while the family dined, but one witness said, John, Kenneth peel briefly stopped at the family's table to talk to them. Peel later denied he was ever at the restaurant, the Coulter's left the restaurant at approximately nine thirty PM and a crewman on the decade remembered four year old John sticking his head inside the pilot house to say hi, on the way back to the investor. During the night, a storm with high winds and heavy seas pounded, the dock and the crew of the decade celebrated the end of the salmon season with allowed party with all that noise. No one on the decade or defiance heard anything unusual, and no one on either boat remembered anyone coming or going to the investor. Remember anyone going to the investor from the dock had to climb across the decks of the other two boats at six AM on Monday morning, a decade. Crewmen went out on the deck and saw the investor slowly idling away from the dock. He noticed the crew of the investor had inexplicably left. They're expensive tie-down lines on the deck of the decade. Normally the crew would retrieve these lines and stow them onboard until they're needed again, the decades, crewmen waved at a man in the investor pilothouse and the man returned the wave a few minutes later, the decade skipper. Also came out on deck, and saw man on the deck of the investor at seven thirty AM a crewman on another saner saw the investor anchored across the harbour from Craig near fiche island around that same time. Another witness saw the saints skiff from the investor tied to the cold storage dock, and Craig by ten thirty eight m heavy fog rolled into Craig obscuring, the investor from everyone in town as the fishing fleet prepared for the salmon opening later that day, the investor was forgotten for the moment. The investor saints give, however, was in the way at the cold storage, dock and had to be moved several times during the day, the captain of the decade, thought the investor left the dock because of the loud party on his boat and he radioed the investor to apologize. There was no reply as boats headed out for the salmon opening the fog remained so thick most captains had us radar to navigate. Tuesday morning. One day later, the fog finally lifted and observers and Craig were surprised to see the investor still anchored near fiche guyland. Why didn't Mark Coulter's go out this with the rest of the fleet? A young man was seen buying two and one half gallons of gasoline in Craig, and he then climbed into investor skiff with the gasoline and motored out to the investor at four pm the crew of the fishing boat. Casino notice smoke rising from the investor after alerting authorities the casino headed toward the investor to offer help on the way the captain of the casino, Saul. The investors saying skiff leave the investor and motor toward, Craig, the captain nearly had to ram the skiff to make it stop. And when he asked if there were people on board the burning boat, the same skiff operator said, yes, there's people on the boat. And then he sped toward Craig. Once the mysterious man in the investor skiff reached the Craig doc, he spoke to at least three people before he walked into town and disappeared with the fog, as sate trooper investigator, later said, the man slipped into a time, warp at the end of the dock by the time the casino reached it, the investor was fully engulfed in flames, and too hot for the crew of the casino to approach Alaska state trooper. Bob Anderson was the first law enforcement official to arrive on the scene. No one in Craig had the proper equipment to fight a fire on the water. So the responders issued a mayday call and nearly two hours later a tug with one small pump arrived, and started spraying water on the blaze. The coastguard was contacted to airlift additional pumps to the scene trooper Anderson returned to Craig and called his sergeant in Katcha can telling him the fire was spreading so quickly. He was sure the blaze was arson. His sergeant said he would. Send an arson investigator to the scene at seven thirty pm the tug, captain radioed, the coast guard to tell them the fire was under control Anderson, returned to the investor and bound burn to the gunwales and listing twenty degrees. He and if you volunteers boarded the wreckage and found the charred human remains of four people in what had been the galley of the boat. The remains were later identified as Mark Coulter st- his wife Irene, their daughter, Kimberly, and Mark's cousin Mike Stewart all four had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. As soon as the four bodies were removed. The fire flared up again and destroyed the rest of the cabin. Anderson returned to Craig where police officer told him he had interviewed a witness who saw the suspicious man in investor sane skiff. The witness said, the man was twenty or twenty one years old with light Brown or blond hair, he weighed one hundred fifty to one hundred. And sixty pounds and was wearing glasses and a baseball cap with a logo on it, since the man was seated in the skiff the witness couldn't guess, at his height, the following morning to more law enforcement officials arrived the fire was still burning so the trooper spinally summit a helicopter used for fighting forest fires, and it dumped water on the burning boat. The boat was listing badly. So the officers toted shore and left it there until the arson investigator could examine it oddly, the authorities left the investor unguarded allowing anyone to poke around in the wreckage and the rising tide likely destroyed most of the remaining evidence. Once the arson investigator examined the wreckage. He found more bone, fragments drum qions remains were eventually identified among the fragments. And although it was never determined for certain investigators believed some of the remaining teeth and bones belonged to Chris Heyman and dean moon, no remains a four year old John Coulter's were ever found and investigators believed. His small body was completely consumed by the blaze, although they weren't certain at first the detectives determine the killer was not one of the missing crew members because I witnesses were certain the man. They saw operating the skiff was not a member of the investors crew since neither Chris Heyman Nordine moon was ever seen, again after the fire, they were presumed dead and the police concluded that.

