Were unusually quiet in the month of june. But some traders think that's about to change markets editor. Quinton web joins me from hong kong to explain. Why high quinn. High them. Quinton looking at history. What typically happens during the summer months. What happens with volatility right. So i mean we're coming out of the kind of very placid stretch in some ways. So if you look at june intraday highs and lows in the s&p five hundred very close together. It's been actually quite kind of calm. Market but history. If it's any guide suggests that things are likely to get a little bit choppier in the months ahead and one big reason for that basically is because a lot of people tend to be on holiday. You know so. There are a few traders and investors at their desks. And so the moves that you do see in markets can tend to be amplified a bit more and that's basically because there isn't quite as much money sloshing around the system if you like. There's not as much kind of buying and selling stocks so when the market is less liquid you tend to see a slight pickup in volatility. So the ingredients for volatility are there but is some are even a strong season for traders and for the markets. Well good questions so you know if you look historically july. That tends to be a sort of reason we good month. The markets so some p. Five hundred has risen more than half the time tends to gain. You know one point. Six percent on average through that month but then august is notoriously typically a week month the stock market so all in the next couple of months not great. You know if we're looking at history as a guide. Summer is here clinton webb. Thank you as always. Thanks very much just ahead. The banking community is divided.

"Backslash. Wsj today this coming monday. Jeff bezos will step down as chief executive of amazon basin. Famously started the company by selling used books from his garage. The business expanded rapidly by courting third party sellers on its platform. Here's basil's in one thousand nine hundred nine pitching. What was then still a new concept. Most of the people who are out there that have businesses and they're selling a selection of items or maybe they're micro manufacturers. Whatever they they don't want to be in the internet business they wanna be in whatever business they're in. This is a turnkey solution for them. More than twenty years later amazon has grown to become one of the biggest companies in the world with a market capitalization of more than one point seven trillion dollars. But of course under basil's his leadership amazon has become much more than just an online marketplace that delivers packages with a signature. Smile on the box. It also has a streaming service a grocery arm into lucrative cloud computing unit and its faced criticism for its size and influence its environmental impact and the way it treats its workers so what will post as amazon look like joining us to discuss is our amazon reporter. Dana mattioli hi dana. Hi so dana. Can you just sum up amazon's growth under bazo says it. Ceo how did it go from being dream in a garage to a nearly multi trillion dollar company. Yeah i mean the only way that described the growth of amazon under. Jeff bezos has been astronomical. He went from the germ of an idea that sounded crazy at the time in nineteen ninety-four of shopping on the internet when most people didn't have internet or computers. No one wanted to put their credit card into wine. He took that in the parlayed. That into this massive empire. That's now one of the biggest companies in the world. And how much impact has jeff bezos had. On the day to day running of amazon. You know i think over the twenty five plus years that he's run it he's had outsize influence But the last few years he's really taking a step back and he's acted as this like floating. Ceo that dived into projects that sort of interest him and he doesn't really get involved in the day to day so we don't really anticipate much to really change as he takes on this chairman role since he's sort of an acting that way for the last few years as it is but some of those decisions and policies that were put in place under..

