"He's like drawing lines in the grass and hit it at a certain launch angles bro. I barely oldest golf club right now and I didn't have glove. That day was a nightmare. Many left it at home but Dude I. It's just something mentally man I'm not like str- I was actually doing it the other day the range and I'm just not strong enough with the way I hold the golf club. It's always just I can never do what people saying where it's like just slowly take it back. Just let the club do the work. I. I'm just so like Loosey Goosey and not I don't know what it is like my grips not like in the right spot. Where when I make contact. It could be anywhere. So that's all I'm thinking about like. Oh it could be behind the ball. It could be on top of the ball. Hit the ball right in the middle. There's never a consistent. I can't feel the consistency with that club. I just can't. It's completely gone and it's been it's been gone for three years. Now accepts your one-handed chips at Palmetto were the best ships. You've ever because I have some sort of control over because I have to write like it's like one one as old as slowdown. It forces me to unlike all of a sudden thinking about the race and I'm like all like let me try and cut under this and then like I'm saying all right. I don't have enough like arm. I don't have enough restrengthen my dainty rhys or something. I don't know what it is that I have to now go faster so that the club doesn't like move on my downside so I was thinking the other day now. There's no like mental like has if that eight year old Hawaiian kid has the strength to chip like you can chip. I. I don't know what it is I. I'm in the camp of I. Don't make fun of people who have trouble chipping. I went through like a little issue. Obviously it's all relative but issue right field but I don't like to make fun of it but the risk uses is not. I'm trying to think of any explanation because at this point I know what it takes like. I know I'm supposed to move my upper body with the with the club. Kids told me I know that I was flat. I know just moving my arms. I'm trying to do that. I just can't get the club from the spot where it comes back to the ball with any sort of confidence. I can't do it. I just can't do it. I think we're seeing the problem. It's it's all all up here man. Through the other day I played and I was hitting such great drives and iron shots that I may be only hit two or three wedges and I shot a seventy eight waiting. Tell you guys this. I mean I was playing lights. Shot thirty five on the back of Cherry Valley Country Club like playing lightsout golf. Probably my best round two or three years and I only hit two chips all day. I was just hitting Greens. Like you wouldn't like my job but like if I could just check I would be a much better golfer. I need to learn one if you only had to chip two times. How the Hell did you do six? Let's talk about me and my putting is a nightmare. I could not miss a greener regulation. This Day I was I was unconscious. It was like every because I got this club. You really can't lose drive so even like drives that I was pulling away over to the right like maybe I'd be in the next fairway. I was still drilling these Greens or even like just on the fringe and also put a couple from the rough it was. I just wasn't chick I was doing it. Yeah I could not put. I should've shot like even this day. It was my day. It was my caddyshack that out there and like I was. I could do no wrong. I could not par threes drilling these teams. It was like it was nuts and I just can't Putt infomercial. With the worst run or strike. Oh my dad got a square strike. Don't even know if they make a leftist Gresh strike do necklace eight. Listen just switch to righty insurance. No joke break. You're going to have the square strike. You're going to have that potter. That just hovers over the ball by itself. Yes you'RE GONNA have. That standalone putters sick. I play with somebody that use. It is the most infuriating a rule that if you missed one inside FBI he added stopped using it because it took so long to set up along with the guy that played with actually leave the club there and then walk around and check out of his mind me and I'll give it to him. He cut out of his mind. But it was so annoying. You F four feet down the whole thing and they get over no did. I couldn't handle it but he never was. I wonder how much of my putting is because I'm lined up incorrectly but because I feel like I just can't hit it even if I'm lined up perfectly if you try and tell me to hit it to a certain spot that's not happening the other day and I couldn't even get close. I'd like wait till footers. I didn't make them wait. Till you get Sir Nick fucking roast in your roast you every day. Do you should see me to everyone's people message me like. Why don't you fix your putting stroke? We mean just fix like that's not a thing you can just carry harder like no launch us do it. The right way like No fucking Shit so now. I'm standing over there. I've got sir. Nick sent ten different tweets chirping. Every so I'm standing there like like in what he's doing all the different gadgets where I'm standing except I got no gadgets. That's all and I'm standing there and like I'll stand over a four foot or that I know is like right center and I'm like there's a zero point zero percent chances goes in like all the role it somehow straight off. If it's even close to hitting it straight it'll just go in. It's a right center but and I've just like there's zero chance I got nick my shoulders. I Potter like kisses tech. Amelio that line in the center of your butter. It's supposed to be in the middle of the boss at the line. Saw The transition though to talk. I mean you're talking about roasting tweets and crossing swings Max year now the number one roaster of swings and goslings on on on twitter How did this start like where was the first one? How did you know it was like picking up steam because like now it's a must follow must watch every time you touch you? It was a. It was super random. I had to fly to California for night a for a day to I was working with somebody on short game. Actually shutout Frankie and I landed a stay at a hotel right X. Airport got a tweet from some kid named Brian McLaughlin and he said He said Hey. Here's a video of my swing. Why don't you Roshni like Gordon? Ramsay didn't think much of it but he sent me this video. That had a terrible angle is like the forty five degrees. Kinda face on Kinda down the line and I said I use the Jif The Gordon Ramsay Jeff where he puts the bread on the girls ears. Would what are you? And she says idiots sandwich like this is the worst of camera angle of all time to do. A swing roast. Maybe got two more. That night went to bed. Woke up had woke up early. Had to do this golf thing. So I'm done at like ten and I have like a hundred more videos like sense. Me On my wow so now. At the airport estimate do do a few more and all of a sudden it like gets legs in it starts to become kind of crazy. I decided to call it quits because like like I know we mentioned I mentioned this before but I do. WanNa be really good at golf so like I can't just be on my phone all day I know people don't believe that but I do need to practice so I decided I was gonna call it quits but then all these famous people and you guys start sending me your swings so I had to keep it on. I will say of all. Did your three might be like my favorite. Do