Is Matt Ryan a Hall-of-Famer?
"Personally believe Matt Ryan's a Hall of Famer. Now hear me out. And here's why. He brought his team to a championship. I know they lost that. If they have that championship, eve waltz is in the Hall of Fame. It's the same thing with Matthew Stafford. Matthew Stafford wasn't going to the Hall of Fame. Whether we believe there announced that's wise. I think winning that ring, he's going to get in now. Eli Manning, which is two rings, has probably going to get in the Hall of Fame, 'cause it's New York and it's a whole thing. Okay, now there's your difference. Let's take Eli Manning. Is it the two rings that put Eli Manning in the holiday man in two rings are going to vault him in? But if Eli Manning were to have Aaron Rodgers career, he'd be in the Hall of Fame. And probably waltzing in as well. Aaron Rodgers has four MVP awards. He is dominated his division and he also owns the city of Chicago, but did he really? He comes up short. I agree. He has come up short many times. But how many? He does have a race. On the MVPs. Okay? I mean, think about some of the people who have been named MVPs. All right, and granted, he got it four times. Over the last years when he was really taking a baiting from media about the vaccine stuff. And when you heard his side of the story, which has never been contradicted by the reporters who were trashing him, you know, that he did say what he actually did. He didn't lie about it.

Dalton thrives, Stafford leaves, as Saints top Rams 27-20
"Down 1410 at the half Dalton led the saints on back to back touchdowns to start the third quarter as New Orleans open up the playbook to snap a two game skid and win for just the second time in its last 6 games That's kind of just where we're at and what we need to do is just cut it loose So why not And for us I felt like there was some things that we did today that maybe earlier in the season we probably wouldn't have done Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford left the game in the third quarter entering concussion protocol for the second straight week as Los Angeles dropped its fourth straight I'm Denny Capp

"Are very clear. Others that got a little bit hazier later in the night. All right, Seth. So that haze that Sean mcvay was just describing there. It's cleared. And we are back here in the present tense. I'm talking to you on a Monday, February 7th, and we're talking now 20 games and 15 wins later because Matthew Stafford and Sean mcvay and the whole gang from Cabo have made it. They're here, they're about to play in Super Bowl 56 against the Bengals and it's gonna be a home game it's so far. Technically it's a road game because of the way the NFC and the AFC just alternate that tag every year, but when you trace the trajectory of this year, what is Matthew Stafford proven to you over this season? I think that during the season he was Matthew Stafford and there was moments where he was a brilliant quarterback. There was moments where he threw that momentum killing interception. But he was always the test for him was always going to come in January and February. And obviously he played really well in their opening playoff game against the Arizona Cardinals on the Manning cast Peyton Manning was talking about how, you know, once you have your first playoff win, you can cut loose a little bit. The feeling that Stafford's gonna have after this, I'm telling you, watch out for him next week, right? Because once you get that first one, right? That monkey is off Stafford's back. And he can free up and I think play even loose her next week down in Tampa. As we talked about, he wanted to test himself under the highest levered circumstances and man his he'd done it. You know, that ending to the bucks game after the rams did everything they could to blow it. And he comes through with that huge pass to Cooper Cup. Deep down the right side, he's got cup running down the hash marks. He reels it into the 15 Cooper Cup has the catch tackled at the 12 puts it down in game winning formation. Really bad defense by Tampa by the way, but huge has to Cooper Cup. And then this week this past week against the forty-niners in the fourth quarter, third and three. Kyle Shanahan and Sean mcvay have talked about this where, look, a coach can only do so much. At some point, it's third down, the crowds frenzied. It's a high stakes moment, the quarterback has to be the one who gets the ball deals with chaos and figures it out. And Matthew Stafford figured it out. He stands in and delivers Cooper cop makes the catch breaking across the field breaking attack on the 20 and he's down at the 11 Cooper Cup roars and celebration. He hit Cooper cop on that quicksand that ends up going for a big gain deep into forty-niners territory leads to the game winning field goal. And he's proven not only to himself that he can come up big and big games, but he's proven it to all of us as well. Yeah, I mean, look, Seth, we're at near the end of the road and I'm just wondering when you consider the all in kind of experiment that the rams have pretty uniquely taken on here. With Sean mcvay as sort of the guy who wanted to pull all of these triggers, what does it tell you about their strategy? It tells me that it's barely worked. But it has worked. And I think that when you look at the rams, obviously that's a team that's still trying to gain traction in LA. Those two home games against the forty-niners were the forty-niners probably had more fans, even in the NFC championship game Matthew Stafford had to use a silent count at times. Yes. That's embarrassing, and there's really nothing you can do to change that, I think, other than winning a Super Bowl. And I would say the rams are really interesting because for a lot of the year they were not ahead in their division. Remember the Arizona Cardinals were the ones who were starting the season undefeated and were really setting the lead in that division. And the rams went all in with Matthew Stafford and then as the year went on, they went more all in. You know, they make the deal to acquire OBJ. They trade for von Miller. And I think what was interesting about those two selections is not only that they did it, knowing that they have this window where they're hosting the Super Bowl, where they've got this quarterback and they may not be here again. There's no guarantees in the NFL. They not only got those players, but they got them to buy into what the rams want them to do. Obviously, at the beginning with OBJ, he and Stafford weren't on the same page. It was a little rough there. But now OBJ is essentially become this like Robert Woods like dogged possession receiver. And you have von Miller who obviously is used to being in every down player. He's obviously played a lot with the ramps, but he is brought in for those moments at the end of the game like they had in the NFC championship when that defensive line can turn loose against the quarterback with the game on the line. And that defensive line is a collective. It all worked. It's really amazing how well it all worked. And so if the rams do not win the Super Bowl Seth, is this a failure? That's a great question. I mean, I'd have to say that they would look at it, not like a failure, but something failed. I mean, they should win this game. And it's something that I talked to Matthew Stafford about, 'cause remember when I was with him, I spent a lot of time with Matthew Stafford. I asked Matthew Stafford a lot of questions. And that dude did not want to really answer any of them. He was very polite and he was funny at times and he was funnier off the record. But he really didn't want to answer them because there's just so much pressure. I mean, one of the things that losing does to you, one of the things that plank for the Detroit Lions does to you is that you just learn all these ways that a football game can go wrong. And his wife Kelly Stafford had told me that maybe he was lying to himself, thinking that he could turn things around in Detroit. But he entered the season under a certain kind of pressure, and so as my time with him was wrapping up, I did ask him, like, look. If you guys win the Super Bowl, what are you gonna do? Is it time to loosen up? Can you finally tell us what a disaster wasn't Detroit? Or that, you know, you believe you were the best quarterback all along. And he kind of laughed and he said, you will not be able to find me. And then I drilled down. I was like, no, really, what is going to happen if you win the Super Bowl?.

"Really good defense and you know. He's a good quarterback just not a great one. In my opinion i always felt though like watching. Derek carr. I'm watching him plan person. George that one of the things that just drove me nuts about derek carr was how frequently he flicks the ball and throws off of his back foot now. I'm not peyton manning breaking down the mechanics of quarterback but it doesn't take that much to see a guy throw off his back foot. It's always something that drove me crazy about derek carr. I'm actually surprised since gruden took over the raiders that he's still the quarterback. I never thought this marriage will work. I agree it's working by the way because they haven't won anything but i'm still surprised at the derek. Carr is the quarterback of the raiders. I agree the big story today. We'll get back to it here in a minute. Is clay helton fired at usc. We're talking about. Some of the candidates will get into some of that on the other side paul on the valley who wants to talk about. Se situation. what's up guys. And i wanna give a shout to stanford for putting it on the trojans like that Last week you guys. We're taking calls and You were saying that s defense were mad and to tell you the truth bro. I don't even think it's the coach. I was watching that game. And they don't even really look that good You know that quarterback you know he he constantly those to that same receiver. I don't even know the cat's name lundin do. Yeah drake london and their defense man. I don't know if. I don't know what the whole hype is about e but you know i'm a ucla fan man. And i took the time to watch that game. And i knew stanford was going to beat them They just don't look that impressive to me. Man sorry i i agree with you. I mean that that's my that was my point earlier today. Perception wise stanford really shouldn't be able to theoretically compete with the type of athlete that usc recruits and more often than not gets based on all these recruiting services and how they rank these recruiting classes. And yet they just. I'm not so sure that they were poorly coached or if they're just not as good as advertised. I'm not sure we're going to out. Let's dive into some more of that on the other side of the phones at eight. Seven seven seven ten. Espn where to be back in three minutes..

