"All right, we're back here at the hockey party cast with the matri filippovich and Harmon dial harm. Let's talk about chicken. So he goes for a 2023 first, which is top 5 protected. Washington's 2024 second. And a 2026 second down the road. And there was a lot at play here. There's a ton of context. It's clearly important that was dictating this price, right? It came out afterwards. Elliott Freeman reported that the coyotes essentially had no interest in taking any dollars back, even if it was expiring for this deal, like to facilitate it. They needed to do a deal like this where they just take on futures that they don't have to pay for now and just get off of Jacob chicken's contract, which in and of itself is such a sad way to think about this thing because you're talking about a 25 year old defender who's in his prime who's really good, who's making half of what he probably should be on the open market and you're viewing it as like, this is a bit too pricey for us. I think we need to cut some costs here. Let's save the coyotes conversation for us for a bit down the road here because it's another whole separate issue, but from the senator's perspective, I get the risk of, all right. If they missed the playoffs again, this is too straight years where they trade a first for Alex to bring. They trade a first for Jacob Chico. They're running out of runway with cheap ELC or similar to what we're talking about with the Canucks where Jake Sanderson has one war. They've already paid Josh Norris. They've already paid Brady could shock. They've already paid Tim stutzle. They've paid Thomas Shabbat, right? They've already not boxed themselves in but like they're paying for a lot of these young players and they don't have the team success yet. That's to show for it, right? And so you're wondering whether it's from a timing perspective the right timeline, whether it makes sense, I guess I don't want to be speaking out of both sides of my mouth here because the senators aren't necessarily that far ahead of the Canucks in terms of their place in the league hierarchy. But I do like that they went and at least got a cost controlled 25 year old defenseman taking even though they're not in that dissimilar position. I know that they're much closer to the playoffs this year. There is risk involved, but I just maybe what's clouding my judgment is the fact that I feel like I'm on the extreme end of my Jacob sugar and evaluation. I think he is very, very good and the conversation around him has not done justice what a player he is. Yeah, I think there are also a couple of differences in comparing the senators and the cocks. Number one is senators at this point. They don't

"Frasers entire career has been about the sky. The matei woman began as a pilot. Then she started an aerial photography company. But it wasn't long before she aimed even higher. By being the first indigenous woman to launch an airline in Canada. Tara wants to bring an indigenous worldview to the skies. Welcome to unreserved Tara. Thank you for joining us today. Amazing. Thank you for having me. So if I as an average Joe, Joanne, Rosanna. Book a flight on his guillo air is my experience on your airline going to be different. What would I expect? Well, I think you would expect safe reliable service we have scheduled service from Vancouver to Qualcomm beach. Acknowledging the territory that we depart from that we arrive at. And onboard the aircraft I imagine you Rosanna flying from Vancouver to Qualcomm beach and taking in the beautiful view, the mountains and the sea and having an opportunity to see the land as a bird would. We have lots of things and ideas that are underway to collaborate with both beach first nation, as well as Muslim, to be able to tell some stories. We don't yet, but we aim to soon have in the seat back pockets, stories, and things that the nations wish for people that are traveling on our airline to know. Cool, I want to take your airline. Is there going to be tea and badnik is my question? Well, it's a short flight, but we have been exploring how we can offer indigenous foods or teas in our departure areas before flight and our engaging with other indigenous entrepreneurs to see how we can incorporate those things into the day. I love that this idea that you have of incorporating indigenous land acknowledgments, for example, or providing people with information and reading material for the trip over. And just the whole way that you want to be treating people, taking your airline, acknowledging the territory and the people and so on. How do you think this indigenous worldview, this perspective, these actions change or will change or improve even aviation as we know it? Well, I think that an indigenous worldview, it centers our humanness and our responsibility to our relations. And those things just quite naturally, in my view, shift everything. How we think about the land that we're traveling over, you know, when I witness the land from the air before I became a pilot, what led me to become a pilot, I imagine other people having that deeper connection to each other and to community, and I think that it sounds really simple Rosanna, but I think those are the things that shift everything. Yes. And what was your vision for esque air? So my vision for