"Five bro. It just you and everybody says it off all these people. Keep going and yeah. We looked the same as everybody else. Guilty name that to name it and claim it that we do it. Yeah i think we're getting. I think we're all getting a little bit right now. We're rican the proverbial cu les To to think that whereas divided actually As we are. I think. I think i think that most of us have have a common denominator values in the middle. No matter what church we go to political our vote on that were just having the shape pullover to see that. But i believe we're the majority. Yeah yeah definitely agree. Ticket sales tickets. That's right look. I know you've got a hard stop here in the next several minutes. I want to be very respectful of that. I do want to ask one thing that. I was very intrigued with as i was listening to your book. You said Actually said it when we started this conversation that you felt like oh man and more masculine than you ever had when you had your first child. Can you talk to me about that. So one thing. I'll only avenue. I wanted to be in. Life was dad. Then i have a child. All of a sudden realized i was just did asked on. Lineage bloodline oh All of a sudden now is not living for the president was living for the future all of a sudden moral things that i looked around that. Maybe i was slightly intimidated by. Didn't have the courage to embrace. Even my career had like number one on my gold at sparta. That's my number one goal to get my dignity. Then child now career went to number two at least kind down three and because that gave me less fear about anything to do with my career i got better at my career as it went to the three hole instead of the way right and lose rainy respect for it. I just lost a certain reverence that had me. Maybe more impressed. With then. I was involved with it will boy. You have a child us. I think a man's head heart loins and spirit are immoral lying at that point and he's courageous to see clearly enough to go forward for those reasons. Oh now memorial okay. Let's get it on. Let's let's let's take the real risk. And i got a hell lot more courageous with myself with others. Chances i would take because now. I was a courier and like i said now. More moral every parent becomes immortal when they have children. And hopefully you know those children have children. Pass it on and i was like. There's the greatest light. I can leave. There's my legacy. That's the greatest legacy i can have is my first one side of our children. I finish legacy. We can leave your ends exam. You wanna know. Somebody can meet their kids. Hang out them. You know what i mean. We're gone aznar stories on. They're the ones that are emanations and extensions of us. That is awesome of the thing that i think they're living in the nation's they're not they're not they're not movie they're not a piece of art or not a podcast. There like a living in the nation extension of us in. How did we shepherd them how. This great awesome opportunity. We get to shepherd who become the head on the life on their own. Just talking about a buzz. That gets me off on no doubt. That's powerful stuff man. Look i appreciate you. I'm so glad that i wasn't so stubborn to a completely right off your book. I'm so glad that i listened to it that i that i got a copy. That enough people said no. No no no you gotta read it. You gotta listen to it and honored to be able to have this conversation. Then i feel like we have a responsibility to let people know where they can access these tulleson threat here with the order. Podcast please do that. Our guys without announcement. Let me get to my guest earlier. This is the one and only matthew mcconaughey. And i'm sure none of you need an introduction to who this man is we all know him from his iconic roles on the silver screen But most of us have never been introduced to the depth of his thoughts and ideas and insights. Which are plenty in fact. That's why enjoyed his new book. Green light so much in it he gives us a glimpse into his life than most of us will never see or never have even considered before and showed us that in spite of his tremendous public success. He's a man who has had his share failures and setbacks like all of us have so guys. I really think you're going to enjoy this conversation as much as i did. And you're going to walk away with the new perspective into the life of a man that we may think. Just think that we already know. Enjoy the conversation guys all right matthew. Good to see glad you could join us on the podcast today to be here. I look honest confession. Time here for me when your book came out. I'm like nah. i saw it in the airport. I think that was the first time i saw it. I'm like now. I'm not gonna read that book now. I'm not gonna read that book. And then i saw other people had you on their podcast and hurt interviews you did. I'm like nah. i'm not gonna read that book and finally enough people said you really artery to book and i started listening to a little bit. More to your podcast. I read the book like damn. I read the book earlier because it was amazing. Man i i actually listen to it and year narration and everything was just. It was incredible. I really enjoy thank. you now. Question unquestioned. I look good man. I'm not reading that. I know that a lot of people weren't going to breed that book. Because i wrote that book because you wrote the book. I had made some assumptions about you. And i think hollywood in general like what's this guy going to teach me that i already haven't figured out on my own or i'm not in the midst of learning for myself heard heard i. You know i mean remember. Remember telling one of the my publishers before heading off to to radisson look. I'm a lot of people. Go buy this book. Because i wrote it. Even if what's on the page is crab i go. lot of. People are not going to buy this book no matter how good it is on the pages because i wrote it i go. I've got to remember writing this down day for writing. It was like look. May the words on these pages be worthy of share. And if they're signed by anonymous and at the same time being word that only i could have written so that was star for because i understood at a platform being who. I am celebrity that some people have been built. And i i dig mccown. i'll read it. I understood also my platter celebrity. Some people go away reading that book. A one of the things that you talked about in the book that really resonated with me. I think it was towards the end. When you were talking about you. Redefining yourself your specifically your career from this guy to. Hey i gotta stop doing that. Altogether and redefine myself. Because i think a lot of people just naturally think well that's mcconnell as he's the romcom guy he's a good looking guy gets the chicks. There's not much more depth to them than that right. Well that's what was this excessive those rom coms and parlayed with the fact. That property were taking pictures of me running a shirtless on the beach. Every day out front of those houses that those rom coms paid for. Yeah that's of those made. The industry and the public go kind is wrong. Comp guy hit so. When i wanted to go do dramas studios rouser like no way. Dude stay in your lane. And i was like it's a good line. I enjoy this lane but it was a time where my life was getting so vital. Talk about and look at a child. You got children bribed before or so. You know i mean man after your first child you know. Man's never more courageous in mashonaland and also like man. I'm feeling so vital in my life much more vital than my work. I was like well. I'm glad it goes that way. You know then the opposite. But i was like i'd i'd like to do some work that challenges of italian feeling in my life that were not coming my way so because i couldn't do what i wanted to. I just decided to stop doing what i've been doing. As you see in the book it took about two years sort of on brand and even be a new good idea for the dramas. I wanted to do well. One of the things that you talked about too is how much money you actually walked away from and look a lot of guys are in the same boat. I was in the same boat years ago. I was doing a financial planning practice. It was going well. I was having success success. I was helping people. And i remember taking a phone call from client. It came up on the phone. And i'm like damn. I don't want to answer this call right now right. And it wasn't the work and it wasn't the client. I should say it wasn't the client individually. It was the work that i just was like. I'm done i'm out would you do. I mean 'cause i. I had that exact same moment when atp production company and i had five employees had an office in venice and i'm at home and the phone rang and there number came up and i knew from the opposite. I went to pick up the phone in my hand polished. And i looked at my head i said. What are you doing positive. Pick up the damn phone call from your own office that you pay the salaries that you pay the rent. And i was like i let it rain and soon as it quit ringing i picked up the phone and call my lawyer and said no more production company letting everything go man. Because i was like what that makes no sense i was like eighty did. What did you do after that call. I had a i. I remember i had a real heart to heart with my wife and i said hon..