"Stop being annoying. It's not that serious bro. it's just football. I'm going to swipe left. Also but i'm gonna have it from a different perspective. Which is i. Don't blame anybody's personal relationships for poor performance on the field. I mean it just so happens that the packers looked yesterday and they made the new orleans saints look really really great yesterday but i thought what aaron rodgers said after the game was really interesting. This is of course after he put his hair in his man bun. And i don't care how rich you are. How famous you are. How great you are. I had a man bun. I'm here to tell you we all looked terrible in the mand bunch but aaron rodgers said yesterday's like hey it's one game like we played really badly. It's still only one game and there are still sixteen more games. Yeah let's see what happens to the packers before it's all said and done. Well remember they. They got their butts kicked against tampa in tampa aaron. How terrible game then to and it worked out okay. After that i think it was like week five or whatever it was last year and they still made it to the and dial like yeah. It will work out. It'll be just fine by the way. Jameis winston and sean payton. I love that marriage. When i was filling in for max a couple of weeks ago i was all over that like when they were debating. This tastes hilfiger tastes. He'll he'll give jamison coach and let's see what he can do and so far so good tastes. Them hill was a guy that was on the new orleans saints roster on the kickoff coverage team and they figured out you know what he's too good of an athlete to go. Let's find a way to use him. That's where this whole kind of swiss army knife position came. But he's not a real quarterback. He's a gimmick quarterback. Yes that's exactly what he is. He's a good quarterback all right. Speaking of gimmicks are very popular gimmick radio. Tinder is done for today every day at five thirty. Make sure you're listening to radio. Tinder we got it. I'm talking about spring. We'll get to that plus news on the nba. That you're gonna wanna be cleaned onto if you're a laker fan explaining them. Yeah man i. It's so every time. I listened to park and i. I have a lot of his songs in my phone. I find myself just going man. I missed that dude and not only for his music obviously but just his social commentary like. He's such a brilliant dude. He was such a great artists. Like you know. I'm sure many people our age kind of know how how town he was beyond just wrapping performing like he was an unbelievable dancer like he. I believe he went to juilliard like he was an incredible talent. Man is still to this day. Twenty five years later whenever it's been sorely missed man. Twenty-five years is incredible. And it just reminds me george that this saturday was september eleventh and it was the twenty year anniversary of nine eleven. Two thousand one. And i took a picture this past saturday with my four kids. We went to a bar to watch football game. Because my kids all know this quarterback from notre dame he went to high school in san diego. My kids all knew the guy so we went to this bar to watch this game. And i took a picture and i realized that on september eleventh. Two thousand one. I had one child who was about six months old at that time. And i looked at this picture. Look at these kids. Twenty one thousand nine hundred seventeen fourteen. Wow that's twenty years. That's how you kind of measure the years twenty five years flu like that twenty years the same deal so shout out to pock and shout out to everybody that was thinking about nine eleven this past saturday. Yeah for sure. Obviously happened in vegas and mike tyson after mike tyson fight and all that speaking of vegas vegas raiders are playing at the moment and scoreless with two minutes to go in the first quarter. We'll keep you up to date on how that's going. Speaking of the raiders. Though in vegas retired about keyshawn the other day we played that audio whatever keyshawn had derek carr and his top five and i felt that was a little bit of a troll job like by the way the ravens just scored a long touchdown touchdown run their run middle. Right through the gut of the raiders. Defense tight tyson. Williams thirty five yard. Td run and a lot of people. Now have him on their fantasy team. Because gus edwards also went down We all know. Jacob dobbins with two for the ravens but kisha benching. Derek carr was in his top five and elite quarterbacks. And i i just felt like had to be atro- gruden because i i don't see derek carving. A top. five quarterback is easy. Like is he top of anything like individually scott. You covered the nfl for a long time. You played college football you you are in training camps in the nfl. You know. i'm talking about arm strength accuracy. Anything like is there anything you can look at derek carr and you say to yourself. That guy is at this particular skills at within the quarterback. Construct there's not one thing that i can think of not one thing it all that derek carr top five quarterback in the nfl not anything not in forty yard dash time not in two hundred twenty five pound bench. Press not in. Throw the ball as far as you can throw it not in terms of speed not in terms of accuracy. Now look his whole perception could change or at least my perception of him could change. If all of a sudden the raiders became a winning team. And maybe derek carr finds himself playing in a super bowl. My perception of derek carr is that he is a middle of the road. Average starting quarterback. And if i were the raiders. You know the one thing i'd be thinking about is i look at the rest of the division george and i'd say okay so kansas city has the number one guy in the nfl. The chargers have a young kid who only in his second year. Who already looks like a superstar coming off last year. What he did this past weekend in washington while denver doesn't really have their quarterback situation handled per se. Teddy bridgewater look pretty good this past weekend. Derek carr just always looks to me like a middle of the road guy so until he gets to the playoffs. That's how i'm gonna perceive him. Which by the way. George gets us right back to matthew stafford i perceived matthew stafford the same way and detroit. He's a good quarterback with really good stats. And he's a super tough durable guy who can play through injuries but all of that being said he individually was unable to bring everybody else around him up to his level. Now it's football. It's not basketball. He's one guy in eleven. And he played for a terrible franchise. All those things are true. But he just couldn't elevate everybody and now he's with the rams where he doesn't necessarily have to because the rams are used to winning are accustomed to it and they expect it and there's the big difference for me. Yeah i mean. Look i i just think that i look at matthew stafford though compared to derek carr like matthew. Stafford's got a gun bro. Like that thing is should be illegal to carry. You know what. I'm saying like eight a licensed to carry that. Yeah i seriously dude. So i don't see their that. Like i said i look at derek carr and i think he overachieved in two thousand sixteen or whatever it was and he's a good quarterback not a great one. Good in the sense of if if you would have put derek carr on that ravens team that joe flacco on the role. They'd win the super bowl. He's that good I think he's better than joe. Flacco was at that at that point but that team was like the perfect defense basically or one of the perfect events like a perfect storm. And that's what you need. You need like a perfect storm. Ryan tannehill under another one of those guys even though he's a little more mobile than derek carr where tennessee last year lightning in a bottle. They've got a great running game. They agreed lie..

