Detroit Mayor Duggan doubles down on not wanting J&J vaccine for 'foreseeable future'

"Appear to walk back comments he made this week after turning down doses of Johnson and Johnson. Covert 19 vaccine have to push back from public health experts. This is what Mayor Duggan said on Thursday. Johnson and Johnson is a very good vaccine. Madonna and Fizer are the best and I am going to do everything I can to make sure the residents of the city to try to get the best on so as you know, I went to the White House got a commitment for 15,000 week of a modern adviser. We've been enlarging it. And this week we've got 29,000, Madonna and Fizer vaccine 17001st doses. 12002nd doses. Those majority Fizer vaccines will cover every single Detroiter looking for a shot next week. I expect us to have between 25 30,000 more majority and fires of vaccines and again, I believe we will have a majority. If ISA vaccine for every Detroit who wants one. The day may come when we have more Detroiters asking for vaccines. We have identifies her. In which case we'll set up a Johnson and Johnson site, But I have say for the foreseeable future, I feel confident that we will have a majority advisor vaccine for every Detroiter who wants to get vaccinated Detroit Mayor

"Told me roughly 200 arrests so far, but they're still looking the idea. Another 150 people, so why is that? Well, here's the deal The FBI's got about 200,000 tips from the public. They've gotten tens of thousands of pieces of digital evidence. And while they do have hundreds of people working on this, it takes an incredible amount of time. So they're urging people the hot back online. Take another look at the pictures they've posted on FBI dot gov. And see if you can help. It's FBI. Doc of Law enforcement also says there's a real need to identify the person responsible for planting pipe bombs at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee the day before the riots. There were 563 new cases of the Corona virus, reported by the Health Department yesterday. Another 60 deaths here in the mission in Michigan. And the city of Detroit will begin using two of the city's largest churches to vaccinates people starting Saturday. Anyone over the age of 65 can get a shot at the fellowship Chapel on the West Side and at the second Ebeneezer on the East side, Mayor Duggan saying this will enable them to reach more citizens. Previously, vaccinations were available on Lee at the TCF Center parking garage. Duggan and the Henry Ford and GM C. Health care systems are prepared to open back seen centers. In various locations. Even with the downturn in the number of cases of covert 19 governor Whitmer says there is still reason to remain on guard. She pointed to the fact that a variant of the virus has now been found in at least 10 counties in the state. Widmer says these variants are cause for concern and could lead to the possibility of more restrictions being put back in place. If the numbers take a swing upwards, Taking.

"60 WJR were Detroit comes to talk. Oh this afternoon. With the economy struggling in the pandemic. Governor Whitmer wants the Republican controlled Legislature to pass a stimulus plan for Michigan up up to $100 million. Whitner says the state action is needed as the federal government struggles to approve a new round of financial relief. Whitmer will need Republicans support in Lansing. She deals now, with a lame duck session where unresolved bills often die. The state Health Department of Reports 8080 more cases and 103 deaths from the day before the state says 70 deaths announced Saturday were identified during a vital records review. Congress remains gridlocked over rolling out a new stimulus deal. Impasse continues on Capitol Hill as both sides Republicans and Democrats try to come up with some sort of a deal for a coronavirus relief package. But even though this impasse has been going on now, for quite some time, there are some on Capitol Hill who think the logjam not only can but absolutely must be broken. And time is of the essence. Fox News has learned that There are some measures that may be attached to a spending package that has to be passed by December 11 to avert a government shutdown that could offer some relief even as federal health officials meet this week to try to make crucial decisions about whom they'll recommend getting the Corona virus vaccine first. Mayor Duggan says Detroit has handled the Colbert better than the suburbs have all summer and into the fall. If you drove around the city to traders were wearing masks. It was not necessarily true in the surrounding communities, and the governor has made this point repeatedly. But literally in Detroit. We have an infection.

"You could keep the mortgage the same front a monthly basis but spread it out over time. That's what we're able to do, because we have so much death that is being paid off. We can borrow $250 million and keep the tax level exactly the level that you're paying. This year that something that would have been inconceivable a few years ago. But this is this is the only way we have to finally get rid of blight from the city of Detroit neighbors. So are you really down to 16,000 to say it like that? Down to the 16 Thousands a lot, But But I remember where you began. Your really down to 16,000 spots. Tio. If we got all 16,000 down, we consider it like our blight issue was actually over. Very close to that. So you're right. We started over 40,000. We've got about 60,000 handled Ah, and and we've got about 16,000 ago on and that's we're going to start next year if this passes And every single vacant house that is between two occupied houses will either fix it up or knock it down. And then we'll go to every house that's next to an occupied house so that within a couple of years Nobody in the city will be going to sleep at night worrying if the abandoned house next to him, catches fire and spreads to their house, and it's been a situation Detroiters have lived with way too long. Or if anyone's hiding in that house or ready to jump in, pounce on kids who might walk past it. All right. We will have one more segment with Mayor Duggan coming up on the other side of this If you've got more calls 877 40 for Mitch to speak to the mayor. First, this.

