"Compliance plans. Now we turn to TV and streaming. We are joined by TV guides Matt Roush, who has some new offerings to tell us about. Good morning, man. Good morning. Ah, lot of people have been looking forward to the return of the crown, and now it's back. I think this is the season that everyone who's really loved this deluxe series about the life of Queen Elizabeth has been waiting for this is the big one. This is the one where we meet Princess Diana, the young bride of Prince Charles in a marriage that this serious shows us was pretty much doomed from the start because he could never get over. Not being allowed to marry Camilla. And of course, we all know how this all ends. But it doesn't make it any easier to watch this young girl played by a newcomer Emma Corrine. Uh, isolated and trapped within the palace feeling she has no support from anybody, even though that her popularity eclipses all the others, which makes them resent her even more. It just has such high drama. They also depict her bulimia. Quite graphically, you just get a sense of how unhappy she was in that world. But the other side of this season is the introduction of Margaret Thatcher played by the X Files, Gillian Anderson and I'll tell you This has got to be a front runner for the M E next year. She is incredible as stature. You might not even remember that Meryl Streep ever played her the way that Gillian Anderson plays her and the scenes between her and the Queen sort of discussing the fate of Britain because her sort of draconian rule clashed with the Queen's more empathetic feeling about the country that those audiences they're just such high drama, so it's a really great season of the crown. It's available as of today, and I've seen a little bit of Gillian Anderson's Maggie Thatcher and she is so great at it. She is just so on. It's really something I mean, she just is like her voice has been starched by something I don't know. It's just crazy, but she's wonderful. And you really believe she's her. It is terrific stuff. Okay, next only about 20 seconds left man, but you tell us that the show is signing off. Yes. After 15 years, supernatural says goodbye on the CW. This is a show that has existed all the way to the to the WB, where it started two brothers who've been fighting demons for 15 years. The longest running harder show ever retrospective hour begins on Thursday, then the final episode on Thursday. It's the end of the road Road for the Winchester Brothers. But Jared Paddle like you'll be back as Walker, Texas Ranger in January on the CW. Okay, man. Thank you very much. You bet TV guides Matt Roush ahead in Sports Washington Facing the Lions this afternoon, 11 14 have cold launched the capital Grid project to build a stronger, more reliable and resilient energy grid project provides safe and reliable energy in a modernized system that can better withstand unforeseen events. Emmy Awards 2020: Stars prepare to dial in for virtual ceremony
"It is time for the Emmy Awards They'll be airing tonight on ABC. Earlier, I talked with TV guides Matt Roush about how Cove it will affect this year's ceremony. Like everything else is going to be so weird and remote as most things are. Nowadays, you can't gather a big crowd like that. There's no red carpet. The nominees will be home or somewhere like that. And so they sent cameras about 100 locations in multiple countries. And wherever the nominees are whoever is gonna win. They're goingto win at home or somewhere, and they're not all going to be in the Big theatre. They're probably going to be dressed in their jammies or something, or some people might be Glammed up, we'll find out, but it's just gonna be so strange. Hopefully, Jimmy Kimmel still find some humor in all of this, but it's going to be just a very different Emmy than you've ever seen

"Of Matt Roush of TV insider and you go to his website to and find a lot more get those by the way they send a lot of email alerts for you which is nice Matt good morning how are you good thanks how you doing well thanks to you I'm doing pretty well I I so I went and watched two of your recommendations Hollywood watch the entire Netflix series and then also now we've got polluted my wife daughter and I were all glued into never have I ever and we went through quite a few episodes of the Ladoga flaws coming out of that one so now I'm looking forward to this week and what you're gonna recommend there's plenty there still is plenty thankfully you know at some point it's going to get a little slow but we sell quite a bit going on in and the emphasis I think these days of like with never have I ever which is a really clever young adult romantic comedy the people are looking for feel good TV in essence night you'll see a couple on food network which is the destination for a lot of people but they're doing a couple new new series starting tonight including Amy Schumer learns to cook Amy Schumer being one of the following your people on the planet and and she does a lot of great stand up and stuff and she's been in some hit movies but as she is that so many other people are she's self isolating with her family and her husband just happens to be a professional cook so he's teaching her how to make it through the kitchen in the first episode I think she learns how to poach an egg another breakfast things and also how to repair some real favorite late night snacks but she's a very funny person so I imagine that this this tutorial will be quite funny as well and also tonight Martha Stewart's gonna provide over something called bake away camp which is gonna be look taking like a boot camp attitude toward a baking competition where bakers will be working sometimes outside I guess no be doing their spin on things like s'mores but Martha Stewart will be letting us know what is and is not a good thing so those are happening tonight but also tonight there's going to be a special episode of the price is right which did pretty well in the holidays with prime time episodes in this enduring daytime game show was doing another primetime addition obviously taped earlier before there were no audiences anywhere but RuPaul the Emmy winning host of RuPaul's drag race is going to be the the celebrity contestant here playing for charity while contestants are looking you know when things like a brand new car and all those other kind of things you do on price is right I love the idea of RuPaul doing playing go so we'll see how that goes tonight on the price is right on the B. as in prime time so the regular shows up all out you'll see more ways of putting shows that you've heard about an otherwise trying to fill the gap in prime time to give stuff to watch in in the evening Matt what about companies this way you mensural Paul get in some last doing plank of in a picture in my mind for that so what else do we have in comedy well the tomorrow night's a good night for comedy fans if you're a Netflix subscriber there's going to be a new episode of unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt which is the image of what nominated comedy from Tina fey that in its run last year but the billing one special episode called Kimi verses the Reverend were Kimmy Schmidt the indomitable heroine faces off against the evil Reverend played by Jon Hamm who's very handy in this but the twist here is that it's an interactive episodes so as the story goes on you'll be able to flick your remote and tell them which way you want to store to go whether you wanted to go this way or that way or the other wacky characters and university you get to play along with the show and that that's just great but over on ABC tomorrow night for people who have nostalgia for the comedy that we all grew up with there's a two hour tribute called the Happy Days of Gerry Marshall Gary Marshall of the of the legendary producer and director who created Happy Days and laverne and Shirley and Mork and Mindy and stars like Henry Winkler and Ron Howard and Cindy Williams will be there to remember him but anyone under direct big hit movies like pretty woman in princess diaries runaway bride and if you're gonna have Julia Roberts and Richard Gere another movie stars also talking about him here's a guy Gerry Marshall the guy who lived to make people laugh to entertain people we miss instilled but this two hour special will probably be a nice thing to watch on ABC for people who remember the glory days the Happy Days of the nineteen seventies which were wonderful Happy Days the nineteen fifties so missed out to live on a graduation day this year doesn't exist for a lot of people so we're looking at the what might happen I was reading about does the president get in the former president getting involved in a special graduation day on TV yes on Saturday night all the networks all the major broadcast networks are quite a few cable networks and maybe even some news channels will be by broadcasting a special event called graduate together America honors the high school class of twenty twenty Brock Obama we doing the commencement address but also be entertainers and inspirational figures people like lebron James and the Jonas brothers Megan Rapinoe from the US soccer team I'm for L. Williams the Malala the activist and there'll be others so if you're missing pomp and circumstance at your local venue at your local local schools the release of something on TV I know there's going to there's also a lot of ritual things going on on line where this is concerned but this is one that sort of all America can watch and celebrate a class that had a senior year like no other so wide at the graduate together is one of those things the TV is going to bring us all together what about ten alleys speaking of graduation what's called what shows are graduating well there's a lot of shows going off the air these days some for good some not just for the season but survivor is as usual has a big epic Senate finish they're going to bring somebody back in from the edge of extinction to join the last couple of players and they will they will crown a winner when the biggest prize ever two million dollars because this was an all star season that's going to happen Wednesday with the reunion show right afterward but you're also going to see how to get away with murder the long running ABC wacko crime drama go off the air on Thursday and it's gonna be a very final episode American idol will crown a winner on Sunday this coming Sunday they've been doing everything by remote so will be a familiar like you've never seen before so all that's happening but you also make a note about survivor that because they were not able to film a new season with that normally be doing it right now because of the shutdown they delayed the amazing race which was going to come on right after the survivor finale amazing race they have a whole season of the camp but even a put that off until fall they give us something to look forward to in the fall but some people were expecting to see it now well people are to blame for gratification because then they'll come fall there's gonna be a lot less TV unless our production can get up and running anytime soon Hey Matt final thirty seconds before let's go back to work there but a lot of nice to testimonials and tributes conifer Jerry Stiller yes wonderful wonderful comic actor the king of queens was always likely career thing for him but of course he and his wife and merry who's all who passed away years as few years ago we're just such a great comedy team we also gave its been stellar so there's going to be grateful for about the career of Jerry Stiller so they'll go again be very much missed but he was wonderful guy in all that all this is the ever popped up in a man have a great week thanks for all the tips all talk to you a week from now you bet thank you then follow Matt on Twitter at T. V. GM Matt rouse go to a website TV insider as well good morning WCCO time is three minutes for a Dave Lee here in the morning news coming up in the next half hour we'll talk with chills flushing Jr CBS senior business analyst tell your smart speaker to play new stock eight threo WCCO all right it's Jamie progresses employee of the month to month in a row leave a message at the hi Jamie hit me Jamie I just had a new idea for our song what the name your price tool so when it's like tell us what you want to pay trombone was Bob wine you say well be fine coverage options to fit your budget then we just all the fingers now small choir goes even coming after they've come at jet yes no maybe anyway so your practice tonight I got a new there so.

