"Rides to just been like blanked We actually ran a couple online events. There was one event. We ran Last year run when things started yet better before it got worse again and we realize comfortable live events but We did a leukemia. lymphoma society event. The smashed expectations raised over forty k. It's first of that Word at a tank eight events. Even we've done a couple of saint jude online events through faded betas. Well let something that. I want to probably vertically integrated on eventually and has online poker site so that these charities will have an easier time just kind of having one stop. Shopping like our whole bowl is vertical integration. In everything where we're getting a software to bring we give smart which is a comet charity silent auction software that also works for selling revising hat on some tickets for events thanks we're trying to create our own version of that. That will not only be more geared toward our pogue purposes needs but also cut the credit card processing fees because three and a half with gift smarter and with stride We can link Stripe directly to the accounts now. And we'll be able to get it down to two point processing fees for nonprofits for visa and mastercard and plan on buying twenty tables six thousand chips and eventually running an on site so that we just don't even have to hire anyone asked anyone else for anything to be able to provide the services for beneficiaries awesome meant that sounds. That sounds really cool and really exciting. Hopefully hopefully we get back to some semblance of normality in the next year ish six months to a year funny. You mentioned spayed. Tom wheaton is going to be coming on to the broadcast tomorrow afternoon. So that episode will probably be released directly after after this one almost at high. I will telling you said what's up and you know. We skipped over a lot. And like i sometimes sometimes happens on. This show is actually prone to happen. Is i asked one question. That question took like an hour and a half. Because like i say you're rich and illustrious poker journey and we skipped over many many years right. We probably could have done many more our so here at the end advocate to put that in there virga trouble. You had a kid you did. Congratulations and let's if you would like we book around to for some time in the near future and we can kind of circle back and ask more of these questions that i have. I'm sure the audience would love it. But before we part ways. I will ask a couple lightning round questions and then you can direct people to the gop in case they want to be involved. So yeah if you could wave a magic wand. Change one thing about poker. What would you change norman. Chad have had yelling re interest to reentry weird going there anyway. I dunno norman chad. He's he's a character As somebody that has never interacted with norman chad. I think the first thing that he said to me was like it was like an in an email and it was something along the lines of. I don't want to go on your second rate stupid poker. Podcast i was like damn as pretty as pretty hardcore norman and then afterwards he's like along with figured he would say that but then get on it he did get on it. Of course he did. He's like. I was just kidding. Like i get that all the time. People don't understand i'm joking. I'm like because there's no context to the joke. We go from one place to another. We've never met each other now. I just assume he's always joking. No matter how horrible the things he says is he He's not one away. I which dreams like talk smack even know. He really gave a crap. While i was on a bay. Why are you stopping by twitch stream. Thank you. I was honored. Even though he was breaking my balls. That's what he does. That's that's what he does these days so getting rid of the injuries you can go straight to matt savage and thank him for the re entry situation and mt. Although i feel like eventually somebody would have stumbled upon it. I'm just going to go with cheating. i would. I would have to say a no collusion dumping the real time simulator stuff like it's fine to study with simulators but using realtime assistance is like the death of all over agreed I will go with cheating. General is being the one thing. I wish you could change it I'd like to think that it's not in every game that it's less common than we might think. But a may be being overly optimistic and hoping that Wendy going on. Obviously i think there's plenty going on. But i also think that they're still like the games are still beatable and degrade her still win right to be had and very high win. Rates even at the highest stakes. My private coaching students play in those streets and the games are so good although you know there are times where people will sort of tank on a trivial decision. That's a little bit foreign and You know the question marks always start popping up in my head like the main main edge. That i've had in cash games. All these years is like. I'm really good when things get dirty and deepen the decision tree. I'm good problem solving logic in my way through a hand and sometimes people start taking in spots that are like shouldn't be taking spots but are also kind of foreign and my mind immediately goes to like are they getting some kind of assistance and this basically like eliminates my edge like dole's it substantially if they could look something up and oh. I don't know what to do here. But i've got a guide that will show me the way it's like millions the scam but how many millions would i be up. Never got cheated once. I'd like to get more. But then i find out more more sickos or multi accounting. Emt's the way drum would redraw big as they do on work else. I would also say that. I think multi accounting is a big issue. And i'm not in the streets. I've just heard through the grapevine that it's a thing that is pretty common practice unfortunately true. We have lightly was malicious than most forms of cheating but still white scummy ebbed away where rates from people who are honest and one account like supposed to. Yeah i mean. It's unfortunate and i know that katie stone's talked about it on twitter some but yeah it's i don't know i have no idea how to police that i have no idea what even is involved in multi accounting like vpn wise or how they can crackdown. Realtime assistance is another thing. I have no idea how to police. Because what do you do like how how do you. How do you go about doing doing such a thing all right so if you direct to billboard every poker players gotta drive pass on their way to see know. What.

"I just i really. I didn't necessarily have this like idea blowing up. It was something. I thought may eventually happened but i was still kind of happy to continue playing for a living like just donate a few hundred hours a year and some of my money to help set up the cost. Because we weren't we weren't doing things to the extent that we are now like saint jude gala. Which is a massive undertaking different The so basically get that kind of segues into it. While so the saint jude had been going on for five years up to that point at started dating to rounding founded the event in vegas around the same time if it was twenty fourteen or twenty thirteen around the same time it started. Cop and We were like friendly. I didn't know that while but then we text me the night of the shero at. We're doing a beverage dimaggio children's hospital in florida and the event had like three hundred fifty people ever was posting out there having a blast and like you saw of it new texted me is like hey i want you to Help takeover as chair for my saint jude event. And i was like okay. Why signed up so babbel's kind of attorney for cop. Because i took that event on and was like okay. I guess. I could do for a year chair. This event and my plan was to just keep doing that. And i talked to ron new. First order is for me. It was like. Why aren't the gold nights. Entre era vet aground. Who is like a superfan has sixteen season tickets like considered buying one percent of of owner before they became a team and like. Why aren't you trying to get autographed jerseys. If a player appearances whatever you got from the hash whatever it is like they have all the things we need like no matter how they wanna support it. There's a way that we can make this work. And he contacted them like hey. I talked to the nights and they want to. They want to sponsor the event but they wanna run their own charity poker tournaments to and they don't know how the and i grew up playing hockey. I a die hard hockey fan and arts tickets for the gold nights. It was just absolutely floored of this. Like i have not been nervous. I can honestly say this like i. Don't get nervous for final tables. If i get in my own head. It's only a break away from the table. When i'm at a big final table. I have the ability to out thoughts about the money. How life changing be how much i need a page. Give my life situation. Whatever it is and just barely folks on the game like apply everything. I do like like criticized the nurse. I got straight nervous for. This meeting was like i can't believe on. Nhl team is asking me to do this because one of my dreams was like. Hey i wish. I could do event for the garden of dreams salvation for the new york rangers. That was the team. I grew up watching head like that was like a pipedream actually have fun. I had an in didn't have tried to use it. didn't work. never got the call back whatever when we tried to do it. Event with garden of dreams. But they're actually coming to me like hey we need your help. It was absolutely surreal for paying and it was kind of a turning point. Because when i met with them they were like all right. We want you to run our events but we also have a sister foundation. Cold vicodin does scholarships and grants for families of fallen soldiers. And that's the owner. The golden knights kind of like had project of mike his love because he was in the army. And that's how he likes to give back so it went from light okay. Well we're