"matthew wine" Discussed on Cut To Black: A Sopranos Sitdown

"The minute i met tony i knew who that guy was on my second date he brought me and my mother each a dozen roses and my father a two hundred dollar power drill not the typical story of young love and i don't know if i loved him in spite of it or because welcome my friends to soprano cut to black soprano seatown. Oh my goodness my name. Is jim scam paulie. I've seen every episode of the sopranos. My name's jacob burroughs and i've seen sixty eight episodes of the sopranos at sixty eight hours of your life. You're never gonna get back jacob because he spent watching amazing show and then another sixty eight hours or so discussing it what good choices we make in life much like tony soprano or should i say kevin finnerty. Oh my god he's back. Yes oh sorry who made this though this one was written by matthew wine or the creator of madman also directed by jack bender originally aired march twenty six ext two thousand and six. I believe i looked up. Let me see jack bender. I don't know if he directed any other episode. Of course he did yeah. He directed the episodes in season three and season four and last last week. We talked about how we had a game of thrones director. This fellow also directed a couple episodes game the thrones notably the door memorable and sewed and blood of my blood episodes five and six of season six or whatever hey t._v. People they all look alike to me. They'll direct fantastic shows and make amazing things and just talk about them. Never make anything here. We are season six while he makes magic jake with door in this episode as well so i think it was all a setup for that game of thrones so you go now before we get into it. I asked you last week if we'd seen the last of kevin finnerty and as you are now aware we had not seen the last of kevin finnerty yet which is kind of like infinity right kevin finnerty in don't even try so now what are your thoughts of seeing more of kevin finnerty even though it's it's definitely scaled back from in comparison to the previous episode i mean my first reaction was jeez more with this shit and maybe maybe it's because of the way they cut it where it's like. Carmela comes in and sits there sits down and then it's like slow and then it cuts and then like we're going to do this more <hes>. It's going to be more of this a lot more. Maybe as it wasn't excited about it because i like it made sense like looking back on the episode. It makes total sense to me what they did especially the bay where he liked transitions out into the real world again that was really nice but then like having him go to the buddhists and and and all this stuff. I was not excited for it. It started feeling more like a dream sequence for the sake of it but again made perfect sense in the context context the episode still yes yeah i mean there is a lot in this episode. Yeah especially with the monks of you know. You need to take responsibility. You need to face the consequences. I mean they do have a comment of like you know when he's saying i'm not kevin finnerty in there like you know. Who's that tree. You know. We're not anyone in the grand scheme of things. Are we but i still. I still really love it. I love all the kevin finnerty stuff. It is the thing that talking about like some of the phantom. I've been bringing that up here and there i have seen a lot of people say that they i always skip the kevin finnerty stuff and they can't stand it or whatever but i love it. I think it's great last week. I loved it and now mike cool. Where's the mob stuff so i guess i'm transitioning into while we do get a shitload of mob sheep darts off immediately with mob stuff. I kind of feel like absolutely not sorry to cut job. That's why i was like cool. We're back in back to mob stuff. I think i was like the ricochet back into kevin furniture because last time it was like we start with kevin and we're going through it and then it's this and this mob stuff and it scheming and i like all that stuff but like the jumping back and forth or like oh now i have to care about this metaphor and this conversation that has no relevance to the real world only to like his psyche and everything and again. It was was actually all fine but i i did have a knee jerk reaction that have like all right kevin. We're still now this now. What about this quote from david chase where he says that <hes> frankly frankly. I would not call those dreams now. Do you is like as far as sopranos in like the spiritual side of sopranos it does this show kind of take a stance that there is like a purgatory and heaven and hell like what's your read on that you could though i think last episode i'll something similar i mean last cut the black i said something like in these dreams i dunno in this coma state like is it. Although i was more along the lines of it's not really the dream because he's not asleep like he's you know i would agree with that and i think the show is kind of doing it. I think it's in his head but it has like the real life is affecting what's happening in their two degree where i feel like it has more meaning than <hes> just any old dream. Do you think david chase's saying yes. This is definitely