Duchene's goal, assist lead Predators to 6-4 win over Devils
"Matt duchene collected two points while the predators were scoring three times in the third period to defeat the devil 6 to four. The last three games we've, you know, we've beaten teams. We haven't hung on or we didn't have to rely on our goaltenders to steal this one. It was, you know, games where we've come out in one games. Duchenne snapped a three three tie in the final period and set up the eventual game winner by Philip forsberg. Cody glass calls Smith Michael green and Tanner, you know, also scored for Nashville, which has won three straight and 5 of 6. UC sorrows made 36 saves and getting the victory. Jack Hughes had a goal and an assist and dougie Hamilton set up three goals in New Jersey's second regulation loss this month. I'm Dave ferry.

"Spoiled us into thinking that that was just a regular thing to expect from him when in reality it was a real herculean effort from him and especially with the volume of games they were playing. I mean, to the point where he finally broke down at the end of the season and got hurt and visit their playoff series against Colorado is already started, I believe, ten of their 13 games this season so far. So there's that and then offensively, I think you're almost understating what an aberration last year it was. Yeah. They never had a 35 goal or 90 point player in franchise history prior to last season. And then Matt duchene scores 43 goals. Philip forsberg scores 42 goals. Roman yossi hits 96 points. And if you look at the shooting percentages of all those players, both on ice shooting percentage and individual, and they were through the roof. I mean, Brian Johansson 22%, ten or 19.4. Duchenne and forsberg both just under 19. And I think maybe the thing I mistakenly gloss over in my expectations and I was like, all right, well, they can just repeat what they did last year was kind of expecting that to happen again because that seems like that was probably the best case scenario for pretty much every one of those players. Yeah. For sure. No. And so like I said, just the idea that, well, you know, they can be around the playoffs again. It's like no, again, they barely made it. And all that stuff went right for them. So the idea that you would add. McDonough and neater writer, again, both players I like. And go, oh, they can maybe even take a step. It's like, no, they can maybe get back to where they were because they added those plans. And obviously, it's not happening happening for them so far. So here's the thing. Even beyond this season, they have $56 million in cap commitments.

"At Oklahoma City, a Oklahoma City team that tends to give them a little bit of trouble. They play the nuggets tough. Do you feel good about the nuggets going into OKC tonight? I do. I feel good about the nuggets. They're a talented team. They just need to, you know, they just need to put, I guess you don't ever put four quarters together in the NBA. This is not football. I understand that. But they just need to have all they need to do, Mike has played with some intense. Also I'm asking you to do is play with intensity for four quarters. You and I have talked about it and one thing that I'd like to see from the nuggets is the same kind of hunger and almost wire to wire approach that we got from the avalanche last year. And one way to see if that team has that kind of mindset, highly approach going out on the road. What kind of mindset do you have playing out on the road? And so far hasn't been good. Nuggets are one and three on the road. So at some point to show to me and I assume to a lot of nugget fans that this is a team that we can really, really take seriously. I think you got to start flexing a little bit on the road. Here's an opportunity against a thunder team that tends to bring their best against it. We'll see that game coming up tonight at 6 o'clock in OKC. Next on the morning brew. And the pitch from Presley is swinging a ground ball to third. Bregman has it. The throw to first and that'll do it. The Astros even up the World Series with a 5 to nothing Wayne and I and four of their pitchers combined to no hit. The Philadelphia Phillies. Think about that. In the history of the World Series, there have now been two, no hitters. Remember through the other one? Yeah, the dude from the Dodgers, right? Don Larsen, Don Larsen, yes. Is he a Dodger or Yankee? Anyway, dude, Don Larsen. But think about that. Was he a Yankee? I looked on Larson. I thought he. Okay. Well, whatever. I know, yes. All right, hold on. Okay, just real quick. Sausage fingers, activate. Pitching for the Yankees against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Okay, okay, okay. Don Larsen. But think about that. You just had history made. But boy, is it a sign of the times? You got a World Series no hit or all right? Right. Four pitches. Four guys, combined for it. This is actually though, this is a really good World Series. It has been a good World Series. I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Too. Did you watch last night? I watched probably about four ratings. Once it got to be 5 zero and they took Javier out. And then it was like, okay, this guy isn't going to be allowed to go for the no hitter because he