"Well, you kinda do there's a little issue going on as far as the election is concerned in Florida. I know it is November ninth two thousand eighteen I know it's kind of an evergreen headline now election problems in Florida. But there there are issues because votes keep showing up, and you've got people finding provisional ballots where they shouldn't be trucks are driving in and saying, oh, yeah. We got some in the back. Go ahead and offload those and this race the more ballots that show up the closer against between two elections. But the between well with Rick Scott, for example, he starts to. His victory starts to win a little bit more with every vote. That's counted. Correct. And it's a little suspicious to some people that suddenly all these democratic ballots are showing up from the other side. They're saying, hey, they were hidden on purpose. Right. The fraud. Right. So Donald Trump went on a little bit of a tweet storm today saying Rick Scott was up by fifty thousand plus votes on election day now they quote unquote, found many votes, and he's only up fifteen thousand the Broward effect. He's ad in Broward County, how come they never find Republican votes, and he says mayor Gillam conceded on election day, and now Broward County has put him back in play Bill Nelson conceited election now he's back in play. This is an embarrassment to our country, enter democracy. In the two thousand sixteen election is winning by so much in Florida that Broward County which was very late with vote tabulation and probably getting ready to do a number. Couldn't do it because not enough people live in Broward for them to falsify a victory. And so there is some funny business going on there. I mean, there's a Dan Crowley from NBC six in south, Florida. There is a public canvassing board meeting in Broward and the media's not being allowed to go cover. It. And you wonder okay, you have all these ballots just showing up you got arm via police officers keeping the media out of covering. This story Broward is the real meth lab of democracy. Hashtag,.

"Is a special weather statement, I'm Greg Schaffer in the weather center. The national weather service in Peachtree has issued a tornado warning for northwestern Kutuzov county northwestern Walker County and Dade County until one forty five pm at one zero six a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near flat rock that's about nine miles south west of Trenton moving to the northeast at thirty miles an hour. There is an unconfirmed report of a tornado near eyder. Once again, the national weather service in Peachtree city has issued a tornado warning for northwestern Kutuzov county northwestern Walker and Dade County in Georgia until one forty five pm country was divided during Obama because the Republicans dared not criticize him for fear being called racist. And I think that's why the Democrats put up so many candidates like this is to cow Republicans and Republican opponents like you in the toning down criticism. So that you don't face the charge me you seem. Undeterred you seem willing to take this guy on so. Yeah, you know, he got mad at me for calling him Andrew in the debates. And I was like, okay. He's like I I have a title. And so I said well one he didn't serve honorably as mayor because he's accepted illegal payments from undercover FBI agents lobbyists and then done favors for them. And that's why he's under investigation. But I said, okay, if you wanna proper title, I'll do it. But I gotta be honest. So I'm willing to call you failed mayor Gillam because Tallahassee had the highest number of murders in its history. Last year. I'm willing to call you radical mayor Gillam because you're aligned with all these left wing anti police groups, and I'm willing to call you crooked mayor Gillam because you did accept the illegal gifts from undercover FBI agent lobbyists than you did favors for him. So if you wanna play that game, we're happy to do it. So I've been very tough. And I've been you know, really just telling the truth, which is I think what the voters deserve. But you cannot pull punches you've gotta go all out because you know, the left certainly they'll do whatever they can to destroy me. So you have to fight back. Absolutely. Amen. So the guy took some tickets to Hamilton from an undercover FBI agent. Isn't it? Yeah. So this guy was posing as a developer looking for some zoning changes for the city of Tallahassee. So he gave Andrew probably two of these tickets worth at least a thousand dollars a piece that trip was arranged by a lobbyist who took Andrew to Costa Rica and paid a thousand dollars for him to stay four nights in a luxury villa which is bad. I mean, those are illegal gifts you're not allowed to do it, violates Florida law. But then what happened was the same lobbyists that set up the New York trip and did the paid for the Costa Rica vacation wanted to million dollars from the city of Tallahassee to build a restaurant. And guess what? After Andrew got his he turned around and gave the lobbyists to two million dollars the undercover agent who wanted to change the by. Golly, they got the zoning change. So