"Most anticipated knowledgeable guest of the week. As we have promoted this segment right here on the cue card, matched income, of course, a university of Alabama. Hang on. Yeah, there's a G in there. Mcelroy was a previous case. Of course. You did the a and M game the other day. So give us, we'll get to state in a second, but what's going on with a and M's offense? I think they are wondering the same question. What's going on with our offense? We going in last week, there's a big gap there, right? We're a nice Smith used to be. You can't just plug and play. And so even when talking to the coaches, it's so how are you going to fill that void? Significant boy in your passing attack. Well, we'll have guys step up. And we talked about this in the broadcast and people have taken exception to this. They're crazy young football team. An excuse is nothing, but it is a reason. And we got to keep in mind too that these are actually, there are kids out there that are playing this game and a lot of them are freshman true freshman sophomores. And when I look along the lines of scrimmage, whether it should be this way or not, is of no consequence. It is. These guys are freshmen and sophomores. And when you watch them, you're going, these guys look like freshmen and sophomores, especially along the defensive line where there's gaps that aren't filled and when they are filled like a run fit, for example, they just get bounced and where a veteran player would be able to anchor down or at the very least tie up the lineman. They just roll up and you're worried about knees getting blown out. They're playing like they're as young as they are. All that say on the offensive side of the ball, they don't protect very well. They have not run the football with any consistency. There have been flashes and Devon a chain remains one of the greatest threats offensively in this conference. It's just a matter of diversifying the offense enough to where you don't know he's getting the ball all the time. And in the first half versus Mississippi state, it wasn't like you could just predictively think that, but you could absolutely anticipate it and it would make sense. Try to get the ball to number 6 because the other guys have an emerged enough to work. Where else would you want to go with the football? And now they've got an issue at quarterback, max Johnson left that game. It's a mess in that I don't know what mainstays you have offensively that you could actually start saying okay. You did this well for this many weeks. Let's build out from there. Well, you had hangs king and then you had max Johnson and now you're back to Haynes king and you had a nice Smith and now you don't and now it's basically the eye of the storm is Devon a chain and maybe you start snapping it directly to him. I don't know because at this point I don't know what else what they're going to do. So you head to Alabama, we'll get to their offensive issues in a moment, but you know the Alabama defense. You've seen them. Yes, what happens on that side of the ball? A and M is going to have to work hard and maybe even pray that they are highly successful and first and second down. What they demonstrated versus Mississippi state was that they don't hold up in protection. The few times that they did, they actually did operate relatively well, especially in the passing game. Max Johnson actually delivered some footballs downfield when he had time. But then you think about the proposition that they will be faced with. And the Alabama defensive front and what I would think to be one of the most imposing from a personnel standpoint and scheme, frankly, in college football, you're hard pressed to find a better one. And I'm talking about with just their down lineman players. When we're talking, you've got Dallas Turner, brass will and will Anderson junior out there. I had to pause. I couldn't think of the kid's name. God, what is that guy's name? You have them out there on the field at the exact same time. This ain't in front has had a hard time deciphering their own protection much less winning the one on one battles. It's not a winning formula. Now you'll have a mobile quarterback in Haines king, so that might help you some. But this is a formidable scenario that they're facing offensively from Maggie perspective. We're getting a mixed bag of opinions on Georgia. The consensus, though, some people are a little concerned, but the consensus is don't worry about them. I want to know what your thoughts are. I would say that two performances in a row, that's cause for concern. There's times when you're going, that's anomalous. It's a non conference vote. We did the Kent State game. We're watching it. We're going, you know what? There was probably three touchdowns on that field that they dropped. Literally dropped. It probably changes things. You don't fit a wide receiver screen well, et cetera. But then you face Missouri on the road, and you put literally play to the extent where the crowd actually gets into it versus taking them out of it. And the run blocking, which I'm very, I'm very slow to judge in that regard, because I know for a fact, you can run the football well statistically and block poorly upfront. It can happen. Pop a couple of long runs, a quarterback scrambles, whatever. Somebody looks at the box score and said, oh my gosh, she rushed for 220 yards. Yeah, our quarterback was running for his life because we didn't protect, well, and we popped a couple of nice long runs. And next thing you know, the offensive line played well. The inverse is also true. You can run the ball poorly statistically and block your tail off front. I watched this game and they were sloppy. This was a sloppy performance up front. And by that, I mean, you could not point out a single performer or performance where you're saying, okay, this guy probably graded out as with a winning grade. Each guy kind of took their turn, but they took their turn multiple times. And they did it in ways where, so the good part and the bad part is, for Georgia, at least offensively in the run game and all the concerns around that. Is they would do it right on some snaps. So that's encouraging because now I know you can do it. What's concerning is then you would do it poorly on other snaps. And the question is, what changed? What changed? Do it just like you did this time and will be better. We might not be perfect, it really is. But for sure, don't do it this way. You don't be leaning over your toes. You know, don't put your hat on the wrong side when you're trying to reach a player and the guy just slips off and makes the play. I mean, there's nothing new under the sun, right? The blocking techniques are very similar to what they ever were before. And you clearly know them because you just did it four or 5 plays ago, so just do it again. And what they had the other night was a coordinated, an uncoordinated effort to somehow diffuse whatever momentum they could establish offensively. Stetson Bennett didn't play well the other day. He not only were his passes inaccurate, but also you could look and see and you're going, you're missing some reads. Part of that was because he was getting his head knocked off. So the game plan it looks like to me Paul was Missouri said, you know what? We'll just be aggressive. We're going to come after you, especially in the obvious passing downs. They got in the red zone and they're playing cover zero a couple of times and it's like, we'll take our chances. And it worked out. We'll get to you before you can make the right decision. They got a guy. Kirsch Jackson standing wide open right over the football for a touchdown, but stetson Benson pops so many times and he's got pressure from both edges that he ends up throwing the ball to, I think it was Dylan bell and got a PI, but it's a touchdown if you go somewhere else, but by then he's been popped so many times.

"You were listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. Welcome back to our show to appreciate it very much. Let's get to more phone calls at 855-242-7285 and Sheila is up next. Hello Sheila. Hey, hey, hey, Paul, how's it going today? We're doing great. Thank you. Good, good. My husband says we're all boiled fans in the SEC. We can't cut a coach slack. Two games in, we want to get rid of every coach in the SEC with a replacement. So he told me to back off heart and I said, why? What do you think? You know what? I don't. Know, I think Carson is really doing this to himself. I don't think it matters what you think or I think or your husband thinks for that matter. Well, at the end of the day, what do you think about, okay, we got that squared away. I think the SEC says, you see, you know where you're coming. And if you don't like your producer said, you better ask somebody and you better ask them quick. And it's nothing personal. Is it Paul? No, I mean, listen, this is a league where you're hired to win football games. You're not hired to make excuses. You're not hired to be clueless after two years and still trying to figure out what your philosophy and identity is, it's win or get lost. And it's really as simple as that. Yeah. Last thing on the O line, the quarterback TJ Finley is out there tweeting and he didn't say the line was the problem, but he said, hey, just don't blame all these quarterbacks. You know, we only work with what we got. And that's what I read to it. That's my personal opinion. What you think? Yeah, listen, I think he's frustrated. And I think I don't think it's hard to read between the lines, especially right, right. I mean, I translated it as why is my son involved in a two quarterback system? Right. Well, thanks for the call share. There's no nuance in this. I mean, we can not like we're talking about P wave football here. We're not. This is serious stuff. And that's why we care about it so much. Justin is an Oklahoma. Hello, Justin. Hey, how's it going, Paul? Very well. Hey, I'm just going to address that a and M fan that was on earlier. I know someone else already kind of said it. Obviously, you could see that he was coming from a point of emotion any way you look at it and app state loss at home is not doesn't look good at all. But I'm a big hogs fan. So looking forward to this week, I wasn't too impressed with the way a and M played against Miami. And I was really impressed with the way Arkansas played against Missouri state in those first two and a half quarters. But talent wise, one on one matchup, who do you think has this game this weekend? In Arlington. Yeah. I mean, I'm trying to not let emotions get in the way. And so what I'm going to, I'm not avoiding your question either. I know that sounds like I am, but I don't know yet. If I wasn't going to the game, I would probably have a better feel, but sometimes you really want to get out there, which I will tomorrow and talk to people who maybe know more than I do. Right now, I think there's a slight edge toward maybe Arkansas, but I'm going to see some a and M people tomorrow and that's what I'm holding my horses for. Right. Yeah, I agree. And I think it'll be a close game, but I wouldn't be surprised if just based off what we've seen max Johnson last week, you know, he didn't, he looked mediocre at bass. I'm not saying he couldn't look real good with our secondary back there. But I think Pittman, the interview before was good. And I think he's going to get things turned around on that secondary issue and I think we control the game with our offense. I'd say we, but the argument. Saying to himself, you know what? We got out of the last week with what I wanted to get out of it. I didn't think my guys would take it that seriously. And I didn't think they would take it. Or play as poorly as they did either. Let's continue with more phone calls and Bruce is up next in Florida. Hello, Bruce. Hey, Bo. I just want to call. I just wanted to come because it seems like everybody giving Florida chance. Why should they? Because we've won two games. Anthony rich is fancy. This is not an issue. And you'd have to do more than that to convince me why they're going to win this game. Well, Arkansas could have lost their game last week too. I mean, that's just football, Paul. Anthony's portrait. Two very difficult games as Florida was. And Florida has excuses. Well, I got to move for an identity right now than Florida does. Well, I'm going to give you a million knife years game plan. I talked to the mansion and he says, what he's doing to do, the team is just going to march out, get on the 50 yard line and lay down because nobody's giving them a shot. They can't, that's what they deserve. Florida doesn't deserve any more than they're getting and by the way, he can say whatever he wants to his team and that's exactly what I would say too, but if you're being realistic and I realize upsets happen, but there's no realistic reason to believe the large is going to win the game. And I'm not, listen, I'm well aware of the tradition of this game. I don't need anybody to educate me, and I'm sure I'll get an education tomorrow on Saturday about how far to always win this game. But things change. David is up next. David door right ahead. I just knew you'd have me next, Paul. How you doing? We're doing great. Good, Paul. Check this out, man. And can you talk to this guy? And I know what the point spread is and all this that and the other, but I've been watching Tennessee football since he schueller, junior year, hearing. 16 out of last 17 years, these we have, we've been beat, but we've almost been begged to give them a win. So many times, you know, it just drives me, so I'm headed out of Charleston Paul. I love tomorrow I'm going to Knoxville, I've made an errors hall. It crack of dawn, raising hell. And anything other than a win is unacceptable. I don't care to point spread. If these kids don't know the magnitude and the gravity of this situation, you know, just another week when I'm going to approach it the same week and we're going to do fundamentals and all this stuff we're talking about nonsense, man.

