"So who do you have at 9? I believe. At 9, I have the Tampa Bay lightning, which seems like it's probably a bit like too low for a team that says good as they are. I have the money. Okay. I don't know if it's a sense of fatigue with the lightning. But you know, they're obviously like the back to back champs, and there's tons of talent there. But they're not nearly as polished and as deep as they've been in years past. They've sort of struggled a little bit out of the gate maybe. You know, you kind of know, you kind of like know what you're gonna get from them in certain areas and like the other areas haven't been crazy interesting to me. One point where I've like made a point to tune in to watch is Matthew Joseph because I feel like Matthew Joseph has been somebody that I've kind of been expecting to take the next step and take on a bigger role and fill in some of the shoes of departing guys from that roster. So I've wanted to see him play and see what he's capable of. But outside of that, the lightning are not as much of a draw as you'd expect from a team that's been as good and as successful as them from the past couple of years. And I think for me, that's purely just because Nikita Gujarat isn't there right now. For as many good players, they have, they play a very sort of meat and potato style of game while he's not there. Like he unlocks so much for them with his creativity. And they just play an entirely different brand of hockey. When he's on the ice and he's flinging the puck around and he's a dual threat as a shooter in a passer. And so for me, it's a testament to how good and how deep they are that they don't have a top three entertainment level player in the lineup and they're still in my top ten. I have them at 8, but with Kutcher audit obviously be significantly higher. So for me, that's the difference there. And you're right, we've seen so much of them over the past couple of years, and we cut it in all the expect. So there isn't too much in terms of surprise. We're into my top 5 because I had like the jets and the capitals pretty high here. And I think the brilliant. So let's get to your top 5. Let's do the teams that you haven't covered yet up to that point. Okay, so I have the lightning at 9. I had to crack in at 8. I talked about that a little bit. At 7, I have the Colorado avalanche, which is pretty shocking that they're that low because heading into the season, I will probably put them like one or two based off of the top tier talent, like their McKinnon mccar rant and there's so much to watch there and they play a high energy pace and they open the season as a Stanley Cup favorite so there's always going to be intrigue there to see what they're capable of every single year or every single game..

Let's come back and this game is tied up to two with six twelve left. What a point by joseph. It was unbelievable. I thought he was gonna shoot it in shoot up but the guy went down in front of him so he just sauce maroon and he passed it to and maroon put it into the net. We're all tied up at two. Do you have a thought on those two plays. I can only imagine. Elliot how loud. It was the bell centre when romanoff scored well. It was hugely loud and it was also loud. Because i think this fan base has wanted to see romantic of play so the fact that he's scored that added another level to they like him and they want him in the lineup. Let's follow this up with With you overtime here and then move on. The podcast is when just going to be a quick you. The way folks Josh anderson scores in overtime. He is considered day to day, but John Cooper said earlier today he's unable to go tonight. All things considered knowing that look nationals, someone of a desperate team wanting to try and pick up some points next to last in the standings and the Lightning came out and I think did what they wanted to do. I agree. I think that the Lightning played a good game. You talked about shot volume and you know, getting in the zone and getting shots to the net. They did a good job of that, too. I think natural did a pretty good job of trying to keep them to the perimeter for the most part, but Either way, how the lightning? I think own most of the possession in the first period. They had some dangers looks. I love the second shift right after the Cirelli Gold. Matthew Joseph's comes down the ice right away and gets a nice chance on that, too, And he's been impressive obviously to watch all season, but All in all, really good. McElhaney looked great, and I thought the second power playing it really stood out to just great puck. Movement and circuit show for three or four great chances, just a little more traffic in part of the net, and maybe one of those goes in Haley. It's never a bad play to get the puck on nets. That's what's really did but give credit to cologne for retrieving that puck and winning the puck battle and dropping it back, too, so really for that goal. Yeah, Those two have so much great chemistry. They've obviously played together for maybe three years now, since they really came into the league, and you know in the postseason, they play together. Sara Lee's first playoffs on do you? They just They work off each other really? Well, they know when to pressure their smart players. They anticipate the play well. And it seems like they have a very good feel for where each other is on the ice at all times, and usually it's cerulean on their first in this time, like you said Alex Killorn, great heads up play and Sara Lee just putting it on net part of the game plan, and it Ends up taking. I'm