"That's good would you say that's good but then here okay. The balancing act is now lost. Not because of offense defense is within the office. Entra offense sony michelle. Daryl hinders say like. Is that really playoff. Talk mattress stafford be real. You can't of your self conscious. You can live consciously because that's all you're rational thought and that's over you just rhetoric using words. Yes coach already but d. Dan you never did this before. I'm good. I'm after stafford's okay playoffs. Bring a game to you. Start star slow handball off. You handed the ball off the who headed the ball of and doing what. What kind of success are they gonna having their running game in those playoff moments when you know everything intensifies. That's my only conversation not just going to get it done. But he needs a balance in that. Tom brady needed a balancing act last year to finally get over the hump and get it done. Are they go. Have that intro offense. Balancing bucky no. They're not gonna have the balancing act. They're not going to be able to get it done because they don't have a dynamic that's going to change the cover. They're going to have to put their so. Matthew stafford matthew stafford now detroit west basically. He's in the same offense that he was here. He doesn't have the weapons around the and we're gonna complain about. Oh he needs more he needs. He needs that at some point. Matthew is going to be able to put the entire office on his back when he's having to do it in a division that is harder. 'cause now you have to deal with the yellow san francisco to monsters and so i just don't know how team gets better. I like matthew stafford. But i just not a believer that this often is better with the pieces that they have place around the because the running game is still not a e in the office man they. La is rooting for the rams. I think they are going to be an nfc championship game but beyond that. Just don't mess up so far stadium. We all play because you know the week after my charges being there every single we'll be messing it up. Let's head to dallas. Thank mccarthy missed. The playoffs in his first season with cowboys. but now it's on to year. Two fellas dallas morning news wrote mccarthyesque talked about super bowl or bus for his team at peten all season and making the playoffs might be enough to stop jerry jones from having the clock mark. The clock already ticket. Top mike mccarthy yeah of course it is. I mean this is a production business. I understand that you lost your quarterback last year so you got to get a little bit of a hall pass there but as talented is that roster is especially on the offensive side of the ball if you're not winning that division. There's something wrong now you know. The giants have their issues on offense. There's no question about that. I think the you know the washington football team has got their own set of issues. Although i think they're lying scrimmages is tremendous but you look at how bad that that All division was last year throat. Philadelphian there and the expectation if you play in dallas coach in dallas for jerry jones is we need to win the division. And so if you don't win the division with that with the receiving core they have with the offense of wine with. I mean for for me. It's it's win the division or bus from a garth and interesting you say that Because playing a game you know that yes a production business but there are some caveats if your first rounder struggles. You're a second round of their struggles. I don't give damn produced some not. He's still going to be here to clock's ticking just yet on you because it's like a real weird mix of expectations and desire. So let's just say last year they're going to give him a breakfast ball. Golfers out there little mulligan it turns would that was but let me remind you. Douse is not the only place that has high expectations. Mike mccarthy was at a place name. Titletown i wonder if they had super bowl. Expectations is built into the name. Of course they did is called titletown. Now what did he do in titletown. Oh when he finally got the quarterback the future quarterback they'll his dreams in aaron rodgers. Two thousand and eight. You know what their record was. Six and ten a-rod is played that entire year last year. He had a quarterback to future and dak prescott. He only play four ish game for him. No at record was last year six and ten. Damn if i'm jerry jones. I'm looking at him. He started off six ten inquiry bay. How did that and three years later. Super bowl champions. Oh if anything. The clock is ticking. In terms of how long. It's gonna take this town to win the super bowl by like he did in green bay but in terms of the clock is ticking to expire him as the head coach. All oh they gave him a mulligan. Dany started that clock. That's my thinking as well as you get a mulligan for last year because your quarterback hugo across the quarterback was ugo across. Nfl if they lose their starting quarterbacks you don't expect them to have a great year. That's just the reality of where we are at. Luckily for mike mccarthy in dallas cowboys. Let's just be honest. Their division stinks. We not talking about mark. Schleyer vision is there to be won by the cowboys. If they can stay healthy that offensive line already lie on collins. He probably won't play next thursday in so that was the key. Their offensive line can't stay healthy bed prescott. New look at san francisco with jimmy g. Say whatever you want about jimmy g. when he's in a game the forty niners play well when he's not in a game they don't play well and it's no different across the league. Those starting quarterback your team will struggle. But you look jerry. Johnson he gay jason garrett nine years i believe he chair galliani coach. I can recall says jerry jones on the team. He got fired after his second year. That happened mike mccarthy. No there's a fire under him but this is the vision in my opinion is so bad. It's there to be taken. Let me ask you guys spoke this. Because what if for instance that prescott stays healthy based on relatively healthy on the office side of the ball and they still don't win this division because i. I know there's expectations dirt there dallas cowboys running a lot and they have offensively. They'd got some some pieces. So let's say they all those guys stay healthy and their seven nine beta. Don't make the playoffs. They don't win the division then. What are the expectations for mccarthy. Then what happens. Do they give them another mulligan. Another amina during around if you play with me the whole damn sleeve. That's gonna caulk go start ticking. But let's not act like with jimmy. Johnson went one in fifteen. The clock was ticking. And then jimmy. Johnson stayed five years. One fifteen. Like like you said. Tj we gave jason garrett nine and a half seasons half. He got nine and a half. He went eight eight first year. Not even a winning season. So jerry's a little more patient then reputation for cs and leaves you to but i'm looking at this situation. They are going to win. I don't know if they're going to win ten games where they're going to win this division and it probably won't even take teen gangs to win this division. That's the funny thing about this division right now but what you're trying to do. Stake is something. That's universal when turns to the law of all coaches win there. What's going to happen to you. What are you going to take. But if you lose your starting quarterback and you win only six games. And last time i saw you want a super bowl. It took you three years at the winter. Six game we're going to start the clock just yet because right now. This is parallel to a situation. You went through that ended in success so dish year. They don't win. They don't win a division. They don't win ten plus gangs. I'm starting to clock with you but right now in this moment. Oh no clock is.

"Number two. What does the number eleven number twenty two show mcvay. Oh okay it was all jared goff through a. You can't fool everybody. Tj we played the game but we play the game. It ain't all the quarterback so now let's dive a little deeper too because you mentioned office alive office a lot like don't put that on us last year. We were ranked number three as office. Alive era returning four starters back we only lost one dude so that will known us so there you start to look at the running back position. Oh remember we can't aac he's hurt okay. Now we don't have daryl henderson out there yes quench is out there people. You'll like darrell henderson. Yeah so we got sony michelle so somebody michelle gays play. Fourteen games play six games. Play days white was catching more passes in them. Never yards which is again so now you start to look at it. Matthew stafford out here. Bright lights matthew stafford is a piece is not on him however no playoff wins and then you get to a situation where you're like my running game. We'll see but i got my passing game. Got robert who's got cooper cup. Now here's the thing about them and they they know. I love together but are they individual number one separate. So there's no damning number one out there to threaten but you got a collective group and then you gotta office a lot at a strong. The last year was strong. What happened last year made the playoffs but blamed it. All on jared goff to me right now. There are some question marks there must be answered for them to go out there and ball out question. Mark comes to the rams just matthew stafford it's the former wide receiver. Man he knows the matthew stafford throws the ball trad. Maybe some of the best arm down every you delete. But here's what. I learned from fifty cents winters win and loses loose and when i look at matthew stafford he only has four. Winning seasons under is built and marcel pointed to the running game and the running back situation in matthew stanford career. He's only had eleven one hundred yard runner in a game. Eleven and so when. I think about this rams office and we talked about it. The reason they went in the past wasn't necessarily about jerry golf it was about one a game setting up. Everybody else they don't have a running back that is going to hear anybody. Matthew stafford it's against coverage. And i'm gonna say as respectfully as i can light robber. Would they cooper cup. But they're not number one who is going to be the double team when you started doing. Double coverage adam. So you're planning against loaded zone. You don't have a true number one and you don't have a running back to me. I don't think this office is better with matthew staffer swapping alpha jerry golf because the pieces around the quarterback on improve. They've never had a true number. One then in anybody's is really to be honest with you when they. They finished one when they finished that. They have a true number one. Absolutely not. because it's the same receivers that we have now and so when history shown if you swap out one quarterback another quarterback and that quarterback is better. We should improve. Tampa bay bucks are a prime example. I wouldn't take that extreme. I'm not saying stafford is brady. But you get where i'm going. Matthew stafford is played with one defense that was ranked in the top team. He led detroit to the playoffs. They went eleven and five the rounds at the number one defense in the league last year. Interesting here's my problem. Tj not admitting all the issues to the fullest but your magnifying and to the fullest all the positives. Like you know how it goes when we're sitting there and we gotta go through our team meetings and then we break down into like separate sides so offense over there with the coordinator defense then we break down again. God dang how many times. I've got break up now down into opposition groups you gotta keep it one hundred per unit position group being. Because that's the one you be in the longest anyway. Read out on a robert woods. Can't get off that press cove cut deep threat. No no no. You can't go run that that fly out there So here's the thing. We got the shot jackson. Respect to the homie. I love that. I know he lawsuit right now. He know what. I'm talking about thirty four years. Old house the hammy like look. I love me some the shot. I love it. All in connection together as a collective but individually are question marks here and in bucky. I can't let you be debbie. Downer donald downer about this situation. Also you can't say winners and losers lose. Because last time i checked. Let's go to another sport in basketball. Kevin garnett member kevin garnett when he was in minnesota. And everybody's like oh man if he's so damn good if he topped him like. Everybody says he win losing in the first round every single year for like seven years and then he goes to boston and they do wiz all sudden. You can't stop people from call him a winner eerily similar to this situation not j. Didn't wanna talk about tom. Brady brady does come to mind. You look at the pittsburgh steelers a couple years ago when ben rothlisberger got hurt. That was a team all right. Eight nate be rothberg comes back they go eleven and twelve and four find themselves winning that division of berry tough division swapping out. A quarterback is a quick fix. It's not gonna fix all of you issues and nasty concern. I have with this offense. Okay so wait mill. You're gonna throw this. Kevin garnett analogy the same thing. We're kevin garnett went to boston. He went with two hall of famers. All the papers that matthew stafford is going with no doesn't have won the people around him that are going to upgrade it enter. Tj point did he talking about swapping out the quarterback when the number one number two. You know who was on offense number one and number two tiger tiger early officers player of the year though years when he was getting it done. That is a different. They don't have the engine they're really made this off as successful so the guy who has really it's not matthew stafford. Sean mcveigh if sean mcvay is the offense of wizard that we've anointed him to be within his one and find a way for this offense to go because you can't keep blaming all the pieces around him at some point we're gonna look at a guy with eliminated did. Maybe he's a fraud when it comes to when you look at it. Let's go back to the playoff game. Who started that playoff game around. Oh against seattle not let that lets. You know mcveigh was like i can get this done with anybody. Along in mcbain knows they don't have a true number one receiver in bucket. You know this all twelve. They don't lineup out why they're always condensed where we can get pressed. We can give three releases so it negates the need for a number one because mcveigh knows this what we'll put. Dj wide press him but cupping woods. We're going to align them tight lots of times when you lying tight condense splits you get off coverage free access makes it easy for my route running receivers. That's interesting right there. Tj starting to make me lean a little bit like. I shouldn't be asking circles. I'm an eternal optimist. But i just look at it right now. The defense won't be as good right so that puts pressure on offense to carry the low because they were number one last year. But now they're coordinators now. The chargers head coach. So you look at that situation what to do. You still got the players but you have the same play calling. So let's say the defense takes a step back. We noted officers. Take a step forward. Is that balancing act. What they're really trying to go with. Because i think sean mcvay with the weapons he has. This year is better than twenty second in scoring but also look at the difference. Say i don't know if you're going to go back to back. Number one defense is so it's just about how they're going to play the drop. You the number seven marcellus. What if they dropped the seven defensive. We didn't go up to thirteenth offensively..