"Safe my friends you ten for your entertainment buzz TV guide magazine's Matt Roush is joining us and this is a show you may have been done but it was a long time ago in you know today's today's times it's dead to me on Netflix back for season two Matt yes so that you know every week it's like there's gonna be something new to stream into binge on so with your Netflix and I'm also course telling people that if you haven't watched or finished watching upload on Amazon that was my new favorite from last week but this week we have second season of dead to me which is the sort of dark screwball comedy that starred Christina Applegate who got an Emmy nomination for it and on the card Leni as these two women who needed a grief counseling but there but there's lots of weird twists and dark secrets along them and it kind of spirals into a murderous farce and at the end of the first season there was a body in the backyard pool of Christina Applegate and now the second season a lot of it has to do with what we do with this body and and the complications that come from that and all of that so if you're not familiar with the series that I want to go into further detail because that really is predicated on big jaw dropping twists but Christina Applegate is particularly good at the Snapfish woman a single mom now who with as it were who doesn't hate adversity very well when the Carlini is very open hearted and warm and trying to get her through this crisis said and they're both quite funny together so it is one of Netflix's better comedy series and it's back for a second season on Friday and if that wasn't enough for you to binge on Netflix has another show called the Eddie yes and this one is more like an HBO prestige project I mean so in other some different tones Netflix shows some very serious summer very light summer who knows what they are but the Eddie comes from Damien Chazelle who won an Oscar for directing la la land and the sudden appearance jazz club so there's a big jazz soundtrack we don't like jazz you may have a little tough time warming up to this one but it said in the club in Paris and there's criminal elements who were trying to take over aspects of the club but there's other intrigues going on but it kind of made me a lot of HBO's for may which was so that in so it's a reflective of New Orleans and its music and its culture and here we have Paris and one of the storylines the guy who runs the club is an American pianist and his daughter his estranged daughter comes to stay with him for a while there's a lot of family conflict and all of that but it's really it's more about just being there and then immersing yourself in the the fortunes of the struggling club and listen to the music which if you like jazz it's pretty special so again Netflix shows to be pretty distinctive in the ID definitely qualifies if you're looking for a laugh go to dead to me that is Matt rows of TV guide magazine joining us here on KMOX.

"Well for our weekly TV fix we welcome TV guides Matt Roush good morning Matt good morning so Star Wars day is tomorrow what's new about that well yeah I was made a fourth of the may the fourth be with you so that is Star Wars they have been for years what making it special this year is that it is now also the time of Disney plus which has the exclusive streaming streaming rights to many of the Star Wars films as well as marble and and Pixar and all those things so it is one of the most successful streaming launches that we've had since this became a thing but admitted the specially a big day for them with Star Wars being part of their brand within a brand and they know how to exploit this brand because they're moving forward by several months the streaming premiere of the winter hit movie Star Wars the rise of sky Walker which brought the whole sky Walker saga together and it was you know big massive box office hit but now it's gonna be streaming as of Monday as a treat to Star Wars fans but they've got other Star Wars programming in the pipeline as well that begins tomorrow and that includes a series called Disney gallery the Mandalorian which is a deep dive going behind the scenes about all the different aspects of the Mandalorian series which was the show the launch to the Disney plus no this is dreaming service couple months ago about the mythology of the show the effects of the show and just tell me to Lauren came to be and they're also going to premiere the final episode of the hit animated spin off Star Wars the clone wars so in his heyday to completely nerd out on Star Wars tomorrow if you are as Disney plus subscriber which many Star Wars fans probably already are but they've had a really interesting strategy on Disney plus to premiere the the box office things including some other animated shows movies I like frozen two months ahead of schedule dispatcher during this time we were all stuck inside and so this is part of that strategy as well the only Star Wars fans can really get their fax kitten I like what you say is going to be happening on Sunday nights yes as of tonight that sort of I and I've sort of almost a retro sort of a way but it used to be a big deal in theatrical movies especially big blockbusters would show up on network television in in sort of a Sunday night at the movies format well CBS is reviving that format if you didn't see any promos for the promos actually look like something you would have seen in the seventies or eighties but the idea here is that CBS has run out of there hit scripted shows on Sunday night the NCIS dramas all had to shut down production early so they were left with a bit of a hole in because that CBS is aligned with the paramount studios they decided to raid the faults of for some of the hottest titles from the last three decades and so for the month of may anyway we're going to have something on the movies beginning tonight with raiders of the Lost Ark and in weeks to come Forrest Gump the regional mission impossible Tom Cruise Titanic which almost be a mini series and the Indiana Jones the last crusade so these are big titles whether people will come together to watch movies that I'm sure they've seen before we may actually own them in our libraries in the courses are gonna have commercial than them but it certainly was a thing when that when when when movies came to television and once upon a time of the week and watch movies after they left the earth was on TV so we'll see whether this tradition to revive itself again yeah I remember my dad used to say let's break out the popcorn and Sunday night well you know a lot of us are having movie nights anyway when we either whether you're at the pay per view are going to grow DVD balls or what have you so that is one way for the we're getting through this and yes popcorn is big that is these are these are big popcorn movies as well and finally a legal drama that we're seeing thanks to zoom yes this is really interesting tomorrow night the freshman legal drama on CBS called all rise they scripted a special episode in response to what's been happening with social distancing and are gonna do a whole courtroom drama episode where the judge the star of the show she is presiding over a virtual bench trial so the prosecution and and and the defense lawyer and that the defendant everybody's gonna be coming in through zoom and other web based technologies but the whole episode was was scripted and it was filmed in a way much like we're seeing things like American idol and other shows and late night TV all play out where everybody's coming in from different angles because nobody's nobody's congregated together anymore so we'll see how that plays an actual scripted drama that airs tomorrow night the same day the court TV is going to be broadcasting live audio of Supreme Court hearings for the first time because they're going remote as well and that's our New World thank you very much ma'am you bet he guides Matt rouse it's eleven fifteen sports at fifteen forty five powered by Red River technology decisions aren't black and white thank rad J. Brooks although it appeared quarterback Andy Dalton's days in Cincinnati were numbered after the Bengals chose LSU's Joe burrow with the number one overall pick in the NFL draft last weekend the red rifle was still the Bengal through this past Thursday before he was released with rumors of Dalton heading to either New England Jacksonville or even Denver but Saturday don't return to the state where he grew up and attended college as the Dallas Cowboys signed on to a one year deal to back up dak Prescott whose franchise tag just a couple of weeks ago back to Cincinnati the Bengals also not picking up the fifth year option on wide receiver John Ross the ninth overall pick of the twenty seventeen draft who's only played twenty four forty eight possible games over the first three years in the NFL due to injury Cincinnati drafting former Clemson wideout T. Higgins in the second round of last weekend's draft meanwhile you go back to the challenge in life and I got this great big challenge in front of me and and I'm just I don't see how I could turn my back on it if you still haven't caught the project eleven story on ESPN which bothers skins quarterback Alex Smith threw his injury and recovery you can't tonight at eleven o'clock airing right after the last dance the documentary of Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls J..

