"The public will be able to buy stock in Gucci for the first time. An executive points up. Look, the Soleil follows his finger to see the Italian flag flying proudly next to the American one from the New York Stock Exchange facade. The butterflies into Soleil's stomach flutter in time with a flapping of the flag. It's been a chaotic run up to today. First, the securities exchange commission required a last minute rewrite of Gucci's prospectus. Then, the Milan stock exchange looked at some recent losses by Gucci and refused to list the company on their exchange. Since the company is headquartered in Europe, they needed a European stock exchange to list it. At the last second, the Netherlands agreed. And then a month ago, Maurizio Gucci was murdered outside his office building in Milan. It was a hit arranged by his ex-wife, but de Soleil is worried that the public still associates Maurizio with Gucci, and will be scared off from buying shares. They enter the famous building and walk through the trading floor. Brokers are seated at their desks, headsets on jackets off, ready to start trading the second the bell rings, a Gucci banner hangs from the ceiling, and a digital sign at the front of the room reads hot stock to watch Gucci. Sweat breaks out on de Soleil's brow. He looks at the executive next to him. Maybe we set the initial price too high. The initial stock price is $22 per share. It's at the high end of what bankers suggested and de Soleil is having second thoughts. The executive shrugs and checks his watch. I think we're about to find out. The bell rings out, signaling the start of trading. All hell breaks loose. Phones ring off the hook, traders yell over each other. Runners sprint around the office. The Soleil looks from left to right, trying to get a sense of how Gucci is doing. But it's impossible to tell in the chaos. Suddenly, the executive grabs de Soleil by his lapels wrapping him in a hug. We did it. It's Soleil looks at the ticker. It shows Gucci trading at $26 per share. De Soleil lets out a whoop. The world is seeing Gucci the way he sees Gucci. In this moment, he feels like nothing can stop them. But in France, Bernard Arnault is going to try. It's 1996, Paris, France. Bernard Arnault is reading the newspaper over breakfast. He's reading reviews of Gucci's latest women's wear collection. And getting increasingly annoyed, can you believe this? They're calling Tom Ford the next Karl Lagerfeld. Karl Lagerfeld is the creative director of Chanel and one of the fashion industry's most revered designers. A little much if I do say so myself, his wife nods in sips or coffee. She's heard our nose rants about the attention Tom Ford and by extension Gucci receives before. I can't believe in Italian companies taking over the fashion world. Italians are craftsmen's artisans. They're not fashion designers. The French are fashion designers. If any of the accessory companies should be pivoting to fashion, it should be Louis Vuitton. He stopped short, staring

"Folding chair in Gucci's historic office building. A runway has been built down the middle of the room and the place is filled with reporters, spectators, and fashion industry emissaries. As de Soleil takes in the crowd and looks up at the frescoed ceiling. It's hard not to think about Gucci's history. Artisans used to hand so Gucci bags on the floor above. But today is about Gucci's future. In a few minutes, Tom Ford will debut his first solo menswear collection since being named Gucci creative director, less than a year earlier. De Soleil's wife, Eleanor sits next to him, fanning herself with a program. So what are we going to see here? De Soleil opens his mouth to answer, but then quickly shuts it again. You know, I have no idea. It's been a chaotic year since he took over as CEO of Gucci after Maurizio Gucci sold his shares. De Soleil has spent all his time just trying to keep the company afloat. After Maurizio's reckless moves, he hasn't been paying attention at all to what Tom Ford's been doing as creative director. Honestly, Ford only got the job because he was already in-house and was affordable. When the previous creative director Don mello left, there was talk of hiring a big name designer to fill the role. But they just didn't have the budget. To Soleil looks around at the full room. He hopes this collection is a success. And not a source of embarrassment. Eleanor smiles and shrugs. It'll be a surprise, then. As if on cue, the music transitions in the house lights go down, leaving only the runway illuminated. The first model struts onto the runway. The crowd gasps de Soleil's jaw drops. He can't believe what he's seeing. The model wears skin tight pink velvet pants paired with an equally tight pink mohair sweater. And instead of the classic Gucci leather loafer, he's wearing metallic moccasins that flash under the lights. This is not the men's wear collection to Soleil was expecting. It's edgier and sexier than anything he envisioned. The Soleil warily looks around the crowd, bracing himself for a furious and befuddled reaction. But instead, they look wrapped. All around him, photographers snap photos. The reporter next to him scribbles furiously in her notebook. This is the best collection I've seen in years. They're Soleil races as eyebrows and surprise. But he'll take it. Gucci needs a win. He leans back in his seat, enjoying the rest of the show. Clapping with a crowd is more and more models come out in Ford's skin tight, brightly colored velvet suits. As soon as the show ends, Ford walks onto the runway, a proud smile on his face. He gives a small bow. The crowd jumps to its feet, de Soleil joins them. Bravo. Bravo. He may not understand the clothes. But he knows a star making performance when he sees one. He understands that Ford is now the key to Gucci's success. And together, they can make Gucci, the number one luxury fashion and accessory brand in the world. If their two big personalities don't clash,