"And we certainly probably should call him because he will do what you don't want to do because you're too much of a good Samaritan. Let me talk about something else that we do want your comments on because so we talked to Billy Napier last week in Atlanta and there's a lot of optimism that typically there's always those who are finding a storm in every port you've been down there a lot. You know you know this man by now what should we expect? Well, it's hard to know anything before you play a football game. So I don't want to overstate anything, but watching coach Napier the way his mind thinks the way he prepares and every aspect of what you could imagine and then some and the staffing they have an incredibly impressed, I think he has built an incredibly positive culture along with high level of accountability. And those are two hard things to do. It's hard to build a kind of a collegial upbeat friendly environment and also have accountability and be a share of when needed. I think the attendant to detail that the people that are there that the coaching staff they brought in, I'm very impressed at this point. I have more than I have in the past. I've been able to be involved and done some things there and work in some of the team. And so I'm really optimistic, you know, it's a tough tough conference to be in and the SEC east is a tough place to play. But I'm really looking forward to the season and I'm very happy that Billy Napier is our coach. Describe what you have seen so far of Anthony Richardson and how can he do what everyone expects him to do as the spotlight will burn bright on him in a couple of weeks. Yeah, I mean, the biggest challenge I think for him is the expectation level is off the roof. But I think it's there for a reason. You know, you see his talent, it's shown through a lot of athletically. But you also look at the throws he's made, and if you really look at the film and watch how his processing information even last year in the games, you can see at least in my opinion a high level thinking quarterback with some very good skills. And so translate that to this year with more coaching with being the start of kind of the man going into it, I think the sky's the limit and what I'm hearing, which is really encouraging is how intelligent he is as a player and how smart he has been picking up the offense and so you put all those things together and you do have high expectations. I'm really looking forward to watching him play. Danny always a pleasure to have you on. We will continue this conversation and we're not going to let you off so easy about the Florida Georgia game the next time. Be well. And so great to see you. Thanks, Paul. Take care. Danny whirl. One of the literally all time legends, both on and off the field. We'll take a short break back with your phone calls right after this. You are listening to the Paul fine bomb show podcast. And welcome back. Matt is up next. Burger, how you feeling, mister Paul pond bomb. Matt. I was gonna talk to you about Texas a and M today and our topic when we talk to you guys about. Okay. So I don't think the quarterback rain in this year, people shouldn't jump the gun and say it's going to be max Johnson when we don't know who in Corvette says you're going to be this year predicting him, you guess what you want, but in the day, we're not the coach. He makes that decision. Oh, this is fan. And I wanted your thoughts on that as well. Well, it's always the case, Matt, fans are heard on shows like this, but they're not listened to by patients. "Middle linebacker at 220 pounds. And listen, Nick Saban's going to forget more defense than I will ever know. But toe to toe hasn't had one positively graded season ever. And not one aspect of his game is graded out positively at the end of a season ever. Whether it's run defense, tackling pressure and in coverage. The other area that needs some positive regression is situationally. Alabama allowed a shade below four points per trip inside their 40. That was barely inside the top 60 in the country. There's also three projected top 25 offense on bamboo schedule and all three are on the road. Yes, their defense is going to be damn good. I just wonder if battle and Anderson can produce at a historic type level again, and then I do wonder about the interior of the defense with some guys that are a little bit lighter getting moved into a little bit larger of a role and then if Henry toa can kind of hold things together in the middle with his slight frame and we've seen him. He's tough. He plays with injury, but he's not like the greatest player. So that would be my alone concern for Bama's defense. Rightful favorites. To win the national championship ahead of Ohio State and Georgia and your estimation. Yeah, and there was one book out west made, I think, a little bit of an error in their national championship price and that got smacked accordingly. I won't mention, but one book opened them plus three 25 to win the national championship and now all the sharp shops are dealing about plus a dollar 95. Yeah, numbers come down, considerably over the last couple of months. So when you look at Alabama, it's national championship or bust and a rare year for the crimson tide to play with a chip on their shoulder coming up short in the national title game last year against the Georgia bulldogs. If Alabama is going to be knocked from its perch in the SEC west, a logical team to potentially replace them if it's not this year, maybe in coming years would be the squad hailing from College Station. And that, of course, is the Texas a and M aggies, whose wind total is 8 and a half, you do need to lay a dollar 75 to go over at FanDuel sportsbook. They find themselves that at 18 to one to be SEC champions. And when you look at the arrows, all of them are trending up in College Station, beat Alabama last year for flirted with playoff inclusion, a top recruiting class, four top 8 classes in the last four cycles for Jimbo Fisher and companies. And I think when you're looking at the ceiling for this team, 2022 may be a year premature, but the roster has just 11 seniors on it as of now. The future clearly bright for what could go on at Kyle field in the years to come. You know, listen, it's time for Jimbo's offense to kind of pick up the slack here. And start being a little bit more consistent. And you look at the production through four seasons a and M, Jimbo's had two offenses finished top ten in schedule adjusted efficiency and two offense is finished outside the top 30. He continues to run a complex pro style scheme that operates at a snail's pace. So there's nothing overly innovative here. It feels like a really important year for a and M and Jimbo. I mean, he's coming off the number one recruiting class. It's a historic type recruiting class. So he continues to win that section of college football. But now you just need to get over the hump. Everything I am hearing is max Johnson will be the main under center. Haines king didn't have a great spring and was absolutely horrific in the spring game. Max Johnson proved he was a threat with his legs as soon as he stepped on campus. And if that's the case, he's the far superior thrower. What stands out to me about max Johnson when he was kept clean nearly an 80% adjusted accuracy rate at LSU, but LSU's offensive line was horrific in past protection, the receiver group was banged up and lost its best in boutte early in the season. Not the fairest way to gauge max Johnson with those two elements in my mind. Now, don't get me wrong, like max has some things to clean up. And as a lefty, he struggles to throw left, which is a little bizarre to me. He is much better planting, driving, and throwing down the middle into the right, whether it's intermediary or deep. Max was also a fantastic using play action, one 23 passer rating that was fringe top 15 mark among qualifying quarterbacks from a pro style system, I would think Jimbo implements that a little bit more for him. Again, max Johnson really hasn't proven to be great, but he's certainly an upgrade over what Jimbo had to work with last season. A and M was horrific through the air. They lacked an ability to push the ball downfield. That's why there was such a dichotomy in passing success rate versus EPA per pass. The offense had zero pop. I think we're going to see more downfield passing from a and M. Situationally, Jimbo's offense struggled. They had trouble converting quality possessions into points and finishing drives in the green zone, couldn't stay on the field on late downs either, so some things that need to be fixed a little bit situationally. Past that, Evan Stewart has been all the rave. He has a chance to break the Jimbo mold. And that is that Jimbo has had a tough time developing highly rated receiver prospects. Stewart could finally be that guy that fixes that poor reputation of receiver development. The true freshman has been running with the first team since practice one. You'll Keith Brown had a huge spring. He's going to take over the slot rule. Anaya Smith just got popped Wednesday morning for a DWI. Had a weapon and a few ounces of weed, we'll see how that plays out. I know he was going to be used more as a gadget guy this season. And then you're hoping chase lane and Jalen Preston provide experience depth, but really neither have proven to be very good. Up front, Jimbo is going to be searching for the right combination. Plenty of talent, but that talent has to start producing.