it's basically textbook. Municipal clips. Shedding literally arranged for did you say two million dollars? Yeah. So that the same lobbyist who paid for him to go to Costa Rica, which was illegal and arranged for the. Hamilton stuff, you million dollar if you act with the city of Tallahassee to build a restaurant if you had been caught doing this. They'd be talking about impeaching you. Oh, I mean, it would be front page of every newspaper every single day. And here's the thing. He will. He has the gall to say neither me nor my city of Tallahassee has ever been under investigation. And just think about it. What other reason what an undercover FBI agent have to Greece's palms unless the agent was investigating him. I mean, he's just lying through his teeth about that. And it's also come out since the initial documents that that same undercover agent under road, a forty three hundred dollar political dinner for Andrew when he was getting ready to run for governor. So just from the undercover agent about fifty three hundred dollars at least in illegal gifts or campaign contributions. So this is about much more than a couple of tickets the Hamilton. Oh, yeah. It's about it's about buying influence, and and and what Andrew did in response. And he did take actions that benefited these people. Well, it's it's got to be frustrating. You're up against somebody who's being investigated. By the FBI. And this is you have to be the one to call attention to this. It's it's much like the president's getting ninety percent negative media coverage has he says the only thing he can do is fight to fight back as rip into it. Because he's got nobody else helping him. You find yourself in somewhat similar situation. Of course. I mean, plus add to the fact that since the president is backing me that means the national media in particular, they want nothing better than for me to lose anybody that they can any law that they can hang around Trump. That's what they're doing. So they're actively trying to help Andrew gillum. They're actively trying to hurt me spread a lot of fake news tried to smear me and a bunch of different ways. I mean, I think voters understand. It's all garbage. They understand how this works. But nevertheless, that is what they are doing. And so, but here's the thing. Rush people. They get it. Our voters are turning out. Obviously any your listeners in Florida who haven't turned out we need you to. Come turn out. You can also go to Ron desanta dot com and help us out any way you can. But that is really what it is. You have this media complex the democrat media complex. They are out of touch with American taxpayers and American people who are actually out there working hard. So we can have our voice heard on Tuesday. I have no doubt about that. And you know, what if we gained Senate seats, I win the governorship and we hold onto the house. Can you imagine the meltdown that's going to happen with the media and with the Democrats on Wednesday morning? It's going to be more than a meltdown a caravan will turn around and have the other way, it'll it'll be it's it could get really dangerous. I mean, they'd be the fit of depression and frustration Barbra Streisand moving the candidate could be banned. Governor sorry, Mr. de Santa's really that is a slip of the tongue. I'm glad that you gave us this half hour. We're out of time now, but it's been it's been great having you here and all the best to you a lot of people. I think today learned a lot they didn't know. Know about you and and your opponent and what's at stake here in the race. As it relates to the Florida economy. That's Ron Santa's Republican candidate for governor Florida will be right back. Of course. I mean, plus add to the fact that since the president is backing me that means the national media in particular, they want nothing better than for me to lose anybody that they can any loss that they can hang around Trump. That's what they're doing. So they're actively trying to help Andrew gillum. They're actively trying to hurt me. They've spent a lot of fake news tried to smear me and a bunch of different ways. You can also go to Ron fantasy dot com and help us out any way you can. But that is really what it is. You have this media complex the democrat media complex. They are out of touch with American taxpayers and American people who are actually out there working hard. So we can have our voice heard on Tuesday. I have no doubt about that. And you know, what if we gain Senate seats, I win the governorship and we hold onto the house. Can you imagine the meltdown that's going to happen with a media and what the Democrats on Wednesday morning? It's going to be more than a mountain. Alec caravan will turn around and have the other way, it'll it'll be it's it can get really dangerous. I mean, they'd be the fit of depression and frustration Barbra Streisand moving the candidate can be banned. Governor sorry, Mr. de Santa's really that is a slip of the tongue. I'm glad that you gave us this half hour. We're out of time now, but it's been it's been great having you here and all the best to you. A lot of people. "And we are back with Rhonda