"Want to get the chance to replay Craig Button from Howard and Jeremy yesterday morning as Craig Button TSN senior NHL draft analysts joined the show and had plenty to talk about with this upcoming draft class pertaining to own power Matthew Veneers, But he also talked about his past experiences as a general manager in the NHL when looking at a potential Jack Eichel trade for the Sabres this off season. Here is some of what Craig Button had to say. With Howard and Jeremy yesterday on Gr. We wanted to get John because I think you could appreciate the list of things to do facing Kevyn Adams. He already had, You know, Hire an assistant GM hire a head coach. Now he's got a little more heavy lifting to do. Well, you know, I I think the fact that he went through the process of interviewing a number of people for the head coaching job is really good, because it gives you some insights how people look at your team and how they look at how how to improve it, and You know for for Kevin, who you know, has never gone through that. I think that that becomes really helpful In many ways. Now, you know you're at that point of the season and Kevin and his group have had a lot of time to prepare. Just because the Stanley Cup final ended a couple nights ago doesn't mean he hasn't been prepared because he has, but you know, there's you know, the draft free agency. We all know about those things. But expansion also provides opportunity, and it's an opportunity that came along in 2017. And it's It's one that won't come along again now, so there's many different ways to approach of, uh, how you want to improve your team, What opportunities that exist to improve your team? And so now, Kevin has a has a wide canvas sort of speech. Well, let me start with the draft first, and then we'll get to the current roster. Who is the number one prospect in your opinion in this draft? It is own power. And, you know, I You know what? How would I love the under 18 Championship in Dallas? It's really part of me. And only power wasn't there. Matt had been ears wasn't there. William Acklin wasn't there. But It was determined by after watching all that group of players that that everybody had not had an opportunity to watch over the course of the year came clear to me that all power was the best player for me in my mind. Now he went to the world championships and was excellent. And you know, all you gotta do is just watch how coaches use them. Watch how coaches used players. I mean, he starts off drug land didn't really dull. At the end of it. He was clearly in the dark board offensive and playing lots his his brain power his skills and I call him the s player superior sense. You know, super lately like God Uh, size and the skills are real strong. So you put all that together and I usually need. Where do you find these guys? I don't know where you find these guys. I think he's I think he's the number one defensive and I think he's the type of defense and that can control the game. And you know when they come along, there's other good players. I'm not trying to, you know, say that does not. But I like clearly let me be clear here. I clearly see him as the best player. How close he had mentioned on a zoom call the other day, he was leaning to going back to the University of Michigan. So you know, next season might not even be a discussion. Discussion point for Sabre fans. How close do you think he is to being NHL ready? Well, I mean, no. So I'm going to use the kale. My car. Quinton views example. So they came into the league. They were NHL ready, ready to contribute. There's a big difference between putting on a jersey and and played in a lineup and contributed, so I I I call NH already being ready, Contribute. Sale and green views. You know, after the freshman year college, there's a lot of talk about them leading. They went back to school. And, you know people might have said, Well, why would you stay? They went back. They dominated. There were the Holy Baker winner. My car up runner up between Houston They come into the NHL ready to contribute to their team. They were runners. They were one and two in the rookie of the year that year, so An old power play in the legal next year. Yeah, do I think he would benefit from another year at the University of Michigan? Absolutely. And with that, I think he comes in to do what Kalma car and continues did after spending that sophomore season and call and talking Okay, so having said that, let me just for purposes of discussion. Craig, You're Kevin Adams. You mentioned you believe the number One prospect is clearly own power. If you are Kevin Adams, and you were Talking to your scouts. Is there anybody or who else would you even bring up in terms of a discussion as possible options in that top spot? Well, I mean, I think you can go one of two places. I think he can go for me. Brad Clark is a right shot defenseman that can do so many things in the game. He's so smart. He's imaginative. He's creative and You start to think about Rasmus Darling, you know the left shot defenseman. Then he start to think about Bryant Clark. And I think the Brandt has has a style of game. Now listen, I mean, I'm going to compare them to to North Trophy winners, but it's the style that I'm comparing to. And that's Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson. He plays with that type of boldness and You know what? I think that he fetching her, But you know for me, Matty veneers. If you want to sentiment, he becomes the next guy. William Macklin is a good player, but I like Maddie veneers better. So I mean, but that's where I That's where my head takes me. In terms of the two players after own power, why do you like veneers better than Echlin? Because I think veneers has a has a Bo Horvat Jonathan Tae style game. I think act like is really skilled. But I don't think he can impact the game in as many areas as bad. Even here, skin.