doing these three events a year and spending one hundred hours on each event to are now we have like six to eight events year and oh by the way. The raiders are also talking gold nights. I want to a see as ob now too so november. Twenty hundred nineteen. We did a base. Go by or a raiders foundation charity serious poker atlanta. That's when i was like all right. Well this is something that In something like a lot of nonprofits need because hoeger took over for golf as the number one fundraiser for charity. A few years back and that's great but at the same time you don't have people know this is how we should structure the event. We should make it like a little bit of play during the re by our. Make turbo after that you. The sea judah event. Before i got there. I don't think that they had an aggressive new. Do the structure or he did not look closely. Don't talk about the one that have been event that ended at three thirty in the morning. Old man brutal in that was also one of the things is like. I didn't realize how effective are other events. Were but a lot of it comes from borgata in hollywood being amazing judy And giving us sweetheart deals not charge. As for a lot of stuff they would usually charge thousands of dollars for but when we started looking at other charity events. And the effectiveness of it. It just wasn't there. They're spending on like bela celebrities flying in and like they don't they're not paying them appearance fees but like at the cost Quickly after put up like people for flava a hotel for two nights like and a lot of things just weren't worth it and that's kind of become my job is to go in for existing of events and actors console figure out where we should be spending where we need to cut spending so we actually doubled the revenue that saint jude. Of the first time i ran i. I didn't get involved until twenties until a few weeks before twenty seventeen and wanted to like given a get the feel of the event see how and they raised one hundred eighty grand. But it's a. It's a pretty expensive event iran with your two hundred fifty like dinner for two hundred and fifty casino. Even when you're really good deals discounts and things like the bill ends pretty quickly so I was very proud to that. The first time i was venture for we raised three hundred fifty nine thousand and we actually had the next iteration of that event scheduled for april fourth. Twenty twenty like one month after lockdown got serious really kind of sad that that didn't come before wisha because we put a ton of work at but now we're which we look at the calendar. I wanna say it's earch may twenty four th a saturday next year. We're going to have that event. It's looking like yes. Saturday may twenty first is going to be the st jude. Against all odds gallup's they're also doing golf portion of it on friday the twentieth now their new twist were working on kind of helpless deb from three hundred sixty k. For the five hundred k. And eventually a million dollars without event law it's going to be segment your I see i see the effects of lockdown now as it relates to how you spend your energy because i assume there's been no charity series of poker events since lockdown started.

"So it's definitely a lot more satisfying to me to do well as president founder of espn. Make sure that every event is fun for everyone. Involved represents charity. Well you know and raises a lot of money for the charity. So that's always been kind of a lot of fun for me in that. When i set this up. I thought it was just going to be this real easy thing where i just tell the tuxedoed around this event ever going show up but realized how much it was gonna take in terms of operations marketing. Learning how to do all these different things savage. He didn't give you any hints or clues savage answers all my questions. Savage wasn't like running it though it was it like if is this hard to run a tournament series savage. He just three days it up and they all come right. That's how it works. So yeah i mean that was that actually. Kinda led to one of the best compliments. I've ever gone back for standing. The lawyer is Not only like basic lawyer. But also just one of the smartest at like like real sarcastic. Dry weighty funniest people. I've met and like he his winning when we first met started talking about the sap because we wanted him to help us he's now on our board But after one of the first meetings ever looked into what we do however the king bout he asked me like developed other people like helping like I did most of these things myself. Just occasionally have friends. Volunteers of graphic design or have to ask somebody else how to do this or act as i know it falls area of expertise but like it was just kind of like a one man show for the first few years when i was volunteering and Just kind of trying to get like the guidance needed from outside he's like looked at me like As like your savant not expect that and that coming for like one of the smartest people i know like. I didn't really think it was that big of a deal. But when i look back at look at like the current operations lists like That in a moment but basically like working out of the office of micro marketing company that has a full services team where one person to web design person. The light setting up all the email marketing another person doing all the social media other person doing oliver breath and as we streamline this and tried to put all pieces together realize like everything you need to do. We come up with the giant list of order of operations. Everything that needs you thought. And i'm just like backtracking About like i had to kind of just learn how to do this. Ground out with like a little bit of mentorship from people here. They're people volunteer. Like i'm slow on graph design so that was always something where we always needed. Volunteers had a for services Volunteers but for the most part it was just kinda like trial and error and trying to figure out the best way to do all these things. So the first event we did was for three square food bank at planet. Hollywood twenty fourteen. And we're we netted netted we didn't we didn't charge that. Many of our expenses paid like probably spent a couple grand on it All the setup costs and everything but They netted fifteen thousand dollars. The first event and i got a phone call from the ceo of foodbank thanking me. And i was like well to be honest. I appreciate your call. But i'm a little disappointed myself because i thought we were going to raise at least twenty five. He laughed at colby crazy. And the next year we raised forty two thousand save event and he called me again and he told me that he no longer thought i was crazy. Arche wanted to set up a dinner to talk about how we continue to grow this thing over the years. Yeah i got his attention. You're not crazy how much you think you can make next year. So that's when. I realized that we were really on something. This is all predicated on the generosity of Obviously like on the end. I was doing everything myself but like a nothing happens. If we don't have people in seats we don't have sponsors paying for sponsorship packages layers firing off revise. That's the most fun part. Most of our events are three hundred or five hundred a big gallo of dinner type of a and people just fire off hundred dollar revise left and right we have an entire table olive blind at like nine. People all agreed firsthand. All we had a new job later. So that's kind of the best part for me is knowing that we represented the charity. Well said everything up properly were just. They're having a good time. Have experienced firing off rubai after reba yet Always it's interesting that we live in such a cutthroat world that is filled with so many giving and empathetic human beings just so many good people that just live to give back. I just had andrew barbara on the podcast. And he said that whenever he started playing for charity and like donating portions of his winnings to. I think it's Are g right. Changed everything it was just like a whole paradigm shift of like now. He's excited to go play now. He wants to win more money because he gets donate more and just kind of changed everything from this sort of like. We only have our own self interest in mind forever. We feel we always feel. I think most of us. I i guess i can't speak for everyone but we always feel a little bit like this is very selfish endeavor where i'm kind of just serving myself and we want to give back and yeah it's just great hearing these stories of you guys that like you put your money where your mouth is and you invest not only your money but your life force right your time your energy your blood your sweat your tears from somebody. That's you know trying to grow a for profit business. i can say that like growing. Any sort of business is as shit ton of work and there's nobody to bail you out. There's nobody to teach you like you have to learn everything kind of on your own. It's trial by fire and to do it for something that is raising money for something worthy. Something worthwhile men. That's just. It's an amazing story in highly highly. Commendable shipping. So things skyrocket eventually right things kind of go stratospheric. That was so like. I said the volunteer. The first four years twelve events one one at each place risk three hundred fifty a and in two thousand seventeen big runners news. It was the night of our hardrock hollywood at. Let's put this in like contacts here that's one every three months for three years. And like what's like the time commitment to run one of these these guys hours so i was only putting it like three hours a year. Which is enough. That i could you know. Do it out of the kindness of my heart in. It didn't cut enough into my hours of playing poker. Plus i wasn't. I didn't advocate. I had a lot more time on my hands. In general so that was that was just like kind of a fun thing for me to do on the side. So that i feel like i'm doing more in general and it was. It was supposed to go on that way..