Santa seeking the governorship of Florida for the Republican party polling data. You're you're you're eater. Neck and neck down a point. Rick Scott's down a couple of points in in in some of the probably best polling. You guys. Are Baltimore Scott has done such a great job as governor. And and it his opponent is is tired and worn out and has going for him is the Devi's name your opponent Gillam. This guy. He's another one of these guys. It seems Mr. de Santa's who simply cannot be honest about his real agenda intentions because if he were he wouldn't have anywhere near the support that he does. And I'm sure you've seen the Project Veritas revelations here with the secret videos of Guillem staff where they're saying. No, no, no, that's not for voters to know. We can't talk about that right now that they're having suppressed so much of what he really believes in what? What what what would happen to the state? If this guy got elected what your fear? Well, this guy is more radical than moonbeam Brown and California more liberal than Cuomo in New York. I mean, he would be the most left wing governor in the country. He is a true believer easily lifetime politician never done anything outside of government his trained at this left wing institute out in Oakland with people like van Jones, and Linda Sarsour. He's funded by George Soros, millions of dollars millions of dollars from Tom star. And he basically is in their pocket, and he would try to turn Florida into a Petri dish for for far left activism, and it would be really really detrimental to the state, and it would be way out of character for our state to ever embrace someone running on such a left wing agenda. Do they do they know the voters know-how left wing Gillam? They're starting to. I mean, you know, we they didn't know how nobody knew how left-wing Obama was they hit that they mask that. Really? Well, and it looks like they're getting away with doing the same thing with this guy. Well, he his unfavorable have gone up significantly. We were able to hold them accountable needs debates, and so he's got a significant number of people who who strongly disapprove of him now, which is good, and that's the direction we needed to go. But the media certainly isn't gonna help us with any of this. I mean, basically tried to puff him up. They try to mute any criticism any assoc- radical pledges. You know, he signed this pledge with this radical group called the dream defenders, basically saying that the police in prison should be abolished, and that the money should be moved to welfare programs, and if your listeners wanna see this agenda that he signed onto Google dream defenders, freedom papers and just read it. It's about twenty five pages as radical as you can be the economic policy wants to get rid of capital. Elizabeth and replace it with socialist principles. So radical would make nNcholas Maduro blush. And yet you don't see exposes on that from the print media here in Florida or the national media. So that's just we know that that's how it's going to be. And so we've done our best to expose them. And I think people have finally gotten the message, I hope so, you know, during the Obama years, and I was just talking about this. The Republicans are basically cowed into silence and apparent acquiescence? You know, young people. They didn't think the country was divided during the Obama because the Republicans dared not criticize him for fear being called racist. And I think that's why the Democrats put up so many candidates like this is to cow Republicans and Republican opponents like you in the toning down criticism. So that you don't face the charge me, you seem undeterred you seem willing to take this guy on so. Yeah, you know, he got mad at me for calling him Andrew in the debates, and I was like, okay. He's like, I I I have a title. And so I said well one he didn't serve honorably as mayor because he's accepted illegal payments from undercut. Cover FBI agents lobbyists and then done favors for them. And that's why he's under investigation. But I said, okay, if you wanna proper title, I'll do it. But I gotta be honest. So I'm willing to call you failed mayor Gillam because Tallahassee had the highest number of murders in its history. Last year. I'm willing to call you radical mayor Gillam because you're aligned with all these left wing anti police groups, and I'm willing to call you a crooked mayor Gil because you did accept legal gifts from undercover FBI agent lobbyists than you did favors for him. So if you wanna play that game, we're happy to do it. So I've been very tough. And I've been you know, really just telling the truth, which is I think what the voters deserve. But you cannot pull punches you've gotta go all out because you know, the last certainly they'll do whatever they can to destroy me. So you have to fight back. Absolutely. Amen. What? So the guy took some tickets to Hamilton from an undercover FBI agent is it. Yeah. So this guy was posing as a developer looking for some. Zoning changes for the city of Tallahassee. So he gave Andrew probably two of these tickets worth at least thousand dollars a piece that