"Now trending on the KFBK Morning News with Christina and Dancer and Sam Shane this morning. CNN reporting the U. S government has been investigating a report of a leak at a Chinese nuclear power plant. French company that owns part of that plan is reportedly warned of an imminent threat from a leak radioactive material this morning. The by administration reportedly does not consider that lead could be a serious threat. Big tech companies have been under increasing scrutiny from lawmakers and the courts. Amazon and Apple are under antitrust investigation, while Facebook and Google are already fighting antitrust lawsuit. Dana Mattioli works for the Wall Street Journal and says there are five bills under consideration. They come on the heels of a nearly two year investigation into Big tech. And the investigation looked at Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google and the learnings of that investigation, You know, inform these bills, and some of them could be pretty earth shattering for these companies. One bill that would impact Amazon, the most would stop the company from selling items and then competing against those items with their own private label goods. Think of like the echo. Okay. Okay, So all of the bills are moving forward now that congressional reviews are complete. So in 2019, the congressional antitrust subcommittee launched an investigation of these four tech companies. And over a series of hearings and background conversations and off the record conversations. They came to a conclusion that each of the four companies that they looked into had some aspect of monopoly power. In October. They put out a 400 page report detailing that and you know, when you look at the legislation coming out today, that is largely based on the findings of that report. So all of these bills were introduced on Friday, and they'll be discussed throughout this this coming week here. And support for the bills are bipartisan. But lobbyists are now activated. Oh, you mean the lobbyists paid for by Google and Amazon? All of them have have, you know armies of these lobbyists. In fact, Facebook Is more for lobbyists than any country in the country right now, Right? Any company in the country so this may soften the teeth of many of these bills. These four companies, in particular have massive massive armies of lobbyists. They spend more than almost any other company in the US on their lobbying power, So you have to believe that behind the scenes they are starting to get in touch with, you know the lawmakers and you know, really engaging their lobbyists and other trade group. So this might be a time if you have feelings either way to to reach out to your representative because they're going to be discussing these bills upcoming there, five of them and they don't mention any of the companies by name. But the parameters for the legislation are so narrow that these are the only four companies that would follow within those parameters. Well, you know, from just from what you described right now we can sit back and say Okay, this is a good first step. Yes, Um, but we had a long way to go. It's going to be a long way. Let's not be naive. We we know that. You know, big text going to just they're going to throw so much money at this fight, and it's going to be a nasty one. And this is the beginning. But I mean, look, I don't do We need a report for us to to understand that that these guys are all their monopolies. I mean, there they have a stranglehold, so the glimmer of hope in all of this is that the bills are bipartisan, so there seems to be appetite on both sides to do something. So whether you know or not, the lobbyists can soften the teeth of these bills that remains to be seen. But But there is an appetite at least that something needs to be done better late than never. 5 20 is the time out to the roads we go. Let's check in with.

"Google facebook are already fighting. Antitrust lawsuits amazon. An apple are under antitrust investigation. Today a bipartisan group of house. Lawmakers who've put forward bills aimed at reining in the power of big tech while the bills don't specifically named the company's only these for the parameters the legislation includes a bill the ending platform monopolies act. That would make amazon and other large companies effectively split into two or shed their private label products joining me now with more about the bills and what they could mean for. Big tech is wall street journal. Amazon reporter dana mattioli. Hi dana thanks so much for being here anytime so dana documents and talk to people ahead of their release of this legislation today. What can you tell us. What have you learned about the various bills here. There are five bills that are being released today and they come on the heels of a nearly two year investigation into big tack and the investigation looked at amazon apple facebook and google and the learnings of that investigation inform these bells and some of them could be pretty earth shattering for these companies. So two of the bills in particular could be pretty detrimental. Amazon one of them would mandate structural separation of the company and in essence. That means amazon. Couldn't run this massive online marketplace with hundreds of thousands of sellers and compete against those sellers with their own lines of private labels goods and devices like the echo. So they'd have to figure out if they'd wanna spend that off if they'd want to maybe just stopped making those types of products. Should this be passed. And there's another one that gets into non-discrimination on platforms where it really aims to stop self preferencing from companies that own and operate their own platforms. So tell us more about congressional reviews of big tech. How do these efforts now fit into that broader picture. We're looking