reached his fish count. Right. So I was like, all right, this game's over. So I went to bed, but yay. No hitter. Yeah. Hooray. Now done for the morning brew, brand that you each and every morning at 6 30. You were listening to schlereth and Evans on ten very sports station, one O four three the fan. Listen, I probably shouldn't make too big a deal of this, but I have to, I'm very, very impressed. That was a major, major flex that you just performed here. So we were talking about Jacob Martin, who's the newest Bronco that they got in a trade with the jets. And we were both like, what kind of player is he? We know he's got a great backstories from Cherokee trail high school and aurora, so it's a homecoming volcano player because you haven't done any jet streams. This is impressive. Marcos, tell you what, let me text Robert sala. Hey, coach of the jets. And within three minutes, he responded back with a full dossier on Jacob Martin. Impressive. Impressive. He's a good dude. Why don't you check in with Kyle? How's Kyle doing right now? I'm fine. You did a Bill Belichick game last year. How's Bill doing? Why don't you check in with Bill Bill is good. I love Bill. Bill is Bill as well. Everything you ask bill in a meeting, by the way. First off, it's all about reminiscing about old times, right? All you got to get is like a super villain. He's like a cartoon super villain that you can get monologuing if you talk to him about himself. How do you expect to take this plan going to work? So if you talk about the old days, man, he'll reminisce. He's not egotistical that way. He loves to reminisce and he loves football. Just loves it. And then once you loosen him up, then you can talk about game plan specific stuff. And he'll tell you stuff, but he always preferences everything. Well, you didn't get this from me, but I didn't say this, but he'll give you a lot of Bill give you great stuff. Bill has got this reputation. It just being a turd. He's not. I really like Belichick. I do. He's such a punk. He just comes off as such a pompous turd, but he's not that way at all in real life. So there's been a lot of, well, instead of Bradley chope, we could have Josh Allen. Yeah, yeah, that's such. By the way, that is such revisionist history. And I heard the little promo about you in D Mac fighting. I can show you I can point to the treat on October 18th when the Broncos beat the Vance Joseph game when he said we're back when the Broncos destroy the Arizona Cardinals and D Mac tweeting, hey, I was a big win for the Broncos, but I still in retrospect still would much rather have drafted Josh Rosen than Bradley. It's there. I know. Yeah. So I went back because you can do that. You could drive yourself crazy by saying, well, we could have had so and so. Right. So I said all right, let's play the game, okay? So I went back and I looked at all four teams, I started with the other three teams. We'll get to the Broncos last, but I started with the other teams. And just looking for, we got this guy, but we could have got this guy. Right. And I just looked for people that they drafted and who went after them within ten or 12 picks that you can say, well, we could have had this guy. Yeah. And be prepared to get sick. That's a ten for sports fan. Who will start? We'll start with the nuggets. In 2011, they drafted Kenneth fareed. They could have had Jimmy Butler. In 2013, they drafted Rudy Gobert and traded him. In 2014, they drafted Doug McDermott and got Gary Harris in a trade that could have had Zach lavine. Now, to their credit, they responded in the second round by picking some guy named jokic, which worked out well, but you get my point. In 2015, they drafted a manual moody a. They could have had Devin Booker who went just a couple of pigs later. Getting sick, 2017, they drafted Donovan Mitchell, but traded him on draft night to Utah and took Tyler Leiden instead. He went to Syracuse, and I tried to tell everybody on draft night, he can't play. So just think. Josh kroenke and Stan Kroenke, you're a basketball. If you hang yourself. If you want to play the what if game with the nuggets, here you go, just in the last decade, you could have had Jimmy Butler Rudy Gobert, Zach lavine, Devin Booker and Donovan Mitchell. Makes me want to pitch. Okay, yeah. Since we're since we're playing, we could have had this guy instead. You ready to get sick? Here are the rockies. Your Colorado Rockies. I went back to 2006 for this one, 'cause I really wanted to start there. In 2006, they took Greg Reynolds with the second overall pick. Evan Longoria went third, Clayton Kershaw went 7th, Max Scherzer went 11th. Wow. 2007, Casey weathers they took number 8 Madison Bumgarner went tenth. You'll love this one. 2008, Christian Friedrich went 25. Guess who in 26? Daniel, Daniel flair. Yes. Thank you. Thank you for putting that in. Thank you. 2009, they took Tyler Matt zik at number 11. Some guy named Mike Trout, maybe you've heard of him, but in 25. What? 2010, Kyle Parker, they took a 26, Noah syndergaard when at 38. 