"We can't even though we try. We still don't know the levels of competitiveness in this league it is a cutthroat league and it is a league in which there are no excuses and i think that matthew stafford finding got everything that he wants but they still have to do it. And i think that that's one of the reasons why he was reticent to go into those details so that fear the fear that matthew stafford has that leads to want to preserve every miniscule edge from a reporter. What does that suggest to you about. What will be watching in la when he gets under center in the biggest opportunity of his life. Well we don't know right but the stakes are big in june. I was at this event at so-fi stadium in inglewood which is going to be the site of the super bowl in february and the rams andbranch fans kind of have this idea of. Hey we're going to be this year's bucks right. We're going to import a new quarterback and we're gonna play the super bowl and win the super bowl in our home stadium and stafford in. Sean mcvay were there. As part of this event kevin frazier. The broadcaster brought them on stage. And in one point. Frazier said to them. He said bring us the rings man. We expect them and it was interesting. Because mcveigh stafford both sitting next to each other kind of smiled and looked down and then look back up but neither really said anything and there is nothing to say. There's only the season ahead. And that's the thing that i think. They both internalize no more than anything. You can import a flashy quarterback you pair him with this generational offensive mind but super bowls are not one in june. They're not one in august one over the course of the season. And the answer will unfold. This fall seth record sham our quarterbacks expert our new kabo san lucas correspondent. Thank you for joining us on. Espn thanks man. I'll call you from the pool. Please do and up next v creepiest college mascot in america might be exactly who you think. Goodyear believes in the power of moving forward. No matter if it's on the court the track or the fields movement makes us want to be more. It pushes us to go further to show the world what we can do. Movement has the unique ability to change our perspective to challenge us to work for a better tomorrow. Movement can even bring us together when we're still because if we're focused on the next move we don't have to worry about what's behind us goodyear more driven. Here's another story. I want you to know purdue. Pete was declared the creepiest college mascot in america this week according to a survey of roughly thirteen hundred people conducted by a company called quality logo products. And if you've never encountered purdue. Pete before purdue pete the mascot for the purdue boilermakers i just want you to close your eyes with me here for a second and just imagine because it's not just that produces a normal human body but with a ridiculously oversized head. That looks like woody from toy story. Wore a black construction helmet. Is that of a cowboy hat and carried around an actual sledgehammer. It's that purdue. Pete has judging by expression just caught doing something that he clearly thinks. You shouldn't be. His eyebrows are bent. Upwards in extreme judgment is themselves are these enormous swimming pools with the pupils intensely probably dangerously dilated and it all suggests that purdue pete is taken aback. Frankly the sheer site of you. He's scandalized by you. And actually in this encounter. He thinks you're the freak. But purdue pizza mouth. That thing tells a different story. His mouth is kind of faintly smiling. Like he's the mona lisa of west. Lafayette indiana with his lips closed but still conspicuously unstressed like this is not a grimace. He's wearing it is not a frown. His massive jaw and it is gigantic. It's kind of loose is giant chin cleft pretty tellingly. It's definitely unclenched. And so if you look closer in fact it honestly looks like purdue. Pete has seen this before now. Purdue pete might not want to admit that purdue. Pete might want to act like he's shocked and scandalised his eyebrows raised and everything but don't let those pupils fool. You perdue pete. He has seen some things done some things and now he's here the creepiest college mascot in america. So you might as well open your eyes at this point because what purdue pete has really wanted to see this entire time is you. I'm pablo torre and this has been. "And sean mcvay. In addition to having his heartbroken by having to relive this as he later told me was absolutely blown. Away at stafford's recall he could remember every play of that drive to go. Win the game and you can see. He's got a photographic memory from all the experiences and it usually when you're around these players you know whether it's matthew and even just talking to breeze a little bit when we were in kabo those guys they remember these plays. It's like an inventory where they just stored in their vault. I think that what sean mcvay wanted in his next quarterback with someone who he could look at it as a partner you could use all of that experience to help take pressure. Off of sean mcvay in the play calls. There's some quarterbacks who simply have in an eight creativity and you can call the perfect play. But that doesn't mean that that play is going to be executed. Well and one of the dirty little secrets that quarterbacks will only tell you off the record is the number of catastrophes that they have to manage for on any given play getting the snap. Diagnosing the defense and throw the ball accurately to the open. Receiver the stuff that we'd love them for. That's the bare minimum of the play. They have to know in their head. What offensive tackle or lineman can't block his man. What running back may run the wrong route. Which receiver can get open against a certain cornerback. And you have to do all of these things to manipulate the defense and account for all of these problems to find a way for the plate to succeed. That's what sean mcveigh was looking for a quarterback. There's so many things that you look at. What the quarterback position but your decision making your timing your accuracy the rhythm your ability when things do breakdown all schedule what does it look like having the ability to create on your own. And you know he was checking the boxes in a big way and that's one of the things he was most impressed with with matthew. Stafford is that matthew stafford is certainly no stranger to disaster and he watched him succeed time and time again in those moments that you know the game is kind of out of a coach's hands. Well we don't think of him as the type of quarterback that sean mcvay would look at it and say to himself. Oh thank god. I don't have to. Re defense is for him in the way that he had to do i. Eight jared goff. But the coaches knew that he was the type of player who could do that even fans didn't and i think that's one of the most interesting things about this once. Matthew stafford made it known that he wanted out of detroit and word got around the league. There was a lot of teams that were involved. The carolina panthers actually offered the best deal but he didn't want to go there and he didn't have a no trade clause in his contract. The lions wanted to send him to carolina. They could have his preferences. Were in order. The los angeles rams the san francisco forty niners. Who were so heartbroken by getting matthew. Stafford that i think that. That's one of the reasons why they ended up. Trading up to draft trae lance and the indianapolis colts but the rams were by far the leader in the clubhouse and you know i think the organization did him a real solid by trading him. There yeah so so this meeting in which their vibe ing out over this game that was a failure for mcveigh a win for stafford by the way because you mentioned it. It does seem like somewhere in the distance. I'm now imagining kirk cousins. Also heartbroken just like for many reasons from the pool maybe on the other side of the beach but that meeting pushes this deal forward. How how fast the things pick up. After that picked up really fast. It picked up really fast to the point. That even sean mcvay now has a hard time believing how fast it came together when learned. Matthew stafford was in kabul with him. He texted rams executives. You're not gonna f- and believe this but matthew stafford is here. After that meeting he was back to his phone. He's watching more cut ups on matthew stafford testing the patience of veronica his fiancee or perhaps investing in their mutual happiness. One could consider it and he wants matthew stafford and he gets on the phone with the owner. Stan kroenke the same owner who paid jerk off a ton of money right only a couple of years earlier explains why matthew stafford is. The guy that sean thinks will lead them to a super bowl. That was just explaining why felt like he would be a good fit. Talk a little bit about the time that we had spent together. And you know that. Trust them mr. Crockett makes you feel is is a big reason. Why you know feeling believed in feeling supportive is is why you wanna do everything in your power to make him right on some of the belief that he shown and you know matthew stafford was at dinner with some friends and his phone rang dinner and kottakal math. You've got a call got up. I didn't even realize he left the table again. We were there at the friends so just talking to them and he came over and he was like well. I guess in the night. After that the staffers got together with the mcveigh's and they toasted to their joint future. And is sean later. Told me things. Got pretty hazy. After that it was l. Congratulations to new ramble. Forward to a lot of fun. And let's enjoy this night and then There was a lot of phone calls and tax and different things like that. Some of which are very clear others that got a little bit hazier later in the night. I mean you described so many of these behind the scenes intimate details through your reporting that almost mask the fact that matthew stafford when you confront him directly about the nuances the details of the craft of quarterbacking which you as a reporter know as well as anybody. He is not helpful to you right. Like how would you describe his wariness. How would you describe how that personality honestly might mesh with the setting of one of the largest media market in the league with paparazzi and media members crawling hoping for details all the time. Yeah it was annoying to be honest with you know people close to matthew had been like you know. He's so much more of a thinker in a transition in you know so much more about the craft than anybody ever asked him about. So i get there. And i'm asking him about the craft. I'm asking him about his thinking. I'm trying to get a window into his inner peyton manning and he will just not go there he can see the irritation on my face and was kind of sorry but really not sorry he would go off the record though in describe challenges for him or things that he was seeing or things that he was struggling with that he didn't want out there and it kind of hit me that you know. I don't think that matthew is trying to be difficult. I don't think that he needed a drink in him as someone close to him. Said you might want to get a couple of drinks in them and then interview honestly a great journalistic approach pretty much every scenario. Exactly i think he. He's got a lot of expectations on his shoulders and he hasn't done it. Let's face it. I mean as great as he has been at times. It's debatable whether he's truly a top five quarterback right and i think that he wants to be tested on the biggest stage and prove to himself that he can do it in those moments and in the context of that i totally understood why he was reticent to give specifics to a lot of questions because you know that stuff matters. I mean peyton. Manning would get mad at his receivers for sharing details of audibles years after he used the game..