"Brutal Who's a bill fritz. Tennessee senator yeah. 'cause i'm from tennessee. So i know. I know that dude that did did the iga. It has brought shame on my home state ran bass so then in the middle of the aftershock. Earthquakes i decide. I am over costa rica. i was staying with friends anyway. And just like chipping in so it was real easy for Guys on wanna die. I'm out so i once i get down to two tables for my session. I sat there trying to figure out how to get a last minute. Amsterdam to go. Stay with another friend out there and just like they wanted thirty five hundred for direct light. And i still don't know how this word i found a way to get a multi multi wave light Gets amsterdam back to the us for thirteen hundred. Like how do you want thirty five hundred for this one flight and you will reduce the price by twenty two hundred. If i take these other two flights i just it was very strange deal. The flying world is is very strange. I've only been out of the country one time. It was canada to like. Set up a vpn after black friday. It is a horrible experience. I mean just the worst. I've never been out of the country. I didn't know how to deal costumes. They asked me like why. What am i there for for like three days. I don't know. I think yeah. I think i'm and i'm like the worst liar to like. I tried to move to toronto. I'm just checking out the weather in january. It's not very good. They were skeptical. pretty much. almost didn't let me through. And so i was already terrified out of my mind so i didn't actually get anything. Set up wallows in canada. But when i bought the flight i remember it was like a grand and it went from like atlanta to toronto and back but then i found another flight from like huntsville and it was like three hundred bucks but like there was like a layover in atlanta on the way back and i'm like how does this doesn't make sense like it's the same plane in the same route. So i just like hit the layover and just like got off the plane and left left there for three hundred bucks but like i don't understand the business model of flights i've heard the that's a good hack but if you do it a bunch of times like an airline Really I've never done that. What it's always tempting assurance. How would if i had the opportunity to book there. You go home. You get this thirteen hundred dollar like round trip flight to amsterdam and all around what happened with that. managed to get them for thirteen hundred. I've moved to amsterdam that night. Just like stayed up on my seven. Am flight and just was. I was out of their instantly and started staying with a friend at amsterdam. Like bounce around to different agee's once you're in europe. It's kinda like traveling around the states. There's not that much customs restrictions and stuff so it's real easy to get last minute flights. That aren't that expensive or trains or whatever and it moves a hell of a lot of about six or eight months in europe street kind of got to know amsterdam pretty well Was also just a lot of fun to be able to have that opportunity. While i was still like young and have no gates said life was a lot different than of though then i ended up coming back to the us Because i was dating someone and you know. Kinda didn't wanna be europe the entire time having a long distance relationship across the atlantic Than when i got back. That was sort of when i was ready to start the charity serious poker because when i was nineteen in college and i started getting into the game. I was the last president Entity at my college and had done like a ten dollar rely on browser tournament. God like four or five tables the door and got donated prizes so that all the money will go to help. Jack raised about a thousand bucks and ever had a blast was a lot of running so it was always in the back of my mind when i started playing for a living. I wanted to be able to you know. Support food banks habitat for humanity. Those kind of an wants I knew that saint jude was already doing at event or some events and wanted to eventually do stuff with them as well so i was sponsored by starting around when he fourteen inch when i came back here i was sponsored by borgata because they started their online poker site didn't know what they were doing. Wanted someone who was aboard a new the players to be kind of player liaison out them figure out at a setup tournaments and of a kind of nuance difference between running. Live stuff running online. So so i was all sponsored by hardrock hollywood at the same time. Just kind of leveraged a position with those two companies. They were just obeys to us and put us up with Basically like free food free marketing light minimal or no rate and would just help us set it up to where we were spending our money on some of the operating costs they were doing a lot of it for us like everydollar as direct habitat or food banks without Recouping expenses dance huge. That's great did you. This was you founded. Cs p like this is your baby. Yes so i founded it. And the matt savage and mike raisin obviously savages executive tour director for the world book tour mike raisins a businessman from chagas that helps set up the the jv pritzker. Who's now the governor of illinois. He has an annual holocaust museum event. That raises seven figures. And he was kind of that up those friend of mine. He was actually the one that i was talking to on the phone. That lake should take some time off. And i was like non gonna go on this massive heater. That is gonna win everything instead. It's more distractions so started in twenty fourteen. Spent twenty grand my money at fifteen grand. My friends money over the course of the first three years and we were is three hundred. Fifty thousand dollars for The charities and the i s annual events i fear of warriors. Then give me a sense of like the feeling of accomplishment of like running one of these events raising a bunch of money versus you know playing in a tournament and you know going deeper thinking it. I mean i will the the the adrenaline rush of winning tournaments. But it's also a selfish endeavor. Obviously depending on what you do with the money but it was always something that light as much fun as well as there was a level of that was filling in that. I knew that i wasn't like wasn't using by knowledge my ability by Intellect to do something that was really productive in the world. It wasn't benefiting people in any way.