2012, David Dahl, good player. Nice. Winner number ten, Corey Seeger win at 18. So again, the rockies, if you want to play the we could have had this guy, could have had Evan Longoria, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, Madison baumgartner, Mike Trout, Noah syndergaard, Corey Seeger, and Daniel Suarez. Yeah, but they would have ruined them all. A lot of times W tonight it didn't happen. Even the mighty avalanche who have done a lot of great drafting over the last decade had some misses. How about this? In 2009, they took Matt duchene at number three, nazem kadri, when it's 7. How about that one? Well, interesting. But we got ourselves a little taste of Nash. We did. In 2010, Joey hitchin went at number 17, they could have took evgeny because nets off. What was that? Wow, wow. Who's had a great career? That's off. I'll tell you that. As always, he's always skated hard. He skates his cadets off. If I tell you that, great, great player in Washington for a long time. Maybe these cases can not solve. He always is, I mean, that dude, I went and saw him, I went and actually saw him. He became my favorite player. My first year of doing Fox, we had a we had a, we were doing an Arizona game, imagine that. And we went to a hockey game. We went to the arena there in Phoenix. It was right by where we were staying. It's over there by the gun. And it's off. Knuts off, 'cause canute's off or whatever. And it became instantly my favorite player. And then I think Shannon spake was doing our sidelines, and she sent us kunits off. 2014, Connor bleakly. They took a 23, they could have had David postured act at 25 in 2016, they took Tyson jost at number ten, they could have had Charlie mcavoy, great defense. I remember 14. I will tell you this though. The avalanche will always be to me they can do no wrong because they had Soderbergh. As you know, my favorite drafted soda. I don't care. They got Soderbergh on their team. That's right. They started up soda burgers and the rest is history. So it's just kind of a fun, make you a little sick, throw up in your mouth a little bit when you think about what could have been. It wasn't just, hey, we could have had Josh Allen instead of Bradley Chubb. There were a lot of great players that could have worn the Denver uniform. The Colorado uniform, if only I thought you might find that one a little bit interesting for down territory, coming your way next. Hey, it's Mike Evans. "You're looking at 7 years. Before you're legit, and that's because the players you draft are going to take their 18, 1920, most cases before they even get in the league. And then a couple of years past that before they start to really find their stride. That's 5 years. And that's if it works. They've got unrestricted free agents. Dominic kubelet, Calvin de Haan, Marc Andre fleury. They'll get a draft pick for Ryan Carpenter because he's a functional fourth line player. But they got to move them all. Yeah. Looks like Brian Campbell, the old, you know, the retired defenseman and is really tight with Davidson. He's going to be in the front office in a significant role there. They've had lots of time to plan for this. Davidson's has been the interim general manager almost the whole season. And you know the part of their meetings are, okay, if I get, if I get to take over full time, what are we going to do? And the times now. But I think the cane tapes stuff for you for your question. And even Seth Jones, if that's part of the deal, that stuff's more summer than deadline. I think. Yeah. And you have to massage your way through that with no move contracts and all that. Sure. David pyle has come out, general manner of the Nashville predators. And has made it abundantly clear that their focus is on extending Filip forsberg. There's preliminary talks, not a lot of progress made in the dialog with Philip forsberg's agent. When you look at him statistic and again, because he's a pending unrestricted free agent, that's where the speculation comes from. Could he hit the market? If he hits the market, then Nashville is in big trouble, right? Do they make their diamonds? If he hits the market, they're done. Yeah. How do you explain that to ownership? Because for the most part, I mean, they've come back down to earth here in the second half, but they had a good first half of the regular season. Put themselves. Now, how does David poyle explain it? Or how do I explain it? Well, I'm more interested in your explanation because well, because David Boyle's way is going to be different than mine. My way is going to say, the reason we couldn't find forsberg is because we have Matt duchene and Ryan johansen had $8 million a year. Right. And both of them are way overpaid. And we have Roman yossi 9 million. So forsberg has to fit in between those numbers. That's how you would explain it. I'm not sure the general manager that's made those trades and signings is going to explain it the same way. Well, and to your point, you know, and you can always pontificate, but JP Barry CA, all the big hitters in the agent world. They've done their math. They've done their comps on all of these things, right? And if forestburg were go to the where to go to the open market, I think they strongly believe he'd get 9 plus. So is he willing to leave money on the table because Roman UC needs to be the human salary cap on the national predators. We're about what he believes there, right? There's lots of this to it. How does he get along with the coach?.

