"EP sports I'm shark Freeman The Golden State Warriors made it look easy and gave one of the NBA's Western Conference Finals a lopsided one 1287 win over Dallas Steph Curry had 21 says the offense was in full throttle We had a couple possessions and third quarter we got in trouble but for the most part we were pretty decisive Warriors were helped when the Mavs high scoring guard Luka Dončić was held to a quiet 20 on 6 of 18 shooting NHL playoff openers Carolina used Ian Cole's overtime goal to beat the New York rangers two to one Oh good obviously Winning the game is what matters You know kind of getting our first taste of OT is great High scoring a fair in Calgary the flames beat Edmonton 9 to 6 on the hat trick from Matthew chuck To baseball the LA Dodgers have won 5 in a row Mark Myers reports on a 5 three win over Arizona The game turned in the fourth inning when the Dodgers put up four runs turning a two to one deficit into a 5 two lead Justin Turner had the big blow a three run Homer off Zach Davies Colorado down San Francisco CJ Crone's three run shot in the 8th inning lift at the rockies to a 5 three win Kesten Hiro made his return to the major is a good one He smashed a two run Homer at the bottom of the 11th inning and it lifted Milwaukee to a 7 6 comeback win over Atlanta Guys the game went on at basketball better and I think there's some opportunities where I kind of missed out on So you just wanted to just want to get the runner over Nick pavetta is two hitter carried Boston pass Houston 5 to one New York mets beat St. Louis 13 to four Zack Wheeler tossed 7 shutout innings in Philadelphia's three zero win over San Diego Command was good for the most part It wasn't all the way there but it was good for the most part Get away with some pitches for sure Other winners Washington Pittsburgh the New York Yankees Texas Minnesota Kansas City Seattle and Tampa also won The PGA Championship will begin today without Bryson DeChambeau who withdrew because of his surgically repaired wrist Check free button AP sports

"As the secondary guy, and then you look at the warriors and you go, oh, man, clay could clay could go for 35 tonight. And there's this guy named Jordan Poole who can come in and he can drop 30 on any given night. I just think there's too many options there to try to shut down even for a good Mavs defense and ultimately that's going to carry the warriors all the way through to the finals. Again, though, I think this is going to be another battle. I think that the Mavs are better than people are giving them credit for, and we're going to wind up with a close series. That's what I'm hoping for. I don't want to see a bunch of blood blowouts again. Absolutely. But I do think the warriors wind up wind up taking this. Yep, completely agree. Yeah, I think, you know, I think we're in for two hard fought competitive, hopefully very entertaining Conference Finals here. We're down to you know what I do. I start counting games or down to 21 games left in the season for a maximum I want as many of them as we can get. Speaking of which, we will be on playback tomorrow night to do game one. Of Mavs versus warriors. So make sure you use the link in the description down below and you come join us over there on playback. We'll be doing the live play by play. We'll be talking basketball with you guys. It's gonna be a lot of fun. So come join us over there. Again, I'm gonna put the link in the description over on YouTube. So come join us for that Keith. I can't wait. I know you're excited for the draft lottery tonight and Celtics versus heat, which are gonna be great, but yeah, I'm excited to get to do more play by play with you. Yeah, no, man. We had so much fun. It's just a blast. So yeah, I'm super excited for that too. All right. Well, I think that wraps things up for today. Covered a lot of stuff when in depth into a lot of things. Hopefully everybody enjoys Miami versus Boston tonight. Maybe you'll join me and just kind of not paying attention, putting my fingers in my ears and saying, during the draft lottery, I'm going to try to bury my head in the sand during that moment. But other than that, I'm looking forward to a fun night in the NBA. Make sure you do subscribe right here to the NBA front office YouTube channel. Don't forget to follow us over on Apple podcasts, leave us that 5 star rating and review as well. Until next time, everybody. See ya and stay safe..