"So where do where did we leave off in your story because we jumped around to your biggest online victory more areas of we kinda left off on my fox so the gog guys so we got quite a ways to go a lot of blurs together until black. Friday was just a lot of wandering around begging some other final tables blow skipped for. Let's get forward to black friday then. Black friday was interesting. I the managing a small table bit states riders and got oddly. Laki the one player who had one enough tournaments that i was staking him for a fairly high stakes. Scott a five eighty km. Nato then had a seventy case or two weeks before black friday at inhabited on stars instead of full tilt so that a giant chunk of wine network Being tied up in that black. Friday like i just kinda like was grateful for that. That was part of my first law process about black friday april. I just bought my house. Vegas december twenty ten. I've been so kind of backtracking Spent another year in atlantic city after that first few score a Big tournaments was backed by cliff after that the decided to merge vegas two thousand eight. But then i wanted to make sure that our loved it at. Let's lived there long term for. I bought a house bought a house on december twenty ten and then four months later black friday. It's so i mean it sucked. And i actually. I didn't even ratchet out. Because i was in idiot was doing well enough that i was just like l. Just let it sit there on occupied Or just had light friends like staying to watch my doggy stuff like that. But i moved to costa rica furlongs. That one of the more fun experiences in my life and definitely an interesting side benefit to black friday is that a kind of encouraged me to get out travel. More was so interesting about costa rica. it's a completely different way of life. it's third world country. Wherever seems way happier than everyone in the us and a change my perspective a lot just kind of seeing how poor happy a lot of people down there were arison to the bitter miserable and entitle like poker. Bros make a hundred k. A year and are miserable. They don't make three hundred k. I just use the best way to sort of summarize like kinda realization. I had there but it was also just an incredible place in terms of like nature and the stuff that they had do their. I mean it's it's Hurricane they are all through september murder w coop and of electrical wifi issues pretty frequently. But you get backup generators you get the building that different internet services da. You hope that a seven point. Six earthquake doesn't hit a couple of years later to while i was there so only cow second to ahead of ourselves so And you're you're taking my veil ability really to heart. Let's take our time. Yeah to figure out how to summarize all this and try to remember exactly how it all happened so every three months. I had to leave costa rica or rent place there but then like go play tournament. The us is family fly back shows. The still traveled around a decent amount. And then i had. I went down there two years later. Twenty eleven and was in a seven point six earthquake on the fourteenth sixteenth story building that was built a costa rican architects actors not a not american architectural standards. Are they better or worse madame. Ever go ahead of magic. That third country are are worse with this. But i mean it is built in a place. That's kind of used to having earthquakes so you would think that they would be ready for it It was seven point. Six of the building was allegedly built with standard eight point. Now it barely withstood a seven point six To no chance of eight point now. Right i made like our tv fellow. Stand like ten liquor bottles fell unlike slid their way up like a foot plus all our before the whole the whole Like building was violently shaking a few feedback fourth. I was like just getting to the. I woke up to this in the middle w and was trying to figure out what was going on at that was like a i think near a doorway of that i look. I can't find by flip. Flops in the doorway has nothing but alcoholic broken much doorway in. I am like this panoramic ruler. It's glass on two sides and it was just really really bad also deathtrap. My plan was to grab the air mattress of hold it on on top of me while i lay on the couch and hope that i don't die with the buildings That was kind of the point that i had got to of what i was about to do. If finally stopped shaking. I was like oh. We're gonna live fantastic. So there was a soon nabi awarding after that. So but i could get. I didn't never call her. And i hit my driver who lived inland to calm zone reasonably. So i'm not gonna argue with the guy. Those seem to be worth the fair. So i decided well it was the next day. Actually i was kinda perturbed by but that kept laying. W i took that day off from w but the next day will fired and we We had some aftershock raids. Five point five of which are a lot more tame. It just makes you a little bit nervous about what level it might get to. There was like serious. Structural damage like their giant cracks in the building itself after this was over with so we knew already like kind of not the best shipped in with after all that and for the podcast listener too by the way like the richter scale it scales up like exponentially right. It's like seven eight point. Zero is ten times worse than seven point o. difference seven point four in an eight point. Oh is like there's a major difference there like eight point. Oh is way worse than seven point. Seven point six. I think it ranks in like the top fiber and worst earthquakes of the year worldwide. Usually congrats to give you. I think that that's what i read after. This was all over You've achieved all the success in life only to be undone by a massive earthquake that crushes you completely and the irony is like i literally was thinking about you. I am ben black friday as potentially about name on the final thoughts in your mind. Thought about all this was going on us.

Let's just torture that guy for the rest of his life yet. Ten years later. I've playing tended to quarter i sit down and i'm like oh you might mclean the agony of defeat. This is just what he's known for forever just because they decided to put him on that montage. Yeah that's exactly. I felt i know he even knew who might proclaim was. I wasn't gonna make the reference. But i was basically like thinking myself. Do they really have to like by quickly. Did they want to be the wpa cheese agony guy. Because i don't need that title. I love publicity offered pass on that one. If i have an option weren't will not option. You opted in when you size away all your rights are torture my wife however they see that. Yeah yeah poor. Matt affleck he. He got the same treatment. Area got the same treatment and came on the podcast. Actually i i told him. I'm not going to ask you about it. You've talked about it so many times. I'm sure that like we're just going to skip over it. And 'cause you're more than that one bad beat you took in the main event more than that man. Yeah he's a nice guy he's a really great guy still breaks is ball's about with way heart or the i don't know that story adam friedman. I'm free way in a. I wanna say four men of while he he got strapped. Willard like qinghai philosophers. As i flushed and tried to find a folder in hold. Oh gosh and he like Crying calls sees the nuts literally cries his illiberal. Crying call he. He was crying and talking about how he is like. Odd played perfect for three days. And i get this is what i got blah blah blah alec digital pearl jam pearl. Jam had a breakdown like that too didn't he. I don't remember john. Turner i think he did these poker players. We're sensitive bunch. What's going on with life. Our starts out will walk or about hands. When i'm like stressed about finances or like how other stuff going on. It's like putting me on so for you to get to the table. It's harder to stay on uneven. He'll winter using poker and escape. Which is one of the reasons that i don't like to do it for sure. And doyle talked about that a very long time ago and one of his books they wrote. I don't think it was super system. Maybe it was the godfather program. I can't remember but one of those where his oldest daughter died and he just couldn't for like two years he couldn't win couldn't do anything you know. And it's like the macro when things go bad in the macro and you're dealing with that sort of those sort of situations you just can't play winning poker like your or you're also to be miserable wire while you're playing poker as well kinda ignored that advice and it went really well last year but in general. It's true i after. I said asserted saying that. I kind of remembered that. I had a weird stretch last year where A friend of mine called me to talk about somebody as something else and like was buying a piece some big tournament and he called me to talk about that at. I told him like one of the main things that was on. My mind was by great nephew. Who was to your. Yeah it was. Two years old lived in new jersey and add a muscle cancer. And we like he had gone. You've been in the hospital for a really long time. But that was on l. Patient chemo and seemed to be doing better. They had taken like the trait that they had put in out and then unexpectedly. The cancer spread to his final fluid. Doctor said there was nothing. Bak- do and then he only had like a week or two to live. And if they give them radiation it was just going to prolong life a month or terrorist going to be like extraordinarily painful for them. So i would. That was like during hardcore lockdown but a june of last year or the end of may last year and i had been really good about saying look completely locked down except way carefully shopping. Whatever and it was a weird spa because like it's the middle lockdown out. Like what am i gonna do play on my poker like there's nothing else for me to really distract myself with and nothing till i go out do. I can't run events that point for cs. Okay and it was kind of like a weird thing where One of my friends was like you know like a. You should probably just take some time off and like later. The stretch was like. I mean. I appreciated like i kind of agree. But like i have no other escape allen i needed and a propelled me to one of the most absurd heaters that ever had I won four tournaments in a week Three of them were like fairly big the biggest online. When i've ever had there was i think one of them was like the. Crt fifteen daily for like twenty three k. So i had the conversation with them on tournament on tuesday and then on thursday. I want like a big thirty revile. Wpa dot com for like fourteen gay and there were like something. Like hundred dollar hyper turbo for a little over three k. On friday or saturday and then sunday was the twenty six fifty one million on a cr. And i actually skip the previous twenty six fifty. Because i wasn't feeling that good about like my game and stuff and obviously was in a much better Place in terms of poker confidence in though i was still obviously super stressed out about the family and Ended up winning that for two hundred forty k. My biggest online. Or but i assume watchwords that were bigger But yeah it was kinda weird it was. It was still hard to put it out of my head. No matter how many tables i played or how much tried to myself but it was also really helpful Made it easier for me to takes time off and may take a road trip out to the east coast. We didn't wanna fly but pamuk where we also work knock either family jersey. So my wife One euro in the back seat and drove cross country. My nephew when we're on our way out there was a Defied or stop the drug with you and with you. Because i want to get out of jersey. Can't really blame you there..