at yes. Oh in two thousand. Nineteen the congressional antitrust subcommittee launched an investigation of these four tech companies and over a series of hearings and background conversations and off the record conversations. They came to a conclusion that each of the four companies that they looked into had some aspect of monopoly power and then october they put out a four hundred page report detailing that and nobody you look at the legislation coming out today that is largely based on the findings of that report. What kind of signal does this send to big tech companies. Will you look at these bills. They're very narrowly focused on big tech and these four companies so there are definitions set forth in the bills as to who they might affect. So you have to be accompanied with a larger than six hundred billion dollar market cap. There's really only a handful of companies with that qualification. You have five hundred thousand monthly users again. Only some companies had that qualification and there are other definitions as well so this is pretty narrowly focused on the big tech companies. And i think it sends a signal that the status quo isn't working anymore and that they'll be further changes to anti-trust review. Is there any kind of precedent for action like this. From congress years ago there was the glass steagle act and that's separated commercial and investment banking and it's a little bit similar to what the structural separation bill. That's targeting amazon Looks at amazon. Can't run this massive marketplace where you have third party sellers selling on it and then also creating their own line of private label products that compete directly against them. So that's the probably the closest comp that we have on this so dina. These efforts have bipartisan support. But what is the likelihood of them passing both the house and the senate. It's tough to say at this point in time. What we do know is that both republicans and democrats signed onto each of the bills and antitrust and big tech seemed to be the one area that both republicans and the democrats agree on. You know it's obviously very fractured between the two sides. But when you really dig into the details of the business practices of these companies. There is a lot of agreement across the aisle so far the four companies haven't commented on the proposed legislation all four have defended their competitive practices in the past and said that they operate their products and services to benefit customers dana. How do you think they will respond. Going forward the little too soon to say right now but you have to keep in mind that these four companies in particular have massive massive armies of lobbyists. They spend more than almost any other company in the us on their lobbying power so you have to believe that behind the scenes they are starting to get in touch with the the lawmakers and you know really engaging their lobbyists and other trade groups that's wall street journal. Amazon reporter dana mattioli dana. Thanks so much for your time today. Thanks for having me and finally one of the upsides of the pandemic was that cities were quieter but as the country reopened the noises are back and they can be annoying but more than that. "Com Jeff Wagner on WTMJ. Well, here's an example of the cancel culture trying to take somebody out, and it doesn't quite work. Working. Wallen and Morgan Wallace is three young country singer who's also kind of Ah, kind of a jerk and Morgan Wall and head his his career kind of blow up. You will remember Ah, while back because it was one of those nights where he and a bunch of his buddies are coming back from a night of partying and drinking. And the neighbor has ah, that the neighbor he lives in Nashville and neighbor has one of those cameras that South and it catches Wallenda's. He's kind of stumbling into his house and he's you know, waving at some of the people who's dropping off and he said, Take good care of and he's referring to somebody and he uses the n word I completely and totally inappropriate but in in the context of it. He's just being a drunken jerk. It's not like he's. It's not like he's singling this out and saying, I hate all you'll fill in the blank. It's just he uses the term. It's a slur. He should not do it, and he's apologized for it. But what happened is after that video surfaced is career essentially came to Ah, halt. The Country Music Association removed his digital content from their platforms, the Academy of Country Music Awards, said. He's not going to be eligible for this award. His record label dropped him and what happened is interestingly enough, The sales of his records went through the roof, and it's just it's been one of these amazing phenomena. His people decided they're voting with their pocketbooks, and they're kind of responding to the efforts of the cancel culture. What? Well, here's the deal. The 2021 Billboard Music Awards, which he is not eligible for since he was banned from attending or performing the Sunday show. Apparently he had won three awards. From six nominations, because apparently the way they calculate these awards. It's a it's a factor that they look at performance on the billboard and charts. They're not voted on. But depending on how well you do that decides who the winners are, so even though he was said he's not eligible, he actual and it wasn't invited, participate. Because the fans decided that they weren't going to cancel him. He ended up winning three out of the six awards. Now he's not going to get him. That's my understanding, because again he's not eligible. But based on the numbers, he won three out of six The cancel culture gets left in the dust on this particular issue. 1 31 Let's go to the WTMJ breaking news Center. Here's Melissa Bar. Thank you. China's Coronavirus Is Spreading. But How?

