"Terms can be true. Nbc Did a poll yesterday. Says Joe Biden is best equipped to beat? Don't said that I can beat him in those toss up states to those states. We have to win. I'm head by eight points across the board so in terms of being able to beat Donald Trump. I'm better positioned according to your poll than anybody else. Donald trump number one number two. The mayor makes an interesting point. The mayor says that he has a great record that he's done these wonderful things while the fact that fighting the fact of matter is he has not managed his city very very well when he was there. He didn't get a whole lot done. He has stop and frisk throwing up folk close to five million young black men up against the wall and when we came along and our administration President Obama and said we're going to send in a moderator to a stop it. He said that's unnecessary. So we're going to get a chance to talk about the mayor's record but in terms of who is best prepared to beat Donald Trump? Look at your poll. And what it says Mayor Buddha's you'd like to weigh in yes. We've got to wake up as a party. We could wake up two weeks from today the day after Super Tuesday and the only candidates left standing. We'll be Bernie Sanders and Mike Bloomberg. The two most polarizing figures on this stage and most Americans don't see where they fit if they've got to choose between a socialist who thinks that capitalism is the root of all evil and a billionaire. Who thinks that money ought to be the root of all power? Let's put forward somebody who actually lives and works in a middle class neighborhood in industrial midwestern city. Let's put forward somebody. Who's actually a democrat?.

What American voters want from the 2020 candidates

"We've been taking a deeper look at where the candidates stand and on key issues important to voters today we look at immigration. President trump ran on the promise of building a US Mexico border wall and during his presidency. He has worked work to make it harder for many migrants to apply for silom among other things. Some of the other top Democratic candidates are promising to reverse his actions joining joining us to talk about what Democrats are pledging to do a Sima Meta political writer for the La Times. She's an Iowa ahead of the caucuses. Welcome thanks for having me. I WANNA start with the news this week. The Supreme Court allowed a trump administration plan to go forward that could deny green cards to immigrants who need public assistance offence. What's been the reaction from twenty twenty candidates and we've heard a couple of candidates? Speak out about this already. I was at an event with the Mayor Buddha's yesterday Just outside of two moines and he was asked by voters about the specific case and he started quoting scripture. You know saying that you know the strangers was to be welcomed at this is sort of a core tenant of his faith And he really spoke about how this was sort of. Unconscionable we've also heard Elizabeth Warren. She tweeted about this. And we're probably I mean if you look at what the candidates have said about immigration and about about the trump administration's policy. This is an area where you're going to see a lot of agreement. I mean there's not a lot of daylight in other immigration policy their differences here and there but in terms of sort of cutting down access access. you know for people who are in the country illegally who are seeking a documentation. This is an area where you're going to see broad agreement among the Democratic candidates. Let's talk about some of those other there Big Questions on immigration. What our candidates saying about president trump's push to build a wall along the US border They're already some structures that are up. WHAT WOULD DEMOCRATS CRAT STU I most of them are completely against the wall? Some of them have the if you look at some of them have in some of the members who have been in the Senate for for example in the passive occasionally voted for uh-huh border funding Some earlier this year. I'm sorry late last year. When there was discussion about Daca young people were brought into this country illegally? When they're very young Some of them said that there they were amenable to some compromise. Like if you grant these young people citizenship might do a little bit of border funding But largely I mean they're pretty much in lockstep up in opposing the president's policies. They talk about several of them. Senator Klobuchar they talk about you. On the first hundred days using any type of executive action they could to undo Many of the president's policies the areas where you see some distinction is whether you know crossing the border illegally whether it should remain a crime or whether that'd be a civil we'll offense for example send closer she would keep it a crime other people like Bernie Sanders would decriminalize that decriminalizing illegal border crossings. That's something the thing that former vice president Joe Biden does not support here. He is at debate this summer. We're in a circumstance where if in fact you say you can just crossed the border. What do you say to all those people around the world who in fact want the same thing to come United States and make their case meant they don't that they have? I have to wait. Line the fact of the matter is you should be able to. If you cross the border illegally you should be able to be sent back. It's a crime this is an interesting topic in that It's been shown that Americans do want some sort of reform They perhaps wants some. I'm sort of a change at the border crossings. But exactly what they want. is still a question whether these candidates really address what the public wants. Well I think The former vice vice president is really an interesting spot because he's faced a lot of criticism from activists in throughout this campaign because during he was part of the Obama administration deportations rose was to record levels. During the Obama Administration. Someone's activists called President Obama the reporter and chief so he's as the live scrutiny on on the campaign trail. I mean I think you're exactly right. I mean if there's anything that people in both parties agree on it's that the immigration system is incredibly broken on the way it currently exists. They obviously differ very much in how they would fix exit. I WanNa talk to you about its immigration and customs enforcement which of course is responsible for deportations Bernie Sanders has called for the breaking up of Ice Elizabeth. Warren has called for the remaking of ice. How big of an issue is this? What our candidates saying well? This is an area where you actually can see some differences among the candidates in the field. I was at Bernie Sanders. There's rally on Saturday in the Ames and he was with Alexandria causing Cortez and she when she brought this up as a huge point in this was very very popular with the crowd that wants to. Do you have children in