"Which limited the ability for passengers for airlines to use it as a hub Southwest Airlines. Still does some connecting flow. They are because they have like a group of gates that are together. But they have several groups of gates not all the connections. Always happen. I believe insides, no security and so. You get some. It's a frustrating experience. It's also it was built in the seventies. It's fifty years old forty years old. And it shows I I think that some of the architecture is cool. Yes. But it is very inconvenient airport. I was speaking with a co worker of mine female coworker looking for aathroom coming out of the gates. She had to walk on the like all the way to the other side of the terminal to find a women's restroom. That's because the only one on that side was a men's restroom outside of security. So yeah, there's some frustrating stuff. But yeah. So it's so the new terminal is coming a few years away. They broke ground today, which is exciting. So congratulations to them on that. That said it was a terribly divisive. Why would we spend a billion and a half dollars to make this thing happen debate? And the city I believe runs the airport authority, but didn't wanna spend tax dollars doing it and trying. Make sure it was going to be fully privately funded, and it got to be this weird situation. Where like they went to a vote, and it was it was approved. The vote was the vote came out in favor of it. So that was exciting for the airport, folks. But also just had all these challenges like even after it was approved. They wanted to start doing some of the prep work, but the funding hadn't come through yet. So they were borrowing money from different city agencies budget and people were like a hoc-, you're using our tax money to do it. And you know. I'm not good at budgets. Let me be very clear about that. Right. If the same amount comes in and goes out at the end of the year, like I'm really happy, regardless of which little bucket and all went to. So I'm not the best person to necessarily speak on us. But also there is you know, there's the money moves around they're going to get back filled. And so are you borrowing against that money? And did you have to pay interest to yourself because you borrowed from different fund or do you not need to pay interest? Because no one ever didn't have the money available. And there was no borrowing at the other side, are you these are playing accounting games with some of the stuff. And I honestly thinks a lot of that comes down to people with an agenda trying to prove that they are you know, that they're getting screwed by the system. And I don't know. I I am staunchly in favor of investing infrastructure. I think it's a shame that some of these projects cost so much money. But also what like when you invest in money, and you build new airports, and you have demand for your facilities people show up and keep will pay to be there. And you get the associated tax revenue you get. Data job growth, and you get the associated benefits. So, you know, a little bit shut up in deal except that like macroeconomics works..

And my voice recorder and a couple of spare cables in a bag. I'm not sure I could get that under four kilos. Yeah. Certainly not with my water bottle clip to it. Maybe it'd be tough. Let's talk about the seven thirty seven. Other airlines have not been quite explicit by how far they're going with them. But that's the sort of hard data stuff. We have on the softer intern. Bits the air current storage on our put together. A really interesting analysis. I thought of sort of trends in aircraft deliveries in global macro economic issues in talked to a few leasing companies and other people like that that are saying basically, you know, what like we're we're seeing some softening in the market. And what's interesting to me is the softening that they are describing mostly appears to be that the secondhand stuff that they already had isn't getting placed back into the market as it's getting replaced by the seven thirty seven max plane, so airlines that used to have a, you know, a three nineteen rather than leasing even a small startup airline rather than leasing used three nineteen essentially the lease rates are very cheap in the operating costs are very low, but it still has decent officiency instead of doing that they're going out and just getting themselves into a seven thirty seven max or three twenty Neo there. Getting the new planes instead. And so the new aircraft liberals are holding up but arguably at the expense of significant additional growth in the overall number of planes flying doesn't exempt. Yeah. Okay. Is this growth is sort of a start getting to is that does that mean it's a net zero growth and the answer is no these planes are bigger they eat more people they fly further. So your capacity in your ASM's, you're able seat miles or kilometers. If you happen to use normal decent a distance metric system. I really feel if you start getting into some metrics capacity is actually still increasing..