esco air was to connect people with the land to bring travelers to communities. To be able to, I don't know, show others the wonder of flight. And for me, I have come to realize that I'm a real entrepreneur and so I wanted to be able to create my own business in my own way and use what I've learned over the past two decades in this industry to see how I can, you know, not just provide service as an airline, but also look at how I can uplift indigenous peoples and communities in the work that I do. Uplift, I see what you did there. But why an airline? I mean, many people would be happy just to make it to be a pilot and to fly the aircraft or to be somebody who takes care of people in the air. Why did you go so far as to become a CEO owner of your own airline? Career as a pilot is very rewarding and challenging. And I had an entrepreneurial spirit that was awaiting to be a liberated and I wanted to be able to build something of my own where I could do things differently where I could focus on the things that I thought were important. And also use some of this to disrupt our industry, aviation aerospace is a very male dominated industry. With very few women. And so to be able to, I don't know, I guess just see what I could create. The name esque air, how does that name connect to your vision? So a scale is a key word for woman and I chose the name mindfully and boldly in an industry like mine. As an act of reclamation, reclamation of womanhood, reclamation of matriarchal leadership and reclamation of language. Interesting. When you say Remy creating remay trading the sky, what do you mean by that? Yeah, so we think of ourselves, you know, we imagine together reimagining re matrin and rebuilding an air transportation system centering equity and sustainability. And when I say remitting, it means a return to mother earth, how are we going to take care of mother earth, how we're going to uplift women in this industry. It means honoring matriarchal leadership and the unique ways that women lead with focus on care and community. And why do you believe that we need to re matri the sky? Is

"For the community. That's right. And household arrangements were different. That's one of the reasons I proposed that we should get rid of this concept of head of household. This is part of white western patriarchal thinking about marriage. Did Africa have patriarchy at some point it did? Did it look like western patriarchy? No. Did Africa have mattress centricity? What I call, well, motherless, what on other African scholars have come over? Yes, and African patriarchy did not snuff out mattress centricity, the matri focal family unit. It did not. It lived alongside of it. There's a kind of totalizing feature to western patriarchy that is almost, it feels impossible to overcome. It pervades everything. There was a balance. Maybe even a competition in some African societies by the time patriarchy made its way into African societies. And so, and of course, with colonialism, we get the overlay of not just African patriarchy, but western patriarchy, which is just devastating. Devastates African culture. So even the household look different. You don't necessarily have men. You sometimes have polygamous marriages as well, right? Or you have polygynous marriages, you know, men with more than one wife. And so you don't always have this nuclear or patriarchal household, or sometimes what you have are these matching focal household units with mother and children. In a compound situation. So yes, they looked very different, very different than what we have today. Many different kinds of marriages. Let's take a little deeper on so I've read about this concept of complementary and balance when it came to men and women relationships in west and west Central Africa where I think it touches on what you were getting to where it's not necessarily that one person was more important or at more value, but it was a different type of thing that you brought to the table, whether it was an economic perspective or the physical or emotional perspective. This has come up in your work as it relates to this at all. Well, yes, honestly, I'm going to write about it a lot more in the second volume. I really want to explore a term that I introduced in this first volume afrikaner kinship structures because some of those traditions are still with us. They're most recognizable in poor and working class black communities. But some of those, they are wholesome. We have unfortunately pathologized them in the west. But they are wholesome they are powerful structures and systems. I just argue in the book that we can have kinship wealth without financial wealth. When we only have kinship wealth, then they'll structures can sometimes be burdensome because there's not enough financial wealth to go around. And one person or the few people with a little bit of resources are expected to do everything for the whole kin group. And that's tough. And so that's one of the reasons I argue that we've got to solve the wealth lessness problem that America imposed on people of African descent. But I'll say this. One of the problems J that we have with understanding what we're dealing with when we're investigating African history is the overlay of Islamic culture and traditions and western