"mavs" Discussed on The Lowe Post

"I am interested to see if Luca, if the next card that Dallas plays and sort of expanding their playbook is Luca trying to hunt those guys a little bit more and if the jazz do the same thing where, okay, we're gonna hedge out and W and force Dorian Finney Smith and Reggie Bullock and the guys screening for you to be playmakers and beat us that way, but Lucas smart about, okay, come up and screen for me again, Jordan Clarkson, let's see if you can do it twice. Three times. You can't. I'm gonna get by you and if you switch, I'm going into bully mode. So I just is interesting. And it's like, you know, Quinn said last night before the game, you've got to mix it up. You can't just show Luca the same looks over and over and over again because you're making it easy on it. If Luke knows what's coming, he's solving that puzzle every single time. You know, he will shred up the same look. So you've got to mix it up. And none of the options are really that great because he can pretty much figure out a way to beat any certain look. He is a blueprint, all of his own and I'm not sure where this series is going to go because it has been an interesting X's and O's chess match and it does still feel like in game 6, there's a lot of cards left to play. The teams are still trying different things, both schematically in terms of their lineups. And I'm interested to see how you talk comes out. Your pessimistic about them winning game 6. I understand why they just got rolled. They're now, you know, this is a solid Mavs series out there. I think the maps are plus 32 or 35 for the series. A lot of that was last night. You know, go out and win a home game, force Dallas, but Luca. Well, and Donovan's gonna be either out or limited, you know, I don't know that Donovan Mitchell deal with the hamstring tightness is going to be very effective on the defensive end of the floor. To put it politely, you know, I don't know if Donovan Mitchell with healthy hamstrings is ever going to be very effective on the defensive end of the floor. I think we actually game four, I thought he was pretty good. At first three games, I thought he was a traffic cone. Yeah, they also worked harder in game four. Part of part of the adjustment in game four was we're just not going to get burned so easily. Yeah, Donovan's 8 of 41 from three in this series. I mean, they're just not shooting well enough. They're not getting as many open threes. That's been the story of the series. Dallas is pick and roll defense is really good. They're not getting open kick threes. They've got to just make more of the and they're not digging out transition. That's quince thing is, hey, a lot of the reason we get up so many threes during the regular season is because we get out and push tempo some and get those trees. The Mavericks are Jason Kidd said it after game two. He says, we're playing their game and we feel like we have the advantage. And he's talking about that math game. The Mavericks are getting up significantly more threes and so listen, if one team is shooting, I don't know what the exact numbers are for the course of the series, but the Mavericks got to be getting up double figure more threes. The Mavericks have taken 67 more threes through 5 games. There you go. I mean, that is. And especially games two and three after game three, you know, our ESPN stats and info folks have the stat. And I don't have it right in front of me, but without telling you the exact numbers, the Mavericks had taken more uncontested threes through three games than the jazz had total threes. Typically, that's a stat that's going to lead to one team having the advantage. You mentioned house, in the last time we podcast about the series last week, they had, I think, kind of by accident slash desperation played a little bit of point Donovan, which we don't see much, which is like, you know, Mitchell without either Clarkson or Connelly. So Mitchell, house or Neil bogdanovic Gobert, that sounds interesting given their defensive needs in this series and how calmly has struggled. I just don't see enough playmaking there, even with Bogdanovich having mismatches he can post up, which has been okay for them, not that really productive since game one. Like Donovan's a 5 assist guy, he's not a tennis guy. Especially when he's struggling against Finney Smith and thanks miss all over him and he's not comfortable. But it's one of those things. Again, Quinn does not have good answers right now. It's not like he's making poor decisions. He has poor choices. You know, it's like, you know, when do you want to drink the vodka or the or the bourbon? You've got to go to work. Those are your two options. Neither were real good. I don't see them winning game 6 with just high pick and roll, even if you fancy it up with the flare screen there, back screen there. I like whether. You know what I like is when they have Mitchell kind of do the Iverson cut across the foul line, catch the ball on the move and go. I like they just need more stuff like that, but it's hard to do in the playoffs against against good defenses. I'm expecting a nip and tuck game. I'm expecting the jazz to come out with the fight they showed in game four. And I want it as a neutral fan. I don't want a game 7. I want a game 7. Yeah, hey, I at least want to see competitive basketball. You know, and for the jazz, I don't think it's overstating to say, this chapter in your franchise's history is potentially at stake here, come out and fight like it. Again, the one thing we don't know right now is how much if any Donovan Mitchell is going to be able to be a part of that fight or lack thereof. I think Dallas is what a game. She asked me to predict who's going to win. Mitchell, no Mitchell limited Mitchell full health Mitchell. Nerf gun to my head, I'm picking them as to when game 6..

