"'cause I have a sneaking suspicion, Joe, that data that we just showed, that mass murders are actually correlated with the availability of the AR-15. Right. Of assault weapons. And so it seems to me that there could be a general agreement among all Americans that that weapon should not be in the hands of America. That it shouldn't be on our streets. And so if we can't make that decision, it's not just simply about Republicans in the NRA and the gun law. It's about us. If we can't fight to get those weapons off our streets. So we can protect our big. That's congressman Eddie glaude junior on MSNBC the morning joke earlier today mass murders are actually correlated with the availability of the AR-15, I have to disagree. I mean, I'm no medical or psychological professional, but I can tell you, I think mass murders are any murders, typically happen by crazy people. And maybe that's not the right word to use, but the mentally ill or somebody that's seriously enraged, not the availability of a particular weapon. But that's my position. Here to help us make sense of what's going on with these individuals that are mentally ill like the shooter in Texas, Mauricio Garcia, or even the in availability of the manifesto from the previous shooting, is one of our favorites here on America at night, doctor Carol Lieberman, MD MPH, psychiatrist and therapist. You might know her as America's terrorist therapist. Doctor Carroll, welcome. Thank you so much. Always a pleasure to have you. So let's talk a little bit about this. I can't help but think when I see an article, military dot com, Yahoo, news as well. Texas mall shooter failed army infantry infantry training over mental health and clearly there were all sorts of signs that this guy had issues. It's not a question of are we doing enough to screen people for guns, which is definitely a question. But the bigger question to me is how we're not providing more of support system to individuals with mental health. What's your take? Yes, absolutely. That is the really underlying issue. And it's only gotten worse with the pandemic and the lockdowns because a lot of people who were getting mental health help were locked down and a lot of there was less availability of psychiatrists and psychologists. And it's interesting with the Texas shooter, he actually makes some comments about he on social media. They're looking at all his comments and there are some about he's talking about his mental health and he's talking about the mental health system and he says, I don't think any psychologist would be able would have been able to help me. It clearly it seems like the mental health system failed him and how much effort he made to get help from psychiatrists or psychologists, but he fell through the cracks in any case. Right. And I think it goes to a lot of things. I mean, if you know that you can't get through the military because of that, I'm hoping there's some sort of safety net somewhere that says, hey look, we can't have you here because you have these issues. But you've got to go here and get the support and maybe he did go. Maybe he didn't go, maybe they referred him to the VA. I'm just thinking, you know, this is an area where we need to do that. And to me, it's silly, egregious, and dangerous, if you will, to even think that this is something that we could blame on the availability of weapons as opposed to on someone that's clearly having a problem with mental health. Yeah, of course, this was yet again another great example for those who want to ban guns to come out and say, you see? You know, here's yet another example of why we should ban guns. I mean, that's what people who are of that political bent want to say. But no, totally ignoring the mental health aspects. And then if you talk about the mental health, there are those who would say, oh, well, don't stigmatize people with mental illness. Well, not necessarily. And then I don't think we should stigmatize people with mental illness, but we certainly need to call the state of state and get help for those people. And this all started years ago, at least a decade ago, probably more, when the mental health, the state mental hospitals, were closed because with the idea that it would be better for people to have less restriction. The least, the better, the idea was that if you let the people out of the mental hospitals and you just assign them to their local clinic, that then they would have the least restrictive environment. That was the key. The buzzword. These restrictive environment so that if people are home and then they can go to a mental health clinic and get medication and maybe get therapy if they're lucky, then that's the best way to go. Well, in fact, it was a ridiculous plan from the get go because people would serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia or manic depressive illness by polar. When they stop taking their medication, they become psychotic again. So they can't find their way literally or figuratively to a local mental health clinic. And so after, you know, the medication runs