"Is busy again with Matt Roush Matt good morning good morning in about an hour Sheila E. is gonna join us and she's gonna talk about prince and the reason is is but not all that you know prince obviously been here Minnesota prince of course is still huge but then there's gonna be a very special TV salute to prince yes outside for like Tuesday night on CBS of the last two years when when they finish the Grammys they have all that talent collected in Los Angeles so they tend to put together some kind of a big concert several days later that's what happened this year and they did it as a big salute to prince the show's going to be called let's go crazy a Grammy salute to prince and it is hard to believe but it's that tomorrow will be four years to the day that prince passed away in such an untimely fashion and with such shocking incident but but his with his music certainly lives on and so this specials going to be it kind of takes us back to the days I'm just a few months ago when you could still do concerts as opposed to the use of special like we're seeing the one that was on Saturday night world these international musicians come together but they're not coming together they're doing all their music from their home and so you know it it doesn't feel like a real concert it'll almost be like a throwback to watch that on Tuesday night the host is Maya Rudolph was wonderful good entertainer I did not realize that she performs with a prince cover band they call princess so that should be fun to watch is going to perform with them but as you said she really is going to perform Morris day and the time big tell a lie group when fire John legend foo fighters I sure you know what it will feel like nineteen ninety nine again I think of it in the last for for for for people who are still prince fans and that's probably just about everybody that should be a pretty big deal on CBS again just to see fresh concert special will be something new because of the way that music and everything else has changed in the last period of time since the virus kicked in so it'll be an interesting sort of thing now what are they gonna do on American idol that is a good question I I'm still not really sure how it's going to look but then they tried to put it off for several weeks that the see how things are gonna play out in terms of starting their live shows the last two weeks they've they've done specials on Sunday night which give deeper background to the performers and the and the contestants were going to be in the top twenty and and so on Sunday this coming Sunday we're going to see them go into the the next phase of the competition but they can't do it like the ever always did it which would bring all the top twenty together and and put you know band behind them and be on the stage and have a lot of young fans of screaming for their favorites that's not gonna happen the judges are going to be all in their homes either Los Angeles or Nashville or what have it in the performers of the contestants will each be doing their song from their individual homes all over the country and the magical be like more acoustic than before but they may have some kind of background music piped in I'm just not sure how it's gonna play out but the judge will be doing their thing the things will be doing their thing and America will be doing their thing they'll be voting for their favorites just like they always have this is the show's gonna look really different but that part of competition kicks in Sunday and the voice other competition on NBC the other singing competition they're still filming they're they're still running their tape shows right now but there's just a few weeks away from having to pull the trigger as well so we'll see how each of the shows look as they head toward trying to name a champion god is speaking to CVS which did a minute ago honest about god friended me you know the there's quite a bit of news last week about the last few days about that CBS announced last week that the they're going to end the run of this series after just two seasons about the for now is going to be this coming Sunday with a two hour finale I'm god friended me was a very upbeat showed what they're after sixty minutes about a young guy who said he didn't believe in god we kept getting these Facebook posts from a god account the mystery of god account it was sending him out on you know missions of mercy and and I think that CBS wanted to have the like the next touched by an angel with this show in that show in three years with the big yet god forgive me was not a not a flop but it didn't do what they thought it would do in coming in between sixty minutes which is ensuring that and it's been the same sort of thing which by NCIS spin off which are also really big shows it just didn't pull the audience I guess the CBS hope so it's only going to err for these is this one more time in and be gone after two seasons I've gotten quite a bit of mail about it the people are I'm happy to show this B. at a time like we're living through isn't getting a longer leash and so but that happens a TV especially network TV quite often but if you do like autonomy you won't want to miss that he step aside because they say they're gonna reveal some answers about the god account but the show will not be continuing after Sunday how series finales this week map yes there's a lot of good byes to be said this week including two will and grace which course had a legendary run in the nineties early two thousands out for forever first for a quite a few seasons and then came back a few years ago and it's going to be gone after three seasons over eleven seasons and all for will and grace after a decade break in between and it was a groundbreaking show for its time the way that it had centralize these very funny gay characters who've never been really center stage on a show like that they've been such a big hit on network TV but really just a sparkling ensemble it's really a classic comedy the final episode is called it's time and I think it is time for the show to like take a bow this last season got bogged down in pregnancy storylines little think we're quite as funny as I thought it would be in the last will and grace had at the moment the air the episode and will be followed by a retrospective of some of the greatest moments I know this show is known for its guest stars all through the run of the show as well so that should be a fun show to watch but when grace be over as of Thursday on a more serious note show time on Sunday closes the book on homeland a political thriller that I was quite an Emmy favorite in its early years it may have seemed a little bit too long as well but it really got its mo Jo back if not its reputation back in these last couple of seasons both last season's been taking place in Afghanistan and Pakistan and really hot zones war zones and Carrie Mathison the the C. I. A. analyst who's a bit crazy yourself I really am hot water right now and how she's going to pull down the final episode or the episode will go dark we really don't know but it's going to be a pretty gripping episode sick about a homeland on Sunday and I thought you should know that tonight AMC has the season finale of better call Saul the breaking bad spinoff it's been amazing this season and this episode will be the last episode of this season with one more season to go but better call Saul on AMC really add to the C. television you know I was watching the Mrs might Maisel on Amazon prime or the weekend Matt and sterling K. brown United chat about him from this is us we have on there and I don't know if that's really him who was singing there but man oh man the the guy's got some talent I believe it is yeah he he even while he was a guest star in this last season of Mrs Maisel which of course if you're looking for really great fun television of course there's a lot of that out there too but you never know when it's time to catch up or or or watch a show on streaming that you just heard about and you can't go wrong with Mrs Maisel yeah Kevin Pollak Manny is a so much talent on that so I gotta say that Mrs Maisel just of the delightful series and it's a bit of a period piece but you're watching this woman who company is sort of the story of Joan rivers only not quite a bit she's very groundbreaking female comic in the early sixties early fifties or whatever it is but it's it's it's just a wonderful wonderful piece yeah it's great Hey I'm a match I'll let you go if I want to get to those newsletters or want to stay in touch how do I do that you know that you can find a border.

