Interview: Alex Bowman
"Once again. Alex bowman welcome back to the program. Yeah thanks for having me all right over your shoulder here. It smelling pretty good. It's it's looking pretty good You got in and out burger there for lunch yet. Not for me for the guys. Yeah my my trainer would kill me. he doesn't know that i had a double double animal style fries and a chocolate shake yesterday when i landed. So we're just not going to tell them that but but today since odds are he's going to walk in here Not gonna eat that. Well you know this is broadcast and online and so he might find out some other way. Yeah we'll just we'll just send it and hope hope he doesn't all right. I noticed that they tony. You had like an all white fire suit. How do you keep that thing clean. You don't yeah that was That's tough valvoline. paint scheme. looks so good firesuits. Look really good I think all white looks really good. It's just so hard to keep playing I think they have a couple of primaries this year so only got to make them last a couple of races but It is tough there destroyed after one race They wanted me to do that for chili bowl. And i said no way Cj who drives my car he he got an all white suit for chile will and it was destroyed after after practice. Pretty much so It is as tough for sure. The first thing. I thought of as that would not work in the days of thunder days. No for sure stuff used to get the pair used to move through the cars. So much more i mean. The cars were cooler inside because of it. Actually but i mean those guys would get so dirty back in the day. I just because there was so much more moving air and everything was sealed up how it is now. But now they're like They're sealed up pretty tight. Except for when i went through the grass i had grass everywhere so That firesuits probably half green at this point. But that's all right. Put mountain dew on that part of it. Yeah yeah if if they wanted to be on eighty eight car for sure. We're halfway there. You did a panting of matt benedetto. I saw it online. You can't get away from it but props to him. He kept the interview going yeah. He's not a very shy human being so it's one of those things we mess with each other. A lot and i did not continue the interview. I was very distracted by it. What happened and what was going on. So that was my way of getting him back so i'm really not looking forward to what comes next knowing him but i'm sure it'll be something i was gonna ask you. Expect retaliation probably It's fun to make fun of matt. you know. He drives for that other manufacturer. But he's still just went and bought a another corvette so We know he's at least got good taste and yeah he's he he just bought another is the are one. But you know. I saw the other day. And you know how corvettes have four taillights he. He had somebody take the tail lights out to like put tent on them. And like put different spoiler on the car. And they didn't tighten the bolts out one of the bolts up and one of the tail lights fell out going down the road. So that's embarrassment. He's got good taste in cars but yeah it's a little bit nursing. What what are you driving personally. No one of those. Yeah so he's actually copying me. He's got the same cars me now. He's he was going to buy the same wheels that i had on my car so i just sold him my wheels about something different. So we weren't matching but yeah you should go ask him about it because it's literally he's copying me. That's that's definitely interesting. Go out there and race. Yeah mine still going to be mine. Still gonna be faster though. So i mean it's obviously got the better driver so it's all driver of course nothing under the hood for sure now. Last time we spoke you were still working out the intricacies of assigned seating at movie theaters. Is there anything else technology wiser in two thousand twenty. That's baffling you I don't think there's been anything yet. I'm sure. I'm sure there will be that movie. Theater incident was largely embarrassing. Pretty sure i'm never going on a date ever again. After that that was that was a struggle But yeah nothing yet. I feel like something will definitely pop up and confuse the heck out of me and all embarrassed myself with it but nothing yet. Truth be told seventeen years. I've been doing this. This is the first time using my phone for notes. I used to use paper mainly because it was lighter. So i'm still getting into the tech stuff too. Yeah yeah there you go. I mean yeah. It's forever changing. Who would think that you have assigned seats at a movie theater. That there's twelve people and it just didn't make any sense. If i were just gone gone up one more row. Adam and just fine definitely definitely definitely all right so you got a bunch of sponsorships onboard this year. How do you keep track of them. All highest kelsey. What's on the car this week Yeah figure out what shirts to bring. And and i mean it's it's written on my chest on the firesuits so i guess i could just look down and figure it out but no it's it's been really cool to have some new partners on board obviously We have this week and chevy goods dot com and everybody. That's going to be out for the rest of the year. Really excited about all that so It'll be neat. I think the black and gold car looks really cool so looking forward to seeing that on the race track. Lamar looks good to its new paint scheme for them so it only looks a little bit similar to the valvoline paint scheme. Just a little bit. But but that's all right. That's that's that's a good luck to you once you're inside it kind of looks the same right. Yeah