"Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. The boycott she yesterday, you had the other sports world. React the dodgers game with San Francisco postponed. So where the Games between the brewers and the reds, padres and mariners. Several black baseball players including Jason, heyward and the cardinals outfielder. Dexter Fowler weren't in their team's LINEUPS and I'm not sure where we're headed today because you have the board of Governors, the owners meeting, and then you also have the players meeting as well as bringing Chris Mannix from sports illustrated, get an update from the bubble. First of all, you did a great job last night you and Chris from Yahoo Sports where my lifeline to this in what was going on. So just want to compliment you on. Doing what you do well being a reporter but walk me through last night late last night. How tense that this get? It got pretty tense in that room and the the meeting was really divided into two separate meetings You had one meeting which had the full compliments of NBA players and coaches who were divided into the mix and everybody speaking doc rivers spoke passionately about his experiences. Maurice Lucas of the John Lucas have the Houston Rockets. He spoke at this meeting Armond, Hill assistant coach with the Clippers he spoke at this meeting. and. Coaches were involved in the discussions about what to do moving forward. After about an hour the players asked the coaches to leave and they started to hash things out. There are a lot of voices that were heard in this room Dan, the meeting was led by Chris Padraig with dollar, but there were dozens of players from Jalen Brown, the Damian Lillard Carmelo, Anthony who spoke up and at strong things to say. How ended Very much unclear I mean the Lakers Clippers said that they were ready to leave. It's unclear if them saying they're ready to leave was then saying we're done or them saying that's our position on this. So the meeting ended with a lot of ambiguity about where this league, where these players are GonNa go moving forward have had further meetings this morning from what I've been told some key players have met on these issues the board of governors meeting. As you mentioned, it's happening as we speak we're GONNA know a lot more about the future of the NBA. When when this board of Governors meeting over and we get some clarity on where the league and the players we're less than five hours away from nuggets, jazz? The first game schedule and I was told last night that there won't be basketball today. Is there any official upgrade? Now I like five minutes ago I asked a top. Ranking League official for any kind of update and there was not but I it's impossible to believe. They'll play today you. I've talked to coaches that are operating. Like there's no games to the coaches that have games today are not going through the routines that they would have if they were playing what is the role of the commission today? I think the role of Adam silver is to fully. Grasp and understand and narrow down what the players want from owners and present that to owners in a way that gets this league moving again because one of the takeaways from last night. So the people I talked to in the room was that players want more done on voting issues. Players want more done on police reform, but there really wasn't any kind of. Action Plan that the players were ready to present to owners. That that would satisfy their needs and all this and owners Dan are some of them are kind of sitting back and saying look we feel like we've done a lot. For this this this movement for players Here Bay you know when? Along with the Social Justice messages on the Jersey they have been extremely supportive of players taking a knee during the national anthem. When what happened last night with the bucks happened the bucks ownership group. The top three people came out with an immediate statement insupportable that owners two weeks ago committed. Three hundred million dollars over the next ten years to improve areas of the of the black community. Economically, you can say they're really rich they can do that threat. A million dollars is not nothing. It's just not. So owners kind of sitting back and saying we've done a lot here. What more do you want us to do? I think Adam Silver. Narrowing down what the players would find to be sick not be acceptable and present that the owners in a way that makes them go along with it I support but I would say something Dan that's come up a lot in the last twelve hours. Adam. Silver's not here. Mark Tatum is not here. The two highest ranking League officials are not here in the bubble. Now, there may be very good reasons for that. But one of the ways that a commissioner or deputy commissioner can connect with players is to understand what they're going through right now, and the experience of the bubble has exacerbated and magnified the feelings these players are having. Paul George spoke. On what he was going through the other night but he's not alone in those feelings. There are a lot of players that are feeling a mental burden as a result of being in this bubble an Adam silver not being here and Martinez not being here. They just can't shared the same perspective that players have because they haven't experienced everything players are experience. Is there a chance that the season get shutdown? Veteran. Player tell me in the immediate aftermath of what the bucks did that the season was in jeopardy. I don't know in the aftermath of that meeting last night if that feeling has been strengthened or weakened, but I do know that because the bucks did this. They did this unilaterally, they know the bucks. Because of of this happening in their backyard, you know what happened Jacob Blake, they decide news unilaterally. Orlando was the floor they're ready to play about one hundred yards up the hill. You had Chris Paul and Oklahoma City players starting to warm up for their game. So the bucks I mean the bucks in the Locker Room Dan like all the players in that. Locker. Room. Were wearing their jerseys. So this happened. You know their decision not to play happen very quickly before the start of the game. But when the bucks did this in a way, they kind of put players in a tough spot because now some players, the ones that I've talked to people that are close to them have said to me. Well, we did this we made a statement, but does the statement matter if we turn around and played forty eight hours are. What what are we gain? If we just delayed the start of the season forty, eight hours there are players. Now that are saying, you know now that they've done, this doesn't have to be something tangible in real done from all this I mean frankly said this the other day it's rings true to me. Now like at some some point players making we've got to put our stuff on the line here. We have got to put our money where I'm out is we're willing to to really sacrifice. We may be willing to walk away. Talking to Chris Mannix joining us from the bubble. The course senior writer for sports illustrated a couple of items though basketball. Wise. You got some openings here the pacers firing nate McMillan. Gregg Popovich. Is that a real possibility for the nets that he would actually take over as the head coach? It's the longest launch shots because. I don't get the sense that popped wants to move. Off of Tonio I think he's still wants to keep coaching. I don't believe that is coaching.