you know the one that really hurt me. As I picked the by far the best thing I've ever had in my life of mine I could have done. I could've went down a champ and it would have been fun frankie cute. He can't Champi blade it. I've picked from Sage Valley where I absolutely hit up this missile. Right down the middle. I mean the the sound of that drive will will ring throughout Sage Rally for years to come and you still were like. I don't know why people roast you're chipping so much when your golf swing when you're full. Swing is as bad or something that it's just like Holy Shit Man. I thought maybe you were like all right like this. Has some potential here like now now. Let's get serious like put. It was just completely more. We'll give you the hardest thing to do in the reason Nowadays it is. It is difficult to keep up these roses and a lot of people. Send me like pretty good gallstones. Like I'll give you this frankie. I don't know where your ball goes. I've never watched you played off like your swing is decent like it's pretty good. That's huge to hear from you and I can't I can't just say like Oh you have a pretty good swing frankie like. I'd have to say something. I also what you sued and and so I could kind of guess that you don't like stripe and all the time no. I'm glad that I was part of it. Because it's like a new movement. It's a new wave but it's hilarious man like I know like all the guys talking. A couple of guys from the island is the other. Dan like Devan tasers like man. Maximum is a Hollywood. I was going through his tweet all day long yesterday. Just laughing my ass off at how he is at like just picking apart like you know that it pisses some of these guys off to yesterday. I think you had one that I know destroyed the guy. When you're like you have a great swing that you do absolutely nothing and I was like all men that hurts. Every single scratch golfers like brain and their heart and their soul. Because yeah you have a great slowing but like you're just a country club hacked or sending. I know everybody picks favorite swing. I would too But if you send in a swing and it looks really good. And I don't know who you are like people want a compliment but like that's actually kind of the biggest like self while you're a really good swing and like you can't even your club. Championship golf is more than just like what it looks like ball new school in the halls so those people. I try to avoid all costs. 'cause they're looking for a compliment but those people are the ones that just want to go. Yeah like don't have a really good swaying like Sherman like you still suck to we. It's so good man. We alluded to it a little bit before where we said like. Are you thinking about it on the court? She said no which is obviously like the truth. But like you know that you've now open yourself up to the entire Internet world that every time now you hit any sort of or now like your swing is completely dissected. My everyone on times a million because you are the guy that dissect people swing so like if you go on a street now where you play poorly wherever it's like well who's this guy..

The other day I've played with with guys who hadn't played a golf course around here is a club they had never been to in. And there's this one hall that has only whole that has water on it and they said where's the water on this whole and I said with tears and I'm going to show you. "How much do you do you ever watch coverage of termites? You're playing information about what's going on out there. I've watched like The most fun day I've ever had watching golf was after I was second time off at Bay Hill on Saturday when it was like the hardest off ever and I played really well on Saturday and I. I basically sprinted home back to the hotel and turn on the TV and had the most enjoyable five hours of golf watching anyone's ever had just watching people implode knowing I already finished. My name was GONNA go up on that board. I like to watch golf. I won't I won't always watch before to like figure anything out about it but if I know the course is going to be firm I will so or or if there's like a weather change just to see if it is a little bit different than before. It's hard to pick up too much unless the courses playing really difficult. I mean if if you're just watching like the travelers usually soften scores are love. You're watching that. I don't think it's good to watch because then you're just watching people make a ton of birdies and it feels intimidating. Probably the wrong word but something like that whereas if you're playing if you're watching a major. Us Open. It really helps to watch the ball bouncing you can see. It's like man on twelve. You gotTA landed. Short of the green are also long screwed so I watch a little bit during the week. It's also I mean there's on some level it's gotta be too much information right like it's like player game you know like hit your shots stick to your game plan. Your game plan is going to be in some way different than literally. Every other person feel implant so it's like on some level. It's I'm sure it's hey. None of this really matters out Yeah you gather a little bit of okay. It's a little more firm than I thought. Our Holy Shit that nine that landed on the front like rolled all the way off. I gotta remember that on that groups but outside of that it's like you gotta play Games. Yeah and also. I don't know who somebody said this but they some professional golfer but they say you know if you play golf. It's like four and a half hours. You're try not to be thinking golf for four and half hours. 'cause you'd be too tired you try and do twenty to forty second segments you know. Try to keep it to keep your brain as fresh as possible. So if you're watching the golfing grinding the Gulf of or then you're turning that into you know six hours of Often that it's just over load of of brain power to the game for you know however many four four to six days of of a of the Gulf week so that's probably also not super healthy but I mean I don't have a lot else going on Lebanon. Did you ever? That's interesting kind of the capacity of bandwidth or or like mental emotional strength to think about golf during around like do you ever after you hit a shot in competition. Think afterwards like man. I just didn't really like I just wasn't really thinking on. That guy didn't have like we talk all the time. One of our phrases uses I. I didn't have a plan apart off the fringe right like six feet off the fringe and you just step up forty feet past the hole. And you're like you know I had no plan. You know what I was doing. It happens a lot at home. Or you're you're sly. I did it the other day. We were playing a game and I had like eight feet for Birdie ten feet for Birdie and Iran at like four or five feet by downhill. Putt and I forgot that. I thought that Birdie I had to make and then I forgot that like we also had a teen thing going on and then I missed coming back in totally. Hose the guy on my team because I spaced. I will say having a caddy that His his financial and his his finances in his lifestyle is based on your performance. He won't really let you do that. We do have a plan. That's his job at my job. So it's a lot easier to focus when you're playing for like a million dollars and not just trying to impress frankie and rats so that's a little different but yeah there are days. I've had David like the opposite of a million dollars..