Erik Karlsson Matthew Veneers Kevin Adams William Acklin Kevyn Adams Howard Brent Burns Bryant Clark Jeremy William Macklin Brad Clark 2017 Jack Eichel Kevin Rasmus Darling Craig Button yesterday morning yesterday John Craig

"Power, Matthew Veneers William Jacqueline's on the top guys in the draft. Let's start with power, and this has Nothing to do with how he would turn out to be as an NHL player. But I know I mean, I I evaluate guys from interviews and stuff and whether I like them and how they come across and all that. So let's just start there. You don't know how Owen power from Adam. What did you make of him? What did you think of him during the call with the media? I think he's very confident in his abilities without being arrogant. You know, I didn't. I didn't. He didn't look to me or sound to me to be entitled or anything like that. But You know, he did say, you know when he was talking about his abilities, you know, he's a two way defenseman and you know, as good in his own end is good in the offensive zone, and I think he did say something like what team wouldn't want that. You know, And it's like, all right, Cool. You know, I don't mind somebody confident in their abilities and And, you know, knowing that, you know, he's probably the best player in this draft and deserves to be the number one pick, But yet I never felt an entitlement or arrogance, sir. Anything like that from him? Just a nice confidence in in himself in his abilities, and what he wants seems pretty intelligent, you know, And in speaking and Um, you know, I thought he was pretty impressive now. You you wouldn't obviously tell this off a zoom call, but so he's listed at 66 to 14 Balinese 18 years old. I mean, that's crazy. Yeah, Any figure he's still going to get taught. I remember When Tyler Myers was drafted. And I remember, you know, speaking with him at the draft and how tall he was, and then he showed up for training camp, he was taller than he was when he was drafted. And I'm thinking this kid already Dix grew again. Because don't forget. I mean power is 18 years old, So he probably isn't there yet. I mean, there's probably more growing to do with him and, uh He's already as you said, a huge specimen as far as the size he is now I thought, you know, reading your article. Paul. I thought there was some interesting comments from him and You know, the idea of he guesses leaning to going back to Michigan, but But as a saber fan, don't freak out and think he would have turned pro. The Sabres weren't going to draft him. But I thought he made some really cool points about the college experience. I mean, Michigan, first off is still going to be really good. But the idea of going back, Um I've had a chance to actually see a game years ago at Yost Arena. It's a great place to watch a game. When that place is packed. It is loud and I thought it was interesting what he said about I'd like to experience that I want to be back in college and I want to play where fans are at games again before I go on to the pros, and he wants to go to class can at that point. I have a problem with this kid, but we'll deal with that. Later, he said. Everything was remote, He said. All he did is go to go to practice and go back to his, uh, his apartment or whatever. It was his dorm room. I don't remember where twenties women but And that was it and everything was remote. And, uh, you know, so you know, he he missed that total experience and You know, he's not a guy that's going to go play four years at Michigan just to screw over the Sabres, and I get that all the time that I mean for for whatever reason, fans think that this is done all the time that that's what's that's what college players do it. It's done very, very rarely. And forget about VC. VC told Sabres Not to trade for him told everybody in the NHL not to trade for him, and they did anyway. So it's happened once to the savers. It happened with Cal Peterson. Yep. And and all the guys that they've drafted from college, and it's happened once to them. So it's not a common occurrence that happens all the time and power, said himself. His plan is this he wants to. He wants to go one more year. And he hasn't decided totally. That's what he's gonna do. He still wants to talk to the team that drafts him. Get their opinions on it. And he's meeting with Kevin Adams today, so I'm sure he will get Kevin Addison painting on it today. You know when they do have their meeting. And, you know, make a decision with that. You know after that, But he totally said that His plan is to go one more year to Michigan and then enter the NHL and Depending on how long Michigan is in. I mean, if they don't make it all the way to the frozen four, he could be in the Sabres lineup. In late March or something like that, if you know they sign them and all of a sudden he's in the lineup, and the other thing that people have to realize is The number one overall pick. Is always going to be drafted by a bad teen. Uh, so it's not like this is something we do. People think that the Sabres are the worst organization ever in the National Hockey League, and I'm not here to defend their organization and say, I have made mistakes. But I think we can go through the years and fine organizations that are worse than the Buffalo Sabres and You know, number one overall picks. None of them have ever gone to four years of college and become a free agent. And they know that they're going to be drafted by bad teams. So, Yeah, Okay. Oh, and power is going to be drafted by a bad team. And that's what happens to number one overall picks unless the Pittsburgh Penguins would have won last year's placeholder lottery draft lottery. Which would have been really sad. The other guys there. I said they're a bunch of prospects. It wasn't just own power any anything, Grab you, anybody stand out. No these days. These kids don't really say anything That's crazy. I mean, they're they're coached by their agents and Uh, you know that type of thing to say the right thing they're coached on what to say during their interviews with teams. How to handle the press. So really, you listen through, there wasn't really anything other than talking to power and You know him saying that, uh, you know he's not going to be playing, you know, four years at Michigan. Really? There was everything was pretty bland of vanilla. Do you think I mean, it seems like he is a consensus number one pick, but no one is talking about him as a generational defenseman. Change your franchise around. You know all that kind of stuff. It, however, do you think it's a pretty easy decision for the Sabres to draft power or not? Yeah, I think you know, seem in the world Championship made it a lot easier. To me. He I think is now that consensus. I don't know if he was, you know when the college season was still going on. You know, a lot of people thought. Yeah, He's the best guy. But I don't know. There was some things that maybe people were picking a part of his game. And then he shows up at the World Championship and and the gold medal game is getting the the key ice time. He played over half the third period. In the.