"Know when you're GONNA get some flowers call one eight hundred flowers or if your tax trouble your tax trouble call optima tax relief and let them know you heard heard their commercial on this show. Okay there you go anyway vitamin little. Hey little clipper fan. So I all but Marcus Morris yesterday go at Joel and beat the Lakers. Had nobody like that team. You can't have a braun do that. you okay. I didn't force her like Maurice Lucas Metta world peace I mean is is going to do that with yellow hair. Dwight Howard is going to run into. The tunnel is blocked on a lot going on right there. Thank you Steve. First of all to running the tunnel is a great visual. I don't it's true or not but that's very funny and coups yellow hair. I think what he's getting at is an interesting point that last night. Marcus Morris and Joel embiid get tangled up underneath the basket. Let's get to get their arms kind of intertwined and they did that. MBA thing where they're kinda hooking each other and one guy shoves the other guy that everybody runs into. Nothing really happens right but the Lakers. Don't I have a wildcard. The Lakers don't have one of those guys is GonNa Punch me or not you know I don't I don't think he's going to punch me but he might the only guy that's like that is Rondo and Rondo just hasn't been effective enough to get enough tied all of the the steps to get to that point where he's out there in the cause run. Goes Chris Paul. Rondo walkout walkout card. Yes listen we don't have that guy. And as part of the reason why some some on the top tier teams. It's filling up. The Lakers are soft. Now I'm not of that Ilk. I don't I do not believe that the Lakers are sought. But we don't have a guy that if he looks at you a certain kind of face you need to pay attention to Marcus Morris. You're absolutely right. They didn't swing but even when he was walking going away. You're keeping you keep an eye on is just like when I walk downtown and night and it's like I walk by somebody's going yeah. You Ain't GonNa came out and you just in case you know everyone else is to it. I don't know maybe it's just me. It's like a dog that you don't know okay. Cool cool where is he aware. He's over there. I got him. Okay right I know we need one now. Yeah I ball catchers. Let's try one more in the sprint people's hotline. Let's go to Lorenzo Lorenzo. You're on the morning show. What's up? Dog enjoy the show frank. We don't care about me. WALKIE FAIRLY UTAH Denver or other teams down the hall from us. We got a dog on the team by Rondo. And I won't charter. Apologize when we get into the playoffs and Rondo number shoot up like they always have always will and we got another dog that sitting on a bench. That's not playing yet as Boogie. Not only that. When abroad made that statement he put all that weight on his shoulder? Hold it. This is our chip. Because he know if he don't win this championship he will not be allowed in. The LAKER. Family Lakers diehard a hard. Thank you Lorenzo We apologize on Tuesdays so we'll have to wait for your apology into a Tuesday. For first of all I was just like to say we've always been waiting for playoff Rondo. We were just about playoff Rondo yesterday. So we're not being disrespectful. Playoff Rondo which is concerned by regular-season. Rondo because we need regular-season Rondo closer to playoffs. Rondo in order for Lebron James to get more of a breather during the regular season. That's difference and two. I said as you know the week that Koby past and I'm gonNA keep on saying. We cannot conflate when he a championship with trying trying to win it all for Kobe couldn't agree more. We can't confront those two because just like Daimler didn't give a damn but I let a ceremony. There are teams. That are just as hungry as the Lakers. Just as talented and some you could say even more talented that are trying to get a championship too and that does not mean. Ron DidN'T WANNA put his arm when a championship and try and Dwarf Kobe or do for the team it just means that they got beat by better squat. I hope everybody understands that. I'm not being disrespectful in any way shape or form but one has nothing to do with the other. It has nothing to do with the other day. They want to win because they WANNA win. They want to honor Kobi's legacy for sure but for all the reasons you just laid out. It doesn't a matter. There are other teams in the League. That are coming for them. They're coming for whoever the opponent might be. They're not going to see those uniforms and feel a certain way you know. They've had a tough season because because of a terrible tragedy they're going to be coming after them on every single night and you better play well because you play well and no other reason remember. The Yankees did did not win after nine. Eleven to the world series but the D. bag says. Yeah but we want this chip and took absolutely absolutely all right. Speaking of the world series the dodgers I have jock Peterson and Ross stripling back in the field. That's good news. They're both very good players. There is a math problem or real math problem. That they gotta figure out what tell you what it is next on the morning show seven ten any SPN. When you're looking for the perfect way to surprise the most important people in your life the only place to go is one eight hundred flowers dot com?.

