"Lowering the areas of our vulnerability to China. So treasury secretary Janet Yellen made a speech late last week that made that point. We're actually, if you get past the rhetoric and some of the worries, I think we in Europe are pretty close on China. And this is essential. If we're going to deal with the challenge that China represents, we've got to work with Europe. We've got to work with the G 7 and if we do have a common position, we've got the edge. We just have to remember that. Well, and of course, that is kind of a longer term story that the U.S. has to navigate the world with China in it, whether or not that is a decoupled world, if you will, or less globalized one in the longer term, I guess, remains to be seen in the nearer term, though, and specifically with the role of China, and how it plays into the ongoing war in Ukraine. I understand that just earlier today, you were having lunch with the mayor of Kyiv, vitali Klitschko. What is the tone of those conversations? Is it seen that in order for Ukraine to win this war, China is going to have to play some kind of role? Well, mayor Klitschko had two messages. One was the Ukrainian people are determined to defend themselves and their country and they will succeed and the other message was after the war Ukrainians are going to build a democratic rule of law country or strengthen their democracy. In a way that is commensurate with the sacrifice of the Ukrainian people, those are my words, not his, but that was his message. It was an inspiring one. With respect to China, they are not playing a terribly helpful role. They're not all in on the side of the Russians. They are reserved, but there are certainly not acting as a force to settle the war on anything like acceptable terms to anybody. It would be great if they were, but they should have no signs of doing so. So that's unfortunate but successful successful support for Ukraine and Ukraine's victory in this war that is, if they manage to defend themselves from the Russian invasion, may cause the Chinese to reassess whatever assumptions they may have had about an easy military conquest of Taiwan. The west's response to Russians invasion of Ukraine was stronger than the Kremlin expected more sustained in the Kremlin expected it was not weak. We didn't dither, we didn't ring our hands. We actually backed Ukraine with weapons and economic support. We, the U.S. and the European, our European friends and allies. That shows that the west and the democratic world, the free world as we used to say, is not as weak as China may suppose. That is an important message. So helping the Ukrainians succeed is important for peace in Europe. It's important also for stability in Asia. Ambassador at your lunch with mayor Klitschko. Did he bring up fighter jets? You and I have been talking about this request for the better part of a year and they don't have them yet. Well, he was, he was thanking. He was grateful to the United States. For all of the help to Ukraine, he was not complaining. He was not whining. He said, send weapons, but he wasn't. He wasn't there with a shopping list. He had broader messages of Ukraine's determination, the resilience of the people of keys, the ones who elected him and the need to build strength and Ukraine's democracy as in the war is over. Well, on the subject of the war is over, there is a question of when that will happen. The prime minister of Poland where you served as ambassador to earlier today was saying that Russia and its public opinion are patient. It could withstand various election and democratic cycles that is a huge risk. We are facing today. What time horizon realistically are we talking about ambassador? Well, the polls have a track record of being right about Russia. So I would take what their leaders say seriously. Much depends on the battlefield. And it is possible that the Ukrainian military will succeed at least partly in its counter offensive that many people expect to take place later this spring in the summer. And if so, if it succeeds, they may be in a better position and the Russians may even though they don't seem serious about negotiations now. They may have to consider them, especially if the Ukrainians do well. Now, that's not guaranteed. We don't know. The battle field is that it can be tricky place. Anything can happen. So I suspect we will have greater clarity about the course of the war later this year. The Russians

sector that don't exhibit those quality characteristics They don't have the cash on the balance sheet We're a little bit more concerned about that We're more overweight and traditional technology names Again that are going to give us those great balance sheets and those organic growth drivers You've got to have a great solid position in your industry to compete again as that macro tide comes away Is Amazon no longer a growth stock Well you think about sort of what is the impetus right You look at the year over year comps I think that's the biggest challenge for Amazon now coming out of the pandemic I mean we had two years of extraordinary demand for that business model and now we need to see you know what are those organic growth drivers going forward And I think that's going to be a challenge How many rounded of John Hancock Emily great to catch up What an earnings season It's been Lisa Just the numbers themselves have been pretty decent pretty solid but it's all about that outlook And I think as we round out earnings season for the big tech names that's exactly where we started the quarter What's going to happen in the future What's the outlook where's the guidance And that's where we're finishing it with the same concerns The fact that the NASDAQ was already