Hurricane s I s is slamming into North Carolina last night, and it brought coastal and inland flooding to the region. It's now headed up the East Coast. Meteorologist Pedram Javaheri says the fast moving storm will likely hang onto its tropical storm status even as it pushes on upwards into the state of Maine. New York City is about 400 miles away from the center of the storm. We expected to get within this region inside the next 10 to 12 hours as of rapidly shifts off towards the North, so expected to push just east of Washington, DC, sometime around the early afternoon hours, potentially go directly over Philadelphia and possibly just around Or west of New York City as well by about, say, 5 to 6 PM still as a tropical storm notice, even potentially into parts of Canada as a tropical storm before it loses its tropical characteristics. If you're heading to the polls today, it is Election Day Primary day here in Michigan. You'll be reminded that masks are not required today, but they are encouraged. Before the voting starts and mats at seven o'clock. We have to get the law changed to start counting these ballots before Election Day, but there's gonna be hundreds of people running. "From listeners or fans whatever on on our facebook page. This matter of sending in federal agents to cities to quell protests again. These are unidentified federal agents. There's no they don't have any names. There's no badging you know indicating where they're from. They've been arresting protesters and taking them away in unmarked cars very very controversial here. you know some people wouldn't support, but some people saying well, you know if if these cities could take care of their own business that we wouldn't need to do this, you know it's clear to me Jair, and as it's been clear throughout this whole thing that there is a certain subset of the population that is just. Clearly very uncomfortable with protests of any kind, despite the fact that they are enshrined as a write in the first amendment well. I think they're uncomfortable with protests that they don't agree with. Yeah, let's just be clear. They were totally fine with what happened in Lansing. With with people who came out protesting the you know the governor stay at home mortars, and and brought guns and flouted social distancing rules in you know no-one wear masks, and so forth right? Yeah, I mean. Let's call a spade, a spade like a lot of support for the kind of actions that we're talking about here are from folks who don't live in the city and you know this happens on a lot issues having been in the city. City lived in the city awhile. I have learned that there is kind of this group of people who drank beer here for two hours at one time last summer, and now has like two years. Full of opinions when they have no idea what's actually going on here and don't wake up here. Some of them don't even work here. I mean it's just kind of crazy to me that that's the case because if any of us were. Were to go into any other said he'd be like well. You know you all are animals and Blah Blah Blah. You know they'd rightly be be angry and frankly the city resident. It's hard not to be angry about that. That kind of stuff and we're talking about these crackdowns, and all of this other stuff I'm just skeptical that it's going to work because we've tried these kind of tactics before the generally don't have long term impact except for. For, just incarcerating a bunch of people and not fixing the underlying issues of injustice and poverty and inequity and the institutional racism in our country, but you know usually the answer to this kind of stuff. Historically America has been lock them up all right meanwhile mayor Duggan switching topics here. Mayor Duggan got what he wanted with his life proposal from the city council brings up to speed there. Yes, he did. I GUESS TWO TIMES IS A. A charm, it was a close vote, but proposal N we've talked about on previous show, providing two hundred and fifty million dollars in funds to demolish fourteen thousand homes and Rehab about eight thousand homes passed city council. The swing votes came when a significant portion of the money was reprogrammed for rehabilitation instead of demolition. We went into this in detail before, but there are set aside for detroit-based companies and resident workers. So you know the plan is fifty. Fifty fifty one percent of the hours is done by Detroit residents. There's a preference towards a trait based companies. This is pretty standard. It's something that is really a goal to shoot for This will go on the November ballot for voters in the city of Detroit..