"If he decides to walk away from a number one spot with the Buffalo Sabres. Then it what number One spots are going to be open in the league. There's a lot of goalies that are going to be looking for those chairs in that game of musical chairs, so it may not be available so Find something that words a market a team that knows you and stay there. And that would be my, uh, my advice to lead us all Mark and I would I would. I would love leaders to come back. I think he's a great goaltender. But if these pricing himself out of it, then you move on you go somewhere else. Marty Baron on the Western hotline. Alright. Marty will enjoy the game tonight. The rest of the series. However long it goes and What might be a busy busy offseason, especially for the team in town, and it could be a very, very busy off season. The expansion draft the draft, the free agency and all that, and then it starts over again. Hopefully, late September's with camp, So we're really looking forward to see what the Sabres do. All right, Marty. Always good to talk to you. Awesome. I have a good one. You too, Marty Baron on the West. Her hotline on all things Sabres. We've got, uh Yeah. Good stuff, Quick thing. I've got to let let's get to connect with our fans break and I want I want to ask you this because hopefully this person is listening and not just just texting. Um we'll connect with our fans brought you buy bonds. Henican King, a full service Buffalo law firm. So the Sabres have the first pick and I believe own power. You can you can put it in stone. I think they're going to take on power. And anyway, a texter writes in About What the Sabres could do with the other pick. Could they really go with Ekland first overall or trade back if you're going to do that, Because Ackland has William Macklin, even Ben in the top five conversation? And I'll tell you what I say. Like Central Scouting does not have William Echlin ranked as the number one skater, or SS is the number one is a European skater, right? I'll just say this. I have seen lots of smart hockey people that I think are pretty good at all this stuff. Say. Some version of if the Sabres are really smart Ackland will be their top ranked forward. Had seen that for 234 weeks and then last week, Lance Lisovsky reported. That explains their number one Ford and I saw those same people, right. Good. That's the right answer. Not the same. Maddie Matthew veneers is no good, but just there. They would not be alone. The Sabres If they thought William Echlin was the highest rated forward in this draft, there are going to be teams. That put Ekland ahead of Matthew veneers, right? Sure, I mean, I wouldn't. I wouldn't doubt it. Whether I mean that comes to fruition, where Ackland is the second overall pick or Matthew Veneers is I'm not entirely sure, but I'm sure there are teams out there that do value a guy like William Echlin over a guy like Matthew Veneers just because William Macklin last year in the Swedish Hockey League, playing in a professional hockey league over in Europe started off really, really strong in his seasons with Juror Gardens. Wenger Gardens is Djurgarden. Yes, it's an there aren't all right team. They're not. They're not a top level team, you know, like some of the other teams over there, but You know he was able to contribute real well generate play. Really be a creative playmaker and a good passer. And, you know, it also helps when you're playing with a guy like Alexander Holtz, who was the first round pick of the Devil's the past 2020 draft, so You know, and Matthew veneers. I think that he is a very good You know, to a center. He's 100% of the time he's going, You know, it's just Don't know. Some teams might see William. I mean, I personally don't have William Ekland over Matthew. But here's I think Matthew veneers is over William Echlin, but I could easily see where some people would say. You know, William Macklin, I I think he might turn out to be a better player than Then Matthew being here is just in terms of offensive production in playmaking. Just because I don't think ba nears is necessarily that Premier playmaker or anything like that. He's just a really good two way player with a good drive to his game. He could still generate offense, but the he's one of the million players that's going to comparing himself to Jonathan Tapes. Sure, the texts are actually said, like he's like he's like tapes like every player wants to say they're like tapes because It couches any sort of offensive expectation and means you are a complete player because Dave's is a complete player has been a complete player and didn't put up monster offensive numbers ever each and every year. The thing I would say about about, you know, veneers versus Ekland. You know? There are the central scouting in the NHL. Usually the first pick has agreed upon then the second pick is also sometimes agree as you get further and further down and you get more variation. And look no further than you know, the McDavid's cycle year Every single team in the league would have gone. McDavid's one. Eichel, too, and then strong went three and then Marner four. So sometimes 3445 like you still get good NHL players, sometimes that ceiling player Is taking a little bit later in the draft and thinking about Marner or our martyr and Strom. I'm thinking about Reinhardt and Dries Idol Reinhardt goes to dry. Seidel goes four. Right. Four or three had a Bennett. Anyway, The point is, if you if the Sabres like Echlin the most they're not alone. I have seen that plenty of places. And you know they've gotten things wrong..