"Rocky may would be furious. I'd be stabbing him in the back siding with his nemesis after he brought me in. Sure, but if you align with Guinness and mo at Hennessy, there won't be anything he can do about it. Arno stares at the banker, working through the pros and cons in his head. Then he nods. Kal chevalier will see if we can work out a deal. Over the next week, arno strikes a deal with chevalier and the moet Hennessy families. He forms a holding company with Guinness and together, they purchased 25% of the shares. But rock amay gets word of our nose betrayal. He rallies the Louis Vuitton heirs to increase their shares, bringing their holdings up to 33%. It's not enough to control the board, but it's a large enough share that it's considered a blocking minority. Arno and Guinness will need the vuittons to move forward with any decisions. When rock amaze strides into the first LVMH board meeting since Arnold teamed up with Guinness and chevalier, rocka May's confident that he's outmaneuvered the trader Bernard Arnault. But arno has more tricks up his sleeve. It's 1988, Paris, France. Alan chevalier pounds a small gavel on the conference table at the LVMH headquarters. Bernard Arnault sits on one side, Henri raca may, on the other. Rock amaze stares daggers at our no, but our no pretends not to notice. I call this board meeting to order. First on the agenda, we have a vacant position on the supervisory board. Bernard Arnault leans forward. I nominate my father, Jean Leon Arnaud to the position. Chevalier nods. I second, shall we put it to a vote? Leans back in his chair crossing his arms. You're of course welcome to call a vote, but keep in mind that the Louis Vuitton family has recently increased its shares to 33%. I speak for the family when I say we oppose this nomination. And we'll use our voting power to block it. I nominate Jean viton to that position. One of the vital family members sitting next to him raises his hand. I second. Rock a may looks around the room. Finally landing on our no with his smirk. Rocky may can't help but feel a bit of pride. Arnold thought he could stab rock a man in the back, but the old man still got it. And shall we call a vote? Are no clears his throat. Pardon me, Henri, but you are operating with some outdated information. The arno Guinness company recently increased our shares as well. We now own 37.6% of LVMH stock. I do believe that means we control more than the vital family. Of course, we can still go ahead with a vote on Jean if you would like. He smiled serenely at rocka may, whose face has turned bright red. When did you do this? Over the past three days, rocka may quickly does the math in his head, calculating our know has just spent roughly $600 million on LVMH stock. Arno looks around the room. I move that we go forward on the vote, naming my father to the supervisory board. Any objections? No one objects and the vote moves forward. Rocky may stares straight ahead, fuming. There has to be a way to stop this. He brought arno in. He can find a way to push him out, too. Rock a May in our no launch into an all out war. Rock he proposes dividing up the company, but our no takes offense. He bought into this company fair and square. He's not getting it divided out from underneath him. As a response, he buys even more stock. He spends an additional $500 million, bringing his control up to 43.5%. Chevalier, who owns no stock personally, resigns. He sees nothing good coming from being caught in the crossfire between Arnaud and rock amme. With chevalier stepping down, arno becomes chairman of LVMH. One of his first moves is to suggest an amendment to the bylaws, requiring executives retire at age 70. Attempting to force the 76 year old rock ame out. Furious, rock a maid takes the fight to the courts. He asks the judge to nullify our nose last stock by arguing that it was insider trading. The court bans are no from holding any shareholder meetings until the matter is resolved, forcing LVMH into a state of limbo. Rock amay has earned a reprieve. But with the internal fighting becoming so public and the company unable to make any major decisions. LVMH is in a vulnerable state. It's December 1989, Milan, Italy. Mauricio Gucci sits in a courthouse. It's cold day, but he feels hot and constrained in his gray double breasted suit. He keeps his hands clasped, resting on the table in front of him. It takes all of his willpower not to fidget. This is the final hurdle to get through, and then he can run Gucci, his way. At last. Any second now the judge will walk in. He will either uphold the conviction that Mauricio forged his father's signature on stock shares to avoid paying inheritance tax. Or he will absolve him. It's hard not to feel like Maurizio's fate is in the judge's hands. If his conviction is upheld, not only will he have to pay a hefty fine, his name will forever be besmirched. Besides, he promised invest corp, the company he brought in to buy out his family that he would clear up all his legal troubles. Mauricio needs this judge to overturn the conviction. A buzzer blares through the courtroom announcing the judge's arrival. The judge takes his place behind a high bench, looking down at the courtroom below him. B seated. Mauricio sits down. His heart pounds sweat, forms on the back of his neck. His future Gucci's future is on the line. It only takes a few seconds for the judge to pull out a pair of reading glasses and get settled. But to Maurizio, it feels like it takes hours. The judge holds up a piece of paper and begins to read. In the name of the Italian people, the Court of Appeals of Milan overturns the sentence issued by the lower court and absolves Maurizio Gucci of all charges against him. Mauricio leaps to his feet and throws his arms around his lawyers. Tears stream down his face. He did it. His family threw everything they could at him. They forced him to spend two and a half years in exile. But he's won. Nothing can stop him now. He's going to make Gucci the best luxury brand in the world. And with Louis Vuitton stymied by its own infighting, Mauricio has a good shot. But whether he has the business skills is.