"Am I right? Don't don't you. I'm not sure I mean, I get what you're saying. But I mean, like Anthony Davis is the boss here. Like, I know agree. But I agree. But I think that everything has a back story to it. Things. Just don't come out. All of a sudden, you know, there's anything you see that happens in Chicago. You know, there's a backstory everything I mean, I don't care what it is. There's always a backstory, and I have a hard time because they've been they've probably been to public. And I think that's why you saw the fine. I think I think everybody around LeBron has been maybe a little too public about their desires and truth of the matter is when you're public about stuff people are always going to have suspicions and taking over the NBA building our own agency all that kind of stuff getting guys that are currently in the league under a contract. I think that I think that it's a natural thing to have suspicions about what's what's the back story here. What's the end game for the people running the operation? I agree with you. Davis is the boss here. Anthony Davis probably in the right spot would be as powerful guys originally. But if you believe in yourself that much. Didn't use an agent. Maybe he's a little more independent has look I could be I was gonna say, Danny. How hasn't part of the story been? I mean, everyone thinks from what I understand everyone thinks a lot of not just the player Anthony Davis. But the guy the kid, you would know him better than us, Dan. But the story kind of was that he has shied away from wanting this to become public until the last minute right because he wanted to show respect as much as he possibly could to the pelicans and wanted to do this quote unquote in the right way. But ultimately also try to flex his muscles and get ultimately what he wanted. Play both sides. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. You know, you can look nobody has any problem particularly in the NBA with guys making massive money. Right. Right. Nobody has any problem with the money. They're throwing around, and I think everybody would be sympathetic. Anthony Davis is you know, they brought in boogie cousins that did work. He's he's he's kept his mouth quite great kid by all accounts, national champion, didn't even I don't think scored national championship game has never been about himself. But now all of a sudden it comes out, and let's be honest. You have people that are going to say good for Anthony Davis. What he should do when you're gonna have people that say, well, what about the team you're playing what about your teammates? What about your fans that? If you didn't want to come out, and you are the boss, then it shouldn't have come out. I never believed whether it's politics or sports, whatever I I never believed that things just well, they just happened to come out. I mean, somebody you know, I was talking to Chris Ballard. He was he was in studio, and we were talking off the air about agents and stuff, and he's like, well, you know, it'll get leaked. Agent leak. It's some, you know, and it's it's fine. I mean, who cares if you do that? But don't play both sides. I mean, we did it. We're trying to go here. Let's go. I mean or just shut up. You don't got leaked there's nothing you can do about it. It's out. There's nothing you're going to say that's gonna make any difference. So just you know. All right. I am. Sometimes you just gotta say I did what I did. I said what I said I'll deal with whatever you want to go come at me with stuff. Yeah. Dan, back at your buddy. Joining us. He does a show every day. Indie. Great analyst on ESPN. It's Waddell and Salvi in a commercial free four o'clock hour. So the main reason we wanted to have you on it is ion I'm beyond obsessed right now. Every time Duke is on campus. Tv Dan tweeter bulls fan, saying, Sylvia. No, you you're gonna get heartbroken. Again. You know, you're all in Zion. And the bulls are going to be any they're going to draft three. And then he's going to go somewhere else. What give me your summary? You're scouting report on John Williamson. The only interesting thing in college basketball right now is Williams. I mean, it's going to get different. There's great games is great teams. But he has swallowed everything up. So I actually sat that wrong. He's swallowed everything up and rightfully so. In my opinion. When you look at college basketball and guys coming out. He's the perfect guy. Unbelievable smile gong enthusiastic can really play like not just the dunker. Not just a it. Just can really play plays with enthusiasm has a chance as good as he's been in college basketball to trim it down a little bit like Barkley did to survive eighty two games, which is gonna only make more athletic. Only worry I have about him. Is you know, what some guys don't some guys some guys don't slim it down some guys don't get in the best shape? I think it's not going to be a problem for him. I think he's the best prospect running the floor jumping playing that. I've seen in college basketball. Maybe since Anthony Davis. She seems to be that kind of selfless. He scores along with the other kids J R R J Arnett fifty seven points against freakin Virginia. There are very good teams that can't score. Fifty seven points. If the bulls did Zion Williamson if you ever had a chance to go back to the air of Michael, Jordan. It'd be the rockstar team. That's your opportunity. That's how much I think. Zion. Williamson his potential as a player has potential as an endorser his potential as a guy because of his smile his way. He plays the enthusiasm that brings everybody in Chicago back towards the bulls. That's how big I think it is for the team that gets the stumper and and Jay Bilas has admitted he