"Matthew mcconaughey. Yes the great actor. The oscar winning actor who hails from texas That he is seriously thinking about getting into the governor's race in twenty twenty two. It's right that matthew mcconnahey is gonna run for texas governor. The reason you're going to hear that is because matthew. Mcconaughey is doing a tour of media outlets for to promote his new book and during the process a lot of people talk to him about politics and ask him questions about. Hey you're going to run for governor and he has said it's a consideration but he goes on to talk and explain things that make you understand. It's really not. It's really not something. He's serious about right now but maybe some way down the like. Here's a direct quote. He said look. Politics seems to be a broken business to me right now and when politics redefines its purpose i could be a hell of a lot more interested so when you hear that matthew mcconaughey is gonna run against governor abbot i. I wouldn't believe it don't believe it

"It is possible. He responded to the question about whether he would run for governor by saying it's a real consideration. Bernie, What do you think of the idea? Of Matthew Makani running for president. Well sided, are you? Well, I enjoyed interviewing Kinky Friedman when he was running. You know, When I hear this, I knew this was inevitable. I don't think you'll actually run. But I feel like after Trump became president. Now It's everybody longer. Yeah, Anybody can do it. The mystery is gone. Arnold Schwarzenegger becomes governor of California, Jesse Ventura of Minnesota. So, Yeah. Why not? Matthew McConaughey. What the hell? Governor that the good thing in Texas the governor. Power in Texas is with the Lieutenant governor, not the governor. Actually, we have kind of Ah, weak Governor system in the state of Texas. So you could be governor here. No big deal just where the where the costume and Where the hat and everything's good. It's a good gig if you can get it. That's right. $150,000 for not doing too much of anything unless there's some kind of crisis than everybody because nobody knows how their own state government works. Everybody starts looking to you and saying Well, you're the leader lead us out of this. And they don't matter what you do. It's not good enough. They

How Rich Eisen 'Met the Moment' in His First SportsCenter Broadcast

"My first sportscenter was in the middle of march of nineteen ninety-six. It was a saturday. Seven o'clock eastern sportscenter which they don't have that time slot anymore but at any rate it was right there early evening on a saturday during march madness. I think it was the first weekend. I had to have been the round of thirty. Two of the nineteen ninety-six march madness tournament. Larry beal was the other anchor. And i remember be nervous very nervous and i try to stay loose just like matthew dry. St louis need to stay loose. And i tried to prepare for it but the problem was is the games that i would be doing. The highlights of on this show were all happening. They're all happening all going down. I mean it's march madness. You know that you know games are nonstop the tipping off fifteen minutes field like and it feels like whenever you're watching it. That's what makes it so great. And i remember thinking to myself. How am i going to prepare for this. How can i stay loose. What am i going to do. And it was time to go down to the studio for my first ever sportscenter. And i had about twelve games of highlights in the show and add only the paperwork they give you a shot sheet to read off of in notes form knowing what shots are going to appear on the screen so you knew the information of who had the ball and what the score was and how much time is left on the clock and what have and so on and so forth so i had the paperwork and it only seen the highlight of one of the twelve that i had in the show. In other words. I would have to ad-lib eleven of the twelve highlights. I had in the show sight unseen like. Normally you would get this highlight. You'd look at it. you'd watch it. You'd go over it so you know what you might say when you say it on the aaron live tv and i remember thinking to myself walking down to the said i had two choices. That's i boil it down to two choices. Try to make it very easy for me to remain calm. And i remember thinking to myself to choices one was to suck it up and know that this was my dream moment and i had been betting on myself my entire life that i was waiting for this moment and it finally arrived albeit. Not what the attention to detail. That would have calmed my nerves or the preparation. That i wanted or ever envisioned. I would not have going down to the studio. That was choice. A choice b was to be down my leg. And i thought to myself. You know. that's choice it's Definitely not choice. Let's choose. And i don't know how the show went. I went well. I mean you know. I wasn't fired on the spot I was bouncing off the walls. But i just remember thinking to myself. I got two choices. One is to go with the flow. Go at the moment. Believe in yourself know that this moment that you've been waiting for your entire life has arrived and meet it. Meet the moment and the other choices to panic which might feel good at the time but never would work out in a million years.