"I knew that like i i. I can't remember exactly how. I was sure that i would be able to like in touch with them. One way or another get a connection to them so then they came down for like a series in atlantic city. Forgot and you say day so it's like it's also backs used of a business partner. Eric abor was referred to as she sheets. Got reports from the tool vernacular. Oh i don't know much about ntt's but i do know. Johnny backs and i do know of sheets. So i am i satellite and one white six satellite workout like a seat to the the twenty five hundred five in the ten k in the borgata series source. Still blamed alone was firing all of them and in the five gay. I had sheets on my right. Any introduced himself then. Light cliff game over and was just light. Hey blah blah blah. Like introduced himself was like were you playing under a different name before something because he came out of nowhere playing great. I think it was a blind that i was like under different. Ed four hours twenty one. But i was actually playing as all four twenty before i was twenty one and actually got caught by full. They like i may account for birthday. His i forgot. That stars was fine with you being eighteen that way till wanting to be twenty one so i changed my birth year by one Sent documentation to cash out like an idiot. Because i forgot that. I had lied to them. They were like hey did get your documents but we did notice that your birth year is of you. You probably would have made that mistake if you to finish your last year of college but you're exactly a couple accounting classes figured all this out so He said have you because you came out of nowhere playing great. I was just like oh shit. So then i end up playing against cliff in the ten k at my starting table just as double tap then like got their foes of histories They base we. Were just like there. Were no like super high rollers back. Then there was like the twenty five k. w. wbz championship another that. They didn't even have twenty five days. It was like ten games. The made events All over the place every on every town just like alexi as attend gay. Ac as a ten day like so my role was like seventy two hundred k. Most move that year. But i also like understood bankroll management by that point like i wanna fire all these things thought it was gonna print millions of dollars like that out of back mmediately but it's not exactly how it worked out. By the time. I turned twenty two Backing arrangements look like back then like they just you just show up. Roll up to a stop. They're like here's ten k. Go play oh yeah. It was like they knew how easy all the tournaments work so Allah tug was like okay. Let me see the hand history of hungry by okay. You have a clue like you're making mistakes but you have a clue here's ten k. Here's five day. Here's twenty-five when twenty five day comes around and bellagio started. Having tons of like best. Logger was fifty gay. Almost all of their beta. That's four year fifty days in was playing all had. How much money are these guys carrying around all the tournaments like back in all these kids like data over seventy players award holy shit stable was like forty around that. Wow yeah i mean they would just roll up to stop with three four or five hundred thousand dollars And i like candy. Good luck boys. Go go make some money. It was pretty unreal So that was kind of the genesis by career that started grinding ton of traveling all his might verse like i said i already told part of the story of like when i first started traveling around. I was like buying rarely while getting ridiculous spots and understanding screwed and violated afford in bamber os seven. It was Boxwoods tag gay. Were boettger finals. This was a fun one because three handed play against champs at in cornell santan lloyd both are just kind of like a little bit crazy and blaster showed that their careers and i was just waiting for spots and really like my chances by the way. I'm playing for like three times. My net worth probably more. I'm trying to remember. Like i think they still had no somewhere around seventy five to a hundred gay. And if i got third with makeup factor. Dan i will get paid out fifty if i took second. Get one fifty. And if i gotta i gotta get three hundred seventy five k. Because it was like nine. Ten verse Whatever makeup so three handed. I play a hand where i think it was just i. Oh by annoy open. Five six hearts on the bud so held from the big line changing forwards yards each jax. I think are check back. I might see seabed nicole either way. i turn a flush He raises all end and i snapped. It's appeared board but like this guy's insane he has king nine with no flush draw and the like two thirds of the chips in play. I knock him out. Get a hundred thousand in cash after my backers paid an heads up for w. t. vital. If i hold. And he rivers a boat. And i yelled ya so loud and ritz vim vigor and passion. His sided that they should make it part of the opening. Montage store for years and years to calm never even realized that until i made my second w viki final table. Which wasn't for i. I wanna say like another seven years. Six years final art rock hollywood's And i'm standing backstage getting ready to out with the other final tables and were watching the opening montage and i see my job or you guys. Do i have to relive that right bell. What are you doing man. that's good stuff I played with mike. Mclean in at the matrix like probably ten years or so ago and like again. I don't know very much about tournaments. But i that he's like the face of despair at w. soap e.

"Badge suddenly Things are looking up. I'm school the point i do. I still wasn't. I still wanted to finish. It was just Realistically even my parents said you know if you wanna take some time off from school to pursue this. We understand anything. My dad said that when he didn't know that i was already in a semester off. 'cause i just wasn't home. I wasn't going to fix it is we. Were already fighting over the money out of for my car. So i wasn't gonna bring up the whole baited. Let me back in the semester. Is he wasn't going to believe the story no matter how true. But you gotta take care of the car situation once you. You have all anything bankroll right. The funny thing is the the first thing i did after that certain series was over was drive up to just toss the tank aka road rapper while he's sitting there watching. Tv our walk in the door that enough dory more and got busted with pot galedary was like. Is this legitimate interest. Are you gonna you gonna give it back. If it's not dad. His face. When i said i won't atlantic city blair over was pretty priceless. I mean he was concerned about lake for real money. When i was broke college it was unreal unwise for him to be a little concerned because there was definitely a semester whereas eating alone ramen noodles mac and cheese for the sago having burned through my entire bank roll ally. Take your lumps you know. Learn management and how you learn to Not sucking up later. That you're not ready for absolutely i was gonna say earlier before that. Isn't it amazing. How you mentioned earlier that like you are able to accept the bad and have a good mindset because everything in your life because of poker through poker and that's a very easy thing to like look at it and be like. Oh yeah. that's that's the case you know and even so much as your best friends in life. And i think for me pretty much everything. In life i can attribute to poker in some way shape or form is just woven throughout my family. My friends my professional contact. Just everything pays for my car. My house my way through life for all this time. It's like holy shit like this really came from like a three k bankroll. That i saved up when i was nineteen years old. And that's just pretty insane to me So when you put that all perspective and manage to remember. I mean the real trick is managed to remember to put it in those terms right after you take a baby and to remember that at the moment because it's it's easy to see on a normal day but when you're really just getting your face bashed into the felt it really helps to kind of take a step back charter member all of that for sure and like if i lost everything. Today i would be up so much money over the course career. You know it's like it's just yeah. It's one thing to doing taxes. Every year is always been this interesting exercise that teaches me the value of like big losses. Going through my taxes. And i'm like sweet minus eight k. This day yeah like. Let's get a couple of these in there. So don't on bullet borgata five hundred openers. Like oh this is becoming a nice little tax right. Yeah oh yeah look back on this with fond memories and that's the ironic part about it. Is it always feels so painful in the moment and then when you look back on it with perspective like six months later you don't even remember what the fuck happened that day like. I don't even know what happened. I i had a really bad day. But i have no idea how it happened. Yeah like that's an ugly line on the spreadsheet. I don't know what occurred there. But i felt like shit that day. All right. it's a little easier now at like. I know you have the same thing when you when you go back to your house and see your kids or if you're play online After like what refocuses banned by. I'll be in the middle of a rough sunday session of my. My son will like come running in and hop up on my lap. Start pounding on my keyboard just like none of this matters and plus i mean as poker players. We tend to be a little sometimes. We can be emotionally fragile. And it's like we're playing a card game for a living. We pay our way through life by playing cards. Like how silly are we to be to get all been out of shape over like a month long break even stretch or you know what i mean. It's like two for the all time. First world problem breaking even because i play silly card game for a living. So you move out to vegas. Tell me about that. I'm guessing your dad was pumped batta a couple years later. So i spent my i. I think it was like two years. Yeah oh six to eight. I stayed in the atlantic city area. Just a couple of towns outside a differential properties and the action wasn't that huge atlantic city back. Then like i said we're gonna was still building itself up to become it's become now and it was mostly still just like mid sakes off going on especially with the tournaments. They didn't have that any big terms coming. So if i wanted to play a lot of tournaments side needed of tadeusz But within the first year. After i was laying i also started playing a lot online mostly because i knew that Cliff josephine was backing a lot of people for huge tournaments but that he was gonna wanna see online results and histories mom ladder. So obviously i'd like an online background from college. But i had never played like big. Mdjt's unless i sat related. And i would always try to satellite into the sunday majors of that was playing like lowest mid stakes like the highest jaffa connection with. Is johnny backs right. That was his screening. Yeah i didn't really have a connection with them. The actually when i was in college she was one of the players that That i had been watching. 'cause i knew that he was like shania bodo hari at him where like three of the players who were just like crushing back then stone shania. Shane rose or shane schlaeger. Yeah okay. I get schlaeger in. Rose confused the funny thing. I become pretty good friends with all three of them. Since then and actually like mark boss and dustin dirksen were to the original like online base. That would answer all my annoying westerns. Yeah i was in college. So when i was like nineteen twenty of those two guys get a lot of my credits but So with cliff. I had been like just saying look while why newly like recognize my name from jack and then i started playing all the big tournaments and within a couple of months had one like the wednesday three twenty on stars for like thirty or forty k. End won a couple of hundred dollars revise so.