"It is time for your entertainment buzz TV guide's Matt Roush joining us and I have a question for you because this sounds like I should watch it I haven't been completely convinced by the trailer so tell me what I should know about is always extraordinary play list well it was extraordinary play that's what you should know is that it is not ordinary and that's why I'm coming into it because so much of network television a particular place by formula and here they're just taking a big swing in and it's a very different kind of a show and I really like it it's like a little bit glee a little bit about what might be all it's kind of crazy at the fantasy musical comedy it's not like anything else on TV and it is enjoyable it's it's it's never settle let's put it that way but it is it is a good deal of fun what happens here is that we have a young like the internet colder working in in San Francisco she was a little insecure but she's an ambitious young career girl but she goes in for an MRI she there's an earthquake she gets all this music download into her brain and all of a sudden people on the street people work people at home they just are breaking out into song music big big musical production number sometimes and she like what's going on here but she realizes that they're sort of exposing their sold her this way reminds me of my favorite Buffy the vampire slayer episode called once more with feeling where everybody will we were forced to sing their feelings and he may hear she's the only one who see that happen like all of a sudden there's a flash mob in the street and everybody in San Francisco with dancing to the Beatles help nothing like that how they are for that number one but number two it's like it's kind of cool it's also kind of weird so I don't know what's going to catch on an NBC but it begins on Sunday they're running the pilot which the air the pilot a couple weeks ago with a sneak peek at the going to repeat the pilot and then the first new episode and then we'll see whether catches on on Sunday nights but I hope it does because the we is truly different and the different sometimes on TV is exactly what we need well I've often thought life would be a lot more fun if it were a musical ends of the lead actors is adorable I was trying to remember where I'd seen her but she was in that I think it was a Netflix show with Renee Zellweger yeah she was in what if she was the star of Suburgatory for several years on A. B. C. Jane levy she's a I think a real rising talent and she's really good and that's on and learn to relearn Graham from Gilmore girls place your boss and there's lots of good people Skyler Astin than that so it's just a really took a big TV show I I hope it works for NBC because that'll take many swings that they don't if this one doesn't work then we'll be back to you know law and order SVU part two you know that is is always extraordinary play list and Matt Roush of TV guide magazine joining us here on KMOX now.

"The Oscar is with us to talk about it is TV guide magazine's Matt Roush so mad there's no host again this year no there isn't the yet again thing certain amount of lack of showmanship to sort certain extent but last year when they went without a host which was sort of a a desperation move because Kevin Hart have you had been injured some controversy after he was named and so they decided to go with nobody but it stopped the bleeding from the year previous which was the lowest rated Oscars since they've been counting the numbers and and so it it did stop the bleeding a little bit of a little bit of an upset but it was still like the second lowest rated Oscars ever so doing this the second time in a row at in in a year when there's probably no blockbuster movie like a Black Panther nominated for anything and so there and and were also experiencing that so I what I what I would call awards fatigue and with the Oscars being the last big awards night of this particular season coming off of a string of big events Sunday that included the Grammys in the Superbowl there's a sense that it again the people could be a little bit exhausted and so little suspense this year as well the for acting Proby seem to be already locked up a boring it up say you'll see Joaquin Phoenix with again for joker and that Renee Zellweger when again playing Judy Garland Brad Pitt when again for playing Brad Pitt and and then Laura Dern winning again for the Netflix movie marriage story and it could be an upset there there was last year when Glenn close didn't get her Oscar with Olivia Colman instead so maybe there will be some upset along the way and there's some sense that if the if nineteen seventeen doesn't win the big prize if you go to the Korean film parasite which would be really exciting that the industry loves that movie but for the most part it just feels like a long award show without anything to otherwise grasp onto in terms of event television so it it it will be challenged to opponents of out of the ratings basement I think although yeah averaging somewhere under the ground thirty million viewers that's hardly a base with that's a big number for anything on television anymore but still what what did the Oscars used to be able to get thirty to thirty million or twenty nine million viewers this as quite a bit of a drop and we're seeing a unique thing with the streaming services you mentioned a marriage story on Netflix also the Irishman on that flick so it's like AT T. V. events mixed with the movie event will curry is and Netflix got a lot of nominations actually was more nominated in the other studio but the net but Irishman has got a lot of limitations but hasn't been able to pull through in terms of winning awards nineteen seventeen kind of sold under more Scorsese hasn't won any directing awards the acting awards are going elsewhere except for Laura Dern and even with with with Robert deniro and Al Pacino when Joe Pesci and I think Pacino and has she would have been from wonders in the supporting category but Brad Pitt seems to be owning that right now so yeah it there a player for shore but they still haven't got that big win a year ago was all about Roma the foreign language film this year it's really about Irishman and marriage store that neither one is expected to do well in our Richmond hasn't won any really big moving forward prize the golden globes are the sags or anything else so they're still basically knocking at the door and they have been let in in terms of nomination so definitely Netflix is a player but the industry is still not really keen on the fact that their movies get up on the service so soon after they get any kind of a theatrical window so it's still push and pull between this disruptor and old school Hollywood it's funny earlier you said that Brad Pitt played Brad Pitt in once upon a time in Hollywood I think Al Pacino is plain Al Pacino in scent of Jimmy Hoffa is in the and he just screams now he doesn't even risky to anything it's okay now judge oppose you're right it is star power absolutely he's got that that unique quality that everybody loves TV guide magazine's Matt Roush by the way the Oscars are tonight at eight o'clock on a BC ports at fifteen and forty five powered by Red River technology decisions aren't black and white think rad WTOP news time is nine fifteen and we go to J. "TV guide magazine's Matt Roush is joining us and she was amazing in the sopranos but even better in my opinion in nurse Jackie and Edie Falco is back math yes and somewhat of a surprise that she comes back and she will do her first series lead in a network broadcast network show on CBS of all places she's going to be playing Tommy which is the name of the main character name is Abigail Tommy Thomas so tell me like her nickname she is the first female police chief of Los Angeles and the way the story line goes and and so she's not particularly politically correct and she has a really tough skin but she has a pretty cool head and she's perfect for this because she cuts through all the political nonsense she is trying to do our job she's a cop first characters also may possibly controversially here for CBS show she is gay but she is also got a got a family who the strange tremors so there's a lot of aspects her character and of course Edie Falco plays that quite brilliantly I think for her to do network television is kind of a coup for CBS to get her to do this part and even though the show itself is a procedural and it's a little formulaic at times the the storylines I've seen so far about the first three or four episodes are interesting enough and just watching her like cut through the nonsense of it that's what you want to see you want to see Edie Falco breaking through glass ceilings they and nobody does it better than ET and yes you have a bunch of enemies for both sopranos a nurse Jackie so if Saddam thinkable that maybe they would actually pay attention to someone on a broadcast network so if her name is the Falco I can't wait to see it honestly so if it's starting in February it's just as a spring run I guess yeah you at this point where the mid season so shows that men sitting on the shelf republics gonna be like a thirteen episode run and then I'll see whether it's a show for the future if it if it ever takes off on Thursday I expect that the the show is going to get enough attention that it may be one for the future but but also the networks are doing shorter and shorter season so the show that replaced a so called evil which I really liked on Thursdays only had a thirteen episode run and that was purposeful they I think they were now in a place where less is more Schering time periods and and also just having to be running throughout the year because they can't turn a blind eye to things like streaming and so this is actually a pretty good get for CBS and that is Matt Roush of TV guide magazine joining us here on KMOX it's Jamie progresses employee of the month to month in a row leave a message at the hi Jim hit me Jamie I just had a new idea for our song with the name your price tool so when it's like tell us what you want to pay Hey hearing from bone was what wine you say will be found coverage options to fit your budget then we just all the finger snaps will acquire goes he was coming after they've come at Jeff yes no maybe anyway see a practice tonight I got a new lyrics to the referee as with the insurance company affiliates price and coverage match limited by state law you.