not sure if it ended up redirecting off a stick in front or anything, but it just kind of blindly caught Renay off guard from outside the hash mark. You know when you're on the fourth line, you want to contribute offensively, But you certainly don't want to get scored on and we saw Matthew Joseph Kaylie and that first period on a four on one by the Preds busted back and break up a play. It's those little things. I think that The coaching staff recognizes but also wants to see and Matthew Joseph certainly wants to stay in the lineup, and he's going to do that with plays like that, isn't it? For sure. You know, he's somebody we talked about again and again already this season. He's someone I think he's versatile. His speed is such a weapon and he can move up and down the lineup, which just key John Cooper. You know, he loves players like that. And we've seen we've seen Matthew Joseph in his rookie year. Move up and down the lineup. And you know, he proved to Julian Breeze body. Somebody who can Playing different positions and have success. So I'm really pleased to see what he's been able to do so far, and I think his confidence is back where it needed to be in after taking some timeto really work on his game. It's certainly paying dividends right now. Daily. Great job will do it again during our second intermission report. Thanks, Greg. Kelly Kelly is joining us right there. Hey, Tampa Bay. "I said let's back up let let's use the room and not again, go back in self promotion sense of practicing what I preach with the book that I wrote what can we learn together? Yes. I think the big thing for the relationship is coaches or sometimes looked at as having all the solutions. That's true. And the other piece is not having. The buy in from teachers because they often may say will you don't know how I teach. So the biggest in my opinion. The biggest thing that I would say to answer question is take two weeks and be very clear with us because when there is no clarity in in a school. It becomes other people. Tell your story takes two weeks in say, I wanna learn how you teach let me come into your classroom for half hour at a lesson launch a lesson closure for every teacher in. That's just part of the culture. It's not that they're not doing their job. It's not that they're not doing as much as other educators. It's the day are gathering the information of the many so that they can be a support in once you learn how different teachers some teachers ask rapid fire questions. Some ask one big question. Some love kids who call out some insist on hand raising in teaching no one way is right because the teacher in the classroom is the expert. So the coach has to know the different learning styles. Yes. And my. Recommendation is work with the building administrator in say, the why of coaching is to support learning into sport teachers in that. So how is it coach gonna do it? If they've never been in the classroom. It's just setting up for failure. Yes. So allow jer allow that two weeks or whatever, you know, different schools may be longer shorter. However, it is have time were coaches are learners because teachers are going to open their doors a little bit more. If you can come in and say, you know for myself, Matt like your presentation style, you do a lot of call and response in you do projects, here's some examples of how you could help in this area versa teacher who may do a lot more sit and think in in a different style. Now, neither style is wrong. Or right. You know, however fits the students, but the coach has to be adaptable. And they cannot do that without the background knowledge. Gallison, so good Matt you have four sessions at FETC first off now insane. It's crazy. Busy time. And and they all I mean, just listening to you talk. I can already I have a sense. They're going gonna be amazing. What are you? What are you going to be sharing this year at BTC? Maybe maybe talk about one or two of the sessions something you're really excited to talk about. Well, there's there the four sessions three are very different in different lanes in one of the things that I really like about the role that that that I'm in as I don't do one thing. Really? Well, just be honest with you. But I feel like I can do a lot of things fairly. Well, so one of the things that I'm gonna talk about his transitioning schools how to take school district from the stone age to the digital age in what are the steps to get there? Not just because it didn't snow this year, and we have extra money and we buy fifty ipads it. What is what is your vision? What is your action plan, and what is your reflection on that? I'm not I'm not someone who does a strategic plan that were drives me crazy because I don't know anyone has ever made a dumb plan. Why do we need the words strategic like it's if you're gonna make a plan it better be good? I talk about blueprint for success. What are you doing? So that's gonna be one of the things that I talked about is how to really transform a district into launch some of these tools to match the current culture because I don't know what your. Ours is, but here's some strategies to do it. The second one is for teachers is how to create active learning in your classroom. Similar to the last question. You just asked is how will we creating utilize these tools, I'm actually bringing in some some vendors like Bundy new zella in paradox in other other tools that I've made connections with the vendors who I really liked the tools not in the sales pitch at all. But to say, here's some of the options out there..