cages at the border once you have babies being from their mother's arms at the border that there is no reforming ice that needs to be abolished Other candidates take a more measured approach for example former South then mayor He sort of leans on his Mackenzie background here and that he wants to study it figure out what to do with ice. But he doesn't. He's not calling for abolishing it warrants and other ones so this is an area whether it's a little bit of daylight between the candidates another Issue that many Democrats are bringing up is increasing aid to Central American countries WHERE MIGRANTS OF COURSE COMING FROM HERE Senator Warren in September debate? Why do we have a crisis at the border in no small part because we have withdrawn help from the people in Central America who are suffering? We need to restore that help. We need to help establish a reestablish the rule of law so that people people don't feel like they have to flee for their lives. A number of candidates are also promising to protect so called dreamers of those are people who are brought to the country illegally illegally as children here Senator Bernie Sanders at a San Diego rally in December we will restore the legal status to the one point date million young people and their parents eligible for the Baka program. What if some of the other candidates Democratic candidates said set about DACA? Buddha judge coach are some of those others and this is an area where there's broad agreement that something has to be done for these these young people maybe all talk about this being one of their the top priorities tip. You know if they're elected to do this as soon as they get into office to take steps to protect these people Some of them also talk about expanding for example sanders who you just played. He would expand it to their your parents Kluber Sherwood raise the age for for which people were eligible which would also increase the number of people who could apply. Yeah you know when we talk about about This issue of immigration were often talking about coastal areas but former South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete. Buddha judge has spoken about what immigration can do for rural rule areas. Let's listen heart of my plan for revitalizing. The economies of Rural America includes community renewal visas that would allow cities towns and counties. That are hurting not only jobs for population to embrace immigration as we have in my city you know the only reason that south bend is growing right now after years. Years of shrinking is immigration That's an interesting take have have other candidates talked about this about spurring. The economies and other parts of the country intrigue through immigration former Vice President Biden. He's proposed allowing local governments to petition for new immigration visas to support economic growth. If there aren't enough local workers to jobs. I'm just sort of a new proposal. We're hearing this cycle. I don't think we've heard before and it's interesting. I mean being in Iowa I was obviously an incredibly homogenous state. It's a very. It's more than ninety percent white but there's certain pockets of you know when you get outside of the The Metro areas there these rural areas where young people are leaving and they need workers and you see some areas that have you know. have an increase in Latino workers. I think it started out long ago with the slaughterhouses etc.. But it's certainly expanded since then. I'm so I think it's an interesting area where people are talking about. You know where they're just simply aren't enough American workers I to fill the needs of a community. You're in Iowa as you as you just mentioned Has that been a topic of conversation about those immigrant populations in Iowa how they make up Iowa and maybe some of the candidates are trying to reach them. I mean immigration has come up on the campaign trail but it hasn't come up as much as some other issues is just because I think because there is such broad agreement among the Democratic candidates among the field About these proposals about what. The right thing is to deal with. People who are in the country illegally On the Republican side which have covered here in Pascal's it hasn't been much more of a flashpoint terms of what should happen to them. We talked about this a little bit but presidents on on both parties have failed to tackle comprehensive immigration reform for years. I mean this has been an issue if a Democrat is elected. What do you think the chances are that? They'll actually have success. I think it would depend on the makeup of the Senate. I mean there are some policy areas. Where if you look at the polling? There's pretty broad agreement among among Americans about what should happen in terms of you know for people who have been in this country for decades who have not committed crimes who have worked who paid into the system There's question about you should do they. They become citizens or to become legal residents but there is sort of agreement that you know we're not kicking out eleven million people. The question is once we we saw this Under George W Bush how the President Obama once it gets caught up in Congress and the Senate. It's it it just keeps stalling. Even when there does seem to be a chance of reaching agreement

"Never to be in the company of a progressive democratic donor. I couldn't be up here senator. Your net worth is one hundred times. I do not sell access to my time. I don't do call call time and billionaire as Senator Your presidential campaign right now as we speak is funded in part by money. You transferred having raised at those exact same big ticket fundraisers you now denounced. Did it corrupt you. Senator of course not uh-huh Jonathon. It's hard to find many people outside the warned campaign who didn't believe mayor. Pete got the best of that exchange and the the line really between those two of the night was. Don't hold other people purity tests that you yourself. You cannot live by because mayor pizza exactly right. She transferred a ton of big money from her senate campaign over to presidential and on cheese fueling her presidential run on that and he asked. I think the important question did that money compromise. Your values values. I don't think she had a good response and distracted by Thai like Elf like it's nice tributes tribute Tom Stars consistent about maybe change during the break. I I think last night Joe I think first of all that was that the sort of these signature exchange of the evening and in fact the phrase wine cave was trending on twitter for a good portion of the night after after that. I think it's reflective I think that first. Yes you're right that the two of them went back and forth the East Points Mayor Bluejays probably the best line there with purity tests remarked. That you just highlighted highlighted but it also goes to show not just the fundamental difference in how currently they're finding