"You're in a position where you feel like you could do that what we're thankful for, and the people just in need of basics. Right now, you see the food bank lines or super long and I want to talk to my friend Dan Givens, who's joining us now? How you doing, Dan? Good. And how are you? I'm okay. I know you've been working with it with food banks, including security for for years and years and years all across the Chicago area, and I just want you to update us and tell us what it is You're seeing right now, as we approach the holiday Well, what we're seeing right now is just such a higher demand because of the the pandemic. People are loss of employment. Um, it's unbelievable. I was out in Wheaton at our Captain Liberty Land yesterday and one of our one of our beneficiaries People's Resource Center. They had cars lined up for a couple blocks, which is not The norm. In what most of our most of our food pantries they're doing right now, with Pull up, Pop your trunk, get your food because nobody's going inside and everybody's trying to keep their social distance. What we talked about back in March when the pandemic just started. Way gave people a list of different things that they could provide personal hygiene items. You know, toilet paper, seven products, etcetera and all the difficulties. I think what the food pantries need right now is money. Because what they need to do They need to go and purchase food that they need. We don't know what they need, but they know that their supplies are down. Do they need to go out and buy chicken poultry? You know protein items. You know that's the best thing we can do, And it's so easy right now. Because you can go online to to to, uh, For example, on our website. We've got all of our beneficiaries, which People confined. But what is it? Give it. Give it to a standstill. We have it. Yeah, yeah. Dan Givens, foundations that or g'kar, and that lists. All of ours are run through People's Resource Center, West Suburban community panty loaves and fishes. United community concerns Catholic charities that panels three counties to page pads, which is ah, there's a public action to deliver shelter. Almost walk in a system that we're making. Make the conception Food pantry in Elmhurst, your field food pantry. Now in the city, people can go to the Big one. The greater Chicago food depository, Go to Chicago's food, Bank that or click and find Food. And then you'll be able to find a pantry near you. Salvation Army. Our friend passed gas and he's working with that always. And then did they do a terrific job as well. Donate that Sell army metro dot org's put one thing in particular to I think we need to remember our armed forces veterans. Because not only are they suit seemed to always be in a crisis. If there, you know, maybe PTSD or whatever. But also this is a very serious time of year for people thinking about suicide. And there's a crisis hotline. It's better veterans crisis line that net or 1 802 738255. And if you could put that, I'm sure you're gonna put that Let me read, the better. It would be great time. Pete's got all the information, but it's Veterans crisis line that net or 1 802 738255 Press one. All right. We'll try to get that posted as soon as we can to so people can find that sure. Sure, one thing when I say people, you know, are agencies all the agencies and the providers. Need money is because they can. It's just easy for people to do. People say, How can I help all can l go online, Get all your credit cards, Give them some money and those go out and buy wholesale and get great deals to take care of Everyone's. There's also something that I think people need to consider as well. We could be good neighbors back in the day when that Schwarz started his good neighbor food drive. He wanted people to be just good neighbors take care left doing well being checked on the person across the street from you. Maybe the elderly person that's living by themselves. You're gonna accomplish two things. Perhaps you could take them a meal ringing the doorbell. You put your mask on. Stay back a few feet. Give them a meal. But when you're going to the grocery store, touch base with them and say, Can I pick up something for you? Because Maybe they don't have a vehicle. Maybe they're just afraid to go because they are elderly, and they don't want to take a chance. Let's not assume that our neighbors have what they need. You're good neighbor Go out and do Whatever you can to help Because it it takes a village. It takes a neighborhood. Um, I remember that we always is an angel's one by my office. Sorry. Okay. We got to hear you. Yeah, I know. But But You know, we let's let's keep our reputation intact to be in the city of big shoulders. Let's take care of our neighbors in need. Take care of ourselves and our family and take care of that little old lady or that nice gentleman across. This is a great commercial out right now. Little girl walking a plate of food over to across the street to a neighbor. Obviously, I think the guy lives by himself. It was just so grateful. I mean, how hard is that to do? It's not hard at all. It's not, and I would say well being checks financially and things they need, but also mentally. I mean to check in on people. It's It's super important. We were talking to Dr John Duffy about that. Just last week, he says, Ask the question. How are you