"And I'm Sean Anderson. Thanks for being with us. Now to the war in Ukraine, it was a muted victory day in Moscow. It's the day set aside to commemorate the Russian victory over Nazis in World War II. Today, Russian president Vladimir Putin oversaw a military parade that was missing some key elements like warplanes and tanks. WTO national security correspondent JJ green joined us earlier with more. Last year, just two months into the war with Ukraine, there were dozens of Russian tanks on display at this event. This year, just one loan, Soviet era T-34 tank rolled down the street in red square. After scores of airplanes streaked across the sky at last year's event, there was not one single airplane or helicopter on display today. They've all either been destroyed or they're busy in the fighting with Ukraine. In contrast, most of the rest of Europe is celebrating Europe day today. European Commission, president Ursula von der leyen, used this occasion to go to Kyiv to stand with that country that lost thousands of its citizens to Russia's relentless missile drone and bomb attacks. WTO peace JJ green. Meantime, we have the latest down the deadly shooting at the Dallas area outlet mall that took place over the weekend. It only took less than four minutes for 33 year old Mauricio Garcia to gun down 8 innocent people before being shot by police. Investigators are now learning more about the shooter and why he opened fire. CBS News senior investigative correspondent Catherine herridge joined us earlier with some details. There does appear to be evidence of premeditation. The suspect was doing research online about the busiest periods at that mall, which would suggest that he planned to launch an attack when he could inflict the most casualties. Marriage says investigators also found evidence Garcia had an intense fascination with white

"Back. We're taking your calls on. This topic and everything else we're discussing. 8 three three four Valdez a three three four 8 two 5 three three 7. And what I wanted to circle back to was some breaking news on the shooter. We have some breaking news in the shooter again. We know the shooter is a former military person. That was not successful in getting through the infantry school in the army and now is killed single reports for 8 people or 9 people as young as three years old and there's some of the people that he shot were of color, he himself is of color. It's fascinating that this is where we are and again, these details only matter when that's part of the issue. And I think that's what the FBI is trying to make the issue. Trying to say that this guy was motivated by white supremacy and that he was, in fact, part of a group. SS lightning bolts and the swastika over his heart. Now, TMZ is reporting that this image is an image on his bicep, it says Texas, and then he's got these lightning bolts and the swatches together, but they don't show his face. I don't know if that's him or not. I don't know if it's real or not. And I think that's where people are skeptical because it's not like the FBI has the most stellar reputation. I wish they did. I'd love to support them. We've got family in federal law enforcement. But lamentably, we've seen things be contorted into things they're not, right? So we'll keep an eye on this. But this is what they're accusing him of now. Of having these tattoos and conveniently the picture that they're displaying of all places on TMZ is without the guy's face. There's also a social media that allegedly belongs to the guy that has a picture of some body armor. And the body armor has the punisher skull, the punisher skull over a Texas flag and the punisher's skull next to a another patch on the bulletproof vest. Which their indicating on TMZ to mean a right wing death squad. Now, I can only imagine that people of all walks of life fall susceptible to different things. Whether it's falling into gang life, Bloods or the crips or MS 13 or any of those gangs. Or gang like this one. If that's in fact the case, I just, it seems very atypical. To have, you know, a guy with a man bun or a ponytail. Named Mauricio Garcia. And to be accepted into a group of guys that would have lightning bolts and I guess it makes me wonder, has the white supremacists or the neo Nazis have they now become woke are they also employing diversity, equity and inclusion tactics in their recruitment? Are they saying, you know what? In our mission for the Aryan nation and to promote white supremacy, perhaps we need to diversify our look a little bit and bring in some Latino flavor. Maybe we excuse me, LatinX flavor. And I don't mean to make light of the shooting, I'm making light of this bizarre. Story here that this guy is the brown face of white supremacy. It sounds contrived to me. And again, I got nothing to gain or lose by being skeptical on a story like this, but I've been around long enough to know that every now and again, you see stories like this and then a few months turns out, oh, this was not reported right or whatever. I don't know if it is or isn't. But I do know I had questions surrounding the shooting that occurred in Kenosha, Wisconsin. When the media told me that Kyle rittenhouse had taken a rifle over state lines that was illegal to possess and did so with the purpose of being a vigilante in Kenosha when he was in Ohio or whatever and whatnot. And