"Exclusively on the Apple TV plus. While Tim, now that we're getting close to the end of the regular season and things seem to be going pretty well for the Mavs overall, how do you think fans are feeling about having Jason Kidd at the helm? You know, when we talk about the twofold reasons that fans were hesitant about his hiring. Obviously, his background no on court results will change how fans feel about the hiring in that sense. But I think in terms of encore results, Jason Kidd has been exactly what the team is needed. I do think the way that he was not Rick Carlisle, and he was not as hard nosed. He was not as forceful in the way that he coached and aggressive in the way that he communicated with players. I think that was needed. And I think that has been probably the most important factor this season just to change in coaching dynamics. And I also think that the defensive improvements were not expected. This really was a very similar group to the teams and the roster they had the past two seasons. So I think that has been a clear positive in something he's brought to the team. And then on offense, you know, there's not too much he really needed to do. Luka Dončić plays Luka Dončić offense. And the key is just setting up the team around him so that Luka Dončić can succeed. He's always going to kind of play one way. And we'll see in the postseason how Jason Kidd does. The NBA is a process for versus results industry and the results are always going to win out. And I think the results have more than justified the Jason kid hiring, even if the process was at the time and still legitimately can be questioned for the way the Mavericks handled it. After that slow start, Luka Dončić has been playing like one of the top 5 players in the league for months. But as we all know, the real test for superstars comes in the playoffs. Now, Dončić has already proven himself to be an incredible postseason performer, but he's still yet to get out of the first round as you had mentioned earlier. So how important is it for him individually to lead this team on a bit of a playoff run? I try to remind myself that Twitter is not representational of society as a whole and in sports as a whole. Something that needs to be put in your brain every day. Yeah, I need it like written on my mirror. And maybe I'm just on there too much. But I do think it would be very unfair to Dončić, who has been brilliant in two first round series. If the Mavericks, for whatever reason, do not get out of the first round, that that would hang over him. And it shouldn't. It absolutely should not. He played as well as any player can play in the two series that he played against the clippers, the past two seasons. But something about not getting out of the first round, it would just provide that extra bit of fodder of, oh, well, he hasn't done it yet. You know, he hasn't had a deep posters in running. He hasn't made it out of the first round. And so I do think it's really important that the Mavericks win their first round series. I do think it's important that they make a convincing run, whether it ends in the second round or whether it ends in the Conference Finals or rather somehow they get to the finals themselves. But just having that convincing body of work in the postseason and having it not hang over Luka Dončić anymore, that he hasn't made it out of the first round, even though he's done everything he can to get the team out of the first round, the past two times has been there. I think that's important for this team. And quite frankly, at this point, I'm expecting it to happen. Finally, Tim, a lot of people are pointing to Dallas as one potential dark horse to come out of the Western Conference and make it to the NBA Finals. And the field does look pretty open right now in the west. You watch the Mavs play day in and day out. What do you think are realistic expectations for this team can play off time? I don't know how much they're contenders. I still think that they're certainly a step behind Phoenix in the Western Conference and that I don't even think it's guaranteed that they're massive for strong favorites. But at this point, I'm betting that they win their first round series. And I think of the Mavericks secure the number three seed, which is looking more and more likely. That it sets them up with a fascinating second round series against Memphis. But just broadly, an is sort of where Dallas was, a season ago. And Memphis might be the team that just hasn't quite learned how to win yet. Dallas might just be far enough ahead in terms of just having the veteran presence and know how of having these two series that they've played against the clippers in the past few years, that they'll end up with just a little bit of an edge. And I think that we have to get there before I make any predictions. But I think it's a series that can win. And then all of a sudden, like I said, they're in the Conference Finals. So I think getting the number three seat, like it looks like they should be able to. That's going to set them up for a really interesting series of opponents. And if they get all the way to the Conference Finals, again, that's one series away from playing for a championship. And so it's really hard to discount them when I do see a path that could work and could play out in their favor. Well, thank you so much Tim for breaking this down. We'll be excited to see where they end up. Absolutely. I'm excited to watch it. You can read all of Tim kato's Dallas Mavericks coverage and listen to his podcast. 77 minutes. "It was really impressive to watch. The MVP and Dallas had swarmed around him. They steal it. I think what was so startling about it is, even though the Mavericks made a couple moves, they had a couple players who were more defensive minded in the rotation. It was largely the same group that we had seen last season, and really even the season before. And these same players with a different coaching staff and a different principles were all of a sudden looking completely different and playing with so much more effectiveness on the difference of N and that's what really bullied the team as they built into this winning stretch of basketball. While that synergy kind of got shaken up because at the end of that run, they decided to ship former all star Chris eps persing us to Washington for Spencer Dinwiddie and javis berton's. Why did the Mavs decided it was the right time to move on from him? I think the Mavericks had come to the conclusion that Christopher was not the future of this team that he was not the future costar for Luka Dončić. And kind of like a breakup and in a relationship you're in. Once you know that it's ending, there's really no point in keeping it going. And I certainly did not expect just because of pursing this contract and his perceived trade value around the league, that they would be able to trade him at this deadline. But the Mavericks once they decided this started actively looking. And they were talking to Toronto about a deal, and that fell through