"I think there's a lot of interesting names, but outside of Darlene There isn't really that premier guy. And while I like own power as a player, and I think that I like him for the potential of his game, the big concern to me is I mean, you're looking at an NC defender who I didn't really find to be particularly dominant or or Comfortable, really in multiple situations, and if we're talking about putting him in the NHL next year on a team that might be rebuilding That's I think a pretty precarious position and like you said, projecting is kind of the name of the game. To me. There are players that I have above him that I think are easier to project to the NHL easier to project quicker. And I think will play a role that especially if you're trading guys like Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart that opens up pretty big holes down the middle. And I mean, I'm not. I'm I like Dylan cousins as much as the next guy. But a player like Matthew been years is a guy who was always always stuck out to me more than power. And at number one, you know, I think it's going to be a guy that endears himself to Buffalo Sabres fans with the way that he plays and I think he's going to be one of those guys where you could put him in the NHL, and he might not be extremely effective. But I think you can tell that he would be on the right track, whereas with power, I really am scared of teams, putting him in the NHL and him being another one of these defenseman where People see size and skating ability and just think everything will work out and then you know, they just get shoveled minutes. Too much too fast. I've seen it with a lot of high draft picks that defenseman in the last 5 10 years. So We'll see what happens. I would not be surprised to see him go number one based on what's out there, But I feel like a bit of a guy on an island with the with the concerns that I'm seeing with him. Will scout Will scout from the scouting report joins us right now on the West. Her hotline here on W G. R Brenton Wilson filling in for the instigators today. So, Matthew veneers you just mentioned if the sabers don't go Oh, and power number one. Would he be your number one guy or who near the top of the draft? Could you also seeing going number one if the Sabres pass on its own power? Veneers would be my guy. I especially if the trades that are rumored to might potentially be happening, come to pass. Um, I think the nears immediately. Think veneers immediately fills that gap. Um and I think that there's a lot to work with with him. It's the only other players that I would consider is William Ekland. I know that there has been reports about the Buffalo Sabres, potentially acquiring another high pick to land him. I think William Ekland is good enough to be considered at number one. He wouldn't be my pick there, but I think he's good enough. But veneers would be my guy for a number of different reasons. I know people who question his offensive upside, but a lot of the data that I tracked Show that I am not at all concerned about his offensive upside, or at least with development that his offense could come out even more. He scored a ton in junior hockey before he came to college, and he scored pretty well in college for for a freshman. So I I think there's a lot to work with with a guy like been years, especially considering that he is a center and there aren't that many guys in this year's draft that I'd be super comfortable. You know, projecting his NHL centers right now, and I think that you know those 200 ft game that he brings. He solidifies his line whenever he steps on the ice. He's a great transition player. Really creative playmaker offensively with a bit of scoring on the side. I think that he's a nice, malleable guy to work with. That will only get better as he sort of gets stronger on his frame and and filled out and just gets more experienced. I'm a huge fan of him. But William Macklin is just another really good option. So if that favors can add another one of those topics I I would be. If the near the knuckle under Buffalo Sabres up to the draft, I would be pretty thrilled. "So there's too many things in the way. I don't think it's going to happen, but I'm on the minority. When it comes to that. You'll talk to Elliot treatment, and now it will probably tell you, uh, it's uh, it's imminent. That is Jack Eichel. Trade is happening. So, um, I don't have any information. These guys have most of the information, but I just don't see it happening. But for Kevin Adams I think he's got to look at trading players. He's got to look at what will get them the best value. He's got to be able to get prospects. He's got to be able to get NHL players that will make a difference. And you look at some Brian Art and wrath Mistress Elena that probably two of the players that can get you the best return. So that's where you're spending your time. Right now. You got the coach. I searched on you Pick your head coach. Now you've got to work on the trades and seeing if there's value in any of your players that you may be looking to trade. Um, I I read something somewhere that Disables have not talked to Owen Power yet. Why? Because they're so that number one. They don't need to go in and do a deep interview process to see what they're going to do at number one. They have to figure out what else can they do now before expansion draft before the draft? To be able to maximize the value of something that they would be in the works with great, so that's what I think is the next step on the agenda for Kevin Adams, speaking of that number one draft, it is kind of interesting because You know, with Owen Power and Matthew Veneers. They're arguably the one to write at the top of the draft. Do you see this Anyway? The sabers don't take Owen power and maybe take Matthew veneers. What are your thoughts and How they approach that number one pick. No, I don't think there's any in my opinion after talking to many experts and people that do their draft list, and I've seen those players play at the under 18 or at Michigan or whatnot. I think it's all in power number one. Listen, He's not in my opinion. He's not going to be playing for the Sabres next year. So this is not where you have to draft a guy and bring him into your lineup, and I think long term I really like a big, strong, steady defenseman like Owen Power. You have Rasmus selling that is more your punk moving up the ice defenseman. You have a young Henry? Okay? Are you you have will Borgen that is more of a state on physical. You've got a great you know great bones on the back end right now and adding an Owen power with Would solidify that probably for the next 78 years. Right, So it's not about next season. It's about the long the long game, but I really believe Olin powers, the guy that, uh Had that the Sabres would would be benefiting and picking this year at number one overall. And then if you can make an icicle trade or Reinhardt trade or