down nearly 20% heading into the big tech week It shows you how much pessimism was already baked in And then to see the further declines in the shares after the earnings speaks to that pessimism and that uncertainty baked into the outlook I think the bifurcation within big tech might be the story from this earnings season We've got to set up the conversation for the next few hours On that bifurcation I'm going to catch you with Dan Ives of Wedbush a little bit later Lisa that is exactly his ankle right now But for our next conversation with ECB chief economist Philip lane Tom inflation at 7.5% I have to say in the track a year did you ever think we'd get back to 7.5% on CPI in Europe And most importantly John professor lane never did I really want to emphasize for an American audience This is one of the Giants of modern economics This is must listen must watch for global Wall Street Now core CPI in Europe is much lower than core CPI in the United States but this will be uncomfortable for the ECB because it's moving in the wrong direction still So core CPI comes up to 3.5 from 2.9 and the estimate was 3.2 And what we're really interested now in the ECB is the sequencing Winding down QE and the then what How much space between that which could end in July and then that first thing that we haven't seen Tom since 2011 a rate hike from the ECB Okay that's the process and John your expert at that whether you're years in Frankfurt I'm just looking at the core theory which is it's a more sluggish tepid run rate a more sluggish nominal GDP and that top line inflation there is absolutely unacceptable given compared to the United States I should say I think the way we frame it Lisa is a rock and a hard place That's good Central Bank officials in Europe at the moment You've characterized it as the emerging markets alumni at the European Union is experiencing that How do you hike into a weakening economy I was looking at some of the components of the inflation print that came out of Europe this morning 38% increase in oil and gas This is an energy fueled kind of inflation and that is the worst kind because what that means is that crimps the consumer And that is the dilemma that this ECB is facing The ECB chief economist Philip lane is going to be joining us in just about 5 thousands It's horrible It's actually very depressive images to see that It's not secret the key was always target from Russians and they right now to go away I actually don't believe Russians The Russians told this special operation just against Ukrainian army I just came in right now from now to the city I saw the whole people shoot Civilian City and old young people women's should buy Russian soldiers and take bodies everywhere there Mayor Klitschko you were give is ordinarily a city of about 3 million people the size of Chicago in fact Can you tell how many people have left What's life in the city like now Kyiv is the largest city in east Europe right now We guess the help of population right now already last It's women's children's will move to west of Ukraine much more safety part of the country And some people temporary move to outside of the country Cities change totally It's always a springtime This city have an energy so many people enjoy this spring sunshine And right now the just blog post the people with weapons It's city almost died Yeah Do you want people to return or is it still unsafe What do you think about the future To be honest I talked to many experts in the world and nobody can predict how situation will be developed Everybody hope of for diplomatic solution but Russians told about solution about compromise is difficult to say which compromise we have to find in this incrementation we can talk about compromise our solution if Russian soldiers go away from our territory from our country Right now the people want to come back to Kyiv but it's still the edges to be in Kyiv because any seconds any buildings any citizens of our cities can be targeted That way right now we can say when a survey was finished Right now a little bit quite damp couple of days before but people still near us What is the city need from the rest of the world What would you like I explain you some very interesting story Just a couple of weeks ago the records launched in apartments building The building destroyed by immediately come to this place with four men to give the help the people one man come to me I guess a little bit more than 60 years old and give the question mister mayor what I have to do I'm homeless right now because this huge hole in the building and I give him proposals to wait him to the west of Ukraine I was very surprised The answer was mister mayor All my life I leave him my hometown in Kyiv All my friends who relatives live here I don't want to leave I want to ask you mister mayor Please Give me the weapons I want to important for us We are ready to fight But please everyone have to understand we defend not just our country we defend not just our families We defend the same values and principles and if someone think the war far away is wrong opinion because this work can touch anyone in routine of anyone in the world Thank you for everyone Mayor vitalik did you go with Kyiv Thank you sir The Biden administration is going to end the sweeping border restrictions known as title 42 For more than two years those restrictions allowed immigration authorities to quickly expel migrants at the border without giving them a chance to seek asylum in the U.S. policy was originally intended to stop the spread of COVID-19 The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has announced that the Trump era policy will end on May 23rd but there are concerns lifting those