Christian culture and traditions. Most of us are doing work on African societies. And we're not penetrating the impact of those traditions on African cultures. This is why in many respects, during the 19 70s, late 60s and 70s, when you had a strong rise of black cultural nationalism and many black feminists have critiqued this that many of the black men who were saying, you know, this is how our African ancestors lived, and this is what we're supposed to be doing. What they were really doing, Jay, what they were resurrecting these eurocentric Victorian ideas about, you know, the role of women in the role of men in communities and family life. They were not African ideas, right? And even if they thought they were, if you're looking at what's going on in contemporary Africa, you have those Victorian ideals as well. So it requires one of the things I'm going to do is develop a syllabus. And I tell you, in order to really understand and access the information, we have to get into what the archeologists are doing. We have to get into what the archeological anthropologists are doing. When they're digging, when they're kind of digging up excavating African cultures, I'll give you a great example. Many people today would find that African girls, adolescent girls would be very shy about anything that has to do with sex education or it's like this is like a taboo subject. You don't talk about it. But what I want to visit great Zimbabwe, about ten years ago, one of the things that the archeologists that they have dug up are these kind of sexual figurines and scholars believe that these were used in the ancient Zimbabwe to sex education for training girls and boys about their bodies about sex and sexuality. I mean, who would have known, right? So we have to do a different kind of research to even know what's happening. And I'm building a bibliography right now. And I think one of the people that we really need to read, who was isolated and certainly not in black nationalists, communities, but was isolated generally from the west. It was only the Russian scholars that would pay attention to him, is shaken to deal up. I think he does incredible work on black, he uses the language of matriarchy at times. I like mattress centricity and the import of patriarchy, the kind of the rise of patriarchy. So he's going way, way, way back. And so one of the things we have to ask when we're asked when we're investigating these questions is, what period of Africa? Which cultures? What time period within the particular culture, right? It's complicated. It's yes. It's different, but we have a long way to go to know and understand those differences. And the ways that we have been studying African heritages and cultures, I believe, have just enthralled us and trapped us within more mythology than in many respects reality. We need a new bibliography. We need a new methodology for wrapping our minds around what these pre colonial cultures were really about. You gave the example of cultural naturalism to start this sort of segment of the conversation. And I think that's helpful context from what I'm hearing you say, we may have looked at a certain time period that may not have been, we may not have gone far back enough or we may not have been able to separate what exists now that's originally and truly and holy from the African mind and what has been brought on to it by that you mentioned western Christianity and Islam. Am I understanding that? Absolutely. Absolutely. Yeah, I think I appreciate you bringing up the work of Gio. I think one of the books I've read most of is believe the cultural unity of black Africa, which I think gets to what you're talking about about the matrilineal element of this. Yes. So the bibliography needs to be expanded in order for us to actually dig deep enough to do the work we need to do today. And African feminists and womanist scholars have really done some good work. Isi amad. Or you're wrong or you're me..

I wonder if in your family's experience or broader communities experience you think that there are good things and bad things for the quality of life on the island. Of that intense connection, and so many people going back and forth between Puerto Rico and New York Yeah. I mean, I think quality of jobs is definitely one thing. My mom is a high school teacher, and she talks about how you know a lot of her co workers who are teachers. It's just better for them to like, move toward Landau or moved to, you know, Miami or someplace in the states because they get paid more or you know, quality of life is better. To let you know to to to live in Puerto Rico. Yeah, just like husband Been. What you've been saying on this on this episode is that It's hard and as a young person you just especially in the arts like To get a job in New York is a lot easier than to get a good job in Puerto Rico. I think jobs have to do with it. Lot of you want to talk to you? I'm not an expert. And I I read that this this exodus in the last 10 years with, you know, rivals or maybe even surpasses. Um, what happened in the fifties? When so many of our Family members came to New York. Um and it does you know it? It is important to remember that people are also moved back sometimes. Um, you know, I know and it's moved back. Say that again. Sorry. I'm