"Title one classroom reminds subject area because that's the goal. The goal is not to have students have their best one year. It's to make sure you're creating a classroom that represents the dynamic world around us yet E N. Did they move on with the strategies of creative thinking to be problem solvers so to get back to your question to make how to make that a little bit more possible? Think I'm hoping to empower leaders with some of the book content in the book in a lot of leadership discussions. I have the events is that as leaders we have to get out of the way, the best place for our teachers to feel that they can take risks is let them get out of the way the support them and really facilitate the next steps in part of that is also been very clear what it so when we talk about the role that I have our goal is not to launch one to one. It's not for kids use computers. It's to create a classroom environment. That's rich in creativity in models the world around us. Kids have digital things flying around them every day. They go into Kohl's. And they order sneakers on a huge ipad. They are not saying essentially, right? The kiosk go pick the sneaker you want. It's not even on the floor next thing. You know, it's at your house got it. They go to school and don't have that same level of comfort in familiarity with whatever content than we very difficult for them to learn so bringing that power bus. During fact, your question bringing that collaboration is being vulnerable leaders allowing teachers to access their strengths not just the one thing they do really well and really ask questions. Can I do better? How this is a profession. Yes. Some big boy I like feedback in I've learned more from some of the feedback I've gotten than just really continuing to do things. I do well in only do those Ottosson I tell you. I I love administrators who talk about allowing teachers to to screw things up to fail because. Because you don't honestly you don't get that very often. Then I came from a culture a school culture that did not permit teachers to fail at all. Like, you not you could not make mistakes. And I'm doing a lot of talks this this coming kinda conference season. And one of the big ones. I'm doing mad is is about you know, teachers, we almost have a lot of attack tech tools now that are really safety us like we're really easy. Not you. Can't screw them up like clip graders flippered is pretty user friendly and easy to implement Google docs, Google Drive the collaboration. This stuff isn't hard were were really comfortable. Now, I think a lot of teachers are super comfortable using some of these tools, and we've I I am genuinely concerned about teachers getting into these comfort silos again. Now that now that they've we've gone through this phase of development. And now in twenty nineteen we really have some awesome tools, and we got a lot of teachers under super comfortable. I'm worried about them being fearful of what's next like when I and I'm gonna talk about things like AR VR and robotics and games base learning and not just like not just like who'd and stuff like that. But like actual video game based learning and stuff that is actually things that you know, teachers are legitimately afraid of. I guess as an administrator. How are you, overcoming your fear of teachers who mess up I guess are or when things don't go, right? And you get parents, for example that come to you and say, you know, this..

"There were two really interesting sources of anxiety in this that that I wanted to talk about one was anxiety as relates to children's future. So what they think they wanna be when they grow up. And and I think that this is one of those things that I felt like I was really good at this. And this is I think the solution to this from an educators point of view is to re frame the the the concept of what kids do when they grow up. I'll tell you. I again, I know a lot of kids who knew what they I wanna be a doctor. I want to be a lawyer. I wanna and and what I always tried to do especially with the kids who wanted to be programmers or scientists or whatever it's to reframe their learning. Yeah. So it wasn't so much focused on. On in what they're gonna do fifteen years from now. Yes. But you know, I say, you know, that's awesome. You're really interested in in in in physics in rocketry. And whatever it was let's let's talk about that stuff a lot more than and so that you become passionate about it. And and so, you know, this reframing of it. So that it wasn't something that they were doing. So that they can do something twenty years from now, which you know, seems crazy but something they would do now. So that they would enjoy now and enjoy their learning and have fun doing it. It was about reframing that that proposition of what they wanna do when they grow up to be more present in what they're doing at the moment. You know what I'm saying? Absolutely. Yep. And we've learned I mean, if you go back and listen to that Dodd wet trick interview. He has a really compelling argument, basically, stating that in the future are skids are gonna have multiple career. Ears in a variety of different things, even Mike and I had shared this experience in this is twenty nineteen imagine in twenty years from now in twenty forty how quickly you will have to adjust to the different professions that you will be doing, and what are the skills that you need in order to be able to do, you know, kind of a shift from one profession to the other. So saying I'm gonna be this is a very old school way of thinking. Instead of I want a I love the the the reframing of that to say what problem I am. I gonna solve with skills. Do I need to just basically be a better human, you know, those kinds of things, and those are the things that we should be focusing on at school steps stressing kids out with you know. You're going to career kind of talk, you know, in those kinds of things that is causing exile at our students, and we just spent a little bit of time talking about financial literacy in one of the pieces in this. Article was kids today live with the baggage of their parents, economic anxieties. And I thought this was super interesting. I mean. It's no secret that people in their thirties and early forties now are living quite a bit different existence in terms of financial stress in then how hard it is just to get by. I mean, my wife, and I were making like our income. Canadian is is in like it's close to two hundred thousand dollars a year, and it is still hard to just live. You know, two cars and a how Razi like that normal. What you would associated as a quote unquote, normal life is just it's just as hard. I I mean, it's it's not it's not easy. And we try to shield our kids from talking about money. But I mean, they know when we can't afford to buy Warren, WalMart or toys R us or wherever we are. Yeah. We still toys R us in Canada, by the way. Yeah. We're we're wherever we are in Isaac. Once you know that video game that just came out, and it's eighty dollars 'cause eighty dollars is how much video games cost right now. It's whatever. So I'll start it. You know, and we just can't afford it that week 'cause food and what isn't. Right. And so but kids are way more aware of those situations. I think now than they ever were and they're living through those..

