The mu variant of the coronavirus has the attention of scientists right now in public health officials, they're concerned it might be able to bypass existing covid antibodies, even those created by vaccines. Hillary and Dmitry talked about it with CBS News Medical contributor Dr David The Celtic group pretty rapidly. So when we saw 1% of cases very soon as 30% and then up to 90% Mu has been around and was originally isolated in Colombia in January of 2021, it's the fifth area of concern. It's in 39 countries now 2000 cases in the United States, mainly California, Florida, Texas in New York, But it is not spreading rapidly at the present time. What is it about this particular strain of virus that has health officials kind of waiting to see? What happens with it? I think it's just new, and there's not a lot of data around it. And so what we obviously need is data on breakthrough cases, so people have been vaccinated. Are they getting sick? And are they getting seriously ill and we have no data at the present time that it can evade the vaccine. There was some laboratory data that was talked about in the media with some antibodies not binding well, but that's very, very cursory data. And much of the response to the virus is T self, so I wouldn't take that to heart. I think right now we're okay with you. And it's something of concern that we're paying attention to. How worried are you about the new reports about all these kids getting covid now? Well, that's really concerning is that 22% of the case is now in the United States or Children and obviously, Children. Most of them are not vaccinated, especially the younger ones, and they can spread it to others as they're in school now, and what we don't want is obviously serious complications in these Children. Great to have you back. Mark. Thank you so much. Thank you, Sean and Hillary definitely much lower number than we have seen a recent weeks. What do you make of it? It is slow healing about not healed. We see some 21 million Americans still on some form of unemployment benefit. The October unemployment report told us there were 11 million jobless Americans and others who have left the labor force. So that unemployment rate nationally basically twice where it was before the pandemic began. So yeah, progress but not at the destination. And mark. We have a surging of this pandemic, which presumably will lead some businesses, perhaps to have to cut back as restrictions or tightened. What does the future look like? Well, no doubt. We're already thinks of indications that localities are either restricting or, in some cases, putting very severe restrictions down Esso. Whether it's something that the government is telling people to do or whether it's consumers basically restricting themselves. There's a cost of the economy there. On the other hand, we know that we're getting a lot of positive indications about the progress on vaccines. So we know that the day will come where we will be able to take advantage of the availability of those medical solutions. But it's still going to be quite some time and we're gonna be in for unfortunately, some further challenging days here during the autumn and winter. Now, here we go. We're post election and perhaps there might be some more talks here in the future about pandemic relief things that have been delayed here for months. What could we see in the months ahead about that If we don't get more pandemic, really From the next to you. Well right now, I don't think that there's really a new area of agreement to be found based on what we're hearing from Capitol Hill between the Senate majority leader McConnell and leadership in the House of simply because the House wants to do much more than what the Senate's willing to do, and it felt like McConnell was more willing to strike. Spirit of compromise before the election. Perhaps he's been emboldened by the fact that the Senate did not basically see the setback with respect to Republican control that many were predicting not unlike some other aspects of the campaign reality or the election reality, So right now, I think the economy is still going to be on its own. Except for aspects of earlier passed legislation, which either provided some support early or in some cases, it is persisting through, for example, extended unemployment benefits. All righty.