yeah you can't see it from From where i sit. So i'm here for it. Do you ever bring the wrong stuff to the track. Not recently so when i was driving for junior motorsports We had a couple of different sponsors on the car throughout the year. We went somewhere in. Dave ellen's was the crew chief and really all the sponsors were the same color scheme but he wore the wrong shirt like the race day shirt. He warned completely wrong. One week kelsey did my pr over there. as well. and i thought she was gonna kill him so It was it was a good day for sure with sports. Exploding ni- racing and that's something that you're interested in and doing. Yeah william started his own team starts. I started calling him. Mr be since he's got this big time. I racing team but I wanna talk to him next time. I'm gonna ask him well. How does that work. I mean nothing physical yeah he. He's spent some money on it so I don't know. That's i keep myself really busy with other things and i'm kinda maxed out at the moment. I think it's really neat. I play on. Ira seeing a little bit more to to play around and then taking that super seriously. Is it something you see yourself doing. After nascar maybe retiring you're eighty years old. You're sitting in your living room and you're still raising all that's gonna be so different when i'm eighty years old. Can you imagine what sim racing is going to become at that point Maybe i don't know all probably be at a dirt track somewhere though

"You you have fun with that, and here he is, and we've got a handful laughed and he's at that that eight win mark. There's no doubt about four performance was put a lot of effort and a lot of time a lot of money into developing this young man he's a huge talent and I just can't imagine him not getting his craft at this point speaking of a huge talent and a fan favorite I know that Matt Benedetto fans were rejoicing when the word came out that he was staying in the twenty one with an exit strategy and twenty, twenty two that would make it. Possible for Austin Syndrich to drive that race car, I know met Benedetto fans were on the edge of their seats, the edge and ledges of other places. It seems like they've been reined in and talk back in from those ledges and edges. At least for the next twelve months. Yes and and you know I a lot of that decision or at least some of it I think had to do with the fact that that you just don't wait until the middle of October to tell a guy that he said it's the breadline that he's going to be unemployed and I think team penske was cognizant of bath wood brothers Racing Wisconsin isn't Bat Your Ford performance was cognizant of that. There's a right way to do these kinds of things. It is a business after all there's a right way to do it and there's a not so right way to do it and cutting a guy a wildly popular guy like Matt Di Benedetto loose when there's virtually nothing else out there for at this eleventh hour, it's a tough way to do business and I think. What they decided to do to keep him for another year with a really nice compromise I..

"Pulling on the inside. And it's good. Benedetto that will throw the block know Joey Logano has got the lead. The question is, Can he keep it? A gap of about two car lengths between himself Matt Benedetto here comes today. Selling on the charge to the bottom of the race. Three wide is Joey Logano gets caught in the middle. They storm back to the tri alone. They're crashing. Kyle Busch, Joey Logano in the crash, Tyler Reddick. Kevin Harvick gets a big piece of it. They did not take the white flag. We will have another green white checker. The leader did not get to the line as we crash and spin for a record setting Talladega 12th time here today. Kyle Busch still sliding that car just completely torn up. You know, Kyle Busch wants to just take it back. Put it on a transporter. And head to the roll. Kevin Harvick. Remember how he hung out backside all day long? Yeah, that cars used up as well under the caution flag 12th time, like Alex said. That is a record for Talladega. Kyle Busch once and for all up and out of that, Toyota, I am sure he is ready to Part company with Alabama, at least until 2021. It has been a long day. He is going to be in a difficult position when we go on to the rubble, but he's not alone. Alex again so many drivers. The playoff drivers have just had a terrible day, and we can add Kevin Harvick's name now to that list. You absolutely can. So how do the playoff shake out right now was still one race to go in this round of 12. Well. Currently in in the eighth spot is Alex Bowman by 18 points over Kyle Busch, Kyle Busch currently night and the first driver out of the playoff cut line. Then you've got Clint Boyer 41 points out. Austin Dillon 41 out and Eric Alma role of 53 out. That's how it stands Right now at the look at the playoffs, taking a look at the monitor look like Tyler Reddick into the back of Kyle Busch. Jacked up. The Toyota turned him down into Joey Logano. They came back up. The racetrack tagged a number of other cars. And that is what put us under caution. Flag number 12 Tyler trying to race to the front and Kyle right there, and he just got into the back of the 18 of Tyler, or of Kyle Busch and got him turned around. Others involved in this number is going to grow true Ex got a piece of that Harvick was involved. Logano was involved in a course Kyle. And Tyler Radic. They brought the field to a stop. Red flag is out. Over time continues at Talladega. Seven point reinforced nylon harness. Check carbon fiber Head and neck restraint. Check thermo plastic nylon window wedding. Check. NASCAR.