"One time in college, I was told by a coach that he could have shot the puck harder with his limp dick. And then another car. That's how we had one of our defensemen do this guy came up in the D we are in the offensive zone. And their winger got the puck chipped it off the boards, went right around our D man, skated in on like a two on one and they just scored. And he told one of our D man that the Titanic could have turned quicker than he did. So and we all like, it's a dark, shitty time when this video negative video, you know, session, and everyone just kind of chuckling in the back of the room. And he's like, what the fuck are you guys laughing at? Imagine how long it would take the Titanic to turn around for blue line and chase somebody down. Well, you wonder how messed up we are that we, our brand and our source of income and our livelihoods on foreplay pod is to just live off of showing people the negative film room. Like, my life is now become people just laughing at my expense in athletic feats, right? Like we just put up a 25 minute video of me and my worst. My worst moment on the golf course ever. And it's like, ha ha ha, let's fucking dude. Click on these things and buy it's like, yeah, dude, I love it. I love it. I live for it, but we've had to like, I didn't grow up knowing that that was gonna be like my mental, like I'd have to be so mentally tough that like everything I've ever done wrong on a golf course is gonna be like the reason for our success, like what are you fucking doing? I'm the worst golfer with the biggest platform. It's impossible. Position to be in. So like our lives are just about negative a negative stuff. Yes, we turn it into a positive way. For sure. I love it. We love to laugh at ourselves, but that's like something you gotta kinda like learn to do. You're not born to be like, ha ha ha. I suck. It's not like that's.

"It's kind of funny. We will laugh every now and then like coaches will do video and they'll show you the stuff. And video sessions like a negative video session is like Riggs I'm sure you've been in a few of them. But yeah, you know, you know when it's gonna be bad and it's like the worst thing in the world is seeing is when they click the mouse and thankfully this year we haven't had too many of them but a few last couple of years we had some tough ones and every coach does it and rightfully so I mean I'm sure there's some games or like watching at home and they're like they're sitting in their office and they're taking time away from their family to watch my stupid ass out there blow my defensive coverage or turn the puck over or whatever and they're going this fucking guy makes this much money and he just did that like what the fuck like I'm sure I'm sure they're thinking that, right? So I know they're thinking that right behind the closest orders are probably after periods. What's that? So the worst thing in the world is when that computer clicks on it goes from the screensaver of the video coach is saying up on the big board and the first clip pulls up and you see number 95 there and you're like, oh, I remember this. So who would you just start cringing, right? So the one thing we do so on the flip side, there's sometimes where you watch something and you're like, fuck coach, they're trying to. They're trying to stop me. They're trying to win too. And also, I didn't have you know what's going to happen. You know I should have been here. I didn't know I was supposed to be there because I didn't know what was going to happen. You know the future. You know this guy's going to get open and score. Actually, this year we played the islanders in the first goal of the game, was totally my fault. Totally my fault, like blew my I was back checking. And we started watching the play, stop skating, guy skated right by me and I missed them by like a strategy put it in the open net. And I was like, okay, like, coach talking about it in between the periods. He didn't call me out by name, but he was saying, you know, we got to make sure we finish the back check, you know, that first goal blah, blah. And I'm like, yep, yep, fair enough, like absolutely my fault all day long, but like in my helmet at the time,.