"And fortunately, if some of this evidence had come to light before their trials they might never have been convicted of kidnapping and murdering Laura Henderson MAC appealed, his conviction. But the appellate court found against him on every issue, many of the appeal issues dealt with hearsay evidence. The judge allowed by classifying it as under the excited utterance. Rule. I don't have the legal expertise to discuss these issues. But I will point out a few glaring inconsistencies with the evidence as well as the changing testimony of some key witnesses, and the questionable conduct of the Kodiak depletes department as I mentioned earlier this case was tried in Anchorage. And I think this venue, hurt the defendants because jurors not familiar with Kodiak island roses, stem missed, one of the biggest problems, the prosecution had with their case, the time line with perfect road conditions in good vehicle. It takes a proximity one hour and fifteen minutes to drive round trip from where Laura was last seen, and Kodiak to the end of the road Manashe Kobe, where police and prosecutors claim MAC toss. Laura's body off the cliff the speed limit on the road was fifty five miles per hour at the time of Laura's disappearance MAC had an old van and because the drive shaft was wired to the transmit. Shen. It would not go faster than thirty five miles per hour. Furthermore, according to one Kodiak police officer, the roads were very icy the night, Laura disappeared, and it was nearly impossible to drive more than five miles per hour, yet the prosecution put one witness on the stand who testified she saw van matching the description of max van in Kodiak at nine thirty five and another witness who claimed he saw the white Dan on the road near Manashe Kobe ten to twenty minutes later. It is impossible. Matt could have covered the distance from Kodiak to Manashe bay in such a short amount of time in his ban on those roads. Furthermore, Laura was last seen alive at nine pm, a maximum back into his dorm by ten pm at the latest. How could he have murdered Laura driven all the way to Menasheh bay drug her body to the cliff Tostao into the ocean, and then driven back to town in less than an hour? It's an impossible theory, al-roub will the private investigator, who supposedly follow Laura at night claimed. He last saw her at nine pm. He then went to tell Matt Damon Laura's attorney, he lost track of her Jae, men and ruble. Then admit they saw Jack ibox sitting in a bar between nine thirty and ten pm. So I back also did not have time to drive to Manashe Kobe to dispose of Laura's body. The police were convinced MAC and kirwin toss. Laura's body off the cliff Menasheh bay. But in order to throw her off the Menashe. Kobe cliff the two men had to somehow propel the body of a one hundred and fifty pound or sixty eight kilogram woman straight out from the cliff over distance fifty feet or fifteen point two meters declare the rock outcropping. So she will land in the ocean before max. I trial his attorney asked two men to attempt to throw a sack filled with a hundred and fifty pounds off the cliff and they couldn't do it. The sack ended up on the side of the mountain. The attorney tried to enter the demonstration as evidence but the judge ruled it in it missile, the television show inside edition. Televised a segment on this case and traveled to Kodiak to recreate the prosecution's theory of how the body had been tossed off the cliff into the ocean. They proved it was not possible for two men to. One hundred fifty pound body, fifty feet horizontally before it began to plummet into the ocean after Jim Kerr was acquitted in his first trial. The prosecution suggested MAC through the by op cliff by himself, which is even more impossible. I mentioned earlier, how close similar to those worn by lower the night, she disappeared conveniently washed up in the surf near Manashe obey months, later Manashe bay like most areas of Kodiak island gets pounded by surf and storm surges not to mention the motion of large tidal fluctuations in the area. It is highly unlikely, the clothes would have stayed in one place for such a long time. The clothes recovered from the surfer not faded when they were found and one police officer admitted they did not look, as, if they had been in the ocean long, the pink shoe with the band aid in it also makes no sense since the band was in the wrong shoe, and what happened to lower socks. Also, why would Laura have been carrying an old purse with an expired, driver's license, instead of the per, she usually carried why were none of these questions asked at trial? Laura Henderson, was, obviously not killed, and max van there was no blood or tissue van in the van. But police claimed violent struggle took place in the van, and they suggested Laura struggled so hard, she kicked a cargo window in the van and cracked it the previous owner of the van testified the window was already cracked, when he sold the van to MAC in the forensics expert who processed the van stated, he saw no evidence a crime taking place in the van. I think it's interesting Jim Kerr win stated repeatedly. He was with MAC the entire evening, March twenty eighth nineteen eighty six but kirwin was found not guilty of all charges. Why was kirwin not called by max attorney to testify, Amax whereabouts? And the events of the night question, the first thorough search max van provided no evidence but nine days before the first trial was to begin a psychic suggested police searched the van again so after receiving. Psychics advice Kodiak police department corporal Paris, when alone to inspect the unsecured van at BRUCE'S wrecking yard Paris, claimed he looked in the window and saw something glistening near the gas pedal. So he sent two detectives to search the van again, and they found the critical evidence of an earring similar in appearance to the earrings Lawrence was wearing the night. She disappeared the search the van was conducted outside the presence of BRUCE'S wrecking yard employee. A violation of the contract between BRUCE'S wrecking yard the Kodiak police department, but despite the fact, the airing was found in unsecured van the judge had no qualms about allowing the earring to be entered into evidence at trial. When police I interviewed Loris co workers, only one claim to know Laura was planning to meet a mysterious man on the evening of March. Twenty eighth nineteen eighty six but she said, Laura did not know who the man was and did not recognize his voice on the phone when he called to set up the meeting when place asked the co workers to come into the station to write their statements though, they put all the co workers in a room together and suddenly Loris colleagues, all recalled that Laura was planning to meet a man named Matt, in a white van the