"It's 10 o'clock at night, February 1999, Paris, France. Tom Ford pulls back the curtain and peers out the window of his apartment. Snow falls against the dark sky. Ford squints his narrow brown eyes to get a better look. Ford is the creative director of Gucci, the storied luxury brand. He's considered one of the most exciting fashion designers working. His clothes are bold and sexy, almost dangerous. But recently, that danger has followed him into his real life. Below him, the street bustles with pedestrians and cars, but Ford is focused on one black vehicle parked across the street. He still there. For its partner, Richard Buckley joins him at the window and looks out. Are you sure? I don't see anyone inside the car. Ford points through the window. He's leaning back, but you can see the top of his head just above the window. How long has he been there, 8? 9 hours? Buckley follows Ford's finger and sees what he's referring to. I mean, it's weird that he's still there, but I think it's a leap to think he's staking us out. Do you really think Louis Vuitton would send someone to watch you? They hired a private investigation firm to investigate Gucci executives. I don't know why they wouldn't watch me too. This thing is ugly. A little over a month ago, the owner of Louis Vuitton moet Hennessy, the largest luxury brand in the world, started buying up Gucci stock in an attempt to take over the smaller Italian company. Gucci's CEO is doing everything in his power to prevent the takeover. Including engaging in some dirty legal tricks. It's turned into a nasty fight with low blows and mudslinging on both sides. Ford keeps his eyes trained on the man in the car below. I told you we have security team sweeping the offices to make sure LVMH hasn't planted microphones, right? Buckley nods. Ford turns and looks at him sharply. You haven't let anyone into the apartment recently, no workers or anyone? No. You're sure. Yes, I promise. Ford relaxes momentarily. I'm not paranoid. It wasn't even four years ago that Mauricio was gunned down on the street. This business is crazy. In 1995, Maurizio Gucci, the grandson of Gucci's founder and the former CEO of the company, was murdered in front of his office building in Milan. Buckley puts his hand on Ford's shoulder. I know, and that was shocking, but Mauricio was shot by his jealous ex-wife. Remember? The only reason Louis Vuitton wants Gucci is because of you. You brought that company back from the brink. They're not going to harm you. Ford nods. But still keeps watch. During the past 9 years, he's been a Gucci. He's learned that behind the glamour, the luxury goods market is cutthroat and tumultuous, with more backstabbing than fine stitching. And who knows how bad this rivalry? Could get. "It's intentional and transcendent. And I just, let's be real, if you don't want to see Lady Gaga and Adam Driver swanning around Italy in like clothes, then you and I are not alike. And perhaps this movie is not for you. But we are not the same. But this movie was for me. See, what'd you think? You're a longtime chronicler of the works of Ridley Scott. What do you make of passive Gucci? You know how some people say they go to action movies and they're just like, hey, I just want to, I just want to see the explosions. Yeah. Gucci's in action movie, but the explosions is acting. Yes. I just wanted to see the acting and there's so much acting. There's mannered, subtle acting. There is absolutely like basque region, beautiful ham that you can just scrape off the bone with a Swiss Army knife. There is like very cultured black forest ham that you get. You're like, it is absolutely unbelievable. The spread they put out and they just say, dive in, tuck your tie in, maybe put a bib on, but dive into the feast of performances. So I did not really know anything about this story. I have not followed the Gucci family, the Gucci fashion labels, history at all. And this is in many ways this was a surprising story to me. We're talking a lot about, I think the surrounding, not quite campiness, but the excess that makes this such a fun movie, but I was also fortunate to not really know where the movie was going the whole time. So it kind of kept me on the line as a narrative moviegoing experience. Just briefly for the listeners since they have likely not seen this movie by the time we're doing this. So the movie follows protrusa, who is the ambitious wife of maurizio Gucci, patrizia is played by Gaga, Mauricio bay, Adam Driver. Patricia marries her way into this Italian luxury label, the family business is very appealing. For Mauricio, but he's also on the outside of it in some ways. He's attempting to become a lawyer. His father and his father's brother, rodolfo and Aldo played respectively by Jeremy Irons and Al Pacino, neither of whom are from Italy. They really run the company. And Patricia wants in on the company. She wants power. She wants Mauricio to have power. Surrounding them, his cousin, for his cousin, I should say, Paolo Gucci, played by Jared Leto, who we referenced earlier. There are a number of other talented actors in this film Salma Hayek appears as a psychic slash confident Jack Houston appears as a family lawyer..