stumped by who's the comp who does he most remind you have passed NBA player. Well, you know, the the initial thing. I'm gonna tell you. I don't think it would. I saw Barkley in the nineteen Eighty-four Olympic trials sounds Barca. I know we all love, Michael, Jordan. Charles Barkley was the most dominant player there. Charles Barkley went into him with the basketball. Charles Barkley was not nearly as explosive design. William somebody could talk it with his chin. He was big he was happy. And that's the most normal thing. Here's something that is absolutely shocking. And then in my era of going back in the seventies sports Illustrated's did a big article on the enforcers in the NBA. You know what? I mean. I don't know if you remember that MAURICE Lucas, you know, all these guys MAURICE Lucas NBA enforcer was six eight to fifteen this guy. Six eight to eighty. It's just it's a freak of nature but can play like, you know, we've seen things, and you know, Dickie v or whoever goes nuts. Tractor trailer look up. Iggy is look how agile blah, blah, blah. No. This is totally different. Now. I would compare him a little bit like Rodman a little bit. Oh, hardy goes he'll run the floor. I would compare them a little bit like Barclay I-. That'd be about where I would be. I think he's got some Rodman. And I think he's got the crazy. I'm tread wear. Dress and kissed Ditto whatever they did. I'm talking about, you know, play hard rebounding making the right play being relentless. I'm telling you, you don't see it often. I call him shoe guys like guys that are so influenced by the shoe companies. We got one in Indiana name, Romeo Lankford. They don't play are. They don't play for team. Don't play for the other guy. There's not that. Right. This is a I mean, I'll give you an example Jabari Parker when he was at Duke. I ripped him worst offender I've ever seen for guys supposed to be a good player. Duke fans hated me. Probably Parker lose in the first rally NCWA tournament. Coach K. I see him. Do come there. One day with my wife. Then you're absolutely right. There was a sieve like I don't see any of that. Like, I I remember saying safari park one of the best high school players ever seen. Well, not being it'd be an NBA contract. You won't be an NBA player. And there's a big difference. This kid, I swear to God is an NBA player is going to be an NBA winter. I know what what what study was. He was you know, not transitional or not transformational. Right. That's all going to be deter. That's all going to be determined. Nobody knows. Yes. It's all going to be determined. If he becomes you know, what what Brian say called the Mamba or what Jordan did to improve his game and become an absolute killer. He has that in him. He's going to be as good as there's ever been in the league. He doesn't have that in them. Then he's going to be a really good player. But if he had nobody knows 'cause he hasn't been tested at this level. Nobody knew Jordan was going to be Jordan. Nobody knew nobody knew Kobe was gonna be Kobe and have the absolute I'll cut your throat out. Let me spit on your kind of thing if Williamson has that. I don't care whatever what any NBA guy says that dude is transformational was once in a lifetime. Danny segue to the gridiron briefly. The bears added Chuck Pagano as their defensive coordinator, your thoughts. I he was obviously the head coach for the colts down in Indy for several years. Great dude, never built a defense here. A lot of talk. Love them. Couldn't coach a lick in terms of clock management in terms of making players better. I guess was really good. When he had Ray Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. I I saw what he said about you on what we're not gonna change much. And that's a great sign for Chicago. Look I'm a bears fan grew up as a bears fan. I wanted to bears colts play and every Super Bowl because one of the all time best guys. But I swear to God coming in as a defensive mind. I have looked one guy thirty five year NFL defensive coordinator called their defensive scheme sophomoric and high school is almost on a weekly basis with me, but the bears have real talent on decent real talent. You know that better than anybody. And just don't my view. Don't screw it up. Survey was my man Chuck was congratulating the team after beating the Pittsburgh. Steelers in a preseason game where they played the three Bs a total of eight plays. And you made a big deal of grabbed me. And it was it was silly. But but the dude is a great guy and just don't screw it up because there's so much talent. There you lived through some difficult colts moments. Some of that was because Andrew luck was hurt. Whatever the reason do you think it was a bigger issue was a lack of talent with Gregg center. Do you think it was the coaching or maybe a combination of both? What was it a combination of both of the silver? Wha Tommy I I honestly and we saw this year with the colts. Nobody got better under Chuck. Nobody got better. Like, we used to say, okay? Like name me one player. That's better. So you can blame it on the citizens. You do whatever you want take that for what it's worth. But the only guy that anybody would ever mentioned was Jack Doyle tight end. There was nobody like an all of a sudden this year. You know, they brought in a couple of guys were really good. But guys that were left over got really good to on the corner. Got really good. Kenny more got really good Hooker. Got. I mean, guys that were left over all of a sudden, you're like man, these guys proof, and I hate to say it because the guy is a great dude anyone here when Andrew was healthy any errands. Bruce Arians was was great with him. But I'm just telling you. That's what that's what we all saw here..