night, she disappeared. Why did their statements change where they fed information? They got max name wrong. And instead of riding the name MAC MAC in their statements. They use the name Matt. M. A. T T A matte. M A, T T was the name of Laura's attorney. So what did those statements mean? Owlry. Ruble, the private investigator tasked with watching over Laura, while she met the mysterious stranger changed his story several times he first told police he sat in his car at an agreed upon spot, and when Laura drove past him, he waited until she got out of her car. And then he drove past her in the white van to find a better vantage spot. He said he lost side of the van for only a minute, but the van with Laura, in it disappeared during the time, it was out of his view. He then changed his story and said, he got out of his car and walked down the street to get a better view in Los side of the van, he then changed story, one more time and said he remained parked in the same spot the entire time. A MAC drove away out of his sight, Laura, disappeared in a quiet section of a small town. L rubel was either a very bad detective a bad liar. Or both numerous. People have suggested our bull, knew much more about Laura's disappearance than he admitted some believe he was the last person to see Laura alive. And they believe he knows what happened to her. It is suspicious that, when ruble, lost track of Lora, he did not attempt to find her. He did not search any of the numerous bars in the area, nor ask anyone, if they had seen Laura he simply reported her disappearance to Mant Jason, and they called the police to report a kidnapping. What happened to Laura Henderson? Sadly, we probably will never know what happened to Laura Henderson. She disappeared over thirty three years ago and her remains still have not been found Laura Henderson was involved in the drug community and Kodiak. And she was a police informant at drug dealer. By the name of Jane James McLaughlin, told several people he killed Laura Henderson because she knew too much about his drug dealings. And he suspected, she was planning to inform on him to the place. The place were aware a McLaughlin's admission, but they chose to ignore it, it is also very possible MAC and James eyeball were involved in Laura's murder, but the facts of this case proved the murder, did not occur. In the manner suggested by the Kodiak police department and the prosecutors. Thank you for listening. And if.

"The man and Laura agreed to meet at nine pm near the king crab. Cantering Kodiak, and he promised to give her the tape at the meeting at three o'clock on the afternoon. Laura disappeared. Donald McDonald who goes by the name of MAC stopped by the crisis center to talk to hinder Sohn, according to MAC, he and Laura were friends, and had dated a few times, he claims he stopped by the center to invite Laura to a dance. He was co hosting to raise money for Kodiak hope house. A drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility were MAC, resided, Laura, politely declined, his invitation, but asked him if he would find her some cocaine again, according to Mack, he had been clean, and sober for several months and had no intention of scoring drugs for Laura, but he promised to try to get into the drugs for her only because. Because he wanted an excuse to see her. Again. Laura told MAC, she would be on shell cough street to meet someone around nine pm. And if he had drugs, she would meet him there, Matt claimed he and Laura had been friends for quite a while, the police, however, stated, MAC, Laura, were not acquainted and instead, they believed MAC was the mysterious stranger who toll, Laura. He had a tape incriminating her ex husband friends testified at trial that MAC and Laura knew each other. So Matt could not be the mysterious man to whom Laura had referred lowers coworkers testified. Laura told them MAC offered her information, she could use against eyeball, and they said, MAC toll, Laura. He would meet her at nine pm to give her the incriminating tape. So let me recap MAC and his friends claim MAC, Laura knew each other, so MAC. Not be the mysterious stranger the police and Loris co workers though, testified. Mac and Laura did not know each other, and MAC was the stranger who told Laura. He had incriminating evidence against her ex husband. After her shift at the crisis center, ended, Laura went to her lawyer, Matt James office and told him about the nine PM meeting. She indicated she did not know the man, she would be meeting Jane was concerned about the meeting and hired a private investigator named Albert ruble, to follow lower and watch over her ruble, agree detail, Laura to the meeting, and to watch her from a nearby hidden location at nine pm, Laura drove to the king crab, cannery for her meeting, odd her way to the cannery, she passed ruble, who was sitting in his car as soon as Laura past him ruble, claims, he started his car and followed her as he near the Kanner. He saw Henderson's car parked behind a white van, and as he drove past the van, he saw Laura inside the van talking to someone at this point Rupel change distort several times, but he, I stated he drove past the van and was out of sight of the van for less. Than a minute. But during that crucial minute the van disappeared Bruegel said he searched the area and then reported Henderson's disappearance along with description of the van and the license plate number to the police, then according to ruble, he Jamison and hitter. Since parents searched for the van several hours later, hint, Laura, Henderson stepfather spotted van matching rubles description parked at the rehab center where MAC with staying max version of the events of that night, or slightly different than rubles. He says he ate dinner at his dorm. And then went to McDonald's restaurant for dessert with Gladys Baldwin, the house, mother of his rehab, dorm, and his friend, Jim kirwin, who was homeless, and living in max van at the time not long after they left. Mcdonalds, Matt drop Gladys back at the dorm. And then he and Kerr when drove around town for a while they met Laura on shell cov street, and she got into. Max van she asked MAC, if he had been able to score her some cocaine and soon after she learned he did not have the drugs, she exited his van. He says she was in the van no longer than five minutes, Maxine back into his dorm between nine fifty and ten pm at we know this timeframe is certain because several other people signed in after him at ten pm, the house manager, then locked the house, so no one could leave during the night. And one of the other residents testified he watched a movie with MAC until one AM the following morning. So we know MAC was back in his dorm, before ten pm, where he spent the night as you will see later this time line is