with Bloomberg pursuits editor Chris rouser Sarah it's really great to have you with us just take us back and tell us how so many years ago you became so immersed in the story to begin with Hi Well thanks for having me I mean this was an incredible story that just really drew me in because there was so many twists and turns and this family fashion dynasty over three generations It was a kind of story that if you made it up people wouldn't believe you It was so so outrageous and so many surprising twists and turns Exactly There were so many twists and turns and it is something that you feel like okay this would be a streaming service but no it was reality You know as you were putting it together because it played out in real time right There was so much coverage What is it that you wanted to dig into Well I was really drawn to the story by the figure of Modesto Gucci And I was covering him as a beat reporter amil and his vision to pilot his family company from sort of an over license sort of cheap and brand to a top tier luxury brand He wanted to make Gucci like Italy's Hermes So he wanted it to be sophisticated He wanted excellent craftsmanship He brought in American creative director and designer and his vision was to take it way up market only as he started putting it into place He had cut off the cash cows he had not really given consumers a chance to figure out that there was a new Gucci and the company was just heading towards bankruptcy And as while this was going on Sara this is Chris You know there was this whole personal side of the saga where he was going through a divorce from his wife Patricia reggiani who was played by Lady Gaga in a film and where he was at least for part of the time in a romantic relationship with sherry which is what our stories about Exactly So I realized that I was it's one thing to write a business story for newspaper but I realized that there was there was a narrative here that had the qualities of a novel and it was by blending the family saga with the business story that I felt that this story really really came to shit to life And I interviewed more than a hundred people for the book I talked to family members I talked to the current and former employees of Gucci But the one person who slipped away was Marty Cebu's girlfriend at the time Well for 7 years her name was sherry McLaughlin She was an American former model who worked in the fashion industry but they actually met sailing in Sardinia As the Italian team was preparing for the 1987 America's cup So sheri didn't want to talk to me at the time that I was right in the book She didn't know what kind of book I was going to write And she ducked my phone calls and didn't answer my emails Well she came out of the woodwork a few months ago and the stills from the movie set started breaking the Internet And I realized as we chatted that she was ready to tell her story All right so you go up to Chris and you go Chris I've got the story Tell me how this came together Well it's actually really exciting to see it out in pursuit today because I was very uncertain whether Bloomberg would be interested in the story because it seemed like such a non Bloomberg story right It was really about the personal side And yet sherry had been at Modi to aside when he was going through some of the toughest fights of his life both with his financial partner investor and with his family He was battling for his uncle's sense of the financial police after him With an accusation that he hadn't signed his father hadn't signed the shares Giving him the 50% control and sent him escaping and a motorcycle across the border into Switzerland where there was no extradition So he was really really grappling with a lot at the time And she was the person who was out of sight trying to help them the whole time All right question for you Chris Were you like yeah of course I'm interested Well I think maybe Sarah thought it felt a little gossipy for business week and I love gossip Especially because this gos really actually informed major news events and also obviously this crime And it was a perspective that Sarah was really excited about hearing and getting out there and sherry's not in the movie her she's not portrayed in the movie because no one knew her story This is really like a missing piece of the saga And it also includes all these great details like Sarah mentioned the publicity stills that broke the Internet You might remember the first stills that came out were of Lady Gaga and Adam Driver playing maurizio in patrizia and they were in Italy and it was so like Italian and 80s and he's wearing white ski pants And sherry told us that he always wore white ski pants because he was a terrible skier So he would fall And by when he would get down to the wine fueled lunch with everybody no one would know that he fell because he was wearing white It's so smart Which is a great little detail that is the kind of thing that's in this story Take us back more