"We need to do the same thing for our schools. Thank you, senator. Let's turn to politics. I'm looking at the map, you are in the recruitment season. Now, every day I listen to two podcasts on the Ohio State university buckeyes, and it's always recruitment season in Ohio. And John thune is complaining we took his best quarterback out of South Korea. Of course, we will vacuum up everyone. But there are 5 star recruits in their one star recruits, and then there are walk ons. And we don't need any more walk ons in Senate races. We need 5 star recruits. How's it going? Well, I've always said Hugh that elections are oftentimes decided on filing day, not on election day. Who gets in the races makes all the difference. We've got a map that's good. We can't fall in love with it, but we've got a good map and it's about getting candidates who can win both a primary election and a general election because winning a primary is not sufficient. You've got to be able to win a general election. You've got to be able to appeal to a broader cross section at the end of the day, you know, I studied chemical engineering in college. I was pretty good at math. Politics is about addition, not subtraction and division. So we've got to be additive as we think about candidates who can appeal across the spectrum of the center right and Republican, but also appeal to independence. The reason we saw such disappointing results in 2022 is because independent voters went they lean on the Democrat side would typically in a midterm election with a Democrat in The White House, we should have seen an R plus 5 to 15 advantage with independent voters instead they went D plus two. That is part of the reason why you not only the Senate candidates fall short in 22, but the house candidates as well. Kevin McCarthy has a 20 or 30 seat majority in the House. It turned out to be 5. I think when you look at underneath the covers, it's because independent voters did not have candidate appealed to them and they stayed on the Democrat side of the ledger. All right, let's talk about the swing the swing states. One of those is Montana, your home state. You've told me before you're working on it. Any updates? Yeah, so when you take a look at the map, there are three red states that have Democrat senators. That's Montana. It's West Virginia. It's Ohio. Each of these, each of these states, these three states are states where there's only one Democrat statewide elected official left. The Republicans are statewide in every one of those three states. Only John tester is the Democrat in Montana. Only Joe Manchin in West Virginia only sheriff Brown and Ohio. They are an endangered species. And when we think about 24, there's three red states like that, but you have peak over the horizon to 26 and a 28. It's zero. There's zero red states with Democrats up in 26. There are zero red states and Democrats up in 28. We either deliver the majority in 24 or we are relegated to a likely a minority for the rest of the decade. That's a chilling thought when you think about tax policy, think about judges, thinking about cabinet appointments, thinking about what they'll do the Supreme Court by adding four more justice, the Democrats have their way. So in Montana, what we've got the moment is we have of course Matt rose nails looking at the race. I understand also a businessman named Kim Shi is a navy seal. He's looking at the race and attorney general Austin knutson who's a statewide elected is also looking at the race, they would be strong candidates. It's going to be an interesting time to watch how this all sorts out, but we're paying very close attention to my home state of Montana. Is governor justice going to run in West Virginia. He's looking strongly at doing that. I've met with them. I've spoken to him. He's taken a strong look at getting the race. He's one of the most popular governors in the country. He'd be a formidable candidate. You just signed the largest tax cut in West Virginia history. He's taking a bit of a victory lap across West Virginia as he should. By the way, West Virginia is one of the reddest states in the country and voters are really upset with Manchin about partnering with Biden in that so called inflation reduction act. He cut a deal with the devil on that one hue. And it costing him politically polling data in western Virginia shows justice beats Manchin overwhelmingly. So justice gets in the race and I think he's leaning hard to do so..

We check the markets all day long here on Bloomberg with S&P and Dow futures, both little change, NASDAQ futures know, dragging down a quarter percent or 28 points, ten year treasury down 5 30 seconds you'll 3.73%, and the yield on the two year, 4.47%, Nathan. Karen will have more on markets and today's jobs report in just a minute, but first we are heading into the fourth day of the new Congress and the house remains without one key job filled. That would be speaker. Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is still shy of the votes needed to take the gavel and Amy Morris has the latest from our Bloomberg 99 one newsroom in Washington. The house adjourned last night after a historic 11th vote about 20 Republicans still refusing the cast their ballots for McCarthy, saying they want change in Washington. McCarthy has already agreed to a rules change allowing just one member to call for a vote to oust a sitting speaker, and he agreed to allow for more members of the freedom caucus to serve on the House rules committee. But so far Matt rose Dale of Montana says it's not enough. We need to have change. We need to fix this broken system. Republican congressman elect Mike Lawler of New York says the party can't let a small group of members dictate terms for everyone else. The freedom caucus thought that Kevin's support would start to fold. And that has not happened. House lawmakers reconvene at noon today. In Washington, I'm Amy Morris, Bloomberg daybreak. All right, Amy, thank you and we'll be following the next round of votes throughout the day here on Bloomberg radio, meantime another major event in Washington takes place at 8 30 a.m. Wall Street time. That's when the December jobs report is released, economists forecast a gain of 202,000 jobs and an unemployment rate holding steady at 3.7%. Here with Morris Bloomberg economic correspondent Michael McKee. Economists think hiring will slow dramatically and unemployment will jump higher. Just not yet. Even though the fed has been raising rates aggressively, it hasn't slowed the economy enough to affect the labor market. Fed officials say that shows no recession is imminent. They also worry it means continued inflation pressure. There are not enough workers for open jobs, which means employers have to raise wages. That's particularly true for service industries. And that makes December service industry jobs and earnings key numbers for fed officials as they decide how high they have to push interest rates. Michael McKee, Bloomberg daybreak, and Mike the fed will be paying close attention to today's jobs report, St. Louis president James bullard says interest rates are getting close to a level that could be high enough to bring down inflation. The point of this is that we've gone all the way back now to the pre inflation shock level of inflation expectations, macro theories tell us that that bodes very well for the future. And actual inflation. So this is a good signal for disinflation in 2023. St. Louis fed president Jim bullard is one of the more hawkish members of the fed, but he is not a voting member on the FOMC this year. Still, Nathan higher interest rates are not yet having a major impact on the economy, and that's the view from Carlisle managing director and head of global research Jason Thomas. The economy seems to be heading for an iceberg in the form of higher interest rates. Those higher interest rates have really not taken effect as yet. For most borrowers, it's really the December 19th reference date. So as of Q one 2023, floating rate corporate borrowers are going to face debt service costs that are about 50 to 60% higher than the experience just 6 months ago. Carlyle's Jason Thomas expects the fed to raise rates by 25 basis points at each of its next two meetings of you that's in line with expectations on the street. Well, the prospect of higher rates Karen helped send stocks lower yesterday all three major indexes lost at least 1% after hiring numbers surpassed estimates in the ADP and jobless claims reports. Sam stoval is chief investment strategist at CFR. It seems as if we are heading into 2023 the way a lot of strategists had been predicting where it's going to be a tale of two halves where the first half is likely to be challenging with high volatility, retest of the October low, maybe even a new low set, but then investors look across the valley and we start to see a recovery in the second half. We see Sam stovall says the fed could pivot and start cutting rates around December. Well, turning to the FTX saga now, Nathan, U.S. authorities are ramping up pressure on the inner circle of FDX cofounder Sam bankman fried and we get the latest live with Bloomberg Steve rappaport. Steve good morning. Good morning, Karen and Nathan. The plot thickens as prosecutors turned their attention to another associate of bankman freed. Their investigating former FTX engineering director nishad Singh and what role, if any he played in the crypto company's demise, Singh has not been accused of wrongdoing, and it's unclear if he's cooperating. Prosecutors already have two people from SPF's orbit in their corner, Caroline Ellison and Gary Wang pled guilty to fraud and are working with the government. "And we've seen rural do that. And we've seen Joe Brady do that. And that's why I like that group a lot better than I like a guy like Stefanski or a guy like Lafleur or guy like Shanahan because what they have works if it works really well. The conditions are right, but the conditions aren't always right. We've seen Brady in rural adapt and that's why I liked the Panthers coming into this season. Obviously, you know, there's only so much adapting you can do when you lose a player like Christian McCaffrey. Three with him one and four without him and speaks for himself. But, you know, you talk about kind of being surprised about that. And I'm not because even with burrow at LSU, I mean, they adapted they still threw the ball a ton, but they never threw the ball the same like you wouldn't see two games where they're really using the same carbon copy strategy. You see that even more ecology doing the NFL. Joe Brady's not somebody who's afraid to deviate from what he knows if it's going to help him win a football game. And we talked about Bill being the ultimate game plan coach. And I think that's a huge reason for success. I think that gets undersold all the time. How much of a game plan coach Bill Belichick truly is? Maybe the purest example of a game plan coach leagues ever seen. And they're facing another game plan team this week. Yeah, Matt Matt rose been pretty impressive. I mean, the record hasn't necessarily yet but he hasn't really had the quarterback. But I a 100% agree with you that he feels like the type of guy that is adjusting and adapting to his personality. And the one thing that you mentioned missing a guy like McCaffrey, the record speaks for itself, but also their passing game production has absolutely gone in the tank since Christian McCaffrey got hurt. And if you watch their first couple of weeks with McCaffrey on the field, it's not just him catching the football