"So the twenty twenty season has come to an end for matthew stafford and the detroit lions and now. He's considering seriously getting out of there. How did that day unfold. So the lion season ended with a loss to the vikings that was similar to many losses during matthew stafford's career in which both played well throwing three touchdowns and came up. Just short stafford throws incomplete. Vikings finished with a win seven consecutive win over the detroit. Lions misfired on a two point conversion. That would have tied the game after the game. He decided that he wanted out and he told kelly that he wanted out and he was going to ask the lions for trade but the next morning he was already going back on it. Kelly walked into the kitchen and he was emptying dishwasher. He was very quiet. We talked about the nine for but we one hundred percent sure and he was pretty quiet and for matthew. You can tell his overall mood when he's just not saying much. Even around was having this conversation with themselves where he was reconsidering maybe deciding that he could gut through another year but when he left that morning to go back to the facility he asked kelly to say a little prayer for him He's just kind of silent and right before he left. He was like all right. Well you know wish we locked say for me and he met with the lions brass for many hours cried during that meeting i wanted to. I wanted to make sure that whatever happened to me. The lions got something in return for it as well. One of the best for both of us. And i felt at that point. The best thing for both of us was to seek a trait in and try to get as much as they could for me the semi to a place that i could hopefully succeed in and he came home knowing that he was entering his final couple weeks as a detroit lion and he was nervous about it and after a couple of weeks kelly said look. We gotta get outta here. I told matthew he was stressing out. Obviously there was a lot of stuff going on this point and we need to get away anyway. We need to get out of the country. I don't care where way from football so they ended up going to kabo and usually what happens in kabo stays in kabul but as i've learned in talking with stafford and with sean mcveigh they cannot stop talking about what happened in the kaaba. Is this locus of really. Nfl power as it turned out over this off season because there is matthew stafford. there is rams offensive. Tackle andrew whitworth a friend of matthews. Who's also on vacation. They're coincidentally and then they're also is. Sean mcveigh just randomly vacationing. It feels like skulduggery. I'll be honest with the year. It all feels like this could not have possibly been accidental but pullback veil for us on this vacation what was happening. How do you see that. It was accidental and drew. Brees was down there to kyle. Shanahan was down there to thinking that he might get involved in the matthew. Stafford kabo is just a place where. Nfl players sort of know together and possibly make moves habit. I've always thought that you get the best. Nfl gossip from being at the bar at the combine late or being at the hotel bar during nfl owners meeting up. I'm going to ask our bosses for two weeks. And i'm just going to go to the pool and see who rolls up you know. What of all the expense report schemes. I have heard throughout the years. That might be the greatest thou boone. Matthew landed there and he texted his friend. Andrew whitworth who also just happens to be the ran's offensive tackle We landed got to the hotel. And i told them. We're saying that the place where staying at and if he was anywhere close we could try and hook up plays golf. I think it takes me back like yeah. I'm at the pool. Andrew whitworth tech. Sean mcveigh to tell him that. Matthew stafford's there and matthew stafford's been in kabul less than an hour they all congress and magic happens. Shana said not too far over there. Probably watching tape or something on his on his phone but he was close by stafford. In sean mcvay just start talking intensely and kelly stafford didn't even realize that was sean mcveigh. She just thought that he looked so young. That he must have just been a friend of of ranger whitworth. I mean new sean. I didn't really know what he looked like. At this point. I was talking to his fiancee. I was like so. How do you guys each other. And she was like. Oh will my fiance coaches andrew. Like oh so so. They all are hanging out here around this pool. How quickly does it take for this trade to get orchestrated well. So mcveigh had heard that stafford wanted out and it was very quiet. One of the things that matthew stafford wanted he didn't wanna play the league game with the lions and so they both promised to keep this thing under the radar. The forty niners knew that stafford wanted out mcveigh had heard that stafford wanted out and it actually watched cut ups of him on his phone before this and they get to talking and mcvay brings up this game from two thousand sixteen. It was week seven. Sean mcveigh is the precocious. He's always precocious especially precocious offense coordinator for washington. And they're.

