How's that clear putting them in a cute outfit for a second all but he is taken care of you safe now but I do think it's incredibly cute when that happens it's can't I love it so much and it does happen periodically feeling the internet will give us that at least once a year of not every six months of some tenderhearted? "Like the dog's life we really WanNa put you in the shoes and the person shoes at the dog benefited from. I think we did a really good job of that. There's another one With Togo. I mean there's just so many great stories I know John has a couple he wanNA share. I love a Balto Alaskan dog that saves the whole city. They carried a medicine for miles and miles over six hundred. It's made a huge fan of the show. I love it so much I every time but yet like these because it is not only her role we can like oh they were so brave but almost in like how how were they able to do this like defying the odds of what should be capable for the. What's really cool the show too? It's the emotion motion. It's the connection between owner dog. Goes into and I think that's a great story like how they connected. They weren't Together there's a point in that story when the weather's horrible horrible and they can't even see in front of them and it's literally up to the dogs to get them there and it's just that trust I gets in there and it's just like these really heart wrenching them anyways. Yeah but we also cover kind of like letter stories like the Royal Corgis. And I'm like it's like it's like that but it's also if you think about the royal family how insulated they are and they can't road there kinda lonely only the Corgis are their best friends in many cases and so it's It's really interesting especially war to the family. kind of rallied around the court and like I got him through in many ways kept the Mike from obviously all the stress. So it's like all these tidbits just really fascinating seeing what dogs really like the benefit really have and being able to display that to the world and and now that dog tales really has taken off as been. It's been amazing to see on the e mails engagement on social media. We've never seen anything like this. And we've been doing in podcasting or four years and I mean we've done now hundreds of millions of downloads across roof as a whole right and this show is not our big show but it could be a show very soon if it keeps you in like three minutes. Give it a SEC. John's really impatient now. We have very high high expectations for this interview view. So we think after this interview. That's me the biggest show podcast. Yeah I don't see how it genuinely. I don't know if we have a listener. Who Won't fall in love with the show immediately? It is because 'cause you can also just go through your apple. podcast views of every single person is just like a cried definitely grade but it's just yeah. The celebration of dogs is incredible. You guys are making the favourite show. Well we're we're very lucky and and you know it's it's it's just it's really white space. You know what I think about Lake Park cast and now we have forty shows trying to figure out what's an F.. Show you guys do an amazing job without your podcast. There's probably nothing else really in like the space. In my opinion that is really on par. With what you guys are doing and I thought there was a way for us to tell these stories obviously and more narrative in different approach to it. And so there's only two podcasts out there there's there's probably room for many more so What I'd say is listeners? Like go create a dog podcast. I think it's definitely a future. I'm trying to pitch a show to Max. It's here I think after tonight onto on on manatees MANDL's I would manage details. I think could be something one hundred. What do we think we have enough? Stories of Aerobic manatees. They're lazy serious problem. Jolly I misunderstood exactly. It'd be great. Sounds like a spin off to be I love it. You also mentioned that you have Just a little bit of insight of stories that might be to come. Can you give us a little hint of some other dogs. We get here about John you honestly. Why do I go ahead? I said we should. I'd say a non thinking. Okay well because you guys have forty podcasts on the network and a million things that you have to do I will not keep you forever. I will make you come back though From time to time to me more about the show. So we've got player famous game name that dog we do it based on things that we've already talked about in the interview. Obviously we've got golden retriever. We've got bijon freeze. What if we squish them together to make a muppet golden retriever? And it's a boy. What are we going to name this doc rocky leisure and Max for the Wind I wanna I do have an answer you you do okay? What you did and it goes with with me with my trend of saying you know ending in like the y Type Sound Ray Fosse oh man wolf will not? Here's where it's for me to weigh in because Rocky is my favorite movie. Fosse is my favorite muppet. So I think it's a tie. I think usually pick a winner no just for this time. I've decided that we're GONNA make it competitive for a white pick a winner. Good instinct won't hold it against you if you choose rocky. Lucky I can't pick away. I can't I really. We can go again. You can give me new names and I could do it based