Myanmar soldiers confess for first time to mass killings, rapings of Rohingya

"First time members of Myanmar's military have openly confess to slaughtering members of the country's Rohingya Muslim minority to soldiers have admitted to killing dozens of civilians in 2017 and burying them in mass graves. The soldiers deserted the military and are now being held at the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands, one of the man private meal win, Tune said in his video confession. That his superiors told him to shoot all you see, and all you hear, including Children and Amy and get confusing. My general in his actions were part of a scorched earth campaign when Myanmar security forces for some 750,000 Rohingya from their homes into Bangladesh. Matthew Smith from the Thailand based Human Rights group. Fortify Rights has analyzed the video confessions. Matthew these air, really stunning toe Watch. What are the most explosive admissions? We here In these videos? Both of the soldiers in these phoned confession's admit to killing upwards of 180 civilians between the two of them. That's men, women and Children. Both of these soldiers were operational into different areas of northern Rick Kind state at the same time, and the fact that they both were given orders to Qilong Rohingya or exterminate all Rohingya. Essentially they were given orders to commit genocide in the fact that they were in two separate areas at the same time would indicate some coordination at the higher levels of the Myanmar army. There's also the issue of rape and sexual violence, You know, in one village called Jet Jochen, we knew there was a tremendous amount of rape and sexual violence committed by members of military against Rohingya. And one of these soldiers on an intern was operational in jet Yo pin while this rape was taking place, and he confesses to standing guard, while superior officers raped several running a women You've analyzes confessions. We can't independently verify their authentic. Why do you think they're credible? Essentially everything that these two men share in the testimonies can be corroborated or already has been corroborated by Our previous human rights documentation as well as the U. N fact finding mission and others and these two men appeared on the Bangladesh border presented themselves to Bangladesh authorities seeking protection confessing their crimes further. Yeah, That's also an interesting part of the story. How these confessions happen. They just appear together on the border at Bangladesh told their stories offered names and ranks of 19 of their superiors who say they gave the orders for war crimes. That seems like a really risky move on their part. So why did they do it? Do you know what motivated them? I want to believe that they were motivated by a desire for justice by desire for the truth and a desire for the BMR military to be held accountable for its actions. I think it's also noteworthy that both of these soldiers come from ethnic minority groups and for a very long time, we've know that some pretty at times brutal discrimination takes place within the ranks of the medium or military itself. I mean, I think of Aunt Song Suki, Myanmar's most public politician, She's artfully dodged the allegations of genocide. How can the Nobel Peace Prize laureate possibly walk away from this body of testimony? In many ways, her credibility internationally in shot. She has become a mouthpiece in many ways for the Myanmar military. She's doing the work of the military in denying that these atrocities had taken place. The Rohingya that you're in touch with Matthew how they reacted to these confession videos. Many people in the community are very hopeful. Right now. This is a moment that a lot of people for a very long time we're telling the writing of people this would never happen. A lot of people were dashing the hopes of the community saying, You know, The Hague is too far away from me, Amar. The military is immune from this type of accountability. And I think today a many Rohingya have expressed quite a lot of hope for justice and accountability. Think the people that I'm speaking with running in the camps and wrangle were in Yangon right now and elsewhere in various countries in the world? They know this isn't a silver bullet. They know this is not the answer, but they do recognize that this is a tremendous blow to Myanmar's denials.

"And for me this This movie more than anything is going to be a celebration of Star Trek and I encourage everyone to go out and participate in it as well. Cool well I know that William Shatner is GonNa be at comic con doing a Star Trek panel so I certainly hope. You guys connected. He shows up on your red carpet would be just about awesome to see the two kirks together. I think that would be great. That'd be cool I I. I have a dream that you know. Maybe he might recognize me and say. Hey you might have been able to Punch Chris. Pine but you'd never be able to punch this Kirk. I gotta I gotTa ask you the casting. What was that like for the first film for you? It was very unexpected. I didn't even really know what I was auditioning for. My agent kind of hinted that it was star Trek but it was a black ops Casting sort of process I didn't script until I went in all the characters. Names have been changed. I think mine was like farm. Boy You know number winder something and and You know they had all these different names in once I got cast fam- out you know what it actually was and I remember telling my my mother. She was huge star trek film Fan and I said A Mom I'm doing star Trek and she was like now she. She freaked out. There's not there's no better experience than to freak out your mom maker so happy and my uncle to is. He's a huge Star Trek Fan. He Has. He has a model enterprise in his Kitchen sits on his table. A real model enterprise out there. I got a few of these is his is like the big one you know. They're like giant one. Yeah I built one of those. When I was a kid he loved those. Yeah I think I think he built his two is like a modeling type of thing but You know it's it's I don't I don't even remember what we're what the question was. But you know as far as the casting process right so so yeah I mean I. I auditioned on on tape. They send it off to. Jj came back a week later and said you got the part and then we started work it was and I would never in a million years thought that I would be able to do. Three fell three films. You now three star trek films as a redshirt. I think that's gotta be some kind of a record. I mean I don't know if Guinness Burke would officiated or something but I it's gotta be some kind of a record. Do don't die. Don't die man. Those redshirts man. I gotta ask you about six savior. When is that coming out? And what are you playing that? Actually six gun saviors. It's It's kind of a B. movie but it came out Some friends of mine who produced in acted in the film as well. I met them at a at. What was it the Sunscreen Film Festival and Florida Tampa Florida and she? She had asked me to do a part in her film. And it's it really is a cool film. It's it's when you watch it you can get it on Amazon Right now and it never really went to theaters is. It was never supposed to be that really. I think it played in theaters though. Now I think about