"Like that was saran earl end. It's not like at that point. It wasn't something where like everyone had a husband or a brother who don in l. like you don't like there were the tv pros. That was it and like so. I came up in an era where i had to like. Explain to people that you can be professional poker player that is option at that. You can have an edge of his day than trying to explain people. The different like explicit religious to explained the difference between table games poker. People like what's crazy man. Is i feel like your your little insulated in your bubble because like i still explain poker to people like even today. I think it's so like it's not. It's way way more mainstream because people just laughed in your face back. Then they're like yeah. Okay yeah the plumbers over exploiting it but at the same time it's like there's there's the level of it where people are just like that's not a thing they're like i've heard of someone being professional guy right. I just always cut it off. Wobble law whatever but like yeah you could just a google goo by hinted mob. I just do with the memphis. Police department store cash on how much. How many thousand. Holy shit you do in memphis driving around with sixty k. Cash on you. A final table the five k. Circuit main event to as i did the we. We're going through tsa. I been advised by someone who works for. Tsa always keep cash on me just like bullet out show to them up to go. Well i still remember his laden said to me. It's one of the funniest sentences that's ever been said to me. She goes Well we were just wonder why you had so much cash on you see us out. They all banks available at such. It's a fair question can be funny about it. Either howard came out. I managed to nachos laugh interface. But yeah they they decided to bring the memphis. Pdf to question may and then after awhile. I- legit. I was like if you google my name. The first results gonna come up as a list of all the logo tournaments that i've cashed in and you'll see that a few days ago i received this money. Aristander it up and was like i have a good day to over like either one poisonous. Not drug money's. He doesn't care like getting close to missing. Flight doesn't become like an hour long ordeal. That's the key then. So right if you ever wanna make drug money you just big tournament and then you funnel the drug money in and you just go to the police right. We got a. We have a plan. Bridging the gap from those couple of years. Before you moved out to vegas playing the ten ten ks and fifteen case what was that. You also mentioned makeup to right. So i'm guessing you had to getting staked because when it was a ten k every couple weeks i I realized pretty quickly that i wasn't going to be able to be my best. Shave us playing. Every prelims. Every satellite burnt out by the by bid But that dragging a bit So i am. This is a month after twenty first birthday when they tell me that. I can't get back into school. I have thirty five hundred left. Because i gave thirty five hundred to the admissions office and didn't get into school anyway. So from there. I start grinding. There was like one hundred one hundred plus twenty plus one hundred dollar on trump with like gay guaranteed prefers no matter how how crappy that a structure for everyone else likes change a reverse fifteen hundred per second eight hundred and i never managed big one final table to buy but that was an infuriated Structure to deal with. Ben ebb laid a month month and a half after i get back down to atlantic city. There's the three hundred forty weekly. Taj tournament was the biggest and a weekly event atlantic city at that point. I final table one week and it's funny. I actually made to my best friends in the world to this day in that single tournament. And how did that come about was one of my Actually one of my on my twenty first birthday laying trump Played one but he was that night as well. And then another guy that i met at the table Became one of my close friends after that By state is placed bunch. When i was down area after moved out of vegas and stuff. We still talk isn't isn't that funny. How people know katie stone capuccio though her husband is one of my best friends Yeah underage play try. You trump on twenty earth dam about that day so all right so table that taj. Three forty Probably like a month. After i get down there after being told get back to school or at least i'm gonna be like three weeks later. Which is not really gonna go. Orange level glasses So i- final table. It and i ended up taking a job even though it was ridiculous soft. I didn't wanna do it. We were like i think. Eight or nine handed and we were still using chip john. It'll backbench to give you an idea of how ridiculous links were in two thousand four or two thousand two thousand six now though. I actually got more than i should have. Because we're using the A job model. And they off seven thousand when i was like eleven or twelve and i take control my bank roll and i just couldn't play with the pressure of knowing that my stack is worth twice what i have left at my role so i chopped it and i came back the following week and finished third for another like thirty five hundred or four gay. And then the wpa circuit came to caesars atlantic city in march abo- six and i played the first three forty and snap busted event. Blade seventy five dollars go to get into the five fifty or whatever. The rate was back then And end up trumping that final table. Five handed with mac lands who was chip leader and thirty four k. In that job because it was a pretty big field than super top heavy payout structures back then so that was like that was kind of the defining moment that was like okay. This is this is actually about to become a career like And i followed that up by winning back seats. In the main event which was a tank for the circuit back then Two hundred dollar re. By and i won both of them so i sold one seat. Nikki franko and old acu legend and play the other one and my roles at like fifty k. after that series so.