"Tight. We're gonna give him a slight air pressure adjustment is well and he heads back out 14.6 seconds stop for Chase Elliott as they worked their way down the pit lane. Denny Hamlin is going to come out first. Martin corrects Junior's team got a great pit stop. He's up three to the second spot. Alex Bowman. Third, dropping two spots back to fourth. Chase Elliott losing one. Ryan Blaney, then it's Clint Boyer, Matt Benedetto, Austin Dillon, Kyle Busch Up five spots tonight, William Byron 10th off the pit lane, and it appears that throughout today, and we've not had that many opportunities for the field in line back up because this is just the fourth yellow Chase away. Each team struggled a little bit. They've gotten beaten consistently, and he's had to go back on the track and make up those spots, and he's used the choose rule a couple of times. IMEs dug where he went to that outside Lane actually gave up a spot or two to get up to that outside land on the restarts. We'll have to see how they do it again this time 75 laps to go here in the South 750.400. Today. Tastes like a sunny day like firing up the senses. Pulling them down with a nice cold coat Today. Tastes like a well oiled like it smells so good. You can't help yourself not ready like hands. Today. Tastes like a Sunday which I never tasted this good. CocaCola together taste better. Jimmie Johnson is the beneficiary or the lucky dog, if you chief so he is back on the lead lap from Vegas. This is PR in the performance racing network. So I'm apartment hunting and having this debate with a landlord. Like I said, no pets just can't rent you the unit. Yeah, He's a dog. But, sir, he's not a pet. He's four legged. He's Harry. He's on a leash. That's a pen. No, Henry is an assistance animal. Look, I'm legally blind. Couldn't you make a reasonable accommodation for my guide? Dog? Young lady? You can call your canine friend. Anything you want. Those are the rules. Rules rules that allow for housing discrimination. So I made a call to HUD to confirm that indeed, landlords must make reasonable accommodations for assistance animals and now we're so happy in our new apartment. If you think you've been discriminated.

"Fire on top of the racetrack, Tivoli. The outside line starts to kick in. And indeed William Byron will go back to the top spot. The lead pack will flash by that. J. J. Daley lab car. It's firing by a Carling. But here comes Harvey carve it with a great run down on the inside with a pair of Ford's teaming up with Koslowski Is there William Byron on the outside his teammate Alex Bowman, right behind them from our vic on the bottom side of the race track has the advantage and all kinds of drafting help stacked up there. Kevin Harvick will go from the bottom to the top, try to block both lanes. He's not going to be all that successful outside Lane is a common, you know, they come to the outside lane, led by William Byron, Alex Bowman, Denny Hamlin and company to the outside Lane. It's Byron by about a half a car length, but Kevin Harvick digging hard come back straightaway seesaw battle for the lead exits turned to and for now, William Byron. Has the upper hand. He'll lead by a car length now Alex Bowman will come along with him. But here comes the inside line again. Another great rundown of the inside for Harvick. Alex Bowman tries to go down gets a little bit of a draft off of Brad Kozlowski as they strained by J. J. J. Lee Harvey. What Byron making a run on the outside. That's a 22 year old driver out of Charlotte, North Carolina, trying to lead the lap. He's gonna do it if it comes across the line. William Byron. Now to the point, But Harvick is right there still side by side wheel to wheel backto 12 by two all the way back through the top 2025 positions William Byron, still trailing sparks out of the rear end of that machine. He is far from the only one side by side with Kevin Harvick. Everybody double wide, a couple of exceptions of three wide racing one of those Matt Benedetto Finds himself in the middle of three wide, mid pack a front still side by side believe once again another great run in the turn Number three for Kevin Harvick will put his nose back out with that for the outside the Chevrolet of William Byron. Alex Bowman right behind them trying to get back to the flock. William Byron. Not all that surprising. Having agood run at Daytona. He did win his Blue Green Vacations duel in Daytona a year ago, so he's got some experience and knows how to lead in this type of racing. He's got experience, and he's got a teammate on his back bumper in the person of Alex Bowman Bowman giving him all the drafting help he needs.

"Stuff wrecks. Our crew is working on the left side of his car. They dropped him and send him back out. Brad Kozlowski has re inherited the lead. Now, as he again is one of the top cars. It's going long during this green flag run watching now. Also mad Benedetto is headed down pit road, Brad Gillie. Yes, Matt Benedetto has been pretty happy with this car all afternoon long. He started out just a little bit free. Parents are on track bar adjustment for him. Pick up one almost got away. They're in the left side. This is great stuff so far for them. The car pulls out 13.3. So at this point, Brad Kozlowski stays out really come on to pit road answer is no, he remains. On the gas pedal hard down the front stretch as he crosses the stripe still has to make a pit stop, but he has 44 laps to go Right now it is last. Clint Boyer, Cold Custard, Ty Dillon and William Byron Long. Christopher Bell, Kevin Harvey. That tells him none of those cars have made pit stops. Yet again. Most of those guys have struggled all day. His lost again used this strategy of being the last car among the top runners toe pit under green, Teo get the track position, and now it looks like he is going to be hard on the brakes as lofty will give up the lead come to the pit lane. As we go down to Brad Gillie business problem for press. His last was basically landing too hard on Corrie and four He's gonna bring his car into the attention of the Jeremy Nolan's lead through here in the.