"Ceremony is tonight's bringing together a star studded performances with us to talk about it is TV guide magazine's Matt Roush so Matt what are some of the best TV moments you're expecting tonight well if if if as usual there are gonna be a lot of tributes to to great that music legends such as you're gonna see a tribute to John pride for money rate is always a favorite you're gonna see a big is all star salute to the slain rapper Nipsey Hussle John legend a DJ collagen meek mill are going to be part of that it was a big hit songs from the last year was old town road Billy ray Cyrus allows acts but a lot of people have covered it so they're expecting surprise guests to do sort of a mega mashup of a big hit song from today and then in one more curious things you might not expect to see on the Grammys is going to be a salute to the the movie fame I think of going to tie into like education in schools or whatever but Debbie Allen who's associated with original same choreographed this piece that's going to have this very eclectic cast of people so Josh will bell who's a violinist and misty Copeland who's a ballerina common who's a rapper Cindy Lau per Ben Platt who was dear Evan Hansen John legend than that one too you're gonna get interesting to S. like run DMC and Aerosmith a classic pairing of Blake Shelton with his his significant other Gwen Stefani performing and so it goes on like that but one aspect of the Grammy's it's interesting this year is that it as it put the best face forward on the music industry the recording industry of southern recording at the cabin itself is being oiled by some behind the scenes turmoil where they ousted their their chief executive and she's been going on even CBS this morning which I thought was kind of brave of them since they're all about promoting the Grammys but they put her on to alleged irregularities in conflict of interest in the voting procedures for the Grammys and and and so there is some role I guess some public relations interest the dilemma there for them but I imagine that if it's even reflected in the show itself that that they will keep moving forward and I try to put the best face forward were like I said yeah that's an ugly situation and I have heard concerns that it's going to overshadow at least some elements of the ceremony tonight yeah I think if there were some of the performers who were sort of on her side and agree because there have been controversies over the over the over the years about can it be the inclusion of a certain kinds of artists and and and representation who wins and who even gets nominated and and she was trying to bring some of that to light and then looks like they pushed her out so I think that could create a real interesting situation because once the every special music people get in front of microphone you never know what's gonna come out they may not be going for politics they may be going for internal politics okay TV guide magazine's Matt Roush thanks so much the Grammys by the way start tonight on CBS at eight o'clock a big birthday today for one of rock and roll's guitar heroes Eddie Van Halen could always absolutely shredded the Golden Globe Nominations: Netflix Leads — In Both Movies And Television
"Golden globe nominations came out of this morning so that's going to error the seventy seven golden globes will air on January fifth the Beverly Hilton hotel with Ricky Jr vase is the host the seventy seventh annual golden globe awards it's always it's always a fun time because the actors everybody very very relaxed that might be one way to say it they're very relaxed well a lot of them appear to be have snapped in old sold now Matt Roush is on the line Matt good morning how are you pretty good how you doing good to have this chance to chat with you John Heinz in for Dave Lee here and golden globe nominations coming out here and and we're learning more and more about this a couple of my favorites made the cut including Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin for the Kaminski method which is just a I just I just that is a a marvelous marvelous shell yeah and they really do love it it didn't get quite as much love by the Emmys and all but yeah it did well for them last year at the golden globes I think Michael Douglas one and maybe Alan Arkin dead but aunts and sort of the show so that was good so good showing from them although I do think when it comes down to it what's probably going to win the big prizes this year because of the show this what the Emmys last year is Amazon's flea bag starring Phoebe Waller bridge and she's a real rising star in the show was so traffic is only six episodes for to see them then and still that so made a big impact and it's what the critics awards as well so yeah and then the marvelous with this Maisel as well the the Amazon show that the just dropped last weekend and and so people are Startin side are just now binging a probably but that one does very well at the awards to be yes and the the Kaminski method is a favorite of the golden globes and the golden globes do love shows that have sort of really starry cast on them like Michael Douglas coming back to television and that was a really big deal so another another show I think somebody beat some people might be surprised got a bunch of nominations is the morning show from the brand new streaming service apple but it's a very starry inside the baseball behind the scenes look at a morning show that has the Matt Lauer type scandal it was nominated for best drama and the two stars Jennifer Aniston Reese Witherspoon were both nominated and they're just big stars and and the globe I mean people like Jennifer Aniston just like tailor made for a globe nomination so even though that still got some X. reviews it's in the top tier of the drama series being nominated for the clubs the thing about that let me mention mark marvelous Mrs Maisel how many episodes do they drop when they drop for a season something they do to him this time they did eight episodes episode so and then when we look at this when we look forward to what's going on I'm curious to know this doesn't ever become like a precursor though for the Emmys doesn't because the Emmys are quite a ways away it's not as it's not as tied to the Emmys as it is seen as like an Oscar precursors of right look at this is like a bellwether for what's going to happen the Oscar nominations and what's really happening there is the fact that Netflix is has just released dominated the field in both television and movies with movies like the Irishman M. marriage story and even smaller films like you well actually with the but that Eddie Murphy movie dolomite is my name got a comedy nomination so did very well they got seventeen nominations in movies they also got seventeen nominations in in television with shows like the crown which just happened just dropped in amazing affect the third season a few weeks ago with a brand new cast including Olivia Colman as the queen Tobias Menzies as prince Philip and Helena Bonham Carter as the sister princess Margaret all three of those got globe nominations as well so they love that there is that a show that a lot of people milling would be familiar with called unbelievable it was a limited series true crime drama that's had a mirror weaver and Toni Collette played detectives and Kaelin beaver a young girl who was sexually assaulted and it dealt with this serial rapist is really just a great series but didn't get a lot of buzz because to get swallowed by all the Netflix stuff this would popped out and got four nominations which is as many of the crown and the most nominated TV mini series which was Chernobyl on HBO so again in a lot there's so much TV nowadays it's hard for anything to pop through well yes I heard you mention that more than once there is just an awful lot of television these days so that's pretty much the way it it what it comes down to to hear so what are you looking forward to see what's coming up what's new on the radar is there anything new on the radar well not a lot new but I will tell you one thing that is if you're watching TV this week in what if one of your habits of the watch wheel of fortune along with jeopardy that you're gonna notice the Pat Sajak is nowhere to be seen on the set of they're going into their big winner promotion they called the secret Santa give away and Vanna white is stepping in for Pat Sajak this the next week these episodes were filmed while he was recovering from a domino surgery and she's in a guest once before at least but but and then the many many years they've done the show but to have her doing the Pat Sajak they'll be startling for people if they didn't know this happened with those episodes airing this and next week and the Paley this budget Disney characters on the set as well because of the Disney promotion so I don't know what that means group is going to turn over letters or what it was in late night you know we were back in the days of Johnny Carson there used to be you know guest hosts were pretty much of a regular thing with the take a vacation they let celebrities coming together so the almost never see that anymore but for the next two weeks on James cordons sort of rambunctious late late show the show the comes on on CBS following call there he's got a guest host filling in while he goes in films with a Netflix movie and so we're gonna see Alicia keys and item later on you'll see Melissa McCarthy said and then Jeff Goldblum and and Harry styles field the rapper lots lots of the under some quite a few more so for the next two weeks are we different Gasol's every night on the on the James cordon show which is a really fun show a lot of people don't stay up that late to watch it but again I would like to see more of more of that like having people stepped in when when the when the when the host goes away so you don't want to repeat mode and just spread the wealth a little bit yeah one of one people are gonna that job all right well I'll tell you what Dave Lee will be back with you next Thursday I just get to fill in today and tomorrow he'll check back in with you next Thursday I mean next Monday it's Monday for goodness sake well it's a pleasure to talk to you John always yeah I was of a joint chatting with you Matt because you because you know the stuff and it's it's it's good thank you so much for the visit this morning my pleasure thanks again all right