Toronto in a different direction. And then the Washington, they started talking there in something came together. And once they decided, yeah, this is something that will set us up with more flexibility. And it will end in era that we know is not the era of the future for the team. They decided to pull the trigger. And really, in some ways, the players they got back have been even more effective than maybe they anticipated. But the genesis of the train and the main reason for the trade was really a decision that Christopher talented as he is and really he had had a good season when he was on the court. But he wasn't the future. And they knew that and since they knew that it was time to move on. Well, let's look at who the Mavs got in return. How have Dinwiddie and Breton's looked since joining the team? Are they bringing anything to the team that you think they've really lacked in recent seasons? Didn't what he especially has? I've talked about and in many people around the Mavericks have talked about the team needing another shot creator that Luka Dončić does everything, everything revolves around him and orbits around him. And look, that's pretty effective. He's that good. But when he's the only one who can have the ball in his hands and be trusted to create a shot for himself or create one for another teammate. That just bogs down the offense. And so for Spencer Dinwiddie to come in and for Spencer Dinwiddie also to have his own specific way of creating shots, he's a more decisive player, whereas Luca will take time and he'll break someone down or cross them over back and forth. And eventually he'll get into the lane and you can't stop him. But it might take some setting up. Spencer is much more dynamic in instant in the way that he attacks. Made with two 36 left. Absolutely love. And his confidence as a player. You know, he will either shoot without hesitation or the balls on the floor. And he decided to the rim. In the Mavericks really needed a player like that. It's then when he going downhill all the way to the back end of the Mavericks have climbed the mountain. Brilliant about that particular drive. He knew supporters wouldn't be able to do anything with those four fouls. And he went right at it in the habits has been more of a bench player. I think that was always expected to be the case. But I do think that he has value in that he may play a very important role in the postseason because we know that shooting is just about the most important quality in the MBA at this point. And being able to play as a small ball center, someone who you can't leave. I think there's real value in that and it's probably not going to be more than 15 or 20 minutes. But it's a useful player to have off the bench and he's fit that role effectively. So overall, Tim, how has the team fared since that trade? Are they looking like a group that's peaking at the right time as we head into the postseason? It's interesting because the Mavericks have won a lot of games. And the beat good teams, but they've mostly won games by small margins, and when they lose, and sometimes when they lose two teams, they're very clearly better than they're losing by big margins. So you can look at the whole and say, well, their numbers aren't that effective. And they're not as impressive as they were beforehand. The defense has taken a couple of steps back. But you can also look at the team's highs and the way the team has played the best opponents that they faced. Milwaukee is a good example. And the way that they're able to write so that challenge and the way that they're able to really neutralize things that the best teams are trying to do and on the flip side, not being neutralized by what the best teams are trying to do to them. I think that's really effective. And I think it does speak well to the fact that this team is dangerous in the postseason. And I think that will speak well of their future and set them up because Lucca, he's still 23. He's still getting better. There's still ways to improve this team. The Mavericks are going to be one of the best teams in the coming seasons. And there's no question about that. And just proving that with a deeper playoff run this season, I think that's the most important thing for them. Okay, coming up. What a deep playoff run would mean for Luka Dončić. "Andrew Miller, Trevor, do you think the Lakers can run the table, lose the last 7 games and help the capella can secure a better pick? I don't think they want to do that. I don't think they want to do that. I don't think they want to want to help the pelicans at all, just like the pelicans didn't want to help the Lakers. Dame blaze, if the Lakers got rid of rob palinka, who do you think would be a good replacement? I volunteer his tribute. No, but seriously, I think that there would be if it's me trying to find somebody for the Lakers. I'd be looking for an outside voice. I've been saying this for a while. I wouldn't necessarily look just at the Lakers family tree, which is what they tend to do. They tend to look at their family tree. People who are already know the organization who have already had a role in the organization and that's who they bring in. I don't think they're going to get rid of rob blanket. I think if they do anything, it will be bringing in another voice to take over that kind of Magic Johnson role, the role that magic had previously before he left. Maybe you do that. But again, I'm looking at an outside voice, and I want somebody who is very salary cap focused. I want somebody who is very understanding of the cumulative effect of the minor moves run government and I talked about this on the previous podcast. The minor moves that the Lakers made mistakes on. Taylor Horton Tucker's contract, Austin Reeves contract, things of that nature, these little things weren't financially, they could have tweaked things a little bit more and put them in a much better position. Those are the kinds of people that I would try to bring in. Somebody who's really going to see that and understand how that one move might not matter that much, but when you've got 5 of those moves adding up, then it does become a bigger issue. So that's what I'm looking for. Somebody who really understands that who understands the value of in trade situations, I feel like the Lakers have been that team for a while, particularly under rob pelinka, who will, they get in trade negotiations, they never really seem to win the trade. Do they? They always seem to get the deal done, but it's almost like they're that guy in your fantasy league that will toss in an extra pick or whatever just to make sure they get the player. And sometimes like when you're contending for a championship, that's okay. That's okay, but you also have to be at some point conscious of the value that you're getting. And I think there's been times where the Lakers haven't appropriately valued the assets they do have, whether it's the young players, picks, things of that nature. So I would like to see that change a little bit as well..