and then follow up and say No, really, How are you? Can I do anything to help and that alone can sometimes open the door to just a meaningful, You know, a powerful exchange and people can help each other. I mean it, Zilu Lee. I mean, I remember when we talked before and shortly afterwards, a Friend of Mike Ryan, who his phone charger died. And and Sergeant Pete and you, You put us in touch with the person on the desk and they made it well, being checked. Not only do well being check, but they took him a new charge of first phone. He's in his eighties. You know, he lives by himself does not have any family on guess. Oh, they made his day. They thought I didn't know if Ryan was Six was something wrong, But I mean, that's the kind of thing people need to know about our police department. You know, they're They're more than just the person stopping you for doing something wrong. You know, they take care of our neighbors in need as well. Get enough Attention for that. I'm happy to hear that. I didn't. I didn't know that other piece of it. I know you had reached out with someone who needed help. I didn't know what ended up happening there. I'm happy that worked out and they didn't follow up. They called me When they were in his apartment with the new Charger of the The two officers called me. Let me talk to round two. Sure me that he was okay. Great. That's just above and beyond. It is totally. I'm so happy to hear that. Listen to the stand. I got this text from listener to 1 90. I just posted this on my Facebook page. Perhaps you could share this with your listeners. So many people reducing the size of their Thanksgiving gatherings. This year. I offered this suggestion. Take the money you would have spent, but didn't on this year's feast and donated to your local food pantry or take that money and buy food and take it to the pantry and donated neither instance they'll be grateful for your donations. This will be a way to share your Thanksgiving feast with many, many others. We wish you all is not great, safe, healthy happiness. Great. What's that? If you remember back and all that some of my friends are listening now, what started the whole awareness with myself? And you know, it's just been an ongoing thing for 37 years was listen to Ed Schwarz, his very first good neighbor Food drive on Bradley Place. He was mad that Mayor Byrne was spending $300,000 on fireworks when people were going to bed hungry. I'm taking myself Chicago's going to bed hungry. This is back in the day when you couldn't rescue food. When you know you didn't you couldn't go into you know somebody's dumpster and because because it was illegal, really? But then the good Samaritan came along. And restaurants could donate food that they had left at the end of the day without any repercussion of being sued on DSA. Oh, that's just not only does that help, but but now with restaurants You can't have a critical stage in their survival..

"Um, there's a street named after you hear on Harvey. By the hospital heading there now for the night shift. So I was wondering how long has ST splendid one with that name? He was named in August. 22nd 1992 and I used to sell newspapers on that corner. And there's a great story in the book about that. When I was eight years old, that was selling newspapers in all the cars and Harvey were blowing horns and people were coming out of everywhere and thousands of people blowing horns, and Harvey was a thriving metropolis in those days and I asked one of the elders What's going on? They said it, Bluebird, Rhodey! And they explained to me Luba Joe's from Harvey and he, you know, he played shortstop for the Cleveland Indians at age 24. He managed even Indians toe a pendant and the World Series and he's from Harvey and and I went down to the corner. I sold all my papers. Right there. 150 50, where the Post office was in the club, and Lou Boudreau came out of the outcome in people cheered and and I was so excited. Someone from Harvey was famous and they took Bluebird roll down the field and I walked home and I was thinking that day like Little Boy's who cashed somebody. Harvey, Illinois is famous and like a little boy, So I start fantasizing that, Wow, maybe one day they'd have a parade for me in the band and all that little boy's dream that August 22nd 1919 90 toy went back to that same corner in that street. Recent street in the guy who introduced me to the crowd was Lou Boudreau. Wow. Wonderful. Yeah, wonderful. I'm about a block away from it right now. Well, Do I have a question? Did you perform at the One of the first Chicago fest that want a native here under Mayor Byrne. Yes, I did. I perform the ice. I did do that. And by the way, Thank you for what you do. "To three somebody told me they were planning a trip to Austria and they're living in a matter of weeks quote what do you think about that question mark close quote I think what maybe Peter Greenberg said applies to those of you that have trips scheduled and you're thinking about canceling them if that means that you have to eat the ticket he says wait to the last minute to do that I mean should if you're going to just not go and swallow it then wait till the last minute because Hey maybe things will be better or be maybe the airlines will be more inclined to give you a refund or a voucher for the value of it even if they won't now there's