than 20 years ago when you were working on this book and you not being actually able to speak to sherry because she actually did approach you You write after the book was out Tell us about that interaction That was really an incredible moment So I had really given up on I had to give up on her My manuscript was going into press and she hadn't responded So I limited my treatment for just a few lines in the book I knew from other people that she had existed But I didn't really have any contours of the relationship or how they had met or what time they spent together And the book came out in 2000 and then the paperback edition came out in 2001 And I was in New York presenting the paperback edition at the early bookstore And I'd finished signing books and everybody was just about leaving And I noticed a tall blond woman standing hanging back looking at me And after the last person left she came up to me with tears in her eyes and she said hi Sarah I'm sherry McLaughlin If I had known you were going to write such a wonderful book I would have talked to you And she gave me a big hug And we both cried So read the book watch the movie that you wanted to dig into Well I was really drawn to the story by the figure of Modesto Gucci And I was covering him as a beat reporter and Milan and his vision to pilot his family company from sort of an over license sort of cheap and brand to a top tier luxury brand He wanted to make Gucci like Italy's Hermes So he wanted it to be sophisticated He wanted excellent craftsmanship He brought in American creative director and designer and his vision was to take it way up market only as he started putting it into place He had cut off the cash cows he had not really given consumers a chance to figure out that there was a new Gucci and the company was just heading towards bankruptcy And as while this was going on Sarah this is Chris There was this whole personal side of the saga where he was going through a divorce from his wife Patricia reggiani who was played by Lady Gaga in the film and where he was at least for part of the time in a romantic relationship with sherry which is what our stories about Exactly So I realized as I was it's one thing to write a business story for newspaper but I realized that there was there was a narrative here that had the qualities of a novel and it was by blending the family saga with the business story that I felt that this story really really came to shit to life And I interviewed more than a hundred people for the book I talked to family members I talked to current and former employees of Gucci but the one person who slipped away was not easy to go to his girlfriend at the time Well for 7 years her name was sherry McLaughlin She was an American former model who worked in the fashion industry but they actually met sailing in Sardinia as the Italian team was preparing for the 1987 America's cup So sheri didn't want to talk to me at the time that I was right in the book She didn't know what kind of book I was going to write And she ducked my phone calls and didn't answer my emails Well she came out of the woodwork a few months ago when the stills from the movie set started breaking the Internet And I realized as we chatted that she was ready to tell her story All right so you go up to Chris and you go Chris I've got this story Tell me how this came together Well it's actually really exciting to see it out in pursuit today because I was very uncertain whether Bloomberg would be interested in the story because it seemed like such a non Bloomberg story right It was really about the personal side and yet sheri had been at loaded to aside when he was going through some of the toughest fights of his life both with his financial partner investor and with his family He was battling for his uncle since the financial police after him Was an accusation that he hadn't signed his father hadn't signed the shares Giving him the 50% control and sent him escaping and a motorcycle across the border into Switzerland where there was no extradition So he was really really grappling with a lot at the time And she was the person who was out of sight trying to help them the whole time All right question for you Chris Were you like yeah of course I'm interested Well I think maybe Sarah thought it felt a little gossipy for business week and I love gossip Especially because this gossip really actually informed major news events and also obviously this crime And it was a perspective that Sarah was really excited about hearing and getting out there and shari is not in the movie her she's not portrayed in the movie because no one knew her story And so this is really like a missing piece of the saga And it also includes all these great details Like Sarah mentioned the publicity stills have broke the Internet You might remember the first stills that came out were of Lady Gaga and Adam Driver playing maurizio and patrizia and they were in Italy and it was so like Italian and 80s and.