"And teens to sleep is eight to ten hours. And according to the survey in one of the articles were gonna post in the show notes. Fifty seven percent of teenagers say they don't get enough sleep. Even they recognize it, right grand. Like, they're they're just exhausted. And sixty seven percent saying they're just getting about five to seven hours a night, five hours. Like, I mean, I live on it. And I'm sort of used to it. I'm not saying I feel great 'cause I don't but. Amine, these kids, you know, you need to sleep way more than five to seven hours a night and Deloittes it's really taking a physical mental emotional toll on our students. And you know, we we had a I remember hearing stories about students who weren't getting enough sleep in teachers would just let them sleep in class. You know, if it is not critical. I mean 'cause they weren't getting sleep and they were stressed out. And it was really mentally and emotionally harming them. So we need to we need to do a better job as educators. This some of this a lot of this. I'll be honest is our fault that educate its educators fault. And there is no empathy for homework. They say oh homework teaches you discipline would self control and self regulation in our mind. I'm like, all right. You know? Cable. We can probably learn this and other places to about how about teaching it in athletics and in sports in high places to build to learn it. Yes, right. I mean, so I'm not buying the the reasons for especially make work homework. It just makes me sick and to be so angry. And you know, I tell you I worked at a place that was really good at make work homework. So it's Imperia dating. And so I made it a point, you know, when when I was teaching to to say, I don't give out homework, and parents would be like, yes. And we love you for it. Because we have so much homework to do when I first started. I was giving out homework a little bit. It was still like it was like video game related homework in graphic design, homework and stuff like that. But I had kids coming back and saying Mr. Wasserman. They didn't do my homework because I was. Up till eleven o'clock doing math. Yeah. This is this is a great five. Oh my goodness. Right. And I'm like. Are you kidding? Like e got. So I I would like literally go talk to the great five teacher and say you can't have your kids up until eleven o'clock at night doing math. No, it's just it's it's bad bad, bad, reckless. Yes. So and I mean, this is why they're consumed with egg anxiety agony that that's to. But they are there completely consumed with anxiety a lot of them, and we add a young age to it's nice to yacht. Just it's not just relegated to two teenagers were seeing numbers. And I don't have them in front of me. But I know it's it's it's true. We're seeing huge amounts of of students of elementary level students being diagnosed with like, depression and anxiety and stuff like that. We're seeing it so much more than ever and being war. We are partly responsible for this. So we need to do a better job right at minimum. Just take a look at your practices in say is it is this something that I really need a sign his homework, or is it something that we as a class can actually work on together. Collaboratively as a whatever it might be. And we actually will get more out of it than a student. Having to do that at home it. We're not even accounting for parents who have to work second or third shift. So they might not actually be there during that time. So a kid is by himself or herself and having to do this work which distressing them out having the stay up late it just a combination of different things. So different people's family situations that made that time is so precious. Let's not take that away with frivolous activities that we decide our homework. We're gonna teach them something with that. This other article that will put in the show notes that was written as editorial on vox dot com..