so sorry to interrupt you, but my parents left Puerto Rico for 30 years went back. I mean, it's Yeah, I grew up. No, not at all. I mean, that. That's exactly it right. Um But, yeah, remote creation, like moving back to the island. Um, I was even Elva require. You know that bar in Rio Piedras and I was listening to some libraries. My party is already exactly so. So I was listening to them. And and they made an announcement saying, like, Hey, everybody, like, Tell your relatives tell your friends who have moved to come back and buy property because everyone else all these, You know, they were saying, basically all these gringos are coming and um and buying Apartments and buying land and making it impossible for us to live here, and we need to, like, stake our claim for our own people as well. And so you know, there's also a conversation about whether that would also continue to drive up prices and be its own, You know, different kind of gentrification. Like like Who? Who are we really looking to? Afford to live in Puerto Rico. But that's very much like part of the public discourse now is how do we You know who is Puerto Rico for? Um and there's that refrain. You know, Puerto Rico Parallel Puerto Rican, you Puerto Rican for Puerto Rico for Puerto Ricans, which also to me. Oh, sounds a little bit, um, a little dangerous because there are Dominican immigrants. There are other immigrants who are there. And I think that in some ways, you know, can we make space for more people, while also maintaining Affordability and a certain quality of life. I wonder if in your family's experience or broader communities experience you think that there are good things and bad things for the quality of life on the island. Of that intense connection, and so many people going back and forth between Puerto Rico in New York. Yeah. I mean, I think quality of jobs is definitely one thing. My mom is a high school teacher, and she talks about how you know a lot of her co workers who are teachers. It's just better for them to, like, move to Orlando or move to, you know, um Miami or someplace in the states because they get paid more or you know, quality of life is better. Look, you know, Toto to let them play. There we go. Yeah, just like was been been what you've been saying on this. This arm this episode is that It's hard and as a young person you just especially in the arts like To get a job in New York is a lot easier than tol get a good job in Puerto Rico. I think jobs have to do with it. What do you want to talk to you? I'm not Celia. Well, I just I'm glad about what you said about surviving, which is a word that means you know the coming and going because it is such a fluid. Process. It's such a fluid relationship. And I read that this this exodus in the last 10 years with, you know, rivals or maybe even surpasses what happened in the fifties, when so many of our Family members came to New York on DIT does. You know, it is important to remember that people are also moved back sometimes. Um, you know, I know Annik back. Say that again. Sorry. I'm so sorry to interrupt you, but my parents left Puerto Rico for 30 years went back. I mean, it's Yeah, No, I don't know. I mean that. That's exactly it right. And there's even now I've heard some friends talking about this idea of re matri ation. You know, it's like a feminist twist on repatriation. Um Yeah. Remit creation. Like moving back to the island. I was even in everybody Quiet, You know that bar in Rio gathered us and I'm listening to some lightning everybody, everybody exactly so So is listening to something on and they made an announcement saying, like, Hey, everybody, like, Tell your relatives tell your friends who have moved to come back and buy property because everyone else all these, You know, they were saying basically all these gringos, they're coming and, um, I'm buying. Apartments and buying land and making it impossible for us to live here, and we need to, like, stake our claim for our own people as well. And so you know, there's also a conversation about whether that would also continue to drive up prices and be its own, You know, different kind of gentrification. Like like Who? Who are we really looking to? Afford to live in Puerto Rico. But that's very much like part of the public discourse now is how do we You know who is Puerto Rico for on bears that refrain. You know, Puerto Rico Parra Laboratory, Kenya's Puerto Rican first Puerto Rico for Puerto Ricans, which also to me. Oh, sounds a little bit, um, a little dangerous because there are Dominican immigrants. There are other immigrants who are there, And I think that in some ways, you know, can we make space for more people, while also maintaining Affordability and a certain quality of life. But anyway, yeah, that it's just something that's in the air all the time. Right in there and w N Y c. We're talking about the biggest move of any U S state or territory. In the new 2020 census numbers that just came out. The biggest population moved and it was a decline. Of 12% of the population of Puerto Rico 400,000 people since the year 2010. And we're talking about it with our own. A lot of Casanova Burgess, host of the Amazing WN, My C studios and for Tudo Studios, Podcast series Love Vegas stories of the Puerto Rican experience..