"Delivered to your device each every week and while you're there leave us a five star rating it really helps it does it does help so news of the week. You just heard from these guys. Paul Menard Matt Benedetto basically Paul is GonNa play the home version of NASCAR racing facing and Matt's going to slide into the ride the twenty one wood brothers car which is backed by penske racing massive huge. Mondo Opportunity Eighty definitely definitely definitely so. This is kind of big really big. It's it's. A It's been a few ways obviously a huge career move for Matt Benedetto a solid team solid backing and he hasn't really had that I mean yes. He's he's with a okay team this this year but nothing with you know the credentials of penske racing behind them here. Here's my thought you've got what ten races left now. So you've got two teams here they are not in the playoffs and they are looking toward two thousand twenty. I know Paul menards wanting to close things out but is there any cabinet h there for wood brothers racing they try to strike a deal with Levi on family racing to let to let Matt Benedito get a few races and that twenty-one car just to kind of get things going for next season and at the same token token that would give L. Afar the chance to to get maybe Christopher Bell who is obviously going to be the driver of that car or whoever the driver is going to be if it's not see bell a little bit of time as well to get them kind of prepared for the twenty twenty season. I have see bell on Friday. You think he's going to tell me you know he's been pretty tight lipped on everything everything. I really tell you anything. I sat there with everyone hounding him right. When the thing came out and he he didn't budge? He didn't plan she said I don't know where I'm going to be. I don't have anything signed and nanny birds lie so I doubt that's even actually true. I'm sure things have been signed in for quite a bit. They've kind of talked about what's actually going to happen and I'm sure he probably already knows regardless if he's going to say if he does or not but he seems to be playing pretty close the vast and he's also agent as well so that might actually the most impressive thing about this. A guy who doesn't have an agent is able to keep his mouth shut this long about where he's going to be in what he's going to be doing. You'd think he'd be excited about it and tell somebody well. I mean yeah but at the same time if you know that you're set and you tell somebody you might not be set that so strategies to keep mouth shut and do your thing so what brothers going for their one hundredth win. Whether Paul does it this year or you know Matt. Maybe have has an opportunity next year. Yeah that would be huge for whoever accomplishes that that is a major milestone for that race organization who had so many legends in that car over the years this this is huge in the hundred is sitting out there dangling from everyone's take it and I would imagine Paul Menard over the last few races of the season. He's got to race top ten industry now going into this week in Las Vegas. I got a feeling he's going to be laying things out there trying to give it his all just hoping to go out with a win to two Komo company that what two thousand eleven brickyard four hundred that he had so. I expect Paul Menard to try to pull out all stops or do some crazy weird strategy things to try ready to win a little word of of advice for the wood brothers. Give Matt a chance. Give him a couple of years. Poor guy gets a year here year. They're all over the place given some time to settle in yeah well. This deal is a year currently but I mean obviously they passed that. If things go well I think a lot of that has has to do with the Minardi sponsorship. That's in there is set for next season. It was supposed to be for Menard but menards leaving early to retire so menards is going to continue to uphold their contract for another season which is pretty awesome and that was demanded at a shot definitely definitely hey the Nascar Cup series playoffs begins this weekend. If you haven't heard Las Vegas Motor Order speedway is the site out there in the desert super hot is going to be the weather and but before that in the city the top sixteen did some burnouts ads Las Vegas Boulevard. You check these out. It's it's awesome every single year laying down some rubber right in front of the police. Don't worry too much about that because they're kind of in on it. They're kind. Have you know blocking stuff off and make sure it's safe for everybody so it's there in on the fun essentially all the action was on Thursday but I'm sure I you know based on what I know about the Internet. It's probably some videos might be floating around by now. Oh yeah definitely there's there's no stopping at these days. Anything happens. You'RE GONNA find it definitely now over there at Toby Christie Dot Com. You've got some headlines going on there as well yeah. I mean there's tons and tons and tons of NASCAR news. The rotating news cycle that is the NASCAR world continues on. You're not going to tell us about anything. What about the TV ratings. Were they up down. What well we don't really know? That is the the brickyard. Four hundred was a week that we're not used to having race on this particular weekend which is NFL opening. Weekend is usually a Saturday night race at Richmond so this. We don't really know where we stack up. had a one point nine rating which saw okay not super what you're expecting for a crown jewel race. Johny non-cable channel so that's a bummer but again it was up against NFL on their opening weekend so you would expect not the best ratings in that scenario that being said again. We don't know where we stack up unfortunately Gotcha Gotcha. How about this A. J. G. L. R. J. J. L. motorsports in the truck series the team. That's been running part time