"The author the man himself matthew. Mcconnahey how are you matthew. Goodrich is and get to see him in. Always good to talk to you to see you as well. What's going on with you. How's life in general for your other one's pretty good. We're down here in texas trying to unfreeze. We lost power. We lost power. Water pipes froze then when they froze waterpipes busted so we got a lot. A lot of water travels down in texas. Need plumbers for some time were navigating. Don't together benefits real good talent coming out. We're gonna raise some money to help out some people that need it right now. Knock on wood. I wanna learn a little bit more about that. But you're again one of my favorite guests some people to talk to when i just have a few minutes with you and for me to start my new pod and it's about just getting started i just described to the audience. Essentially that i want this pod to somebody something portable in this day and age were obviously so many lives have been turned upside down and so many people are wondering if the path that they're on the path they take and you're perfect for this man again. Your book green lights as you said is a love letter to life and it's about turning red lights in yellow lights into green lights and just about origin stories. And you're just a perfect person to ask the general sense about just getting started and how you got started. What doubts did you have when you were first. Starting out yourself. At many doubts you said something really cool out of an earth. Put this way you want to give people something portable meaning. What retake with us when we're out of class. What can we take with us when we're outside of our church or whatever that is when we're not in our comfort zone that we can have in our hip pocket in our souls and go yet. I can use this approach in life. And it'll help me navigate and gets a good way to put portable doubts for me man. I've calibrated recalibrated thousands of times. I've had grand plans. That i thought would lead pipe cinch. There ain't no way this go wrong. And either imploded or the world exploded and for me and i sat there going. Oh jeez i've also had written many headlines. I before i had any idea housing to get there and lived the story to and had successes that way. I've also had many times where. I just hardest part about me going into what i was going to do. Is just to tie and shoes. Get out the damn door. Jump off the cliff. Figure out a fly on the way down. Seems like that's sort of the art of life making plans and then knowing that change is gonna come anyway. The unknown in doubts of.

"Man. The unknown in doubts of just knowing the answer. That's something that i think that we all have. We want to know the answer. Can you make tangible. Can you tell me what. I'm going to take this risk. Can you tell me. I wanna see my reward can okay. Now i see it clearly now know well reward. Don't really like that. Even if we have an idea of what they are. We're going into something. They aren't what we thought they were when we get there anyway so i think the doubt is in what is it. What is an accomplishment. Gonna be there's even unknowns when we're very secure about where we're going and that's not all the time so you can have more doubts if you're only seeking a result or less dashiell lean into the comfort of doubting going. Hey i'm not about the result. I'm going to enjoy the process of doing what i need to do. And how. I look up one day. I'll see where i am and if we do that over and over that sort of leading into the doubt

Cowboys' Dak Prescott Donates Meals To Help Feed the Homeless.

"Prescott. Okay, one more does this man have to fucking news his City for his City's football team to say, let's put a ring on it. You're our Jude. So Jack Prescott and Matthew McConaughey paid for homeless people to they basically felt homeless people during this entire Texas shitstorm ice storm that happened here 1000 meals to one of the local homeless shelter slash organizations that are feeding folks and keeping them warm. This is actually like a warming Center slash place for people to come and be fed. Yes, Jack Prescott and Matthew McConaughey joined forces and did this now I get it off. Granted I'm not going to be the asshole. It's like oh, well, if it's not public that means people don't donate not true at all. Who knows who else donated from that organization, but you think it would have leaked somehow right? I'm not going to assume nobody donated but it just doesn't look good publicly when there's other organizations locally on the sports side that are donating. Anyway, my point with that is what the fuck more does Dak Prescott home to do. I'm starting to get really fucking mad. I'm about to go up to the star or Preston Hollow or Highland Park or University Park or actual Cowboys stadium and beat it or down because your girl is fucking pissed at this point. Well, here's what sucks for you Jazz. The one thing have you seen my life since 2020. There's a guy there's a running list. There's a sticker of everything that's wrong with my life. That's at the bottom of the screen. Yeah. That is there's no debating whether or not deck is a nice guy. Clearly. We know that clearly we know he's as a fantastic human being home. It took them a while to sell the advertising but they got it done but from everything. I've read this year. More companies are going to be using celebrities than ever before make sense. Celebrities are pretty easy. You got to pay a little bit more. I guess to get the bang for the buck. But everybody's gonna talk about the ads with celebrities in them now. I haven't seen any ads so far. That just heard about some of the ads. I know we'll farrell is going to be one. I've seen a teaser from gm. Mike myers and dana. The race for Rob Portman's Senate seat begins

"And Senator Rob Portman will not seek reelection in 2022, the Republican how Republican put out a statement saying that it's gotten harder and harder to break through the partisan gridlock. At this point, you know, it's interesting. He came out to say that yesterday on the well, I mean, just hours before the Democrats sent the impeachment case against former President Trump to the Senate. With the start of that historic trial, which by the way that set now for February 8th because over the weekend, Matthew McConaughey, who lately and I I can see how the rumors they're starting where Matthew, who lives in Austin. And I don't know if he's a registered Democrat or independent or Republican. But he's been very vocal in the past few months about Democrats, Republicans and, you know, come on. All right, all right. We all just got to get along here. But he had this to say over the weekend to a show in the UK just about the problems with the weight left. In the way, right? You need Liberals. What I don't think we need is the ill liberals. And what I don't think that some liberals see is that they're often being cannibalized by the ill liberals. Now, you know they're extremes on both sides that I think are unfair that I don't think of the right place to be. The extreme left in the extreme right, completely illegitimate eyes, the other side, Um, the liberal and the conservative side, which we need in certain places. They two extremes, illegitimate eyes, those those two sides or they exaggerate that that side's stance into an irrational state that that makes no sense. And that's not fair when neither side does that. Um, you know, we're not. Oh, well, the water where the water lines gonna land on this freedom of speech and what we allow and what we don't and where this canceled culture goes, where that water line lands is a very interesting place that we're engaged in right now is a society of trying to figure out because we haven't found the