So if you don't have someone, you're either just, you either don't really care or you're hard as a rock between the ears where in a good way, like you're just so mentally strong and some people are blessed that way, but most aren't. Yeah, it's crazy timing. I mean, I've been dealing with this stuff forever, but we talk about we just talked we did a pre show little meeting about what we're doing with foreplay and I have a series coming up fixing Frankie and I think it's going to be so different for people to be able to see that it's not all about the driving range and the putting green and the short range. There's a lot of things that and my hope and my dream for the series is that yes it's going to be funny. Yes, hopefully I'm going to become better tripper and short game player, but maybe someone watching it can take something that they learn from that video, whether it be from a sports psych or someone drill sergeant from West Point. I have all these ideas that I want to do. And maybe they can apply it to their own life, whether it be for work or family, and then golf. It sounds so serious the way you say it, but not many people have access to those types of tips, right? So if we can open up those doors and talk about it. That's why I better help for us. We do those ad reads like, it's amazing. All you need is that door to be open just a little bit. You watch a YouTube video here and there. All I need is just a tip to just get by. That's what I'm always looking for. It's just like tips here and there. How can I make myself better in certain situations? So yeah, it's really interesting and awesome to hear you talk about it so openly and yeah, I've seen firsthand like what you're saying like just a lot of the guys in the league, a lot of guys on tour. It's become just as important as their swing coach. You know, you got to be able to stay mentally strong because you guys are under so much freaking pressure. It's crazy. I put pressure on my teams. Like I'm going crazy watching these games and like you sometimes forget I've been blessed to be able to know these guys now on a personal level so I'm better at it. But when I was 14, 15 years old, I would have fucking given them the double bird and been like, how do you not? How do you not score on that open that one time or you were wide open and then I was taught at a younger, around like 15 or 16 by the guy Bernie cassell he was the islanders, skills coach. He had like the best hands I've ever seen in my entire life. He was huge for me growing up and watching hockey, but he taught me that there's two teams on the ice, Frank. It's always just like a Twitter post about like, you know, thank you Colorado for the time there and to hear the bleed burgundy and blue and now you're gonna be that Joe sakic for a kid in Nashville, right? It's like a new age of fandom that's now that they're gonna look for a superstar player to latch on to, you know, that could be you and it probably is you and that's such a cool thing to be able to carry out for the rest of the rest of your career and such a cool look into it and it's just like, you know, that's awesome man. That's a really great, really great story. Yeah, I mean, there's times in my career early on. I probably I came off probably as too intense or too kind of into what I was doing personally to my teammates. I know for a fact I did. And it was just because I had all this kind of pressure that I was putting on myself and I've learned how to balance that now for sure a lot better. You get a little bit older. You deal with some stuff of how you were brought up and how you look at different things and for better and worse and you improve as just you become more well rounded person. When I came into the league, hockey was all I knew. I had no my first sip of beer, I was 19 years old, and it was all about hockey. And now, I mean, I love to have a good time and get after it and my dad's at my found out my dad is the exact same way later on early in my career and that was pretty funny, but you know, early on. I mean, I was brought up pretty straight now and household. Hockey was all there was and it took me a minute because I came in at 18. But like, do you ever really hear anything anybody says? Only what your point when you were saying like if it's quiet and some random guy yells something like that would, especially in a golf swing, because every moment of that golf swing, I mean, you're talking to yourself in your head, right? You're going through what you're doing, yeah. Yeah, and if you get this far off, you know, you're missing by a hundred yards. You know it is. An inches is many, many arts in golf. So I think it would be the same if it was like, you know, here a pin drop and then. All of a sudden somebody else on, I think it'd be the same, but when everyone's loud, like, I feel like the golfers would probably like that too. Like if everyone's screaming and yelling, it's just like steady noise, but if it's like quiet and then someone just screams something you'd hear it. But I mean, I love loud arenas. I mean, a few years ago when I was in Columbus, we went on that run when we swept Tampa in the first round, I've never heard arena of louder than that game three and four at home in Columbus when they have a sneaky sneaky good crowd. If you want to go see a good game, a good crowd, like Columbus's crowd in the playoffs, it's unbelievable. And when we won that series.