"He's that guy. But anything he does. They don't miss things happen on the field with the rest. Just miss it. They're not looking. Oh, yeah. I mean, you've told stories about stuff that goes on in the scrums. And that I mean, it's inhumane, but anything he does anything in consumer does never gets missed. He is public enemy. I mean, look it's been earned. I mean, it's on. Sued that it's this way. True. I mean, but I mean, even if it's if it's even close what game was Detroit where he got flagged for a horse collar. I was standing right there. That's an if you call at best. But it was just how hard he slammed the guy three rests. Threw a flag anything he does on the field won't get missed. And then you've got Tom Brady saying that he plans to play next season at age forty one still planning on playing beyond. Yeah. Man. If I'm Tom Brady, and I've accomplished everything I've done I'm considered the goat quarterback. I think by now he's reached I think that consensus even above Montana pretty much if you get if you get beyond all the spy gate Joan, yes. Yeah. And the Deflategate. He's considered one of the greatest football players of all time, I'm eating strawberries, and I'm hanging out with Giselle. And I'm calling this a rat. Like the idea that I would feel compelled to get back out on that field again. And again. In an again in my forties. Man. You guys are just built different. Now. I think for me like watching Brett farve go through this. You know, your entire identity is tied up and being a quarterback. You don't even know who you are away from the field. So the last thing you would want to do is give that up. That's gotta be. That's gotta be one option. The other is he don't wanna go home. He doesn't want to be retired. He doesn't want to be the guy that takes out the trash walk the dog. He wants to go be has not being domestic. No he wants to go be the quarterback. And one thing. I heard MAURICE Lucas the basketball. Yeah. Yeah. We were talking about this. When he retired look when you can't play you can't play so play as long as you can. Because when it's over it's over you can't go back. So I if you can play until you're fifty do it do some of the stuff that he doesn't eat. You know, he's got this famously strict regimen of stuff that he doesn't eat gluten white sugar, white flour, strawberries. Mehta's like mushrooms. Yeah. The first Portobello that he has he's going to look like in thirty minutes like Chris rock in new Jackson. No doubt. This is going to be a gateway food is going to be a gateway drug for no doubt. I was lucky enough to be invited to a barbecue that Tony Gonzales had not too far from here. I think it was Manhattan beach and just in his kitchen. I was just looking around in the pantry. There was not a single box in there like nothing, no preservatives, nothing. It's all natural food. And I'm thinking like how much do you spend on food a month? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, but then you look at him. And you see how long he played. Well, you get it, man. I'm telling you once Tom Brady reintroduces himself to the good stuff that he has not been eating men. It's his mind's going to be blitz. Duct tape him to a chair and make them eat McDonald. That would be fun. That'd be cool. Yeah..