"And I had a pretty good live at I had a weird stance. And obviously there's water short, right. It's not the easiest shot. But everyone's getting there and to and I only have six hundred in my hand. And I'm thinking gosh, if I lay up is just not the best in Joe first thing he says when we walk up there. He goes one hundred yard shot up the left really I want hit two six aren't get on the green to putt deficit to fifteen feet. And I'm sitting there thinking man, this feels a little conservative in. I wanted to lean on Joe. And I remember just in Thomas texted me a couple nights ago and said to be very very patient. Not try to do too much when I put those two together I thought all right? Joe knows Joe knows what he's doing man. Just shut the hell up, and listen and just hit your frigging wedge down there and made birdie, and I look at him on my gosh man here smart, but he keeps me loose too. I mean, we talk about the dodgers Lakers. All that stuff. He makes it he makes it seem easy. He has a great demeanor. And again, he also knows knows a ton about golf, which is just like the perfect combination. He's got legendary facial hair as well. That's disgusting. But that's part of the whole week was on Thursday. We're coming on fourteen. He's eating non crushable. And he looks at me. And he goes, I got I always tell me stuff and his beard, and it's this gusting he'll wear and I'm like, dude like Leary. The entire thing is food like I just don't know where to start and he goes do peanut butter my beer, and I'm like, no, no, you're good. He's shows the golf course he goes. Hey, remember when I asked you if I had peanut butter my beard nested. Yeah. I said I wasn't lying. There was none in there. He goes. Yeah. He goes, I think it was the same color as my beard because the whole drive home smelling peanut butter on my hand in there. And I pulled some out that is just disgusting. So that that's not quite legendary facial her. But it sure is something to look at. I guess so coming down the stretch or the whole day yesterday. I mean, what are you? What are you thinking about the most is that like I want I need I need to win this. I wanna win this golf tournament. Or is it like all right? We need a good finish. Or? I mean is it do you allow yourself to think about the result? Yeah. I think the hardest part, and I've actually thought about this quite a bit and just like my my life as far as just kind of thinking about other. Golfers is always put this. Use this whole as an example eighteen at Torrey Pines second shot if you at the fairway it's obviously a risk to go for how long you are. If Phil Mickelson Tiger Woods and myself are in the middle of the fairway, and we're all tied for the lead fill in tiger have a lot of freedom to go for it. And I in some respects could lay up make sure I make par and not lose the opportunity to keep my card. Right. That's like a serious thought that I think I'd probably have I've always hoped that. I would get up there and think screw it. We're winning. We're in this position. That's why we play. But I I don't know that that's the hardest part. So the the whole kind of weekend. I kept thinking man, it'd be great to win. But like you can't like don't screw this up like this. We gotta have some job security, and it's such a weird blend in your brain. Because you don't want to think like that. I felt I felt like I was being kind of soft doing that. And I kept trying to push out of my brain. And I think as the Sunday went on. On. I did a better and better job of thinking..

"Saw you up doing media you you did the TV interview during the rain delay which everybody was shocked. I didn't even know if you could say no to that point. That was the worst dot couldn't think I couldn't talk. I thought it was going to poop on Amanda. Who's one of my best friends? I was like this is going to be so bad. I was just trying to stay upright. And then all of a sudden people are texting about on like did. I just do the wrong thing. Like what I do know such a rookie just treat it normally like the worst thing we want is for you to be way up in your own head and alone with your thoughts. If you got somebody kind of distract you from stuff. No, I appreciate it. Honestly, it was good. I called my fiance Lacey. And I said, hey, don't talk to me about the Gulf. But what are you doing? And so we started talking, and then I called my text of my coach and try to keep normal. Obviously. I I talked to you guys more than everybody which was kind of fun until. I think I was like four minutes from going back out, and you guys are still blowing me up. All right. Like, I do have to go. I gotta get going at some point. I know I'm on my phone a lot. But that might be a little too much. Were you really not looking leaderboards to that point? I did a great job. That was the first first for me. I told myself the night before I wasn't gonna look at a board till fourteen because the day before when I play with Rory and that was obviously a big big hole thing going on there. And I kind of knew that he would play good. And I kind of let myself play a little match-play with him just in general because I knew he'd have a solid day. And I knew I could get caught up a little bit too much in the the whole golf tournament trying to win it on a Saturday, which is obviously kind of like a big. No, no. So I remember I looked at the leader board on five. And Joe caught me. And he looked at me goes don't you dare look at leaderboard. And I was like, okay. And he goes just keep doing what you're doing. I'm like, all right. No more leaderboard till we get finished fourteen. And that was kind of funny part about the whole rain delay. Was it happened while I was on fourteen. I promise I wasn't gonna look till after fourteen. So I didn't look didn't look didn't look didn't look when during the rain delay. And I finally asked Joe while we're walking I said, hey, man. You know? Are we standing goes? Yeah. Of course. And I was like all right. Well, should I know and go sure and he. Told me I'm like, and I thought maybe a one shot lead maybe to and he's like you're up three. And I'm like are you, sir? I don't know if that may be more nurse. Of a sudden I felt like John Vandevelde out there. Well, I was going through your Twitter time mind, and you you had referred game of thrones spoiler coming referred to the night king being the gene van-de-velde. And I was like oh my God. If he ends up blowing this is about on eight three really really you're going to do this yourself. So I guess it's a question of Wendy when you start to get nervous. I mean, would you wake up is it all your thinking about is the fact that you're Tiber league going to that final round the morning sucked? So much woke up it went to actually kind of slept decent went to twelve thirty or one and woke up at seven or seven thirty. So it was actually pretty good. But I mean these times on Thursday Friday are so much easier. Sudden to Sunday figure clocks broken so sitting around walking around not knowing what the hell do stunk..