their campaign but also mayor Pete's standing in this race now. He took a lot a lot of heat last night. He is sort of become if not the overall front runner but certainly perhaps the front owner or co front runner in Iowa. He's doing very well there. He's pulling right near the top During the last debate as that as he sort of started to climb in the polls he's still didn't take a lot of attacks from his rivals last night he did. He was on his heels a little bit of times times been largely buried them. He's he's so nimble in the moment he's so very quickly we saw that again and that exchange with with Senator Warren and seemed to you you come out from it largely unscathed book to also understand what you said earlier. I do think there's a sense where people I was talking to you last night. This was this was definitely vice. President Biden's strongest debate. He's had a few very suspect performances. Some of the earlier evenings when he was on stage with the other candidates He didn't have any obvious stumbles. Last night he spoke passionately with authority on certain certain issues particularly on foreign policy and I think he just sort of exuded a sense of command of the stage which had been lacking in previous debates? Yeah well well Mayor Buddha judge has been climbing in the polls also came under attack by senator a mclovin last night in a heated exchange. The two candidates clashed over their experience and accomplishments before the break. You seem to imply that our relationship to the First Amendment was is a talking point as if anyone up here has any more or less commitment to the constitution than anybody else up. Here let me tell you about my relationship ship to the First Amendment. It is part of the constitution that I raised my right hand and swore to defend with my life. That is my experience and it may the same as yours but it counts senator accounts I want to be president of the United States and the point is we should have someone heading up this ticket. That is Actually one I know that if you just go by vote totals maybe what goes on in my city seem small. Do you WanNa talk about the capacity to win. Try Putting together a coalition to bring you back to office with eighty percent of the vote as a gay dude in Mike. Pence's Indiana.

All of this help pay the salaries for so when you make it big when you make really a big when you make up top one tenth of one percent big pitch in two cents so everybody else gets a chance to make an. Here's the thing that's something that Democrats Kratz care about independence care about and Republicans care about but regardless of party affiliation people understand across this country. Our the government is working better and better for the billionaires for the rich for the well connected and worse and worse for everyone else we come together when we acknowledged that insane. Thanks thank you Senator Booker. Do you agree with that strategy. Well first of all I think we all agree that we need to bring in a lot more revenue in this country. We actually have a real problem with the tax rates. Tax Loopholes tax. Cheats and I don't agree with the wealth tax that way that Elizabeth Warren puts it but I agree that we need to raise. He's the estate tax. We need to tax capital gains as ordinary income real strategy to increase revenue. But here's the challenge. We as Democrats need to fight for a just taxation system but as I travel around the country we Democrats also have to talk about how to grow wealth as well when I stood in Church recently and asked folks in a black church. How many people here want to be entrepreneurs half the church raise their hands if we as a country? Don't start if a party. Don't start talking not just about how to tax well but have give more people opportunities to create wealth to grow businesses to have their American dream because we need to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. Fifteen dollars an hour but the people in communities I frequent. They're not aspiration for their lives is not just to have those fair wages. They want to have an economy that provides not just equality equality in wealth but they want to have equality of opportunity. And that's what our Party has to be about as well senator. Warren wanted to respond. Sure so let me just tell you what we can do with a two cent wealth tax two cents on the top one tenth of one percent in this country and we can provide universal childcare for every baby in this. This country agency wrote a five. That is transformative. Why can provide universal pre-k for every three and four year old in America? We can stop exploiting the women largely black and Brown women. Who Do this work and we can raise the wages of every child care worker in Preschool teacher? In America we can put eight hundred billion new federal federal dollars into all of our public schools. We can make college tuition free for every kid. We can put fifty billion dollars into historically black black colleges and universities and we can cancel student loan debt for ninety five percent of the folks who've got it to sound well texts and we can invest in an entire generation generation Senator Booker respond. Sure you know again. I agree with the need to do all of those things. We're all united in wanting to universal preschool and I'll fight wait for that. We're all united in fund. Heck I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for two parents that went to Hughes but the tax the way we're putting a Ford right now the wealth tax. I'm sorry it's cumbersome has been tried by the nation's it's hard to evaluate we can get the same amount of revenue through just taxation but again we as Democrats have got to start talking not just about how he tax a stage but how we grow wealth in this country amongst those disadvantaged communities that are not seeing it look at the dollars in this country seventy five percent in the three metropolitan areas there is worth in the inner city. There is value in rural areas. If I am president states. We're going to have a fair. It just taxation were millionaires and billionaires. Pay Their Fair share. I'm tired of freeloading billionaires again airs. Thank you very much Sir Warren. Thank you senator. Mayor Buddha judge you said quote I will never allow us to we get so wrapped up in the fighting that we start to think fighting is the point. The Republican Party never stopped fighting President Obama in his eight years in office. So what would you do that. President has an Obama. Didn't do to change that. President Obama commented recently. We are now in a different reality than we were even twelve years ago and to me the extraordinary ordinary potential of the moment. We're in right now is that there is an American majority. That stands ready to tackle big issues. That didn't exist in the same way. Even a few years ago even on issues where Democrats have been on defense like immigration and guns. We have a majority to do the right