"Minutes newsradio seven WW let's talk TV we have Mr TV guide standing by Matt Roush and wouldn't morning right we have let's see the marvelous Mrs what's your name coming up yeah may the last weekend we needed to talk about it because of the post thanksgiving stuff and but it's a real early Christmas tree I suppose but one of the best shows on Amazon that's when a bunch of ME the ready and the third season is dropped in what's happened this season the story of a pioneering female stand up comic in the nineteen sixties Jewish housewife whose husband leaves her and she finds her voice going in downtown clubs but now she sort of hitting the big time she's going on the road this season tickets Las Vegas he goes to Miami her name is in lights on the marquee she's the opening act for Johnny Mathis type thing and everything about her on the road is great some of the other subplots not so great but if you're on the road with Mrs Maisel at her side kick IT manager Susie bye bye Alex Borstein was also wants to meet here they're just a great team and everything about that it's just absolute delight for one of the one of the most fun things you can find in the streaming world good deal that's where we have old Pat Sajak goes down for the count then the steps in to save the day who takes care of the letters while Vanna white fills in for Pat Sajak well you know nowadays the letters kind of take care of themselves like an ornament anyway but none the less when Pat Sajak had unexpected the abominable Sir abdominal surgery she does she stepped in to get those in for the next two weeks you'll see that play out because during that time they were taping these big holiday episodes I guess the called the secret Santa holiday giveaway or some like that but anyway so we should be playing should be playing Pat I don't know if anybody's playing banner with the Disney promotion as well so that there's gonna be Disney characters on that so don't be surprised if you see goopy standing up there like maybe the need to turn the letters that could be fun yeah I did James cordon is take some time off to shoot a movie a gas and subs are there Alicia keys bills and yeah you you know you think about it that in the day the Johnny Carson guest hosts on a late night talk show with something relatively common it was always a big deal like Joan rivers with the but so you don't see that much anymore but he's he's taken if two weeks off as well the film is a movie for Netflix is also in cat the Christmas time he's a quite a big telling the late late show that comes on after cold air on CBS who's going to be Alicia keys on Monday you also see Melissa McCarthy Harry styles Jeff Goldblum who the who so I think that when they all come up they should be kind of fun to watch if you can stay up that late sure and then the okay golden globes are coming up in there earlier in the year than usual the nominations are this week and also you'll see the SAG award nominations this week three actors guild's you'll see what shows than what movies are popping in the race to the Oscars and everything else but the first one you'll see in January Israel is the golden globes the first weekend of January with Ricky surveys returning as host Tom Hanks is going to get the lifetime achievement award and that with the generous is is going to pick up the second Carol Burnett award for comedy so golden globes always a big deal and it's the first big splashy movie slash TV awards so you'll see in twenty twenty and the nominations will be by Justin on that this week how's your the man you took time out from watching TV just to do this my pleasure get back to work will talk to you you bet thank you but all right five for the one five fifty one at seven hundred WLW Tom rivers in London here in just a couple of minutes I will tell you my friends that day a Kerry at the Kerry dealerships all ten of them all represent a Kerry automotive dot com have every and I mean every make and model car truck especially as you be all there Rita perusing check.

"Insiders Matt Roush with us here on Monday mornings and WCCO talking all things television Matt how are you doing pretty well of dancing with the stars is return and thank goodness it looks like a little better line of the last one we saw it's true but they've had actually one little change in the program since I actually thing off my notes that they just announced the show premieres tonight it reminds you that as silly as the show sometimes seems it is a very difficult competition and the you have to really be on your game and people do tend to get her on the show Christie Brinkley who was one of the headliners on this season supermodel and but but she broke her arm during this this training process pretty recently and her daughter by the name of sailor who's a sports illustrated model so filling in the her mother's footsteps as the supermodel is stepping in sort of the last minute but such might show when you tune in you'll see one by the name of sailor Brinkley cook who is the daughter of Christie Brinkley will be performing but other than that you're right it's it's people who are you actually heard most of these people I think I would I think a pretty good chance anyway also on the more mature side of things is merry Wilson one of the original Supremes and she's seventy five thought well hopefully she can move issue I know we we know we can she can sing you've got James vanderbeek who was from Dawson's creek you've got a couple of singers including Lauren Elena who the country star and then you've got rely more otaman ray Lewis from the world of athletes and of course the bachelorette it seems like when you finish the season the bachelor bachelorette you're going to go on to that so and so that happens with warmer weather with Hannah brown who took a lot of people's attention this summer and and then you're sort of locked in and you've got killed Mitchell who used to perform with Keenan Thompson still a stalwart on SNL they were both child stars on Nickelodeon so that that kind of a performer also tends to show up here. and you'll see whose careers get revive who falls on their face there was a fair amount of controversy when Sean Spencer the former White House press secretary was announced to be on the show and Tom Bergeron even the very affable host of the show let it be known that he had the console with producers and begged them not to have anybody who was polarizing politically on the show this season but that did not happen the cruisers of course always want to make noise with the so like this and sometimes outrageous sort of against the grain casting as part of that process Matt what do you think about the weekend Emmy awards carries your thoughts on that well it's the sort of the biggest award show of the year there is no host of that is something new happening at award shows the Oscars with without one this year and it's it's sort of a lose lose proposition to host the show sometimes that there there's these huge huge things that and even if you get a pretty good monologue sometimes it's like you just slow the showdown so maybe the idea here is there are so many TV shows now so many awards the maybe it's best just to go straight to the meat of it all and and go there but I think it's actually a harder field to predict this year than most years there's only one to me slam dunk winner and that's in the drama category with game of thrones and that's just basically because of scale and scope there was a lot of backlash against the show in its final season about how the end of the story my father to me a lot of that was sour grapes to me at least the end of the story the book you're still have never ended so I think at least they can figure out a way to end it in a show like this ending always feels more diminishing then beginning but still it was a big big season people look forward to it and the production values on that show were amazing the other nominees there are better call Saul bodyguard killing eve from BBC America which I love Ozark pose succession and one network series this is us the networks almost invisible DMUs anymore but I do think the game of thrones with thirty two nominations that's like a record that's a lot well speaking of a spiel about Veep. yeah in comedy the conventional wisdom is the the Veep would win the last three times it was eligible it was not eligible last year Julia Louis Dreyfus and take care of herself a year ago but but the last three times the one for best comedy when you're on that kind of a role you never know when it's going to end or begin and again it was the final season of the just like with the final season of game of thrones so you have to think that it's favored but there are some other really strong comedies in that category including last year's winner the marvelous Mrs Maisel from Amazon prime video you've got berry on HBO the so what bill hater it has twice as many nominations as deep and so called flea bag also on Amazon a British import series that has gotten so much buzz in recent weeks and and it's just a really traffic's theories and Phoebe Waller bridge the star that show is amazing the way she's like talks to the camera lets you wonder messy life that's a great series Russian doll got a lot of but this year also on Netflix and there's this little show that could I think you know about it it's call **** creek from pop TV became a big hit on Netflix when they have has even begin they're very quirky series the fact little so called since creek made it on the into the into the comedy series category that's quite an achievement for little so like that but I have to think that the in game of thrones are probably the likely winners but I think in comedy it's a little bit harder to really choose yeah it's gonna be fun there's so many different categories matter I guess to go to a mall if we had the more time there's so many to talk about the docu dramas all by themselves but in the meantime I will watch this weekend I look for to talking next week today to see who you thought the if the right winners were picked or not yeah that is it there's there's never it is never consensus and the same time I I every every day I get in my mail why didn't answer that get nominated if you look at the ballot there are hundreds and hundreds of shows nowadays so many more than there used to be and for anything to break through the clutter that isn't already famous written already successful it's really hard to get a nomination nowadays for the image there so many actors there so many roles there so many shows and it does sometimes seem like the same shows get nominated and stars. over and over and over again every once in awhile one breaks through and in that case I read them on a bit but we'll see who wins and hopefully they'll be a few surprises along the way.