important. In understanding this case. Mack was arrested the following day and his van was impounded. James kirwin max friend, who was living in max van was also arrested. Police found three knives imacs possession and two firearms and his van according to court documents, the ban was dirty and wet, but police photos show, a neatly organized van one of the vans cargo windows was cracked and police testified it had been broken from the inside shortly before the van was seized the previous owner of the van though testified the window was already broken when he sold the Vanak the place search of the van yielded little evidence. They found no blood or tissue residue in the van, and although they found fingerprints in the van belonging to fifty nine people, none of the prince belonged. Laura Henderson, or her ex husband, Jack I Bach police also compared soil samples from under the frame of the van and from the tire grooves, too. A place where they allege MAC dumped Laura's body, but the soil samples, did not match police did find the back from an earring in the van, and an instamatic camera when they develop the film in the camera, they found photos of MAC and Kerr went outside a cabin a soon located the cabin at the end of Menasheh bay road of forty minute drive from Kodiak the police postulated that Jack Ibaka hired MAC to murder, Laura MAC, then met, Laura, at nine pm on March twenty eighth nineteen eighty six got her into his ban killed her drove to Manashe Kobe near the cabin. He had photographed and he encouraged when tossed her body off cliff as I will explain shortly. There are several problems with this theory. A witness said at nine thirty five pm on March twenty eighth. She saw and matching the description of max van leaving residents near where MAC lived, according to the witness the driver pulled out of the driveway and front of her, and swerved all over the road. Another witness reported that between nine forty five and ten pm. He saw white van near the end of the Manashe bay road. Police learn that Jim kirwin Jack I Bach knew each other, and reportedly had met several times in the month preceding. Laura's disappearance, according to other witnesses Jack I Bach made several statements, claiming he wished his ex wife would disappear. One friend stated Jack told her he wanted to kill Laura and he said he planned to pay a man to do the job. The hitman Ibaka, described to his friend. Bet the general description of Jin, Jim kirwin. Police arrested Jack I Bach and he MAC. And Jim kirwin were all charged with kidnapping and murder of Laura Henderson. In the months leading up to the trial, several items of clothing matching, what Laura reportedly had been wearing when she disappeared washed up in the surf at Menasheh bay below the cliff where police say MAC and kirwin stood as they toss. Laura's body into the ocean the clothing look suspiciously undamaged as if it had not been in the ocean. For several months, a purse also washed up, and while the purse did belong to Laura, it was one, she hadn't carried in years and had long since given to her daughters to play with inside the purse police van Laura's expired, driver's license from Oregon instead of recurrent, Alaska driver's license, even more curious was a shoe found in the surf Laura's, mother told police Laura had been wearing size nine pink shoes on the night. She disappeared. Her mother also said, Laura recently had undergone surgery on her foot to remove a planters, wort and was still wearing the band aid on the foot. Put the shoe found in the ocean was a left shoe. And sure enough, there was a band-aid in it after all the legal proceedings were over though, trial records included. A report from Laura's podiatrist indicating Laura surgery had been on her right foot. Not on her left foot in any case. It was called the night, Lord disappeared. And she must have been wearing socks. So how did abandoned end up in her shoe, instead of inner sock in August nineteen eighty six two months before the trial was to begin Kodiak police department corporal, Michael Andre saw an advertisement for psychic and a police magazine and decided to contact the psychic about the case, the psychic told Andre to search max van again. And even though max van already had been thoroughly searched Andre sent Kodiak. Police department corporal berry Paris alone to inspect the van after the original search max van. The van had been moved to an unsecured wrecking yard. And this is where Paris reportedly looked through the driver's side window and saw something glistening near the gas pedal Paris, then instructed to of his subordinates to take a closer look at the van and on the floor implant site. They discovered a porcelain earring with a purple flower painted on it. Just like the Iranians Laura Henderson had last been seen wearing the police deduce the during struggle, Laura's earring had been knocked from her ear and had traveled down the front window defrost or slot. They then speculated that when they towed, the van to the wrecking yard, the jarring motion caused the earring to fall through the heater defrost or system to the floor max lawyer, nor anyone else ever tried prove or disprove this theory, but it has since been determined if the earring had followed the path the police suggested, it would have ended up on the floor of the heat or housing deliver. Dery system and not on the floor of the van the first trial for MAC. Jack I Bach and James kirwin began on October twenty seventh nineteen eighty six in Anchorage. Alaska, I think it is relevant to the outcome of this case that the men were tried in Anchorage and nod in Kodiak, because most Kodiak residents would have realized there was a problem with the prosecution's time line. In the case each defendant, had his own lawyer, and while they were tried together their guilt, or innocence was to be determined separately by the jury Jim kirwin was acquitted of all charges while Jack I Bach received a hung jury on both charges. The jury was also deadlocked on the charge of murder for MAC. The fountain him guilty of kidnapping Laura Henderson, Jack I Bach and MAC were tried again in Anchorage in mid April. Nineteen eighty-seven both MAC and Jack had inept attorneys. Especially at their second trial, max attorney promised to let him testify and said she would call Jim kirwin as an alibi witness for him. But something happened at the last minute, and she rested, her case without calling any witnesses or allowing MAC detested by she reportedly still will not answer questions regarding this case. Both Jack ibex and MAC were found guilty of the murder of Laura Henderson, and they were both sentenced to ninety nine years in prison. Much has been written about this case in the more than thirty years since Donald MacDonald, Jack, I Bach were sentenced..