thing if we can galvanize not polarized polarized that majority for example on healthcare. The reason I insist on Medicare for all who wanted as strategy to deliver on that goal we share of universal healthcare is that is something that as a governing strategy we can unify the American people around creating version of Medicare making it available to anybody. Anybody who wants it but without the divisive step of ordering people onto would whether they want to or not and I believe that commanding people to accept up that option whether we wait three years Senator Warren has proposed or whether you do it right out of the gate is not the right approach to unify the American people around a very very very big transformation that we now have an opportunity to deliver. But dear God we're going to have pathways to prosperity for more Americans. We're going to see a change what we see right now. Small businesses new new starts going down in this country. Thank you were in new entrepreneurs briefly just your last thoughts. I just the idea behind behind what is fair today. The ninety nine percent in America are on track to pay about seven point two percent of their total wealth and taxes not just read the top one tenth of one percent that I want to say pay two cents more Phil pay three point two percent in America. I'm tired of freeloading billionaires again airs. I think it's time that we ask those at the very top to pay more so that every single one of our children gets everybody's Oh he's tired of the corporation pin zero taxes with that. Thank you Mr Mayor Christian woke. Let's talk about Medicare for all senator warned you are running on Medicare the care for all. Democrats have been winning elections even in red states with very different message on health care protecting obamacare. Democrats are divided lighted on this issue. What do you say to voters who are worried that your position on Medicare for all could cost you critical vote? In the general elections. I look out. Tens of millions of Americans course struggling to pay their medical bills. Thirty seven million people who decided not to have a prescription filled. Because I just can't afford it people who didn't take the test the doctor recommended because they just can't afford it so here is my plant. Let's bring this many people in and get as much help to the American people as we can as fast as as we can on day one as president I will do off. Bring down the cost of prescription drugs on things like insulin and EPI be pins. That's going to save tens of millions hundreds of millions of dollars for people. I'm GONNA defend the affordable care act from the sabotage of the trump administration and the first one hundred days bringing a hundred and thirty five million people in Medicare for all at no cost to them everybody under the age of eighteen. Everybody who has family four income less than fifty thousand dollars lower the age Medicare to fifty and expand medicare coverage to include ditch a vision and dental and long term care and then in the third year when people have had a chance to feel look taste it and live with it. We're going to vote. And we're going to want Medicare for all senator thank you Senator Senator Sanders. Let me bring you into this. The.

Democratic debate: Elizabeth Warren evades question about tax rises

"Dominica I want to ask you about Elizabeth Warren as you heard earlier I was saying that she was their primary target the other Democratic candidates and one big issue that kept coming up again and again is that worn whitten say weather middle class taxes would go up under medicare for all and Pete Buddha judge caught her on it here he is let me be clear on this costs will go up for the wealthy they will go up for big corporations and for middle class families they will go down I will not sign a bill into law that does not lower costs for middle class families Mayor Buddha Judge you say Senator Warren has been quote evasive about how she's going to pay for Medicare for all response or you heard it tonight a yes or no question that didn't get a yes or no answer and lots of the candidates kept hammering her or going back to her on that Dominica what do you think how did this moment resonate we'll look last week was the first time that Elizabeth Warren caught Joe Biden in the average of the national polls and congratulations is what happens when you wind up at the top and the polls you become a front runner and you get a lot of that scrutiny and for people to Judge Amy Klobuchar we should remember they really pinned in Elizabeth Warren on what is her biggest vulnerability and that is whether she's electable that's been the number one issue with Democrats in this a lot of folks were just saying she also did not answer that question your thoughts about she didn't she didn't answer the question but that's the point is that she didn't answer the question and the the problem that what people digits in particular was pointing to is that her policies are too liberal to be elected and she doesn't want cops the fact that that people would have to probably have see their taxes go up because Bernie Sanders did say that that's what would happen aiming on the other hand was saying she's dismissive of other people's ideas and that's interesting thing and we're gonNA see how worn responds to all that that's right and she actually spoke about Warren's wealth tax listen I wanNA give a reality check here to Elizabeth because no one on this stage wants to protect billionaires not even the billionaire wants to protect billionaire we have different approaches your idea is not the only idea so dominica were hearing they're mclovin Shara Pete Buddha judge everybody just kind of puppy piling on but how you think Elizabeth Warren held up you know she's going to have to be at the centre now I mean she did not answer that question about whether people taxes are gonna go up she also didn't really respond to people to Judge when he said that you don't have a plan on this you have a plan on everything else but has basically been using Bernie Sanders as a heat shield to sort of keep the pressure off of her are when it comes to Medicare for all and there's a reason why people to judge kept bringing up Medicare for all who want it as he calls it which is essentially Medicare for all who wanted a medicare for all as a choice instead