"ZZ Top here tonight at the Minnesota state fair on the final night of this fair record setting fair looks like crowd wise we'll talk more about that through the morning right now to bring in our good friend Matt Roush of TV in Sattar hi Matt. Hey Alex Trebek it is front and center again yes indeed and that's good news because of question I've been getting asked a lot over the summers house Alex doing you know he was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer during last season the thirty fifth season of jeopardy and he kept working and he was taking his treatments and and and all of that and the people believe it but really been rooting for him and and last week he produced a video that showed him back to work he's been back to work since mid July celebrity take I'm sure at least like a month or so does work if not worth of no more of the new season the thirty six season he started work on his seventy ninth birthday he reported that he is finished his can't chemo treatments for the cancer and that he is on the mend and apparently he's back on its feet which is really good news for fans of this classic quiz show when the legendary host and and so hopefully he'll be able to keep going as long as he wants to win and we'll see what happens but it's it has been a concern for people who have been following the story of this the host and his battle with cancer so with that that's good news at least for now and the show was well on and and this series will return a week from today so if you've been missing jeopardy the last six weeks or so at that during its regular rerun season it'll be back with new episodes starting next Monday TV front as well and reality show dog the dog the bounty hunter in there some sad news Ron that want to map yeah he's that that that that doctor doing dog Chapman who everybody knows of dog the bounty hunter very popular reality TV star he's back with the news here read this week called dogs most wanted dogs was what it will start Wednesday on the A&E any channel but this season it's not just about him fighting the bad guys and and looking at people you're going after fugitives on the run but is also dealing with a personal tragedy with the battle virtually unsuccessful with cancer of his beloved wife Beth who is often his partner as he was that what he would go around taken down the bad guys and so this season also deals with her ordeal. there are unsuccessful battle with cancer his hospital vigil so there's a lot of personal stuff in the season as well but he's also carrying on the job which is what people like to see in and I think that this will be a impactful season for people who've been watching dog and Beth over the years but it's a very sad story that she passed away in June but they will honor her with the up with those of the season so that is beginning on Wednesday on a any here Minnesota we still have that Mary Tyler Moore statue downtown in Minneapolis and we lost one of the towns from that shown some others Valerie Harper yes the beginning the weekend I think on Friday it was that it was announced that she had finally succumbed to her own battle with cancer you know several years ago she went public with her diagnosis of an inoperable bait brain cancer but she was able to carry on with that for quite a long time she even did a seat she even to the cycle of dancing with the stars and lasted several weeks even when she was fighting the cancer so she's been a hero to very many people but she was always a hero to people because I wrote it was one of the most beloved characters on the Mary Tyler Moore show animators star she got her own spin off which became very highly rated she won a bunch of enemies during the years and so even though she had a couple of career set backs this unit within the sick call name Valerie but in the summer disputes she got fired and the havoc they carried on Valerie without her the caller Valerie's family than the Hogan family but but she went on and kept working and a lot of stage stuff and eventually realized with merry Tyler Moore in a TV movie and then even brought all those cast members together for a hot in Cleveland appearance where for one last time all the women for Mary Tyler Moore show got back together on that show for a memorable reunion shortly before Mary Tyler Moore passed away we want Sally Harper at the age of eighty and she had a great career and you well no we all still love the Mary Tyler Moore show mantle we talk again next week and it will be just closer to the start of the traditional TV season then I got some Netflix things along talked about Disney things so look for to talking in next week and have fun at the US. open or did you already go I did go this weekend was beautiful there so but with sorting out of soccer last night with Djokovic spelling out it's great television so I'll keep watching on TV for the rest of the week Matt gray here you as always here on C. "She can follow on Twitter at TV GM, Matt Roush. So let me bring in Morgan because I promised if we did a couple of minutes on game of thrones game if their coverage, I would allow her to chime in and get your thoughts on her show, the bachelorettes. At the exact same TV history. Let's make that very clear mad. Do you even bother with those? I mean look the bachelorette still successful. Very successful. I mean. Yeah, and there's always a place where guilty. Pleasure on television for sure. I, I did. I did watch a few seasons in the early days, just know how a played out when it was easier to watch reality shows that eat up two hours a night and back when there was a lot less television. But these days I mean I I keep up with it in terms of names. We have people at work who do cover it, because it is a one of those kind of shows, if you're watching it, you're definitely addicted to it. You would not watch this show casually. I mean that's one of the good things about it. It definitely draws people in. And it keeps them coming back, depending on who they do. What I don't like is when they start showing up on other reality shows contestants and it's like you know what reality prostitutes? Because you have no skill accept. The fact that you were cute enough to get on bachelor bachelorette other than that. I mean I totally get it. But I'm not much for watching people test romance onto you. I don't think any of it is real. And the show, I liked was the one that that that aired on lifetime. That was the fictional show that whip behind the scenes of a bachelor type so-called unreal. I love that show because it made it look so horrible now Morgan, what, what is it that stands out to you about this is this season bachelor at special or is it just the same thing, basically? No, it's pretty much all the same over and over. But it because it really it's the theme blot points. It's the same drama. There's always going to be guy is fighting each other over the girl, if it's the season of the black, the bachelor, where it's thirty girls, there's always going to be girls arguing fixed by what do you like it so much? What is it about its addicting? It really is addicting. And you know my love life. Well, it's a train wreck. Worse than than I do. I haven't gotten so desperate that I have to go on television to find. It makes me feel a little bit better about myself, I can feel Matt's is real. I mean, this is somebody who wants every amazing show on television and you're talking about the bachelorette bachelorette, and it's not the bachelorette because the bachelorette is finished. And then bachelor in paradise is going to be starting up soon. They all in paradise a nice place places. But then they shovel the rejects onto an island. And that is some quality television and FOX is brought back paradise hotel. The last couple of weeks ago. This thing, it's, it's a thriving genre. No question about it. But, but, but, but the truth is that it is. You know, like you said it is a dictating. If this is this is your poison man, it, you swallow it wholeheartedly. And to me, it's like it's like a soap opera without actors. Although those people are acting in most ways they know what roles they have to play. The also the worst. They are in terms of their personality, or the most ex- extremists in say worse, the more extreme you are the more face time you're gonna get on these shows, whether you're a real housewife rebounder, Abacha arrested intestine. So, so it it is all it all playing that game. But they're sort of like unscripted soap operas, and I think that's what pulls people in 'cause I, I understand good soap. I mean I'm still watching Grey's anatomy, after like, what is it like twenty years now? So so, so those kind of things that'd be. But this is like a soap opera with, with a amateurs, Morgan, don't ever put bachelorette in the same sentence. Came ever. Blasphemy. Their own TV guide. Senior critic Matt row. She can follow on Twitter at TV, GM Matt Rauch, Matt, really appreciate the time. Thank you so much anytime thanks again. Coming up next. We're gonna talk about this study that found people gossip fifty two minutes a day, normal people not people like Morgan Stanley fifty two different stories that we've got that and a whole lot more coming up next on PM Tampa Bay..