then through an entire trial and a jury of his peers, one fact after another came to light that proved him innocent and proved that the guilty party was the media for lying to America, turning this kid into some vigilante killer when it turned out his parents were divorced and his dad lived in Kenosha and that he was involved in the community and cleaning graffiti and Kenosha Wisconsin and was involved in safety patrol groups and whatnot and that he did have a rifle that he was legally allowed to have used and possessed and whatever and whatnot. And was cleared of any crimes. And ended up suing CNN and the rest of the media for how they've maligned him. And one, you know, so these are in the process of winning and whatnot or how to settlement. So I look at that and I say, that's just one of the most not most egregious, but one of the more recent examples. You also had Nick Sandman, right? Where that kid, they had the video of him and it was made to look like starting and stopping the tape at a certain point. Like he was somehow harassing a Native American when it turned out to be the other way around and the media trashed this kid who was on a school trip with his Christian school from Covington, Kentucky. And again, same thing, totally turning the story around to make it look like this kid was the evil white supremacist getting in the face of the Native American. And again, I'm not pro whiter pro Native American. I'm just saying the media lied and this kid had a huge payday. When he sued the media. And the media doesn't always get it right. And I know there's people listening right now. They're just saying, hey, Valdez, you're part of the media. Yeah, but I'm big enough boy to say sometimes we get things wrong, and that's

"There, good evening and what's up America I am rich valdes valdes with an S by the way at rich valdes and all of the social media and our telephone number if you want to join the national conversation here late night live 8 6 6 5 O 5 46 26 our legacy line or of course 8 three three four Valdez. Now I want to get into what I think is arguably the biggest story of the day and it's been the biggest story of the weekend, which is the shooting in Texas. And there's multiple angles on this story. It's a tragedy, obviously, a 9 killed children included just absolutely horrible happened in Allen, Texas, which is in the Dallas area. And horrible. And honestly, it was a not really trending story. Until the government said that they'd found some postings from this individual online and that there were let me see the wording that they used because I find that interesting. Let's see here. Yeah, yeah. Here it is. Listen to this headline. Texas mall shooter ranted against Jews, women and racial minorities on an apparent social media page. That was at that moment is when this story, the fact that 9 people were killed, children among them. And my condolences to those families absolutely horrible. But it was until that time. And I find this in and of itself to be very disparaging. It's a disgusting phenomena, if you will. The fact that there's outrage now because they believe that this guy had interacted with accounts that were linked to white supremacy or whatever. And again, it's probably a stretch at best. The guy is a mentally ill Hispanic guy, Mauricio Gonzalez. Who doesn't look like any of Nazi? Doesn't have a neo Nazi name. And I guess that doesn't make you a neo Nazi, right? I think there are, I'm sure there are people that have interests that are not aligned with their own. I'm sure that's a thing. You know what I mean? We see it in politics. We see it all over the place. So, I mean, you really could have a brown guy that is the face of white supremacy, I guess you could have it. And so it seems unlikely to me. That this guy would go on a shooting rampage because of that and in reality I think that the big issue here is that he was a former military man. And he didn't get out of infantry school because of his mental illness, and it was known that he had this mental illness. And again, if things were the way they were supposed to work, the way they're supposed to work, this might be something potentially that we could avoid. Right? By understanding this situation better. But we don't know. And what's interesting is that the investigators haven't yet made public what drove this army veteran Mauricio Garcia, excuse me. I called him Gonzalez. To open fire on the folks at that mall. But what we do know is that he was unsuccessful as a soldier. And it was because of his mental health issues. And I think there's really a need to focus on this area, right? Because you have to be a special kind of you fill in the word, right? I'm going to use stupid. A special kind of stupid. To think that