"When when I when I thought I saw this because this is kind of one of his had initiatives kinda thing is this this financial literacy piece, I think it's incredibly important. We know that people are living with insane amounts of debt. You know, even you and I mean, we we both have dad here your student loans. I mean, we've talked door right in people are living within in some of it is born out of kind of normal necessity, even though we can get into a conversation about student loans. We're pretty far. FD? So we have probably stronger opinions on it than than others. But I mean, being I didn't I tell you. I didn't learn a damn thing from school about budgeting or finance, and I didn't learn it. Unfortunately, from my parents, either made neither so and and to be honest, I you know, I would say that my parents weren't the best with their money in hindsight. Now now that I'm thinking about it either. So they wouldn't have been super good examples other than the dining, they would I did kinda thing. Right. Yes school. Yes. So when Al I'll give you a little risky when I was eighteen I went out and got a credit card because you could just give one it. I didn't have any. I didn't have any knowledge of when I was like all cool. I have a credit card. Yeah. I guess I guess what? I did I maxed that beast out. And I was in college. And I didn't even have a job. I mean a had shopping. What what do you call the what you just work service kind of ten hours a week kind of work service thing at at thing was like at that point five dollars an hour. Four twenty five an hour that was in one thousand nine hundred four. So I was earning four dollars an hour working ten hours a week. That's forty dollars might as the you're at I blew through. Maybe it was a five hundred dollar credit card. And I had no way no way. No way to pay it. So of course, right away right off the bat. Eighteen years old. I ruined my credit. And and it was of course, it's totally my fault. But I did never had the idea the concept of like, you probably don't wanna do this at. Here's why you don't have any money. You're having income. You can't just go blow money you're gonna have to pay that back in. You don't tear is the part that I didn't really understand is that that could have repercussions for years down the road. I I don't me. don't me. I tell people all the time. It takes it takes you. You know, six weeks to ruin your credit, and it takes two decades to fix it. Yeah. Tune Ben God that I actually did end up later on you know, what's ahead a career. And then I was in reestablishing, my credit, and now everything is created everything either there, but that will be a lesson that I I sure talked to my kids about, but we should be talking about this at school. Like, you just said, it's totally relevance. Hot topic that kids need to know that credit card companies will target you in you turn of age, and they will a lot of them. Give you credit even though you may not. Something smart subdue for a student because. Yeah, it's crazy. Ed, Ed, lots of lessons learned there and painful lessons learned 'cause later on you're like oh Bank. That's that. That was that good of a decision to blow through those five hundred dollars or whatever it was. You know, I am actually has a financial literacy curriculum like a full out curriculum document like in our curriculum documents are pretty extensive..

"And then the third one that I in the reason why I like it is because of professional development at least at the school that I was at in. It sounds like in this article that they're going to do something similar here. We had once a month that they off the Friday the Monday, you actually had a full day of professional development, which is fantastic for all kinds of things, instructional, coaching technology integration. Whatever it is that you need to be able to cover to have a full day once per month is way way more than tons of other district states have throughout the country. So it's not all districts in Colorado. But there are quite a few that are moving to this four day school week. So it'd be interesting to hear their results because the biggest fear I think with the district leaders, or parents, whoever might be as that you're not going to be able to cover enough material in eighth grade. You're not going to be. To, you know, those missed out hours because usually like the way that we did it we did at eight to four pm you're not going to be able to cover enough of that content. But that's actually not the case. I think that's the way that we experienced that. We are students were refreshed every time they came back to school on Monday because they had Friday Saturday Sunday off if felt like they were ready to go ahead and go again, and it was only a four day week. So it just it felt like it was the time at school was more valuable. I that's best way to be able to put it. I mean, if this means teachers use the time that they cause I mean, it's no secret that teachers spend class time grading assignments and writing lesson plans in writing in their debacle. And and you know, all of this other stuff, I mean, certainly initiatives get put on them events planning. Whatever it is. They have to do. All of this stuff gets put on on them, if they can use the time they won't be spending doing that in the classroom because they have the extra day to to kind of do it. That's a winning in of itself. It means that teachers are going to have more time in the classroom to spend, you know, walking around the class being with the kids engaging with them and talking to them about what they're doing. It's it's gonna be it could potentially be better. And I know that it's born out of a necessity to to lower, you know, overall costs in and stuff like that. But I mean, if if you're gonna if you're gonna do it, let's figure out a way to do it and do it effectively. And I feel like some of these groups like what you did in your experience Ray able to. Put a silver lining on it and make it actually something that made a lot of sense for them. Right. Yeah. And then the other part that's interesting about the article two is for whatever reason the superintendent who was interviewed also talked about being able to recruit the best teachers out there too. So it's kind of a recruiting method to and I would say to pretty good recruiting tool to say, hey, we have a four day school week versus a normal five day school week that is actually a great recruitment tool. And you know, there's other things that go along with it where your location is at how far you would have to drive if you were the greater Denver area. How long your commute would be to be able to get to this specific school district. But I think it's a great plan, and it would be interesting to hear their experience or listen to their experience like one year after like, what have you learned? Would you continue with this? If you you know, if you could go back, would you have? Done it. And then what can we do to be able to make a better we were going to replicate this? You know, what do we do to be able to go ahead and do something like this in our local schools? Of so so speaking of news something else came across my my desk this week. And it's this Bill that South Carolina is putting forward to mandate students, take a personal finance or financial literacy classes. Yes, I think it's awesome. I this is actually I thought of Don wetter..