"Ouch, ouch. The Lakers followed the Dallas Mavericks by a lot. In fact, they were never really in this game to break down the final score. The Lakers lose one 27 to one O 5. It was 43 to 25. After the first quarter, 43 at 25 out of the first quarter. In fact, the Lakers lost every quarter of this game with the exception of the fourth quarter, the fourth quarter they came back Dallas Mavericks, they only scored 15 points. In the fourth quarter and the Lakers still lost. Oh, final score actually just updated one 20 to one ten. I can't notice I started setting up as the game was ending. Man, that was brutal. Now we expected this to be rough. We talked about this before the game with Mark gunnell's. The Mavs were the -12 ish depending on what line you were looking at, favorite heading into the night. And we certainly saw why. The Dallas Mavericks have been playing very good basketball. They've got something to play for. The Lakers know LeBron no Anthony Davis didn't look like they were playing for much out there not to say that they weren't putting in effort and weren't trying, but there's a difference. There's a difference in urgency between a team in this situation, the Mavs are in where they're playing to improve their seating and all that compared to a Lakers team that it feels like there's kind of an understanding of what's going on here and what's going to happen ultimately, even if they do wind up making the play and tournament. By the way, the Lakers now officially dropping to 11th and not in the play and tournament, which means now they must win one more game than the San Antonio spurs, the rest of the way through. The season, the spurs have, well, they've got a difficult schedule. They have a couple of games against the blazers, but then they have some really tough ones as well..

And I think you have to give kid credit for recognizing what went wrong in the previous head coach's tenure and trying to address some of those things from a cultural and psychological standpoint. Now, a Luka Dončić team should not be mediocre offensively, right? And again, this is Luca not being himself for the first however many I'll say a couple months the season being heard a lot of that time. We wouldn't hurt. He wasn't in shape. Lucas back to being that dude. And there's still just okay offensively. And a lot of that is several guys on the team, just like, I mean, porzingis is June 28% from three. It's not that he's getting worse shots. He's just not making shots. You know, pretty much almost down the roster guys aren't shooting near their career percentages, Hardaway before he was hurt, was way, way down. But they need so getting to the trade deadline, they recognize, hey, this team needs some more juice offensively, especially with Hardaway out at least a few months. They hope he can come back towards the end of the season, but you don't know what he's going to look, what he's going to look like when it comes back. They would love to be able to figure out how can they get a little somebody who can create somebody who can shoot another wing score. Now, Zach, I'm sure you've heard all the same things I've heard about really about Brunson in particular. About, hey, the Mavs are the match shopping Brunson. Do they want to avoid a payment or lose in situation this summer? All those sorts of things. I have been assured that they will not move Brunson before the trade deadline unless it is anti quote a what the bleep are they thinking type of offer. They recognize moving Brunson, first of all, it would be difficult to get back anything of significance because he makes so little money, right? By MBA standards. So you're going to have to combine him with other salaries, whatever. And they just don't have a lot of pieces in that regard to come up with something that makes sense. But on a team where one of the big concerns is man, Luca has to create so much is he going to wear down the fourth quarters last year, even in the playoffs where he was spectacular. It's hard to envision how trading the one other guy who's good at dribbling a basketball. On that roster would make any sense for a team that's trying to do some damage during the season. And in a west that still with all due respect to the suns, feels pretty wide open. Well, juice is the right word because even now I watched the meds and they're playing well and Lucas a genius. I mean, the guy is an absolute killer. I've said before. I mean, the Mavs were my pick at the beginning of the year for sort of like, if everything goes right, this is like my sort of off the radar, like they could actually sneak into that. I said on TV, there's a team in here somewhere that could be a threat to the finals. But they just juices the right word because they never get to the basket. They don't get to the line very much. They are the worst, the worst in terms of volume and efficiency, the worst transition team in the league. There is just not among good teams, there is no team in more need of like 8 easy points a game at the basket. And just the easiest way to get them is by this concept of we don't have to walk the ball up the floor. You're allowed to get a rebound and try to run like try to dribble as fast as you can to the other end of the floor. And they have another guy on the floor who can dribble. Like I would even like to see them get another guy. Three guys on the floor at once. You can dribble because you are allowed when you get a steel to keep going. The other direction as fast as you can, let's talk about the stuff you've heard about Brunson because. I've heard I've heard competing Intel on Brunson's how scared they are that Brunson is going to leave in free agency. Let's put it that way. There are some people who there are some teams who are telling me, well, the Mavs are projecting confidence that Brunson is going to stay. They have the means to resign Brunson. There's not a lot of cap space teams out there, is he really going to go to the pistons or the spurs who are his rumored destination? Don't have cap space. The Celtics who need a point guard don't have cap space. We're not worried about it. Then I hear loyalty, you know? He's kind of a real flight risk. So I don't know what to believe there. But I want to zoom out and take it even further. If they pay Brunson.