Chief medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta says many Americans haven't been vigilant enough. "I like that new open pretty good as mayor Duggan can here we have nothing but time on our hands around here time and time talent recording studios in bad glad to have you joining us mayor Duggan mayor Duggan has done this for a while since he's been elected and we try to do this on Tuesdays what we can once a month and we're happy to open up the phone lines and a lot of people are gonna have questions for mayor given everything that's been going on the last couple months eight seven seven forty four Mitch to speak with the mayor on any issue that you've got at all let's dive right in mayor Duggan and I think the first thing I think I'd like to ask you is I know you had a meeting with the protesters in the midst of some other protests they made some demands what can you share with us about that meeting what they asked for and where we are on all that well I think we have to be clear on what who the protesters are there are a lot of activist groups in this city people like the national action network Detroit three hundred groups that have gone into people's homes to head off foreclosures and evictions in those groups we've been working with all along there is one group of protesters that starts marching at four o'clock at night and and it's one group and they deserve respect but it's been covered as if they are the only voice to Detroit and in fact they're just one of many voices and we met with them we said hi your efforts ought to be respected your voice needs to be heard but you can't displays all of the organizations are working here for five and ten years you have to be a part of it and and they didn't really like that answer and then that's where we are so it wasn't particularly well received and and then I know that the the list of demands that sort of came out in the media I don't know if they are accurate or not but you feel no compulsion to act on those within any given period of time at the summit together I'll say this we are in the room every single day with activist groups in Detroit chief Craig has been partners with people who have historically been big critics of the Detroit police department and we haven't had to cut any incidents here you've seen in other places and so we are not going to stop meeting with the Detroit groups that have been working at this all along and I don't know if you follow this but the number that are tried activists have very publicly attacked this particular group of marchers at their site verbally I had a couple of days so we have lots of different groups in the city lots of different people we should listen to everybody respectfully borne out saying to anybody because you March at four o'clock your voice counts and nobody else is done there's a lot of her group's account understood how do you react to the phrase and the spirit of the fund the police you know I think I react the same way that ninety percent of the traders react to which is not in support so you know yeah up until cold with it I was still doing is you know one meeting a week and a living room in a different neighborhood of the city talk to the neighbors and in every neighborhood in the city I I hear the same thing we want nine one one response to be quicker it certainly got a lot better and the other thing that I hear from every neighborhood in the city is there are far too many speeders and the city and while we've done a pretty good job of dealing with the violent crime in dealing with the nine one one response we don't have enough traffic patrol on the street I think the great majority of Tories would agree with that and chief Craig and I are working right now to fill the vacant police positions we have a major recruiting campaign going because I think people are in this city one of the officers on the street they want a police department that is from the city that reflects this city in respect to the city and I think that's what chief Greg is been built well it's clear relative to other cities we've had no where near the amount of incidents no where near the amount of looting no where near the amount of anger happy they're nowhere near the amount of looting we have not had a single store looted now run well you know we're near right right no hooting no fires with the only major city in the Midwest they can say that in the Detroit police department's done a good job in a big part of it is that Detroiters stepped up as we pointed out almost seventy percent of the people who have been arrested for disorderly conduct came from outside the city but on those first two nights of protests whatever I was on the streets it's all dangerous it was Detroiters intervening just private citizens saying you're not doing that our city and and that really is what prevented us being the same is is mostly other big cities in the country eight seven some forty four minutes the mayor Duggan is with us for this hour if you've got questions to ask him and I'm sure many of you do Paul will begin with you go ahead you're on with their dog thank you for taking my call first of all I'm downtown every day every day I think the police do a great job you've done a fantastic job in developing this city everywhere I look there's construction you're doing great my thing is was almost abandoned land and the sea Troy sure we can come up with some type of Marshall Plan and go to the wash and say look we've got also van land we gave renaissance zones create some jobs in this city and put the city back on its textiles what it needs to be done and finally I'd like to see fourteenth street turned into a two way street from the Boulevard to court down so I'll listen to you as you're talking well yeah you got it because you have to turn twelve street into a two way street one goes north and one goes south in the question of one versus two way streets is an interesting one we changed second two or three years ago back to a two way street I think people they're very happy with that so that's that's something that based on what the neighbors want we're willing to take a look at but course we have to turn vacant land into jobs we turned course the vacant land over the east side of five so as in jobs coming in from fiat Chrysler we're turning the train station with Ford motor company into another five thousand jobs in Corktown and you're going to continue to see I think development come in here and and you're but you're right that's exactly what we need the vacant land we have is a competitive advantage and puts us in a position where you look at for the last ten years every major assembly plant the country was built on farmland in the south.

R. and a quick note here because some people were asking I didn't see it but the the mayor mentioned apparently the the Ford fireworks and I maybe you heard about it maybe read some comments from mayor Duggan regarding the Ford fireworks at eight the I know that he and Tony Michaels much Tony of course you've heard a million times on the air with us as well the president and CEO of the parade company of the mayor and he have been in discussion about late summer show that and maybe it'll be a television only radio only because we do our radio show so I'm kind of involved in th following what they might do but but we're pretty sure that over the next few weeks we're going to hear something about the Ford fireworks it said it's so important to our city and to what end to the people frankly maybe you saw in New York yeah they came out yesterday saying that they will have their fireworks the Macy's fireworks will happen no matter what so let's hope that's the case here for our Ford fireworks in Detroit let's just hope they find a way to make the magic come to life in our great city that we have come to depend on we could use that kind of a boost usually runs to the end of June Dick and were hoping that like I say they're going to be able to do that again with so many things so many things that we count on have been canceled it's been a drag but speaking of some magic the some players from the pistons and the Detroit youth choir have gotten together and they've done such a great job they put out a recording of the song stand by me to honor doctors nurses and healthcare professionals on the front lines battling covert nineteen sheltering in place and singing together a sure a they're so good under the direction of Anthony whites in the Detroit youth choir and the Detroit Pistons some of the pistons in there did you hear the voice of a former piston Isiah Thomas he's in there singing along with Joe Dumars Chauncey Billups Richard rip Hamilton day bang and Derrick rose and thanks to a pistons owner Tom gores palace sports and entertainment vice chairman arn Tellem and the pistons making a donation of two hundred fifty thousand dollars to the community foundation of southeast Michigan's covert nineteen health fund in along side the video's release they did this as well so this is all good news there are many good things positive things there that are coming out of this horrific virus that's just another one of the good ones as we continue our relentless positive radio.