"But they were so so cool. I mean, they helped us with everything, you know, courtesy car. They took care of for me. They were going to, you know, get us anywhere we needed to go. But fortunately, we got that host family that that hooked us up and gave us free Poos, which we will never say no to and then you had the press conference to toe. I called you guys before that I may have called the wrong number by called you for that. And I was like all right. I'm going. I'm tell tell them. Hey, I promise you want thing. I'm doing it. And I get no response on like all right screwed. I gotta go inside. What was the what did you promise us? That was going to pot it up before. I did the media before morning of your time to lead. Max just promise me one thing before you go to the press conference. You have to call into the podcast. I I didn't think you'd actually like remember to do it. And you did I remembered I was like all right. This is gonna be this is going to be perfect. I'm not gonna be able to do it for very long. But they'll you know. We'll we'll all appreciate it. Don't be funny. And then of course, I must have Dow on. So I mean, how does it? Where to start really? But was the rain delay that happened when you had about a five foot left on the fourteenth hole? Was that the best or the worst thing that could have happened for you, those the worst thing that could possibly up and now it's the best. Because man, I I don't think I could feel more proud after that I've been trying to be really open with my coach. And my caddie Joe about how what I'm feeling and how I'm doing. We've been trying to have a more open line of communication instead of trying to be some cool guy. Who's like, I'm not nervous. Now. I'm good. You know, when we came out of that rain delay? I was hitting balls. I mean, my summit was going nuts. And I looked at him on my Joe, this is the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. I wanna throw up and he goes. Yeah. It's supposed to be hard. You know, like all right, right. It is normal, and we just kind of went back to work. And when I made that that was the first time I knew that was a big deal because if I miss it you kind of spiral. That's the problem is when we were just kind of been going into that hole. If I make bogey it's not the end. The world because you just kind of keep cruising. What when you come back from that delay? You have time to think all of a sudden it felt like if I miss it things could get going not great. I don't like the t shirt on fifteen and obviously sixteen through eighteen or quite hard so making that putt. Pretty much in my head. If I make that pot. I win I told myself that a few times in my head, and I was just kind of grind back in there and roll one in. But yeah, it was not. It was not great timing. I will say that. Well, we were talking as a group when we're in that rain delay internally. We're like we have texted with you with all of us that just called class acts, and we said, all right? We're treating this class x thread like it's a perfect game right now. Right. Nobody nobody perfect. Nobody say anything to max and Tron comes flying in there. And since you the shirts or picks. You know, what let's treat it normal. Because we saw you up doing media you you did the TV interview during the rain delay which everybody was shocked. I didn't even know if you could say no to that point. That was the worst dot couldn't think I couldn't talk. I thought it was going to poop on Amanda. Who's one of my best friends? "Have you ever seen him? Like what's the best you've ever seen in play ever seen him super dial din. I get lucky. I usually play him in the off season where he has taken quite a bit of time off. He's got awesome family that he spent quite a bit of time within the off season for me. I try and use it as a take. A few weeks off are a couple of weeks from the beginning, but I try to use it as since I don't have family or anything to actually like work a lot and be ready for the first vent. So when I play with them there, he's a little rusty is obviously still unbelievable golf, but drivers not normally dialed in is numbers aren't like as great and I hadn't really liked put two and two together. I was obviously feels great golfer and everything, but you're not blowing away. And then I played with him right before the match play a couple years ago, which is right before Gusta and I was frigging floored like it was shocking like how much it doesn't matter the score. I mean shot nine hundred, but it didn't. It was like it was like the the wedge like the short iron thing you read and hear about was like KAI. Kind of jaw-dropping at the time he'd already like explain to me how like works through the whole process. But I mean, we I think he birdied the first horseshoe lipped out thirty are bunker shot on the second for eagle birdie Holden nine iron from the fairway bunker on three which credit he came up and explain to me how he knew it was gonna go in. Four. He made hit a wedge like a couple of feet and other kicking and then on. I think it was the fifth hole yet another wedge and it's about the green and it's an elevated green. He hit another one and it rolled out like a foot and he goes, I went, oh, and he goes, oh, what did I make it again? Like dead series. I'm like, no, but it's like another birdie and it was. It was kinda shocking his bunk. There's he does a lot of things really well, obviously. But like I mean, his his long game is great. Is driving actually isn't crazy impressive, but he is he is it really far for, you know, I know he's, you know, forty five, maybe forty six, eight forty eight, really? Yes. So he can move it, but his bunker play and those short irons. It's like it's scary like is like it was. It's cool to get to see that in person because honestly, like we joke about it, but he really does explain to me like how he knows where it's going to do. And if if you wanna be kind of. Standoffish, like this is so annoying. Sure. Do that because I'm gonna listen. I pick up on that. He's like, hey, I'm gonna move it this far back in my stance and grip up this much, and that's going to take x. amount of yards off. But you know, the spindle out and you're like, he'll explain to you how he hit it to foot and it's not a joke like he really did know how to foot. And I enjoy that at times you roll your eyes when he's just like kicking your ass on the golf. Thanks. I get it to show you how I just dropped again, like on the right because it was sick. So he. He does that and, but it's cool man. He, he really like he loves golfing has invested so much of his time and into the parts of the game that he's so great and it really shows. I mean, he puts a lot of time in those and it's cool that it works out to because it's actually pretty fun to watch on TV, but also in person when you get a little bit dialed and he starts hitting things like kicking over and over and over again. What's the reaction of other members when he comes out to your home club, it's kinda like you're like, wow, I mean, they look at me the same way. There's two of you. There's two of you out your holy cow. I don't have enough sharpies. He nobody comes out. It's kinda cool because like I remember one time I my home golf course one of my own car golf course. I remember that coupled..