"What was that adjustment like him. I think it was horrible. One of the things we discussed was you know. The mental gymnastics required to manufacture hope. It was really kind of fascinating. Kelly stafford at one point told me his wife. Kelly yeah wife. Kelly told me that it's not just at the beginning of each season. It sometimes can be getting you through the week getting you through the press conference when simply aren't sure that you guys have the horses to compete in the nfl. He would have to be the guy who always positive. Always trying to keep guys. Aren't we can do this. let's go let's go and i could imagine after continuing not to. You know win those games that gets hard and that gets repetitive. Matthew just talked about you know blocking out the expectations blocking out the coaches blocking out any problems and thinking about his teammates and the people in the huddle with him and how they're counting on him to perform and how he didn't want to let them down before each season he would get to a place where he'd have her convinced that they were going to go to the super bowl believed it. Oh he expected to win it every season. You think like after years and years of literally putting everything on the line and not accomplishing what you want that mentality change but it never did it really. Didn't i asked him. What's it like to be at home and watch the playoffs. And watch these other. Quarterbacks author their own legends. Do you watch it. And he said yeah. I do watch it and it was horrible. And he's acutely aware of the perception of his career and that's of someone who puts up a ton yards. I for a lot of touchdowns occasionally commits the momentum altering turnover but more than anything. Isn't there playing in late. January and early february as we've become accustomed to watching the great quarterbacks do and so with apologies due apologies to bobby lane i suppose stafford is arguably the greatest quarterback the lines of ever had right seth i mean he leads the franchise and wins in touchdown passes in passing yards. Those are seemingly reasons. why. Sean mcveigh might be hopeful. He do better under his system. What has mcvay been seeing in matthew stafford. Well i think that sean mcveigh is a very ambitious coach. That's no surprise. He's accomplished a lot for what he's done it as coaching career. But i think that one of the things of the offseason that we've seen with matthew stafford with the forty niners trading up draft trae. Lance is the limits of what you can do with a very good quarterback version a transcendent one and i think that towards the end of last season. Obviously there are some problems between the coaching staff. And jared goff. That's been well documented in. It left mcveigh open to the idea of an upgrade and set just to clarify what that was about it. Was this idea that sean mcvay is the boy genius coach right leg. One of the offensive wizards of the modern. Nfl and he had this toy it almost sounded. Like sometimes jared goff his guy that he could control to do whatever he wanted and then in the last couple seasons in l. a. That toys just seemed to break. It's a thin line. I mean jared goff did not play well in that super bowl against new england and still. He threw a pass down the sideline midway through the fourth quarter. To brandin cooks. Cook would have been a touchdown pass or if they had called pass interference on it which could have done also the rams tied game and who knows how the game ends instead. Jared goff through the same pass on the next play and it was intercepted smart defensive coordinators around. The nfl realized that jared goff a good player but he didn't quite re defenses as well as the best quarterbacks in the nfl did. And the sean mcvay called plays designed to read the defense for him And there are limits to how successful you can be in quarterbacks game when that's your best chance and i think that one of the themes i get into the story that i spoke about with coach mcveigh. Is you know what can a truly great quarterback do. I think that when matthew stafford was drafted by detroit people thought he is the guy who is going to lead us to the promised land. He's gonna take us to a super bowl as it turns out in detroit. He learned the limits of what his ability could transcend and now in los angeles. They're counting on those abilities to push them over the top and win a super bowl.

"Like the rams were the fit for us looking at it. In the short term there it was. It was really exciting. Space on the recent past success you know. It had been a bunch of years in the playoffs. A bunch of years with winning records once the trade happened and it was decided that i was going to be there. I wanted to make sure that. I was pulling my weight when the los angeles rams created for matthew stafford this off season. They handed one of the. Nfl's biggest arms to one of its biggest brains head. coach sean. Mcvay and while stafford in detroit was pretty easy to overlook on account of the general awfulness of lions. There is no ignoring the quarterback. Now not in hollywood not win nothing short of a super bowl which will be hosted in. La this postseason would disappoint today. Seth witter sham takes us behind the scenes of how the stafford trade went down. Would it all says about quarterbacks in the modern era in how kabo apparently is the nexus of power in the nfl. Pablo torre. it's wednesday. August twenty fifth. This is espn daily seth. I've summoned you here today. Because you've written this cover story on matthew stafford who i have now learned likes to be called matthew and not mad. A mistake i've been making for years and years now and it got me thinking that i really don't understand anything actually about matthew stafford or is interior monologue. What he's actually like. But you do because you spent all this time with him and his wife and his new coach. Sean mcveigh what did you learn about. Who matthew stafford is prepared to take over this franchise as the new star in. La matthew stafford is in a lot of ways. The most famous lease known quarterback. In the nfl seth wicker shammas covered the nfl for espn for twenty years. And he's kind of been in this relevant franchise his entire career. The only way it could have been worse if he had been drafted by the jets. And i think there's a lot of football fans who have never seen matthew stafford in his twelve years in the nfl. Play a complete game. No not because of injuries. Even though he has had his share but because he plays in a franchise that is never on primetime television except for thanksgiving and at one point. I asked him. What do you want out of the rest of your career. And i found his answer to be very earnest in humbling. I just want to be successful in know those teams. You really remember those teams that have success get to make runs and and you know whether it's playoff runs bruhns all that but I play this game to try and win super bowls and That's that's what i wanna do. I would love to Have the opportunity to play in that game. Many times possibly can from here on out. You know you think about all the quarterbacks who have authored their legends in the twelve years since matthew stafford has been the nfl with these big playoff moments in he has none of them he doesn't have a signature play And i think that he's very aware where he is in his career in. It's one of the reasons why he wanted out of detroit. You ask him at one. Point piece seth you talked to him and mcvay about the sheer number of prime time games. That are gonna be on television for the rams. It reminds me about something that i don't really ever think about either. Which is that timeslot for. Nfl teams not all of these things are created equal and the rams are going to be very much in the spotlight this season. They're not only going to be in the spotlight. But they're going to be under pressure. Because matthew stafford went to the los angeles rams engineered a trade there for one reason and that's to play in a super bowl and sean mcveigh wagered. His coaching career on another quarterback the second time couple years now for the chance to win a super bowl and so they're not only going to be on prime time. They're going to be expected to perform on primetime. Yeah in your piece. Seth you walk down this metaphorical memory lane with matthew stafford. And it's a ballroom in suburban los angeles. He's doing the thing that all famous quarterbacks do at some point where he signs like a million pieces of memorabilia and you realize that this is him walking you through his football life. What was walking down that memory lane like it was really interesting. So i got to this hotel north of los angeles and i walk into this ballroom and there are just rows and rows and rows of memorabilia and i walk up to stafford and as i got to him. He was signing university of georgia. Memorabilia we got to talk about his time in georgia where he started for three years and left georgia known as a winner. Someone who had performed well in bowl games. And then he goes. I overall to the lions they were the first winless team in the modern. Nfl history they were owen. Sixteen team right. you know. He got to detroit win. The city was at its lowest in two thousand nine during the great recession. And i think that he took a lot of pride in his dream of delivering that franchise a super bowl. He showed some promises. a rookie. had a great one of the most memorable games ever on. Nfl films where he blew out shoulder. And through his fifth and game winning touchdown pass as time expired. Wanna be somewhere to go down on. The field is not getting up early on the ground. And hearing the time. I'll call for some reason in my head that clicked it. I had a chance to come back in the game. I you know the kind of moment that showed promise that showed that he was not only going to deliver as a number one pick but that he was a special number one pick and he ended up leading the lions to three playoff games. Didn't win any of them but they were kind of spread out in sprinkled throughout his career. And i don't think the lions were ever able to get anything going. Yeah oh hold on a second year. Because the lion seth. They've never made a super bowl ever so it's not entirely matthew stafford's fault it's safe to say on that front but the thing about matthew stafford that makes people think that he can be this savior type figure. Let's be very honest about it. Is his arm. Stafford beautiful sites staffer. How would you describe his arm. And what makes that thing special. You know. I think that everything. That patrick mahomes get celebrated for now throwing off platform the indifference to stepping into passes shifting his arm to different angles. Depending on what windows are open. Matthew stafford has been doing for twelve years and a lot of people. Just don't notice it because we didn't see it. We did see in that way not that often. No matthew stafford is the type of wondrous arm. That's allowed him to problem. Solve at a high level. That's a gift. That's exclusive to the great arms. The ball just looks differently coming out of their hand. And that's the type of thing that matthew stafford has had his entire career. He's always had that blessed arm. And the lion. Seth i mean they were blessed to have that arm for as long as they did. I mean this is the franchise that is most famous for early. Retirements of it superstars right. I mean this is barry. Sanders retiring famously. Early calvin johnson going to do the same and stafford. I think was the guy they hoped would survive the whole lions experience. But he's also the guy who was this quintessential winter at georgia as you say so him becoming the face of a quintessential loser..