off that this currently pick a winner Fuzzy Ozzie Fuzzy Wednesday okay. All right all right Alexis votes for all right all right. Can you please tell our listeners. One they've fallen in love with Youtube so I don't are you on social media. Can they follow you. They can't single married. Okay yes yes exactly so. Please follow me on John. He's a stand up comedian I'm on twitter and I'm on instagram. You can follow me. On twitter. At Max Cutler One and on Instagram at am Cutler. Thirty one perfect now. "Or who is the founder of podcast as well as John Cohen who is the content lead of podcast. Perk is incredible and has a brand new show called dog tails. You guys. If you're not listening to it you have to. You'RE GONNA lose your mind but I fell as well Thank you for having us. Thank you for being now. I will tell you that normally emily I say welcome so happy to have you do not talk about what you do. I only WanNa talk about dogs but because what you do is one of my new favorite podcasts. Were allowed to. We're going to have to talk about but I didn't do either of you have dogs right now. I don't at you so I used to have three dogs. That's why I wanted to create the show dog tales. An honor about you buy my first dog ever had winston. Look at. If you look at Max's wallpaper on his phone you're going to see a a picture with him and it's just turn off your phone and now you got to turn back Winston I will. There's there's once I was an only child growing up essentially had older half brother but really it was only one so my dogs were my best friends. And so It occurred to me that there wasn't many podcasts. Odd casts out there that we're talking about dogs and specifically heroic dogs loose stories and dogs are in many ways is Geraldo is humans and so That's kind of a dog. Tales is super excited. Yeah we'll argue more heroic Lu dr even more rogue than wins so okay. You've had three dogs. Uh We had Winston who are the other two Winston and Ian Higgins all golden retrievers. Goldens are we'll what was your experience because we found over the course so the show. They are just incredible but sometime maybe not the smartest. How were your pops to them? We're not the smartest smartly Marla tell you. That's why I'm doing dog. Winston smarter than the other was. He was the thought. He was a philosopher. If you can like tailpipe pipe there will be a full moon. He'd be staring at the moon all night and they'll be like and he'd always looking outside like just like you'd be in his own thoughts was it's very clear right and then unfortunately we had one Antoniacci passed away of cancer relatively young. I'm sorry but when when the pass was his sister and like every time there was just staring in the mirror like he went through almost like a depression state and it was the most relatable human trait trae ever seen and I was pretty young at that time. Right All right like there was something special that Winston. Yeah you could just tell. And they don't frigging Winston still with us when soon forties passed away but he had a long life is good hyung-do Winston make it fourteen years for a golden dog impressive Jeff Golden. That's incredible yes. It was the other to not make it. As nearly as long Winston Winston he was a fighter. Good why we live Winston mazing and then okay so right now. You're currently only a dog. Wants her dogs. I live in an apartment and I were quite a bit in travel and so the truth is I don't think it'd be fair to have dog right now and I can't bring into the office yes Alexis and I will be the first tell you that having a permanent August so much work boys it a lot so I think you're making a good choice. Well dog soon but yes right right now. It's a good choice and then John Dogs do not have dog. Currently my parents still slow the dog But I did grow. Grow up with with the dog I was driving over here. I was thinking about when held all when we got our dog and it was. I remember as my eleventh birthday and I I want a dog badly. I grew up You know typical of a sister. You know parents. Obviously the the family was missing parents. I I do. Extra was not raised by parents and the family was missing. Something I just feel it you know so I wanted onto dog So we went to a shelter and I was there. Was this dog. That was drooling profusely and got the dog. But I was fixated on that I think my dad then saw this other this other cute dog And it looks like a muppet and I and I love the muppets. Closer to this day and I I remember I reached my hand in the in the cage and he lifted an. That's that's the one that's our guy now. His his his in his previous name was Pumpkin. And I said there's no way we're staying with pumpkin sound. If you have a dog or children are same. Pumpkin I apologize but not a great. My kids named Pumpkin out there. Just like all right man right right but I. There was a name that he looked like it and this is every time I say his name they go. Who Was it if the people doing sore now it? It was named Barney Crane. Green Yanic Greenwich Green Rubble. Except for something more yes DJ. Exactly I feel like any dogs named it ends like like with With a Y.. Yeah works great solid could be anything right And Barney was a perfect addition family. Really was Why does the dog's name out ten with Wi- to be a perfect catchy? What Wally Waller Old Charlie go on