"Think it's going to be this raucous atmosphere all directed at Jimbo. How many people in that stadium and I'll be very curious to see how his obviously his team responds at that time. But based on what we saw last year, he's going to need to take care of business beforehand because it's one of the things I've written in the off season. He talked about beating as my mom has asked me to say beating Nick Saban's heinie, could you see that word instead of that in other words, you keep using us? Well, mommy said that. But it's a quote, mom. What am I supposed to do? But then I joked that he should have said the same thing about Mike leach and lane kissing. And at Sam Pittman, apparently because he's got to take care of against some of those guys, if you want that game to really count for something October 8th in Tuscaloosa. Well, and that's what I was going to ask you, Brett zorn, and joining us here from the Houston chronicle is, listen, the quarterback room for Texas a and M today is significantly better than it was at this time last year, but we still don't know what that's going to look like. And they have to beat teams they're supposed to. This is a top ten preseason caliber team. One to 85, the rosters as good as we've ever seen at Texas a and M. So what are reasonable expectations? 11 and one challenging for a playoff spot like they did two years ago, or is this a team that's closer to 8 and four incapable of beating the teams they're supposed to? I have shifted into I will believe it when I see it mode concerning this program in terms of where they are right now because and yes, I do agree with Jimbo. He had every right to make a case in Aggie certainly had a case to be the number four team into the college football program and I've said all along. It's like the only thing I've never done in this business is cover a college football playoff game or a national title game. Done the World Series and on down the line final four, you name it. And that's not on the list. Well, right now I'm in wait and see mode because I don't know what to expect either, but yes, this recruiting, obviously, especially in the past year, he's been an exceptional recruiter at Texas a and M, they never had, if I recall, if I'm getting this right, they never had consecutive top ten classes or maybe it was three in a row ever along the way. Well, I think he's already put together four in a short time at a and M4 top ten class is certainly a record around here, but as he has said as well, that needs to show up on the field. That's meet on paper. It's got to show up on field. What you mentioned about the quarterbacks easily far and away the number one storyline and angular in this off season and leading into the summer. And what I think might even go well into August, because if I had a gut feeling right now, I feel like max Johnson might be the guy. Jimbo has a habit of going out and getting guys who, you know, if you can't beat him, join them or grab them. And he did that with max Johnson, who beat them obviously for LSU last year at the end of the season in a very tight game. He's in a good battle with Conor Redmond if I start true freshman in a Haynes king who's returning from injury. So to your point, much better quarterback room than a year ago, what that means, I don't know, but I do know that Jimbo loves experience in the fact that max Johnson has all that experience of being a starter in the SEC over one season might really play in his favor. At least early on in this season. Brit zone, we appreciate it, man. Thank you so much. Houston chronicle and again, the Twitter accounts also exactly the same as the name at Brent tournament. Thank you so much, man. We appreciate it. We'll see you next week, Brian. Thank you. Absolutely. Always a pleasure to love talking with Brent. We do appreciate it. Here's the thing about a and M, and there's one other team in the SEC that I would lump into this conversation. Maybe two. That there is only one conversation.

"We are here until 7 Eastern Time and we're delighted to welcome shahan J Raja to the program interesting piece out today about quarterback rooms in college football. Who's got the best one? Alabama, probably no surprise based on one player, but some of the other ones are interesting. More of a cumulative effort than anything else. Sean, thanks for joining us. Always good to have you on the program. Good afternoon. And take us through the process on this piece. Yeah, well, thanks as always for having me. You mentioned it a little bit, but the biggest thing that I wanted to emphasize in the lead up to this piece, right? Is that this is about quarterback rooms. It's not about the best players. Obviously, I think at number one with Alabama, we didn't get the best player at number one, but death matters. You know, having a great quarterback and having nothing behind him doesn't mean as much to me as having a couple of great guys in the room where if somebody gets hurt and you feel good about it. So I think for me, it was a little bit of a surprise when you looked at some of the top teams in the country to see, you know, with the way that the portal has gone to see the way that college football has gone from a recruiting perspective and realized that it's very hard to keep multiple blue chip quarterbacks in the room at this point. And so for me, it was sort of looking and saying, who do I feel like has some guys waiting in the wings, whether they're top recruits, whether they're guys who have played before, have some experience. And again, you know, once you kind of get to the real top 5 of it, it becomes pretty difficult. Yeah, certainly Alabama, Ohio State Michigan. I want to talk about Georgia for a second because I mean, you would think this is obvious, but some people aren't so sure. We know we know it's death and Bennett is capable of. We've seen it. We know there are a bevy of blue chippers behind it. Let's talk about that first. Sure, I think that during the run to the national championship game, it's become easy to rag on stetson Bennett and what he did last year and the struggles that he had at times, but when you look at the end of the year and you look at his ranks at SEC quarterbacks, he was really good for them. He was especially good from a past perspective. You know, he averaged nearly ten yards per pass. Now granted a lot of those were off of play actions and things like that. And you can't make a comparison between somebody like stetson Bennett and Bryce young and what they're asked to do for that offense. But that's Bennett did his job at a really high level. And I think that if they don't have the quality of quarterback play, that's Bennett brought in the national title game. I don't think they win that game. So he visits a little bit more respect than I think he gets. And when you look behind him in that room, you get some really good players coming down the pipe. Brockbank group is a former 5 star player, Carson deck with somebody who definitely competed for that job last year. They've got a 5 star freshman coming in too. So they've got some talents in that room, the one thing they don't have outside of Bennett is experience. But I think that there's enough guys in that room and enough depth and enough quality pieces that if best and Bennett were to go down for whatever reason, you have to feel pretty good that Todd munk and in that group would be able to find another quarterback to step up. And the LSU, I think sometimes people forget. They know what's coming in. They forget what's already there. And a lot of experience, especially in Brent and give us the lowdown on the tigers. No question, and obviously bringing in Jaden Daniels as a transfer from Arizona state that somebody who's played three years in college football had been pretty good. And a former high four star recruit as well. So they also have two young guys that I think you have to feel pretty good about walker Howard, a kid from Louisiana coming in as a freshman, 5 star kid, really kind of seen as the next in line in a lot of ways, but Garrett and us Meyer also, you know, the son of obviously Doug mess Meyer showed some stuff last season that we've heard that the staff is really excited about him. And I know that things go a little bit differently last year. Maybe he gets to play a little bit more too. So even though they lost max Johnson who played most of their games last season, I think they have four guys who they think maybe could be real contributors for this theme. Now, we don't know who's going to start at quarterback for them right then. Like you said, miles Brendan probably in the driver's seat because he's entering a 6th year with the program. But I think that the fact that this quarterback competition is open right now is actually a pretty good sign about what they feel like they have behind them. I want to ask you about a and M because that seems to be the missing link right now. We know they have a great team. We know the recruiting, but there's still mystery about the quarterback position. What do you see? Yes, I think that with a and M, last season, they really went into the year with basically, you know, in some ways one and a half scholarship quarterbacks, right? Zach helps out a did not look ready to be playing in this kind of system. And when king went down, by the way, hinting is by no means a proven commodity either. When he went down, they really, really struggled. And they expected to have Eli stowers as a freshman could come in. He dealt with some injuries, got moved to tight end. But this year, I think they've done a great job of trying to solidify that position group. They brought in max Johnson, like I mentioned from LSU, who's played a lot of SEC games. And while we don't know if he has a higher ceiling than what he should, I think that we know that his floor is going to be much, much higher than what Zach tells that it gave them last season. And they brought in the number two quarterback recruit in the entire country and Connor wegman. So they have three guys who, again, I think that you could go to war with who I think have a chance to be really good. I expect max Johnson with his experience to probably win that starting job, but having a guy who's been in the system and having a pure talent like Conor wegman and having a guy with so much experience like max Johnson just gives him, I think, a really diversified quarterback room that I think has a chance to maybe end some of those questions about the position that they've had to pass a couple of years. Before you go, just some thoughts overall on a and M since you're talking about them because they are, I mean, you look at some of the preseason polls and they are top 5 top 6, certainly top ten. But there's still this uneasiness about them because of last year when most reasonable people thought they dodged a sure loss against wake forest in the bowl game. Where would this conversation be? Had they been slaughtered in a bowl game? We all know that game was canceled. So it's obviously the quarterback position, but beyond that, do you feel pretty comfortable about this team being able to at least to be in contention? Well, I met this comparison on another show last week. You know, I look at George, right? Year two under Kirby smart, they're playing in the national championship game. And from that moment on, they're kind of that program, right? They don't get to title caliber until year 5 or 6. But they do get into that conversation. They make new year's 6 bowls. They're in competition to win their division and win the SEC every single year. And from my perspective, I felt like we were getting there in 2020 when Texan finished the second in the SEC west, which again they had Alabama in their division. I don't fight them for that..