"Critic, Matt Roush, you can follow on Twitter at TV GM, Matt Rouch, Matt how are you? Doing pretty well. Thanks, ryan. We've got a lot to get to here over the next few minutes. We'll talk a little bit about what people should binge watch. Because there's a lot of binge watching that happens around the holidays people have some time off that's how they wanna spend. It also will preview twenty nineteen but real quick between now and the new year there are a few big things happening in the TV world. What stands out to you? Well, this week one thing in particular is that on Tuesday Netflix, which of course, never slows down for anybody. They're going to present a standup special from Ellen Degeneres who hasn't done stand up in fifteen years. And also, this is still can't believe she's been doing the daytime show for fifteen years, but it's made her a fortune, and it's made her super successful. She produces as well as performs, but you'd never done stand up and all of this time. And so the show that she's doing for net. Flicks is called relatable, the idea here being is she still relatable after becoming like kazillionaire. You know, is she still like somebody that we can relate to well. I think we probably can but tied in with this is the fact that she gave an interview this weekend to the New York Times to promote the special and indicated there that when her contract is up which recently signed to take her through twenty twenty. She may walk away from the daytime gigs or the way way back when I don't know what her next chapter is. But I do think the daytime would really miss her. There's something that's really so upbeat and winning about what she does. It's one of those hours. Feel-good television, the TV really needs especially in the daytime day part. So I think if she does decide to go. It would it would be a real loss for the industry. But then again, Ellen Degeneres has a lot of talent here. She's she's come back from other things that we know her show was cancelled after she came out. And now she's so popular with a lot of people and doing stand up this could be a new avenue for her. And also showing a bit edgier side the idea that she's not quite as nice as she seems to be a daytime. 'cause who could be you know, it's really interesting if you look back after Oprah last daytime TV that that slot was really kinda filled by Ellen Degeneres. I it took a minute, but she is pretty much become the go-to daytime TV show and the one that's really captured the audience's attention. Yeah. I think so she didn't have quite the cultural clout, Oprah's know, Adamy nobody's gonna ask Ellen to run for president that sort of thing, but she is very tropic within her show. There's a sense that there is a purpose to the show a social purpose. I'm at the same time. It doesn't take nearly as serious. As Oprah and anybody else did it's really a fun hour. It's kind of like what Rosie o'donald did only taking it to the next level and being a much more likable person in that regard. So you know, it's been a great run for her. And we'll see whether she continues when in a couple of years, but for now, it'll be kind of fun to see her do something a little different sort of taking her back to her comedy roots. Let me ask you this about Netflix because Saturday Night Live did a little net flicks spoof recently. And and I thought it obviously had a lot of truth to it in a sense is Netflix over saturating their programming. I mean, there's like a gazillion things. Every time. I go on Netflix. Ten new things that I don't even know what they are anymore is are they overloading with with quantity these days. I think it is quantity. There's a lot of quality and what they do. And what the important what all the things, but is almost impossible for even someone like me to understand what everything is and miss. What is happening? And and it's what I really despair over. This fact that the things that really matter on that flex it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff and to really call attention to the ones that matter the really great shows are putting out there because no matter what they're doing every single week. It's like a flood of shows a great show premiers on Friday. But then there's eight other things that are happening on that Friday, and although you can pretty much tell which one matters. But how does the consumer now? And I think a lot of these things get lost. And and how, you know something premieres, and then the next week there's another premier, and then there's another premier whereas like with Amazon, and Hulu and some of the other streamers, they tend to stagger them a little bit of someone, you know, they're in the movie business as well. Netflixing? I was reading a piece today saying that, you know, most studios just put out, you know, thirty movies a year if you're lucky they put out like twenty two. You know, two or three times that many just a regular movies and on a given weekend. It's a movie it's a documentary. It's the it's a series or maybe it's too serious. There's children there's animated, and and you know, they're trying to be everything to everybody. But it does become a point where it is too much. And it's really hard to really call attention to the things that matter on on their service and a lot of their things are really really good though. I'm afraid they'd get lost and get buried, and I think some of the creative community as happy as ever to have the freedom and the money to produce what they're producing net. Flicks. Did they get a little bit frustrated with the fact that it's really hard to give them the promotion and the attention they deserve when they're doing something really extraordinary. We're talking to TV guide senior critic Matt Rouch for the final time in twenty eighteen you can follow him on Twitter at TV GM. Matt rash one final thing. I wanted to talk about before we get into a two thousand eighteen recap and a twenty nineteen preview. There's this show called timeless which seems to be like a cat, and it's got like nine lives. What's the latest on this one? On on NBC. We'll definitely have three live life happens on on Thursday. And the idea here is that timeless was a really enjoyable time. Travel adventure aired on NBC it was canceled after its first season. But fans really went to town to beat the drums for this and so- NBC relented and gave it a second season. Still a lot of loyal fans, but not enough to really be successful by network standards. So it was cancelled after the second season. But it ended on a cliffhanger like a really bad cliffhanger like one of the main characters the show was dead. Although, of course, there's a twist if you go back in time I was somewhere in time you can bring him back. And so the the fate of this character Rufus the pilot of the time travelling vessel was in jeopardy. So you don't like to leave a show on a cliffhanger like that. You know, wouldn't fans are watching a show for two years. Nothing's more frustrating than having your show, not really end. So again fan outcry a lot of talk between the network and the studio can we make it to our movie that will close things up yesterday artists for holiday treats. On Thursday to our series finale at least for now. But definitely they're gonna tie up. Some of these loose ends. And the story is gonna take them to the gold rush in California. It's gonna take us to Korean war during Christmas time, they'll be flipping through time and having adventures, and and hopefully resolve enough of the story that at the end of the two hours fans will feel satisfied that they got that final chapter of a show that they really liked and because they made a lot of noise. And unlike a lot of shows they were able to get like, you said a second and third life for this thing. So it's kinda cool when the fans win one, and as a Christmas treat is kind of a nice thing to have so Thursday timeless will end once and for all and better not be on a cliffhanger. Sometimes fans can really get voices heard. We saw with Brooklyn nine nine in a couple of other shows we're talking to TV guide senior critic, Matt rouse. Alright. So around the holidays people have some time off they like to unwind and do some binge watching taking a look back at two thousand eighteen what are some of the big shows? They should go check out. Well as nicely coincides with the top ten list as we all put them together. Critics do with this time of year. And so mine is being published this week in the new issue of TV guide magazine. And among the highlights of this top ten list ones that are very easy to stream or available to stream anyway include my number one pick which is the final season of the Americans on FX. Yes, that one is you can you can watch all six seasons on Amazon prime video also on Amazon we've got season one and two season to just dropped a few weeks ago of the marvelous MRs Mazel comedy series, then all dark and twisty. But I also tell you one of my other favorite shows of the year, aired originally on BBC America, it's called killing eve. It's just a funky spy drama about a female spa. A female agent for I six who's played by Sandra. Oh from Grey's anatomy. But she's on the track of this female assassin played by Jodie Comber. And it's a dazzling role. But these two are kind of like obsessed with each other and a plays out over just eight episodes. So it's not too much of a time time suck here. And that's streaming on Hulu now and aired on BBC America. You now streaming on Hulu killing you loved that. Of course, a couple of net flicks things as always you would have on a list, including the comedy series, the Kaminsky method, which I really like from Chuck Laurie stars Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin is there sort of dealing with their old age in Hollywood and six episodes thriller bodyguard that was great. I love that. And it's sort of like a harking back to the early days of twenty four that one was and again, only six episodes on that one. So doesn't take a lot of time. But boy each hour is just edge of the seat. And I was safer, and I'd say from HBO this sort of dark comedy series berry that started Bill Hader has a hitman who turns to acting and his acting coaches Henry Winkler, which won him his first ever. Emmy, it's both funny and also kind of weird and harrowing, but there's no show quite like berry. So I say you can stream that on HBO on it's different apps and sites and things like that. So lots of lots of highlights from the year for sure there was a lot of good television in two thousand eighteen so let's take a look at twenty nineteen. What are some of the big things that have? Caught your eye. So far the you'll be looking out for well. It's gonna be a year as often many years are where a big big tent pole shows are going to sign off for good..