for Charlie with wine why now off ramp but did conducive to up? Yeah so love me the most and which is fine. It didn't work out it that way but did Barney love the most. I'll tell you which is which is somewhat interests so my mom was not a pet person whatsoever. She was literally like allergic to everything. Oh cat and dog that you could possibly find whatever so it was. This was gonna be a tough thing for Barney. My mom to get along But what happened is that they the closest uh-huh my mom was not did to Barney. Yep and they had a relationship that nobody could top. I mean she was. She was a homemaker so she was home with him most of the day. And and all that He was obsessed. He was obsessed with her so much of and he had like you know I think I think all of our dogs we think alike. These human characteristics there there are. There are dog whatever rate I remember this one time. She was lay on the couch On her back and like Her legs up up in the air. A little bit and Barney was laying on the other side right same position and their feet were touching. Oh No it was the cutest thing in the in the world and she did not. I put her feet on his feet now. He Barney wanted to have all the tact in the world. Yeah but yeah Barney was made our family me. Congress include a kept it altogether and he had a nice long life and we hear all the time good dog was going to say yes so I was GonNa Muppet but did we figure out. What kind of Bernie was it was a Mutt? It was it was an I asked. My sister sent me a picture and the picture is not serving. Justice was a hassle hassle. We're not seeing that. We're not seeing Barney. I mean I'll show it to you but it's not it's not. It's not party at its peak. You know what I'm saying. So it was half the sean freeze and half Lop saw. We know if you can picture that. Yeah I can. I can get the best of both worlds. Right there. cutty really Chubby MUP- perfect perfect. No but we hear that all the time. It's the person who didn't want the dog that is like oh well we become the best of friends out. Oversaw this coming. Yeah exactly. It's amazing Now you guys so we have a we have to. We've got to talk about your show. It is so you we used to have a little baby segment on the show. We ran out of topics real fast but it was was dog. Heroes and our listeners loved it they went crazy for it and this is all that this podcast. We definitely didn't you didn't even come close to know. ooh because you guys are doing like you the full story so you had us on to confront us about what not to say that. I think it's genius that this is a topic that our listeners owners really resonated with. But we didn't have the resources to do the research into like find the intricate details of the story. No no it was us in Google and are we gonna get to the bottom of it you guys can and I just I will tell you this. I've not listened to an episode. That didn't make me cry because it's dark heroes and the other so brave But I was wondering if you could tell me some of the stories of the episodes you guys already have our out. Yeah I mean we can tell you stories. That are outsourced coming but I mean just in general I think I think you really hit a good point about like the research goes into this show. So maybe it's even taking a step back about Parkas. Real quickly makes parkas special. Is We have a full team. A falstaff of now almost seventeen researchers that low interest research every podcast that we ran fat. Check every podcast that we do and you know historically have done a lot of dark side of history okay. True crime conspiracy theories mystery but everyone in our office loves dogs and so like we had a dog podcast rights. And but I also want to do it in a way that we took it just as seriously As everything else if found the facts and so we have a whole team dedicated to like searching heroic dog stories finding the facts telling their stories trying to sell it on it so I was just something that I wanted to share it but I mean in general. We're doing topics from anything. Like buddy the first American seeing eye dog The story is hilarious. Actually in many ways because buddy was a female dog like one of the one of my little tidbits always say is. I wasn't aware of that so The first American seeing eye dog uh-huh when when buddy was introduced applying blake on the actual real name. But she owes kiss and the guy was like you know in his twenties trying to find a wife and and he was like. I can't call kiss when I'm walking the streets like I'm GonNa call you buddy in my mind. That's how I don't know if that's the right boy when I read this and it was named buddy and like since then there has. There's there's five seeing I'd name Buddy Since then they don't call them buddy anymore out of respect and on their stories like that that really are emotional in the sense that we want. We Really WanNa feel like the dog's life we really WanNa put you in the shoes and the person shoes at the dog benefited from. I think we did a really good job of that. There's another one With Togo..