"Like, start helping them dress better, which he hasn't listened to me at all. I think he owns like seven leather jackets, which is seven too many. So no, but he's been great. And I mean, just fricking. Cool. It's just if you beat Phil Mickelson or someone one day you go home and you're like, dang, like I fill like, you know, it's like a huge confidence booster, and you know, and then when he beats you the other parts like, oh, cool. I lost a fifth. Like I'm still probably awesome. I golf quite literally what a thrill. What. But yeah, so it's been, it's been sweet him and Charley Hoffman down there and Brennan steel. So we've had some pretty cool games and learning experiences, and you also, I think the biggest lesson you can learn. He's still like a normal dude like he still like gets jacked up to play golf. He just like knows lot more and is better at hitting that golf ball than basically everyone. So that's like really the only big separation. But you know, he's just a guy like us. And I think that also put into perspective we were talking about earlier about my but set next year stop looking at these people like they're gods of some sort like it's just another round of golf, Phil Mickelson's great, but I've beaten him and I know it might just be at home, but like there's no reason that like can't kind of transfer over, but. You know, it's it's, I feel very fortunate to have even just met him alone, get the pigs brain a little bit. See, does he follow along your career and keep up to date on what you're doing? And you know, is one of those people that's texting you and that kind of stuff. Did he didn't a couple of weeks ago, he's busy. I get. But he he did actually, it was really cool man. Like right after I like I practice with him. I was this when I was really struggling and he'd text me about goes coming into the tour championship championships, try to get my car back and he said, hey, he sent me this long message like, hey, I know has been going well, but like you never know like this could be the week and deep down, like that's kind of how I looked at every week. It's like, maybe this is the week, like maybe this weekend, it's just he's the ultimate optimist. Which might go back to his whole life clothing thing working out at some point, but ultimately optimists and kind of like it's kind of infectious yet. Sure. This is the week like, yeah, I don't. Maybe I'm not going to have to hit twelve provisionals. Maybe this really will be good. So he's been cool, man. I mean, he gets a bad rap for the whole fig jam thing or whatever, but he's not. He's not like that. He's he's, he means it all. So like light light hearted. Let's just listen to you. Explain it. It's it's like a lot of the time. He's, he's just like, man, isn't this? Like isn't this an awesome big like like that we talk about like, look, I'll explain this to you like, oh, cool. Is this? It's like a sense of wonder. Don't you wonder how I'm spending this much. A lot about how I can spend it. So I love the the Greenbrier during the pro he's giving Larry FitzGerald chipping lesson in the other, hey, chip get over here. You're gonna. Wanna hear this. That's how he is. I look legitimately think he just wants everyone to be as good as him and also realize maybe like in the of rain rain be like, yeah, I know more, but I'm also so much better than I want you to know how first of all, how how hard this is, but how easy I make..

"I've unbelievable group of friends that supported me and never, you know, like you, you lose a lot of people when you do this. I got a lot less text messages obvious when you're playing bad about hanging out with my friends, stuck by me and cool to get texts from certain people and then be like man, like I know what you just did and like Dow's impressive. And I was like for the first time I was like, I agree like this one was cool because embarrassed. It's one thing to be bad at your job or to struggle. It's really hard like legitimately be embarrassed to be out there. I'm playing. It's Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson ROY macaroni and I'm like, shooting eighty and I'm losing. I thought, I think one term I lost in two rounds, fourteen shots the field in total driving, and it's just like, what are you doing out here? Do like? And I know you down on better than this, but you just think you get stuck in this rut and you know, glad, obviously, turned, I just wanted to leave a Mark of resiliency. And I thought that that would be that would be who I am. Some people are great hitting seven iron. Some people are great at putting. I'm going to be like the toughest guy you've ever met in my head how I kinda tried to spin it. Feel inspired. So. Along the way. I know you talked about, obviously all the work that you've done for yourself and your coach. One of the things we were talking about you or talking with you about through this week is you've gotten somewhat close to Phil Mickelson actually down in southern California, and I was just wondering if you share what you can about that relationship and you know the role he's played in kind of giving you some advice and almost being a mentor to to you. Yes, super lucky. Obviously, one of the greatest golfers of all time, and I live in our from him, got linked up with them. Sorry, playing some some rounds at home with him and it was a cool. I mean, if I had never said a word doing, but we played together, I would have learned something from him. I mean, he's so good at golf, and you see how he thinks and how he plots way around a golf course in the shots he can hit that. Like, I, you know, at the time hadn't even kind of considered, but then he was nice enough when I ask them questions. Like really give me like thoughtful answers. He let me practice with him. One day taught me all about how to prepare for tournaments, and he didn't even the only payment he required from me was.

"He said there, but I want to hear from you like what you were going through during that time with your golf swing and how how that had an effect on you mentally and how you're able to get back to where you are now today? Yeah, man, it was rough. A lot of people don't understand actually started in the web season the year before I had actually one and then just I don't really know what happened. It just went like it went fast. Goes, what goes my driver got like, I've never been a premier driver the golf ball, but I've been fine. I'm ball in play. I do. Yes. I'm no, no try, but I like stays in play and all of a sudden I'm out there and it's like I tell you where every obese steak is in the world. And it's just it's frightening. If a golf course had white stakes, I was like, oh nightmares. Is it hard to compete in professional Gulf when you're thinking that it would? Honestly, I didn't think it would be. Pricing difficult. Like I was like, wow, there should still be easy. I mean, okay. One off to out about some hint three off at sea, giving you all to shots hole. Yeah, so it became very difficult. So just kind of lost it. And then you know me and I changed coaches, so me and my new coach at the time, tough for him, and we had just started getting going and all of a sudden like we're like breaking things down as small as we can. And so I played terrible to end that season. And then came back out onto the PGA tour now and I'm like, holy cow, like not that I was that nervous. I was like, oh, this new opportunity. Maybe it's just like my mind was out of it and it just continued as I five cuts are not getting into anything golf courses are considerably harder and more demanding and all of a sudden..