"Alaska this murder mystery in the last frontier, with your host, Robin bear field in a land full of peril and vicious animals. Humans are the most dangerous predators of all. Welcome to murder mystery in the last frontier. I'm your host Robin bear field. And I live and work in the middle of the Kodiak, national wildlife refuge on Kodiak island, in Alaska, this episode covers the disappearance of a woman right here on Kodiak island in nineteen eighty six. What happened to Laura Henderson? This is one of the most controversial court cases in the history of the state of Alaska at best. This case is an example of an inept police investigation. A prosecution determined to win at any cost and inadequate defense counsel at worse this case represents a corrupt police force, and perhaps a corrupt judicial system. No one can even prove a crime occurred, because a body was never found yet to men have been sentenced to serve ninety nine years in prison for the murder of Laura Henderson. It is unlikely lower is alive since none of her friends or family, including her two daughters have heard from her since March twenty eighth nineteen eighty six. But what happened to her is still very much in question. Let me tell you the facts. And then you decide if this crime happened the way, the prosecutors claimed it did this case involves many individuals with conflicting stories and testimony that changed over time. I will do my best to keep the various players and their story straight for you. Laura Henderson disappeared on March twenty eighth nineteen eighty six and this is one of the few certainties in this case, Laura Henderson had recently, divorced, Jack, I Bach. Her husband of seven years, and the two were engaged in a contentious custody battle over their two daughters. They currently shared custody of their children, but Laura was seeking sole custody. So she and her daughters could move to Oregon..

"Knit community of residents within a fifty mile radius of McCarthy back at their home and Kennecott the Nashes bundled Richards onto a sled and towed it behind their snow machine as they sped toward McCarthy and the airstrip when they reached the airstrip. They met Gary green a pilot and guide green was cleaning off his airplane. And when he heard their story, he told them he had seen Hastings twenty minutes earlier heading towards a Hegley house. Tim Nash, volunteer, to check on the headlines, while green warmed up his plane in preparation to fly Richards to Glen Allen forty minutes away for medical care. Green said he would contact the troopers and request their assistance. As green was loading Richards into the plane. Amy Nash saw her husband, running down the airstrip toward them. He had just been to the Haglund's house, where he'd smelled the accurate, aroma of gunsmoke and had seen blood splattered over the interior of the house. Tim believe the headphones were dead and said when he walked into the kitchen, he saw Hastings standing on the back porch Nash fired at Hastings and missed. But when Hastings returned fire he struck Nash in the right leg the Nashes told green to go for help, and then they made the fateful decision to stay at the airstrip and warn the others. Once green took off, he radioed, the incoming mail, plane, pilot and told him not to land at McCarthy. He explained what had happened and ask the mail plane pilot to contact the Alaska state troopers in Glen, Allen, and request their assistance. Hastings. Meanwhile had planned to wait at the headlines home and kill his neighbors one by one as they arrived at the headlines. But once Tim Nash escaped from the house Hastings knew he needed to alter his plan and hunt down Nash before he could warn the others. While tame Tim, and Amy waited in the freezing morning, air Hastings, followed a dog sled trail through the thick brush back to the airstrip. He crawled up a large amount of plowed snow across the one way from the Nashes and fire, ten rounds at the newlyweds who stood two hundred and fifty yards or two hundred and twenty eight point six meters away from him. He then walked to within fifty feet or fifteen point two four meters of their bodies and fired two more shots. And then continued to approach firing two final. Kill shots into their heads. He dragged their bodies to the top of the snow Bank across the runway from where they had died in an attempt to hide them in deeper snow. Soon after Hastings climb the snowbank, two more area. Residents Harley king, and Donna, Byrom arrived at the north end of the airstrip on king snow machine Harley king sixty one and his wife Jo had lived on their homestead fifteen miles west of McCarthy, since nineteen sixty six Joe well known Bush pilot and flight instructor had flown her plane to Anchorage and was waiting for the weather to improve before flying back to McCarthy. So she was not home that fateful day. But her husband had agreed to give Donna Byrom thirty two. A ride the airstrip Byrum, who live between the king's home McCarthy was planning to fly out on the male plane Byrom saw large blotch is a blood on the snow, covered airstrip, and then saw Hastings standing on the snowbank when they drew closer Hastings opened fire on them Bayram was standing on the sled behind the snow machine. And she saw bullets hit the machine and king, one bullet hit Byrom in the upper right arm king. Drove the snow machine as fast as he could toward the south away from Hastings but one of hating shots had broken kings leg. And he soon lost control of the machine the snow machine crashed and through king and Biram onto the runway near the path leading to the Heglig home Byrom tried to load king back onto the sled. That Hastings was quickly approaching quick king told by room. He did not move and he urged her to save herself after a moment's hesitation Byrom fled toward the headlines home as she ran. She heard two shots and new king was dead, which reached the Heglig house. She saw the front door had been kicked in. So she ran to the greenhouse and