"Of how it affects private health insurance plans plus how to pay for it and frame them in a way say that well if nothing else definitely got people talking the candidates do need to be prepared to deal with this stuff in the general election though I think many viewers were essentially asking how come we're trying to make the case now to Republicans during the Democratic primary when the stage is full full of Democrats you know and then there was yet another common frame which was to ask a candidate about somebody else on the stage who may or may not have actually attacked them mm-hmm for instance. Here's tapper later on in the same section quote. I want to bring in Marianne Williamson Ms Williamson. How do you respond to the criticism from Senator Warren and you're not willing to fight for Medicare for all and quote wait what like which criticism is that? When was it made? When did she call out Williamson? Give us a citation here tapper. Oh okay I found it. I went through the transcript and found it. Here's what he's referring to and it has nothing to do with Williamson. It is in fact a generic critique of a bunch of people on that stage okay reading from tapper earlier when he was questioning Senator Amy Klobuchar Quote Senator Warren at the beginning inning of the night said that Democrats cannot win the White House with small ideas and spinelessness in the last debate. She said the politicians who are not supporting Medicare for roll simply lack the will to fight for it and quote yeah all right anyway. This is how Williamson responded quote. I don't know if Senator Warren Said said that about me. Specifically I admire very much what Senator Warren has said and what Bernie has said and quote. She did go on longer but that's the core point she was saying in. Hey Jake that frame doesn't make any sense. I'm not aware of the allegation. You're making had to be frank. I think tapper knew he was just trying to pick a fight here. That's definitely what C._N._N.'s overall strategy was but this framing thing was irresponsible because it promoted conflict at the expense of dialogue and and that's no good for anybody C._N._N.. Right now the final frame the bothered me was how do I put this delicately the total B._S.. Frame here's how moderator Dana Bash pivoted pivoted discussion to immigration quote Mayor Buddha judge. You're in favor of getting rid of the law that makes it a crime to come across the U._S.. Border illegally why wouldn't that just encourage judge Moore illegal immigration and quote so look this is a willful misrepresentation of a topic that we have discussed on this podcast at great length and the candidates got into in the first last night of the June debates it has to do with WHO Leon Castro's plan to get rid of section thirteen twenty five a federal criminal code what that means is it would change the nature of of the crime of illegal border crossing from being a criminal offence to being a civil offense which is exactly what it was until nineteen twenty nine still a crime just dealt with differently within the court system. Bash must understand that because it was already discussed in the previous debate yet the frame was not about changing the type of crime than an illegal border crossing would be no the frame was and I quote again you are in favor of getting rid of the law that makes it a crime to come across the U._S.. Border illegally and quote that is not the judge's position at at all and Bash knows it tapper knows it. Everybody knows it. Buddha judge began his response by pointing that out quote when I am president event illegally crossing the border we'll still be illegal. We can argue over the finer points of which parts of this ought to be handled by civil law and which parts ought to be handled by criminal law but we've got a crisis on our hands and quote okay so let's wrap up this segment and move on but the important thing to take away here is that part of why we saw so much conflict last night night was because of the way the questions were framed at times. The framing was dishonest and other times. It was designed simply to provoke conflict which let's let's face. It is a We talk a lot about home automation and Internet of things on the show but if you want to fully trick out.

Okay, what's next mayor Putin, judge has kind of taken pride in the fact that he does not dabble in specifics. He's more about laying out the values behind things. But what if someone were to look into the specifics of his record? Well, Jonathan Larson from TY T investigates has done just that. And he's in covered yet another weird thing. Racially charged that happened under mate, mayor Buddha. Judges south bend, Indiana police department, and it is this. The article starts off by saying mayor, did you just controversial claim that a secret report? Exonerated his chief of police in an incident with racial undertones appears to be contradicted by the report itself, according to leak excerpt obtained by the young Turks. So this is the story of what happened in south bend, Indiana, when there was a report of a fight outside a community center, and there was one police officer named David Newton Lieutenant David Newton who went out to handle it, and according to a report from a civilian on the scene. He did not have the proper backup that was necessary. And that was supposed to be provided by the chief of police at the time chief run, teach men. And so there was an investigation done after the fact by the Indiana state police, and according to mayor people, everything was fine. There was no wrongdoing, because according to mayor pink Buddha judge the reports conflicted witness to witness. But here's what Buddha judge said a book. Digits refuse to release the ISP report, but told city officials in a letter that the witness accounts in the report, quote, make clear that Ron teach men who, who is white did not violate requirements for backing up fellow officers and teach, quote, has my full confidence. Larson continue saying, however, according to the leaked excerpt of the actual report, which includes a summary of the reports findings, none of the witnesses corroborate, teach men's account. That's the chief of police, the white chief of police multiple witnesses directly challenged his claims in some passengers witness say explicitly that teach men did fail to back up his fellow officer. So what Buddha, judge seems to have pawned off as listen? Their conflicting claims the only conflict is that the chief of police is the only one who doesn't corroborate everybody else's story that is the exact same saying, teach men was in the wrong. So if you're wondering why would judge backup police chief in this racially charged situation? Well, let me explain it in order to do that. I'm going to give you a little bit more context. Puna just. Office and the current chief police sheep at the time. South bend is Darrel boykin. He's African American. He's the first African American police chief, they had, then there's a controversy about how some of the cops were taped conversations were taped and so boykin didn't do anything wrong there and no one ever charged him. Let alone convicted more or anything along those lines. In fact, Buddha Jewish, then demotes boykin. See I tried to fire him in the modem and puts a new police chief in because some of the tapes apparently had a lot of the cops saying racist things. So now already, that's a huge problem, wouldn't you want to know what's in the tapes Buddha? 'age has convoluted answers as to why we shouldn't listen to the tapes, and why he had punished.