"And now I have to deal like telling him to stand right here, don't move. Okay. Now you need to move here because like this guy's going to be in his through line. He also had this. I think I've. See also this watch that the alarm beeped every hour. So I like almost in the back of my mind had to recalculate what time it was. I knew how much time if I had run away. So he did that. So we play. The first hole goes fine. I'm telling you where to go. It's a lot of people don't get it. It's a lot of like extra energy like constantly know what you're going to do an like deal with somebody else. So actually I just I just basically motherhood. I'm so sorry. I did it for a few hours. I was really rude to me a man's waning over here. So I guess the second hole and it starts absolutely pissing and it's blowing forty and I was like, Rudy, I said, please stand over here. Don't worry about me. I put on my rain. Jack, I gave him the umbrella. I said, you say as dry Cambe please keep my clubs like as dry as you possibly can. And he's a 'cause we stood there and I got him somebody's anybody. I walk out from the umbrella, and I'm. Just like getting like crush just like getting. Absolutely slant. I'm trying to real high. I looked like I look like an idiot everyone else's. He's standing over them with the umbrella like the cool like PJ tour looking thing and my cat. He's staying dry of bone as I'm just getting destroyed by the rain. So then play that whole play the next hole and I'm walking to the green. And of course, like I had a towel that was us into the grips dry, not that you need to clean the golf because it was so but to keep the grips dry. And I look at Rudy on about the third hole and he goes, hey, no towel. I'm like, what he goes. I don't know where it is, and I'm like, oh, like I wanted to cry. This is like my welcome back to golf. I've been playing, you know, the season before it was easily the most embarrassing year of my life, and now come up as gopher says, really difficult water on every single shot. And I'm going to be the guy can't hold onto a golf club. It's just this is like the worst thing that could have happened and like I go around the rest of us trying Serge's keep anything dry. You can't, and God bless degrade great job, but I got super super lucky. The next day there was a massive rain delay, and we only play like seven holes maybe. So the next day we're gonna have to finish that round and then go into the essentially like the final two rounds. And after that round, I grabbed a caddy who had his player and missed the cut. And I was like, hey, man. Like can you just catty for me like wrestle week? And I had to say goodbye, sweet Rudy. But what was that conversation like with Rudy on to let them go? I was pretty nervous. 'cause he legitimately is the nicest person I've ever met. Does the hardest conversation. I was like, you know, this is going to be really difficult. I know you've been having a blast with me, but you know, I got this guy like it's not you. It's me like I'm not communicating well enough with you and you're doing everything right. But he was like, dude, I'm gonna pay. You. If you really need this, like we can keep going, but. Yes, I gave them the full boat which was like a quarter of what I normally base somebody, so it wasn't like this big deal, but he was fine with it. I mean, he literally never stops smiling for the two days. We hung out, got a lot to know him pretty pretty well. I mean, even touch. No, not not not sure the whole phone plan system there in the Bahamas, but it wasn't a wasn't super, super compatible, I think. Yeah, that's what it was you. You touched on it. They're come to come what you were coming off of. They're not to not to dwell too much on on the what you call the most embarrassing of your life. It's interesting..

"But if you know for, I don't know if you do get in like an official takes you off the golf course at the Monday and obviously doesn't make you grind that out. So I'm walking off the ninth green. I see action official up on the top of the hill at we were playing bayonet and I'm like, oh, sweet. Like I'm in and for, you know, pretty cool. He comes over. He's like, hey, you got in. I'm like, elated. My girlfriend caddying for me. Her joke is that she's a one annot and has never missed Monday qualifiers. I should hire her fulltime. So somehow those things are linked. And he's a guest. So you're in head on up there. Tiger actually was the one that withdrew and I said, hi, good joke. He goes, no dude, like tiger withdrew. And I'm like, gave me this look like you're going to have to deal with some questions like. And I'm like pretty pumped on like a little bit. Concern that we were all looking forward to coming back, get up to the course and I'm playing on liquid jitney did probably twelve interviews and I'm like the Lasca indeterminate like I, I mean, so little to this event like it's actually scared besides me being from California and giving free tickets to my parents. Like that's about the only value I brought it all to maybe like maybe they bought a water and contributed four dollars when I forgot to give them one from the player cooler. So so I got up there and they're like, I'm doing all these interviews, the beginning. I'm trying to be as cordial as I can. You know, I'm so sorry, Tigers in this event, but like it's so bitter sweet. Like, obviously, if I'm glad it's me that could fill a spa and all that stuff. And then finally after like six or seven, those two, I really, really wanna play in this event like I really need to do this kick him out. I didn't. It wasn't my fault withdrew like I, I was a Monday qualifier like get my own spot. And so it was just like silly, but it did show like how important it was, and that's. Actually end up working out. I met DJ and we did actually awesome. Scratch TV video flown out just because tiger is going to be all these tiger related videos, and then you land on the tarmac and all the text messages start coming in and it's like, oh, tiger withdrew boy. Really easy to get from Jacksonville. Did the text say, tiger withdrew, but. Or was it just was replaced by other. Other, I'll take. Local. Tiger wood golfer slash actor. We had your girlfriend caddying for you. Which reminded me we, we've been talking all week with you and Zach Blair and Curtis, and some other guys that are here for the web tour at this week, just about like really good caddy stories. You guys have all played on so many weird tours and so many weird events and curious what your your best caddy experience. Your funniest caddy expe-. They usually don't go hand my favorite caddy story. We have a lot because we go to South America and obviously don't have enough money to be flying down the who's who have caddies on the about. So we go to the Bahamas this year. I didn't think I was going to get into the first event of the season because I was playing on a pass champions category which is pretty low on the totem pole. But I obviously end up getting in and kind of week before kind of last minute starts searching for caddies because I hear that Bahamas will not have local caddies. They gave us a full warning, not on the on the web dot com tour that this all kind of went awry land in my first flight..