"Work from home you know but but on the positive side. I got to see my boys do a lot a lot of new things. You know my kids. You know a lot of new things that i usually don't get to see because i'm here at the building and so my my kids like it so now that i'm here all day at camp against camps getting normal. They're like daddy ever gonna come home again. You know so That part is hard. But you know the fact that it's starting to get more normal a little bit. It was at least in nevada. go finally go to restaurants. We got to go to vegas night's game and take my boys so i got to experience hockey and now they wanna play hockey and so i know nothing about it but that's one thing that's been nice about cova kinda going away but still i mean we're six feet apart. You haven't seen you in two years. So i wanted to give you a hug and say what's up. It's just it's just weird you know you've had a really interesting last couple of years because in football since you've started both seasons really hot and it tailed off and then you've also moved to vegas. What has all of this turmoil been like in a football sense in football cents. It just hasn't been good enough. You know we we start hot and and we're six to you know or whatever it was and pregnant here. We go like this is awesome. Were doing it. And then it tails off next year. Same thing six and two and it tells off the one thing i can say and you know me. I'm a super positive guy. Is you know. I remember two years ago. We're in denver. Last game of the year we threw a touchdown for two hundred zero. And we go for two and balls batted down right on the left side or on the goal line. This year this past year we go to denver. We go down. Just jacobs run in. We go for to same exact throw same exact area the field and i throw it and we complete it and i and i looked at grew. I said we got better this year. And he he obviously try and keep him positive you'll keep and he's like you know what you're right and we laughed about it at the same time. It's just it just hasn't been good enough. I think grew said. I'd give it a c. You know we've done some very productive things. I feel like i'm playing the best football of my career These last couple of years but none of that matters unless we win and You know gus. And the new jahic and the new defensive guys casey that we've added. I think we have a chance to do that. But we gotta go prove it. Do you really live like right next to grew to yes like there's one guy in the middle of so i feel bad for him when we're yelling at each other but yeah there's one guy in the middle back can literally my boys you walk out my front door. We can see each other and wave. I see cindy mrs gruden. Every you know every so often you know riding by or we're playing at the park with the kids and grew will stop and talk to the kids. It's awesome but yeah we we. We live right next to each other. What did you say when you found out that one of your teammates trusted teammate is gay now understanding what a religious person you are and i really was curious about your interaction. Yup after basically the news. yeah. I think I asked you know there was. Some people are trying to ask my opinion. And just trying to create a buzz because of that and that to me was like come on man you know. What are you trying to do with that then. Someone finally asked me. And i answered them. You know and i told him. I said we live in a country. Now where if you disagree with someone. People automatically think you're supposed to hate each other. And i'm like that couldn't be farther from the truth. You know what i'm saying..

"My thanks to matthew stafford. Now let's go up the coast to santa clara Where i spend a day with the forty niners and let's hear from a guy who's a very compelling story also this year forty niners quarterback jimmy garoppolo so here in santa clara. Jimmy garoppolo so jimmy. I've got to ask you said on that. Fateful friday in march. When you got a phone call i guess either from kyle shannon john lynch. Hey look we may speak trade. We might take a quarterback was the thought that went through your mind right at that moment you know. Initially there's lots to process the take in You know no one ever wants to get that call but then the reality set in and it was kind of You know. Let's go play football. And i remember talking to john and i asked him the first thing i asked him. I said am. I still going to get a chance to compete for the job. And he said yeah. That's absolute no problem. And that's really all. I could ask for being a player. And so it's gotta be a little bit of a blow to your ego that you get hurt on total freak injury last year and it ruins another season for you. So have you pounded the walls much. What what is it been like mentally for you. I mean we're dealing with the injury and everything the ones that you can't control really. Are there upsetting. Because you know you put it in all this work out here in the off season to prevent things like that and you know freak. Things happened in this league. May i got rolled up on by linemen and you know it is what it is type of thing but at the end of the day You know i'm out here compete with my friends and my teammates. And that's all i can really ask for. I mean it's You know you don't opportunities at this thing so you got to take advantage and do it's gotta be an odd situation first of all. But i've asked a few people around here. What is it like in the quarterback room and everybody has told me and who knows. I'm not in there but everybody is told me that. Maybe you have been like really welcoming to trae lands and really kind of good to what's been your attitude about that you know. It's aw picked anyone you know anyone could bench shoes. The jay was the one that got selected and so it's You don't wanna have any weird feelings towards him or take it out on him. it's i know he's not the one making the decisions at the end of the day. So it's Yeah i welcome with open arms. Try to just be myself and let it happen. Organically and i think it's It's been good for both of us. You know he brings a little youth little energy. Qb room and whatever. I can do to help you know if he asked or anything like that. I'm willing is it weird to be the veteran. Who's kind of you know. The kid is looking to very very moi twenty nine but i i don't know in this league twenty nine. You're getting on the older end of it. And i've been around for a little while seen some things and so it's I've been on both ends of it now and so it's It's coming full circle but know it's it's right where i wanna be at the end of the day. This is where. I want to be playing football out of competing and then we'll see what happens. I asked john lynch how it's going with you and all the quarterbacks and he goes jimmy is the kind of guy who has responded to this very well. He said i think the competition is made him have his best off season and best camp. Do you feel that way You know i think subconsciously. I think it's there. I you know every offseason try to improve things that you know. I i see as a weakness of mine and you. You're always approach it kinda the same way but Yeah whenever something like this happens. I think in your subconscious whether you're thinking about it or not it's there. I mean you know the reality of it and i mean if you're gonna lay it up for competition. I'm ready for that in the off season whether maybe it was your dad somebody who played with a prior coach. Whatever is there anybody who you felt. You helped you deal with the reality of your new life I think having been around the league. I've seen it before you know you're seeing it in other positions guys who you're friends with go through the same thing and it's It's weird seeing it but then once you it just i don't know it happens very quickly and I don't know. I didn't want to be fake about anything. I didn't lie. Be not me. I just wanted to be myself and let things happen as they may. It's i welcome competition if someone's trying to do that and so be it. I mean that's what we're out your competing every day whether this situations here not so. It's one of those things. I'm just going to be myself. And now let the chips fall as they may. The last thing about this particular thing is when you go from thinking that you have found your home for the next ten or fifteen years and now knowing that you still could but knowing that probably it's more likely than at some point you're going gonna play somewhere else. How big of a blow is that. And how have you managed that over the last few months Honestly i this conversation with a couple of people. I'm one of those guys that i literally live in the moment. Take it day by day. Don't own a house rent. And so i'm. I'm really an in the moment kind of person so this happened. I can remember my brothers. Were asking me a million questions and all you're gonna do this. You're going to do that. And i was like you know. We'll see what happens type of thing. And so i don't know as crazy sound. It's actually worked out pretty well for me and put me in a good mindset here every day and yes kind of our role so three things about the present you know last year. You guys had sort of a bitter disappointment early on when you had so many injuries on your trip to new jersey against the giants and the jets and i wondered. Do you come into this season. Feeling like you've got a chance to be the great team you were in twenty nineteen honestly..