trip was arranged by a lobbyist who took Andrew to Costa Rica and paid a thousand dollars for him to stay four nights in a luxury villa which is bad. I mean, those are illegal gifts you're not allowed to do it, violates Florida law. But then what happened was the same lobbyists that set up the New York trip and did the paid for the Costa Rica vacation wanted to million dollars from the city of Tel ASI to build a restaurant. And guess what? After Andrew got his he turned around and gave the lobbyists to two million dollars, the undercover agent who wanted to zoning change they by. Golly, they got the zoning change. So it's basically textbook municipal collect. Shedding literally arranged for did you say two million dollars? Yeah. So the the same lobbyists who paid for him to go to Costa Rica, which was illegal and arrange for the Hamilton stuff million dollar. If you act with the city of Tallahassee to build a restaurant if you had been caught doing this. They'd be talking about impeaching you. Oh, I mean, it would be front page of every newspaper every single day. And here's the thing. He will. He has the gall to say neither me nor my city of Tallahassee has ever been under investigation. And just think about it. What other reason what an undercover FBI agent half degrees palms unless the agent was investigating him. I mean, he's just lying through his teeth about that. And it's also come out since the initial documents that that same undercover agent under road, a forty three hundred dollar political dinner for Andrew when he was getting ready to run for governor. So just from the undercover agent about fifty three hundred dollars at least and illegal gifts or campaign contributions. So this is about much more than a couple of tickets. They hamilton. Oh, yeah. It's about it's about buying influence, and and and what Andrew did in response, and he did take actions. Benefitted these people. Well, it's it's got to be frustrating. You're up against somebody. After this occurred. She was unable to get a hold of either one, and that's unusual for her. So she came home the check. And unfortunately, the her surprise found such a tragic scene Hillsborough county sheriff Chad chronicler says it happened in an apartment on north forty second street. He says it appears that thirty year old one Hernandez killed his step-dad fifty nine year old, Michael Kurtz, and then himself. It's been five months since an Ohio mother and her baby were struck and killed as the result of street racing along Tampa Bay shore boulevard since then the city has been moving forward a number of plan safety projects along Bayshore and today, the city will turn on flashing beacons at three pedestrian walkways, gene Dunkin's the city's traffic director trying to strike the balance of allowing that roadway to be used for all nodes vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. And obviously those things are often in conflict with each other. But we did the best to make it a safe space for everyone. That's using that particular road. Following the accident? The city lowered the speed limit to thirty five miles per hour. There's a winner in the mega millions jackpot, not in the sunshine state. "There's already common law, self defense, which means in places where you are in public square and you result having to defend yourself with deadly force. There's already case law on the books where you've been able and you've seen cases where people are able to successfully argue the case that it made sense to be able to use deadly force, but to now. Take that to a different extreme into provide under the cover and the color of the law. People being able to snuff out innocent life based off of their perception of threat to me is is, is is a stretch too far as it relates to what we can do. Obviously, on that, I wanna make the case, and I want to use regular voices of Floridians to make the case to our lawmakers around the absence of common sense when it comes to these kinds of laws and the help them understand how families like mine like others who are raising black children and black and Brown children feel particularly under siege by laws like these take each case of Trayvon Martin and the trace of the case of Markey's mcglockton and there are many others, and quite frankly, talked to prosecutors who were saying are seeing criminals on both sides who are using stand your ground as a way to take out there. You know their, they're gang enemies because they both have weapons. So. What has also been extended to giving cover of for four legitimate you legal practices in our communities and prosecutors are left to do nothing about it because folks are able to clan stain your sustained, your ground as a San defense Arinze point. Before we let you go with regards to enforcing current gun laws before trying to pass new ones. What would you say science? So I would say one, yes, we must enforce a current laws, but we also got to do things like ensure that if you want to carry the power of God, it's a waste, but you gotta have a background check to do things like convicted domestic violence. Abusers should not get access to