hid outside as she huddled shivering. She heard Hastings approach calling out come on out, he's not. Dead, yet she held her injured arm and fought to stay quiet certain. She was about to die. She heard Hastings footsteps on the porch and knew he would soon find her. But then abruptly he turned around and sped off on the Nashes. No machine. There were only three Alaska state troopers within one hundred miles in any direction available to respond to the massacre at McCarthy. The troopers new situation was dire and they didn't have time to wait for backup. They commandeered an oil company helicopter, and ordered the pilot to fly to McCarthy Hastings headed west on the McCarthy road, where the troopers from Glenallen easily intercepted him by helicopter, Hastings wave to the helicopter realizing it was not a trooper helicopter. He saw a chance to get a ride to town to make his escape when the troopers exited the helicopter, he quickly told them he was Chris Richards and explain that Lewis Hastings had gone beserk ima shooting up McCarthy, the troopers new Richards was already in Glen Allen, though, and Hastings had identification in his pocket. The troopers arrested Hastings without incident with heating handcuffed and restrained in the helicopter. The troopers continue to. Mccarthy where they found the bodies of Tim Namie Nash and Harley king on the runway. They were all dead from gunshot wounds with final kill shots to each of their heads inside the headlines house. The troopers discovered the bodies of less implode. Hey, glint and their neighbor. Maxine Edwards stacked in the bedroom. A bloody, I covered silencer sat on the nightstand beside the bodies troopers. Fallon, the injured Byrom outside the greenhouse and helped her to the helicopter. She was forced to share the ride to Glenallen with the man who had murdered her neighbors and had tried to kill her. Why did Lewis Hastings go on a murderous rampage and kill his neighbors? The reason is nearly as bizarre as the crimes themselves. Hastings was an intelligent computer programmer, who had worked at Stanford University in the late nineteen seventies, but, like many people who moved to Alaska, he left the overdeveloped area where he lived in California with dreams of starting a new life. In the unspoiled wilderness of Alaska at first, he and his wife settled in Anchorage. And he started a computer service business out of his house, but by nineteen eighty to his business and his marriage were failing, and he began to spend more and more time at his cabinet Kennecott, Alaska's economy was booming in nineteen eighty three due to the construction of the trans Alaska oil pipeline, which carries oil from Prudhoe bay south to the porta Valdez on Prince William Sound. The state was flush with money and in the midst of a construction. Boom Hastings hated the pipeline and the related development. It had created and he felt the state's newfound prosperity would ruin the lifestyle. He had dreamed of when he'd moved to Alaska it became his mission to destroy the pipeline Hastings finally divulged his convoluted scheme to authorities. He had planned to arrive in McCarthy before the. Plane and kill anyone who showed up to meet the Tuesday plane next. He would kill the mail plane pilot and steal the plane, he then planned to fly to a pumps station near the pipeline about eighty miles or one hundred twenty eight point seven kilometers west of McCarthy, then he intended to steal field truck and rammed the pipeline while shooting at it this action, he believed would badly damage the pipeline, but he hoped the oil would congealed in the cold winter temperature and not do too much environmental damage after rupturing the pipeline. He'd then believed the fuel truck would burst into flames and char- his body beyond recognition. He hoped people would think he had been murdered McCarthy with the other residents and his family would never know. He was the murderer who had committed suicide in the end. Troopers learned Hastings, had never before shot ally. Animal so to prepare himself for his rampage. He practice shooting rabbits, he felt if he could shoot a rabbit, he could shoot a human. The weekend before the massacre, Hastings learned his wife was who is living in Anchorage was having an affair the upsetting news might have been enough to push already angry man over the edge Lewis Hastings, brutally massacred six people a March first nineteen eighty three because he believed murdering his neighbors was a necessary. I step and his brilliant plan to preserve the Alaskan wilderness, less than flow, Haglund, Maxine Edwards, Tim naming ash, and Harley king died in the McCarthy massacre, and Chris Richards and Donna Byrom were injured. Lewis Hastings was sentenced to six hundred thirty four years in prison as sad footnote to this tragic story, Chris Richards, a man, the surviving residents McCarthy considered a hero because of his wept action saved more people from being killed during the nineteen Eighty-three massacre died when his Kennecott cab. And burn down one week before Christmas in two thousand and one after his death many who knew Richards said, Hastings had finally claimed his seventh victim Richards, never recovered, physically or mentally from the massacre, and in later years, survivor's guilt, depression and alcoholism plagued him, according to those who knew him at the time of his death. He was trying to give up alcohol and was suffering from hallucinations. The McCarthy Kennecott area is now a popular tourist destination. But, like most remote areas in Alaska, the crowds leaving September and only a few hardy individuals choose to live in such a desolate wilderness in the winter most of these people's cherish their solitude, but they often must depend on each other to survive, the one cold winter for the folks of the McCarthy area. It was not easy for them to trust their neighbors. Again after the horrible. Tuesday in March nineteen eighty three and mail day has never been the same sense..