"What kind of a show you guys putting on here today? No. No, look, we're going to do this thing. We're going to have a conversation. From Chicago, this is film spotting. I'm Adam Campana, and I'm Josh Larson. It is an empire. You can help the family. Gucci is not exciting, and everybody knows it. At least it's my name, sweetie. Our name. Sweetie. Ah yes, what signals Thanksgiving week more than the sound of a bitter family squabbling. Hadn't thought of House of Gucci as a Thanksgiving movie, but I guess it works. Ridley Scott's true crime drama with Lady Gaga and Adam Driver is one of the titles. We'll get to in this week's roundup of new releases. And we'll talk about the nominees for this year's golden brick award. That and more. Gucci Gucci Gucci. Oh boy. I had on film spotting. Welcome to film spotting. So hear me out on this Josh. You actually weren't part of film spotting when the golden brick award was created, but I'm putting forth a petition to change the name to the Josh Larson. Golden brick award as you're apparently the only one who sees any of these movies. Well, maybe this year that's the case. And that's too much pressure for me. I don't want it. I reject it. Okay, fair enough, and you know what? It's not really accurate anyway. I've done some homework. You're gonna get my take on a couple of these golden bricks shortlisted titles. And I'm gonna throw one into the mix as well. Excellent. More on those golden brick nominees later in the show, but first, we have seen some movies Josh just not all of the same movies recently, and it occurs to me that all three of the films we're going to talk about here are based on real people, though, probably fair to say that none of them could be described as traditional biopics. Let's start with House of Gucci, which open wide on Thanksgiving eve. That's one. You saw that I have yet to have the pleasure of catching up with House of Gucci is the second film in about a month. We've gotten from director Ridley Scott, his period ethic the last duel with Ben Affleck Matt Damon Adam Driver and zero, crazy accent, so I'm told came and went from theaters pretty quickly despite some very positive reviews. That's one. We both are hoping a screener arrives soon for Josh? Yeah, that would be nice and I mean, I'm pretty sure I forget if it's Damon or Affleck, but one of them sports a whopper of an accent I've heard. I've heard. So hopefully we'll get a chance to enjoy that ourselves. Okay. I have been misinformed. Adam Driver returns here in Gucci as maurizio Gucci grandson of the founder of the iconic fashion label. It's the 80s. He's married to Lady Gaga's Portuguese, who has ambitions to shake things up at Gucci. This is all based, of course, on a true story, and also in the film playing Gucci's. How about this merger's road, Josh? Al Pacino. Jeremy Irons, and Jared Leto. A concoction of American and British actors playing Italians with varying degrees of commitment to the accent work. The reports I've seen suggest that it approaches camp maybe it goes so far past camp that we don't even know what to call it. What would you call House of Gucci? Well, that's the question with this movie. And I think, you know, the marketing has kind of set itself up to make that the question at least the trailers that I've seen, even the early stills that were released of Adam Driver and Lady Gaga suggested a camp approach to this. I think if audiences go in, hoping for a two hour and 40 minute, I believe it is. Maybe a little longer. Hoot, they are going to be disappointed because a lot of this is quite dull. Now, other portions do approach camp. And here we go to that tricky question of what is can't mean to you. I've always kind of defaulted to pure camp for me. Are people who are taking the material seriously. Are perhaps aware of its melodramatic possibilities and tendencies and may nudge things a little in that direction here or there. But otherwise, have respect for the material. I don't consider camp to be what Jared Leto is doing in this movie, which is like massacre theater in the heck out of this role. You have a gift I'm.

"maurizio gucci" Discussed on Pop Culture Happy Hour

"The fall is absolutely festooned with new album releases. Its just going to continue. Probably well into october or in the case of abba november. So that is just a kind of brief overview of the onslaught that awaits us is on what a lot of music to listen. Thank you very much stephen. So here's my first pick. The netflix limited series made is ten episodes long. It is based on stephanie. Lands book made hard work low pay and a mothers will to survive. That's made ma. Id it stars margaret qualley. Who you might know from anything from Once upon a time in hollywood to fosse verdon. She's an interesting young actress. Who's been kind of popping up in various different things for a while. She is the lead here. She is in practically. Every scene of this and sheep plays a young single mother who takes her little daughter to try to get away from her boyfriend. And she's not playing stephanie. Land specifically even though stephanie lands book is a memoir she's playing a different character. It's one of those words kind of based on the ideas that came out of the book so after she leaves the boyfriend she winds up getting into working as a maid. But more than that. What this series is about is about the mechanics of being poor so a lot of what it is concerned with is. What is it like to try to deal with. Different systems of government assistance. What is it like to actually try to