"Right. And I was going to just be like look at how crappy this whether is. But it was beautiful today. Andrew it was really nice. But look there was a sad piece of Washington DC related news this week with the passing of George H W Bush, and I'm sure that's why people have tuned into till hear us talk today for about an hour perspective. Let's into a big legacy talk. No. But actually I wanted to read one line from the New York Times obituary of George H W Bush because in George H W Bush's mother, Andrew I found a kindred spirit. Can you believe that? Here's what it said, Mr Bush once boasted to his mother that he had scored three goals in a soccer match. That's nice, George his mother replied, but how did the team do Andrew? I want you to think about that. When you're looking at these bucket, Gators your. Favorite's act leans of the world. I want you to really consider. How is the team doing? You know, I'll tell you what. And we'll talk more bowls later in the podcast. Zach LeVine is a rough watch. Really watch a full bulls game some of the decisions he makes a defense will leave you pretty puzzled because I watched bulls rockets to celebrate the return of my guy Lowry market in and I don't know as a stockholder in both Lowrey and Wendell parter junior. I'm not sure Levin is the guy to kind of tie it all together, Chicago. He's definitely not. We're sure he's not. I don't often get pot envy. 'cause I like to keep it very real. I like to keep it really real. Kevin arnovitz just destroyed. Zach LeVine on Zach Lowe's podcast. I can't recommend his rant about Levin enough. I came away from that discussion of Levin shortcomings as it relates the bulls future with serious pod envy. He's definitely not the guy injury. And maybe that's where we should start now. No, no, no. Oh, we have to start with your first day at the post wasn't out there. The most boring possible. Any like trust falls or group exercise? We didn't go that way. I did have to write up a little bio for the website. And they said, what's your favorite quotation? Can you guess what? I said my favorite quotation was. Is something about playing your Twitter. Bile is one of the most things about you. You already know that's a great post cool with that. They don't police that democracy dies dark as at if we have people up here looking over your shoulder editing, your Twitter bio where have we become as a society to answer my own question because you didn't even try you already know is my official guests and not that it's not something they'll playing with a purpose Lanjia, what's the greatest ability. The greatest ability is availability. And I decided that was my favorite day into your post career. I'm already discussed it with you. Also, we had to say what's one random thing on your desk? And I got to say Big, Ben Legos. So I'm making a great first impression. There you go. Dan, Steinberg any kind of initiation into the local sports misery that we deal with every day here. He showed off a record that he had from the Washington Bullets winning the NBA title. And there was some sort of a song that had been made to celebrate the nineteen seventies. Yes title. I believe all he's got the authentic record there. He's got it. And I think it could be a belated nomination into the best music basketball music conversation that we tried to have that eyesight trade with a whole bunch of NBA superstars discussion last week. Yeah. It looked pretty good. Okay. Yeah. My only thought on that a little dark, but one of the saddest parts of being wizards fan is that even that title is one of the lamest titles. The difference between the bullets fans in the blazers fans because people like Bill Simmons will say well, the weak part of the NBA had all these cheap titles. The Sonics it's in the blazers. But in Portland, they don't wanna hear that at all. They named everything after the nineteen seventy there's bars named after the seventy seven title Walton considered a patron Saint MAURICE Lucas, everyone names kids after Murray's Lucas. Yeah. So it can go one or two whereas like west on sell came to DC and stayed for fifty years short of like, Ernie Grunfeld before any Grunfeld, but I'm probably blaspheming and several different ways here..

"Five eight. We'll phone and wait you fucking score. And if not, you had to wait for the news that night or the news in the morning and. Even that that was the speed. So that night it happened in Milwaukee. What break the incident and the incident was they went back, can't Bentsen all American on Indiana. At the time. I even think he went to the Olympic team. I'm not sure check the fact on that can't can't. Manson was a white dude, tough dude, you know, but he went in and his opening night was against the lake is in Milwaukee. And there was some transaction that you really don't see, but it hurts Jabbar. He either threw a hand that I'm gonna head his kidney. I think it was an elbow like an elbow. He hit them. You don't really see it and all send your ball, went bent over, took a breath, got back, push them and just punched him in the fucking head. And I had almost die like I just died. But the year before what was going on the NBA was wild when the NBA merged with the that year was wild. And in the. Playoffs that year, the Portland Trail Blazers were playing the Sixers and en- game four or five. Darryl Dawkins who wrested sold nicest guy in the world and the doom blow with him years later, he would snug coke from on top of frigerator. That's how tall he was six foot. Eleven on the sequel is New Jersey, and he was just buck wild. He was the third guy to get I. It was Bill Willoughby. Then Moses Malone, then