Fezzet upon first assessment by me me is a rare Colorado pygmy hippo disguised as a six year old English bulldog with a brown and white coat. He's a mic with two or more sees boy weighing in about sixty five pounds and excels at warming up bath mats in his mediocre beds. He loves SHORT WALKS BELLY RUBS EAR rubs especially his left ear and and chasing a ball which he will then carry around without returning for about twenty minutes. He loves to play with Steffi's some he likes to preserve others. He loves to destroy which we call the mayhem mm-hmm when he's really excited the noise. That exits has body can only be described as the call of the velociraptor. This is when the pygmy hippo becomes a zippo with AV as in velociraptor he has several nicknames the aforementioned pygmy hippo Ph for short video Fez Fezzet Fezzet Keno and bugs and time man Rachel. Their minds on super long. But you all right. Well now I feel like you should go. I know it's just that last week talking about how I moved left. Yes and I think officially live in my new place because chrome has decided where he has accidents in the house now now did add. He assigned that in the old house as well So where was it in the old house the old house. It was sort of Next to that very heavy piece of furniture I was talking about us. We have in office in the dining room table. Great and now now it is so the stairs work. It's like a couple of stairs like a landing pad and then a couple of more stairs is right on that landing stairs. He loves it POOP. Just right right there. Why else would they put a landing pads landing pads instead? It's what else I it's I don't know what else you want to land here. I guess is as good as mine doc. Yeah that's because he does he rings a little bell of course but occasionally someone not right there and he's like well. How would it make accents because you know how to train dogs? You've done all the research excellent and it wouldn't make sense to put a bell on the landing pad your got your seconds. I don't want to confuse him with another. I don't know what's a dog's brain. Will I want to give to responses bounces one. Is I wanNA empathize with you. Because it always frustrating really come on man. Please stop on the other hand boy. That's Cute Ace Q.. Okay okay. Why not okay? I'm asking because earlier. I guess we are giving each other gifts can get you a garden gnome to put on the landing so so it looks like a backyard. It'll be charming. Okay fine you convince me now. I think the goal really is to get him to not like that area. Make it smell weird. Sit there okay. So how did the opposite of what you're saying but it could smell weird with a garden. Oh Yeah Yeah I've I've been to Google. It'll tell you smell dogs. Don't like carrots. Doug hates carrots so if you WanNa if you WANNA spray carrots Oh really yeah interesting. Yeah no he apples. He likes an apple yes I think he gets to Karen. He thinks it's an apple and then he's mad at it interesting because yeah chrome super into him into it and I used to when he's teething. Here's a little little hack seething. I would take carrots and then kind of a wash them over with Chicken Broth on the frozen chicken broth carrot. You're the world's greatest mom. Thank you so nice and now I'm curious. "We're excited to begin part two of live from spotify immediately. Thanks for we're having here spotify. You all fantastic we are joined by Max Cutler who is founder and managing director of Park Studios at spotify right. Let's give him a welcome. So Max Jack and our chatting about this beforehand and we haven't and done that many interviews but one thing we were told interviews as you shouldn't go personal right off the bat so we want to do the opposite of that and start really personal. We were curious you you started a company basically with your dad that has been acquired by spotify Nikolai. Both dads they're both lawyers and they would have loved if we had started yard companies with them. But here's the thing. Both of our dad's still ask their receptionist to print out their emails that they can read them and neither of them know what a podcast. I think it's like fly-fishing thing. They have no idea so tell us what was it like starting a company with your dad and also what was your pitch to investors like that first first elevator pitch cool. Thank you for having me so I didn't have an elevator pitch because I started with my dad exactly so essentially when when I it's always been a dream of mine to start a company number one and to work with. My Dad was something I always wanted to do. In January of two thousand sixteen. I really had no idea what I want to do with life. I loved audio. I've been a huge podcast fan for a long time. I grew up in a radio household I went to my dad was like. Hey I WANNA do a podcast to your point. My Dad's like what's a podcast And so that was interesting and so once I kind of got him into the podcasting space got interested. He quickly realized that wasn't for me. Wanted me to do it so two weeks in my dad said that she said Max have fun. This is kind of your baby. Go with it and since then my dad has been my sounding board. He's always been there for probably one person. I can't talk to about a lot of the issues that used to go on podcast before we were now acquired by spotify and really know the goal behind Parkas my launch. It was to do to do podcast differently and for us that meant narrative storytelling. I meant went out. Researching the competition and post production. That I felt was probably the best. That'll weekly basis At that time the biggest show is where this series of the world six to