"I'm it's definitely more fun to win absolutely Had some great seasons there where we were successful and That's as much as you can have playing football You know it's tough to lose. Everybody knows that You know for me. It wasn't so much that is it was just kind of knowing where the organization was going. It was going through. A you know a big change with the new head coach. New general manager is going to be a lot of new players as well. And i just felt like the timing was right Was well within their rights. To tell me that it wasn't. I would have understood but Just really appreciate them for at least entertaining the idea and then obviously going through and you know together kind of making that happen but it's It's something that you know as a player you want be a you. Don't want to be a champ. You wanna have you know chances at it and You know luckily they were They were great and sent me to a place. That's got you know. A bunch of great players in a bunch of recent success does any part of you feel like regardless of whose fault it was that i let them down. They're definitely you know. I sit there and go man. I wish i could have gotten it done. You know i mean it would have been amazing to You know have a super bowl parade down woodward avenue in detroit. I mean i would've loved that Didn't happen and it's tough to swallow a competitor and somebody who touches the ball on every single offense at play for the for the for the lion so Yeah you definitely look back in and Wish he'd done a few things different there and some games that may changed outcomes. The seasons but You know i'm i'm focused. Completely forward now. Feel great where i am just trying to do everything i can to learn this offense and You know move forward with the team. That's i'm extremely excited to be on. What does a quarterback thing when he looks at the landscape and looks at a coach. Sean mcveigh over the last few years. Have you watched much of the rams. What have you heard borrowed him. And what has been the reality. Yeah you know. I didn't have any really you know preconceived Feelings just in passing you know not not not great but Obviously i had a lot of respect for what he's been able to do it a really young age to be able to command a room. Committed team and organization at a young age is something that's really tough and You know obviously had a ton of success with his offense as defense has been playing great for years as well so You know it was. It was something that you know when it finally went through. I was extremely excited to get the opportunity with the guy. That's the smartest. He is and his charismatic. and you know has a grasp on leadership All that is Is something that's really enticing for quarterback. Let's talk about football. I second take me into learning this offense and why you think for you. It's a good fit. Yeah i mean it's You know it's very complex. You know but at the same time it all makes sense. You know quite a bit to it I'm doing everything. I can to make sure that i'm diving into it and getting as comfortable as i can as quickly as i possibly can As far as fits me. I think Private most quarterbacks. To tell you the truth it's a it's a really good offense and and i'm excited to just keep working hard and try and bring it to life when you look at where this franchises right now. Particularly with the defense you stare across the line and see aaron donald. So what are your hopes playing on a complete team like this You know. I hope that every day we come here we we We make each other better. You know i'm throwing passes to cooper cup who's guarded by jalen ramsey and and Like you said aaron. Donald russian passer. We got andrew whitworth blocking it's really cool to To be on the same team as those guys. And i'm just trying to make sure that i do my part so that you know in the end we can be. We want to be to other sort of mental questions. I wonder after. Somebody's been a place for a long time. You were in detroit for twelve years. What is it like going to a new place and do you try to. Are you a little bit. Careful in trying to assert yourself too early. Explain how all that works. Everything was new Every person i interacted with was the first time interaction and and Trying to figure out who does what you know. Familiarize faces and names and all that kind of stuff so that's a big challenge You know as far as putting myself to be honest with the. I'm just trying to be myself the same guy. I've always been the same player trying to get better but just be myself as a personality and and You know there's times where it's time for me to step up and speak and there's times for you know i need to listen so i'm just trying to Be the best in that role that i can be. Did you watch the super bowl this year. Did you watch brady. I did yeah. So he's forty three years old going to be forty four this year. What's your thought watching a guy like him. Still do it at age forty three. It's pretty remarkable to be honest. I mean The way he's able to take care of his body but then also just You know willis teams to two wins. You know he's He's done a heck of a job in doing it for forever and and who knows guy might play forever and we don't know last thing football you know you make a great living from it and you know watching you over the years. It seems like the most fun times. You've had our late in the fourth quarter. Big games winning a big game. And i wonder when you think about the fun of playing football. He think that's going to be rekindled here with the rams Yeah i mean. I don't think i ever lost it. You know. I love playing game. I love competing You know being in those big moments late in games being played in big games planning playoff games. That's that's what you play this game for You know you live for those moments. Those and hopefully i got a bunch of opportunities at those While i'm here and and make the most of them to me. It's just when i look at your career. It's just shocking. You haven't played lead into january. And i bet for you whether it's shocking or not. It's gotta be. Oh my god. I really wanna do that. Yeah absolutely that's that's the that's the goal and that's why i'm here and and hopefully we make it happen. Hey listen appreciate a good last year. yeah sports. Are.

"About Fabio. He's gotta win this year. So he'll probably have some influence in there. He might be going. Hey, you know, we need to make a trade for Matthew Stafford, or to Shawn Watson, because if they if they have another year Like they just had he's gone. If if you're going to stay the course, which you have just suggested, might be the most likely course for George Payton to take and then try to rebuild developed, you know, draft and developing Get more good players and so forth. And so on, then you have to Come have come to the conclusion. That With the same coaching staff. And arguably the same system. And the same quarterback. And pretty much the same offense of players. That you're not going to be 30 seconds in turnovers that that was just a blip on the screen of youthfulness. Next year. You're going to cut that number in half that you're gonna be middle of the pack in turnovers or a little bit better. You have to have come to that conclusion. And I The only way you come to that conclusion is to say same coaches. Same system, same quarterback. But drew lock they're going to coach him a little bit better. Andrew's going to be more mature and his decision making is going to improve dramatically. Just because it's another year in the league. You have to think that he's got a shot to take that next step. Like Josh Alan did After his rookie year. And also Factor in the injuries. We're not gonna have another year like we just had with injuries. And let's see what he can do. And if it doesn't work, George Peyton's got nothing to lose. Josh Allen improved from year one to your three What They changed offensive coordinators. They got Stefan digs. They added some pieces and it's a different system. Yeah. Mind. I'm saying you're.

"Going to stick around, even if they hired enemies, he's still going to be difficult. I think they'll go with whoever they think the best candidates. It might be Eric the enemy, but it might be Jim Caldwell. Or it might even be Matty before. I don't understand what's going on with this Josh McCown thing. I have no I mean, you are talking about the ultimate Middle finger to watch. And, hey, we're gonna hire a head coach who's never been a coach ever at any level, so I don't even understand what that is. But I think it's kind of chicken and egg right now, Peter, where even if you have if you don't love Eric, the enemy. You can't hire him just a piece of quarterback who still wants out. If you do want to play chicken here and say we're gonna hire because we think this is going to matter then you do hire him. And if you like him, then it doesn't matter anyway. You should've hired him already. Sure. So let me ask you a hypothetical then if it is unsalvageable, and we're past repair and Sean walks, and they part ways is somebody like Matthew Stafford, someone that you view as a possible good fit down in Houston. No. And here's why, Because Matthew Stafford is okay. First and foremost to Shawn has a no trade clause. And so he can decide whether or not he wants to go somewhere, So it's gotta be. You know, I just have to mention that first Matthew Stafford, I think could end up in the division. But it would be if the cold, so they the entire thing is a team who really understands. They can't get a young quarterback. They need a quarterback gonna win. Now They're the ones who are gonna be targeting. And the Texans. I believe Be state. If they move, Watson. Frankly, they're going to get better faster because they're gonna have so many pics. So I think you'll see the text and look for either a guy like to look coming back, stamped Arnold coming back. They're locking on Zach Wilson or or Justin Fields or Trey land, So no, I don't think that I don't think the Texans will be involved in that the staff but I do think he could end up in their division. So we got Matthew Stafford to Shawn Watson. Future mega church and little finger. I figured like we hit it all today, Lance, I appreciate it. I think we've hit just, um Yeah, I think we've hit every segment of pop culture. You can possibly it. I think so. We have done it his lancer line. 97 5 in Houston, My man.