"And I don't mean to be rude, but I don't see that happening. So again, we've seen transfers win championships in the SEC. Jacob coker, Joe burrow, Cam Newton. This is not like a new thing. The amount of movement is new, and we have to get used to that. But I think once we get used to it, we'll realize that college football is just as great as it's always been. Our Saturdays and our favorite stadiums are just as great as they've always been. We're going to sit in the same row in the same shirt, singing the same fight song. Tailgate in the same place. It's all gonna be the same. And the fact that the quarterback transferred or the left tackle got some money from the local barbecue joint or none of these factors that we are all scared of because we're scared to change, I don't think any of it has any impact on our fandom and how we celebrate college football on Saturdays in particular in the south. So I would say best of luck to you Bo, can't wait to see what you do at auburn. Or at Oregon, excuse me. With all the new pieces there and all that Nike money, can't wait to see. Can't wait to see what happens. I think Bo nicks did something for bone nicks. And he's going to Oregon because of it. And you look at spitzer rattler going to South Carolina. Max Johnson came out of the portal from LSU to going to Texas a and M, we don't know where Zack calls out is going to go. Harrison Bailey left Tennessee this year. We've seen Dylan Gabriel go to UCLA from UCF. We've seen Adrian Martinez Lee from Nebraska to go to Kansas state. Michael pennock's Indiana, the guy who won all those games for Indiana, he's transferring to Washington. It's okay. It's just a part of the game. He's got to be used to it now. And the coaches are the ones that have to deal with all the drama. The coaches are the ones that have to figure out how to manage rosters. And you know what? They get paid 8, 9, $10 million to do that. So my bleeding heart does not go out to the college football coaches. To you fans? I don't think there's gonna be any change. And speaking of a transfer Quinn ewers, of course, from Ohio State down to Texas, Jack and Florida wants to talk Quinn years. Jack, welcome to the Paul fine bombshell. Yeah, great. Thank you very much. I watch our Greg mcelroy say that the problem with Texas football players is out. They're already developed by the time they get to college because that high school programs in Texas are so great. And then they don't develop very well after they get to a place like Texas. Now I was wondering about Quinn ewers. I saw him play in the Texas high school All-Star Game the national state championship game last year. And he looked like John Elway's arm, Dan Marino's release. He looks like an NFL quarterback already. I mean, in terms of the finesse and arm angles and arm talent strength, I was curious what you thought about whether you think or there is any discussion about whether he may already be like a finished product and maybe it's going to go to Texas and be overhyped and fall into the same ridiculous pattern that Texas football has been in for the past 30 years, which is super hyped expectations, but delivering nothing. I was just curious, what are your thoughts might be about that? Sure. Thank you, Jack. I appreciate the call. I will say, there's no way to apply this to Quinn, yours, like, individually here. I don't think that's a thing that we can do. But in general, I grew up in an interest of full transparency here. I grew up in Dallas and Austin for about 6 years of my childhood and played middle school, freshman year of high school ball in Austin and did a lot of scouting work for rivals and for Athlon sports down in Texas. And I will say that there is more investment in the development of a prospect in the state of Texas than anywhere else in America. I don't think that's I don't think I'm going out on a limb by saying that. I think Florida has slightly more talent in general. But nowhere are they more committed to the holistic football program at the high school level than in Texas? There's just no question about that. So are the players more developed? Have they had more training physically, nutrition, all that other stuff? It's absolutely possible that that's what's happening in Texas, especially compared to the rest of the country. Does that apply to quinoa? I have no idea. It's no clue if he's maxed out his potential. But that is not a, that is not an unpopular sentiment among experts and scouts that I've talked to and I've been around that will tell you that the players in Texas get more from their programs than anybody else in America. And does that mean you're fully developed and don't have as much room to grow? You know, you can point to Vince Young. It took him some time to develop. He definitely developed in the college game. And then didn't develop at all in the NFL. But again, you could pull one name and make it totally anecdotal and say, oh, this whole entire big philosophy applies to Quinn ewers. I just don't think we can do that. Is it fair to say Texas has missed on some players, mis evaluated? Hired the wrong guys, maybe recruited star rankings instead of guys they can develop me, sure. Totally fair to make that comparison. And they better fix it because in a couple years, when they joined the SEC, the recruiting and the talent and the weekend and week out grind in this conference is very different than in the big 12. So.

"With all this time in between these games. What kind of schemes and how many bullets and different defenses can you draw up to be able to throw and confuse that Mac around? That's the real benefit of having all this time in between bowl games. And from a player standpoint, every day we see more defections, that's the time of the year. If you're sitting there with an NFL evaluation pretty high and you're getting ready for all the things that come with that, what is your interest in a ball game short of the college football player? All right, number one, have we been in this bowl game before? And it is a big bowl game. Is it a sugar bowl? Because, you know, that was the upper Echelon for so many years and still is. Some of these kids have never played in it. They've never wanted if they have, I'm out. Like, I don't see why I'm doing anything else. If I don't have something to achieve highly on the high pecking order as a team, then I'm in. But if not, then I'm completely out. I'm not gaining anything. The NFL does not care about my performance in the last college football game. They don't. They got enough on tape. And now the only way I can gain or separate myself from everybody else in front of me or separate from the guys behind me is at the combine when I'm running my 40, I'm out there looking right beside my competition and going against these guys where I'm measuring against them as well. You got to LA sure what are they in the Texas? Yeah, yeah. There's some reports that they may not have enough players. I believe that max Johnson just went to trails. I don't know who they're going to play. I just hope the biggest thing is they don't waste a quarterbacks, not Myers name, I believe. His richer year. By playing him. His father was. I just hope they don't waste his rich year. They should just go and play the walk on and try and run the ball 55 times. Just do see what happens. I mean, you always hear in normal times or the coaches watching, but there's no watching of this game. Brian Kelly, he'll sit in the press box and have lunch. But he's not paying too much attention, is he? I mean, I consider prince say yeah, coaching matters and the coaches are looking like that, but are they really? Because the coach, when the first thing they tell you when they first get is, hey it's a clean slate. Everything you did before me doesn't matter. It's all about what I'm our relationship. It's a clean slate before. So, no, I'm not gonna sit up here in a lot of people Paul. And I'd be like, oh, yeah. You better be practicing hard. You better be on top of blah, blah, blah. And you better have a great trainer, those practices are good for you. But if you're a good player, you're like, I'm a good player. What does it matter? You can't replace me, right? And the ball practices matter for guys that didn't get reps during the season. Because that's the extra bold practices that you get and you get to see these young guys really start to grow up. They've been in the program for a year. They've been lived in working hard. They know the defenses. So the scrimmages at the end of practices were just as fun and just as competitive as any other part of bol practice all year. Roman Harper, you're off to doing whatever you do during the holidays. I'm enjoying myself. For the next couple of days and see what you do in your spare time. It's gonna be a lot of the house, man, with my feet kicked up. I might do a little bit of housework. My birthday is on Saturday. I do do housework. Really? Yes. I mean, don't doubt me. I'm a renaissance man. Paul, I do it all. We want to know what you do? I will, I will. You know, I just got a haircut earlier I'll be hanging out. You know, you vacuum. I do vacuum. A sweet more than I vacuum. I like vacuuming. I do too, but I sweep way too much. My wife says it's so annoying. To me, it's therapeutic. See, folding clothes in washing clothes. Follows me around. Really? I threatened to back your business. So my dog's always barking storm. She's always barking if you've got a vacuum going, so it's kind of annoying. I just put her outside. She's a bit annoying. Anything else or that folding call is vacuuming and fully closed vacuum and I plan on eating good for three or four straight days. So Paul, I'll miss you, we don't get our SEC. Yeah, it's kinda weird tomorrow without having you on our man. I just hope you continue to enjoy yourself. I just love having you on the set. I mean, you make the show Paul. Let's not get it twisted. Whenever you're actually locked in. And not on your phone or checking your slides. I had a pretty good year. I mean, if you compare this year with previous years, I am going to take credit for that. I barely touched my phone. I'm going to take some credit for that Paul. I appreciate you always staying locked in and being involved with us. Because you're the goat broke, when it comes to the people of the south, you are the gospel. So I always know if I want to get something off my chest. I need I know where I need to come with it. It's not on Saturday mornings. It's when I talk to you on Friday. Too much noise on that show. It's way too much noise. Way too much outside noise. We're just fighting for scraps. Yeah. Noise and children. Robin, you have a great birthday. You're what? You're 39. I'll be 39. 39 Paul. I'll be 39. It's a great year. I should just turn 40 twice. Just skip 39. I'm trying to remember which one of those 30 bothered me. Really? Oh yeah, because you could no longer act like you're really young. How much hair did you have at 30? I think I didn't have a whole lot more than I do now. I see people that I haven't seen a long time ago. You don't look any different. I said, because I looked this age when I was 30. So with me, I'm just hearing, you know, 40s like the new 20 and you know, now everybody hangs out. People get married way later. Everything's a lot different. So 40s no longer young. Well, not too young, but yes. I mean, I got married when I was with 33. Oh, I got married at 34. Oh, yeah, so I was younger than you, policy. I figured out before you knew it was a good thing I did. Yeah, see? You were next you know, you'd been a wild 40 year old Paul. You have no idea. I can't imagine. I can imagine. I can imagine. I could have imagined. I've never been wild. I've always been boring. He's lying to the people. He's lying. He's not at that point. Assuming I survived this choking spell, have a great birthday. We will see you appreciate it Paul. I'll be back,.