"Because you know, you're just more at risk for turnovers when you're the guy that's throwing all these passes all over the place. Anthony Davis 6 turnovers to despite not being necessarily a facilitator that's typically not his role. That's a lot of turnovers for a guy who's not in a facilitator role. And a lot of these were just him not making the right REITs. So I'm gonna master lock Anthony Davis turnovers, but specifically how he's reading the double teams. I think he's got to get better there where even if maybe he didn't get a chance to practice coming off of the knee and that was a factor in terms of the energy or something like that. He's still got to be better reading these double teams. That's why the Mavs sent them. Other teams are going to send them to and he's just got to get better there. He's got to be quicker to pass that out because the Lakers have shooters. You've got guys that are going to knock down these shots. You've got Ellington. You've got Reeves. You've got players who can hit the open threes. It's on Anthony Davis to make the read, hit the open man and the Lakers to move the ball quickly to punish whatever team is doubling AD. And guess what? Then there's double teams are going to go away. But until you start doing that, you're going to keep getting doubled. So AD, master locking, the read of the double team and the turnovers that it was creating. All right. My email from YouTube said, hi, Trump. I know this was a great win, but I keep thinking how behind the top teams we are, should we be worried? Yeah, the Lakers are not on the same level as the sun's right now, the warriors, some of the top teams in the NBA. They do have this thing, though, too, where they played the level of their competition. They're known for this over the years. We've seen this team do it. So I am curious what that's going to look like when they do match up with some of the better teams, but yeah, right now they're not on that level. The hope is that they'll get there by the end of the season. Because it is going to take some time for them to gel, but they're just not quite.

"So bob, I wanted to ask you about this particular item in the athletic story related to the 2020 draft in particular because according to the piece, your vision did not align with others in Mavs management. It was, quote, a particularly egregious example of your power. And the evening was, quote, embarrassing. And the reporting says you did not consult scouts on the team's first two draft picks, which all paints a particularly telling picture of you and how you're perceived. So tell me how you experience the 2020 draft and how all that went down. How it went down, a couple Zoom meetings, everyone kind of submits who they like, everyone talks about who they like. You make notes of who they like. And so the way the draft went down. First of all, none of these guys are in the room. By that, he means that those maverick scouts were not actually physically in the room that day. They are on Zoom on a monitor 35 feet away from everyone else. The way the day went, there was a night it was a day it started very early as they would start doing mock drafts. And they didn't stop until the sun went down basically. I don't understand that. What does that mean? Donnie be like, hey guys, let's do another mock draft. You be this team. Let's switch up the order of who gets to pick for who. So we're like, I'm the Lion of hawks and I choose. And then they would do that. They would do that over and over and over and over again. And I was like, this can't be real life in some ways. What is the purpose of this? Then there was a lot of talking with people who I respected. There was guiding the appendix there. Brilliant, hardworking, basketball guy, respected his opinion a lot. The focus of the draft for me was to trade up to get tyrese Halliburton. That was the folks in the trap. I'm not operating.

"These players that are going to improve, Luca might get better for the Mavs, but who else is? And I don't really have that player. I can point you. So I'm gonna say between M different and bad. I felt like they needed to do something, they're gonna be still good this season, I guess, I guess I'll lean more towards indifferent, right? I can't say it's good, but it's not terrible either. Yeah, and that's basically where I'm at too, because I don't think it was bad 'cause they didn't sign any really awful contracts or do something really dumb. They didn't go all in and trade for a guy who's only going to be there for a year or whatever. It just felt like this off season might have been bigger. I guess, and I guess we spent a year looking at Dallas, and I have $35 million in cap space and they're going to be players for all these guys. And clearly they were setting up to make a run at Giannis and then Giannis came off the board with his extension and then I think they read it right and said, we're not going to evolve in that Kyle Lowry. Stuff, because it's going to cost us a whole bunch of guys and then we're going to have Kyle Lowry Luke and not much else. There. But yeah, I guess I'm in the same spot where I'm more like, let's see. Where that goes. So you kind of alluded to it a couple of minutes ago. What's your biggest question for this team? How do they get better? How does this team get better? Look at their cap situation. It's not like they're going to have money to spend for the next couple of years. And I'm looking at this roster. I don't see a bunch of trade assets here. Now, porzingis suddenly turns it around and is killing it. Maybe by the trade deadline, that's changed, and they've got something in him that they can ship out. Maybe there's some other pieces, you know, maybe a team finds themselves in need of a bid and big and they can move Dwight Powell's got a very movable deal. Maxie clea, but does as well. But do you really want to move those guys and then rely on say Willie Kelly Stein to eat up those minutes in the middle? I just don't see an obvious path for them. Now you mentioned that trade exception they've got, that might be their best shot at really getting better. And even then it's not a huge I mean, it's a big trade exception, but it's not like you're gonna go you're not gonna absorb a $20 million deal or anything like that. No, so that's my big question here is how do they get better? How do they avoid getting stuck to the point where two seasons from now, Lucas frustrated and then the pressure is really on? Yeah, so I'm gonna steal something kind of that you said before. Who becomes that second guy and can it be Kris poisoning us? Can porzingis break through and be an all star level player this year..