Like we're always in this quest for happiness and it's about stuff and things wanting to add things to distract us right in. I'm all about distraction especially in the throes of a craving or high anxiety or when. You're super upset. I think in those moments one of the best things you can do is kind of distract yourself until some of that emotion comes down in then. You can figure out really how to cope with it and often times. That quest for happiness is more about removing things. That aren't serving us. And that's really what i want to get into in some changes that i did in twenty twenty. That made a big difference for me and it just food for thought some things that you can think about again especially going into this new year this fresh new perspective the next version of you that you're going to build the next level of your sobriety your life your relationships. I want you to think about some of the things that you can take out of your life. That just don't serve you. Well the first things that i really started to cut down on in the beginning of corona virus was news in negative information. And this isn't just about corona virus but also this kind of place together but also the political part of everything. The last few years has just been super toxic and weird and divisive and i. I don't like divisive anyway. So i don't like to play into that. That news just got super overwhelming to me now. Obviously i check in. We have a

"Yes up good i. That was my favorite read of the book. The audio read. You didn't about eight hours. I think i think the book rate is six and a half hours audible but it took eight out. People can take a four days long time. But i i guess because i lived the stories and wrote them. I knew the punchline was coming new the next care there was so fun doing all the voices and all nala intonations of people we have to because it's to hear your intents and to hear when things are light or would hear things have gravity or to you know is we're gonna be doing the emotional back on reading the book but to hear you perform it really is like spending you know six hours just hanging out with you and it does. It does feel like a hangout. At which think is harshly why the book is doing so well and also people are just fascinated by you as a creature. I think they it and it doesn't the storytelling in the aphorisms. And the kind of like you know southern country lawyer you know it it all just. It's almost like the holy fuck. I'm listening to matthew mcconaughey. Do a matthew mcconaughey character. It's fucking amazing. I love it. it's just fun. it's just fun to listen to it and the sort of the philosophical. Because i've noticed you've done. I know i was very fascinated by the fact that you've done some of the more philosophical podcast you could ryan holidays. Did russell brands. And you know. I would say this. One is on the cost of that that that kind of like or does it. All mean mankind of podcasts. You know but but but but the tone of it is is really your philosophical journey and about halfway through. I was like i think mcconnell as like a truth gifter. He's like he's trying to con the universe and then later in the book you go. Yeah i think. I'm like a gift or i don't know a my daughter or my just trying to. I'm like holy shit. You feel that way. I'm trying to work out the riddle. Like everybody else and trying to get away with what i can jonah. Pick out some things that that that that lasts trying to find some non rely on a world where it's hard to find those. It's it. I assure believe life game. We're all on the. We're all same rodeo. Trying to get our eight second and you know sometimes that means knowing your zone sometimes that means call an audible rivalry right at the time. Sometime that means sticking with the plan You know life sport so sometimes you do that griffin sometimes you gotta hustle and sometimes you gotta hustle and bustle sense of the word words and then as i say step and shit a lot allowed times along the way and you know how you feel about it after stepping in shit is really kind of one of the arts of living goes if you dwell and you know how bad your luck was. It doesn't do anything about the shit. She stepped in right. You still shit. You know what i mean. You have to get a stick and like scrap it out of the bottom of your shoe know no matter how many times you shouted. It's not the shit's just not gonna and and in you know and if you are the one that has to scrape the shit off of your shoe that you just stepped in. Will you can either him in hallway scraping off or you can giggle and go. Of course. I think while you're scraping off the same. I mean i do. I do kinda wonder how. Because i think.

"Even though david banner was trying to find a way to quell the raging beasts that dwelt within him ultimately david banner mcconnell. Hey we're both searching for inner peace. They were both just trying to find it wherever they could. You know mcconnell as green light means go means move onto means you you can go to the next level move forward banners. Green light was gamma radiation and turn them into the hawk Arrigo the super saddest theme song ever god that theme song. I gotta learn that on piano. The ninna i cried every week when that show was on. I think we're kind of journey was sad like that every week but definitely that sort of like the journey of trying to of going outward to find inward and find that inner peace and find that wholeness and he's very open about the whole journey and seems like he has become centered and found found peace. And so i really recommend the audio version of the book. I cannot say enough how much i enjoyed this conversation. He was just so fucking cool and nice and and open to talk about anything had such great information and so many great little nuggets of wisdom so for me. This was like the perfect form of the podcast. This podcast is firing all cylinders. Because someone came on. I knew who this person was very well. And i'm a admired their work and guess what they turned out to be read. We connected right away I learned a bunch of stuff and by the end. It wasn't like oh. I just had a guest on. It was like oh i had my friend matt on. We just sat and shot the shit for a while. And i think you'll feel that way with him too. So thank you to matthew mcconaughey. Hey for doing this podcast. "Okay enough with the plugging. Let's get to this episode. Which i think this is really a fantastic episode to wrap up twenty twenty and i will say you know. I hope this year of podcasts has helped Distract you a help from another wise very stressful year. Help give you some positive takeaways Some fun things are like. I said just kinda zone out for an hour you know and sort of shut everything else off. I appreciate you appreciate that. You've listened to this podcast own. My gosh i mean. Even if you haven't been around. Since the beginning i appreciate that you listen to it at all. Maybe maybe you just discovered it this year. I don't know but we're going into our eleventh year. Which is a long time over a decade. oh my gosh anyway This is matthew mcconaughey this episode and he was just incredible like such a great dude to talk to and it's on the heels of his book release called green lights which you can either read in book form but i recommend the audio version because he reads the audio version. And so what. I find great about that especially with performances that you can really hear the intention behind the stories and especially because this is essentially autobiographical and i say essentially autobiographical. Because it is an autobiography but it's a philosophical journey so it's not just i was born and then this happened it it's really about. I was born in these things happen. And here is what. I extrapolated from that philosophically. How i kind of navigated these things In so it is. There are a ton of lessons. I read this. Listen to this book And it's great because it's like it just sounds like you're sitting down and hanging out with mcconnell. Hey for a few hours. And i took a lot of notes. There's just so many great life lessons and he's definitely a student of life and someone who is always strive to do better even through you know rocky times through times. We didn't know what he was going to do. And also you know. I wish i brought this up on the podcast. 'cause i'm curious to know how how he responds to this but he talks about in. He mentioned it a couple of times in the book that when he was growing up his favourite show was the incredible hulk. I also watched the seventies bill bixby incredible hulk which by the way is the most depressing superhero. Maybe one of the most depressing shit in the history of because it. It really was the sort of greek. Hero's journey of he was called david banner in the series. They called him david. Banner instead of bruce banner but his but at the same character because he basically is just the loneliest guy in the world. And it's just the greek hero's journey of him trying to find himself and get back home home home being himself. I guess his whole life but he's got this hulk situation that he's got to deal with and i find it interesting that when you give too much away but green lights is really mcconaghy's journey and oftentimes. When he would find himself in crisis he would hit the road in search of himself. Just go somewhere. You know david banner style you know. He would go talk to shaman and he'd go talk to different people and tried to get wisdom and understand. Go on these trips. For a long time. He lived like he had an airstream and he would just drive around the country. And just you know just inhabit. Move on and i wanted to ask him like. Do you think there was influenced by david. Banner at all from the incredible hulk who dead kind of had the same. And really you know..