"And EPA per pass allowed. LSU's offense, checks in top 15 in both those categories. The problem is and where the Spidey senses are kind of kicking in, and I think off the buy, Saban probably gets that cleaned up a little bit, especially after you give up two 50 plus yard touchdown bombs to Tennessee, and that's probably going to put an emphasis on that area of your defense during the buy. Chunk plays through the air have been a serious problem though. And again, I think it gets cleaned up a little bit, but it isn't going to be a quick fix. It isn't going to be something that isn't a vulnerability for them moving forward. Right now, Alabama. Along 53% of throes, ten plus yards downfield to be completed. That is just not good. Not good. Not good. 9% worse than last season. 20% worse than 2019. So that is certainly going to be an area defensive back's coach. Like Nick Saban is going to try to rectify during the buy for LSU. You probably have to look at how they're trending through the air without case on but not right. Obviously, max Johnson looked good in the shootout against Florida. Despite some turnovers. But the last time out against old miss, a defense that's outside the top 100 and passing defense max Johnson put up a negative passing EPA. So you do kind of have to wait out what the LSU pass attack is without Butte and I think that makes things a little bit different here. The second area where LSU has to be effective to have a chance is actually on the other side of the ball. And Todd, I think we did a really good job identifying Alabama's protection issues week one against Miami when Bryce young basically ran for his life and just was fantastic under pressure, but that was kind of the point in time where everyone was already anointing Alabama national champions and there wasn't any weakness, and then all of a sudden you start digging in numbers like Jesus. This offensive line, which lost a ton of guys to the draft and they had issues against Miami. And we weren't quite sure what Miami's defensive line was. We thought it would be substantially down. And so that was kind of a glaring weakness for us. And right now, that really hasn't changed all that much. It's gotten slightly better. Again, maybe out of the buy, you see another notch of improvement, but Bryce young's still being pressure on 35% of dropbacks. The other area where Amazon line is really struggled this season is against the blitz. Only navy and Akron are worse and pressure rate allowed versus the blitz. So donte Jones better figure out a way to scheme up some manufactured pressure and if he can get some guys home, force a turnover, make bray young, comfortable. Maybe. Maybe this doesn't become a complete whitewash, but I will say this. You mentioned the quotes coming out of the buy, think Alabama's gonna be a little bit more buttoned up. Season long numbers make this game 28 right on the button. If I look at our weighted numbers taught, it's closer to 34. It's never a great sign when Alabama has actually been discounted in the market and you can find nearly a touchdown's worth of wiggle room, looking over current form to try and advocate for a game or normally you'd want to come in and go out, well, I'll just use catching a bowl of points, they're gonna put an all hands on deck type effort together. I haven't seen that from max Johnson and he's not exactly a 100% either. So I'm not quite sure what LSU can do other than maybe go to church a couple times during the week and hope that there's a little bit of divine intervention that allows them to cover us for a touchdown pups. Yeah, and so when that is the key factor, I max Johnson being able to move the ball through the air and he's not a 100% and as we alluded to bhutte is out. Becomes a little bit more difficult. And so those are really the only two areas. That LSU might have an advantage in some blitzes and maybe creating some turnovers, turnovers, obviously, not predictable, but can certainly swing games as we saw last week with Arizona state having three in the first 11 minutes. So those are the kind of things that completely flip games on their head. And that's what it's going to take for LSU to stay within this number. Otherwise this is going to be a boat race. And I don't see Alabama necessarily letting their foot off the gas if there is that opportunity. Because again, they'll probably be able to run the ball here in this situation. Yeah, trying to figure out what this LSU program is going to look like. I mean, we say it week in week out and this will probably be the last time that we touched on LSU football this season. When you look at their upcoming schedule, but just two years removed from winning a national championship with arguably one of the most dominant teams that we've ever seen, play the sport highlighted by NFL caliber talent all over that roster to see how far the mighty have fallen. And we'll see what program builder ultimately comes in to try and resurrect what should be one of the elite organizations from top to bottom within the SEC west. I'm not quite sure who they are. Have you heard anything? I have not leaning. No, I have not heard any further updates there. I have not heard any inkling in terms of what direction USC wants to go in either. And it begs the question. I mean, you see clay halten who already found a new job at Georgia southern. You know, if you're LSU, if your USC, how quickly do you have to move and what candidates have you identified that least you can get a handshake agreement in place that as soon as the regular season's over inside of less than a month to try and accelerate that recruiting cycle because you know better than I do that this recruiting calendar of events and cycle doesn't really ever stop. So if you had a head coach there, you could really get a leg up on the competition. You know, three to four weeks before some of your other compatriots try to make a move. Oh, there's no doubt about that. And that's part of this new early recruiting period. Day and age of college football is you constantly are shuffling your coach like we've seen in Florida state and you're going to be behind the 8 ball and we saw a couple of talented kids come out and over the past week and say what you want about Ed or geron being a good X's and O's coach and hiring the right guys, which he's fallen short of, but knocked it out of the park in 2019 and that's why they're able to win the national championship. But he is beloved by players in their parents and we've seen kids over the last week. We've seen kids that were kind of leaning that way, choose another direction because coach O is gone, so you have to solidify who the coach is going to be. Come in, do some damage control. And I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing if you have that coach that's out there and kind of the handshake agreements already in place, but I have not heard any rumblings as to that kind of being potentially solidified behind the scenes. So it'll be interesting to see which direction they go. Where do you think kocho goes from here? Do you see a situation.

"Some of the reports that i kind of mentioned there about some offensive struggles led my guys to kind of stay off the game but clearly when this reached three and a half. Someone was interested in georgia. This for me. I mean all the makings not just have a heavyweight battle. Because i think regardless of who comes out of this game with a win on their resume their opponent that comes up on the short this stick. We'll have plenty of opportunities to get themselves right back in the thick things as far as the college football playoff is considered and we talked about it previewing the after this game for clemson it is pretty much smooth sailing going forward so this would go a long way in defining the tiger season before they get into the pillow fight. That could be a lot of their acc opponents intersectional showdown pain in one of the nightcaps. It as we head out west in her what intersectional. Okay i just wanna make sure. I said it's the right way. Put your put your player pronunciations. But at least vocabularies okay. More often than not. Although that may be myself you broke up. And i just heard the latter part of that word. Well there may be plenty of that too when lsu fans get out to california so we don't we aren't quite sure first off obviously to all those lsu fans the student athletes and everybody else it's been effective. We hope families are healthy and safe. We know that obviously takes priority. Over football and lsu is had their practice schedule. Complete disrupted given the aftermath of hurricane ida. And i'm sure it will preclude. A lot of those folks were making the trip to the rose bowl that they had circled on their calendar knowing. It's the first time the program has ever gone west to play in that historic venue. But as far as what's going to take place on the football field you're looking at lsu. A field goal favorite total on this game. Sixty five against ucla. Those numbers of course. Courtesy of fan duel sportsbook. And when you begin to go through what these two teams are this season. We've obviously seen a glorified dress rehearsal for. Ucla a game where they covered with ease against hawaii last week and built a twenty four to three lead after the first quarter and pretty much took their foot off the gas michigan fans all over wondering how come we never saw that zach. Chardonnay was six carries three touchdowns and more than one hundred yards michigan. Fans at least can be a little bit understanding when you realize. It's hawaii's defense as we dig in lsu miles brennan. He was expected to be their starting quarterback a broken arm with a fishing accident. Which sounds rather fishy to say the least when he's finished his entire life but that's neither here nor there. So max johnson will be the guy. Max johnson in two games last year a gainesville and let lsu to a massive upset against florida. And wow this all with a fifty plus point performance against ole miss at tiger stadium. I guess the first question. I have for you on this game. Pain advantage or disadvantage at. Ucla now has sixty full minutes of live action under their bill but they've also had to put some things on film for lsu to prepare for. Yeah i think that's ultimately the the great question here that we might not have answers to because coming into last season. We assumed in had seen in the past that the team that got live bullets played in real game action. You would have thought had an advantage that did not happen last year and it was the team that sat out and had a chance to look at film that actually performed substantially better and so it was a small sample size but it is something to consider. And you know when you do look at lsu offensively. I think there is a little bit of a downgrade here at quarterback miles. Brennan was someone that i think intrigued a lot of people. Nomex johnson's no slouch. You mentioned that. He started the final two games last year. Went to now when you actually look at some of the things that matter. The metrics brennan was the better quarterback in just about every category from adjusted accuracy to epa per pass attempt to passer rating. You name it. And i think what. Lsu might miss here is brennan's ability to push the ball downfield accurately and that was something really surprising to me because you watch him and he was pretty impressive. Boy you just didn't really get the full scope of things until i dug into some of the numbers. Brennan was actually number one in the sec. In-depth adjusted accuracy while also having the deepest average depth of target being the most accurate while also pushing the ball the deepest down. The field doesn't typically go hand in hand you're willing to sacrifice some level of accuracy to take the shot and so that that's really impressive to me and when you do look at ucla defensively and where they were solid last year. Is that four. Two four to five defense did kind of prevent the big play. They were eleven thin explosive rate allowed. So just based on. Ucla's defensive style and brennan being out. It puts a lot of pressure on max johnson to be efficient down to down and methodically move. The ball. downfield. The weapons aren't great k sean. Bouquets gonna be a monster and he's going to step up here in a big way. He's a he's a true number one receiver. But i think there's question marks passed him with the receiver group. Lsu does return four or five starters along the online projected starter at left. Tackle der rosenthal decided to transfer out. I think they'll be okay. Cam wires kind of impressed. Guys he looks to be the starter there. It's pretty veteran group. They're not a late. And i think maybe some continuity from an experienced maybe has this unit bump up from above average to to probably pretty good. I'd expected to back system. It sounds like whether it's davis price or emory. Neither of them have really emerged as the lead back. They need to figure out thing how to get more explosiveness from those two guys. Lsu's one hundred twentieth a year ago and explosive run offense. That's just not going to cut it when you're recruiting like four and five star. Ucla did struggle in that area last year. So that is something to watch for. One hundred nineteenth in rushing success rate a lot ninety eight and stuff right ninety nine thousand line yards so ucla could be handled at the point of attack a little bit. Now that's where it comes into play with your question at the top. Todd it's like what ucla defense are. We getting the one from last year. That got bullied in the trenches or the one that dominated last week and stuff twenty-seven percent of runs adder. Behind the line of scrimmage. I would also some level of creativity from. Ucla's defense that we might not have seen last week. There just wasn't a need to do anything crazy against a hawaii offense. That was battling some things outside of football. We did project coming into the year. That ucla's defense would improve with ten guys back and there is this like feast or famine element to their defense where they wanna bullets believe they are the seven ties blitz rate in in the country last year at fifty one percent so i i would expect actually a more aggressive bruins defense something that they probably didn't have to put on film last year But they did. They got out of the gate strong. It's tough to figure out how to factor. That in. And i mean they just i mean. They held hawaii four yards per play last week. Thirty three percent success rate and they dominated in the trenches. One point six line yards allowed. I i mean. I think they improved. I just don't think they improved that level. But we're going to find out pretty quickly what that defensive front is. Are you ready to officially start drinking the dr kool-aid because when i dug into this game i'm not gonna lie. I was blown away. When i went back and looked at his recruiting class that he was a part of and realized that a kid that was locally and i probably should have known more about him obviously having played at bishop gorman he was fourth behind trevor lawrence justin fields and the aforementioned. Gt daniels ucla. Fans don't feel like they have the fourth rated quarterback in that class. But when you look at ddr he'll make some throws that really. Wow you hell show. Some flash plays with his legs that okay. This guy's got it takes his dual threat quarterback and they'll make some throws like we saw early on against hawaii last week and go. What the hell is going on. That ball wasn't even this same zip code as wide receivers. I think that's what he is at this point. I mean what is this year three or four.