"Deadly new virus has cropped up in China the dramatic surge in cases of a deadly mystery virus. It's something called a corona virus. The pneumonia like illness originated in central. Insult China there are actually many types of corona viruses. This one causes fever dry. Cough difficulty breathing. Diarrhea and body aches the the number of infected exploded over the weekend. Hundreds of people have been infected Chinese officials taking every precaution to contain the virus and as of Thursday afternoon. We're recording this workers outside of the local hospital in bio suits. Seventeen people have died or good afternoon governor. Jay inslee governor of the state of Washington on top up of all of that. We're here to give a brief into the public regarding the novel. rotavirus on Tuesday officials announced. It's shown up here in the United States. Patient is a man in his thirties. He is in the hospital here behind me and then later in the week. Chinese authorities closed off the city of Wuhan at the center of the outbreak. Nick wants eleven. Million people are being told they can't leave and more. Chinese cities have followed suit. Such a massive operation to restrict people moving on spreading. The disease is unprecedented. So this episode. We'll tell you what officials are saying about the origins of the virus and what we know about the likelihood that it will continue to spread Brett. I'm Mattioli and you're listening to shortwave the daily science podcast from NPR. So we're talking corona virus and here to help us do that is NPR. Reporter Jason Bogin who covers global health and development. Hey Jason Hey Mattia so this thing cropped up about a month ago and this past week China announced more cases and the number of countries where it's been found outside of China continues to grow. Oh and one big thing. We haven't mentioned yet. Is that this weekend. Is the busiest holiday travel season in China. One of the largest travel seasons in the world. Yeah it's like doc Thanksgiving and fourth of July all combined into one. Hundreds of millions of people typically travel for the Lunar New Year which is January twenty fifth man. Ah brings up something about virus. Does it spread easily amongst people who are on trains. We don't exactly know the Chinese government has said it appears to be respiratory Tori. But they haven't been able to confirm that that is exactly the route of transmission at the moment and how communicable is how likely it is if people are sitting next next which other on buses and planes and trains that it could spread right. Okay so let's back up and explain what we do know. Starting with where it started the city city of Wuhan in central China yet so all indications are pointing to this wholesale meat market in Wuhan. It's a place where they have live. Animals that are slaughtered. There's also fish that are sold there as well as meet and the idea is that the corona virus and seems to be what have hap has happened jumped from one of fold animals in the market over to humans. And at this point we don't know exactly what animal that is. We don't as one of the big questions that still out there. If you remember SARS that big outbreak started in two thousand two was really big in two thousand and three. It's called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome now is also corona virus. Chris and it spread all over the world. Almost eight hundred people were killed before eventually stamped out and health officials in China say that this current virus doesn't look his deadliest that but it's still really serious for SARS. It was these palm. Civic cats that were being sold in AL markets in China and once that was identified identified then the Chinese government banned the sale of civic cats. That's Matthew Freeman urologist at the University of Maryland. School of Medicine Right. Okay so I wanNA talk a little bit about how a virus like this can jump from animal to human because it's not often explained super clearly. Yeah so a key. Part of that jump is when a virus mutates and and when people talk about mutations and viruses. What they're talking about is something that actually happens? Naturally when a virus replicates right so viruses loved to make lots of little copies of themselves elves and when they do they can make little mistakes during that and knows can change who or what the virus can infect. That's right and Matthew Freeman that Corologis. He thinks that SARS actually started out in bats and it mutated jumped over two those civic cats and then eventually got into people all and here's how he described it as these viruses replicate in these in bats day mutate a bit and if the wrong bat and the wrong other animal become in contact potentially usually when they're caught in the wild whether they're brought onto farms than it can jump into that species and often times. What we found is that the virus needs a little bit more mutational events to happen where can replicate in this intermediate animal before it can jump into people so in the case of SARS it started in bats takes a little bit jumps into cats mutates more jumps into humans right and there are other types of corona viruses that exist in birds in rodents are in camels. But in this case it's proving difficult to figure out what the exact animal source is this corona virus right which brings us back to that market in and Wuhan where they think it all started yet. We spoke