Why Billy Porter says he cant be a politician
"I'm Jonathan Kaye. Part and this is Cape Up. Billy Porter has a Tony for Kinky a grammy for kinky booths an emmy for his role as prey tail in the television. Show pose even. If you didn't know any of that you probably heard about that. Black Velvet Tuxedo Gown quarter war to the Oscars in twenty nine thousand nine hundred. It was an instant station and made the popular actor and singer in instant cultural icon. We talked all about that moment and how once he was true to himself. His career really took off and we talk politics. Quarter loves to talk about politics and explained during a conversation about the groner virus why he could never be a politician. Talk in October here at all right now. Billy Porter thank you so much for coming on the PODCAST. Thanks for having me. Okay so we gotta get the big news out of the way I and that is the Matt Galle. You and vogue teamed up to do a called. Hashtag met Gal Challenge. It was people going on instagram. To recreate the fashions that have come through the red carpet. Where did this idea come from? Was it. Yours was Anna winters? Well we started at me and my team started it with my own personal social media platform and audience. And you know with all the fabulous that I am and the stuff that people know me for. I don't think people realize how political I am and how serious I am. And so in this time I wanted to give my people something to distract them. A little bit While simultaneously not having to engage myself. Because I don't really feel very fashion oriented right now. I don't feel very silly right now. Like I'm having a hard time sort of mustering energy to just be goofy and filthy. I WanNa push you on that. Because at the met gala last year was when you were brought in as I guess a Sun Goddess or Cleopatra and and it was at the Oscars in twenty nineteen when you showed up in a in a black Christian Serio Tuxedo gown and I saw the instagram post or the Social Media. It just blew up and it was such an iconic moment. Do you understand. Just how big that Oscar gown you was. Yeah I understand on paper. I understand in theory. It's a really heady experience you know because I just found a space over the fifty years of my life to kind of just stand in my truth and get zero fs to anybody or anything and really just be authentic and so much to do. That wasn't about going by world much leads to do that was. That's just what to do. And you know there are conversations that need to be had in this world and when one has a platform as I have been able to build and create especially over the last couple of years I do understand the power and the impact that something like that could have. I didn't realize how big it could be I mean it literally speak of it as like B. O. A. O. In terms of my life before Oscar after Oscar like my life is completely different. And that's why I was pushing you on this idea you. You're saying you didn't feel like being silly. And yet before Oscar after Oscar is a great way to put it because when you strode across the red carpet in that Black Velvet Tuxedo gown. It was a thunder clap for a whole lot of communities. You told our friend or mutual. Good friend Tamarin on her show you said you spend a lot of your life quote unquote in the masculinity game. Talk about that what are you what did you mean by that when you said well you know from the moment. I could comprehend thoughts. My masculinity was in question and in our culture and our society masculinity as at the top of the food chain and if you're not masculine enough you're dismissed. I was sent to a psychologist when I was five years old in kindergarten after every Wednesday at school to talk to somebody because my family thought I was too much of it so from the minute I could literally comprehend thought the messaging I received was. There's something wrong with you. And it's based on how you behave and that needs to be fixed so I live my whole life in that. And then you know. Get into business and it's amplified one hundred times more You know and I spent the first half of my life and my career in that masculinity game trying to be masculine enough so that I can eat so that I could get a job so I could get paid so I can eat. There came a time in my late thirties. Early Forties late thirties. I would say mid to late thirty where I just got sick And I- extracted myself from that part of the toxicity of what it can mean and leaned in to all the things that I was told would be my liability all of the things that I lived as a liability. They weren't wrong. They the people were not wrong. You know I took every hit that I could take not being masculine enough. I took them all it then. I decided that I didn't

"We're going to tell you more about it later in the episode. But it's the best pillow ever sure is how are you doing? I am okay like I'm not great but I'm also not terrible so that's progress I like things are looking up on the workfront. I have a ton of work and like different sponsored content and things going on so that's exciting It's been pretty easy to get groceries. I just got a food kick delivery order so I mean I'm getting food which is great. I'M GONNA make banana bread tonight because I I have a bunch of overripe bananas. I think I might try making banana ice cream over the weekend. I would like to be part of that and by that I mean the recipient of some I will put some in the lobby for you also not to Zeile you tasks but if you wanted to try making peach ice cream I have frozen pizzas and I would also be very interested in that I love. Pj scream. It's like one of my favorite flavor. I know it came up terrible so maybe and I bought all the stuff to make