for last few seasons but Jesse Little Chad little son as the driver They're actually selling off their assets. They'll be closing by seasons in Jesse. Little is left left looking for opportunities next season in the cup or extended series but no no relief just yet you got the Christopher Bell stuff that we talked about in their Elliott Sadler is going. It'd be driving this weekend. Yeah this'll be his final. NASCAR race of all time supposedly we'll see if that sticks but he will be running a old paint scheme from his late model days it looks really cool he's driving for colleague racing and their number ten car and he has a shot to win this thing that car and that team have been very competitive this the season with guys like Ross chastain. Ag Al-Medina and others so you'll have a pretty good shot of the possible win and this'll be a fun way for it to go now and finally this is kind of big g. m. s. what's going on there. Well Gee mess racing in the xfinity series they. They're you know they've got the car fielded for rookie contender John Hundred Newman check looks like they're looking at you know pulling out of the expanding series for next season unless they can get a driver who comes fully funded with a sponsor and and a lot of the reason may be because they're in the the deal there to sponsor the new the new raiders stadium out there in in Vegas so a lot of funds. They're being allocated towards that which means they can't fund the this affinity sears program out of their own pocket and more so allegiant airlines and the Gallagher family will be looking to shutdown the XFINITY series program. It seems wow that's pretty big right there. It is and one last thing before we go an extended series as well. No Gregson should be back with junior motorsports for a second season. There was some possible rumors that maybe things weren't set for him but it looks like they've got enough sponsorship and stuff to be the number nine Carnegie next season all right well. That's good to hear to Las Vegas Motor speedway this weekend. There's always a competition of speed between the cars on the track and the jets jets flying in the air from Nellis Air Force Base across the street. It's always as always trying to do an interview in that environment but if you're a fan you gotta check. Check out the neon garage. If you get out to the track it's amazing. It's a great fan experience. You get you know walk around the whole garage area. They got windows between everything but yeah you could. You could see everything it's it's. It's pretty awesome this weekend if you're wondering why and every one of the Keri Murphy interviews from this week it'll be in the background and like I try to talk shot off hot temperatures so eminent September in Vegas. It's it's you know what are you. GonNa expect. It's race number twenty seven of thirty six race number one of the NASCAR Cup series playoffs and they believe last race for xfinity race expanding series to get into the playoffs. Is that insult their cutoff race all right what about trucks trucks are hardy and they've been in for this. I cut off race for the tricks so this is not confusing thing at all. No definitely not toby's got the track stats because he he knows how much I love those yeah. You're a huge fan of stats in general so let's go ahead and go with this. One point five mile track banging turns one and two and three and four equal at twenty degrees each Fritsch backstretch banked at nine degrees as well affront stretch link twenty two seventy five feet backstretch fifteen seventy two so not equidistant frowny face on race linked two hundred sixty seven laps four hundred hundred and a half miles of course always have that half-mile carry hit us up with them stage links we got eighty eighty and whatever's left he they didn't do the math to sixty seven or something right well. That's the sixty seven games so yeah so one hundred and seven laps. APPS sure whatever I don't you more on this. Come on I did all the stats and stuff like a calculator. Something man come on on. That's more work than I would care to take on one of those seven. It should be okay earlier this year. The winter was joy Lugano. Although Oh you know that was a completely different ballgame I mean with the new package. The cars are completely different. Now Yeah if you remember correctly. This was the first race with the the actual rules package where they had the Arrow ducks instead of the brake ducts so right. I was interviewing drivers and you could see the fear in there. Is They really that fearful. o- they look terrified. Okay just yeah so in case. You're wondering brackets. LASCA has three wins. LVS Ms Twenty Fourteen sixteen and last year have a feeling we'll be bringing that up here in a minute yeah while they're there. It's right there before that check out all the NASCAR action and make not this Sunday Sunday seven PM Eastern. That's a pretty good night. That's weird without a day off the next day. You know this is kind of of interesting though this this is a pretty interesting shot here for NASCAR because they're used to going up against the NFL at noon where you have a ton of NFL fell games going on now. You're only going up against the Sunday night game and if it's a game not everyone in the country is interested in a shot at possibly stealing some of the ratings. I think it also has to do with the temperature at the race track but yeah I don't forget ratings tripleheader weekend truck series xfinity series and cup series all in action and let's look at the top five championship drivers at Vegas because you know how much I like top five lists. We begin with Kyle Busch. He is your point lead heading into this thing. He's gotTa win at Vegas. His home track seven top fives nine top tends to polls average finish of twelve point to That's pretty cool. How about this. We've also got Denny Hamlin.