"Go like don't get don't get too upset when they cancel bye bye. Good travel insurance that still gonna cover you. Although I'm not sure what travel insurance is gonna recover replacement tickets against while air right now read the fine print, very carefully. Good. Good advice. Let's see here. He got Qantas. So Qantas has come up with a new policy. They are going to have some bag weight limits and untiring Bax if for carry on bags, and they're also going to not allow the crew to help not help with those bags. So what what do you think about this? I'm sure people have pushed back against it. I'm totally okay with it. Yeah. I am. It's hard, right? I understand not having the flight attendants obligated to put your any bag for your bag, even for you get I think that sure that'd be great. That would be nice. I help people when I see them needing help too and whatever. But that's it's not necessarily part of the job. And there have been over the years. I feel like over the years you get US airline crew whether to work to rule thing or just because they're lazy. Or they don't want to their job. Also doesn't involve lifting those things become to workers comp issue here in the states because you know, we have all sorts of different legal rules. I don't know that that's necessarily a problem in Australia, but trying to figure out who's going to be responding of if the employee lifts the bag and hurts themselves whose fault is that. And that nets real issue does in especially when airlines don't spare flight attendants around like if I have thirty pound bag on the flight attendant has lifted up 'cause I can't get the overhead bin and tweaks they're back and then can't fly. I kind of want them to be able to open the door on pop the slide and stuff are more than I need them to get bags in the vins. Even though one is something they'll do all the time in one something that they'll never do almost never do. So you know, that that's that's sort of where I get into the icy both sides of it saying if I had by again, like I have no problem helping people put bags in the overhead band often offer to do. So rather than waiting to be asked. But at the same time, I. Kind of feel like you should pack the bag that you can carry a move around. Not just as much as you want care just as you can. Yeah. So the weight limits are interesting to the weight limit changes. So the new rule limits to ten kilograms and four kilograms so your personal item can wait for kilograms, your luggage can ten kilograms..

"Right can be a command a price premium on one versus the other because firing on this new seat versus the old stagger. Whatever with middle's, this is unless you happen to really like flying backwards, which I do I leaping flights. This is an interesting problem for them. Can they optimize management and see that this is a higher demand product? Yeah. Yeah. I I was looking in the Australian business traveler had a has an article in they. Talk about the first-class getting a kind of a slightly sleeker new design in on the seventy seven dash tins. So which I find interesting it looks similar to the business class. Like what you're saying? So is there really I mean, it's to me. It's just more space right in in. I in probably a better menu. If you know, I put an air quotes so has done a pretty good job over the years of having differentiation in the food practices. Not your United Airlines. You get soup. Okay. Okay. I mean to me the business product looks actually worth the miles. If I was travelling long-haul MBA bet much more than club world hats because global is like the least attractive to me when I'm looking at flights potentially. So it looks better. Is it worth the fuel surcharges that charges? Probably not. That's just my take. But listeners what you what do you think we know we have some flyers out there? So happy happy to hear what you think. Seth you. You wanted to talk about Jet Airways. I don't know anything about Jet Airways besides they're lucky to be around. Yeah. They finally they've been grounding planes left. And right. They're down well below half their fleet available, which is bad news for an airline. It turns out if you have fewer than half your planes. You probably aren't gonna fly real well. So their schedules mass. They've actually finally had to start canceling originally was just short haul stuff that they were cancelling their financially struggling, we're having trouble paying for the leases on a lot of their aircraft and said they were being grounded. They weren't being repossessed that they were being grounded. And so it's you know, baby steps along the way to completely collapsing. And they finally they had over the last month or so a couple times had false starts on. No. We've got a restructuring plan were ready and finally today which is Monday when recording this day announce that their founder has agreed to step down and him getting out of the way was one of the big challenges towards finally getting the restructuring in the funding gun. For better or worse. The state Bank of India is now the majority shareholder of the airline much like with Air India. So the jet still has more third party investors than Air India's. I'm including at odds still holds a pretty large stake. But it's now a state run or a state owned carrier. So it's gonna be interesting to see if they can, you know, pull off a magic trick here in how far how close they've gotten to complete collapse in if they can dig their way out from a personal perspective..