the space between heaven and hell or do you think he's just being david chase. <hes> i mean he might not be confirming purgatory but i do think at least in the realm of this show that yeah i think spiritually originally tony soprano is somewhere and <hes> at least i got. I don't know if he's in his real life. He thinks that there's heaven hell and purgatory but i think in the a show that this is more than just a dream. It's interesting because obviously the show deals a lot with death <hes> <hes> but most of it is more along the lines of you know like when paulie walnuts went to the psychic and the psychic knows stuff that he shouldn't know or whatever and you can kind of explain it away. The show wants to give you this sense of like you know maybe like so this is like an extended version of that in a way when he keeps seeing gloria and all its left open to interpretation which i i also also appreciate and i feel like david chase. We'll just say whatever is almost the most controversial or annoying anyone trying to interpret his work anyway. This is <hes> <hes> but yeah i mean in my mind the way i view the world and this shell it's just a dream but it's a different type of dream. Because it's a coma dream uh-huh that's the only extra layer in my mind and that it's like yeah of course because he's raised catholic so but i i do think at least from the stance of the show i feel like i feel like in the in the world of the sopranos which is obviously you know grounded and very much like our own world except you know you murder people in in broad daylight and beat them up and nothing happens to you but i feel like this show has a stance that hell exists in tony's going there and that may disagree agree well yeah at least when he's on the cusp shoe disagree and i feel like this is the universe potentially really giving tony soprano another chance and could he learn from this and maybe will he make changes in his life from here but i mean right that's yet to be seen going back to what i adventure in last week that this was inspired by john patterson <hes> <hes> who was in one of the main directors he directed all the finales of the sopranos before season six inbetween season five seasons sixty did pass away <hes> <hes> and i guess it's kinda tight end when he talks about i frankly would not call those dreams inspiring many theories about tony potentially actually moving through purgatory or some other section of the afterlife <hes> asks now about those episodes chase says alternate universes now. I have no proof that's what i consider them as an artist something spiritual what's happening with kevin finnerty. It wasn't the same as in the test dream the sequence inspired by chases longtime friend john patterson who directed many episodes of the series before dying of cancer in two thousand and five and at one point is cancer fight patterson found himself in the hospital little muttering the same words who am i. Where am i going <hes> chase would then put them out. <hes> put that into the mouth of both tony <hes> and kevin finnerty in the alternate tune it reality the way my mind work mind worked shay says i wondered what he was seeing when he said that that line between dream and reality and death and sleep and all latte. I'm into that whole thing so but you're right. I do feel like he does kind of like to stoke. The fires and i mean stoke the discussion. I know we've mentioned before that. He probably hates the discussion but i think deep down inside. He loves the we're discussing broncos. Yeah i think it might also be. I don't know if it's like a different different setting in your brain where i maybe it's my world view or something that lets me not be that interested in dream sequences 'cause i like. That's some bullshit that it's and the similar if it's like unclear whether it's having her hell again i oh i did like the last episode a lot and i was trying to put my finger on it. As we were discussing it. It reminds me of like barton. Fink coen brothers in general enron but maybe specifically like being trapped in a weird hotel and like you're a different person and pardon feelings in general but the real question we have to ask yourselves. Jim are recalling this perga- theory every that he's in purgatory or recalling it perga- tony because it's his own personal personal purgatory question. I think you could say either one honestly so i'm like i'm like in perga- tony myself because it sounds like rigi. Get tony like food. Sorry everyone hashtag in your responses here hashtag perga- theory perga- tony and rigatoni at <hes> this shows what you know on twitter. That's the letter you. I was trying to find because i like what you're bringing up about like disliking dream sequences in chase kind of talks about that a bit like just like dream sequences are fools who have no bearing on this reality or the next okay yeah here. It is he. This is is from david chase when they're talking about because even allen seven wall at at ask them like there's definitely a segment of the audience who just wants a mob show show they wanna whacking the week an asshole du jour anytime you steer too far away from that. They said this is not okay. There's now we signed