"To go toe to toe with those guys are the single car team and and you know really do that so that it truly is the single car team and operation and that just shows the power of the people that have you're only as good as the people around you always said that mchugh deliever in that and that's what shows for sir for ron with matt benedetto a couple more question for you <hes> looking ahead at the rest of the schedule for the season any tracks catch your eye that you might have the best chance out yeah i mean i really wanted to get in this weekend because that was a big one way at circle off and to try and sneak in the playoffs here before the the cutoff so that was another big part of the disappointment but <hes> aside from that i would say darlington coming up is <hes> you know better track so the ones we have to seem the circle off <hes> where we can make a bigger. You're different than team are the ones <hes> <hes> this year or having a let off the gas and use the brake pedal and you know drive with my feet is basically how i say we we as a team could make a bigger difference with what we have and run better so <hes> the tracks with the five fifty horsepower the bigger racetracks <hes> any with just high downforce package is made it harder on us. <hes> you know some of the mild has some that's bright think darlington is worn out <hes> to where we will have some of that after all the time and we will eat that handling and stuff to come into play. Where <hes> we you know we could have a shot there. Hopefully <hes> of course the role will is is a great one because you definitely driving with your feet there and then yeah and then <hes> martinsville other good one but you know the main priority right now is darlington. I'd love to sneak our way into into the <hes> the playoffs and hate we missed that shot this weekend but <hes> those basically the ones where we get the driver feeding up gas our strong suit the ones the darn near wide open all the way around and i it makes it tougher for your driving ability and your team's ability to really show what we have and you're not taking this weekend off either right yeah exactly that's gonna be fun being road courses and driving with wheat drive eighteen. I k nine supra for <hes> <hes> for dougans racing which is gonna cost road america's one of my favorite racetracks i've ever been to in my tire life so they just recently asked me if i'd be able to to hop in <hes> and filling and drive that thing and of course.

"He called it nutty putty when he started selling it in the nineteen forties but when a marketing consultant named peter hodgson listen brought the rights to nutty putty he renamed it silly putty and introduced it around easter which might be why the stuff found its way into plastic eggs which which became the classic packaging for the material now according to most histories in the early days the focus was to try and sell silly putty as a practical putty practical able to what purpose no but it found its way into the market as a toy it didn't immediately succeed even in that context but a a new yorker article mentioned silly buddy and that got things moving pretty quickly for the stuff now that being said people would come up with a few practical uses for silly putty for one thing it can be used to remove lint from clothing for another astronauts apparently took stuff with them up into space so that they could stick silly putty to walls of the space craft and then hold various tools in place in microgravity so you're working with the tool. You put push it against the silly putty. That's on the wall all and it'll stay there instead of just floating off. It makes sense. You don't want your thing magingo bloating off amid job but it's not exactly the practical use case that we can all identify with down here here on earth. It's rare that we need to make such considerations now. One other person i should mention in this episode is someone dedicated to coming up with ridiculous. Inventions wins that solve precisely zero problems and this is all on purpose. His name is matt benedetto and i have never met matt benedetto eto. I do not know matt benedetto but i admire him and his ingenuity he has the instagram account unnecessary inventions and i think he's kind of brilliant his inventions range from the chuckle inducing silly like gloves that mimic crocs sandals to potentially disastrous such as is right round cone device which is an ice cream cone holding drill bit they would put on the end of a power drill. It's got ah a place where you would then slot in an ice cream cone that way you can get perfect coverage. When you're looking the ice cream cone you just pull the trigger on your up power drill. It'll spend spend the cone as you like the ice cream as you could imagine this would create disastrous but potentially hilarious results other inventions include a pizza fanny pack so that you can have slices of pizza at the ready you wear them on a belt or the text bumper t x t bumper which there's a headband with a bumper built into the headband so that you can look on your phone while you're walking around and not worry about bumping into stuff like street signs and telephone poles thousand trees and other stuff. I definitely use one of those or the sweat gutters another head b._c. Would wear that collects the sweat dripping down vermeer head and funnels it into gutters complete with downspouts so that the sweat doesn't get in your face how thoughtful these are are all jokes obviously and they are pretty amusing also aren't really that far off from some of the stuff we've seen on television or in stores whether those stores were selling stuff as novelties or genuine products so i recommend you take a look at the unnecessary inventions instagram account to see his work because there's a lotta stuff. I actually saw one of his videos up on facebook. The day that i'm recording this podcast probably because the facebook spoke algorithm is super creepy and pays attention to what i'm browsing so they can serve up related content on my feed but that's a topic from in different show anyway. I once did an episode about a guy named marvin minsk <unk>. He's an artificial intelligence pioneer or was. I should say passed away in two thousand sixteen eighteen <hes> he's. He wasn't artificial intelligence pioneer. He was also a cognitive scientist. Men's ski helped establish the a._i. Laboratory at m._i._t. He he created the first head mounted display back in nineteen sixty three his work led to the development of sophisticated artificial neural networks he made made numerous contributions to science and technology and he also made a truly useless machine on purpose..