"Be aerospace and Teague our big design company that does eight airplanes as much as anything else. And if you other partners, or it's just the form known as be aerospace now Collins aerospace, thanks to mergers diamond super diamond with adore trumped on it get, and so you know, you can make it as sounds cool as you want or it's something that's kind of flying for awhile now and British Airways finally catching up. And they put a door on it. So if you feel like the door that only goes up to like just above waist height is significant enough to increase your privacy and feeling of coolness on an airplane. Then having that door is really important. I was actually having a conversation the other day with another frequent guest Jason about privacy on planes and does having a door immediately translate to sufficient privacy that it's always better. I think the answer is probably yes. But it was it was an interesting debate. We had going back and forth about what it really meant. Yeah. What do you think? Then about say, you know, the overall look of the product besides the door because it looks nice. It looks classy, right, color wise, all that. But do you think it's actually a comfortable product. What what's your feeling on on the seat itself or do you? I promise you diamond. I think it's okay. It's not perfect. But. It's perfect. You're still have the great caper the, narrowing tote problem. I'm trying to find a picture of it for once again by no other than that. It really is a nice product like gets a lot done. And so I can't argue too much super diamonds a bad product. It's not great for flying with someone else in my opinion. Because I like, you know, you sort of face away from each other. And or when I don't I don't look for that. And you can only have one person in the window seat. And so that that's bad. But bad is relative. I think it's a great product for compared to for most passengers compared to the existing club world. I think it's good thing. I think it's interesting that they call it club sweets instead of club world. Yeah. Because that raises just the fact that they are making this product. Demonstrable, you know, it would be easy to say. This is a nicer product than their first class seat in many ways, these are given the refreshed. I think the first has more space, but this is a significant boost to the business class product does this destroy their first class product have have they said anything about what they're gonna do with first-class? I've seen one moderately oblique statement from someone who probably knows suggesting that there will be a first class refresh as well, but the planes that are getting this. I are three cabin. They are business world traveler, plus which premium economy and economy, so I could easily see especially the seven four seven aren't getting retrofit because they're being retired over the next four years or whatever. So that first class in club world product is going to be around for a while to three eighty aren't getting this product also again either for impending retirements or just because they're new enough. And so those are also the blame that will absolutely keep. His class at least for the time being with an old product. Right. But it'll be the product. And so you start to get some questions about things like if you're flying from Toronto to London, which is the first long-haul route that's going to get it. It's going to be on proving runs in between Madrid in Heathrow in on the three fifty one thousand starting in July is location, and then they real the real deal is up Tober..

"And welcome to episode two hundred thirty seven of dots lines destinations. I'm Seagraves today. Joined by Seth Miller, I don't FOSS had a had an engagement that came up last minute. So he said screw you guys. I'm going home. What he really screw you guys. I want to keep my job. Oh, yeah. That's true. Yeah. It's important details overrated in my opinion. But whatever. Speak from experience. I did quit my job to travel more because I didn't like it. So I didn't I didn't wait for them to fire me though. So I don't know maybe doesn't count. So some things are happening in Europe. And there's rumors that or moves to make Brussels Amsterdam flights go away. And and this is based on some legislation. That's being put in place. Yeah. It's it's really interesting. Right. There's in the US we talk about sort of slot squatting and sitting on short flights and keeping you know airport utilization. Insurgents there are some rows that seem stupid Philadelphia to LaGuardia. Philadelphia JFK, Philadelphia Newark was always my favorite examples. Right. You're talking about like one hundred miles and everybody would be it would seem that everybody is better served by not flying those routes, except I can only say that somewhat half heartedly that I've used them to my benefit many times. But you know, there are certain places where things are too close together. And it doesn't make any sense a lot of ways. But in the US, at least, we don't have other transit infrastructure available in Europe. There's also high speed rail, and it's high speed rail that goes to the airports as a general rule. So if you wanted to travel between skill and Brussels airports, the real not sharla that actually can be done on the train. And so and it can be done on a high-speed train, and it can be done on a high-speed train that actually like door to door. The block time is about the same as doing it on the block time of a plane, even though the plane moves so much faster because you've got taxi delays and all that other stuff. Yeah. So it's one of those things that you wonder like why are these two airports that basically are next to each other? Why do they have flights between them and skip -als full? They have a lot of trouble growing, adding new service KLM wants to grow their but can't because there's lot constricted. And from time to time are forced to give up slots to competitors because competition authorities are like, okay, you it's great that you're the biggest one here. But like you can't own the entire airport. Sorry, and they're trying to come up with creative ways around it. There's a lot of things going on. There's a new airport sort of on the east side of Amsterdam is not a new airport existing airport that they're trying to get commercial service into. Okay, it's not gonna happen immediately. But they've been doing sort of noise testing and things like that. And there's a lot of interesting discussions there. That's one of the places where some people have talked about possibly doing a like underground hyperloop that connects the two airports inside security, so they can be treated as a single facility. Right. If you can get the the tram ride as it were down to ten or twelve minutes as basically like going from one end of Atlanta, the other. So what that it's forty miles away. Yeah. But in the interim people are saying are somewhat rightfully saying, look guys. It's really inefficient. It's terrible. Use of slots is terribly resources serve USA fuel in noise and everything else stop flying these planes. And I don't know I'm not necessarily a fan of regulators deciding what route skit operated railing flashback to the CIT in the United States. And what mess that was? But it was great. If you're an airline and wanted to make lots of money because you're fares were fixed and competition was limited but not necessarily great for passengers. So at an it's an interesting one. But I just I get why they're doing it. But I also get wide stupid. And so where's this other airport? Do you do you know like is it is it in Amsterdam? Or is it like out like extractor somewhere like that? It's out to the east. I'll see if I can find it. That sounds super interesting..
