"But i think is great in this film and there's a lot of sad moments happy moments. Let's take a pro. Yeah i mean. The thing was a lot of the movies of that era. We have these things called melodramas which is something. That's been kind of fallen out of favor but a lot of these dramas would have very strong romantic elements for example or it can be tear jerking stuff but it was very much playing the emotions. I mean i guess you could say to the back of the room. I mean it's very much the sort of upper operatic You know emotions and we get that here where you have this real star-crossed love affair with matahari and this pilot and it's this tragic doomed romance. It's played big. Audiences loved melodramas for many many many decades. And it's something that nowadays has really fallen out of favor or people really want emotional realism in their movies. Yeah i imagine this. This version of the matter. Harry story would carry any weight now because we know it's completely falsified. Yeah it pretty much is And i'll say. I enjoyed watching this movie too i. I wasn't quite sure how creaky when you're looking movies. So the thirties. You'll find some that have aged incredibly well like frankenstein. Holds up really well. I'm fritz lang's m holds up incredibly well There's some hitchcock steph. We're gonna tackle later down the road. That's really strong as well from thirties. But sometimes you'll find ones where you know. The sets look a little creaky and performances are kind of stiff. And i didn't find that to be the case here at all. I actually downloaded this movie from apple movies. And i was also not sure what quality of print i would be getting it was one or the audios a little muted or something like that and i was really taken aback at how beautiful it looked and also just how sharp dialogue was and it really put me in like this was a movie that a lot of it has a certain amount of this and artifice. That's very much engineered by what hollywood was doing in the thirties but nonetheless in artists that i enjoyed even if it didn't necessarily convince me i was watching anything approaching a realistic biography of mata hari. No and you mentioned the what. Melodrama earlier there was pontificating to the screen almost from time to time like monologues. And things like that. But i guess that was of the films of the era. I should say yeah. Because i mean the first real sound film is in nineteen twenty eight. It's the jazz singer also very racist movie. One that very problematic as your first sound movie but where only a couple years into the sound era and so you do have a lot of characters feeling like they have explain things. Because i don't really know what to do with sound yet. Like thirty one. They're pretty confident. You know frankenstein is a very strong use of sound film but You could definitely see that the seams are still..
Volatile tech stocks expose growing vulnerability in US market
"Next guest warned. There could be bigger pullback looming for some of the hottest names in this space. Let's go off the charts with the legendary louisiana mata louisi- mata technical research advisors louise. It is a pleasure as an honor for free to join us. We quote you many times on this show. So i'm really really curious to hear what you have to say about tech. You're you're climb melissa. Well we've had a volatile three or four months and technology has really been enough more or less going sideways for the fang stocks in particular. And we've got a little concerned that the most important thing would be support levels and recognizing the since two thousand when there were next we have earnings that these stocks but they could be off twenty percent and still be within an uptrend. Some of them are already off. When percent question is during a break. The support of these sideways consolidation. Will they be able to lift. Google of course has already lifted so we have. We have three stocks. Here today amazon. I think gives the first one I'm not seeing it. It may be coming up. But i'm not seeing any of that. Is you can see the sideways action. We have negative momentum on that on that chart and it's already been down eighteen percent so as long as it holds above twenty. Nine hundred is critical support than maybe just simply continues to consolidate further. Maybe we'll see a resolution on the upside that the point is that more or less been warning about support levels in suggesting we let the upside take care of itself. The next chart. I believe you have is microsoft and support. There's one ninety five but you can see also it's been going sideways for quite some time with lower highs and it's been down fifteen percent I think the most vulnerable of these stocks is net flicks which has not only a negative momentum on a weekly basis but also a negative divergence on a monthly so support for netflix's four seventy already off twenty percent and keeps bouncing and going down another twenty percent within the sideways consolidation so That's our concern here today. I must say was impressive. Day and not all tech stocks are looking vulnerable but these ones that we have been concerned about louis. At what point do you say. They're consolidating and building a base as opposed to threaten to break the support. That would be breaking out through the upper level of these consolidations so basically these are critical support levels as long as they hold. We continue to define that as a consolidation. And if at some point down the road they lift up through the entire consolidation than we. We've become more constructive once again. Google for instances one of them has already broken out to the upside. Netflix's looks a little bit more vulnerable to me. Last question lewis. Because we quote you and i. I think that we misquote you. But the sentiment is there when it comes to your saying the longer the base the higher in space is that is that the sanger. We're getting that right. Yes absolutely the bigger. The base that aaron space the because atop the bigger the drought and the bigger the drops a longer the need for repair. And i think what we're seeing as we're getting excited about some of the underlying broadening that's taking place is that may be the repair processes beginning for some of these other stocks that have been in bear markets. I could throw a triple this one. That's looking interesting but you have a few industrial center. Starting to break out in that heart warming. We felt that the market has been a little bit mixed up itself and not sure you know as a discount mechanism. What's coming six months. Maybe these vaccines we have a better
Pressure mounts for Biden to get high-level intelligence briefings