restrictions could lead to a record influx of migrants at the southern border And Virgil rose covers emigration Joel thanks so much for being with us Hi Scott First what do CDC officials say about their decision Well basically that these restrictions are no longer necessary CDC director Rochelle Walensky wrote that the threat of migrants spreading COVID-19 at the border has quote ceased to be a serious danger to the public health That was the CDC's reason for authorizing these pandemic restrictions more than two years ago The Biden administration has made some exceptions notably for unaccompanied children arriving at the border but it's largely kept title 42 in place until now I'd watch the reaction been so far Immigrant advocates in many Democrats welcomed this decision They have been arguing for a long time that title 42 was really a tool to manage the flow of migrants at the border and limit access to a silent using public health and COVID essentially as an excuse Melissa Crowe is a lawyer at the center for gender and refugee studies at UC Hastings college of the law We commend the Biden administration for getting rid of this racist Trump era relic There's absolutely no legal or policy justification for turning back asylum seekers at the border or for leaving them stranded in some of the most dangerous cities in the world Immigrant advocates also argue that title 42 wasn't actually very effective at managing migration We've seen record breaking numbers of migrant apprehensions at the southern border last year even with title 42 in place So what happens now is that the restrictions are lifted There's a lot of concern that this will lead to a significant increase in migration Republicans are using words like chaos and travesty and Armageddon Here's senator rob Portman Republican of Ohio speaking on the Senate floor this week The border patrol tells me they are already overwhelmed But they say it will be out of control Now someone argue it's already out of control but it's going to get a whole lot worse And even some Democrats are nervous I mean particularly senators who are facing tight reelection contests this year they say that the Biden administration should keep title 42 in place at least until it has a better plan ready to deal with the possible influx How does the Biden administration react to that Homeland Security officials say they will be ready when title 42 ends in just over 7 weeks They say they have a plan They're deploying extra personnel to the border They're standing up temporary facilities to process migrants They are at the same time preparing to roll out a new system for handling asylum claims that is supposed to take months instead of years and Homeland Security officials also say they may place greater numbers of migrants into the so called remain in Mexico program This is another Trump era policy that forces asylum seekers to wait outside of the U.S. for their hearings in immigration courts You know but in the short run there's no question that Biden administration is in a tough spot here Immigrant advocates and liberal Democrats note that the U.S. has a legal obligation to let migrants apply for asylum and there is also no doubt that Republicans will try to blame Biden and Democrats for any increase in migration as we head toward midterm elections And pierce Joel rose thanks so much You're welcome.

"I am very concerned that all these higher prices are going to lead different spending choices and for people to pull back I am very impressed and quite honestly surprised at how resilient equities have been we still have to focus on what the central banks are going to do I'm more focused on the overall level of rates and most importantly the shape of the curve This is certainly shaping up as a very different economic cycle from anything that we've seen in the recent past This is Bloomberg surveillance with Tom Keene Jonathan farrow and Lisa Abraham always Good morning everyone Jonathan farrow Lisa ramundo Sam keen on radio on television and important point in the war in Ukraine We blow up the show now this 8 o'clock hour in New York in New York John farrow the headline speak and the markets react in the headlines speak for themselves Tom and I have to say we've repeated this a couple of times now for the first time following talks between Ukraine and Russia this time in turkey a constructive tone from both sides Ukraine coming straight out of the gate and suggesting there is ground for a meeting between the two leaders Vladimir Putin and president zelensky Russia come again and pledging to sharply cut military operations in and around Ukraine's capital cave Tom There's some good news some good news for this disaster that's unfolded before all of our eyes on the Ukrainian people over the last month Let's be quick here in radio and television or conversations forward here in the sour are two important John ruble in ten big figures says all At a full handle on dollar ruble a move on equities Tom futures up about half of 1% We saw a two year yield in Germany through zero positive territory for the first time since 2014 Crude is interesting Let's sit on crew just for a moment Tom And try and go through things calmly We had a gap lower on Brent crude And then we snapped back just a little bit And I think we've got to frame this appropriately This is good news for the war effort for the Ukrainians on the ground in Ukraine From a market's perspective this removes the risk of an escalation in sanctions What I don't think it does Tom is take any of those sanctions away anytime soon And I think what it does do is stop things from getting worse but not necessarily help things get better in the energy market Lucy you've got