"My beer glass round? What shapes puck around? Okay. Why would you use would you ever catch it like this? Heel curve. I was kind of like, okay, so now I see, I watch guys, I have a couple teammates, I always give shit to you. They're great players too. But the Paco roll on them every now and then or they'll go to zippa pass and they got that old jury curve. You remember that one looks like a 6 iron. And they'll go to zip a pocket and it sails. And it's like, hey, I'll always say, hey, it's the heel curve. It's the yogurt. We'll give it to them. Maybe the toe curve. You're able to sling it more. He talks about like a shortstop, like throwing the ball to first. He catches it. He's his hands like this and you throw it off your back foot. So it's amazing. He studies all the different parts of the game and human body. Talks about the fingers. How you always, some guys will hold their stick like really weird like some guys will hold it at the butt ends like here's some like here like I hold it right here and he says that's the right way to hold it because these fingers and your hand here that's where you get all your strength from. If you think about when you're swinging a golf club, it's kind of the same thing, right? Like you use the top, but your top hand, the butt end is usually right about there. I would think. That's how I grew up in any way, but if you were to cut off these fingers, you'd be useless with these two versus like a strength. You know what I mean? So like stuff like that, I don't know what you're gonna get into the otzi talk. I could talk about him all day because he's been such a good mentor for me, but yeah, you guys, you guys should get him on. You guys should get him on. He'd be so good for the hockey and the golf part of everything because he's dialed into both. Last and longer boys, that's the secret..

"The closer at 45, the better. And then your angle from here should be the same. So if you look at said gotcha. So since one legged squats or anything he's doing, you get so low and it's because his ankles are can dorsiflex, so basically like you bring your knee this way. Or if you were to take your big toe and point it towards your knee. That's like dorsiflexion. Plantar flexion is like your straightening. My foot almost just didn't even move. So, Sid, Sid's unbelievable out of. He's like the original young guy. I came into the league at 18. That was like just like in better shape and just moved better than everyone else. And he's just paved the way for everyone coming after. I was like four or 5 years after him coming in, but it was amazing just to see the transformation in the league just guys working on different stuff. And I mean, yeah, I mean, he's the poster child for like perfect posture on the ice out there and he's so strong and he's just in a better position everybody else and I honestly like, especially earlier in his career, he watched some of how dynamic he was early on compared to everybody else. It's just amazing and that's what it comes from. So not to get it too hockey, nerdy and text on you guys. But I love hearing about your game too. I remember one of the first podcasts I listened to. You were talking about catching a puck on your backhand like full speed coming through the middle of the ice and I was laughing about that. I was like, oh, if I ever meet him, I'll have to have to have to tell him a little couple of tricks. Dude, so for me, the thing I struggle with is when I play golf and I don't play golf very well, but at least I know some of the fundamentals to work on. Like I know if I want to hit a draw how to take the club back and I know like certain things that you have to do. In hockey, I was telling Riggs, I just didn't grow up playing. I grew up watching a ton. So I can find myself in the right areas, but I'll never know, I was even asking the most simple question. Actually, how do you stick handle? Do you have the toe up? Do you do it on the heel? Like, what are the actual things that I have to think about? And the thing I would wonder with you is like, how often are you thinking about the fundamentals when you're playing it in NHL game? Are you actively thinking about your angle? Or is it just second nature where you're just like, you know what to do at this point?.