"I obviously awesome parents of we don't have a ton of money, but I, we did look at it like a bit of an investment. I mean, that's how my dad talked to me and he didn't talk to me and like negative way. He just like, no, I understood when I was twelve thirteen that money doesn't grow on trees, and it's expensive too. To do this. I remember even I saw one time. On the in the hotel room with my mom. We checked out on on the TV or whatever. And I guess all the price of the week for the hotels, holy hell, like you need to practice harder. This isn't supposed to be fun, but you know, my mom would take me a lot of the tournaments. My sister God bless her like she, I don't know much. She did that whole summer like she must have just been living on her own. My dad worked and you know, my mom and I contract with around, we didn't really venture out of the state very often just because it's too expensive and and all that. But I got into got into like the local junior tours. I think it was called the Toyota tour Cup, and then I got into Asia, but I do remember the first real real golf term. I played on a real golf course. I think I was eleven or twelve and I played played with this kidding. Philip Chan, who I'm actually still friends with and some other kid that they were both a year older. A couple years older, I think, and they, they kicked my ass like it was embarrassing. I think they both seventy and I shall eighty five. And I was like, I remember one of my, I like a big boy golf course like you had to, you know, I was like nude apart fives at the time. So you know, and I didn't play well, but it wasn't shocking. I remember I ask them like how often you practice at the time. I was playing flag football and basketball. All these other things like we have balls every day. And I remember I went into the car and like pretty upset and you know, my mom's like, you know how to go. And I said, hey, like, I don't know if this is reasonable, but like I need you to take me to the golf course every single day. And like I remember that that from that time on, I looked at it as a complete job like it's gonna be fun, of course, like anything in life can be. But I'm like, this isn't funny to me. It's not funny to play bad. It's not cool not to practice. It's not cool to go. The golf course in, you know, dick around like this is this is your job now and it kind of built of always been a very kind of self motivated person. And I think to your to your question about how do people do it? I think a lot of it comes from that. You just find it in your in your own heart and mind to be like, okay, like I'm a stick my stick myself to this job and I'm going to treat as such a young age and like I'm gonna have a single minded focus on. I'm going to play on the PGA tour and it was incredibly delusional at the time, like incredibly when I look back on it. I was nowhere near as good as. Kids, but I really think that it's probably rare to get. Eleven or twelve year old at work like that. And fortunately for me, I did, and I think that a lot of the people that are on the PGA tour and web dot com. Have done that in their life. And, but obviously blessed was awesome family and. You know, it's hard to do that. You hear a lot of stories about people that can't even afford to play. AJ's is so expensive and we made ends meet. And fortunately, it was very fun for me to make my first check and give some money back to my parents just as a big. Thank you. And I know that it wasn't the easiest of roads, so it was cool. Talk, talk through, have to ask about what your dad does because I feel like you could have absolutely gone down that path as well..

"I'm going to. I'm going to talk to them, but he's like awkward because I also like also I was trying to, like I said, play in a golf tournament and like he's warming up, which is a horrendous time to meet somebody because that's kind of your last time to be alone. And you know, gather your thoughts and. You know, he's going for these fifteenth major. I'm essentially just like against their ammonia there because I can't win any money. So. Have I sucked up when over k man like me and you have something in common. But no, I was like, hey. I'm max. Also playing golf tournament that are more more obligated to respond to this statement. But he said was super cool. He's like, oh, man, you know, like play while this week. Awesome. You're out here and I was like, oh, man, like and it was a rush. It was really exciting to finally meet him and find out that he was a really cool dude. Like, I think he's misunderstood that week. I really well pretty close now. Yeah, he even like asked me, he's like how that conversation. Cool. There's so many people that just hound him. I can't imagine I at one point. I was like, of course I'll sign I had never seen autograph cosign all the audit graphs like anybody wants. And like even one day I was playing with speeds achieved. Yes. Never changed me. Gosh, all the money in the world Tigers just like lazy and I was playing with speed in the practice round, and he was just getting famous. I think he had had won the John Deere, but I don't think he had he hadn't won the masters or anything yet, so, but he was still obviously Uber famous and we're walking in signing autographs left and right and people are going bonkers over. I'm fine. Like I was getting tired of it. And I started actually like my role was like, I would walk ins people. Can I get this kinda autograph Kaga if I said, if you can tell me my name, I will give you whatever you want. Never for. I'll never forget able to. I'll never forget that. Coming up like our seventeenth hole. I said that to the kid, I like there's probably kit around my age. I said, honestly, I said, if you can tell me my name right now, I'll give you whatever you want on my back. Not a club, like on my bag. You have my head covers. You can have any amount of want. And he like legit like Jordan, shrug me. So that was humbling, but that was fun. But yeah, he the fact that Tigers to that, like literally every single day of his life, it kind of shocks me that he is even like halfway normal. We saw we will Todd Hamilton, like quiz kid like, all right, what's what's nine times five divide by three and the kid like, got it wrong. Okay. Sorry. And walked away nine memorial. It was incredible as Mike when my favorite. How I mean. Wrong moves. I guess you win one major and it's just like, yeah, yeah, whatever you want, it must be rough to be as famous as him and me, obviously. So did your. You said your dad played a little bit, but I mean your parents were not like junior golf, parents, I, I'm gathering, you know, no, not at all. So what was their story and then how did you guys go from kind of how did you? I'm always fascinated by how people navigate that kind of world because it's really fucking weird. "Go on back play, and it was like, it was so fun, but it's it's lucky golf is not exactly like a kid sport. You kinda have to get a little bit fortunate in the sense that it's slower and it's not nearly as fun as a basketball game or playing football or whatever. So. I got lucky where we grew up on a very cool junior program where they made it very interesting, and you know, way more fun than it usually usually intensity and then got to a play golf at UC Berkeley and. Kind of started. I obviously taking it seriously, but then when you get to call, it really is like a fulltime job