to believe that mister Biden will have to speak off of this news this morning We're all hoping that this actually is solid but it really does go to the question that John was saying how quickly does Russia get brought back into the international sphere or just frankly remain a pariah state at a time when still there is a huge dependency on the commodities In other words do we still maintain the supply chain disruptions to food disruptions The oil sanctions that are causing the inflationary inputs all rise at a substantial pace For global Wall Street we will speak with the oil minister of the United Arab Emirates at this historic point but first John Maria today Joins us right now some out of Europe at Maria Let's start here The headlines out of Ukraine out of Russia Would you also agree that for the first time they're actually quite aligned to constructive view Well I would say there's two things You're very right to say that for the first time we see that the Ukrainian delegation and the Russian delegation walk away with the same conclusions Remember every time it was a very different picture or the two sides would be very far apart in terms of the conclusions this time it does seem that they attended the same meeting and they agreed in a number of issues The thing that really caught my eye is Russia singing we are open to this meeting between a lot of mid zelensky the Ukrainian prime minister and of course Vladimir Putin Remember for a very long time the idea was the Russia did not or would not want to sit down with zelensky because Russia believed that he was an actor that he was a clown that he carried no wait here and that Russia would only speak to the big powers of the world so that is now changing When it comes to the Russian singing we're going to cut back some of the deployments around the capitol the reality is Jonathan They're doing this because they're not able to take the capital It's been there for three weeks We all remember the pictures of that convoy into the capital city of Ukraine they've not been able to take it so there has been an idea for days now that this was an operation that had already failed for Russia perhaps a lot of this is trying to save face for the fact that Ukraine has really solidified its control of the Ukrainian capital Maria the whole way over the last 6 weeks two months It's been incredibly difficult to trust the Russian side They told us they weren't planning to invade They invaded They told us they weren't building up troops They were going to send them back They built them up even more When they say they're going to sharply cut military operations near Kyiv Have we got any detail of what that actually means and how we'll verify that in the coming days Well we're going to have to verify that in fact we're doing this and you're very right to point out the repeatedly Russia has flat out light especially when they talked about the invasion but also the use of Belarus We're not going to use it and the invasion They're doing that They also talked about we're not going to target civilians They clearly have so a lot of this has to be verified and we're probably going to have to wait for the authorities in the capital of Ukraine's particularly from mayor Klitschko to say whether or not they're seeing this But to me what is key here is the Russians saying we agree we need to pull back some of the deployments in order to have mutual trust in the talk So that is a good thing The other thing I would point to is we've seen many different talks happening here but this one felt differently because Erdoğan was there He chaired the meeting He was a master of ceremony He is employing his political capital the Russians and Ukrainians appeared to think turkey is a right mediator and he said this week we need something on paper Maria how willing are western leaders to reward this outreach by Vladimir Putin If it sticks in terms of him withdrawing troops and actually easing some of the sanctions versus continuing to penalize what a lot of people view as completely unjust and frankly a humanitarian disaster in Ukraine caused by the invasion I mean it's a disaster when you look at my RuPaul This is this is incredible It's 80% of a city that's been destroyed Humanitarian corridors that don't work And the Ukrainians insisting and we have to insist that they believe war crimes have been committed in Ukraine but you make a very good point The first things are Russians will say is that we show you goodwill so therefore you have to lift the sanctions And this is going to create a huge political fight in the European Union because we know there are some countries that would be inclined to do that as a show of goodwill too and there are some particularly in Eastern Europe that I know have already told me we should not do this We don't learn from history until the Russians pull back completely We should not lift any of the sanctions on the country Maria thank you Maria today Just to put it all together and run through the price section Got a big moving dollar ruble about 11 percentage points Of course Russian assets will do well off this But who trades them Not many people right now That's for sure If you look at equity futures we've got to do some pop up 6 tenths of 1% in Europe That's where we see a massive move on the equity benchmark in Frankfurt Germany the tax cut by 2.8% the cac 40 at three percentage points already having a decent day What it does unlock Tom I think from here if you can tell me this does not get worse If you can convince me that that's the case for the rest of this year then it's an opening for the ECB And that speaks to the move we're seeing at the front end of Germany and for that matter Tom.