no sense in canceling a trip early so you need to have two plans V. I'm going to travel with that plan and the I'm not going to go plan and now what am I going to do best to capture as much of the lost costs as possible and he said usually that means not doing anything now waiting to the last minute is probably a better way to go if you're trying to get your money back they might be more generous as each day take so long and the Dow is down a thousand points today just a couple of other number sixteen nations have closed all school the virus is now in a hundred different countries deaths in Italy or at six thirty one but in China the raiders draft dropping rapidly in the last twenty four hours only twenty four new cases in all of China so maybe that's looking on the bright side there is a a piece I saw it in a place called home snacks dot net home snacks dot net is an aggregator site where they take a bunch of information about things and then they come up with calculations what's the best city in America for restaurants what's the best place in Illinois for schools I mean any sort of thing that you might take a bunch of information and come up with a measure this is what they do on this website the latest thing they posted was the best Chicago suburbs to live in for twenty twenty and number one on the list as western springs western springs just off the Burlington northern line I know that because that's how I used to go and it was the next stop down the road for me the median income in western springs is a hundred and sixty two thousand dollars unemployment is very low poverty is very low it's a swell place to be so great schools the next one is when that because I mean none of these are surprising right if you live in one FK yeah it's a good place to live why don't I moved to America I know why number three is will match hello then river forest Glen coal super rich two hundred nine thousand dollars is the median income in Glencoe I got an idea what did you make two hundred nine thousand dollars moved inland call can still is next then Deerfield Hey Steve Deerfield number seven on the list best suburbs to live in Chicago median income hundred forty four thousand thank you for that Clarendon hills is eight also on the BNSF line then lagrange which is also on the line but that's a good train to be on but you didn't give the lagrange the average income hundred and twenty one thousand old live in Deerfield said lagrange and then Inverness which is again a swell place to be hundred eighty thousand the median income nice small city will certainly look at this list and think I want to just tell us where the rich people are the weather will be rich that's not that helpful so I said to myself self what's the first place for the average income the median income is below a hundred thousand dollars give me some of those places the least I can dream the first one on the list to be secretary is lagrange park ninety six thousand then you've got Arlington Heights at number twenty eight on the list just below long Grove Arlington Heights ninety one thousand then weakening is next at ninety eight thousand saw Arlington Heights in Wheaton Oak Park population fifty two thousand is thirty two on the list at ninety one thousand in Indian Head park at eighty two thousand is number thirty three on the list so you just work your way down down down down Lockport is sixty six eighty four thousand it pretty much follows that they use census data and FBI crime statistics to try and figure out where the best suburbs are to live and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know where the more money is yeah it's probably better Hey John you're on WG and what we do for you John you're on the air yes and I live on the south side of Chicago every year we have this parade goes off without a hitch at at everybody's outside enjoy themselves I can understand it service inside of the building what error everybody's outside and from there it cleaner clearer and all this is wrong to to cancel that should okay the last time this thing was canceled was one what mayor Byrne was in power and she got mad at your mom said you can have the parade well they want to get that the parade anyway because most year pollution planning and public works people live in the nineteen forties so they could get it to work in order to know which no problems this I don't understand I mean these are our elected officials to enact kings and queens internet put the force down like a dictator what this is rock we have the option the option to to have the parade we planned it does a lot of people involved in it you just can't come in shape or not we're going to cancel it we're gonna put it off another time because a lot of these people may not be in back in town again to do it I disagree with what the mayor said on this one one hundred percent and the same with the government the governor this is wrong think about it for a minute how many people died of the flu every year heck of a lot more than this this virus going around as long as you take care yourself and just days decision Norton NO R. Hey could ship at all but the cats so this parade is rock it just absolutely wrong and I I totally gets this idea talk to any of your family or friends about this to John you got like minds around you on this yes I do or die happy about it either because