the rose. It's roasted bananas. Caramelized van ice cream. Yom So. That's GONNA be next but I've peaches on the list. I am deeply interested in this. The problem I had with peach. Was that the peaches. You're supposed to like puree them and I was like no. I want chunks of peaches. Yeah and that was a terrible idea because the peaches on just didn't freeze in the whole mixture didn't freeze because my ice cream maker is like a pretty. Janke one and it chunks of stuff. Okay I have an idea what if you took some peaches and pureed them but then also took frozen pizzas and chopped up so that you have trunks. I think that could work. I think it it requires. Just re exploring yeah. I think this is a project that I would like to cheerleader through. I feel confident and you and excited about it and interested. Yeah I feel good about it so we're GONNA do the banana I but I'll already explore peach. Please report back. I will well. I mean not to me because I hope to consume it but to to everyone else. I'm very Soviet to the list of errors I will. I will keep you guys updated. Yeah how about you back? How are you I'm fine? I'm stressed But it's not related to the pandemic. I'm I'm okay up here. I went to the grocery store yesterday. I feel like I have really figured out my grocery store. Cech and what I do is go at like nine thirty in the morning because I think that people who have more traditional jobs have to like check in and be online maybe they can like duck out later but at like nine thirty. They're like proven nine thirty S. Everyone's at their desk at nine thirty. Yeah so that's what I go to the grocery store and that's typically also in their restocking things at the grocery store so usually even if it's not like it's in boxes and I can like grab whatever I need. I pulled a real care and move on Yesterday when I was at the grocery store because I really wanted to do so I really wanted salmon and the fish counter wasn't open yet and I was like excuse me When will when will the fish counter be open and the guy was like in about twenty minutes and I was like okay so that I did the rest of my shopping and it was probably like fifteen minutes later and I'd just like went and stood there and I was like Oh wait and then he ended up feeling awkward and going to get the guy for me who was very nice but I got Sam? Oh will you got your salmon. I know I had salmon in my fridge that I had to throw out. I'm upset because I got it. I think I hadn't paid attention to the days when I got it I got it from imperfect foods and imperfect foods is now dead to me because they're either like really late with all their deliveries or they. Just don't ship my box in charge for it anyway So I got salmon and I think it came already expired. It was very upset. Yeah you don't WanNa play roulette with fish. No I threw it away but I got like a week ago and I looked at it today and like that's pushing it with fish but I looked at it today because I was going to make it for lunch and said expires for twenty so I was like you sent me. Expired Fish Today is four twenty eight or four twenty nine. Yeah so yeah it. It was expired for a few days by the time I got it. Well if you would like some salmon I will trade you gonNa make like Cajun e salmon. He'll trade you scream thing that works okay. Let's let's get into our highs and lows. Why is high my high. Well Becca since you ass been an organization kick. I cleaned out my whole fridge. I saw it on instagram. My Fridge looks beautiful now. Think are dirty per se but you always have a lot of stuff in there and I was like. Oh wow she did a lot. There's always a lot like I threw out a lot of stuff like just things like you know those random things you buy like when you have people over like fig fig pace for cheese boards or all lives for Martinis and they've gone bad but they were in jars so it didn't smell or like do anything gross. It was just taking up space so I did a lot of order organization and then I got food. Hick order to replenish some of that stuff today. Which was good Yes that felt good. I I- tinted my own eyebrows. Yesterday using our friend Jackie's tutorial. Which like for me. One of my big things is my eyebrows. I have like like dark blond hair light brown to dark blonde but it bleaches ow or like some of the hairs are really really blind and like I. Just don't love it so I love having my brows tinted but it's a it's expensive and be. You can't do it anymore. So following Jackie's instructions as like. This is so easy. I will never pay someone to tint my eyebrows again. It looks really good. Thank you and I'm quite proud. Yeah I was really really nervous. Like Jackie heads. Talk me off the ledge like multiple times because I was like what if I turn out with black eyebrows or like what if I make them read. This is the time because it washes out not quickly but like quick enough that you know better now than the night before. Like a hot date or something. Akis hot tip is to dish soap on your eyebrows if they get too dark chuck is the best. She's the smartest. She just knows everything so. I'm very excited. I'm going to have a blog post up because like my people were exploding. The Amazon I need to know now like next week commute time. I'm so excited. What's your other one. I see it in here and I'm excited about it Well this is something I need you to do for me. I kindle came. I only got a kindle because so beca and I are really lucky. That for the PODCAST. A lot of publishers will send US advance copies of books. But I can't like now they aren't. They don't have access to warehouses and things they're doing everything electronically and I've been such a holdout for the kindle that is like I don't I don't