"Of Kodiak island, Alaska this murder and mystery in the last frontier, with your host, Robin bear 'field in a land full of peril and vicious animals. Humans are the most dangerous predators of all. Welcome to murder mystery in the last frontier. I'm your host Robin bear field. And I live and work in the middle of the Kodiak, national wildlife refuge on Kodiak island in Alaska, Alaska, is land of mystery danger stunning, beauty and valuable resources over the decades fortune seekers have been drawn to Alaska in search of gold oil, this and crab. These fortune seekers are usually young men with little to lose and big dreams of becoming rich throughout Alaska's history away of crime as follow each economic boom. And in my podcast, I will tell you, these stories of crime, while share a little about the rich cultural history geography of this complex state. I call home since authorities began keeping records in nineteen eighty eight sixty thousand seven hundred people have been reported missing in Alaska. That's fine. Five people reported missing every year per one thousand residents each year, an average of two thousand two hundred and fifty people disappear in Alaska twice the national average. Some of these people are found alive and well and the remains of others are eventually discovered but many disappear without a trace most of Alaska is a vast untamed wilderness. And it draws adventures from around the world to climb the steep mountains kayak the raging rivers or simply experienced nature in his Ross form. Alaska, also, attracts dropouts, those running from the law or the responsibilities of their lives and young people trying to quote, find themselves or wishing to experience wilderness lifestyle reality rarely matches the fantasy. There's a reason. So few people live in the rugged wilderness of Alaska. Alaska is a place of extremes. The state is defined by bitterly, cold temperatures raging rivers. Harsh storms treacherous mountains, and wild predators at the top of the food chain. People who've lived a lifetime in the wilderness, respect the dangers, and no, not to take them lightly. Still sometimes even those knowledgeable about the wilderness ends perils disappear. I hope you will join me on my podcast to listen to stories of murder and mystery from the last frontier. And I wanna get started today with my first story, the McCarthy massacre of nineteen eighty three. Most Alaskans are adventurous and self sufficient individuals who can survive on their own, but are willing to lend a helping hand to others a few people, though, come to Alaska escape their problems, or to hide from the law, usually, they bring their problems with them, as I mentioned, I live in the wilderness on Kodiak island, in Alaska, where my husband and I own a remote lodge and the story, I am about to tell you reflects my worst nightmare. I live in the midst of the world's most concentrated population of huge Brown bears, but bears are not with scare me most, there are no roads or cars where I live, and no other human habitations within miles on my home. So the most frightening thing I can imagine would be to look out a window on a stormy winter night and catch the glimpse of a human shadow running across the walk a few times, hunters camping in the area, and in need of our help have knocked on our door late. Night, and while we were happy to assist them. I realized there was no one we could call for help if the visitors threatened us. The Alaska state troopers are the responsible on forcement agents outside the Kodiak city limits, but they're based in the town of Kodiak, seventy air miles from my home, and they can only respond during daylight hours because it isn't safe to fly over this mountainous island at night, we're on our own, if some psychopath, forces his way into our lives. Like the folks in the story, I'm about to tell you a plane carrying our mail supplies and groceries, stops at our dock once a week and eerily enough, our mail plane like the plane, that serviced the doomed residents McCarthy is also on Tuesday since the plane lands, and pulls up to our dock where sometimes the only people here to meet it, but anyone can get supplies mail or pay for a seat fair on this plane occasionally people, we've never met show up for the plane to wait for supplies or passengers. And we invite these strangers into our home for coffee and cookies. While they wait for the plane. Usually, these folks are nice and appreciate our hospitality. But once in a while someone makes me uncomfortable. And I breathe a sigh of relief when I see him speed away from our doc in his boat heading back towards campsite. We know nothing about these strangers, but we assume and hope they mean us. No harm. The folks McCarthy, Alaska, probably also felt safe around the neighbors and strangers who showed up to wait for their mail plane. The people who lived in the wilderness near McCarthy were bound together by the chosen lifestyle. They enjoyed their solitary lives but each week. They looked forward to gathering with their neighbors and socializing for an hour to while they waited for the mail plane to arrive everything changed on that. Fateful, day in nineteen eighty three male day would never be the same again. In nineteen eighty three lesson flow, Hagans home, in McCarthy Alaska was a gathering spot where the twenty two residents of the Kennecott McCarthy area waited for them weekly mail plane, the Heglig lived near the small airstrip where the plane landed and not only did they offer their hospitality, but even built an addition