everybody in the neighborhood get together it's all right here we all have parties everybody enjoys themselves yeah yeah yeah if the weather's really nice all have a good time in the shops in the city no you can't do that are you a doctor no you're not you know they're not this is our call and we if the parade is it off the charge for the hearing of a cloudy weather we're out there but everybody gets together and it brings the neighborhood together and that's the important thing here so I don't I disagree with this woman and the governor on this one hundred percent no I I don't get it I got it all yeah I got to have them I'm glad to hear you man thanks for the phone call okay yeah that's going to be our web poll question our Daily News clicks you with John on that yesterday we asked you do you think this major college sports in pro sports should keep people out of the stadium's remember lebron four days ago said diet plan but he didn't really realize that the NBA was seriously considering limiting reporters access or even thinking about having the athletes play in front of empty stadiums so his quick quip was I plan I play for the fans you know my family my teammates but we can't do without the fans in the stands he has since backed off of that lebron now says not that he's the decider that he'd play in front of an empty stadium which would be so weird I think I would actually turn the TV on if you said the Lakers are going to be on any gonna be nobody there I think I'd watch for a while Chris I'm gonna watch the Lakers anyway they're fun team again but you get the point city your on WG and what do you want to say you're on the old city are you still there I am okay hold on one second I'm gonna get to in just a minute it's hell have been twenty six this is WGR if.

there was a show called the Kraft television theatre that was very popular in the mid sixties on TV and I have the original I repeat original cameraman it was used as a prop in that commercial undermine who did the commercials willed it to be when he passed on so if you want it's a one only in the world and it's an absolutely astonished it's made out of wood with it it's a little camera man on his Dolly and they all did it they actually magnetically drew it across in front of the camera that's our sand and salt is just one only creates I couldn't even put a price on that but that is such an awesome piece to have it yeah right right down that's amazing all right awesome thanks for the story nor appreciated three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred and close to the end of the have been hung as the velcro on the back is still intact they're nice hello the like in the in the lobby yeah probably does go for a lot of money yeah movie posters movie banners and kind of promotional it's all obviously about which movie it was parental mermaid Disney obviously does well so I'd say you know start in the three hundred range and see what happens an auction room okay three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred going through these texts that are all about the missing you I have a Betsy McCall Dalton says two two four she still has to barrettes in her hair and her crotch is not cracked I don't know it that says we're going to be okay yeah I'd that sim go for two or fifty to three hundred dollars so and you got the bar right so the only thing better would be in man my dad passed away of course man man man man man when she passed away she gave them to me more than three three thousand dollars I mean that's just yeah he he three thousand I would definitely I'm checked out see if it's worth maybe putting a few hundred into it if it's not working and get it working yeah that's great all work and they both here and all that yeah you're definitely then upwards of even four thousand or more than wow hello yeah that's great that's I know you can't sell them to certain state type researches and that the federal law says like Indiana couple I think there is like a state that you cannot sell them to people who live in those active forty two states to work I still think if you were to sell it on eBay I think you still could get you know as you start to ship those somehow and I have to be alright okay thank you because good luck to you thank you thanks rose that's a nice gesture yeah that that's that's interesting you know because I would say she waits a year the other eight states will probably also follow suit yeah and I'm looking at eBay and if they're selling that much I can see are crossing state with that being a problem as far as shipping it well Gregory out of time and as they said this entire hour that it's been really great remembering and recalling some of the members from the segments in four years we've been doing it together and is as we told you you know Greg is moved to Henderson Nevada they coming up right here in March and so this will be his last swap meet and and like I said we'll do some more you come back smaller area so that helps and not the Florida state sales everything so nothing's really going to change and they don't know out there that you go to the toy box first big rise you can and again we do probably had out there tonight but I don't remember that rose to fame right right it'll be fun Greg Flamm of course to peach picker and a long time part of WGN families for years here Gragg thanks