want one I don't want one but I really want to read the next American royals book so I got one. And I'm GonNa be a kindle person now I mean not really like I'll always be a paper books person but for quarantine I'm going to be reading kindles. Welcome to the future and I need you to set it up for me. Because I'm confused I will. I will send you an article. It is really not that your so intimidating. I don't know why it's intimidating to you. You were freaked out before you even got it. It's not hard did he. Want active assures me mom knows how to do it so if my mom can do it. I feel like I can. Did you open it you know? I mean last year at first up you just have to connect to modify it just sitting on the counter. I don't know how to connect it. Takes you through the setup and like you just put in your life you would select your network and you put in the Password. Okay and then it comes preloaded with like the kindle APP. It's not like a phone like it literally only does this one thing and so how do I get net galley though so he'd go to net galley and you sign up for Matt? Galle the key put in your name and your information and then Once you are approved. There's a guide on their website. That tells you how it's super easy. Okay this all just feels very space age. I'M GONNA do it but I'm nervous. I have so much faith in neo. I feel like now my. Dm's are going to explode with people telling me an idiot and be how to do it like. Don't tell me about the kindle. Figure it out. You're not you're not an idiot. You've just you've done harder things you can. You can conquer this. This is Mike doing that. I would classify as rocket science. Which is harder setting up? Alexa or kindle I don't really remember the process of setting up. Alexa. 'cause Alexa was confusing. I just got my spotify on my Alexa and I'm feeling pretty good about that I don't remember okay. This is this is taking too long. We're we're we're getting off base. What's Your High Okay so my high continues to be recording ROM COM pods. Were almost done. I've been so busy so busy. we're almost done. We have two recording sessions tomorrow and then we are fully recorded. And my God. I know we've probably wiles. Yeah it's wild. We've probably done like thirty hours of recording for the past week and a half. So it's been on top of your regular job and the podcast So it's been a lot but then last night I got to hear Tape of the organized a of the first episode basically. Because sometimes we don't record with side character so you kind of just have to imagine it or sometimes when there's big group scenes we like record with two people at a time so I got to hear it. Like it's like the junkiest version of itself like it's not edited whatsoever but just how we did it sesame saying. I know I'm so excited I other high is that I I was complaining a few weeks ago. that all my weekends haven't felt weekend. -I you know do. Do you know what I mean. I mean none of my liens have been weekend because I've been amass. I know it's just like I feel like I have all the time scary instead of just Sunday scary and on Sunday. I don't feel relaxed but I had a real Sunday and it wasn't that Nice. I don't have a secret. It's not that I did anything different. I think maybe it was part of like being so busy and then getting a break that I did feel restorative just because I was less frantic than I have been. Yeah but I finished a book. I started a new TV series. I cooked like the end of the day I was like. Wow I feel great. Yeah so that's a good feeling. It was a really good feeling. Yeah suppose are mine. What about on the low front on the low front? I would say that I've just had a lot of micro just like little things adding up. I've been really irritable It made me feel better because I was listening to girl's gotta eat and Raina talked a lot about just feeling like randomly irritable in Cranky and I've definitely felt that way like nothing is is that bad but sometimes I'm just so cranky so- irritable and like the littlest thing will make me upset and I don't like feeling like that. Yeah but I think it's normal like a one raina talked about that like it was exactly how his feelings. What kind of normalized a little for me. I was like okay. Other people are feeling like this. Like I'm not a total raging bitch. You know who else was talking about feeling like this Melissa would health was she. I CAN'T IMAGINE MELISSA. Ever feeling irritable. She's so perfect. Yeah I think she posted it today. I'll have to look it up. I'm going to look at it. Yeah Love Her love Melissa. If you're listening to us she's not listening. I'm drinking wine guys. If you can't tell Becca what's your low I'm definitely feeling overwhelmed. I just taken on a lot and I feel like it's going to be this way for a while because now that we were recording. We're going to go into the editing process. And I don't know why we did this. I do this but we set a very aggressive pace for ourselves. And we feel we're both type threes myself and Rachel who's my co writer and producer and we very much want to stick to the time line and we're hoping to launch June first. So yes so. I'm I'm overwhelmed. But specifically I'm having stress streams about Rahm come Hans like a lot of them are nonspecific and I'm just like have like a worried feeling where I'm like God. Somebody's unlike forget to show up for a record or something. I don't even know what they're about. And it's not like anything's going wrong. It's like it's weird. Yeah but I do have a funny dream that I would like to share with the class. I'm ready so I had a dream class. Yes so I had a dream. That Chad Michael. Murray of one tree hill fame had started. Him had a huge crush on him..