to this Guy Kevin Olive oil. WHO's the VP research at the public health? Nonprofit it's called ECO health alliance as been to a lot of markets like this one in in Southeast Asia and he said they can have a wide variety of animals some of them while domestic and it creates a kind of melting pot. Where it's possible for these viruses to jump between species when the animals are alive in the market? They're stressed out. There's a lot of contact with feces and saliva and in terms of butchering the animals. With blood you know. It's pretty chaotic. It's not ed clean as you would think and There's a lot of contact with animals and animal fluids and body parts and so you can imagine in that Type of environment. Yeah it's really hard to zero in on one particular animal as a source You know in this instance. There's some question about how careful the Chinese government has been among in dealing with this way. Once they found out that there was this big problem they went in and cleaned everything. Up in some of the researchers are a little bit Upset set that a lot of potentially useful evidence got destroyed in this effort to just clean up this market right. They kind of reacted quickly and now makes it harder to trace that. Yes now the scientist just because they did that clean up. The sizes are playing catch up there sampling animals and other markets. Trying to see if they have the virus and in the meantime there could potentially still be animals most spreading this type of virus in other markets in China right and then of course beyond that they're saying it's now spreading not just from animals to humans but from one human human to another. Do we have any other clues about that. Human to human spread. That's happening. This is one of the big questions that still out there. What is the human to human spread doesn't have have to be really close? Contact is spreading through the air. We talk to this epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and tropical medicine. David Heymann. He says one clue is that there seems to be many clusters of infected people who all belong to the same family and they've had intense contact with an infected person it. It doesn't seem that the current virus spreads very easily face to face with a cough or a sneeze but even said we still don't know what sheriff the infections happen through. These family. Clusters this case in Washington state. That patient says he didn't visit any of these markets. He doesn't recall coming into contact with anyone who was was sick rain and also brings up another thing. That's kind of concerning which is that at least fifteen. Healthcare workers in the city of Wuhan a reportedly among people who've been inspected and that's always an evil omen within emerging infection because health workers. See a disease may think it's a common pneumonia. They're not as careful. They should be in washing their hands or in patient care and as a result they then get infected and then it spreads within the hospital or can spread to their families and then into the community so so hell in the concern. Is that those workers who may not know that they're actually infected with the virus and feel healthy actually are this phenomenon known as super spreaders people who end up actually infecting a lot of other people. And we've seen this in the SARS outbreak there. There were some super spreaders. There are some key people who ended up spreading the virus to a lot of other people and in that really contributed to the spread of SARS globally. So the question is are there super spreaders with this virus. We don't really know that yet. Gotcha and in the meantime when the CDC announced it confirmed that there's that American patient it also so announced screening at certain airports here in the states right and as we talked about airports We should mention screenings were implemented during the SARS outbreak. They didn't have much of an impact on containing SARS that said the. CDC screening is happening now at airports in La San Francisco New York Atlanta Atlanta Chicago and basically passengers off a plane with a fever or they seem to have cold like symptoms. They're going to be taken aside for health screening testing now You know even the best case that's GonNa take our Z.. Samples getting sent back to the CDC in Atlanta. So if you're flying for me you're going to be routed into one of these airports where they're are able to check you and see if you're showing signs of having this disease. Gotcha okay so Jason. Yeah this is obviously getting a lot of attention get right now now what our public health officials and journalists like yourself the most worried about look the the worst case scenario is an airborne flu that spreads rapidly around the world has maybe a long incubation period. gets out there and then kills lots of people. Yeah that's not really what we're seeing at the moment went But it is still concerning because you are getting spread that we don't know exactly how it's happening so that's what's most concerning installment that we don't know how it's spreading and we don't no the underlying number of people who've been infected or how long that incubation period which could mean we've got a whole slew of them coming down the fire shirt okay Jason Boban update you're welcome will link to NPR's reporting on corona virus in the notes of this episode which was produced by Brett. bachman edited by Andrea Andrea.