"Matthew mcconnahey on dose of leadership. I can't believe it what was show my friend good to be here. It's a great topic to talk about will never go out of style talking about this job. Yeah no can. I say i love the book i read it and i listened to it to different experiences and i'm glad i did both because the visual aspect of the book was i listened to it i because it is easier for me being on a plane and stuff but then i read it and i. It's like i got two different experiences. I got a lot out of it doing both ways. I he said that to you about a few bums. Somebody said to me. When i read it they they read it it with their own voice. Yeah in the hear me read it audio only for short hair my voice and hey heard laughed in places that they didn't laugh when they read it herbie point out certain things that maybe they'd skipped over and toast the reading same book but getting two different things out of it each. Yeah no it was just great. And i think it was. I don't know it was a great book. For the time i think for the year i mean it was profound a lot of ways in the sense and i thought well god this would be a good topic because there's so many areas of leadership and i don't know if you've ever looked at it that way but at least it's a big umbrella a lot of stuff you talk about in here and this show is about like how to kind of navigate through life and that's what the book is rate and i love the concept of the green lights but to me the i talk a lot about on the show and i used to come from the marine corps. The biggest thing i learned is like how to be a composed forcing a chaotic situation. And that's what your book was to me was like you seem to embrace this idea. That look man. It's never smooth. It's never a straight line it's jagged it's up and down and those red lights and the yellow lights that we come across. There's a that's the stuff that kind of shapes us and there's green light assets. I think is the term that you used that are inside of those things that resonates with me because i think life is about. You can lead a significant life if you can learn how to be composed force in a chaotic situation. And that's what i got out of your book. How does that resonate with you. I say i love that term to please remind me that i got to write it down now but i really like composed force in chaotic situation. Yeah i mean you know. I don't care what your i don't think it matters what someone's beliefs are whether they're a believer in another life after this or if they're sort of hey life's all about cruelty. We're just dying every day. That's all that's all fine or if you're an eternal optimist you know every day great. We've got another son rose for me. That wasn't guaranteed ever way. Jeter ever end of the spectrum anyone's from either way the more proactive the more constructive. The more the more healthy more fun choice is to go well by believe in that you know we're just dying off every day in the world's cruel and it sucks to be here that's fine shake hands that so now we might as well do it with pleasure in it with dignity. Is that bring that that that that line later in the book right. Say in those times where we feel like. It's all for nothing more. The math of the world adds up to say. Oh tall for nothing. What it's in those moments that are part and parcel with only. It's all for everything right. The alternative you know. And i'm wishing hallmark card delusion i'm trying to. I'm not a fan of that stuff. I'm not a pep rally. Cheerleader guy. i'm trying to find practical stuff. I've tried to find it my own life and of it is to pull another line for the book. If you do have an island point of view okay well then purchased this once. you know. it's a near dawn right. So if you're going to say oh. It sucks within go. Well okay gonna make the best of it however so i think that's what you what you're loading to in certain times where my red and yellow lights in the l. All having when. I bring up something as simple as sense of humor being default emotion on not within the contradictions that that i'm not i'm not i'm using bring that up. Say that doesn't deny the crisis now. It's just another tool to help you deal with it. It's more survival. And some of these things maybe thrive but at least can use to help better survive. And how little more satisfaction getting through this rodeo. We're all in right. you know. it's not. It's not even fair to say it's a a a typical book that i mean it does. It does have things that you can apply to your life. But it's not a how to book is a memoir sweat slash. These are the things that worked for me. Take it if you like it. If not i don't i don't you know this is what this is. What my life is did. You is that i guess. What was the intent when you set out to right. It wasn't to help people like myself or help other people or was it just to kinda get your authentic self out. There was a deleted legacy for your kids. it was all the above. What was it. I mean i mean somewhat all the above started off i thought it was gonna be before i opened up that big trust of journals to see what i had in them ones. I've been keeping for the last thirty six years i i. I had an idea of what i thought i was gonna find. You and i thought it would be very academic. I thought it was going to be very self help. I thought it was going to be sort of. If then if then and i like some of that but again back can start to lean into that hallmark or world and self has got. You know we've all i've got. I've got a decent relationship with with with self help. But i like i like my sort of wisdom to have little more context and allow me the individual to have the power to go rhino acting. Apply this in a different way and my position and this is i can apply in a particular way that no one else can. We each can do that.