"Got the non taxpayer mid level exception from Dallas and then they added Jaguar McLaughlin and Eugene oma Rui to their two way contracts, players lost. This one was even out even in. They lost Tyler bait and they'd Hinton, where they're two way players. They're both off to other teams. Nicolo mellie returned back home to Italy to play JJ Redick as we've talked about on the show is still a free agent. And he is sounding like he's going to stay will not be with Dallas. We know that. Nor will it be with New Orleans. He won't be with anybody. Yeah, won't be with anybody for a while. And then we'll see what JJ Reddick wants to do. And then Josh Richardson as we said was traded to the Celtics. And then they resigned Tim Hardaway junior got a four year contract. Out of the Mavs after he played really, really well in Dallas that's kind of almost become the Tim Hardaway junior trade. Instead of the Chris stop sports industry. And then bob on my yarno vich resigned as well. So the big man they've got a lot of bigs on this team, bob on porzingis, Powell, cleaver, Willie Kelly Stein, so a lot of big guys there in Dallas. And then they're big stuff that happened was in their front office and coaching staff. Niko Harrison comes in or places a die Nelson as the general manager. There, and then Jason Kidd formally from your team as an assistant comes in getting another shot at a head coaching job comes in as the head coach. Also brought another one of your former duds. He was my buddy first 'cause he was at BC. But yeah, mutual friend. Yeah, there we go. Mutual friend. And then Luka Dončić signed his his extension. Now, his is a little different than Trey young's because he is already met the qualifiers for the 30% max. So he will 100% be at whatever 30% of the salary cap is starting next year right now that projects to be 5 years, $207 million from Luca on that extension. So there we are with Dallas. I think the guys they brought in are better than the guys they lost, especially for what this team needs. And I think they got Hardaway, resigned to a nice contract. They could have gone the cap space route and got involved in a whole bunch of guys, but it looks like they read the market right on that and said, no, let's try to retain some guy. So not a lot of changes, but I think the ones they've made are good ones. I agree. I think they are good ones. And I think, you know, obviously being today being hawks and mad stay, I think this is the rare trade where looking back, both teams would do this trade again. I think the hawks are happy with the way things are turned out and I think the mountains are happy with the way things turn out. Obviously, Luca, getting that big contract extension, it's pretty pleased with that. But you're right, look, the Mavs they didn't do a ton this off season. I think we can argue. Is this team actually better? This season or not, I think the addition of Reggie Bullock, I mean, look at any time that you can add shooting around a star player like Luca..

"I noticed that the first quarter second quarter third quarter obviously they. They ended the quarters really well. It may be. That's that was the story of what that run that they were talking about in the third quarter where they had the mindset of like okay going into finishing these quarters we need to just finish them really well and so that was their mindset and things just happen to bust in the third quarter it was just i think i think the clippers and the mavs after that in the fourth quarter they were both especially the started the fourth. They were both a little shell shocked. I was shells. Yeah i was like wait the mavericks thereby and it was just like how did this happen. Yes exactly it was really really weird but awesome. Yeah and then you know. The clippers slowly kept climbing bag. That's how it goes. Yeah you know. And then the mavericks hit shots when they needed him and needed to. And that's how it goes and and they executed at the end of the game and won the game so man. I don't know what to think i. I was not feeling confident. Going into this game after the last losses. Well i thought that. After i thought that whoever won game four was going to win the series. Now it's and yeah. I mean after you win a game you feel like you can never lose a game that you can never win but being up three to definitely works in their favor and they finish this game. I mean it would. This was a tough game. Aside from the run where they got that sixteen point lead. It was a close game. It wasn't all of the hype and hysteria from games. One and two. It was just a really serious focused game and like you said they hit the shots when they need. It was a grind house playoff. Run type of game. This is the kind of game that you get deep in the playoffs and the finals were both teams are equally match and they're just hidden throwing haymakers each and that's what we got tonight and thankfully the mavericks came out on top porzingas. Hit a big shy. Yes he did yes he did. He finished the game. This probably is. He finished with eight points. How many shots. He had field goal attempts six. Okay so not a lot of shots now. look i. don't wanna get into porzingas. I really don't because the mavericks won and that's all that matters matters. And he hit a big shot. And that's what matters. Yeah i like up. Until that point. I was like. He's he was a nonfactor 'cause here but this was during the time whenever the clippers were making their ron and they had got it to like four points. One point i mean in the mavs just could not make shots. It was sorry the playwright. Before that tim hardaway junior hit a big three and then on that play chris. Stops and luke it. I mean it was not an open shy luca just pass it to me was in the corner. It was a well. Contested shot i thought. It even could've been a foul and he just wished it and that was huge because they were trying to maintain that we have the same opportunity in game three yet and he missed it. Yeah and this one. He hit so of course. He didn't have any emotion like again. I don't want to get into porzingis..