You know, our camera guys are refocused on him. He's kind of the star of the show. We're just here all the time. People were sick of us. We're kind of lame just the same all the time, and he's gonna be like the new, funny, professional athlete guy with his whole fucking thing and his mustache and his hair and we're bringing some brushes. We're in mustache. We are canceling out the mustache. That is not looking too. How do you use this man? It's so thick and then I'm gonna shave mine into a mustache here in a few hours when the rest of the boys get here. Are you gonna do handlebar mustache or are you gonna go straight mustache? I don't know. I'm not like. How far you need to I think you cut it like right here and I think you do the fucking whole entire big mustache. So I leave these parts just a little yeah, I'd say you leave like an inch right there. So badass. I mean, we'll definitely see what it looks like. I think that's the answer dude. And then try to do handlebar mustache. That's gonna make you look like manly. You're trying to farm up in Iowa fucking run in the show dude. Harley-Davidson. Who the hell that man? All right. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do it later. I'm actually excited about it. That's gonna be, that's just gonna be a whole new thing for me. Yeah, it's gonna be a new trend. I'm excited. "New. Everything's fresh. Yeah. So I think what Bruce has been able to do is just take the heat off a little bit and say, yeah, this is what we're going to play like. And this is how we're going to play and just go play. Yeah. And there's a couple of things. They've had some in the four games. They've had some good schedule breaks. They've gotten teams on back to back nights. They've been fresh. They've been at home. Their energized. Oh yeah, and their goalie is to stop in the pock again at 95%. Right. I'm not throwing cold water on at all. I'm just trying to be realistic. If Thatcher demko stops a pocket 95% for the rest of the year, they're going to win a hell of a lot of games. The weaknesses are still there and Jim Rutherford has addressed them in his press conference. They need to be faster by his note. He wants to be more aggressive. He sees the holes in the team. I think everybody can see the holes in the team, but you can't fix them all in a week. No. No. And so they'll be ups and downs and, but, you know, I live in Vancouver. It's nice, not to step on a pile of crap all the time. Every time the team walks around, it's nice to watch a team and go, ah, even if they lose, you go, no, that was good. Yeah. Because it's been so negative for so long. It's just it's been miserable for any can not hockey fan. And now they get a breath of fresh air. Give us an assessment of the two Alberta teams. You know, we're poised to do the Maple Leafs in the Edmonton liners tonight being Tuesday night as we record this. The floundering right now, they've lost 5 in a row. So take us through what your thoughts are on why things aren't going their way. And not that we need to get into the COVID conversation again, but that's where the Calgary flames are, but aside from that, you know, what do you see in Calgary? Okay, so start an Edmonton. How many games do you think Mike Smith has played this year? Yeah, not many. Like, did you have a guess? Yeah. Who would have 26? So they've been playing with their second and third goalie for 24 of 26 games. When Miko koskinen one 11 games early, he had the highest goal support of any goalie in the league. Yeah. Right now he's in a 9 O 5 save percentage, I think, and three 5 goals against average as I'm doing research for the game here on Tuesday. How are you going to win with that? Yeah. You can't. And so eventually, it leaks out into everything else. They lost Cody CC. They lost Duncan Keith. Well, there's their second pair. Yeah, right? Gone. Then you get up front. Their power play was running at 50%. Well, that's not going to happen. No. All the time. And so as it's tumbles back to earth, they start losing the special team battle more and more and more. Their bottom 6 forwards haven't scored forever. Well, part of the issue with that is they're number three center who was hoping to be Derek Ryan. It's just not worked. He's not been a real disappointment. So now you have a cloud playing in the middle of their third line. He doesn't have an assist yet. Well, how do you think his wingers are doing? Yeah. I'm very good. So there's your Euler story. I think if you would have started the year and said they're going to be 16 and ten, you would have said pretty good. Pretty good. It's Larry David would say, pretty pretty pretty good. However, now there's stumbling around and you're like, man, look at the panic has set in. They're a flawed team that needs their goalie back. And if he can't come back, they're screwed. As for Calgary, remember when Mark strom had a 48 save shadow? Well, he's got 5 shutouts. The coaches know the teams know that's not always going to happen. And he was scoring goals literally every game, not going to happen. Yeah. They've won four out of 12 games on whole mice. So they're your issues right there for Calgary. But I think in the long picture, you look at them and you go, they're both in, they both have a good record for this time of the year. There's going to get hot again and then they're going to get cold again. He'll Colorado was losing games all over the place when they were injured. Now they're winning because they score literally 7 goals a game. Yeah. That's not going to happen. That's not going to continue to happen. No. So I think that's where the Alberta teams. They've hit the ditch. Yeah. All right, well you mentioned