What would what do you think your campaign slogan would be if you were to run. Oh hell i. Don i mean like i said mandate i'll meet you in the middle of someone show. Someone sent me something the other night that said here's your campaign and make america alright. Alright alright again. I'm like out loving. Could work or or keep living. Isn't that that's kind of interesting evans. Too i mean that's really the umbrella living in. Leave me the hell alone. Well you know it's it's a mixed though. I mean delete the leave me the hell alone. Get it at the same time. We've got to recognize that we are a collective more so than we do now. True that does not mean. That doesn't mean trespassing on each others rights or or or or you know doesn't take away. I'm not talking about taking away individual freedoms but we do need something we do need to bind some social contracts with each other in whether they're even if they're unsaid we need a bit of an understanding constitution that if you and are hanging out and you and i shake hands on the deal i can i. I want to be able to trust the. You're not going to pick my pocket and screw me on the deal. Right looked at each other. I mean there's some certain things of decency and integrity and responsibility and accountability even risk taking sense of humor that we can. We need to re bind between us and understanding that that trust is so low right now known as who they trust man we just other trust ourselves. We don't believe in others. We don't have a consensus between a science or leadership. Who the hell do we listen to do. And what happens in then. We start really individual. Where i listen anybody. Then that's not a great recipe of everyone becomes so selfish that they don't give a damn about each other at all. Not at all not at all and i love what you're saying here about you know. Instead of finding tribes and politics race gender finding our tribe been in shared values. I think that's that's a pretty good message. There you know hell if you run. Matthew McConaughey addresses rumors he’s considering running for Texas governor

"All these bad governors these three. We got a good news in the governor world. and that is that matthew mcconaughey. Hey has not ruled out. A run for texas governor. Oh hell yeah. Yeah this is what mcconnell. Hey said he said well. I don't know. I mean that wouldn't be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would be me. I would say this look. Politics seems to be a broken business to me right now and when politics redefines its purpose i could be a hell of a lot more interest. He might be the first person to get one hundred percent of the vote. Governor elect fucking to stroke. Could you imagine it'd be like it'd be it'd be fucking party. Twenty four seven brute. Game days of the governor's mansion his nephews miller and light would show up. Oh my god yeah so. There's some good news. holy shit. Yeah he's he's gonna win that one.

"Welcome back to the Sunday sit down podcast now, more of my conversation with Matthew mcconaughey. Some great scenes in the book when you're on this run of romantic comedies I, think it's the first one, the big one, the wedding planner where they write you Jack and you go. Wow. Okay. I'm going to the sat dome. Armand, me get my own key to the kitchen could stakes three o'clock in the morning? Did you enjoy living that big life during that run? When really boy it was one movie after another that were hits and everybody knew you and your co stars also big stars as well. Did you like that run up until a point because in the book you say, I knew it sort of had to end somewhere. I did I thoroughly. Enjoyed it. When I gave myself licensed to enjoy it. I went ahead and said, okay, let's. Let's see how much freedom you can give yourself in go. Let's just let's the lean into. Your Life that that that you've that you've got McConnell Haney the access influence and fame let's lean into just let's let's. Let's go those play that character. For a while and I did and I quite enjoyed it but I always knew even going into it that it was going to be a stop. Not Stay I mean I knew I didn't know how long I was like no, don't go ahead. Don't don't don't. You know pull out of this too early leaning to enjoy it and you'll know when it's time to get out and that time did come where I needed more resistance I needed more I was I was I'd had enough Saturdays row. In my life and onscreen and I needed some Monday morning accountability responsibility in I needed some ascension and. Building needs resistance to create a new structure in my life, and then I think around two, thousand eight or so you sort of put on the brakes on things for almost two years and. Twenty months you say, all right. I'm going to recalibrate. What were you doing in those twenty months? Had you know which direction to head after that? Well. I knew I wanted to go rolls I wanted to do but those rules are not coming my way. So they were not an option so because I couldn't do what I wanted to do I stop doing what I was doing. South Romantic, Comedy Stop the action. Adventures. moved out of the Chateau, etc.. I'd met my now wife Camilla that time was falling love with her and we had. Created our first child. So. Those were to really great anchors to have for me in my life when I chose to take a sabbatical working. I knew I would battle bouts of insignificance which I did a new battle bouts of..