"Another team I wanted to look at is Matt Benedetto and the Levine family racing team because obviously they're kind kind of a satellite gibbs team but you know you look back starting at Pocono seventeenth twenty-first fourth at cinema twenty-seventh then <hes> eight the Daytona and then Sixteenth Kentucky last week. This is another team. It's starting obvious you're looking at those numbers. Those aren't consistent finish yeah. It's too too inconsistent for me but at the same time there are still some you know better finishes than that team has been having in the past. I sure sure and again but I think it's I think the I mean they are not at the Toyota level. That furniture row racing was last year so we expect and again if anybody expected that that's that's wrong on because you get what you pay for. This is a smaller team. They don't have as much sponsorship. They're putting in a certain amount. They're not going over like like <hes>. You know like it was done with Barney visser like what Barney did so again. I there's some things that they're doing well but they're just being too inconsistent at this point and I think you need to see more out of this group and you know they've shown some speed at times other times they they haven't benefactor as much and you you want to see that change the second half of the year look I mean there's there are a lot of questions out there of where's Christopher bell going to be racing and house Toyota going to get six drivers into five spots. If it's only five spots you know at the end of the day what are you judged on your judged on your performance and for as good of a guy as Matt Benedetto is. What's this performance going to say? Is that going to be enough that if Toyota feels feels like that there's six spots. Six drivers for five spots at Matt doesn't get involved in that shuffle somehow I mean that's at that point. I mean look. He can't be worrying about that. He's gotta be trying to be as good as possible each and every week but he's also got understand. Dan You know what what could be there on the horizon. Things don't work out Jeff. I mean it's is a performance baseboard. I mean no matter how much people love you or say. They love you. It's what have you done for me late getting signed. Thanks what have you done for me lately and that's exactly where Matt it finds himself is that this is arguably the best right in and see got involved in the cup level and he's got he's got to pick that car up and put it on his shoulders and we've seen moments where he's done that and everything's worked out well but he and Mike Wheeler have got to continue you to grow that ninety five team and his second half of this year they have got to get in some kind of consistency a little bit like we're talking about Kris Buscher you gotta go back and look at a string of eight or nine races. Were all of a sudden. He's been consistently insistently between twelve and a BA- sixteenth in with an occasionally top top ten alone way. I'm not saying he couldn't go to a place like Talladega and pull off a surprise wind down. There may be too little too late but it's still the opportunity already exists to do that great showing at Sonoma can he do that. When he goes to Watkins Glen shows he's got some ability on the road courses but can they come back with another car that good and Kenny make it happen <hes> at a place like the Glenn so these are our are moments where you step back and you watch people like at with with the specific reason Chris Buscher you know Matt Benedetto these guys are basically auditioning for the future you know? Do we keep them or do we replace him and you mentioned mentioned kind of another car. Owners are watching going. Do I want this guy when when my when my driver XS deal is up. I want this guy I want this guy or I want to keep my guy so I mean that's yeah because you know.

"Same. How will your spending that fifty grand? Wait and see how much of it I get. But, but we'll see you know, we'll be responsible with it. Now, this win does make you playoff eligible and gives you a shot. To defend your title. What kind of things are you guys going to be working on, now until the start of the playoffs to be ready? Just keep improving as a race team have done really good job over the last few weeks. And I felt like this summer stint where we actually get a race more often with help, Jerry. And I in this whole twenty four team gets be communicating better and performing better so far. That's shown. And we're just gonna keep experimenting with our trucks, and communicating well and try to build up that say experimenting with your trucks, there does this win. Give you a little bit of flexibility to play with new thing this certainly does. And you know, having three really strong teams here at GM's. It also winds up that window where one of us can kind of go off in a different direction and see if it works. And if it does great if it doesn't mean just resort back to what the teammates out. So, but yeah, certainly with that wind pressure off. It opens up the win. It'd be a little more aggressive and tries to do things. You had no idea if you were even going to be at the track on a week to week basis, but you won the championship how much is things change since then it's back to work really, you know, it's obviously it kinda opened up the door here GM s to have a great opportunity over here and compete for another championship but side of that that's the past and the only gives your last race last season. So we'll go out and try to win another one how the enjoyed your time at GM s and working with the team that's been great. You know there's some people here that give me a pan about every now and then but outside of that. It's, it's awesome. You know, Mr Gallagher, and the and the Gallagher family gave me a great opportunity to come over here, and it's, it's definitely a change of scenes compared to be a single car small team. But it's all the better, you know, I feel like we have all the resources we need to go out and win. And we just gotta continue doing that. All right. Last question here for you. We saw Kyle Busch, you had to run going with a beard. He kept the proof long code in eventually, had to shave it off. His there's something going on with the mustache. Is it a fashion statement? Or is it correlated anything on the track is? For the playoffs last year, and it worked, and I shaved it and got fired the next day. And so I brought it back and got a job here s and just. There's just along for the ride now the mustache somewhat of a good luck stable for Brett Moffitt That was new. a new house, along with twenty eighteen park gander outdoor structure. He's champion Brett Moffitt coming up. We'll look back on the events of this week in NASCAR history and get some drivers pizza preferences as we get ready to head to Chicago. Hey, this is Matt Benedetto driver, the number ninety five pro core Toyota Camry, whether you're a g.