use those forms of assistance out in the world. What are the requirements. It sounds like i mean it sounds makes things sound boring when you say like. It's part of. It's about paperwork but part of it is about paperwork. It has a as. I said margaret qualley and she is the real life daughter of andie macdowell. An andie macdowell plays her mother. In this andie mcdowell if you've been watching her has been having a really kind of interesting career progression whereafter this kind of ingenue moment. She now you know she did this. Really cool and interesting appearance in in the second magic mike movie where people were like the and i think i think you'll be interested to see her in this. This also stars a nica. Nonni rose who is good in everything. i think. I'm brushing up against the embargo. But it's a secret whether i liked it still. I'm just going to tell you i. I am interested in seeing how people react to it. It is coming out on october first on net flicks and that is my first pick. Now we go to glen for his second pick. Glenn what is your second pick. A second pick is a film called may day which is coming to theaters. I'm afraid which. But it's coming through theaters october first and i'm just going by the trailer here. I wanna make that clear. I haven't seen it. But i am intrigued. Its debut movie written and directed by karen shinora about a young waitress who escapes from her abusive boss by climbing into a restaurant stove and finds herself on an island. That is home to a group of young women who live on a beached submarine and use the submarines radio to lower world war. Two soldiers to their deaths now look. It's a formula for a reason right now. Critics who sought at sundance are a pretty much down the middle. All of them praised the look And when once you check out the trailer you will to The tone the premise but about half of them said it doesn't answer the questions. It raises which i'm going to guess are many. Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't. I don't know but check out the trailer and tell me you're not intrigued. That his mayday in theaters october. First okay thank you. Very much glen. Well then mayday. October first asia. It looks like you also have a movie up for your second pick. Oh yes i do. So i watched maybe the first seven or eight cycles of america's next top model I was obsessed with it. I loved it. I still quote tyrez saying we're all rooting for you. Do we all that was like my one. My one four way into fashion other than that. I don't know anything about fashion. I don't get fashion world. I think it's cold up more into it. But i don't understand it. But yet i am. Very fascinated by house of gucci is going to be indicators on november twenty fourth. Because you've got lady gaga. You've got adam. Driver do jared leto. Jeremy irons summa. Heck al pacino. This cast now often giant blockbuster casts like this do not necessarily mean that the movie is going to be any good and this movie might not be good. But i'm hoping it'll be at least a very fun mess because i it's it's selling very dramatic story. It's got some based off. The trailer has very ryan murphy. Esque feel to it. And maybe i'm just placing that on him. Because i'm thinking of the jani for saatchi show he did. And then the fact that lady gaga has worked with him but lady. gaga's playing patrizia. Reggiani and adam driver is playing maurizio. Gucci and patrizia reggiani was married to gucci who at the time was like the head of obviously up gucci And she apparently hired someone to kill him. And so it's it's got murder it's got it's got lady gaga doing even more dramatic than we saw her doing a star is born so i'm just really excited to see how fund and messy and perhaps who knows not that great movie will be but it looks fabulous. It sounds loud is in it. It's going to be loud. it's going to have a a kind of a sketchy accent. But i mean this trailer grabbed most people in six words. Those six words being father son on house of gucci. Which sounds like she's a vampire but you know what i'm in the close. It's nothing else. All right fascinating house of gucci november twenty fourth. My second pick is a book. I don't wanna be the one who says that. I am always responsible for bringing up and coming writers previously. Unrecognized undiscovered onto your into onto your radar but there is a guy named. What is the name here. Colson whitehead so far has only two pulitzer prizes for pass novels the nickel boys and the underground railroad and he has a new novel coming out called a harlem shuffle which is coming out soon september fourteenth and i think that it is safe to say there are certain authors who you know that when they put a novel out people are going to have a bunch of interesting conversations about it. This is apparently both a family story. And sort of crime fiction taking place in the new york of the nineteen sixties. I believe one of the reasons i picked. This is that. I don't always believe in just because it's this person it's important because i think that can lead to a little bit of like here's what the cannon is and he here are the insiders and outsiders and all that stuff but here is somebody where it's like. Okay if this is who wrote this then you're going to want to have this on your radar and you're going to want to kind of have that in your in your line of sight so again. September fourteenth harlem shuffle colson. Whitehead going for the The three peat of posts a hat trick pulitzer prizes. So that is my second pick stephen. You're going to bring us.