"What is supposed to be. A rogue college student stands before them. Louis is unpaid for the previous semester. Leading them to assume probably bro. Said no. I just failed to be communicated with and was more than ready to Era so i made their league. It was really just like two people who watched it just like jaws drop kinda look at me like what the fuck other good. That's the only way i can describe it. It's great it's great. I wanted to say something. I just like. Oh i gambled for this city all winter. That's why they get your letter and it's it's funny. I have a similar story. Not thirty five. Hundred though i when i was twenty one i had no credit. I've been playing poker for six months or so and so had no credit had no like any sort of financial history of anything and decided. The razor came out the cellphone. The singular razor razor had to have the raising right right. So like i go. There signed up and they're like oh it's a five hundred like i see the just the look on their face. I remember it like it's a five hundred dollar deposit. I sorry it's a five hundred dollar deposit. I'm just like okay. Like i just pulled out a gyro of cash you go was like no big deal right like i get back get back in a year okay cool. Let's go and they're just like nobody's ever paid the deposit like yeah. It is nice. It's like yeah. I'm the i remember me so you took your semester off that you're still here double. A senior years have not been completed as of yet. So what the hell happened in that semester. You took off though semester off when pretty well we we go back to atlantic city. Move back into the tropicana borgata poker had really built itself up yet. This was in the infancy of it or This was right around the time they were opening. They opened in hosts six. If amount steak. I could easily do but it was right around that so Tropicana was actually one of the bigger rooms in town and has ended. Did g so i would go over to a dodge for all the tournaments but state at the very lovely tropicana city and i started crying a once two to five but i knew the tournaments were by calling that it was more fun to me i. I held my discipline debt at together. Better where i played cash. It was like as just money. Like i wasn't as worried about making a bad goal as well as when i worked for a stack all day and like bill. The need to protect it chasing this huge first-place prize instead of just trying to win the single pot for two minds or whatever so that all just kind of appeals to be and it also just appealed to me the if you play a tournament you have to battle with if we play cash you can avoid me but i always loved the aspect of like knowing that you're going to have to beat ever after battle with everyone. That was all just my motivation to grind tournaments. Why did that. Why is that so meaningful to you that very you can't avoid we gotta go. Because i'm very competitive. I don't like a i. I like to be pressured into like really battling and having to try to win all the chips and the competitive side of me isn't as satisfied when i win a buy-in cash aim. Whatever the most you can realistically win as it never appealed to me quite as much as you know chasing huge first place prize. Listen feeling like you have to go out with everybody and really dislike ready to battle with like the end bosses in sickos. Because like by the time i guess i don't want to jump too far have story but like other temples. Twenty two hours playing like the balaj fifteen gays and like just playing against all the people that i was watching on. Tv ad cycads not be intimidated and learn how to battle with them and not scared. And that was a lot of fun for bay of where. I kind of a lot of my jobs. So how did it feel When you came up on the short end of the stick in these battles that are for relatively high stakes not just the price bull but also like opportunity you spend all day play this tournament nurturing the stack battling battling battling and then something goes horribly wrong that ever gets you down or was it just motivation to do your best to improve. That was i definitely would have For the stability of cash and having much smaller swings but but it's still was just so so much more motive bathing in tournament play like even those spots are obviously demoralizing. you just have to have the right mindset and understand it as a big picture thing in know how much your hourly still is despite this bad for whatever equity It it was something that had definitely took a little while to fully right my head around and embrace especially when you know. It's one thing to to get used to it. The atlantic city dailies. But when you start traveling tour and it starts happening ten case. I remember one stretch when i was twenty two before i made my first. Wkbd fumble table goes twenty three. I eighteen miles able add. There were just multiple spots. Where i got it all in pre with aces for like six eight. Fifteen by or starting. Stacks in ten ks and scott torture over and over and over and over and that was really demoralizing. I do remember after like the third one that that had happened within. Like a six months span. I i remember just like staring out the window of a play like one bearing fighter really handle it and you know just knowing that there's still that like however small the chance is that you're going to take to take these beats no matter our while you're playing there. Is that realistic chance that it's going to happen again. You're going to put it all with aces lloyd. Getting close to the money for like chip leader close. And you're gonna lose. That was definitely something that took a while to Really except but obviously like making my first final table at twenty three and having like a million dollars or was the motivation. I needed to keep going That was that was out of the funk. That's what they had a big up dot back all the money from the the aces hands. Might all that stuff. Just it all felt okay. Agana like after that point. It was much easier for me to accept like the horrendous beads especially the roughest always just felt like when you travel somewhere for one tournament just main event and you get there and you play well run up stack like take a baby like you just kind to spend the whole flight whole just burnt or could have been thinking about what you could be doing differently and all that kind of stuff but overall it within a couple of years of really starting my professional career twenty one i had a good mindset about it and what that comes from.

"I i. It was absolutely demoralized thing. It's like that was the moment. I thankful management. I i- lumbered away from my computer. Defeated like the first two were like. We're like standard hands. And then i just like tilted authored by and then realize that i had just dusted off half my worth and it was like seven o'clock seven thirty at night and i just went straight to bed. Played no face. I in bed. It did get up for like twelve or thirteen now and i went to the college in new jersey so we were like an hour and a half atlantic city. I went day see a few times but the kind of paranoid os blamed. A is actually one of the only times that i was like gambling. I did really played tabled aims. After i turned twenty one but had been playing black jackets taj mahal day got like deaths thereby pit boss when i was i was just like are like other managed to hold off to love story won so while getting a underage because i was nineteen was clearly underage. Like stared down the gabriel. The look like i know you're under age like lisa pre as opposed to you know. Let's get the law involved kind of way to go out so who. I just rented a lot online today. Every game i could find her by college which were softer than the all find aims but everything was just beautiful background. Made maybe mouth to you know pay for everything and i had a four and built up a few thousand dollar role and than i turned to what we won. I was doing a double major in psychology. So i had to senior years because i had to do so many four hundred level classes and i turned twenty one in the middle of the first senior year. My business senior year and was back and forth through atlantic city the entire finals week because my during finals week i remember studying from the table. Branding one two in the nightly yards and so Dan i still did well. My finals gotta learn got to ac and do several ban for the entire winter break aside from like christmas day. Only i went home to hang out with family at that was straight back to. Ac spent six weeks down there And why was it so exciting to play poker. Why why why were you sucked in so hard to the poker world online. That wasn't quite a appealing. I loved it. But i was still able to keep it together. And you know. Get enough of mike laszlo still Glasses as i was tired the morning after playing all night. So but i it. Was you know the bright lights the casinos going out to restaurants every night like i grew up late not super poor but like we certainly weren't just going to be able to like stay in hotels and restaurants all the time and i. It was the first time. I kind of live that lifestyle and so there was data lower and does the fact that i felt like i had such an edge and it was like and he's penalties away from the tables. I feel like i was just his passing on opportunity. Battle the play a game. I love and get better out of money. So i got back to school and i ended up Spent muslim winning. Actually got to atlantic city with like five hundred thousand bucks star winter break and had seven thousand by the end of a brady went back to school for my second semester of the business injury air and was informed that they were missing signature on one of my student loan paper words and as a result they had gotten aid for the previous semester and they registered me from all my classes and they sent to letter to my house where i wasn't informed me of this. They didn't bother calling my cell or anything like mysel- was on fire with school. Any call about this. I would have made sure it was garrett right away because as much as i love the game and realize the opportunity. I was very serious about school at wanted. Finish i get back to school. And i go to the Bread how did that happen. Like what's the protocol if they don't get paid a fifty percent or fifty one percent or something if they don't get at least ish of the previous semester they they won't let you enroll with ali's master but i mean it's pretty shitty to send letter to my parents house while i'm at the north tower of tropicana. Yeah you'd think they'd have more motivation to get paid at least you know. Call the person that can make this happen. Yeah i mean. I would have taken very seriously out of left. Atlantic city gonna have live. I had to like. I was not gonna let as So to the point that. I showed the registrar's office. Or whatever the hell you all it and naturally i Was a twenty one year old poker player and had my entire bankroll in my pocket. Gonna put in the bag. Just had to be ready to gamble. At all times. I walk in there. Were seven grand my pocket and they tell me they had got paves the previous master but i live off campus. I had a partial scholarship a state school and basically had to pay thirty five hundred bucks to get the fifty were fifty or fifty one percent paid for the Nestor the look on their faces. When i pulled it. Aided in cash is something. I'll never forget so. I hand over the cash immediately. Art my glasses after meet with the school of business. I set up a meeting with the dean. He no-shows and i wait a half hour in his office. While he doesn't show up. I give up go back to my door and register. We don't have wi fi back then. Everything's wired connection so it's not like like walk around campus won't still environments so i go put it in session. I go back the next morning. And they're like he's a he's on vacation for j. weeks like a cool so he's the only guy who can sign me back in my classes. He no showed me that went on vacation and is an answering. My emails paul's knock. I decided to take semester off. And i am currently still on thirty five hundred back now. I owed it to them for the previous house. A previous one up just figuring that out. Like when i paid my car with my dad We worked at the food he Needless to say it was a pretty infuriating experience all around. But tell me about the moment you'd like pull out your role from your pocket and handover out the hundreds. Just look on the desk. There's like astounded that. I just happen handles amount.