it was him to get drafted at that time straight from high school to college. Moses goes up for a rebounding Bobby growth. Bobby growth was half his size. You know, he just Thuc and manhandle took the ball from Bobby gross and threw him down to it, and they both got up and our dog just a wild dude from Florida out of Florida grew up without shoes and shit. They would wrestle alligators like a Bieb that would just as big and he had to other. Brothers that were bigger than him and all of a sudden they hold them back. This is in the final, this is the finals on national television fucking NBA. Finally. I was, I love the sixes, but I love Bill walk, right? And they had MAURICE Lucas MAURICE Lucas fucking guy. It was tough guy festival, and all of a sudden Donald Duck installs a punch at Bobby gross. But Doug Collins gets in the way and it hits his own fucking teammate. The poor, Doug Collins, Doug Collins goes down. Did you see this game on TV where you watching this? I bet the Sixers. I had the Sixers all the way I had this kid behind me that was a half a white psychic. His name was. Anthony DeMarco was something and he would talk very weird. He kept Tom of Sixers and six. So I bet all my money I was gonna guy. Yeah. He was like fucking Adam, medium. Dude. He gave me a couple of picks in baseball season we solid. So I went to the finals. And next thing you know, fucking MAURICE Lucas comes to mind bits Darryl Dawkins, their incentive court, gay fighting fighting member. Dockage is like these poor, Jack Ramsay, the coach, right? He was an old man. He was on the floor because Darryl Dawkins brothers came up from the audience and they were gonna throw it down. Oh shit. They showed it on the side and they come down Julius calm down. But then like I loved the wall. He was his white dude. He actually allay that was a hippie and he smoked dope. We forget how good he was. But let me tell you in game five or six. Didn't show how good he was. 'cause Julius Erving cillizza gonna lose to you, but I'm gonna slam dunk in your face so bad. That is fucking violent, grapefruit it on his fucking head, favorite dunk and why? I got mad at Bill Walton because because Bill Walton went for the offensive foul. If you watch that play in jump, he jumped, he jumped with them, but Julius jumped, Julia, had this. It was Julius had a scoop that he got away with all those years. If you watch old Julius footage Julius go at you, and then when you go back with him, he take off on you and that hand would scoop it always got away with that. Why aren't you like?.

"Call sports Colloton at eight hundred Justice, we're gonna be talking about a monumental task something that's going to go into the history books of basketball because we're going to say good morning to. Clarice? Good morning, Dan. Good morning sunny. How are you wonderful? Then you put together a special for ESPN is called basketball. A love story. Tell my radio listening audience what this ESPN special, and what it is. In terms of the history of basketball. Good morning. Philadelphia basketball. Love story is a twenty hour. Ten part film. We'll begin to be aired on ESPN October ninth every Tuesday night primetime. It's it's not the history of basketball sunny, it's it's a series of sixty two short stories one hundred and one hundred and sixty five interviews over two and a half years. And it's each story reflects something about either the NBA the ABA college basketball Olympics international game women's game issues of politics race, television business style fashion the art of the game and the intricacies of the game. And I call it a love story because these are short stories you open up a book and read short stories. I believe basketball has an obsessive component to it. To me obsession is a form of love. So each story reflects the complicated nature of love, the joy, the wonder escape the loss disappointment the portrayal through basketball, everyone from LeBron K D curry to Bob Cousy. Magic johnson. Tommy Heinsohn Bill Walton, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, sunny hill. Stop it. It's all good, Dan. Let's talk about a love story that you have with the game of basketball, and what has. Puts you in a position where you could dedicate. And I remember when you started this because I was one of the early interviews, and I didn't even realize about two years ago. But this is a as you say a two year journey and a love affair with the game of basketball, speak to how all this started with you going back. Well. I I I'm an old guy. This is my seventh film. I mean, my late sixties, I grew up in Brooklyn. And and basketball to me was the escape. You know, we lived in a one bedroom. How Potman Castro convertible couch from my parents me. And my brother shared up ahead. She didn't want to be in the apartment. So where were you were in the park nights? Sent you were no boys club PAL that basketball was everything to me. So so my entire life. I played and coach last year coaching this year, and I've written books about the game. I've been a graduate assistant. I've this is my third film about the game. I did black magic number of years ago, which you were. Beyond great in. I did a film calls winning time. Reggie Miller versus the New York. Knicks over the game is inside me. You know, like like like so many people. I don't think there was a day from the time. I was twelve to twenty six where I didn't play three hundred and fifty days a year. You know, you know, not never as good as I thought I was, but but that's the game is inside me. It's. It's like music is inside other people or or some obsession on the whole. It's maybe even a fairly