out of the backfield. It's also the gravity of Christian McCaffrey being on the field. There are so many instances that I could pull up from the first two weeks where two or three guys converge to Christian McCaffrey and it leaves somebody else open down the field or it leaves DJ Moore one on one with space or leaves Robbie Anderson on a vertical because everybody is so keyed on CMC. And once you take that out of your offense, now defenses are applying resources to Robbie Anderson and DJ Moore. And they're coming after Sam darnold because they don't have to worry about the back out of the backfield. And the running game has pretty much stayed steady without McCaffrey. They're exactly the same running team with McCaffrey as they happen without. But they're passing numbers have absolutely gone into the tank since McCaffrey left the lineup because of that injury. It's kind of weird. They have averaged 4.1 rushing yards per attempt with McCaffrey and 4.1 rushing yards per attempt without McCaffrey. Two hubbards, giving them the exact same production. But in the passing game, there is a complete difference in their production in that side of things. I mean, you remember me during the draft. I was a big I'm still a big trooper guy like me. "It'd be good. I like you know what i'm saying. This territory you. I mean what he's saying is like just make it your own because the character had been ret con so many times and it's he was just encouraging me to again. Obviously when i was eight years old it just was about being incredibly present again. Going back to your instincts. I think so much of the work that we do is is trying to shut out all the distractions and truly just be present and focus and that going into that meditative state is not what an eight-year-old was aware of but what he was able to bring out of me of just saying the first thing that comes out of the top of your head right like he kept just saying that. Just say the first thing that comes to the top of your head you know and we go forever and ever and average back and forth. And now i'm like was it a little bit of meisner like yo pulling from all these different techniques but i think about it And a lot of the scenes that are in the film with him. I didn't have many scenes with them. But the few scenes i have in the film are all improv. Awhile i mean. I think i had said something about his hairline being receding but instead of saying receiving i said receiving but i was eight. Really know what it was and they thought that was funny. I think they kept it in the film. You know that sort of thing where you just so uninhibited and just free well. I really think that you've been such an exceptional actress for so long At it's been so beautiful to see that sort of realized In lovecraft country. Where you've doing truly so much at once. Each episode is like a different project that you're saying i mean yes or no but the character for sure you know. The writing of me agreeing. The brain of matt rose book. It definitely was a world. Sometimes i'd get those scriptures like so how we gonna do this house way like somebody's waves to me and that beautiful challenge that excitement a little bit of fear though it just makes you stretch yourself and let he came to me at a time in my life where i was actually going through so much transition in questioning so many things and there's such a theme in lovecraft country in which you are questioning what is real what is reality. "Have been clamoring for a reunion of the popular TV sitcom TV guides. Matt Rose joined me earlier to talk about that re union. They filmed it last month. So it's actually in the can. This friends Reunion was supposed to launch HBO. Mac's last year was going to be the big event was gonna Harold this new streamer that's attached HBO. But of course, Kobe got in the way and it took a while to get all these people back together again. And they did it, which is the show went off the air making history. With each of the cast members getting a million dollar an episode for the last two seasons. They were paid something in the range of like 2.5 million each to assemble again. Then again, you think about it. Before 10 years. There were no bigger names on TV than Ross and Rachel, Monica and Chandler, Phoebe and Joey. And it made such superstars out of Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, Lisa Coud, Romana Plunk. They've all been working ever since, and now they come back together to remember the good old days. They're back on the soundstage where the Magic happened for 10 seasons and friends, You know, it's been off the air for a long time, but it's never really been off. The air was a huge hit in syndication. It was a major fixture for Netflix. It was one of the things that people I just kept watching and watching. And when the show moved from Netflix, HBO, Max that creates headlines in and of itself, So the alert friends has never really gone away and no doubt HBO. Max is hoping this also will help boost its membership. Well, no doubt. Definitely. There's gonna be a draw to get people to watch and see how they're interacting with each other. They will be reminisce. They're not going to play the characters they once played, Although I think there's gonna be some readings of some of the Major moment from the show. And of course, they're gonna look back on the big moments. They have guest stars like Reese Witherspoon, who played Rachel Sister for a couple of episodes. Tom Sell it comes in. He romanced Monica for a while so other big name stars will be coming in and reflecting James Corden is going to be sort of the emcee of the whole affair, So it should be a lot of fun to watch. And again as if anybody wants to know if the show is ever going to get rebooted. Well, look at that 2.5 million price