thirteen eight episodes highly produced but also took nine months to produce cost tonnes of money and I didn't feel like that was the most profitable model so I had to think about like. How do I do with the basis? This volume is king. I want to build habits days of the week. I want to own literally hours now like horoscope. Today is a prime example of. I want to own five minutes. If somebody's day you guys do daily. PODCAST is what I'm talking about. You want to build that habit. And so we launched with unsolved murders true crime stories in on June thirteenth. Two Thousand Sixteen. Its way out there. There's voice actors. It's almost like an old time radio play. It's a good field at all time. Yeah Yeah I love how. It's diff- people in the PODCAST base. Remember first podcast. Ours was may twenty third two thousand eighteen ever. It's a big day birthday. The thirteen is actually really interesting. Then serial killers launch on February thirteenth. And so maybe that's it. Maybe I should be watching shows on the thirteenth thinking about a lot. But uh-huh in general you know that one show is a huge for us. I literally had enough money for eight episodes which you know. 'cause they didn't raise money luckily after four episodes it was big enough for for me to go to a company called mid. We're all convinced him to sell for us. An kind of the rest is just kind of falls in place so one thing Jack and I do as snacks daily Max is we jump into the earnings reports and go deep and we were curious about spotify latest during this report we noticed they mentioned the word. podcast like thirteen times or something and the word music only nine times. What does that mean to you? Well when we WANNA be the audio destination right and we're committed to podcasting just like we're committed to music however the a lot of bets on podcast and we've been open about spending a lot of money in the podcasting space. We owe it to our investors to tell them how it's still and it's great to see that in Q.. Three streaming was up three nine percent. And it's working. PODCASTING is really working. It's very additive to the experience which is really important. So it's not like someone's coming here not listening to music anymore. They're listening to music analysts. Say The podcast. This is a huge huge moment for spotify. I'm Gonna I bring up something. That may bug you Max but your dad probably loves Americans spend on average an hour and forty six minutes per day listening to the radio by the same report also told us that Americans spend forty five minutes a day listening to radio and other podcasts. Like on in the after on the toilet very revealing. What's the deal with? This primitive listening device still being so quarter American culture well. I don't think it bugs hugs me. What an opportunity? Not like amazing an hour and forty six minutes that we can convert people to podcast. And that's what's going to happen in the future technology advances. So you know. My Dad was in radio for a long time. He built his career in radio. What I got to see in the early two thousands was tons of people being laid off? This is a really unique time. That jobs are being created in the podcast base. audio jobs are coming me back. Readers are now able to make a living doing a podcast. That wasn't the case in radio right and so I look. There's a huge opportunity. I it's amazing opportunity from the content side. Innovate formats to kind of think about. How can we add technology? That's what spotify obviously plays a huge role now with a playlist. Kind of giving you that radio. podcasts experience I mean the futures. He's here we're working on some amazing technology of the next couple of years that I believe will really eat into that our forty six minutes. Well if you're listening on the radio and you're converting an starting tillis on podcast. One of the challenges challenges you may face during that transition period. You're talking about is discovery which is funny because one of things Jack and I talked about all the time is as podcast greater a big challenge. We face is discovery getting snacks. Daily out there. How does spotify or how do you think that problem get solved will discover ability has literally been broken in the podcast based since probably forever at at this moment time which is great because spotify fixing and what I mean by that is we're doing playlists? We now have your daily podcast right which is essentially discover ability personalization for you. That's going to help creators. Like yourself found be discovered increase more listening time or downloads. Right now I mean this goes back to like Wha Parkas name so simple. It's because I want to own words I really WANNA own conversations. I WANNA own. Seo Serial killers of someone's wants to hear a serial killer podcast they had to go type in serial killers right. That's what you think. And so now it's really exciting is as we are working on ways to enhance cover ability on spotify which is going to be not only beneficial for monetization but also billionaire audiences. Well one funny anything that Jack and I've noticed when it comes to like actually growing on spotify is that when we're listening on spotify sometimes we're paying customer. WHO's not expecting into here at? Yeah that brings up point as he premiums spotify customer. I'm