Well, at least Tony cats always knew that he was if you didn't take much all took a bit of honesty and actually listening to his words here believe we're gonna come from our communities communities like the one where I grew up which is an industrial midwestern city that is exactly the kind of place that our current president targeted with a message saying that we can. Find greatness by just stopping the clock and turning it back and making America great again when that passed that he is promising to return us to was never as great as advertised, especially for marginalized Americans, and there's no going back anyway. If the standing of what it is Donald Trump did. But you don't win anything by saying America was never great as advertised what a whole fully, hopefully, a, holy and incredibly ignorant thing to say true if he was standing right here. I would say mayor Buddha judge, you know, that's a very foolhardy ignorant thing to say, correct. A wholly ignorant thing to say America was never great as advertised. Yes is as great as advertise. If you want to argue could be better, I'm with you when we talk about slavery or any other issue. But the idea that it was never as great as advertised is unbelievably ugly thing to say, Mr Mann, certainly not Representative of what the country thinks or certainly what a real look at history. Not a Howard zinn look at history would give you. But the key to Donald Trump success in those midwestern cities was that he looked at the people there and said, I see. The Democratic Party called you racists, bigots, and by the way, pay more taxes, and what Donald Trump said is I see I'm aware you exist, and that you matter and they said, hey, someone sees me vote. "Literally sweeping the nation right now. It would be smaller homes. They are within the legal guidelines. Of course, you could fit two to three to normal plot of land, the vacant. Lots Jones is referring to are the byproduct of mayor Buddha. Judges one thousand homes in one thousand days project. So he had this program called a thousand homes in thousand days, and it's gotten not for some things that I at least did not encounter when I was doing my research on it. So I really can't say anything one way or another about the racism stuff. But but the knock on it was that they wanted. To get all these homeless people into a state of the art facility. We're in those people would start paying rent inside of that state of the art facility, you know, begging the question, obviously from whereas this money going to come from. And the alternative course of action that was being touted at the time was essentially tiny homes, which Mike cards on the table. I am generally in favour of as a homelessness solution in fav- versus having people in government housing. I think you're better off creating tiny home communities where people have their own specific roof over their head their own little micro a lot of land. There's some dignity there that that homeless people very desperately need that. I think that the Buddha j- kind of more traditionally air quotes here. Liberal solution. Does kinda miss I'm way more of a progressive libertarian when it comes to homelessness, and so so I think that's a fair not gonna record. I think where he's getting really unfairly pilloried Jess is on the. Stuff involving the police department because at least a decent chunk of it, especially the malfeasance took place before he was in office. So this is a mess. He inherited. Did he handle the inherited mess? Ideally, I think it's fair to say, no, one group of cases stands out in that one point three million. The police wire tapping case that cost taxpayers seven hundred eighty seven thousand in settlements five hundred thousand went to the officers involved fifty thousand the former chief and two hundred thirty five thousand to the former communications director, why did this choose to settle in all those different cases those case, whereas almost a crossfire of lawsuits, but the bottom line was we knew there have been a problem with violations of the wiretap act. And we also knew that the longer that that was left dangling the worse. It was for the city, and you actually look at the legal budget as a whole for the city data shows the city is spending less on lawsuit settlements since two thousand thirteen it paid out just under eight hundred thousand. And settlements in twenty thirteen dot number has declined Jennifer to less than two hundred thousand just last year. But I also think when you inherit a mess, you kind of go is this really where I wanna spend my political capital, and maybe not necessarily a big profile and courage here. But Buddha's decided no the answer was that he did not want to spend political capital there. But he has said that he now after the. Trouble started coming after firing cheek boyfriends. He understood the symbolic value of the first black police chief Lucius job, and I not great when you're supposed to be the Boy Genius them. Now what I'm saying rates and. I'm sure that he looked for another black police chief to replace this, man. Maybe he couldn't find one. That's a shame. But it doesn't look good. If you don't know the fats in even if you do Nova fats, which is that this particular chief may have violated the wiretap act. That's what people were member..