"That let's do the Master Lock in the nation that takes us into our big topic here. Let's go. Thursday, all right, Chris the Masterpiece Masters who is getting put in the Master Lock to night. You know, so we set in our watch along there's some nights where there's like a definitive Master log, you know, there's just there's a master lock that just thought was right, you know, like it's not something you have to think about. You don't have to debate between this guy or that guy. There's just one answer that just feels right you go with it, you know, that's that's the one and I'm going to have to go with it. I'm saying it now and I I feel like a majority of the chat is going to go along with this. I say the referees the officiating gets the message. Yes, all all three of them. I think there's three of them out there on the court. I think there's three masked Mazda shot. It goes to the officials bottom line. There was just too many fouls a lot of kind of ticky-tacky houses. That was a lot of thousands of went against the Lakers. I think you said, I mean the mountains shot about ten more free throws than the Lakers I think are are they went to the line ten more times? That is 20 jul. That was just, oh, twenty more times goodness. 36 to 1636 to 17 was the free-throw attempts. Yeah, and so like a number of things, obviously we're biased cuz we don't want, you know, other team gave them any free throws but it just it killed the flow of the game and some of these files just did not need to be installed it almost, you know, we were making jokes about how the referees were were wearing blue tonight cuz they were Dallas. They were basically Mavericks, they were Mavericks Nation. They're probably on the Mavericks name posted now too, so they they got ran up on the Mavs post game show. "Wolves or some of these even even the the middling teams five hundred teams. It's one thing to do it against them and another thing to do it against the utah jazz. And i think a lot of people were billing this as like a kind of measuring stick sort of gained like we'll see is this is this for is their defense for real. Is their offense for real. And tonight like yeah. The jazz missed a ton of shots bouyed. How much was them. How much was the mavs. Amazing defense like you said usually nation of yeah and this is a a theme for the mavericks over. The last couple of months is their defense. Yes this game went how the other games have gone for them. Where sometimes it's a defensive slugfest. Which is what the opposing team does not want. The mavericks are getting really comfortable in those kind of games. It's a slow game. It's a very low pace slow paced type of game and it's a defensive grind house and it's weird to say that about this team the way they were ranked defensively earlier in the season with all the covid issues that they had but their defense is. I'm starting to believe it is for real because this game went just like those other games. It was the same theme where the opposing team just couldn't score on the maverick scrambling defense. And yes part of being a really good defensive team as you have to have some things bounce your way but you kind of make those things bounce your way again teams shoot lower percentages on threes when they feel your presence so even if they're getting the shots that they liked to get if they just feel you there they know you're there it it causes him to miss a little bit more than they would like to and i thought that's what the mavericks did tonight at the jazz had one nine in a row. I still think they're a better team than dallas. Don't get me wrong overseas one game. They've done this for a yes. I can't i. I don't know if i'm ready to say the mavericks would beat the jazz in seven game series. Now no but one thing. That helps is the mavericks. Have the best player on the court true. And it's not even close the the distance between donovan. Mitchell and luka doncic isn't even close yeah and that may give the mavericks and that's why the mavericks may have a chance in any playoff series. I'm not saying they're going to win. But because they'll have the best player on the court most of the time they have a legit shot at winning a lot of just like. We saw against the clippers last year. No one expected them to win two games against him because they had the best player they were. It was fun. It you know that they'll at least make the serious fund they're not gonna get swept or blown out or anything Yeah i mean donovan. Mitchell was six for twenty three tonight. "Been there done. That's cute yup. Yeah okay so there was just playing off of this game and how exciting it was. There was something that i think. This is what you were going to bring up earlier. If you can read my mind of what. I'm about to bring up so the other day i was it was after another big mavs win. I can't remember what no no is the washington game. We didn't get a chance to watch it but we were listening to it on the radio and after listening to the post game and i kinda got the sense that this was starting to become an exciting run for the mavericks that like in the past fifteen games. I don't think this includes tonight. But in the past fifteen games. They're eighth in defensive rating and third in offensive rating. They've won five in a row now. They just beat the jazz. I feel like i should be really excited about this team. And and i am excited about this win like obviously we discussed all over it. But there's a part of me that still really cynical about the mavericks in the current state of the mavericks and their future and how they're going to improve this team this summer. And i was thinking like man i miss being a genuinely excited about the maps and i don't know if it was like a blind faith of like was i really thinking like oh we're the seven seed man. We can take down anybody or was it just that i didn't care and i was like oh also we. We're winning and this. We're in the playoffs and what's going to happen. I don't know what it was. I can't remember now just having that genuine excitement whereas now i'm so cynical because i'm thinking about the past ten years and the failures of team building and what's going to happen this summer. Probably nothing. It's going to be frustrating. And i don't know i just wanted to talk about that because i do miss it but i think that my cynicism came reasons like there are legitimate reasons that have caused me to be skeptical about all of this and nothing. We have to get in this podcast. We've made it very clear. I mean you guys know how you feel about about their decisions. So it's like. I have my reasons for feeling skeptical. I don't know i don't have a resolution there that's just where i'm at. I think to me it's a couple of different factors one. The way the season started Was terrible and we had such high expectations before the season started of what this team was going to be Everybody was talking about top four seat or whatever ridiculous things go and they went nine and fourteen and so it didn't go very well the first twenty five games..
