"Of the House on the third day of the new Congress. Looks like House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is going down to defeat again in the tenth vote we're continuing to monitor through the afternoon. If you're feeling optimistic about the new year, it might say something about your political party or perhaps about where you live. A new crosscut Elway poll reveals a regional and political divide on how people are feeling. And Tacoma firefighters responding to a blaze in an encampment near south 24th and a street this morning put out the fire and then discovered a dead person at the scene. Police investigating as the medical examiner works to find the cause of death. If one of your new year's resolutions is to get out of debt, ABC News chief business correspondent Rebecca Jarvis has some advice. There's really three things you need to know here about all of this. First of all, people are taking on more debt. You might have done it over the holidays overall, people are doing it on their credit cards. Second of all, that debt is getting more expensive. The fed signaled, they're not cutting rates this year. That means those APRs are rising and there are things you can do to take control right now, wipe the slate clean and have a much better financially free year ahead. Gather up all of those credit card bills, flip them over and call the number on the back. And here's why you're going to call that number because you can ask the bank and the credit card company to lower your APR. And that might sound like, wow, are they really going to do that? Well, 70% of the time, they actually do. And you can even ask them to knock off some of the fees as well. Then you want to make a payment plan. Now, there's really two tried and true methods here. First, there's the snowball method. That means you pay off the smallest balance credit card first. You keep making minimum payments elsewhere, but you pay off the smallest balance first. This gives you that psychological jolt. You feel good. Oh, one down, a few more to go. Then there's the avalanche method. That is where you pay off the highest interest rate credit card first. Again, keep making those minimum payments. That method, avalanche, is going to save you more money, but you have to stick to it if you're going to make it work. So sometimes the snowball method just gives you the better psychological boost. And then again, is chief business correspondent for ABC News, Rebecca Jarvis. With the Supreme Court sent to your arguments over president Joe Biden's student loan forgiveness plan next month, the Biden administration has filed a Britain defense of the plan, ABC's Mark remould reports. In court documents the Biden administration is seeking to knock down perhaps the most tenuous aspect of the challenges to the president's plan, the right for plaintiffs to sue in the first place. The court is hearing two challenges one from a number of Republican led states and a second by two individuals. The Biden administration's filing first challenges the standing of both lawsuits saying neither should be allowed to sue and then second arguing that the secretary of education has the right to cancel debt to protect borrowers from the economic consequences of the COVID pandemic. Mark remalard, ABC News. The South Carolina Supreme Court has ruled the state 6 week abortion ban is illegal, Matt McClure, with the latest. The high court ruled Thursday that states 6 week abortion ban violates the state's constitutional right to privacy and is therefore unconstitutional. The court in a three to two vote riding the state's right to privacy applies to a woman's decision to have an abortion. The majority included justice Kay Hearn, the sole woman on the state Supreme Court, the Thursday ruling means that the state's previous ban on abortion at about 20 weeks stays in place for now. So this 12 year old girl ends up raising hundreds of dollars, and she gave it all to the homeless guy. Doesn't put a warm, fuzzy feeling in your heart. I don't know what will top headlines out there. It's safe to say that some Republicans in Congress probably didn't want this to happen. But it's going to happen in a joint session on January 6th every U. A number of states, including Pennsylvania, allowed for a greater use of absentee balloting due to health concerns over in person voting at polling stations and made the Corona virus pandemic in Pennsylvania. And he's expecting the same kind of treatment. Another big story out there. What is going on with the stimulus? But on behalf of Republicans to that stand alone proposal, he said it has no realistic passed too quickly passed in the Senate. And he also said that the chamber the upper chamber of Congress would not be bullied into rushing out to more borrowed money to the American people and giving it to those who don't need it because obviously it would go to everyone making up to $75,000 a year for individuals or for those couples making up to $150,000. Year. The current session of Congress expires on Sunday. All right, man, you just talked about the timeline. I mean, they're up against the clock. What is the word out of D? C. Does anybody think anything will get done with this? I mean, most likely not that is that the scenario that we're looking at right now, you know, the move by Senator Mitch McConnell yesterday really kind of effectively killed the bill, at least for now, although he's gonna get a lot more pressure, potentially today from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, who has been promising to filibuster a vote on whether to override President Trump's veto of an annual defense spending bill. The chamber voted yesterday to start debate. But then they adjourned until today. The bill in this We passed with overwhelming majority, So they have the votes to override that veto easily. He did, as you would say, you know, have a lot to do with computers and technology. Anthony Quinn Warner are authorities thinking that he was alerting people that he really didn't want. To hurt that many people. And they said that they that's what they believe that he clearly did not want anyone else to be hurt in this, but one of them, maybe make some sort of statement. Of course, that is, you know, unconfirmed at this point, but that is what really all of the evidence seems to be pointing to it that you really wanted to give a warning and didn't want people. Congress Passes Covid-19 Relief, Spending Package With Overwhelming Support

"Relief package was passed right before a bunch of existing coronavirus. Relief measures were set to expire on January 1st In total. The legislation came in at nearly 5600 pages. And while negotiations have been ongoing when it comes to this potential coronavirus stimulus package for quite a while now. It did pass with overwhelming support in both the House and the Senate. Rarely see votes that that look quite like that. Yes, especially these days. I mean a lot of times, you can't get congressional leaders. So our Ah let alone rank and file members to agree that the sky is blue on any given day. Rather, you know, you don't see it, especially a complicated piece of legislation like this kind of thing with such overwhelming numbers, But it did because lawmakers on both sides saying that they realized that You know, we're getting down here to the wire and things were going to be really, really dire straits for a lot of people after the first of the year, especially in one of the big things that was extended, you know that's what I mean a lot to a lot of folks. Is that the moratorium on eviction is being extended and some rent and you know, other housing relief is being extended as well. And then another aspect of this bill in again I'm joined by NBC News radio National correspondent Matt McClure is some funding for vaccine distribution and taking a look at how that's going these days. What's the latest? Well, you have being modern. A vaccine, of course, is the latest to be approved and to be distributed across the country. And right now we're looking at about six million of the doses of that newly authorized vaccine being shipped to about 3700 locations across the country. Nearly three million doses of the visor by on Tak vaccine already going out so you can add those two together and you get about nine million doses of those two vaccines now, of course. Rural areas of the country are really applauding this modern a vaccine going out because, as you probably know, Ryan, the vaccine from boat journey is much more easily stored. You can basically put it in a regular refrigeration unit. Where's defines your vaccine has to be sorted sub zero temperatures, so not a lot of rural areas have the ability to store that one. But the modern a vaccine really being welcomed by a lot more places across the country that might not have dense populations, and therefore don't have the ability as easily anyway to store this vaccine, and we've already seen some lawmakers, including some prominent ones get vaccinated on, that's gonna be a big step. I think that you're probably going to see a lot of people in the public eye getting vaccinated and letting people know that the vaccine is safe. It seems like it's part of their messaging strategy. That's right in the president elect Joe Biden is one of the latest to do that. He was receiving his vaccination on live TV yesterday afternoon and really counting the safety and efficacy of the vaccine, and he also sort of surprisingly into a lot of folks gave some praise. Theo President Trump for Operation Works Speed. And getting out a lot of these vaccines pretty quickly as well. So, yeah, he joins Ah, long list of public officials, including Vice President Mike Pence and others who have received their vaccination in a very public way. NBC News