Bree andress is Joining us right now and breach so many questions to talk about. And i'm so happy that you're joining us. Let's go with the biggest thing right now. What does it feel like on campus. Now that we're starting to get kids back on on campus and we're what what nine days away from. The first football game being played by lsu over ucla campus is back so much as it can be We are. We have a lot of in person classes. I have a But we do have hybrid options in online options for those students who feel comfortable. I think our president nine ministration is doing everything they can by getting people vaccinated making sure people mask and taking all the necessary precautions because i think myself included i think tiger fans everywhere wants to be integral stadium with a hundred thousand of their closest friends. You know so. We wanna have that energy and we only need to in the safest way possible and i think that everyone in charge is doing everything that they can bring. I think that's interesting. 'cause got woodward talked about that right like part of football down in the south and not just baton rouge but everywhere. It's kind of like football faith and family right. Nobody has it better than kind of tailgating in down in baton rouge With that being said how the students in the people around it reacting to the news that they will require a vaccine or at least a negative. Pcr test to attend a game at tiger stadium. How much will affect tendency believe. I think tiger fans are really die. Hard I've been a higher life. I've always been die hard. I think you know people have difference of opinion about the back seen about the pandemic in general but if that's what it takes to get a vaccine or to get tested seventy two hours before the game. I think that's what tiger fans are gonna do that way. They can go in there and cheers lot as they can for the team and hopefully get to Another national championship. I think we can't do it. Without the band's. I went to a game last year when there was limited capacity and the energy was just. It was like nine days. It was so different. So i think having all those fans are going to help the team more coaches as it all the time that the tv's off their energy. So i think having them all in there in if that's what we do is to get vaccinated and semaska. I think fans will play their part. Br how long you been in. Lsu football fan. I'm twenty years old going on twenty one so probably about twenty years all right so going back in and look at it and now you get an opportunity to do that in. What was the biggest step from you. Going from a fan in four years old to twelve years old to now twenty two going on twenty one in covering it. What is what has been the biggest difference in working on this side of the camera as opposed to just being a fan and covering the game. I think being a fan covering the team that you love it helps you. It makes you love what you do even more. I came to lsu for this program that we had four tiger tv in for the opportunities that i can get here and also four the sports team. I mean we're a school. We learn alive do a lot of education but this is a sports school basketball football baseball gymnastics. Like we're like some. We're the best in the country. I believe so going from that and be able to cover that. From being a non-bias media perspective has been a learning experience. But also it's been really fun. I've gotten a covered the my very first boarding experience covering a game was lsu. Bama twenty nineteen. In brian any stadium. We broke the eight year. Curse of losing to bama so that was a surreal moment in getting to talk to coach weekly in press conferences and getting to meet everyone that i get to meet have all the opportunities like this is something that's unmatched and i wouldn't trade it for the world so being a fan makes me love what i do more interesting because you know when old guys like me. I'm forty two years old. Double your age and i'm sitting here in charlotte. North carolina at our sec network studios and talk about name image and likeness. And all the things that are changing your boots on the ground and baton rouge and you're interacting with these student athletes in your amongst them every single day name image and likeness are everybody outside of our world. Know guys like me making this to be too big of a deal or have you seen a big change with that on campus. You know personally. I know some of the guys and stuff and i know that they do have a endorsements and stuff and i think it really helps them Boosts their confidence. Because you know they're like i'm putting in all of this work in practice encamped putting all these games and now it's paying off for me financially I know they weren't able to do that in the past so now seeing them in it also helps local businesses as well walk on raising. Cane's i know those a kind of bigger but The smaller companies that reach out into endorsement deals with them. I think it helps businesses a lot. So i think it's a win win situation you guys get To get paid for the hard work that they put an end. Their named engineer lightness and also the businesses around the baggage area. Get their promotion as well. My last question for you. You follow this team You talked about twenty nineteen. There was a buzz around this team in twenty nineteen twenty twenty different We weren't on campus. What's the buzz around this team. And how good candidate you know. That is a great question. I have thought about this team. Alive compared to twenty eighteen season We have a lot of guys coming back. We have a lot of veterans on his team in the orelon is all coming back. I do think that they need to work on the depth in the line because all the guys that we have no line on second team haven't had as much experience as first team. I think You know if elias ricksen and derek stanley junior stay healthy. They'll be the biggest threat at cornerback in the country. Both of them together. I think durant. John's coming in and bringing in some of his. Nfl experience to the bend especially that secondary will help out a lot because we know that the secondary didn't do as well as they usually do as the last year so I think that's great. And honestly i love max johnson as a quarterback i think he's a balti- move around but he moves around well in the pocket. He gets the ball. He moved with his feet. Well so i would like to see him just excel and then the wide receiver. Core is insane the freshman that we have our unstoppable of seeing them in camp and they have done amazing things also the running backs and no people have been concerned about the running backs. Well are two men guys. I david price and john emery Of them but you also have to look at those freshmen. That we have are great. They are corey. Kinder amar amartya would like they are outstanding..