healthy obsession. I I'm not sure let's talk about the twenty hours and the ten parts that's going to be and it's going to be on ESPN starting on October ninth. Give my radio listening audience, a snippet of some of the interviews that are going to be a part of it. And what those individuals had to say during that interview. Well, you know, there there I don't do it chronologically. So I don't begin with James Naismith because it's not a history is not right. And burns did on baseball. My third seen in the first night is PJ Carlesimo getting choked by literal spree that will get your attention right away. Go ahead. Right away. Hundred and two Sohn's over these twenty hours and it Stevie Wonder Jackson Five. The music and baby. Go ahead. Oh, yeah. Man. And and, but these these stories some of them are very intricate now for the Philadelphia listener, there is the story of wilt guess, not not merely wilt versus Russell. But my first interview in Naples, Florida about three and a half years ago was with Dr Jack Ramsay sat for four hours. His body was riddled with cancer. Yes. It couldn't even stand. And and his son set it up to me, and I knew that he was ill and he sat for four hours. And he spoke about those Philadelphia teams in the after he left Saint Joe's. He spoke about Saint Joe's at length. He described the two to one full court pressure, which I give credit to him and to a coach named Jerry Norman who was John wooden assistant for developing and both of those. Men, and including wooden then we often go to clinics coaching clinics around the country teaching that two to one pressure. Well, hasher obviously is not in the film, but that UCLA team sixty four 'cause Goodrich is in the film. So so we have people talking about Walt hazzard Philadelphia kid. The Magic Johnson of his day. You know? Yes. I and I'm saying, yes. Because they helped to raise what has it? So go ahead. And and and you would love this when I was trying to clear a song. It was a Ray Charles song. Just totally by accident. I had to make a call to a lawyer on the west coast. I call the guy he says to me I said you like basketball he says. Yeah, I do he says my father actually played in the NBA. I didn't put it together. His been was Jacoeb hazard. He's wolf has. Yes. The sun. Yep. That's right. Yep. What a delightful, man. So Billy Cunningham talking about that championship team. Moses Malone four four four. What a shame, of course, Charles Barkley, Dr J. I have a full story full seen twenty two minutes on that nineteen seventy seven playoff between Philadelphia and Portland. Of course, Philly winning the first two games. George mcginnis is in Doug Collins is in it. And we go into of course, that that game two brawl with although Calvin Murphy describes that fight between movies endorphins as a soul train. No one really wanted to hit. But it was dot college. It took the eight stitches because talk and sent him by mistake. So let me let me just stop you right there because you had a couple of people who responded since I was at that event. I was doing that game on CBS. And I'm sitting right on the court. Okay. And when that situation broke out between MAURICE Lucas and Darryl Dawkins. Yeah. I was the person that interceded because I raise MAURICE Lucas was from Pittsburgh Shanley high school came to Philadelphia to play on the Sonny hill league. And he became a real supporter of my philosophy about how to use basketball. So I knew him personally, Darryl Dawkins had joined the sixth that tat taken him under wing. I actually stopped the fight now Calvin Murphy who's the toughest guys Evanston BA. I can tell you. This is a fact. Yeah. Maurice Lucas knocked Artis Gilmore out hundred percent. Correct. Okay. So MAURICE Lucas is regarded as one of the top five toughest guys ever any. I'm not talking about wolf wolf I'm talking about. Bam. Yeah. Actually, save Darryl Dawkins from being in a situation where he could have been hurt real bad. And then d'oro went into the bathroom managed, the clubhouse and talk all of the bathroom stuff out. He was so mad. Go ahead. And it's all in the movie in the move. In fact, we have footage of Zorkin's is relatives running out on the court during that fight, right? And and put the big issue there. The big issue. That's in the film pointed out is is what is the truth. What is the relevant? What is actually accurate in terms of? Because there are people that say that talking's was very upset that quote, his teammates did not support him enough during that role, and there's footage of Dr J the great Dr J sitting on the floor when the fight is happening. Which is true. He was in the ABA. He saw lorries Lucas knockout Artis Gilmore? Deal. More in the film. Talking about getting knocked out by MAURICE loop. No, you don't you? Don't have do you one million? Guess what? How did I know that you were going to do that? And I'm telling my listening audience is real story. Yeah. That's right. That's one hundred percent, right. And and Gilmour says that he he really got he got it. He got knocked down walked into that shot someone else that says I forget who they say that that that that was the that was the blow that cemented MAURICE Lucas reputation. No one wanted any part of that's true. But I'll tell you on Calvin Murphy on Calvin Murphy. Now, what you do is, Dan because I need commercial break. I'm gonna bring you back on the other side. We're going to talk about what Calvin Murphy, and we're gonna talk about some of the other things. That's this. Great movie is called basketball, a love story, and Dan Clarice who was the guy that put all this together is with us in the living room. So stay.