weapons, where they can snuff out the laws of their loved ones, closing the gun show loophole. These are extreme these on radical. I was sued by the NRA and Tallahassee because we refuse to repeal an ordinance in our city would simply said, you can't shoot guns and city parks. You can't shoot Guzman parks for our kids play and our in our families. Picnic that was considered to be too extreme. We, we've lost the commonsensical balance here. We're not talking about an affront to the second. We're simply talking about how do we keep our kids safe in school. How do we reduce the level of of ongoing everyday gun violence that pervades our neighborhoods. We gotta rip restore some decency here and unfortunately, the NRA runs roughshod over the state of Florida. Right now, we got to put some decency back into it. Andrew gillum the mayor of Tallahassee, Florida running for governor as democrat mayor Gillam. We really appreciate you making some extra time four. So thanks very much. "You'll find fresh air on NPR one or wherever you get your podcasts. Lewis, I know our time is short me, let's should get in another question for the mayor. Definitely a mayor. I did want to ask you about the issue of race because it's been pervasive throughout this campaign, but you already know this. Florida's one of the most diverse. Populations in the country. The latest census data says that sixteen percent of the population is black, twenty five percent Hispanic or Latino. How's your campaign connecting with black and Brown voters to get them galvanized to take part in this midterm election? Yeah. I mean, I think we are doing all the right things to try to communicate across, frankly, all communities. I've been in red areas, blue areas, purple. Yes, I was in Putnam, I think Trump one Putnam thirty points Flagler about the same much. We've been to the villages, but we are here. You know, I'll be at the university of south Florida where I am today with students just did a roundtable with a Puerto Rican leadership in Orlando, hosted an event. What he quests for Gillam a a little while ago was in Little Haiti and did a video because I couldn't make it down there for sort of baby Canada. I'll which went. Really well. So we're we're communicating across constituencies and just to give you an example of, I think how it is impacting us is that in the primary election, we saw one hundred fifty thousand voters. Turn out to vote who either one we're voting for the first time or two had not voted in the previous three elections. One hundred fifty thousand the last two races for governor Democrats lost by less than seventy thousand votes. It's my plan to double that number. In this general election of unlikely voters and many of those voters will be younger voters of color, more women, more poor voters. And I think we're going to perform very very well. But the reason why I've been going to diverse parts of our state is because we've got to stop treating the race for governor as if it's the electoral college, you don't win. One area loosened other win. One county lose another. The one who wins is the one who gets one more vote and that one vote may come through from anywhere throughout the length and the breadth of this state. So unprepared to go there. We'll go win because we're gonna give vote as a reason to turn out and vote for something and not just against. Are so many things. I would love to ask you mayor Gil so many great policy questions we've gotten from our listeners. Perhaps we'll have a chance to talk to you again, but one more matter of policy I'd like to ask you about before we let you go and then has to do with gun policy in the state of Florida. Lemme amalgamate to questions from two of our listeners by Email, Jim emailed mayor Gillam given that at least the house will be in Republican hands. What can be done to reduce the impact of Florida's stand your ground law. It seems unlikely you'd be able to repeal it and then Ryan emailed, what do you plan to do to better enforce current gun control laws before trying to pass new legislation mayor Gila. Yeah. Well, I, I think we have to work hard at the repeal of stand your ground. It is an unnecessary law and the state of Florida. We already have castle doctrine which allows for individuals to protect themselves in their businesses against intruders onto their property. Right. I'm sorry, I, I hate to interrupt. I think we should. Be clear the difference between what you're talking about just by way of context. The castle doctrine you referring to basically is that kind of your home is your castle idea that says you have the right to use deadly force to defend yourself at home, or at worst stand your ground carries it farther and says you have the right to use deadly force and they threatened anywhere you have a legal right to be just anywhere. Yeah. And again, that's that's victory Lanta ISM. That's the wow west in the city streets, you're able to make a decision about whether or not you consider somebody to be a threat out of your own imagination or in the recesses of your mind. And I think that that is dangerous. Kesse doctrine already, production, your home..