"More. Republican senators are admitting to reality today. Bringing the total to twelve in some form today. Lindsey graham chuck grassley rob portman. Mike rounds josh hawley. John cornyn and john thune who is number two to mitch. Mcconnell in the republican leadership said the joe biden should be given the president's daily brief on national security issues. Republican senator james langford of oklahoma said he would take action if joe biden doesn't get the president's daily brief tomorrow. There's nothing wrong with vice-president biden getting the briefings to be able to prepare himself and so that he can be ready to presence already getting those. There's nothing wrong with the former vice president getting those Kamala harris is on the intelligence committee. She has all the clearances that she needs to be able to do that. there is no loss From him getting the briefings and to be able to do that. And if that's not occurring by friday. I will step in as well and available to push into say. This needs to occur so they regardless of the outcome of the election. Whichever way that it goes at people can be ready for that actual task that brought no response from the president of the united states. None mata word now just imagine a fortnight ago. If any of these republican senators had separated themselves from donald trump on anything no matter how slight the separation might be imagine the rage tweeting at them from donald trump. Imagine that voice yelling over the helicopter noise as he condemned those republicans to white house. Reporters imagine what he would have said about them to his rally. Audiences who would've obediently roared back their disapproval of donald trump's new republican enemies. Instead we have silence the sixth consecutive day of silence from the man who we thought did not know. What silence is we have never seen trumpian silence like this because we have never seen donald trump a politician defeated before we have seen him humiliated usually by his own words. we have seen him impeached. We have seen him disgraced but we have never seen him defeated until now and in defeat we now know. He melts into a cowering silence. The silence is the concession speech. The silence is the sound of donald trump
The Other Big Apple
"Well i was kind of. I guess in inadvertent midwife that we at the at the fellowship that we did back in what year was two thousand thirteen although we agree time has ceased to have any meaning. And that is michael pollen of michael palin fame. He is indeed the advert midwife of guest or pod. Because nikki and i were together at uc berkeley that year in two thousand thirteen out of fellowship. Run by michael. That's how we met. And you discovered your shared love of science slash food. yeah it's one of the happier offspring of that fellowship. Obviously if you're into the stories behind food and farming as we both are michael's writing is pretty much at the top of your list. We've wanted to have him on the show for ever and this episode was the perfect excuse to revisit one of our favourite of his books. The botany of desire in the botany of desire michael traces the stories of four plants and their intimate relationships with humans. One of those plans is the apple tree. And i don't know about you. But when i think of apple trees the first person is of is johnny appleseed. This is a very american thing to think of. I'd never heard of until. I moved here so for our non american listeners. This is what americans are thinking of when they think of johnny appleseed well they would probably have the walt disney image johnny appleseed which is of this you know barefoot guy on the frontier bringing goodwill sweetness to people when people hear johnny appleseed. It's it's very wholesome. It's very Uncontroversial he's a disney character right very soft. But actually the the real. Johnny appleseed and i use that word advisedly because there's so much we don't know about him is much more interesting in his book. Michael traces janis path planting apples across the us. And we're going to do the same here but i. There weren't actually apple's growing here. Before europeans arrived there crab apples that were here in the sixteen hundreds but native people did not have sweet apples. This is amy traverse. Oh she's the author of the apple lovers cookbook and senior editor at yankee magazine. So apple's are we think of apples as this american fruit and american as apple pie and we identify closely with apples americans but it turns out. They're not they're from kazakhstan around town called alma mata which means father of the apple. I'ma autism now called amati and it's the largest city in kazakhstan. I've never been there but if you go. Apparently you will see whole forests of apple's fifty foot tall apple trees. Apple's coming up in the cracks of the sidewalks. It's like a weed there and these apple's most of them look nothing like our image of the apple. I mean there's some the size of there's there's big brown ones there's just this incredible range and they're apple trees that are kind of prostrate and grow along the ground and ones that grow vertically ones that have canopies. I mean it's just incredible diversity but a lot of apples weren't particularly sweet or delicious. At least not to humans. They were dry and hard so did survive the drop to the ground and often the flesh was kind of bitter acidic and tannock because these chemicals were preservatives that would also help to fight up worms and insects and that was all useful because the apples needed to be eaten by bears to spread their seeds. And if you would like to hear what the delight of a group of bear cubs that has just come across the pile of fallen apples. Sounds like which of course you would you need to be on our special supporters mailing list gastropod dot com slash support bears. Yes there are a lot of bears and kazahstan. They love apples but like humans they also prefer sweeter ones and larger ones and even retro ones. These big red sweet apples sometimes appeared in all the different ones that grew wild and bears chose those and help spread their seeds and so the bears hopes for just the kind of apple's that we wanted the large sweet red ones and so then people who tasted these bear approved. Apple's turned into apple fans to and not just the locals because that area of kazakhstan was right in the middle of the silk road. An incredibly important trading route that stretched all the way from china to europe magin stumbling across. I mean you're living in a world with no sugar ray or at least it's a very rare. That kind of sweetness is extremely rare and very fleeting and you stumble across a forest where you find these fruits that are sweet and that actually keep well. I mean not a lot of fruits that you might find in that same forest like apricots will rot very quickly whereas an apple would last for weeks or maybe months and so people would pocket them and bring them to the next trading ports or the next trading town and they really spread that way and they flourished wherever they spread. because apple's have a couple of botanical superpowers. Apples are unique in that they easily enter. Breed with the native crab will species of whatever region. They end up in. And so those crab apples within s- place in the genes that allowed to survive in their climate. So that's super useful. Those local crab apples had jeans. That would be perfectly suited to the local environment.