"At around $27,900. That's a Bloomberg business flash. Now here's Michael Barr with more on what's going on around the world, Michael. Here and thank you very much, federal investigators are looking into a motive after a gunman killed 8 people at a Dallas area mole. Federal agents are said to be reviewing social media accounts. They believe Mauricio Garcia used and posts that expressed interest in white supremacists and neo Nazi views. Russia attacked the key region with 35 Iranian made drones overnight. According to the Ukrainian air force all the drones were shot down by air defense. In the NBA eastern semifinals, the 76ers, even the series at two games each beating the seljuks in overtime one 16 one 15 in the NHL playoffs, the Devils beat the hurricanes in game three, New Jersey still trails the series two games to one. Baseball, the Yankees mad tutorials Red Sox giant's nays all lost the nationals one. Global news 24 hours a day powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts in over a 120 countries, a Michael Barr. This is Bloomberg. Now, a look at the front pages. What's making news around the world? Your daily roundup of today's headlines from major publications. 6 24 on Wall Street, I'm Nathan Hager checking the front pages with Bloomberg Steve rapoport as you watch the bounce back in regional stocks this morning, Steve, the Financial Times has a story out this morning about one trouble in particular for Silicon Valley bank. That's right, Nathan. We're talking about the bank's Chinese partner SPD silicon bank. They are still operating despite SVB selling off assets like its loan book and UK operations. And according to the Financial Times, the president of SBD made an email statement said as far as what to do for moving forward in terms of the foreign stake in the venture bank they're communicating with different regulators, complicating the issue because you're dealing with regulators in two different countries, different sets of rules so that's what's holding this up and they're trying to get that sorted out Nathan. All right, let's turn to The New York Times which has a really interesting story this morning about theranos cofounder Elizabeth Holmes apparently trying to do a little more image remaking before she reports to federal prison. Yes, remaking and some R and R, according to The New York Times, Elizabeth Holmes spoke in great length about what she did during her time preparing for her case and one of those things included a trip to Burning Man. And in the interview as well, Elizabeth Holmes talks about traveling the country in an RV, doing yoga in parking lots, and this is all ahead of the case that was being built against her. This article, by the way, Nathan is really a piece designed to show that Elizabeth Holmes is not the black turtleneck raspy voice entrepreneur that we once knew. In fact, the headline is Liz Holmes wants you to forget about Elizabeth Holmes. They show pictures of her as a mom. It's all ahead of the sentencing, which she has or the reporting to prison, which she has since appealed so we don't know when that will happen So apparently she's had some free time before her time gets a lot more regimented. Finally, Steve, The Washington Post with yet another sign of just how difficult this economy is getting for many Americans. Yes, we were talking about new cars now. You remember back in the day, you were kind of king of the day when you had brought a new car down the block. Well, that's becoming a little more unreachable these days based on The Washington Post story, according to Kelly blue book, the average price of a new car in the U.S. now topping $48,000, and that's up 30% from 2020. And what's the problem well, according to The Washington Post, there are issues on both ends. First, you have demand rising interest rates and on top of that because of supply chain issues, automakers were putting more emphasis on pricier models. And so once again, that puts things further out of reach for middle income earners. So not sure when this is coming down despite inflation, maybe slowing down interest rates possibly pausing and supply chain issues getting resolved as The Washington Post points out. This could not be resolved for a while. Yeah, when we put so much focus on the impact of higher interest rates than when you think about the supply chain issues that the car industry has been dealing with. It is still a squeeze for many Americans to get into that new car. Thanks, as always, Bloomberg Steve rappaport with our look at the morning front pages. Up next, we'll get the latest on the debt ceiling. Secretary Yellen's warning of a constitutional crisis plus a new polling low for President Biden. That's coming up in our 6 30 news. First, let's look at today's Bloomberg weather forecast. High pressure takes back control of the weather and the cladding of gives way to sunshine this morning it's going to be breezy temperatures up to 75 today. Another system