up for <hes> even though the very first scene of the shows in a psychiatric office now are psychiatrist's office now. I think that's a little bit too dismissive because i mean it still is a mop show and i get there is like an audience for for that but what david says you know what it must be about the audience resistance dreams and stuff like that it's like you're presenting me a fictional world and i buy into the fictional world old i know it's not real and now you're telling me that there's a world beyond that so if i buy into that fictional world <hes> now you're telling me to go to some other level then it means what's gone before is not real and i want to think what's gone before israel so video because he's like otherwise. What am i watching this for. I've got to believe it. I think that's fair. I mean he's just kinda saying yeah like because we're already buying into tony soprano and now we have to be like well what about tony's dreams and hopes and then what about if tony is someone else and yeah. We're going inception layers. He's here deeper and deeper into the mind of some of these already fake while david chase is jade is because i've never been able to put my finger on that and i think it does it exactly why don't love a dream sequence where i'm like. You already sold me on this. I'm in it's. I'm believing in it and then you like even in my real life. If i wake up from a dream that's particularly intense and it lingers in my mind i'm like why am i feeling this way. I don't understand it and a- and then you just shove it from your mind and then it's like oh. No i need therapy what you need to explore your.

"On hundreds of devices, like Alexa, Google home XBox and sano LA, and I heart radio station. Welcome back to an Tampa Bay Jack will be back on Monday. Some special guests in studio right now we are in for a treat. Because we love having the Patel conservatory in here today, we have some music instructors, we have Tim wilt, and we have Matthew wine Euler. Thank you for joining us today. Both of you. So this is going to be great. You guys first of all, you have a youth opera camp. Coming up. It starts here, June seventeenth. So actually just a couple of days away from that. Tell us a little bit about the camp here this summer. All right. So the Patel opera camp is a brand new thing that we're starting this year Patel. And I'm very excited to be leading that up. We have a full week, a day camp nine to four of our students who are going to be learning about opera performance practice how to sing like to opera singer, and they're actually going to be premiering, a new work called falling skies. That's written just for students that they're going to be performing at the end of the week. You're an opera singer. Right. I am has your voice feeling today. On note, or something. The opera singers, how you guys get to that next level. I don't wanna put you on the spot here because we got another special treat. But maybe like a note, maybe all right? Maybe at the end. Fan. So. Right. Yes, we're up a little bit. But I wanna bring Matthew y Mueller on as well. Matthew tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do with the Patel conservatory. Oh, thank you so much. I am the saxophone jazz instructor. Been there since about two thousand twelve I'm actually originally from the Tampa Bay area and I am teaching a week long jazz intensive it's such ally. Fifteenth to the nineteenth and we basically put kids in the small and large jazz band setting. So we have saxophone trumpet clarinet trombone pretty much any wind instrument, and then are accompanied by piano, bass and drums, and it's nine to four throughout the dating entire week. And we end the camp with a performance, and we kind of focus on some of the music of the nineteen fifties and sixties, like John Coltrane miles Davis Ray all the way up system, some more modern stuff like tower of power when. Really funky with it. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So and we have classes that, that run throughout the years. Well, I teach a class every Saturday, that's running this entire summer from just started up last weekend and runs through August, tenth, and as well as throughout the phone spring semesters. Now are these kids when they come in, they have to be experienced musicians, and then just wanna learn, you just wanna learn just want to learn we, we do, ask that they have maybe a year or two of experience on their instrument in the age range is pretty Waibel. Take anybody from middle school all the way up to college. And again, it's really just if they've had a little bit experience on their instrument. So we're not having to teach them necessarily the technical aspects of playing the horn. And you know, it's more about the genre of music in the style. You've you've got a saxophone in your hand. Now do you want to give us a little glimpse as to what these students might be learning here? Yeah. Yeah. So this is something called a rhythm changes, his based off of a team called. I got rhythm from a musical quite a while. Uh-huh. It's Friday, baby. Right fantastic, like a cigarette glass of wine. Speakeasy thank you. So this is something that is going to be really.