what, not, and you can get another top 10 pick And then you can look at. Maybe you know mad veneers, although people think he's going to go second overall, but there's a lot of other good talent in the top 10, and that's going to be interesting to see what the Sabres would do with that. Corey and I were having this discussion. Marty just before we had gone to break and gotten to you about the potential of Erasmus risked a line and move and just And also the idea of how they approach that position going forward with the expansion draft. I mean, with one year left on his deal at $5.4 Million, and I think a lot of teams know exactly what Rasmus risk the line and brings to the table. How do they? How do they approach him going into the offseason? Where He's openly said for three straight years now, either the fact that I know that change is coming. I'm likely one of the first people out, and he also said this year he's not open for a for a rebuild here in Buffalo, and he needs to get to the playoffs. How do they approach recipes first line in for a third straight year? Well, I mean, if you look at the expansion draft, right, So you've got one or two more defenseman that you would like to keep, but you can only protect three. I am. So does that leave Rice, Mr. Misaligned and open. I would think not. The problem is if you leave risk to open you're not getting anything in return that the only thing you're getting is the cap space that you're saving. Over $5 million, But I do believe that as Mr Simon can get you a decent returns. So you've got to look to trade if your idea was to say we we want to keep Darlene want to keep your key. Okay? Are you We want to protect Morgan? Those are the guys you think to protect to build for the future that leaves restore on the out. I would think that should be looking at a trade instead of losing him and not get anything in return. So that's the number one thing. The thing with Risto as I believe he's strong. He can skate. He can be physical. Um, he's got a good shot. He can be. You know, he creates some offense. I just don't think he gets the game and the systems and how to defend, um, like he should. I mean, this is not a first or second year defenseman in the National Hockey League? And say, Ho, you'll learn, you'll learn they'll learn By this point. You would think that some of the mistakes and coverage and some of that at times where he gets lost in the defensive zone should should be remedied. It shouldn't happen anymore. Now some people are going to say Yeah, but he's had six coaches. I mean, it's hard for him to be able to to gather like what he's supposed to do, but at the same time something When you get caught in your loss in your zone, you usually revert to your internal instincts. I don't think that is defensive instincts are good at all. So I would I would definitely move on from Bristol and I would build with. Like I said, Darling, you're here. Are you Samuelsson? Bargain? Owen power if you pick him first. That's what I would be building with. On the back end. Marty Baron joining us here in the Western hotline. Alright, Marty, I'll move on to the Stanley Cup final now and Well. Montreal is now on the brink down three. Nothing. Tampa Bay will look to close out the series on Monday with a sweep. It will be the first sweep in the Stanley Cup finals since 1998. His Montreal done,.

"Type of player who this year in in the H L really put it together with Rochester, especially later in the year on the right side. He was North Division All Star for crying out loud with Rochester. He's got a lot of potential. For a guy that Jason Box well drafted in the third round, and everybody said Wait. Who is this guy? Scary lacks. Idan is that guy? And he is a Pretty darn good defenseman and another good year in Rochester for lax Idan and especially if Ryan Johnson can have a really good year again in Minnesota in his junior year. You know, is Ryan Johnson gonna be an NHL right away? Perhaps. But certainly with a good year in Minnesota. There's a potential for that. I think another good year for relaxing in in Rochester would certainly help his prospect of becoming an NH other sooner rather than later. So by the time we get to this point, let's hypothetically say the Sabres draft open power number one overall. He plays another year in college and comes in right away and He is just, you know, dominant at the collegiate level, he can come into the NHL. Your Your top six include potentially potentially Darlene Yoki Hardaway's Your top pairing. I'd say power and lacks indent. Is your second paring. Maybe. And then your third pairing could be Ryan Johnson and will bargain That's that's damn good. That is damn damn good. I would take that but again. I really, really like Matthew veneers and and you know, I'll have a mock draft right before the draft comes out. And, you know, I'll give you some final thoughts heading into the draft where these these players kind of project. And who knows? Maybe the Sabres will make this cycle trade sooner rather than later and they get another top 10 pick. That's another player. That's going to make things very interesting for the Sabres going forward. Could they get the third pick from Anaheim? Could they get the eighth pick? From Los Angeles Could they potentially get the fifth pick from Columbus? We don't know. We don't know what exactly is going to come back in a potential Eichel trade, but the goal seems to be. They're trying to get another top pick in this year's draft. Wherever that may fall, however, that may play out..

"That is Sabres General manager Kevyn Adams speaking about the draft class. And yesterday. The question I believe was was asked in the way of, you know, you know, I think it was Mookie Hawkins, who asked this question. And he asked, you know about Oh, and power, Just like you know. How do you feel about him? And, you know, is he going to pretty much be the next you know Josh Allen of this draft or something like that. And Kevin Adams had that response. He didn't necessarily mentioned Oh, and power and Listening to it again, You know, um, certainly it It leaves a little doubt in your mind as to if the savers are actually going to draft him. I mean, yes, I get it. The Sabres have been busy with the the coaching search and coach watch and figuring out what they're going to do. And they hired Don Granato. And yesterday A story comes out from Mike Morey Allen NHL dot com. Talking with Own power. Little bit of his future and whether he's going to make the jump to the NHL or go back to Michigan and play another year with the Wolverines, which I think is absolutely fine. Power can do that veneers can do that. Ken Johnson. Obviously he should do that. But Looking at the top of the draft, and we just talked with Will Scotch Great job with the scouting report on YouTube, and, uh, he's at Scow Ching on Twitter. He does a great job breaking down these these prospects and putting them in their own