"First of all I care for my elderly here and I'm concerned about you know infection there the question is will the test when they're available will they die show the symptoms of the disease before presents on some tops now why you so let me say this the you will you will never get a test before symptoms you're gonna have to get a doctor's order even when we get into two thousand and three thousand a day you're gonna have to get a doctor's order in your doctor will order tests without some sort of symptoms up who knows maybe at some point they'll be some internet test but that's not anytime in the foreseeable future but you should be very careful with your aunt and I know they they talk about masks are effective they are effective other people affecting you but they are effective if if you potentially have a disease in so you just gonna have to be really careful because the odds are the corona virus won't be terribly hard I knew but I need a two year old could be put the mask on to keep from infecting someone else not just too and I don't touch the mask with your hands because they said in the mask is dirty on the outside and then you kind of read through to keep your hands off your mouth is there any way to get more masks and some of these basic things it out in mass supplied itself so you don't people were wearing masks to keep from getting the disease and they bought up all the mass and it really has very little value the the mass will catch your water droplets sprang into the air and but they don't really stop the water droplets coming your way so people use them when they didn't have a lot of value and people are trying to make them now when we put some people to work here in Detroit just making surgical masks a lot of people looking for work yeah I I don't know what the mass companies that don't ever looked into that one eight seven seven forty four minutes back to the phone lines better on the Mattel program mayor Duggan your question please where I would love for you to come into any one of the automotive there are twelve people on my team we literally work album to album my partner and I put in the dashboard I did it on one side by partner gets done on the other doesn't get much closer quarters from now I am how about yeah so I don't I don't have the mayor does not have authority to shut down private businesses so that's not something that I've spent any time on that would rest with the governor under state health initiative and so I I I like will react to a but I got to focus on what I can I can do so you're on the Mattel program mayor Duggan so do we lose him when I walked in the door okay we'll go ahead Sir what's your question for the mayor I don't know I just have a comment I'm not possible in fact been prevented it uhhuh and I work at a local area hospital and wait hold on it we are ramping up our testing what testing is only for people who have symptoms right so I guess I'm hearing a lot of questions from people to say Gee I think I was exposed to I want to make sure I'm well that's not a testing it for right yeah we can't say that enough folks who repeated a bunch of times don't try to get a test we just gonna clog up the system if you think you might have it so it you've got to have symptoms in those symptoms are going to end up being coughing a fever severe sore throat or something like that you don't you won't get past the doctor to get you know permission to go get the test and and meanwhile it's like the people calling the cops asking for toilet paper your clock up the system the request it's not going to go through so don't do it let's talk a little bit about economics mayor Duggan in the city of Detroit where were run this big customer come back a lot of that is fueled by and then the population in downtown Detroit you know walking around shopping going to restaurants are very proud of all the restaurants were open what's going to happen is there any form of relief for those businesses you know with the some of them are very young and have don't have in stock pot a lot of money up for savings yet for the handle something yeah we're too early in the process to know that in Seoul in the president's throwing around big numbers out of Washington does that help any of them I know the legislature is trying to figure out what to do and so I just don't know the answer to that right now I I get it I don't know how to describe this and the governor and I are literally eighteen hours a day on the question of how do we keep this personalities of the question earlier call ahead as do you shut down the auto plants are not ever talk to the governor about that today I am sure they're sitting around with their doctors making exactly those calls right now I would say ninety percent of the focus is on slowing the spread of the disease we get three or four weeks down the road I think you have a lot more conversation but I'll give you a simple example match of the city of Detroit gets six hundred thousand dollars a day in taxes from the casinos so when the governor called and said I got a shot the casinos down that's huge money to the Detroit budget I supported her because it was the right thing to do right health wise but but a lot of us have got financial implications are going to have to reckon with right now we're just focused on the health of the residents all right back with more with mayor Duggan eight seven seven forty.