Some of them are migrants, along with some of the injured. We had the number between four to 6. Now the injured parties have gone up to ten. It could be just an accidental one or it could be intentional that no point with the browser police department has stated that it's intentional. The driver was arrested on a reckless driving charge. "Federal officials were looking into whether the gunman who killed 8 people to Dallas area mall was a white supremacist, as they worked to try to discern a motive for the attack. Federal agents have been reviewing social media accounts that they believe 33 year old Mauricio Garcia used and posts that expressed interest in white supremacist and neo Nazi views. Garcia also had a patch on his chest when he was killed by police that read RW DS, an acronym for the phrase right wing death squad, which is popular among white extremists and white supremacy groups as incited by disgraced former president Donald Trump, and some Republican lawmakers. The Texas Department of Public Safety identified Garcia as suspected of killing 8 people at a Texas outlet mall, a day after the attack turned an afternoon of shopping into a massacre. Garcia was fatally shot on Saturday by a police officer who happened to be near the suburban Dallas mall. A law enforcement official said investigators had been searching a Dallas motel near an interstate where Garcia had been staying. The official said they also found multiple weapons at the scene after Garcia was killed, including an AR-15 style rifle, and a handgun. In a statement, president Joe Biden said the assailant wore tactical gear and fired an AR-15 style rifle. He again urged Congress to enact tighter restrictions on firearms and ammunition, but it's unlikely the Republican led Congress will bother as with each mass shooting, their resolve grows stronger. An SUV slammed into a crowd of people waiting for a bus on Sunday outside a migrant shelter in the border city of Brownsville, Texas, killing at least 7 people and injuring at least ten police said, as they prepared to arrest the hospitalized driver. With no bench at the unmarked city bus stop, some of the victims were sitting on the curb around 8 30 a.m., when the driver hit them surveillance video from the bishop Enrique San Pedro ozanam center showed. Shelter director Victor Maldonado said the SUV ran up the curb, flipped and continued moving for about 200 feet. Some people walking on the sidewalk about 30 feet from the main group were also hit. Witnesses detained the driver as he tried to run away and held him until police arrived. Victims struck by the vehicle were waiting for the bus to return to downtown Brownsville after having spent the night at the overnight shelters, said sister Norma pimentel, executive director of Catholic charities of the Rio Grande valley, most of the victims were Venezuelan men melting said. Brownsville has seen a surge of Venezuelan migrants over the past two weeks for unclear reasons authorities said. On Thursday, 4000 of about 6000 migrants in border patrol custody in Texas Rio Grande valley were Venezuelan. The surge in the number of migrants this week has prompted Brownsville commissioners to indefinitely extend a declaration of emergency during a special meeting earlier this week, Brownsville has long been an epicenter for migration across the U.S. Mexico border, and it's become a key location of interest for next week's end to pandemic era border restrictions known as title 42. The username shelter is the only overnight shelter in the city and manages the release of thousands of migrants from federal custody. Artificial intelligence could pose a more urgent threat to humanity than climate change, AI pioneer Jeffrey Hinton said, in an interview, Hinton widely known as one of the godfathers of AI recently announced he had quit Google after a decade at the firm saying he wanted to speak out on the risks of the technology without it affecting his former employer. Hinton's work is considered essential to the development of contemporary AI systems in 1986 he co authored the seminal paper learning representations by backpropagating errors, a milestone in the development of the neural networks under girding AI technology. In 2018, he was awarded the Turing award in recognition of his research breakthroughs. But he is now among a growing number of tech leaders publicly espousing concern about the possible threat posed by AI if machines were to achieve greater intelligence than humans and take control of the planet. I wouldn't like to devalue climate change, I wouldn't like to say you shouldn't worry about climate change. That's a huge risk to Hinton said, but I think this might end up being more urgent. He added with climate change, it's very easy to recommend what you should do. You just stop burning carbon. If you do that, eventually things will be okay. For AI, it's not at all clear what you should do. Microsoft backed OpenAI fired the starting pistol on a technological arms race in November when it made AI powered chatbot chat GPT available to the public. It soon became the fastest growing app in history, reaching a 100 million monthly users in two months. In April, Elon Musk joined thousands in signing an open letter, calling for a 6 month pause in the development of systems more powerful than OpenAI's recently launched GPT four, while Hinton shares signatures concerns that AI may prove to be an existential threat to mankind. He disagreed with pausing research. In the European Union, a committee of lawmakers responded to the Musk backed letter, calling on U.S. president Joe Biden to convene a global summit on the future direction of the technology with European commissioner president Ursula von der leyen. Last week, the committee agreed a landmark set of proposals targeting generative AI, which would force companies like OpenAI to disclose any copyright material used to train their models.
