Then Saturday morning we made it to the long holiday weekend, everybody September 3rd, 2022, partly to mostly cloudy overnight early morning, not quite as cool, lows in the 60s and 70s, 73 right now. I've been lately thank you for taking this along for your weekend morning ride, chopping the local stories we were looking at for you heading into this one 8 hour. Will it mean a shorter wait for your next train the question that we begin this hour with this morning metro, we're told Al can start getting ready to put those more than 7000 series railcars back on the tracks again. It's been a slow, painful process we know to get there, keeping more than half of its railcars off the tracks for a time. Starting September 12th metro can increase the number of 7000 series railcars being used in service from 8 to 20. According to a new plan approved by the Washington metro rail safety commission. But that's only if metro follows a revised process being put in place governing their return. There are elements that relate to what the trains are doing on the tracks. And then there's elements that relate to making sure that the safety aspects of the inspections that are one of the key mitigations, but not the only mitigation in the plan, are properly being carried out as well. And max Smith is a WMS spokesman, metro will announce how the additional railcars will impact your train schedules next week. John dome in WTO P news. And there's also some good news for drivers who take I 66 in Virginia, the first phase of I 66 express lanes should be open sometime next weekend. The 9

"9 O three Monday morning may 16th could be scattered showers this morning but then storms later ties in the low to mid 80s Good morning and Bruce Allen And I'm Joan Jones and the top local stories we're following this hour you can expect some new delays if you take metro's green and yellow lines today It's because we have learned nearly half of metro's train operators are not up to date on required training 72 of them are being temporarily removed since they're more than a year behind in their recertification Dick giuliano begins our team coverage The wait times between trains on the green and yellow lines are jumping from 15 to 20 minutes because of the sudden shortage of train operators The Washington metro rail safety commission which oversees metro safety discovered the lapses and recertification Commission spokesman max Smith says almost half of metro's 500 train operators have lapsed re certifications When you fall this far behind behind by more than a year for a significant number of operators that raises a safety concern Metro says the impact will be felt until the end of the month Certainly there's growing frustration among commuters but many say at this point the long delays on metro rail are normal for them After the first train took off from the Huntington station here in Alexandria the next one didn't depart for.

Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland institute ‘stay-at-home’ orders

"Order now we turn to Virginia WTOP's Max Smith Max just tell us first of all what is this order from the governor today do not Brandon it specifically says all individuals in Virginia so remain at their place of residence there are some exceptions but essentially the gist of this is that governor Northam is hoping the people who have not listened so far to the need to stay at home stay apart in slow the spread of this virus will listen now with this tougher titled order although like I said there are still some exceptions right and is there going to be I mean in in Maryland governor Hogan mentioned that people in this will be enforced he will be charged with a misdemeanor did governor Northam say anything along those lines yes so the penalty for violating this order just like the penalty for violating a governor Northam other orders is up to a year in prison because it's a misdemeanor and so in it's a little bit of a lower fine in Virginia and Maryland but it is it is the same idea you could theoretically face an actual criminal charge for violating these orders there are these exceptions to the orders if you need to go out for a central reasons like if you need to get food or if you need to go to the pharmacy or you need medical care or if you need to take care of but another family member who needs medical care but you still want to limit those trips even if you are qualifying under an essential reason and the governor Northam says that's really the point is to try to slow the spread of the virus now governor Hogan decided to a an outbreak and a senior facility and also other clusters in Maryland what what prompted governor Northam to to issue this at this time the primary things were two things one is wanting to be coordinated with the neighboring state so for Virginia that includes North Carolina Maryland and then they've been working with DC mayor Muriel Bowser as well and then they they're in touch with West Virginia but it's not quite to the same level the secondary thing is governor Northam saw all of the people out on the beaches this weekend particularly down in the Hampton Roads area who were not just out there like you're still going to be able to you which is just walk you know maybe running in the sand or fishing by yourself but they were hanging out in large groups and Northam said as I'm a doctor himself an army doctor who's been in these mass casualty incidents he kind of felt it in his heart this was putting those first responders the medical providers the EMS all of those people at a higher risk because it's speeding up the transmission of this virus and risking that this peak is beyond what Virginia can handle they are still preparing and trying to add more beds Mary Washington hospital in Fredericksburg area has set up an extra facility they're talking to the army corps of engineers about extra hospital beds but they would like to not need them or if they need them they would like to have the ones that they need available and so the key is that governor Ortom is now sort of taking this personally it feels like and lastly may access I I suspect no one really knows the answer to this but how long is it expected to last this order well yes no no obviously no one knows exactly how long but governor Northam order specifically says it lasts until June tenth unless otherwise amended or superseded governor Hogan's order is indefinite they didn't put a timeline on it but it lasts as long as the health care emergency is in place all right Max thank you very much WTOP's Max Smith on governor Northam stay at home order issued