onto the front porch where they would leave uncollected mail and grocery, so nearby residents could drop by at their convenience to pick up their freight, the Hagans own the only two way radio in the area strong enough to communicate with outside world, and they relayed daily weather reports to the Federal Aviation Administration office in Cordova, the Hague house was more than just a place for the residents to sit and wait for the plane to arrive, except for the male plane pilot, the Hagans were McCarthy residents loan linked to civilization Tuesday, March first nineteen Eighty-three was male. Day. Mccarthy and Kennecott are located four miles from each other in the middle of the wrangle, Saint Elias, national park and preserve approximately one hundred twenty miles or one hundred ninety three kilometers northeast of Cordova, and two hundred and thirty miles or three hundred seventy kilometers east of Anchorage Rangel, Saint Elias encompasses area, about the size of West Virginia with four mountain ranges, converging in the park, the temperature fluctuates from fifty degrees below zero Fahrenheit, or minus, forty five point five degrees celsius in the winter to ninety degrees Fahrenheit or thirty two point two degrees celsius in the summer, the annual snowfall averages fifty two inches or one hundred and thirty two centimeters around the turn of the twentieth century, the richest concentration of copper, ever mined was discovered in the mountains above Kennecott, the town of Kennecott was developed as a place for the miners to work and live while. Mccarthy was developed as a place for the miners to play by the nineteen thirties. Most of the ore was gone, and Kennecott and McCarthy became ghost towns, the railroad track that was used to transport the ore soon fell into disrepair and became the McCarthy road, this road begins where the pavement ends and Chitra, sixty one miles or ninety eight point to claw Matrese to the west. And by nineteen eighty three the road was nearly impassable residents of the area were mostly stranded during the long winter of nineteen eighty three and they were dependent upon look forward to their Tuesday, mail play in nineteen Eighty-three McCarthy had no running water no telephones and no electricity, except for the power provided by individual generators, the independent souls, who called this remote area home had little contact with the outside world. So the weekly gathering to wait for the mail. Plane was a way to share news on February twen-. Ninety eight the night before mail day in Kennecott, four miles north of the McCarthy airstrip twenty nine year old Chris Richards played chess with his neighbor. Thirty nine year old Louis Hastings Hastings, and unemployed, computer programmer had moved to Alaska from California in nineteen eighty and had only lived in the kennicutt area for year according to Richard the evening was unremarkable. Just a friendly game between two neighbors. The following morning as Richard's cooked breakfast Hastings, again, appeared at his front door. Richard assumed Hastings was on his way to meet the mail plane. And he pushed open the door and invited Hastings in for tea riches, then turned his back to the door while he continued cooking his meal, a moment later Richards, felt something strike his right cheek shattering his glasses. He immediately ducked and the Velten object hit his head, he turned toward Hastings and saw the other man walking toward him the barrel of a pistol that. With a silencer protruding from his gloved hand ready to fire again Richards grabbed Hastings, and they began to struggle, while Richard screamed at Hastings to stop shooting Hastings, said, look, you're already dead. If you'll just quit fighting on make it easy for you Richards fumbled for a knife from the sink and stabbed Hastings in the left upper chest and the right leg Richards. Then fled the cabin into waist. Deep snow wearing only socks one slipper a t shirt, and light quarter, ROY pants, the temperature in Kennecott that morning was ten degrees, Fahrenheit, or minus seventeen point two degrees celsius, Hastings pistol jammed, and he grabbed the rifle he had stashed outside the cabin door while Hastings fired shots at him Richards fought his way three quarters of a mile or one point two kilometers up a steep hill to an unoccupied tourist lodge, where he found boots a parka and snow. Oh shoo Richard continued out the door of the lodge, but Hastings who had been following Richard's, bloody footprints thought Richards was still in the lodge. So he set the lodge on fire Richards, couldn't manage the snow shoes. So he staggered and then crawled one tenth of a mile or one hundred sixty one meters to the southwest to the cabin of Tim and Amy Nash, the Nashes were young couple who had just gotten married on Christmas day. And after a long honeymoon, they had only returned in the Kennecott area two weeks earlier Tim, and Amy bandage Richards wounds while he told them what had happened since Hastings appeared to be on his way to McCarthy where area residents would soon be gathering to meet the male plane Richards and the Nashes decided to arm themselves and head to the runway into the Heglig home to warn the others about Hastings. Meanwhile, fifty two year old Maxine Edwards left her husband at home while she crossed the froze. Kennecott river and proceeded to the Hegley house to await them. Plitt mail plane flow. It was the Hegley who sent and received these communications on their side band radio. The Hegley and their home were central to the loosely..