"I did all right Okay that's your question about college. Football called week. Zero is saturday. We're less than six days away from college. Football and totally and i know you've tried to embrace some college football and i just wanted to yes sprinkle in a little bit and give so. Here's what i'm saying. You're mad with the salt. That's not that's not sprinkling we're doing. We're dumping salt shaker on here headline that says college football. And that's your just pouring onto much. Just take it easy. I tried to pull a little prank. Where you unscrew the saulat and keep it on and someone takes over right got too much. Napa came out what to do with this. Thank you. Thank you for deleting it now. He's type k. Thank you now that we're in the college football portion of the podcast call. Rupel push podcast. What what are what's the house to do with ohio state of the hap sinc- f. b. I just wanted to put out there. That ohio state has officially named a starting quarterback for Week one against minnesota games next on thursday night start the season. Cj stroud okay. What cj stroud deal Redshirt freshman he very little action last year. Just filled freshman means. He didn't play. He didn't play more than forty plus career. You know Love was football basketball growing up at high school and then real people are like footballs year deal and early on in his high school. Career not really highly recruited and shot up the ranks at the end. And now's gonna be starting for highest state and i'm excited. What excites you specifically about. The store i think. Cj is going to be just in general. Yes about the story i mean. Cj strobe goes through the list of that ever well talk with non-devotees the list. He just drought someone that early. On in sized carries a three star recruit shot up and then with three stars as bad for state. We're not trying to bring in three-star quarterbacks Eleven camp down in texas in the ends up winning in the same class in the same group that had bryce young who started alabama was finish better than dj lay. Clarkson say say that again. I'll repeat that. I think that's awesome. I think i just set it correct. Katie 'cause i heard you say it and then i said it that was fun and asked me to spell it. Why are you looking at me like that. say wrong. a year ago. This time i was is it depresses. I've probably ever been with the fact that i didn't know if i was going to have college football and high plane and it probably is true and now i get my starting quarterback. We have zero this week. There's a few games a couple of good ones and then next week. We're just were ready to go. 'cause football's here that's sell at sounds so exciting as so people along with lsu katie. Yes mean i. That's never within question. I've always been excuse me a lifelong lsu fan. I have rooted for those tightness. Actually lt gra at since birth I've never ridden with. Lsu only resided go. there is because i didn't apply. And and it's it's been in my family. I've got a lotta lsu merch. What's your expectations for this year. And i think they're going to be good. I think my expectations look that their their quarterback situation is unique in that it is the only one with those specific players. Max johnson out there. Max johnson is is most you know. That's i turn everything up to next. Wants to be men johnson. That's what i've always said. Who else you got heard about. Johnson and johnson was. Because max johnson. Don't worry about my my to jones. Even like i'm just trying to gather as many as i can let a live. So lsu is what i was saying. And i just think you know that offensive line. I mean what is there left to say about that offensive line. That hasn't been said. I agree and echo all of my colleagues who feel the ways that they feel about the offensive line and then you know as long as they can. They got strength of schedule as a phrase that people use a lot when they talk about college football. And you nervous about opening up against you. Ucla i've never been nervous. I've never been nervous about opening up a trojan. I can do that. They're the bruins. I got too excited by the possibilities. Going to say was. I got excited to and then i heard the california. I bet max. Johnson was excited to travis. Dot wants to. That's disgusting remaking disgusting. Joe i would never do that. Damn have some nuance No the bruins. Don't scare me. The bruins are bears. And we're gonna we're gonna lay them bare. You know what i'm saying. Look if if we want is going to be like the revenue does leo win and the revenue or does he die. Because i didn't see it ever seen it. Never you haven't seen it. That seems like such a travis movie like the take i picture you. Really liking the taken franchise ideal and john yes and then what's the new one with nicholas cage. That looks at least like it's john wick with a pig. I think it just might be called pig idea Short films a lot. A lot of artsy films. Anyway what would what else about. Lsu do you need to know. What else do you need to know how we talk to people lsu fans we say. Hey bob let's marcus spears taught me hague's cuba. It's so hard to do what. What is what is. Maybe you say you say go tigers. Will we spell it g. e. a. u. x. Don't try me don't try me. Don't you try me..

"Lsu watch his game the other night. No the second half was awful right. who's terrorist. So i mean everybody needs to improve now. The joe grady didn't call the plays at lsu as much credit as he got. It's still an art to calling a game and you have to learn how to do that. You can't just put a guy in. That's really good on the drawing board and say all right go go out and help call the some games. It's evan flow its ups and downs. You gotta have a rhythm to the game. And i think. Lsu is talented defensively. I think they will bounce back. They will be better because they were god. Awful defensively last year. So now i think defensively. It'll be better under toronto jones. I think they'll be better schematically in the back half defense not give up so many big place and that alone will give them a chance. Now the biggest question mark have is. Can they run the ball consistently inconsistent meaning on their terms when they want to run the ball. Everybody in the stadium knows that. Lsu has to run the ball here. Can they still get a first down or do it. On their terms. And also the health of max johnson without mouths brennan if max johnson goes down you right back in. The same boat lasted where. You're playing freshman quarterbacks. Just trying to piece together an offense to try and get you something out there to score some points on the week to week basis. And that's just not going to win in today's college. Football especially in the sec. Well let's go to the most talked about school in the. Sec is georgia and latest. Been for all the wrong reasons. I mean i'm. I'm afraid to check the curvy smarts again to get his foot hard pretty soon which going on there and can they overcome this in the next ten days. Well you hope so. They got the talent to do it in town. It's not going to be the issue it's about kirby has to keep this ship going in the right direction. No matter who's on it who's off of this is all we got right now. We got to continue to go forward and understand that. You've got the quarterback that can do it all you got the wide receivers that can do it. And i know eric gilbert is. We don't know where he is and we know everybody was expecting big things out of him. But now you gotta really lean on darnold washington the tied in and not just a block or like a guy. I need him to be guy needs to be tied in. Sec if you're going to compete because outside of your two receivers jemaine burden and cures jackson. I mean you've really don't have any other production especially with lease losing pickens your best one. So i'm really looking forward to this offense how they continue to improve in defensively all the secondary pieces that they lost. It's easy to say that. George is going to be good because kirby smarts defensive guy and the defensive backs is his baby is but you still have to go out there and prove it to me on saturdays. You have to go out there and get it done. And i didn't want to talk about alabama. But but i want to ask you about them because i just a you you you for your from there you played there and i have watched this program for a million years and never i'm talking fan. I'm talking to the players. I've never talked to the fans. Were there was just no in between. I mean alabama is going to win every game but one hundred points and the national championship is in the bag. Why why why should i not believe. This should just go ahead. And just put the money down in alabama. As i always. Do i think you if you're a betting man you should. You should definitely push the betsy. What happens you better get it. You'll get better right now than you would later on the season there. Eight knows so you better get it now. That's a good point. So and you're right paul. We should just go out there and pick alabama every year and to prove is because if not i just call see myself doing it all the time and i really believe that george is going to be better than alabama this year or am. I just tell them myself that because eventually the odds say that they're going to lose one of these games are we just playing mental gymnastics here and just making it up or is alabama's just gonna continue to dominate that. Like no other. We've ever seen in any other conference. Either it's just. They continue to win. They continue to dominate. And no matter who they lose coach or player there in results still remains the same and as long as nick savings there. They're going to win and they're going to recruit at a high level and they're going to coach them up. I mean you look at the way. He just called out a billingsley this past week and he's a great player and it doesn't matter how good you are if you don't do things for the right reasons at the right time all the time you won't play and it doesn't matter about it in the competition is is such a high level that it pushes all the players to remain that. Hey the knick said he's i guess. This is not a dictatorship. This is democracy. It's on you to call nick. I don't think.

"A timeline for his return from the injury to his non throwing arm is as of now still unclear. Byles brandon lead lsu to a one two record last season before suffering a season injuring injury versus missouri. Max johnson on the other hand to know starter for the tigers recording a touchdown to interception ratio of eight to one so we expected a battle. Now we're not going to get that battle in. It raises the question of. What's next at the quarterback position greg mcelroy. How much pressure is there. On max johnson. Now that he's essentially been handed this job well stepping into shoes like starting quarterback at lsu. There's always going to be pressure. But i would actually say the pressure has been lifted significantly. Now knowing that he doesn't have to share reps he can focus exclusively on himself without having to look over his shoulder and potentially getting replaced. I think when a quarterback doesn't have anyone pushing in behind him then there's no pressure there go out there and sling it and if you throw four picks five picks yeah it's not ideal but hey guess what. We don't have anyone better so go out there. Play freely and do everything you can to just not worry about anything other than your own performance. So i think there's no pressure and the fact now that he's going to get every single first team rep to prepare for the season. He's going to come in more prepared. Because you're gonna come in with better chemistry with as wide receivers and i also think too. He's going to put them in a position. I think early in the year to get off to a good start and probably surprised people. Because that's a talented roster guys that i feel pretty good about and i don't think enough people are talking about so harry. Let's stick with the pressure conversation but from a different angle. Right like coach o. Came into a national championship season under some pressure wins at all that changes but last year was a disappointment. How much pressure going into this season is there on ores era. I do think that there is a measure of pressure you know. Obviously the pandemic season was difficult for everybody and they just had an atrocious defense. Got your defensive coordinator. Switch there obviously with both leany out but you know having the national championship season. That they had twenty nine thousand nine especially. That was one of the best college football teams we've ever seen right. We all know that his sports that buys you a lot of good faith that buys you more time things of that nature. But i do think that this is a big season for him and i do think that something else that we have to consider. Here is the allegations against him that he handled sexual misconduct allegations that were brought to him improperly or poorly so i do think that this is a big year for him. I do think that he would benefit from a good season And that this is not something that he can take lightly in in that You know this this year is going to be big for him. They were going to have to put up big numbers and you know win some games..