"So that was one thing we find out, and then another was that it turns out there was another. Incident involving police with racial overtones the following year. And according to the head of public safety, the board of public safety for the city of south bend at the time city attorney was fired by mayor Buddha judge for failing to block a request to have the Indiana state police investigate that incident. So kind of big overarching themes, but there was there was a lot more. I heard while I was in south end as well. As as I'm sure you saw the article. Okay. So I want to be clear about a couple of things first of all TR D investigates, objective reporting arm of TY T. And so this report. Going to south bend talking to sources, he talks about sources some of them are named some of them are confidential and an intern of Buddha. Just roll it appears to be the cover up, and it is really disconcerting. So and is going to give you some of the details, but just to build off of what Jonathan said didn't he's not only are managing editor. But he happened to report on this particular story. So when then this is the official excuse in the documents that we found. Hey, Lou were worried that if you find out how racists are cops are that he could impede prosecutions. Well, I would want it to impede prosecutions if the prosecution's were tainted by racial prejudice. So I think you should look into this civil rights activists should look into this. I mean that is a very poor official excuse to give. And now they can say, well, I mean, we didn't mean the ones that are exculpatory. Although certainly sounds that way we meant, hey, we don't want to interfere with an ongoing police investigation, but that was years ago. Yes. No more ongoing police investigations. So what's your excuse for covering up the tapes? Now, this story is super strange because it all started with the communications director for the police department coming across the tapes where the police officers were saying allegedly saying racist things about the police chief at the time who was south bend. I African American police chief has name was Daryl boykin now thorough boykin was made aware of this. And at some point the communications director was fired. And then these tapes weren't made public. Okay. But they were part of an investigation at that point mayor peak. It's elected he comes into office. And he starts to encourage there'll boyfriends to step down to resign again. This is the black police chief and the. Reason for asking him to resign was that he was allegedly threatening his subordinates, although that wasn't ever proven and boykin I said that he would step down. And then he said, no, I'm not going to step down. I'm not going to resign and then Buddha judge demoted him. Okay. So that was an interesting thing that happened in the very beginning. Tim shovel Wong history. The recording the cops for a legitimate reason. And then they forgot they were recording them and they kept on recording them, right? And then when the tapes were discovered the claim by the people who were against the police chief was that he was using the tapes to maintain his power. Now, it is awfully convenient that. The tapes have a lot of racist things in them. According to everyone who's heard them and some of them directed at the police chief, and none of the racists are fired. But the black police chief is demoted and the woman who reveal the racism is fired. So you can give me a lot of excuses as to why that happened. But. It looks like every other case I've ever seen where you just hire the fire. The troublemakers who are pointing out the racism in this in the institutions and the people and the guy who made those decisions was mayor budgets. Yes. And now, okay. If this is where it gets really bad in my opinion..

2020 election could be another 1972 for Democrats

"Me. It's fascinating looking back at the nineteen seventies in as someone that has studied history, and you know, about how sometimes there's these political cycles. It's fascinating to see how what happened in nineteen. Seventy two is starting to play out a little bit now as we get close to the the twenty twenty elections. And I was hoping you might be able to explain what happened in seventy two compared to what we're seeing today. Yeah, it's interesting. The the similarities are really Erie. Basically what happened in seventy two is you're coming off an election in one thousand nine hundred sixty eight where the incumbent vice president Hubert, Humphrey ran and lost really a razor close election. And he had won basically by not participating in the primaries. You only piss in one South Dakota. We came in third, but he went a lot of delegates at the convention. So as a result that was really? In. There was really there was there was a lot of incense between between between really inflamed the liberal, but the liberal insurrectionist anti-vietnam people was forty two, gene. Mccarthy in the primaries because the won the primary supported the Johnson ministrations proliferating in Vietnam war got the nomination. So it was a result in the general election. Eugene McCarthy finally get endorsed Hubert Humphrey, the kid by saying essentially, probably the most lukewarm endorsement, you can imagine. Support Hubert Humphrey and asked him I said my and asked my supporters suffer with me. And then. Where? I mean, I don't know. I don't know if you can take an endorsement that's a lot to try to fit on a button. But I'd I'd wear that. But that's funny. And then what happened was so after sixty eight from Richard Nixon Republican beats Humphrey, and then you have the scenario where you McCarthy who was the only really anti Vietnam war candidate really galvanize Westport among them by nineteen seventy-two Nike seventy one seventy two the there's a seismic change in the Democratic Party at moved to the left and the Vietnam war now, even Hubert Humphrey was running again opposed to be Warren called for termination of all troops in south East Asia. So now, gene McCarthy just one of many candidates matter of fact, pretty much majority of candidates were now opposed to be at Phnom results. You've lost that issue in seventy two. He runs again and Hubert Humphrey runs again if he kind of the establishment candidate. I mean, you haven't this time around you have George McGovern though, because he was seen as more galvanized into the anti Vietnam war can't war insurrectionist, so Israel, real key. Who was two hundred one at the beginning when nomination gene McCarthy is an afterthought only win three. Point six percent