tears and rankings and He definitely said something that I would agree with. I would agree with the fact that I'm not necessarily so sold on Owen Power. Yes, I think Owen power had a good World Championship, and I think that at times he really he really did flashes potential at the car at the collegiate level, but There are certain things about Owen Powers game that Still needs some work. And you know another year college could potentially help with that. But Will scour each pretty much put it as you know, it took him time to adjust it with certain things. And there were certain aspects of his game that necessarily didn't come about, you know. Right away or didn't come about at all during the season, so We will have to see. But I'm looking at this year's draft that I'm looking at the top of the draft, and I really do like Matthew Veneers. I really like Matthew B. Ba nears a lot and if you if you missed it, and it's been a while since I I wrote these prospects Profiles, but I did write about Owen Power and I did write about Matthew veneers on our website. W gr 5 50 dot com. And Looking at Both of their games. Matthew Veneers is Definitely a player that people no matter where he's going to get drafted. People are going to love Matthew Veneers. He is a 200 ft player. He goes 110% 100% of the time. And he he's just never going to give up on a play. That's exactly what people in buffalo are going to love about Matthew Veneers and with Owen Power, and this is a and I hate bringing this up. Because this has been brought up in the past and talked about here, especially in Buffalo. If you're drafting Owen Power for size in skating. Do not expect him to be Zidane. Oh, Ciara. Tyler Myers when people when we drafted him, and everybody was just like, Oh, he's got to become the Sedano Ciara, please. Zidane Oh, Ciara's. They do not grow on trees. They do not come every once in a while. They are once in a lifetime players and the way this game is going Players like Zidane, Achara. Yes, they're still going to be around, but they're not going to be many of them. And for people looking at Owen power and thinking that Oh, well, he's got the six ft six frame £215 yada yada. Well, if he adds another £20 and adds a little muscle and gets tough, He can be the city. No trial. No, We cannot expect that of these guys, especially in today's game. A lot of these type of defenseman are going to Make the they're going to develop into these very good skating defenseman with heads up all the time and making these really nice plays and Owen Power is one of those guys who probably has one of the who probably has arguably the best vision of especially the defenseman in this draft class. He skates really well, but if you watch him, his head is always up, and he's always looking around trying to make the best passes and trying to make the best players. He's got very good vision. Very good hockey sense. And, you know, there are reasons why he is projected to be where he is at number one just because of the potential that he has Especially if he goes back to college this year and really puts it all together and starts to dominate at the collegiate level that will make that pick even more of a Oh, yeah, for sure, That's why he was drafted number one. However. Like Will said there are certain things with his game that there are still plenty of question marks about And I personally really like Matthew veneers. And if I am the Sabres at number one, I'm probably taking Matthew veneers. But Then again. Like I brought up You look at his Potential projection and and, you know, looking ahead at what he could become if he becomes a really nice second pair defenseman, especially on the left side. And if you have Rasmus Dahlin here in Buffalo as the number one defenseman who you know he's shown over the past few years that he can have that potential to become That top number one defenseman for an organization and and be able to do all he can do. The Sabres have Darlene and power 12. That's a really, really nice 12 punch on your defensive group, and especially with Ryan Johnson coming in who could be the Third or second pair left handed defenseman on the on the right side. You've already got Henry. Okay? How are you? And you've also got Will Borgen, Who's there? And Oscar relaxing and is a really, really.

"Yes, it's interesting with that sort of analysis that you bring about with power, given the fact that But the Sabres, who have the number one overall pick, they already have a Rassmann Stalin, whose projected many by many to be a top pairing, number one defenseman and a guy that could potentially be one of the best defenseman in the NHL. So a player like power If he develops into a nice second pair defenseman for for team like the Sabres, You've got a really nice 12 punch right at the top there on the left side. That's true. And I'm a huge fan of Rasmus Darlene, and I think I look at the Buffalo Sabres Defense group and in terms of youth and projecting into the future. Uh, I think there's a lot of interesting names, but outside of Darlene There isn't really that premier guy. And while I like own power as a player, and I think that I like him for the potential of his game, the big concern to me is I mean, you're looking at an inside defender who I didn't really find to be particularly dominant or or Comfortable, really in multiple situations, and if we're talking about putting him in the NHL next year on a team that might be rebuilding, that's I think a pretty precarious position and like you said. Projecting is kind of the name of the game. To me. There are players that I have above him that I think are easier to project to the NHL easier to project quicker and I think will play a role that especially if you're trading guys like Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart. That opens up pretty big holes down the middle. And I mean, I'm not a I like Dylan cousins as much as the next guy, but a player like Matthew been years as a guy who was always always stuck out to me more than power. Will Scotch Will scout from the scouting report joins us right now on the west. Her hotline here on W gr Britain Wilson filling in for the instigators today. So, Matthew veneers you just mentioned if the sabers don't go, Oh, and power number one. Would he be your number one guy or who near the top of the draft? Could you also seeing going number one if the Sabres pass on its own power? Veneers would be my guy. I especially if the trades that are rumored to might potentially be happening, come to pass. Um, I think the years immediately Think veneers immediately fills that gap. Um and I think that there's a lot to work with with him. If the only other players that I would consider is William Ekland, I know that there has been reports about the Buffalo Sabres, potentially acquiring another high pick to land him. He scored a ton in junior hockey before he came to college, and he scored pretty well in college for freshman