Colorado Pittsburgh is a good story among our American Friends. But why don't we wrap up headlines with Nashville? Did you see this team challenging? Potentially challenging for the central division at the start of the year. I mean, they've won, you know? No chance. You know, at four for a lot of reasons, you know, I wondered how UC sorrows was going to take the number one job and just do it all the time. How could he do that? He's been fantastic. Matthias at home and Philip forsberg during the last year, other contracts. You know, so that can either go good or bad. Well, at home, they got signed early. Forsberg was hurt, came back and scored four goals and I think his second game back, like you're like, no, no, I'm not too shame. It's found his game again. Pretty good. So now you've added some offense to a team that's always been able to skate. Duchenne's probably been as big a key for them as any. Without him, they become pretty thin, but I didn't, I didn't see this. I mean, they traded Ryan Ellis. Could that be a good thing? Yeah, here they are and they're in a really good position. I would say John Heinz is a very underrated coach. Not just because they won 5 games here. Yeah, he's a progressive guy. He wants his teams to play a real offensive style. Of course, you're going to have the guys to do it. But I've been impressed with Nashville, man. You know, you've said that so many times before it's the old adage, right? The player wants more ice. He goes to the coach. The coach says, well, you want more ice play better. Player says, well, play me with better players. Back and forth, they go and I feel like there's finally been this compromise and a relationship that's been developed between Matt duchene and John Heinz, where the player is playing better and that allows John Heinz to play him more. Well, they spoke in the summer and Heinz and Duchenne apparently had a pretty honest not always chipper conversation. And Duchenne told him what was bugging him and Heinz told him what was bugging him and I always go back to when John tortorella and Vinny le cavallier were going to strangle each other and Jay feaster called them both in the office and said, I'm not tradeing you and I'm not firing you. Figure it out. Meetings. And they won the Stanley Cup because they figured it out. you're trying to get comfortable do you guys feel like you're comfortable are getting comfortable with those systems of those little changes make a half you have buffalo game was a great example we're we within the system and just once we've made we we can execute it great and and it was that was a confidence boost I felt for our team and and knowing that and the belief and and our team game that could be successful so males unfortunate tonight but will will work to get right back out the how tough is it when you said at the beginning of trying not to think about things too much kind of what how this brought up you you've gone through a coaching change you've made some adjustments with the new system how tough is it I mean you're you're a hockey player he wanted to go out there and do your thing but you also are doing things differently how tough is it gonna keep the thinking part out of it yeah he you know when you have a week off like that you wanna when the puck drops you want to be great expect to be great your you know you just sent a long break in recovered a little bit of and so you want to go there and do great things and and you know sometimes you you over things that one the punks artistic inner trying to do a little too much and can get away from it that's all but no excuses like you said that they they set up the league where they had the same break same time and and we need to find a way to be better I talked to Matt Duchene after the second period and he was clearly frustrated you guys were clearly frustrated that's another thing how tough is it to keep frustration you guys know it's this is gonna have to put your foot on the gas the rest of the way and your block to close out the fourth month of the season yeah how tough is it to keep frustration out of a room that we all know how hard it is to win in this league and ups and downs and if you let that get to you get frustrated that's one you know things don't go anywhere now we gonna just handle handle the moments and and you know stay poses a group and and confident in and go better business every day you can't you can't back it as last eight minutes again you're all over did you take something out of that Gerry Ford yeah that's you know use your heart game when we played fearless and the last eight minutes of it felt like we were unstoppable yeah and you know that's that that's what can be a frustrating thing where you just gotta understand that we can play like that if we can get to the non stop we're gonna win a lot of hockey and so it also it's also it's a good thing you know we had that great push but it's also frustrating we need that we need that right from the start sure anything fun during the break those are it all seriousness how everybody thinks it's your body but a lot of it's mental to write sometimes it's nice to get that mental break yeah yeah totally so you know it's nice to just pick your feet up for a few days and had not be traveling all over the country and then Donald and like we are so you know definitely beneficial for not just for us but the holy we travel in the next two games to close out the month of January best of luck in Washington New Jersey thanks for this thing I got a everybody we appreciate him coming up will come back and we'll get to the highlights you heard the first free will pick it up from there on the other side here