it for a little bit but it was It was more a labor of love for everybody who is involved in it and they're all hardcore sci-fi fantasy fans and Frank Zeta who's one of the producers on? It is a good friend of mine as well. He is a huge. He's huge in the sci-fi and has actually Written books and he just created a game is his his guy. That's been to all the conventions and he kept telling me you. GotTa do a convention. You GotTa do a convention and So finally I was like wow okay. I'll give it a shot then But that's how I got involved with six gun savior. It's kind of about It's a supernatural western. Where this team? This kind of collage of people get together in the old west and they are fighting zombies and demons and It's a cool fill USA. You should check it out. Yeah it's got a cool factor to it. I love it. Sounds Great. Sounds Fun Sound? Well lastly your midwest kind of guy I mean. That's what you grew up in everything. Indiana and I mean it really in the Star of the millennium you just moved out to La. I mean that takes a lot of guts as far as I'm concerned. Well you know as an actor. I am from the Midwest. I grew up in Indiana Ohio and Michigan. I spent the most time in Ohio in Cincinnati about twelve years from twelve to twenty four. My real formative years but as an actor. I did my first film. If you've seen my. Imdb credits was a movie called airborne. And that starts. Seth Green Jack Black and a couple of other people who have kind of gone away after you know the through the years but It was for me. I was just a a kid in school at the time they the casting director came in and I don't know how I ended up getting a part in it and I was only supposed to work one day. They ended up taking away. My Line and had me worked for a month and a half you know had at scales. Those it was really. It was an unbelievably cool experience. But then I went to school and trained Got My BFA enacting got my MFA in acting and then and then there's two choices at that point once you graduate you can either go to New York or you can go to La on and for me you know if all things are equal. I'd rather be where the weather's a little better you know and and La really is more of a film and TV kind of town and you know the New York New York. Has the you know plays and musicals and they have. Tv shows movies as well. But it's it's just not as much as much opportunity as there is in In La in my opinion my humble opinion. Well I really WanNa thank you for taking the time and talking to us here. I mean I wish you. The Best of luck with Star Trek beyond as a longtime fan of Ozzy rooting for the film and Anything Star Trek and now Zee TV series. Coming up with an all star behind the scenes group so. I'd love Jason or Jj to direct and episode. I think that'd be cool. I'd love to be a part of that series so if anybody's watching it I want to be in on that. Yeah well well. You were in You were in Star Trek Renegades Tim Rice. Yeah that's awesome. I did yet again. I did a doubt again was A favor that I did for Francs Anka who was the unit Producer of renegades. Yeah that was very cool. And that was a fan film actually and You know the the studios just came down pretty hard on the Fan Jones out. I wasn't a part of the next renegades. That's coming out but they I've been told that they've had to remove all the Star Trek Logos In Post the what a horrific job that's going to be the try to remove all the insignias all the references. And you know it's crazy but yeah. That was fun. I I you know I. I'm definitely going to encourage all of your viewers and listeners. To Go see beyond I'm going to put a guarantee that it's going to be the best film of the summer all right well strong recommendation. That certainly gets my vote or or your money back. "No problem took out Kent state golden flashes. Fifty six thirty four I'm actually wearing a Kent state golden flashes. T-shirt one of my nieces graduated there. And the reason I word is because you see the yellow collar and then add to clean Matthews. Green Bay jersey that the wife got me. So I gotta be in the SC fan. You know, it's all I have this year. It's been such a down year for Southern Cal still got claim Matthew Smith still love that guy. You still envious of the long hair and stuff, you know, I had that stuff back in high school, and, you know, throughout you know, my my twenties after I got out of the service. You know, grew that hair back a little bit. But back in the, you know, in in high school years had that long hair. And so when you see somebody like a clay Matthews or some of these other guys for the different college teams, you know, we look at them, and we're like Godman account along hair. And you remember your parents guide who's at free hippie? You know, it's like. Know. But you you always like that guy if he was on your team, football wise had that long hair flowing out of the helmet and stuff. So Matthews one of my favorites. And as good as he was coming out of Southern Cal, and of course, going to the NFL and excelling there. He was a walk on at USC. He did not get a scholarship originally. Can you imagine an ammunition dad and his uncle uncle, Bruce and his dad Klay senior? I mean, they both played at Southern Cal. They were both all Americans lo and behold. Yeah, your kids, but he's not that good. We'll see if he can make the team he walks on. He makes it then again scholarship after that. But he had to prove himself. I at the collegiate level couple of other games in college football, Houston, thirty eight to nine pounding to lay. No at Oliver the big defensive player the star for the cougs not playing. There were missing a couple of other guys as well couple receivers. But no problem. Derek king leading the way there for the cougs and Tillman for Tita, you know, he'd been on the show. Of course, he owns the Houston Rockets big booster over there at UH. And of course, owns the golden nuggets. I'm there. Tomorrow night every Friday night over at the golden nugget right across from the Cadillac Mexican Cantina love that place. And of course, Tillman also all those Landry's restaurants, but Houston university of Houston that's his team and thirty eight nine they're taking to lane North, Texas. Also played Florida Atlantic. So the lane train who have been playing well of late right now they trail the mean green seventeen to seven I came in Denton, Texas, one thirty six toe to go in the first quarter told on that game went from sixty to sixty three and a half looks like it went the right way. North Texas going off a four point favorite closing number opened at three let's go and check out three games in the NBA one games coming up in about twenty minutes from now at the clip joint. It is the clippers minus six and a half total to seventeen and a half against the San Antonio Spurs, so sharp just left here. And he said I said what'd you play today's as killing it in the NBA go. What would you have you got the rockets, you know, you got the nuggets? Now, I got the clippers on the money on. So he's playing, you know, he's laying some pretty decent money. Now. The line did go from three and a half to six and a half. Sharp being the guy that he is J D probably got it at a pretty decent price before it rose up to six and a half closing number which is not closing yet. But shortly.