"I think he's going to be a backup in the NFL, but I think Max Johnson could be a potential first round pick one day. Alright, Final one because we got to run because we're up against a break wrapping up with Josh Booty when Down the field throws short, quick throws at Lane likes to Lane likes to expose defenses and make you cover every blade of grass. That's what these new offensive coordinators are doing to defensive coordinators is it's not line up packet in its spread. Let's cut make you cover the whole entire field, and I think that's what Corral is so good at doing is like here. If you make a mistake in the back end, he'll make you pay because he's accurate down the field. He can run around and make plays outside the pocket if the play breaks down. And he's great with the quick throws. He's very, very athletic, and that's what I like about him. He played his best games in the biggest games last year. If you watch the film against Alabama, and some of the teams that the old miss has to go up against, they play some pretty good defense is when you think about Auburn A and M L S u Bama And he played some of the best and the best games, So I like him a lot before we let you run Josh Booty because I see the Bulla logo. I do remember the party and having the booty Brother drinks, which is unbelievable. In New York City. Tell us a little bit. And what's the audience about Bulla? Yeah, we're excited. "You know what, this is the place I want to go play football. So he clearly believes, he has an opportunity in a chance to play based on something. I would assume he was told in some kind of recruiting pitch. And by the way, I really, really love the messaging that TJ Finley is put out to the world ever since his announcement that he's going to Auburn came out. Is he's been very very respectful and also clear that he is going to fight hard and compete and try to get on the field and try to beat out the established quarterback. Their bonuses, like hey, bring it down. I want a competition and it's going to be really fun and established quarterback. The guy who I mean from the outside looking in, I don't follow Auburn that closely, but I thought, I thought Bo Nix leader, that football team, been there awhile, the established guy. And so to see Bo Nix compete with a younger, I think more talented player with more upside is very, very interesting and exciting. Now I will say the real loser and all of this has got to be LS. They're losing a really talented quarterback. Probably their most just naturally. Gifted quarterback was TJ Finley. He's from Louisiana and I don't understand why sucking LSU did not appear to want to build around TJ Finley. You know, they have Max Johnson and Myles. Brennan, people think Myles Brennan is going to start, but maybe Max Johnson and palm both of them ago. Like they're neither as talented as TJ Finley. And if you're a bad football team, that's not going to win a lot. Anyway, why don't you build around the young guy who's got more potential? And you can have more years with like tie should not go to the senior tie, should go to the guy whose younger who you have, more time to grow and develop and work with. So, I think that from home, I think it's confusing stuff going on at LSU. I'm like, I don't understand why TJ Finley wasn't embraced more, but Auburn's only going to get better mean. Auburn the quarterback position in competition. The quarterback competition is only going to help the University of Auburn football team, get better. We're either it's going to push their current starting quarterback bone next to get even better and grow as a player and I become you know, what Auburn really needs at quarterback. Or TJ, Finley's going to become the man and take them. Hopefully a step forward as a football program. So It's a win-win for Auburn. I'm really excited. I think it's maybe the most interesting quarterback battle in college football right now is, you know, TJ Finley versus Bo Nix. And TJ fishing is not afraid. I love that attitude to be totally fine, and comfortable to say, I'm going in, I'm going, if I hard, I'm going to try to take your job, May the best man win and a healthy competition is good for everybody. Especially a team like Auburn who I think could use better quarterback play. Now news item number to another story that I went. Oh man, I love, I.

"Certainly one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the day tomorrow night in Baton Rouge between South Carolina and Lsu. Castaneda joining us from down there Quin. Thank you very very much. Appreciate the time, and it looks like a weather. Is An issue for what's going on down there right now? Well, just for the moment I'm across the street Tiger Stadium's to my left in their facility straight across the street I'm about to record up and advancer for tomorrow and had a little lightening. got. Dark severe winds and pouring but you can see the nicer weather up on the horizon. So things should be back to normal about ten minutes. We'll good because. That is a place that doesn't need Louisiana does not need any more bad weather. Quinn let's talk a little bit before we get to the game just about your job this year it's different I'm sure. A lot of zoom calls a lot of unusual situations caused by the pandemic. How would you describe the the obvious difference between this and every other year you've been on the sidelines for ESPN and ABC. Well, it's taken a lot of the fun out of it taken a lot of the things that I enjoyed get on campus to meet with the coaches to talk to the strength coaches just to get a vibe for how that team's doing and you learn so much whether it's Roman down the hallway and talking to a tight ends coach or bumping into a recruiting intern about video, they just paint so so that. Part of my investigation is is far less exciting. This year there's no social aspects in terms of our TV crew, our TV team so it's just zooms and when I'm on the road I'm the only one here are our broadcast crew will will broadcast this from Bristol. I'm the only one here. So I kind of treat this like I'm a spy, I don't touch anything I talked to strangers and I couldn't. quit. There's always a challenge on the sidelines especially. When there is weather but is it any or how different is it i? Guess I'm trying to ask dealing with the crew. Fifteen hundred miles away or maybe longer or farther right upstairs nothing you can see them but you at least know that they were seeing the same thing you're seeing. Yeah there's a little bit of a time delay in the audio so it can be anywhere from two seconds four seconds. So I've been on a crew with Jason Bonetti and Rod Gilmore. The last couple years Mike spent hot the whole game this year I've changed crews almost every week, and because we're doing it remotely. They can't have my mic on because we'd be talking over each other. So we do it old school and I'll talk to the producer I talked back and say, Hey, after the third down, play I wanNA talk about upon her coming out for hey, if they make a first down here I want to talk about how they're tight ends doing a great job so. Do it old school and go through the go through the producer in the in the remote truck. In order in order to get on air whereas in the past I could just talk and we were seamless. Clean on the sidelines I mean to say the least there are restrictions what are they and how much do you have to tiptoe around? It's really not bad. I mean we won I. Did a game not they actually made me call the game from the stands in the front row was good seat but I really couldn't get a feel for what was going on on the benches since then they've just widened appalled widen areas it's actually easier now because there's less hangers on, there's less alums, there's less NFL scouts until the sidelines are vacant and it makes my job a lot easier. I also feel pretty secure in that the players and coaches have all been tested recently as recently as Friday or Saturday morning. So I, feel good in that regard So it's actually almost easier less fans less crowds more space. Speaking of testing. How often do you have to be tested? we test once a week it's either an ad home test, and then you mail it in test results come back in about thirty six hours or it's an onsite tasks on a Thursday afternoon then you quarantine. And then Friday, they released you so so far knock on wood six for six negative tests. That would be Kinda. Nerve wracking you show up at a game and you have to sweat it out and you hope you don't get a a Nick Sabin positive. Let's talk about the game because. It's a really interesting game. Let's start with South Carolina just your. As I know you do gather as much information as you can you probably would like to. Be Able to gather more in person but. Your impressions of what you've seen to them and and what you expect. Well they beat Auburn as you know, and they got the three turnovers and converted those in touchdowns. My issue was South Carolina's they're operating an offense with very limited downfield wide receiver threats shy Smith is a natural slot receiver. Colin Hill is is working Mike, Lobos offense efficiently and their offensive line in running backs or carrying the day. Okay. That's with this team is I'm not sure they're ever going to be a high scoring team defensively they're really good corners who can shut you down they add to the box so. I think South Carolina given that Lsu has a freshman quarterback. I'm leaning towards them having some success defensively in this ball game. So I kinda like Carolina's ability to negate lsu with a freshman quarterback but Carolina's physical they're tough. They're not nothing flashy about him and I think big plays are hard for them I. Think they have to manufacture find ways to manufacturer big plays but I think this team is definitely moving in the right direction I. Think they've improved each week. And the other side of that you alluded to the quarterback situation team that has struggled mightily on defense quarterback play has been pretty good I. Know I know it's impossible to gauge because we don't really have a lot of information but. What have you what have you been able to learn about where they are right now? Yet, teach gets the start a freshman Ponchatoula high school. He's gigantic six, six, two, hundred and forty two pounds nets down from to sixty s a big toll righty and you watch his high school tapes just drops in the pocket and he conflict the ball and it goes forty yards without him even trying he seems like he's calm. He's Louisiana product of this dream for him the ADRENALIN will be running. Also expect to see, Max? Johnson. The son of NFL, quarterback Brad Johnson a lefty also tall but more of a dual threat and when you think about calling the game around a freshman quarterback making his first start, you know any kind of run game would be beneficial and to put the quarterback in successful positions. Early in the game, get him hit but but get a couple first downs give him some easy throws and I think that'll be on the mind of lsu going to be a little more conservative game plan I'd. Imagine. You know he's got targets downfield terrace Marshall their running game I thought was anemic Missouri game that was the most disappointing part of the game in my eyes Missouri was without three defensive tackles in that game and Lsu had no running game whatsoever good news for the Tigers to get Ed Ingram back at left guard. But this is an offense through the air with Miles Brennan that's been outstanding. But now you've got a new freshman quarterback. So expectations drop again, I'm seeing a little bit more of a lower scoring game here. In Clinton's you've seen them. The. Biggest used on defense. Would give. Horrible And coach today sentence embarrassing. Alignment. Very, often they're they're moving at a snap making checks that is when the coverage changes on the fly because of emotion because of formation change that has been a dismal day of given up big play after big play against Mississippi State, it was more catching and run the air raid defense was was atrocious quite honestly continued to play man defense got shredded by crossing patterns but I was at the Mizzou game and That game was defined by busts. I mean just blatant bus where I got him. No you got to I got you got him guys wide open touchdown in the running game. Their linebackers are not playing physical. They're not playing north not playing north. They're not getting to the line of scrimmage and engaging blockers to waiting for runners they're missing tackles remember the tyler beatty runs Missouri fiscally untouched broke attack Lens. Gone So. Those are the headlines here new quarterbacks for Lsu and a defense that has had no answers.