"Talk about lloyd. Okay then elvis elvis and the morning show they completely turn you on saturday morning show. Can you do the show you know. There's always something new to watch. I mean net flicks and in. Hbo max they're always coming up with some new content. I watch new shows. And it's this is why we have danielle around. She keeps us up to date on. What's new right whatever. Once in a while it's good to go back and start watching something that's been out for a while so this series called younger seven seasons i think during their seven season debbie measures in there along with hilary duff and anyway the whole plotline is. It's from a novel about a woman who wants to be. I believe in the publishing business. If i'm not mistaken but she needs to be younger to fit in then she so she has to take on an identity. A younger woman right. So okay filling in the blanks. Yeah she was a stay at home. Mom for twenty years. She's in her forties. She goes through his bad divorce and then she's got back to work but nobody wants to hire a forty year old as a as a you know an assistant in the publishing industry so she pretends to be twenty five right. And i'm just thinking like i think i could do that. I think i could play. I get mistaken for like late. Twenties early thirties all the time right. And i think i could legitimately do that. Like elvis out. How old do you think you could pretend to be or how young i think i think young down to about fifty six. Maybe maybe you know. If i really took care of my skin moisturizer scary was saying that he he. He could pass off someone in his thirties. Go out at night and and these people say by the end of the night like you look like you're in your early to mid thirty s. Because i've had a couple of that i do have a theory that i don't think we are as old as our parents were when they were our age. That makes no sense. Look here on one more second. We don't look as old as our parents did. So let's say you're thirty five years old today if three five hundred today and your your parents are dirty pitch them. They looked like they were fifty-five several reasons first of all we dressed differently in another thing to keep in mind is Your your mind is a little warped would as it comes to age and what you look like. And i'll give you an example. Go back and look at high school photos of you and your friends then then go to a class reunion and see how anxious and everyone else looks but you think you don't look that old the thing the thing is blanche do older. Yes you do. The other day. I was like. Why did everyone in my class. Age so poorly. What does it look so old. What's going on. And then i was like whoa you to do things about my mom. She was when she was my age. Wow a time people would tell me. That's what she was. Call your mom and tell her what a mill is and you just call. Her went on the air. I'm the age right. Now that my dad was when i graduated high school and my my dad was nowhere near as fun as i am. He was gone. I have a good time. I act like i'm twelve. I still do dumb stuff wa well. I've had you know a couple of things happened. However i still had more fun. My dad was nowhere near this much fun. I wish i would. I wish i would've acted like that what you're what you guys are forgetting. Is this when you're a kid and you're looking at your parents. You think of them as old you don't think of them as younger looking than the rest of their their their friends using old because they don't they they think you're stupid. They they do things that seem so old. Well guess what. You're doing the same things they were doing back. Then i promise you you're saying they can nate keeps throwing shade at everyone else like how old you look. I could be twenty-five but you you look old no okay. I'll strokes had to add a couple years on your looks a little little gray hair. But everybody that i'm looking at right now. Zimmerman tell you. The one person that i think could definitely pass for younger. And it's danielle. I'm telling you you would never know. She's sixty four looking front. Everyone just like wittstein. You'll skincare routine like she looks. Danielle you do not look. You're a and that's not like a backhanded compliment. You do not when you just accuser being sixty four years old so you're definitely showing some mileage so pipe down. Scary has the weirdest conversations with people at bars at the end of the night. Everyone just tells me looks thirty five wasted at that time. That's what tell you what. Here's the thing go watch younger. And let's get back on this another day and you you you perceive things so differently than the reality there. So we'll get into that. Let's get into the daniel report danielle. Who is looking and sounding very young today. very young. what going on all right. So let's start out talking about house of gucci With lady gaga adam. Driver jared leto. It's a true crime. Dramatization of one italy's most notorious murders. The story of the murder of the one time head of the gucci fashion house maurizio gucci. And of. course we're getting a first look at how amazing everybody looks as these characters called house of gucci and it's hitting theaters on november twenty. Four th so get ready for that one so beautiful awesome. What's so great about it. They took the period and made it real with all the cars and the architecture and the way they dress i mean it's sixties and seventies or seventy nine hundred seventy s. I mean it's just incredible and gaga looks flawless. She does she looks amazing. She owns it all right all right. So michael j. took a social and apparently was like. Oh my gosh. I have so many jokes about simone biles. Is it too soon. So of course people were pissed off and they slammed him now. He's claiming he was hacked and that wasn't really him but i don't know and i love michael j. so i don't know i wanna give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he was hacked. I don't know what do you think we think. And george clooney and his family were among those caught in the devastating floods and mudslides that hit northern italy earlier this week. He was there vacationing with his family and more than sixty people had to be rescued in a bunch of different towns because of the extreme weather. The clooney's weren't hurt. There was no property damage. Thankfully everybody is okay and a lot of people were excited. That black widow was not just in your theaters. But it was on disney plus. We'll i'll tell you who wasn't happy about it. Black widow herself scarlett johansson. Apparently she sued disney over the hybrid release because they she said it was breach-of-contract and she wasn't getting as much money as she would have made if it just went to the box office. So they're they're not really happy with her right now. They're going back and forth with this. So i'll keep you posted bertha. That was really interesting. And since we're talking about age losey everts. Mom just found his birth certificate and apparently he's been celebrating the wrong birthday. Oh no wrong. He's a year younger than he thought he will.