paying nine ninety nine per month but I still get the ads when it comes to podcast. We're trying to figure this Out To be honest okay. Let's talk about so the bottom line is podcast or adds podcast is part of our DNA. It's been around forever we we can't we want to enable and help critters make a living with podcast for us to go and say take out. Your ads is just wrong. It's not really right. And so we also know that sixty something something percent of podcast listeners Achy joyless ads and going naturally purchase products that are pitched and so overall I would make the case. I don't necessarily think ads is a horrible thing in the podcast space indefinite on we think of the whole entire catalogue business and growing that with craters full disclosure. Jacqueline actually had a lot of fun doing ads back in the day. It was our greatest creative challenge to do the twenty the third rendition of the Pitney. Bowes ad it's a business machine that can fact stuff. It's like a printer but way bigger so max and other question. If I WANNA watch Netflix show I watch on Netflix. To Watch Hulu Movie You have to watch on Hulu. Disney is only on Disney plus in video content is married to one platform. Is there a future where snacks daily has to pick a platform up. What we're going to be on walls we'RE GONNA go up with memberships? Well what I would say is. Let's look at Park is a prime example right now. All parkas shows are distributed. There's really no plan to change that. I think that in the in the coming year twenty twenty we have to. I have to decide like what makes sense to be exclusive to spotify. What doesn't make sense? Maybe no shows spotify maybe half of them are exclusive spotify but right now the podcast base is a whole is growing which is really interesting. spotify is going so when you look at this podcast landscape. Then we're there are a lot of options you've got like apple which basically created the concept you've got google which is basically Google you've got spotify which become a fast growing powerhouse in the space but what is the spotify competitive advantage when you look there. Oh well there's a lot of advantages for spotify but definitely discover ability personalization. We're the best in class doing that for a long time when it comes to music. We're GONNA do that podcasting. We really haven't flip the switch as much as like we're going to in two thousand twenty when it comes to that. which is really exciting? When I think about you know I think of myself as a creator? I've create a lot of the podcast shows like picking up my shows. Now have a better chance to be discovered is like so excited and so. That's a huge advantage. deftly over the whole entire space. Can you tell us what was the first podcast. You listen to your favorite podcast. That's a great question. Well you can't say snacks daily you don't have to so my favorite podcast is missing legends. I've always been a huge huge venomous and legends. I think it's a storytelling great. I'm engrossed by Jason in terms of the first one I believe and might have actually been Joe Rogan a long time ago. Wow the and what have you seen change when it comes to the contents then like the style the formatting you know before we were chatting about like five things we think are the ingredients gotta bake in. What are kind of the things you think? You've gotTa make successful podcast. Well there's a lot of things I mean hooks you were talking about. That is really important. I think you have to be careful with how you open. Show I think the biggest mistake most podcasters make as they aref for five or ten minutes. You have no idea what the show is. Seen as you get into it sooner or quicker get the audience's attention immediately looking at twenty twenty and just even now is like four minute. Ovation's going to be key. You're doing short short run episodes and longer run episodes even a long episodes. Or what fifteen. Sixteen minutes PARKAS started with that. I think people really love snack. Content TAT so horoscopes. Today is a prime example today. Shoe cry which are the only daily true crime podcast. I believe fifteen minutes length in law length and then also in twenty twenty do we. You want to release episodes depending on what time of day we WANNA look like. Go go tar. There's a lot of things to do so but six hundred thousand seven thousand podcast out there. You have to figure out how to be different through a format standpoint. Congratulations on building parkas studios for selling to spotify for being part of the team. That is really pushing forward. The podcast industry. I mean Nick and I have seen firsthand. That spotify is really focusing on podcast. Where some of the other platforms? It's a side hustle kind of thank and we really love the efforts making to introduce podcast more people. Because you know I think podcasts are radio on demand that you can listen to any time and that a wonderful multitasking tools as we mentioned earlier so as a millennial who doesn't have enough time it's a wonderful productivity hack to have a companion in my ear with me beside me while we do things it's great that you produce so many shows up podcast and are contributing spotify. Now we'll thank you. I mean it's awesome. It's Sir I wouldn't be at spotify. Didn't believe in the mission that we're doing here.