of the of the vote the popular vote among the democratic primary winner primary contested. And as a result, you have George McGovern winning the nomination then going onto lose miserably in the general election only winning one St. Massachusetts. Phone South Dakota. He and he wanted to why he knew the district Columbia. What's interesting is you see it very similar Somme or today because in two thousand and sixty in sixteen Hillary Clinton won the nomination, despite the fact that a lot of Bernie Sanders supporters felt cheated win a lot of the leak memos. Catchy note that Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairman of the Democratic Party had tried to basically basically worked rigged the system for Hillary Clinton results in the general election. Bernie Sanders did come out he did support Hillary Hillary Clinton. But now, you have the scenario we are a lot of Bernie Sanders positions for Medicare for all for example, for a single payer for healthcare for breaking up the corporations breaking up, the big bang and democratic socialism. A lot of those issues are now the mainstream the Democratic Party taxing the rich Camille, the Harris, for example, was moved to the left on MIR. Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts running the scenario. Bernie cares. Not the only liberal alternative to the more. Moderate establishment, the Democratic Party. And it'll be interesting to see if he can. A lot of the people over somebody like Tulsi Gabbard from Hawaii. I'm a lot of others are now running is progressive. No, there really aren't very many New Democrats. Never Bill Clinton ran down a crowd of moderate democrat. There really aren't now we have Mary where everybody's essentially moving to the left and Bernie Sanders is just you know, it's just one choice of many lip pretentious liberal candidate. You only see a couple of very few New Democrats. You have the Beto veto from down from Texas who lost Iraq Iraq, you lost to Ted Cruz. You also have some people are talking about in south bend, the mayor Buddha judge Judy judge. Yup. Yeah. He's also someone that's kind of like fresh blood for them. But other than that, you see a lot of the same names coming up people are like crossing their fingers Joe Biden runs again, which is fascinating too. Because you know, he he sat out, and obviously if he would have ran during this last election that would have really complicated things you throw him into the mix with the Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders popularity going on the one I would look to to when I think when he does. And now somebody who if you're looking for somebody who gets votes in red states. Steve Bullock in Montana's, a very interesting candidate because he was just reelected in Montana by four points the same election when Donald Trump won by twenty five twenty point and got about twenty five percent of Trump's supporters. If he's one candidate could make that general election case, perhaps. But of course, right now. He's known as Peter Budaj Jagan, you know, some of the other. Yeah. And big part of this too. Is that it's you're looking at a Donald Trump that's going to run in a lot of times. You are curious. What are the odds that he gets elected? So he's got a lot in his side right now, the fact that he's the sitting president adds a lot of favor to him being reelected. You see historically speaking that seems to help pave things a little bit. But even if you look at some of the polls coming in and you look at some of the people in Vegas when they set the odds, they're still setting him as the by far favourite. And I think that when you have a crowded democrat field in you don't know who's gonna come forward on that side that also hurts the Democrats costs us because they don't have like one person they can rally behind right now. In the case of the Republicans are kinda worked in their favor. Last time you saw Donald Trump rise to the very top in a lot of people were reluctant because they didn't want him to. But he's still didn't regardless. I don't know if there's any democrat that could rise like Donald Trump did during this last election. Yeah, it's interesting because if you're looking for somebody like that. Donald trump. And you're looking for somebody who basically people would not be thinking of right now the one candidate. I'm not sure she can win. But the one candidate. I think you're gonna see. Well, we'll surprise a lot of people. It's healthy gabbert the congresswoman from Hawaii simply because she's running. It's kind of a younger version of Bernie Sanders. This is somebody who was the co-chair who had worked Democratic National Committee lifetime, actually resigned. Her post may end up supporting Bernie Sanders because you're supposed to technically be neutral what she has a lot of other candidates. Don't have EPA episode and non interventionist foreign policy, and that's something that has peeled really across the political spectrum. Remember when Ron Paul ran, for example in two thousand eight and two thousand twelve a lot of liberals who didn't Mike is positions. A lot of other things like position on being a non interventionist and TC only can it in the field that emphasize Matt right now. So I can see her really taking a play for that type for a lot of example, a lot of independent voters. A lot of liberal voters. Who think Bernie Sanders is perhaps a little bit too all a little bit more charismatic? That's the one that I would watch. And as I say. That's deep. Bullock, the governor Montana. If he does run I do think if you look at these polls that show what Democrats want more than anything else. One AD logical. Purity is an eastern buddy who I think can make the case that you look I've gotten elected into red state interested state, I've been relatively progressive governor of expanded Medicaid expanded gun control. I've I've supported campaign finance reform. He can potentially make that case. It's kind of like Bill Clinton in ninety two. He certainly wasn't the favorite of a lot of Democrats who thought that you know, who I think would would grabs in heart wanted somebody like Jerry Brown or Tom Harkin or someone who's more liberal they closed Bill Clinton because they've not a power for twelve years. He he could win votes in the conservative state of Arkansas and Bill Clinton got the nomination that time and tarp emphasizing that I think there could he could potentially move up those the two candidates. I'm kinda watching right now, then you really haven't had much name recognition back and see where they can make an