"It's important in it's played a big role in my thinking around criminal Justice reform at large mayor Gillam. One of the key ways that some are proposing to reintegrate folks back in the society has to do with the ballot initiative coming up next month. It would give. Formerly incarcerated people. They're voting rights back in the state of Florida. Now, former attorney general Eric Holder has spoken out about this issue before. Here's part of what he has said in many states felony disenfranchisement laws are still on the books and the current scope of these policies is not only too significant to ignore. It has also to unjust to tolerate across this country today an estimated five point, eight million Americans five point. Eight million of our fellow citizens are prohibited from voting because of current or previous felony convictions. Now, that's more than the individual populations of thirty one United States thirty. One of our states that's former attorney general Eric Holder. Now, I understand that there's tremendous support for this item among some voters. Other voters mayor Gillam are a little hesitant, kinda wondering whether there needs to be another step before. Ex-felons are able to vote again, whether there are certain circumstances. Under which felons should still lose their voting rights for life. How do you view it? Well, you know this constitutional amendment amendment, four already make certain carve-outs for individuals, sex, sexual violence offenders, and others who have committed certain crimes where there is still a process for them to have their rights restored..

"Say, look, all are. Welcome. All are welcome. Let's just and Furthermore I refuse to be a zero sum game politician refused to say that if I don't get one hundred percent, I'm. Zero change it up. If you don't like what the president is doing, do do something else that actually models the virtuous behavior that you want to see that can be the new vision. And you know, I actually when you put it that way, I do see that Stacey Abrams the candidate, the democrat now, democratic nominee for governor in Georgia is someone who speaks in that way, mayor Gillam of Andrew gillum of Tallahassee who's running for the democratic nomination for governor in Florida. He speaks in this way of going to where people don't expect to see you where it might be Trump country, but they're going there to say, I hear you. You probably not going to vote for me that if you do vote for Mary, even if you don't vote for me, here's what I'm going to do because we are all in this together. So TOTO you've given me a Ray of hope beyond that. Look, let me talk to the conservatives here for second because I I know lots of good whole wholesome, right wingers it listened to you because you've got a great podcast. The same thing is true. If you're discouraged about what's going on in this country. Not for any reason whether you voted for Trump or not. You can actually build a better future by using the same virtues that we're talking about here that I've just recommended liberals like a lot of concern progresses. You're gonna say, Arthur Brooks is giving me advice. Give me a break, but a lot of conservatives might and the point of it is if you don't think that we're going the right direction if you don't think we're making progress, if you don't think that things are actually getting better, what should the conservative movement be doing? And it should be doing exactly what you said. Go where you're not invited and say what they don't expect go to an end of Lacey pe- meeting and say, like, I know some of you might leave thinking. I'm wrong and maybe that I'm crazy. But none of us are going to leave tonight thinking I don't care about you and your family and be sincere in the effort to make it so. And that's the keys sincere because I can. I'm glad you use NWC p because you know we black folks are are skeptical lot, especially when someone who's ever been here before shows up and starts saying all these good things. Skeptical of me. None are. Now, I know where you're coming from. I, like I've said before, I've read your book so, but. But there are a lot of people who go to other communities that go to the black community. They say these things and then it's not backed up by anything. Oh, yeah. I mean you, you can basically just do propaganda for sure. I mean, there are people who do this all the time. They go someplace for the not invited or welcome, and they say things that people don't expect, but it is just rhetoric. I mean, you have to make it true. By the way, one of the things that are recommended volatility is go to that place and make it sticky by going five more times that is that actually has got some power behind. It's like, yeah, le- that keeps showing us the deleo. You know, he could be someplace else. He could be firing up his base. He could be running a rally of depending on what community you belong to of of hard left. People are hard right people, but keep showing up. And by the way, listen mentioned that it's crazy, isn't it? But we're talking about these these basic forms of political communication that we seem to have forgotten. Now, the reason I'm optimistic is because I see more and more..