"NASCAR your first event. Mike. What are your thoughts taking this all in at your first? Nascar event. Absolutely blown right now the whole spectacle, this whole weekend, and how much it means to me all the vets out there in our whole nation, how much does day means us and. Remember all the fall and. Rana's four brothers happened when I was over an Afghan, and so it is perfect. Being invited by that team. And. Great to me, as every everyone here is such a great event, and the, the spectacle that they put on. Absolutely outstanding. And. Much respect for this whole event and the. All the different military families out here, gold star families. It really does strike a nerve because guys at. We did lose over an Afghan and. I'm really, really. Kind of really blown after the whole all this attention because there's thousands and thousands of other vets that deserve this more than I do. And I'm just happy to be able to be here, and I'm happy that the bigger picture this all this is now that the whole world did see my brothers in their last names. They saw their legacies and. Hoping to do their name, proud and do their families Brown. We are so grateful for having you here, Mike marine. One of those guys that crawled across the finish line for the Boston marathon here for NASCAR to be honored among many of the heroes here today. But Steve, what a great day we're having here to honor those around us the ones that we have lost and fought for our freedom. It's great to have that in our memory today. Steve richards. Absolutely wendy. Let's talk with Matt Benedetto, starts twenty-seven afternoon. A long day here at Charlotte Motor Speedway. What have you done to prepare for the six hundred miles? Well, all my frost fitting, guess, and hydration will come into play finally so just stay hydrated, all the time really well. And up the old sodium intake a little bit to get ready and just east wanna cramp up and pass out either. That wouldn't be how's your card actually at the end of practice? Good. We didn't qualify where we wanted, but racer vise the Oslo award during practice and knocking ally. We are having trouble getting tight off. And then we made some big changes at the end and all of a sudden. Last run a practice sounds like good. So hopefully it does race track positions Tuffah passing hard. So hopefully we can make our way up there. The track position, then stay up there today. Yeah, we'll do it will be. All right. There's Matt Benedetto starts twenty-seven, and of course, Matt Benedetto, is.

"In it and we execute. I saw a throwback Thursday post from you the other day ten years ago this week a really young looking Matt Benedetto gets his first win with Toyota and Joe Gibbs racing at Tri county speedway. What your member about that day? Yes. So that was that was awesome. That's kind of a home track. For me. I'm a hickory Motor Speedway is my primary home track. But Tri county is close to me. It's only about thirty minutes from my house. And when I was first driving for JR, and with Toyota, and you know, j d Gibbs was the car owner of that number eighteen so it was it was a really. Special day me and Austin Dillon had a heck of a battle for the when we had multiple green white checkered attempts, and yeah that was that was a really special day for me my family because my first one with Joe Gibbs racing. I was really cool bio on your face to was anybody mad after the race everybody. All cool. Yeah. No. It was such a good, Dan. I remember my my parents coming up on my dad's screaming his head off and was laughing. He almost passed out because he jumped up so fast and was so excited that was a really neat day. And obviously, you know, J D was such a big influence on my career. I was cool. Cool memory. Kim we hear an awful lot about the influence j d Gibbs had on the sport and how his loss hit the garage area. And there's another instance of it. Yeah. It seems like JD really touched everyone in the garage, myself included. He was one of the very first people I met when I started this for ten years ago. So it was cool to hear Matt story. Because again, you don't think that you know, everyone's connected as they are. And then you hear these stories come out of the woodwork like, wow. Like six degrees to Kevin bacon. That's the way it kinda comes out. Don't forget. Now, you can hear a lot more of that interview. With Matt this coming Tuesday night at seven o'clock eastern time on NASCAR live, including Kim. He's a big guy. Regimen and his wrestling match with a can of biscuits. Oh, all right. Calendar. Piqued my interest. I sure we're coming up on NASCAR live race day.