"Less on your library tab and it'll it'll it'll be they're also make sure to follow us see never miss an episode so I'm GonNa do it we're going we live we're we're live we turn currently live plug anything in T- to start the show like yeah just sell the things I have a if you had headphones this would be funny saying well Wa wa you can handle that was the fact that you didn't notice that there's anything and then I realized that you didn't have headphones on and I was we can't you pretend but I I heard it and I was like this is really funny so Britain we met in two thousand seven L. U. C. L. quiet he talks to word two thousand so keep it there okay I I am and morning light in the main yeah so you are involved with that because you knew the morning light or who who are what banner you know but are we could go I looked through my emails found emails of US emailing Tim saying would the main be interested in doing this basically nano and I had come up with the idea of some sort of tour for the morning light yeah and then we had emailed him to say would you be interested in this and he said that Brighton ends a tour with Hawthorne Hawthorne Heights a couple of weeks prior and can be pushed the whole tour and then we came up with the idea me booked a bunch of shitty shows across the East Coast Yeah which she she we about half of them actually took place happened yeah there's as today you had to play outside the venue yes they wouldn't open it because you didn't sell enough tickets so Nanno Nanno was managing the morning and then you were like you were the promoters of the shows talent booking originally I was in high school by the way so jokes on you guys that Annaud is meant I was too yeah Nanos managing that back then yeah yeah yeah yeah can't see that those are finger quote by crazy yeah and then y- The and then you're the promoter trackside Hell Yeah Connecticut Connecticut did did the venue didn't exist before you like I tell people and then they would allow me to promote Chazan there because I was the only person who could get people to go there that's really it and why do you think you could get people to go there because you probably can dance very convincing did you do that paramore show that was a that video on the Internet it's pretty funny he searched paramore trackside it's only thing comes up I don't know how many views are on it at this point but hopefully it's a lot Firearm how did you convince their their agent to to let a High School Kid Book Shah Yeah they definitely did not know I would fax contracts out from my home telephone line and I just kind of had to pretend like we were legitimate and did you have any kind of a reference for how much the worth was for them or like just what whatever the agents saying here's your great yeah that would they would they pay for any ben coming because how would how would you have any reference no what I would pay five times what bands would make elsewhere and I would make zero dollars on the show if not lose money on sold out shows though is good time but tim used to do that we talked about that with Tim he would like cartel he booked in Phoenix and he paid yeah probably double a triple and so they were super pump to come and he'd always get the show and and they were always great shows like crack tracks either like we had great shows we would stuff everyone with much pizzas we could and then fry a bunch of weird stuff in the kitchen after the shows were done and then I would let the band sleep there if they wanted to and a k ever slept there now but I think we went to your you gotta stay at Your House so yeah so meanwhile just to bring Mike into the conversation because he's texting right now was going to get there he was doing the same thing in Massachusetts yeah very similar you were booking shows yeah really gets you know so we may Yoon to to doesn't nine right yeah right the we the Kings tour Ya yeah yeah right see your check yet managing versa versa merge it was we the kings the cab you guys and versa merge and someone else fucking there for tomorrow there for tomorrow six five six Jesus Christ all all play like five hundred thank you Matt Galle for creating the six Danville Dude that's too much and we were paying like Mr Smalls Theater and is a senior who to leave your drums up as far front of sages possible and then let support sat up we specifically referencing taking we the Kings from Bradenton Florida Oh yeah so it was that was that your first to managing you know oh I got started with this little hardcore band from Boston to March of two thousand eight or seven seven eight it was my roommate's hardcore ban and when I was going to school I was running the venue at on campus and so oh my racket was racket I would pay these band like little hardcore bands and punk bands crazy amounts amounts of money because it was a free show but we had a budget so I would shit I would just say like not GonNa say the real racket but like say a ban was used to getting like two hundred bucks a night or one hundred fifty bucks a night I would then pay them like eight hundred bucks a night and I was able to like submit submit these budgets to the school saying like Oh yeah this band needs this much money and then include like food and pizza and all sorts of non alcoholic beverages and yeah it's called the V. Pack it was like a hundred fifty two hundred cap venue on the third floor of the storm building would you pick the band yeah yeah output the shows together and then so would