so I think there's a lot to work with with a guy like been years, especially considering that he is a center and there aren't that many guys in this year's draft that I'd be super comfortable projecting his NHL centers right now. And I think that you know those 200 ft game that he brings. He solidifies his lying whenever he steps on the ice. He's a great transition player, really creative playmaker offensively with a bit of scoring on the side. I think that he's a nice, malleable guy to work with. That will only get better as he sort of gets stronger on his frame and and filled out and just gets more experienced. I'm a huge fan of him. But William Macklin is just another really good option, so if that favors can add another one of those top picks I I would be if the near the neck calendar buffalo Sabres up to the draft. I would be pretty thrilled. Yeah, I was going to ask you, actually next about William Macklin. What makes him stand out from from the rest of the forward group. Aside from veneers that makes him As highly touted as he is heading into the draft. He's just another one of these really smart but also fast and skilled players. Um, you know, you're not going to get an enormous 200 ft player out of them. I don't think He's a really good offensive player. He's not a poor defensive player he puts in the work, but he is kind of flight on his brain. But that's not what you draft him for. He's such a great, complimentary guy. You wouldn't run a line through him. But he's a dual threat offense guy. You can set up a play, he can score. He's excellent along the boards, with the puck evading pressure fighting off pressure, especially for a guy his size. There's a lot of project herbal talents that I see out of them. That are really, really good. You were, you might have to do a bit of homework. His first half was spectacular. Its second half. He lost the center that he worked off of really well in Sweden. He got covid. I believe there was another injury in there, and he just seemed to slow down a little bit so Digging into that to see what's going on. And how that might have affected him is definitely a task. But if based on what I've seen of him this season, it's about even even throughout the entire year. I'm really, really hopeful. He's just a smart play driving guy that can make a play scored just a very well rounded offensive player that is well rounded in the right ways, I think and you know, not just saying his feeling. Maybe as a third line scoring guy, I think that there's top six upside for him. Dual threat offense and just a ton to really, really like it that traditional sort of skilled, fast fun offensive winner. Who else from this draft class, especially from the forward group. Stands out to you as a potential player that might be of interest for a team like the Sabres going forward if they managed to get another top 10, maybe even a top 15 pick in this year's draft..

"Idea to say. We're not gonna pick in the first round this year with worst team in hockey. We have a bad prospect pool. Oh, and we're not picking first this year. We're not picking in the first round. I mean, on the surface. Team might just not do it because of how it looks. Which, by the way, should always be an awful reason to not do something is how it looks. But I think that's the strongest argument to not doing a trade like that. So T O go back to the caller's point originally. I am 100% anti trading down there. I'm not interested in anybody in this class is not Matthew Veneers the rest of the same to me. I know they're not. I know this probably a drop off from like 9 to 15 or something. I just don't care. I just don't care if it's not been ears. I have no interest. Almost no interest. Compared to If you could sell your first for a first next year. So that's the on Lee trade. I would really be up for otherwise you sit there one and you pick the center. You pick Matthew veneers and you go forward with a center pool of Veneers, cousins, Middle stat. And maybe you even add to that with a Quinton by field. Or maybe, by the way, maybe that makes you more open to dealing with the Rangers. If you're going to trade Eichel Was part of the reason the Kings have been more exciting as a trade partner. Is there guys a center? Quentin by field is a center. But if you've already got a guy that's a center and veneers. Well, maybe I'm much more intrigued by Alexis Law from here. That's just what's running around in my mind right now. Let's go to Carl. Carl, you are on the nightcap. I was going What Joe, I don't I don't think the news is number one center, so I don't know if you want to bank on him Free trade, Michael, but I like the idea of moving Um, the number one pick along with the trade instead of moving down Like you. Um can I throw a possible trade EA to get what you go for it? Jack and Sam to Vancouver for cutters and ambassador Plus prospect there. Pick what do you think of that? I like it there. Apparently, those two guys were in the same spot. Check it. Simmer and then Cooper. What do you think? I like. I like the idea. I don't think they're in the same spot in that they're about ready to force their way out. Bester, I think just signed a new deal in Patterson's got years to go before he could ever hit the open market. He's 22 years old. Now. Trade itself. Patterson Besser and put like something else, Then I think that's about as good as you're going to do. Unless you just want to go for a mad amount of peace is if you just want to get five pieces, picks and prospects. But if you can get better, who is a Don't know a ton about Besser. I know he's a goal scorer, and I know he puts up similar statistics on the surface to Sam Reinhart. And he's young. He's 24 years old and there you're right. There have been rumors in the past year that they might want to trade him. So Patterson to me is He comes in, and he's immediately you're number one center and you can compete within a year or two. With him is your number one center? I think So I And I think my answer be, yes. Think my answer would be yes. Michael is the best player in the deal. But part of it is I'm I'm hard pressed to see Sabers getting a player better than Elias Patterson back for Jack Eichel. It's you know, immediately, they could get a guy who becomes better than Elias Patterson, Quentin by field could become better than allies. Patterson Law firm here could become better. There's no one you're trading for. I think That that might be realistic. That's better than him. I mean, First line center in the league. That's 22 years old. That's Zhar to beat. 803 Oh, 5 50 is the phone number We don't know yet when we might be hearing from Kevin Adams, but it will be relatively soon. Um So we'll take a time out here and maybe we'll even bring bringing you Kevin Adams on the other side. In fact, he's gonna be coming up at 8 30. 8 30, so we'll come back here. We'll take a couple more calls and we'll roll along here on the nightcap..