"Everyone had a biography of which happens to any person who gets famous. Somebody has an innate. Perception, somehow of that person before they come up and they lean right into the story, they come right into the cliff notes you know without the introduction. I noticed I was not meeting strangers anymore I noticed that for me personally, my soul. Needed some missed its anonymity. here all of a sudden last Friday before time to kill cames out came out there were one hundred scripts done but I couldn't do any of them and now two days later Monday. Their offer me all hundred of those scripts and I'm going what two days ago I would have done any of those. Now you're telling me I, can do all of those I need some discernment I need to go figure out what what what matters here matters to me so. I put on backpack and got outta Dodge and went to places where people did not know my name where I was stuck with no one. But me and my internal dialogue to try and get my soul and feet on the ground and understand my head and my heart communicating clearly again to say what is it? I want what I want WanNa do what is it I don't want I write about this a lot in the book. You know it's very hard to know what we want and who we are. And that's okay. By process of elimination getting rid of the things you don't want and who you are not you will give you a better chance to end up being who you are and getting what you want. So that was the beginning of that process after I became famous and and then went on from there. That's every day since then for you is that feel like a lifetime ago when people did not know you on the street. All, I kind of. kind of I'm kind of at ease with it. Now, I still I'm able to now And much more quick now to meet someone in already understand is out they've already got a bye on you but I know how to get down. Underneath that with them. So we can have a real conversation. They can be completely honest with me as the guy, they just met Matthew, not the actor but the man math McConnell. So I've learned the tools for how to get under that in a graceful way hopefully, and sometimes it takes longer with certain people sometimes, it can take you know I don't have the effort. The where I write about in the book, we less impressed more involved sometimes, people will be impressed with my fame or something I'm not. They're not involved in the conversation with right there holding reverence for my place in society a someone famous that they're not really being themselves for behaviors. I've learned tools to get them to go. Okay. got that now. Hey, come here. And ask in certain question about the day. Do you have children or something like that and all of a sudden then baselines and I can have an involve conversation ONS conversational somebody but I've learned how to do that over the years. Hey guys thanks for listening to the Sunday. Sit Down podcast stick around to hear more from Matthew mcconaughey right after the break. We get support from care of as the seasons change. "Week with Oscar winner Matthew mcconaughey who does not love McConnell. Hey. We I fell in love with a guy back in nineteen ninety three when he played Woodson in the movie dazed and confused remember he was the twenty something guy who is still hanging out with the high school kids in town kind of a local legend who uttered the phrase alright. Alright. Alright. Did you know? Those three words were the first line ever delivered by Matthew mcconaughey in a movie it was his first acting job and that was his first line from there. He went on three years later to star in a time to kill opposite Sandra Bullock. That's when he really became a movie star then he went through the two thousands as this. Romantic comedy guy doing movies with Kate, Hudson, and J. Lo, and at long list of romantic comedies and then two thousand eight just goes dark. He was offered at one point. You'll hear talk about it fourteen and a half million dollars to do another. Comedy and he said, no, that's how serious he was about kind of things in a new direction in his career. So he goes away for twenty months almost two years. Comes back and just takes dramatic roles. Culminating in Dallas Buyers Club for which he won the Oscar. For Best Actor, of course, he did true detective which an amazing Hbo Series and so much more since then and now he's out with this book called Green Lights, it is the story of his life. He went back and looked at the diaries he has kept for thirty five or thirty six years since he was fourteen years old, he's fifty now. But last year he took all those diaries went to a cabin with no electricity in the middle of nowhere and read through them in realized there's some good stories in here I should put them in a book because I think a lot of people can relate to them. Most of US met Matthew, mcconaughey as a movie star but there's a lot of life for him before he got into the business Amazing. Truly like eye-popping some of them shocking stories in the book about his childhood and growing up in South West Texas you day Texas including some scenes in his home of violence between his parents violence toward him and we have kind of a a deep conversation about what he took away from that what it means to him. So so much to talk about with Matthew mcconaughey around his new book called Green Lights Right now on the Sunday, sit down podcast. Matthew thanks for doing this man. Appreciate it. You're welcome with a good to be here..