you just do stuff you wanted to see absolutely and like the best show we had there was this band called have heart and they were massive for the hardcore band yeah there were six hundred people in this little room and Emmett school like the so I went to a state school so it was actually state troopers that were our campus police they arrested me so quickly really everything everything about that was a fire code issue like a riot it was like a hardcore band so people were marching and yeah got arrested that night and they were like you can't do dad I was like I didn't know I couldn't there were like how many people are here I was like I don't know I remember 'cause it's free yeah right you're not marking hands I was like no it's free you what what's there to mark so they like I don't know I had to go in front of the school board present my case and everything and then they let me continue doing shows there which was the best part and then they're like you need to number hands or number tickets or something and so I would just have like two hundred number ones and then another hundred number twos so like if they actually went and looked out go like one through one fifty just over and over again I just like as soon as they got to one fifty I'll just start back at one Oh my God so you've like two or three more shows that are held there and then yeah that quickly died out you get arrested again no thankfully not campus police they were they were like we don't really know what to do here so we're just going to arrest you like you're not I don't know if you're in trouble but something here is not you're you're doing something illegal we don't really know what so we're just gonNa make a scene and I was like okay oh yeah in front of everybody that I felt really cool yeah I'm not going to get in trouble for this yeah and then like they took me to their like their campus station and they were like you know I still don't really like they took the cuffs off and I ended up just like talking with a couple of guys until like the dean of students came in like yelled at me for a bit that's fine but yeah so as booking looking shows back then so yeah I was eighteen nineteen so you guys both go kind of begin in the same positions and I just Kinda did you you did plan bans y-you drummed be dumber Dave no not at all so I'm not you you just came from the perspective I like these bands I yeah I think I want to be around music at all times I guess hang out with friends and sell t shirts or something an Brennan did you start booking shows to book your bands show no one would book us so I had to start I called around every cafe and was like can we play there and then we found out the tracks would allow us to play but no one would come to those shows and so then we started adding other bands and I would ask bans through pure volume or MP three dot com we come join us in Connecticut maybe twenty or thirty people had come and then it kind of grew from there and I got sick of playing in my band and so I started started booking all the shows which kind of led me to make career did you ever know of all about records yet and ton yeah that's like those those were like our local shows yeah we used to use all their that rehearsal space for rockets what is that oh he switched so it used to be downtown is I in the town my dad lived in that I lived have been for better part of high school this is like crappy milt broken down Massachusetts mill town turned heroine den yeah yeah there was this show space in downtown called all about records and it was a local record label so they've had like a mini storefront but then in back it was a show space oh yeah just like a proper VFW style everybody's sets up on the floor but that's where I started going to shows one of the first places I want to show is in high school was was at that spot and he's like who shows there too now no school yeah yeah but then and I would that's like becoming friendly with local bands in that part Massachusetts neck beards what's like was like a soda bar and then Dan a venue and then we start putting our shirts like Tim had a screen printing thing in the back and so we'd go there after school every day and that's where prince shirt talk about rackets you just had this incredible scene and racket out all ten yeah he I mean he he she had I mean think about it it's like when he soprano you freaking book the show make the Band's merge take author press photos I mean all all time lows like press for they had for like as they were like blowing blowing up was just a photo that they were in town and timberlake you all off the photographer pictures and he says Tim Kurt Forty would hey may weddings I'm GonNa just say guys like a point I'm going to hire Tim for my wedding naturally diesel photos what was that one and I remember that that was my space yeah I mean he has to take the picture since two doesn't seven but so I mean he took all of our the thing that I you know there's a lot of people that come to shows and that you know this specific portion of our audience that listens to this a lot of them are like probably in that phase that you guys were at or want to even be there of just they maybe don't have musical talent or they're in a band and it's not going anywhere and they you're not alone and they would like to you know to get some some some aretha persistence is key how a H- how did you then get would you say like verse emerged as your I like so somewhat legit Geoghegan in Iraq to the moon.