tag just to get them all in the same room. "Weather maker. I'm ABC seven meteorologists Veronica Johnson in the still night, seven Weather Center currently in our nation's capital, 33 degrees at 6 47 on W M A L. Okay, So here's a crazy story. There has been a bunch of signs put up in Alexandria, Virginia. I'm specifically at a park called Bren Mar Park in Alexandria and I know this place and it's got in the signs say noticed. Fire Harms prohibited and it's got a picture of a Of a handgun. It's with a circle around it, and it's Xed out, sir, lets you know if you can't even read, you know. No guns were allowed here on its written in five different languages to really drive home. The point. So you know that concealed handgun permits. Don't even authorize your ability to carry a gun into this park, so it's become a subject of contention in a really bizarre stories popped up from all of this, Uh, there's a Second Amendment activist group in Alexandria, members of the Virginia Gray ranks. Apparently. According to their own admission to the Daily caller, they took the signs down, actually took them off the posts. They brought them to some other location, and then they shot them up. Now the signs were full of bullet holes now and then they brought the signs back, and then they attach them back to the post. So not to get it confused that this wasn't like some sort of drive by. They didn't come up and just start opening fire on these signs. They quite literally took the signs down, brought them to another location, shot them up and then brought them. Back and then spray painted things or at least gold markers. Words on it. Things like shall not be infringed, meaning their right to bear arms and the spokesperson, spokesman for this organization, Matt Rose, told the daily caller. That they want to put up signs will take them down. They want to go farther than that. We will, too. He said The signs were targeted quote to pull a little bit of a hit on the city's wallet, but not one that actually hurts people. They are targeting these signs that have been posted, Rose told the Daily caller. And they're the signs have been put up in Richmond and Fairfax County parks, and they were the first a series of quote. Proportionate response is Um and and they're claiming that the rest of the state can expect to see similar forms of protest soon to quote we're bringing the fight to places the right has not been brought to before. Places that have not seen protests were civil disobedience by gun rights activists before, and he wants them to repeal these ordinances that prohibits citizens from exercising their right to self protection. This is not the way to go about it. Right. This is not the way to go about it. This is what happens is I think the left purposely pushes people to the breaking point. And then when they do something, they point to it. Go see, these people are crazy. That that's what they do. This is not the way to handle something like this. I just think that, you know, I understand. I get what you're trying to do. I understand your frustration. You know, I understand the whole you feel like you're getting having your gun rights taken away in Virginia, which is absolutely happening absolutely with you up until that point, but taking the signs away, which, again you're is illegal. I'm pretty sure you know that to steal the size and then shooting them up and then putting them back. It comes across his kind of like a warning. It comes across in a way in which you may not have intended and I got to say it's kind of childish sorrow. The message that you're conveying is lawlessness. Not that you're not that your lawful that that you're trying to protect the public, but that you're conveying a threat is what you're saying. You know, You know what else he says To me? There was no woman involved in this decision. This was a group of man because a woman would have said, you know, we might want to think twice about this. I thought, I don't know if that's how do we know that we don't know that because women are the ones who think back to when you were younger. And if the guy's a bill like it, let's go do this. And when guys kind of get together, like like it expands, and and, yeah, I know what's to this knows everything gets crazier and crazier. And then if there's a girl there, a woman there who will say I don't know if this is such a good idea. And they kind of give him a little pause to think that's all I'm saying. I grew up with brothers I want would watch it happen all the time. And then it would take someone a girl to commit. And statement don't know such a good idea. Yeah, I think there are plenty of men and plenty of women who have reached their breaking points in a lot of issues. And, um, you know, this is This is again. This is an odd This is a deeply odd story. I saw the sisters What? What is going on? You know, Alexandria, Virginia, Right in the middle of an area is not known for, like gun crime or anything, but they're blocking people off from bringing their concealed their lawfully carried constitutionally carry guns into these areas. The responses to shoot up these times to take them somewhere else, shoot them up and then put them back up. And they claim that they're going to continue to do it. I'm actually amazed that this guy gave an interview on this subject that he just was like, Yeah, we did way did it. The cops didn't even know about it. By the way, the country like oh, the Fairfax Police Department, according to Daily Car is unaware of the incident that had been reported as of Monday morning, and now they're looking into it. Well, no kidding. The amazing story Anyway, There's any meaningful updates will bring them to you. But for now, just have some comfort. If you see these signs, they weren't actually shot on sight.