fulltime fulltime and we had a great team. One of the best teams, I think in college golf history. Plaguing some great golfers and we'll let me stop you there because you're being a little bit modest. You were telling us last night, some more detail, but for folks from when you played that first part five to what you're at, one of the best. No, it just clicked after the par-five. Awesome. God wait. Tow people why that team might not be remembered for being the greatest team ever? Yeah. And kind of what you guys were able to accomplish? Yeah, we my senior year, it was kind of one of those. Cool. Obviously, UC Berkeley is not like a powerhouse name in any sport, really. But we had a cool situation where we had myself Brandon Hagan Michael Weaver, Michael, Cam, and Joel Salter. And we had all kind of been maybe like UC. Berkeley was our second or third choice, and we had a couple of people redshirt. Michael Kim came in, Joel Salter came in and my senior year, everybody was on, like all five of us were ready to go ready to play, and we went out there and I don't know we, we all blocked out for like a solid eight months. And we we won eleven of thirteen play events. The two we lost by one stroke each, and we got to nationals in the whole reason that the season just like did not and appropriately was because it's matchplay now and we won the strokeplay portion in three days by thirteen and then got to match play. We actually be John roms Arizona state team in the first round, and then play Thomas Peters team, Illinois who they have. They had a great team that him and Brian Campbell. And I think Thomas de tree and their team was was sick, but we played them in, came down to me and Thomas on the twentieth hole for the, you know, to get into the finals play just in Thomas's Alabama team and we lost it stunt, man. There's no excuses that's the format, but it was kind of lame. We had lost to. That was our like thirteen. We had lost two all season and they had lost four that week, so wasn't wasn't the greatest thing ever. That was kind of disappointing, especially for me 'cause they all got another year to play that year was the most fun you could imagine, especially for golf, which is obviously not a team sport it was it was. I mean, we felt like Tiger Woods must feel every day of his life, but like everywhere we went like, you know, if we play all right, we'll probably win. And it was like so delusional, but so much fun at the same time and. No, I guess we, I guess actually now I don't feel so bad about losing because I know Justin Thomas needed another trophy in his trophy case. We kinda gave him one. So big deal. Yeah. I mean, honestly, he was probably really nervous about playing me the next day. So I'm so glad of that. Didn't have to happen for them. Let me pause that to tell that's exactly the same as my high school. Gulf me break that tournament by turning you get your being modest as you did win the NCAA the individual title that week as well. Yeah, I did. And the Pac twelve. Yeah, just. I think tiger is one that texted me, but he says, just me him and Phil of done it. We won't. We won the Pac twelve and then nationals thous while I hadn't actually never won outright college golf tournament tied one and then got tip Pac twelve is in my hometown and played well, and then went to nationals in. I mean, that was obviously the time..

"max homa" Discussed on No Laying Up

"Like I feel great, but there's something in there when I get on that, I t word starts to be like, okay, let's let's let's go play some good golf. Like, let's see. Let's see if we can play some good golf instead of like, dude, screw this. Like let's go ball out, like, let's go win this thing. Let's go be the one that shoots sixty one today. Like why not like you're playing great. So that's that's the dumbest part about questioning yourself, especially when you already made it to the highest level. It's one thing if you're bouncing around many tours or whatever, and you're like, okay, like obviously need to get a little bit better somewhere. Like I should question what I'm doing and maybe change it if you make it to the j. tore you're probably doing quite a bit great. Like like not well like great. So you know, I'm looking forward to to trust myself this year and seeing where it gets me because I think I honestly think it's going to be a great year. I think I, I'm a slow learner in that sense. And I think that I'm finally starting understand it quite a bit more. What were some of the things that. That you were questioning your that you're like specific things in guys practice routines? What was that? Like? It's like the smallest stuff like I'll watch. For instance, cage HR is the one of the best players will ever see came to mind to. Talking about guys learn. Yeah. The hammer drill. Yeah. And he teaches a lot of people on Hayes hick like he's so sick. So like I'll watch him hit a bunker shot and it's so dumb because he is the best bunker player and I'm like, I can never do that. I guess you probably could if you spend a little more time instead, I'm like in the bunket on my man. Caja would totally get this up right now. What are you doing so much pressure on it and then you know, watching some people hit it far, whatever Balshaw he's always been more of my thing, but I played with Charles Howell the third, my rookie year, I think maybe the third or fourth and I was floored. Like how good he hit a golf ball, and then I start changing all this stuff about my golf swing. I'm like, man, I'm not built for this. And then I like played a whole year and then maybe another year and I'm like, nobody hits this good like that. Dude is the greatest ball Shrek I've ever seen high will ever see like he's just the best at this. So instead of having any faith at all in the whole, the whole game of golf chipping putting through the bag, which I think. Have very few, like you know, glaring weaknesses. I'm looking at every single person's like little thing. They're great at and I'm like, gosh, like how do I get there? And you're kinda like, dude, like, okay, let's take this step-by-step. Keep practicing it. You're probably not as like deficient there as you think you are. Let's, you know, hold the brakes and just keep trying to get the ball in the whole very quickly instead of being so ill because then you get in a bunker near like the guy said, gosh, like I bet show these guys do this all the time. It's really easy. It really. They don't do it every time you know you, the TV, you know, audience watches the leaders and the leaders in golf tournaments make every twenty foot or it seems like and whole album shots and get up and down from everywhere. And then you look at the guy who's in twenty fifth, which is a great offer, and maybe he's playing pretty good things are going as way and it doesn't look nearly as easy as that. So I got kind of caught up and all that. And you know my whole Gulf junky type like outlook on suffer. I just wanna keep learning getting better was kind of kind of put me back a little bit in the sense that I was trying so hard to learn how to be like the best literally every part of golf, which is a little bit unrealistic. I mean, speaking of learning, what would you what would you say you learned this week from your first game of wolf? Hammer. I learned that I'm not smart. Enough to play wolf him just way too much going on. I learned that we were talking about it..