"Thoughts. Eagle three Oh, 5 51 80 Day 5 52 5 50 the toll free number. Do you agree with me in the sense? That the off season for the sabers begins with the decision on Jack Eichel, because if they trade Jack Eichel, okay? Then what do you do with Sam? Right Heart? The same right heart want to stay? Does he want to stay a long term? If he does, Okay, there's some money that's opened up now, after you trade Eichel, you're probably gonna bring some money back in in as part of that trade with the return. But then you could give some of that money to Sam Reiner and say, OK? You've earned this money. You've earned this contract. Here you go. Let's move forward here and let's try to turn things around with a Sam Reinhart lead team. Don Granato, Especially Don Granado is the coach Don Granado loved Sam Reinhart and his leadership qualities that he brought to the team this past season. He spoke highly. Of Sam Ryan, her and his leadership abilities on and off the ice on the bench in the locker room. If if Don Gradel comes back, especially as the coach. Then. Sam Reinhart might be that next player that we looked to as that next leader of this team. Maybe it's not the captain right away. Maybe he never gets to be the captain. Maybe he just has an alternate captain, But he's one of the guys that's gonna be looked at me going forward. Then what of the sabers do with the draft The draft lottery? Obviously, I mean, I've been writing stuff a w g r 5 50 dot com Over the past couple of weeks with Prospect profiles I've written about Owen Power. Matthew Veneers, Kent Johnson, and yesterday I wrote about Luke use And there's gonna be more coming. I promise you that there's gonna be more coming as we go on throughout the rest of the you know. Nearly two months process now, actually, the less than two months now. Where we're waiting for the draft to come about July, 2030 is round one savers again will pick 12 or three. We'll know where they're picking this upcoming Wednesday with the draft lottery And The goal for me writing these prospect profiles is okay. Say the sabers were picking number one Who's the best prospect? Okay, They're picking number two. Who's the Who's the next after the best and then it number three. OK, you're at number three. You didn't win the first two picks, so you get one into off the board Who's a now available that Sabers can play around with and and do they bring in a defenseman? Do they bring in a forward? And I think Jack Eichel might have something to do with how they play it out in the draft if Jack Eichel's going to be here That maybe they don't have to focus on replenishing your forward group A little bit or, you know if you trade Jack Eichel, and you bring in a bunch of forward prospects, A number of, you know, Ah, young number one center potential type player, another depth player. If you want an NHL players, some sort, and then you get back a first round pick maybe another pick or something like that. Because let's be honest, I don't know what the return of a Jack Eichel trade is going to look like a this point. But let's just say That you get this trade and the return does that help the sabers lean in one direction or the other And obviously you don't want to be going out and drafting for me, That's that's not the right approach to take. But let's say that you have the best player on your board available there and it happens to be a forward or it happens to be a defenseman. And you know, it has to have some sort of factoring too. Where? What direction you want to go in. Making the pick at number 12 or three doesn't matter where you are. Maybe the sabers, then think. Okay, let's trade back in the draft. There's so many variants is going forward, and that's not even to mention free agency, one of the Sabre's doing free agency. I know Kevin Adams said. Well, we want to bring in. You know, we wanna have players here that want to be here. What player in free agency wants to come to the sabers right now. The depth players that have been coming here for the past several years and and you know the Jason bottles. The Timor is saying that these players are going to make an impact right away. Kevin Adams and you know Ralph Krueger this past year loved bringing in Toby Reader loved bringing in Cody Eakin because a they were going to help with the penalty, kill and be their leaders. And you know, they do all the good things that step forwards. Cody Eakin was terrible. This year. He was one of the worst forwards. This team had the he couldn't generate any offense. His defensive play was not great from years past. But yet it was. It was a depth center that they brought in. Okay. What about Toby? Reader Suri bring speed and complain the penalty kill, but You know, he got a few goals, I guess cool, but he was scratched half the time last year at the second half of the year as Don Granado was wanting to play. These younger players get him in the lineup. Let's see what they can do on the ice. And tell him to go play their game. They did, and they performed well, and there was really no reason to put in Toby reader until there were injuries that came up. Over greater came in and really didn't make much of a factor in the rest of the season. Reader's going to be a free agent. I would Likely bet he's going to be gone. I would likely think Riley Sheahan is going to be gone. I mean, in fact, I'm looking at the sabers cat friendly page right now. And the veterans that are unrestricted free agents in reader Could Ula and Shan villain one that I'd be interested in and bringing back in any way is Drake Casula? Just because You know, he's still 26 years old. He was a name that was here who, you know, played well at development camp and then got into the NHL here. Great college career was never really able to put it together. Well, what happens if done, Granado comes in and you know Gets the chance to work with casual a little marks. He's head past history could you'll and get him back to the game where he's scoring goals, and he's being a contributor off the wing or down the middle or wherever they decide to play him. And then you're looking at the blue line. Matt Irwin's of free agent Goodbye. Carter hunting free Agent. Goodbye, Lena's Hallmark. Obviously, he's a U F fe. But the gold probably is to get him re signed. Which would be ideal..

Don Gradel Matthew Veneers Don Granado Sam Reiner Kent Johnson Kevin Adams Don Granato Cody Eakin Riley Sheahan Sam Ryan Sam Reinhart Ralph Krueger Matt Irwin Sam Jack Eichel Wednesday Eichel Ula Shan Granado