Great poker player who lives to serve his fellow man. The great matt down mr style. Welcome to jc booker greatness. Podcasts their woods. It's my pleasure and we've been having a pre conversation. We've got a lot of things to get to over the course of this conversation. Typically though with this podcast specifically we start by talking about your journey through the world of cards so to begin how state your age and tell me about how you got into the world of cards and all the fun life lessons and stories. You've accumulated on the way. I got a lot of times. I got all the time all right. So the the kind of cool way to put it. As that i started playing poker. I was four years old. Because that's what my sister talk about. Five car draw but it's less relevant than during the money made boom when i was in college So around two thousand four is when i just like really started going headfirst into poker. Let's wanna because this morning. I was thinking a lot about how there was one specific. Aol instant message that. I can trace my entire career path. Back to my buddy nick. Luiz sent me a message. He's like jodi cards a like. Yeah he's like you wanna come over. Twenty five fifty cent hold on those like the What the hell did you say. It was late. Chinese and i was like any use like poker and i was like. I'll see you there so that night. We played for like eggs hours. And i remember specifically that. I made four dollars and twenty five cents. When to wendy's the only place spillover was eating a bunch of stuff. The dollar is the greatest ever so college just became my breeding ground for grinding poker stars And bowl tail end. That was just kind of kind of how things went from then on. I remember that i got fired. My campus bookstore job. Because a few months after i learned how to play i was playing a five dollar re by with a huge field realize that it was gonna take all night and i ended up winning liquor brand and to my job on literally no sleep because i started at nine and it was like eight. Am by the time. I was finished with the. I got through the first half of my work day fi and went home for lunch and just completely passed out a woke up like three hours later. The word of their like. You're fired it's it's tough but it's fair honestly. My first thought was well. That's fine is now kind of have a role in a time to grind I obviously i had no clue bank all well. Of course you're you're in college. Tell me about the what the steps that you took in the beginning to learn about poker immersing yourself. Did you gravitate towards books. Are you kinesthetic learner. Did you learn by playing. Would that look like it was a combination of books in laying. There weren't training videos back then. But there weren't equity calculate was around. We were in the beginning stages of people actually like writing decent books real strategy. Like there was super system harrington on holdem. Those were the ones that i started By reading but i also. I just saw that. I mean allows. People don't even understand who didn't play back then but like no one had a clue what was going on but good players were just like the players who had some kind of strategy. And we're even trying like you could of multi table and watched ebay an roi darva like no problem. If you had any idea what you're doing and it was. I mean the getting was so after. I quit my job. It was just studying a little bit. We sees the air quotes for quit. Quit your job. Oh sorry fired for my everybody not quit. I was ever fired from a job. Quit in my heart of hearts like my body. Did what my court Design if you go to sleep right now not only. Do you get to nap. But you get to play a lot poker dome for it. So i actually kind of build up late I got my role up till like seven. Hey while still nineteen at a junior college and then doesn't have it off in a single session playing five ten days that was. That was how i call. Bank will work to thought like you. Just buy for one gay of five onto tables upside while you have a role of seven day and that's fire life work. You lose in the three point five.

"It's weird but it's the only way to describe it. It's like okay. I am playing in a poker tournament. That maybe i shouldn't be right but trying to do some of these personal goals in the poker side and at the same time everything worked so hard on for the last couple years of the brand is like right in front of me and it's just weird but it's an awesome it now that i i just i don't have you know people would laugh at me. Like are those x ray glasses or like you know can you. Can you read the. It's like now like you know. I've got a lot more to lose if i were to try anything like that. Yeah he's gonna cheat using his own card brand at a major event that uses his cards in sponsorship. That that that would make a lot of sense ruin my entire like you know personal brand in the industry and your name your reputation just kind of every everything all at once like if you ever went out of the poker world. That's the path. I think that's the route you wanna take. Because you'll for sure be out so blind these tournaments. I know we talked in the last conversation about faded spayed. And you transitioning to running the charity events had matt stout on the podcast yesterday or the last episode actually for the podcast listener. This one's going to get expedited so it'll be a few weeks before stout gets released. You're jumping the line here tom. That's how you roll. but he. He started the charity series of poker and ran some tournaments on faded spayed. The poker client as well. So how's that project going still doing doing. Its thing doubt Actually when i was getting back into tournaments stat was someone that gave me just like really casual tournament. Coaching when it was like. Oh hey like here's a spot right and So stoute's stout like i was getting back into it was definitely helpful there So sorry. I bumped you stout happens. So anyway Things are going good on the virtual booker space right like there isn't as much demand as there. There was in the height of the pandemic but breathe. We're still kicking it And like to date. We've done over five million dollars in fundraising for probably over. Eighty different.

"And even the unfiltered pictures. of course. she's putting up the best ones. But let's be honest you you look at your pictures. This is a pretty girl. Okay the looks like a very pretty girl and you look at matt stout and well. Let's just say that. He of scored out of his league. Here it looks like good for him. It's good for him but he got hot wife. But i don't know if the poker world resents him for this or if there's they don't like him there certain people that has hate maths doubt. I don't get it. Because i have no problem with the guy. He seems. Alright to me. Like i really have no issue with the do so i don't know why hatred for him i haven't seen any evidence that he scammed anyone. I haven't seen anything bad that he's done. I don't find him particularly obnoxious. on twitter's i don't really get why they have issues with him but there's some people that is really hate the guy and there's like multiple people who really seemed to like to bash him and i still don't get it. I haven't seen that much directed at his wife but occasionally does spill over to her because she's kind of public active on twitter and is active on twitter as his wife. She is a dealer at some vegas card room. Maybe bally's or i'm not exactly sure which one but she a dealer at a vegas card room. I don't know if that's how she met him but she still is a dealer now. Matt's doubt is known to be a successful poker pro and you never know. Sometimes someone's known to be as successful poker pro and they actually have chunked off most of the money or aren't winning. His meshes looks like but she still has his dealer job..