"Great. Story. I'm going to share with you twenty years. Maybe thirty years. Something having to do with us. With you particular and me But thirty. Thirty years. I'd like then you. Find the seven years. You will be alive. We will have a powwow and we'll do it on camera and we're gonNA laugh so hard. Because it's true. But nobody knows it. Wow Okay I'm gonNA. Try and stick to this movie for now, and then we had to come back around with us. So that's what happened and. I had no idea what the hell he was talking about and until. A week ago I still had no idea what he was talking about and we were only about two years into the promised twenty five or thirty year eventual. Explanation for this well, thankfully, guys. I had booked matthew to come on my podcast for the first time. By the way this is this is exciting. Regardless of this weird story would have been exciting because I wanted to have matthew on the podcast for a while. Anyway I'm reading his new. Book. I've read it by now but I'm reading last week called. Green Lights and it's a hell of a read. I highly recommend it if you are fascinated by matthew mcconaughey as I am. And why shouldn't you be he is easily you know he's Nick Cage level. He's that like he's on his own wavelength Woody Harrelson, Bill Murray you know these types of actors they just they're not like us I mean that in a good way. This book this memoir of sorts. Is. Four fantastic stories amazing stories mostly about as a life less about his career, but there's tons of career stuff in there too. Anyway, I'm reading the book. And I come to a page. where? This is like two thirds into the book. He tells a story about. ME. And Him. This is the story guys. This is the story. What he promised, what he told me two and a half years ago that we would talk about it's in the book. So I didn't have to wait thirty years. I didn't even have to wait twenty five years either way to two and a half years and I kind of love the way it happened I found out just by reading the memoir myself and I'm not going to go into it too much right now we go into it in this conversation right at the outset and it's a lot of fun. But suffice it to say. I was kind of I wouldn't say responsible but I am a very big part of the McConnell songs the famed mckanna. San's that was, of course Matthew's. Journey back to the top Hollywood where he eventually won the Oscar. For dowse buyer's Club and won the Emmy and every other award for detective. That was all term, the mccown Assange, this collection of great movie and TV roles that he did and unbeknownst to me until this time. I was a big part of Said mccown assaults. Crazy story it's get crazier when you actually hear the story from Matthew Zone whips we had a good laugh about it i. hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did. It's like I said, it's a full circle moment. Now, I can move onto the next mystery. My wife, I don't know what's going to top that one. Anyway this is a fun conversation with a true You know as I said a guy who marches to the beat of his own drummer and it's a great read. So I can't I can't recommend green lights highly enough other things dimension in brief I, do want to, of course, plug stir crazy comedy central series new episode this week with Chris read from Saturday night live. He is awesome hysterical. He's got to new kind of Halloween friendly movies out there right now including vampires versus the Bronx which is a lot of fun on Netflix. see asking check out in comedy central's Youtube and facebook pages, etc. Did a fun interview with with Emma Roberts for MTV go way back with 'em forever. So that was fun to to catch up with her for her new netflix smell holiday the Adam. Brody conversation is still up on MTV's youtube page, and that was often his movie that kid detective is Great. So. Yeah. We're turning burning a lot of good stuff not to mention Oh. Yeah. There's an election coming up guys get out there and vote if you haven't voted already voted the other day too early here in New York. It felt great. Get to get to your polling place at this point guys. Best Bet is to go there other early voting or go you go that day the mail system. Can't count on it. And we certainly want don't want those ballots getting there late. So go if at all possible, go yourself to the polling place and rob your ballot or or go to the polling station and make your voice be heard We've got end the madness participate as much as you in these last few days leading up to the election we've gotTA. Turn this country around. We've got to get this maniac out of the white. House we have to. Save Democracy. Doesn't get much bigger than this guy's I'm optimistic I'm hopeful but it's not gonNA happen unless you and everybody you know in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin yes Texas in Ohio and all these swing states everybody's got to get out there and this has to be. A sweeping referendum on what's been really painful four years for the country and Yeah it's gotTa it's gotTa turn around. So it's on all of us on our shoulders. This is our opportunity. We shake on its understood clearly the president of the Rotary Club even says it out loud to the entire rotary members matthews leaving silence show to deliver since it's clear well, that's on Thursday night we ride home not a word set about me leaving Friday. Not Award said about me leaving Saturday nothing Sunday, nothing Monday nothing now we're Tuesday this is the day that this night this man's supposed to come pick me up to take into the new house not one word has been said in the president land with me leaving not one. Weird. Berry we go have dinner. Five, o'clock, eight till about five forty clean, the dishes I'm going to get picked up at six thirty saw was going to say, we know what happens after this party Them getting picked up at six thirty I don't have time from other nightly ritual. Music. So. The dishes, I go back to my room. To check my bags that have been packed since last Thursday night make sure I've got everything and of course, I do because they've been quadruple jet. And getting, knock on the door, my bedroom and who's there. The man of the House the pop. Handset visible by the. Way decided that day you'll be staying with us for the duration of your stay here in Australia son pack your bags, and I went again at two zero. Thank you. But to my euro here I want to go experience with families and as you know, we've already worked this out I. loved the put his finger. So special the you've been just an absolutely top top top exchange student. We couldn't have enjoyed it anymore and I'm twilight zone mangled what can. Psychopath. So I in our and leave the rest of the trip. Was Much Easier But I learned those surreal valuable lesson in those four five months that I was with that first family that I'm could easily say, I, don't believe that'd be sitting here talking to you with the life I have right now if I did not have that time in that first family where I was forced inward and forced to figure out how to survive in somewhat keep our sanity. I would have lasted about three days. I don't know I knew going through it memory until the top of the story when I left the Rotary Club wanted me to sign a contract and I left America to go when we signed the contract that they get every other students sign, which is I vow to stay for the entire year unless there's a tragedy or something and I said I'm not I'm not signing a piece of paper. On as I look I'm going for the year shake your hands on it and I, shook on and had some sort of honor and pride that there was no that was non-negotiable for me. And while I was going, you know losing my mind there in that first family. Underneath a cat when I go to bed at night, something kept eating at me going like there's a reason for this. There's an. Infidel parachute yet kind of don't pull it see if you can atmosphere the situation. And I'm overall I'm glad I did yeah. Well, if anything comes out of this, I know the man better than most anybody listening watching. He is a man of his word, just leave it at that now. You touched on it and I say touch and it was a very brief mentioned in the book and and I want to. Tread lightly here and I. Don't I will go or not go wherever you don't want. There is mention of some episode in Australia as you were unconscious which I is one of your closest friends. Yeah..

Fonts Can Send Political Messages

"Here's something weird. Certain thoughts can send political messages. And with that. I am announcing my campaign for presidency using economic sense. Ms Well actually when you listen to this research you're gonNA realize why you don't WanNA use Comic Sans. Because nobody likes. It and liking fonts is one big part of this. I like Comic Sans No you. Don't nobody likes Comic Sans Vinyl run using papyrus even worse. My running mate will be Matthew mcconaughey all right well. A little while ago. A researcher at Virginia Tech named Kathryn Hanshin Notice that a local political candidate use different fonts on their signs in rural areas than they did in town as a political messaging expert. She wondered. Why was there. Something different about the fonts that worked best with people in the city versus people in the country so Hanshin turn that question into a research project. She and her team surveyed more than two thousand people to find out what they thought of various typefaces. And whether they thought fonts lined up with political ideologies sure enough they found that fonts can send political messages people see Fonseca's having liberal or conservative leanings. And the more people think of aligns with their thinking the more they'll like it. So here's the breakdown. Funds come in two basic varieties Sarath and sans Serif. A Sarah is a little liner stroke at the end of a letter. Think Times New Roman or your classic typewriter font the stuff you see in Newspapers Sans Serif Fonts are the ones without syrups silicon Arial Helvetica or the meriwether sands of the curiosity logo or just look at your keyboard right now. Chances are those letters are in a San Serif style. The study showed that generally speaking Sarah Fonts are considered more conservative and Sans Serif. Fonts are seen as more liberal. Bold type is seen as more conservative than Italic type but there are some differences within font families for example the highly serif black letter typeface. You usually see on the masthead of the New York Times and the Washington Post was seen as more liberal by conservative participants. Possibly because that's how they see these outlets specifically the important thing is that the more people viewed a font aligned with their ideology the more they liked it and vice versa. Basically this research shows that fonts have meaning and they're not just all about looks so as the two thousand twenty election heats up maybe take a closer look at those lawn. Signs and billboards design has a bigger impact than you think.