Berlin Model Y Timeline, TSLA Stock, Consumer Reports Autopilot Ranking
"Everybody robbing our here and today we're going to start off talking about about Tesla stock obviously a tough day for the markets. Today, we have some news on Mata. Why from gigabytes win an update from consumer reports on self driving technology and some news on the Fiat Chrysler Tesla credit situation. So Tesla's stock today was down four point four percent to four hundred and six dollars two cents compared to the Nasdaq down three point seven percent. So I think most of that move tesla was macro driven the S. and P. Five hundred and the Dow Jones Index had their worst days since. June I don't think volatility should be expected. Of course, we're heading into the US federal election next that's on Tuesday and a lot of places. Today are attributing the down market to a continued rise in covid nineteen cases, and in some locations that is causing restrictions that had previously been relaxed to be put back in place. So for example, I'm pretty close to Chicago. We heard today or yesterday that they are closing down indoor dining, and as we head into winter, obviously outdoor dining can be a little bit less appealing. So that can have even bigger economic impact than it would have during. The summer months for example and places like Colorado there at restrictions, doing things like closing down gyms. So we're seeing this all happen at the same time as the election approaches we haven't heard much on another round of stimulus or other. We have heard a lot about it, but we're not seeing any action there yet, and all that seems to be weighing on the stock. But at least at this point in time I don't see a whole lot of fundamental impact for Tesla. I'd be really surprised if had to end up shutting factory again I think eons comments and actions last time. That happened would make it difficult move politically to do that, but it's also not outside the realm of Boston. So we'll keep an eye on things as they develop. All right next up here we've got a story from Tusla Roddy, and before we even get into this unrest GonNa, add a huge preface that this report is just based on one person's interaction with one tesla employees. So a Lotta Times, information like this can just be completely inaccurate, but we're also here just trying find any little tidbit of information that we can. So I do think we're talking about. So test the ratty got. A message from a reservation holder for a model. Y. In the Netherlands and this person told Tesla Rati quote this morning. I got a call from Tesla in the Netherlands with some questions on my order. In that conversation, the Tesla employee told me that they expected deliver my Berlin build model y in q one or q two of twenty, twenty one they had just received an internal update on the billing process and Berlin and quote. So if we again go back to you this nice little timeline that was put together by Toby lend on twitter, we can see that four. Giga Shanghai. It took about five months ago from the first walls being constructed to the first body and and then a little bit over three months after that for first deliveries if Berlin can stay on the same schedule which so far it's actually been a little bit ahead of schedule from what the timeline was for. Shanghai could be looking at the first body and white sometime in January, and then maybe first deliveries sometime around April or may even March, and again that's based on Shanghai and there does seem to right now at least be a possibility of Berlin dragging even faster the other recent information. We got here was from the earnings call when dramatically no. When asked about the use of the pilot for forty six eighty cells and Fremont said quote we can use our pilot production facility in Fremont to support the new factory and Berlin as it ramps and quote. So within twelve months Tesla. Hopes to get that pilot lion to ten gigawatt hours of annual battery production that's a hundred and thirty three, thousand, seventy, five, kilowatt hour packs, and while it's not going to media, we hit that rate it shouldn't be too long from now where the output is you know maybe thousand or two. Thousand packs per month that would seem to hopefully track nicely along with the model why ramp up in Berlin. So again, on book this, saying take this with a grain of salt but to me, this does seem like a pretty plausible timeline q one or to, and this is obviously going to be even more interesting than normal vehicle ramp up would be because of the new technology tesla will be using in the Monowai. From Berlin I think we're all incredibly curious to see what the specs on that vehicle are give thing just while we're on the topic of motto that I want to. Motto I production is just about to explode. Next year I mean think about Tesla said in the ten Q, they're trying to ramp model white production not only in Shanghai not only Berlin but also in Texas in addition to having production of the why in Fremont came out on production on model y over the next two years is going to be incredible and prices are gonNA, come way down on that vehicle as production volume and look Liz ation increase. All right. Let's move onto the next topic here. This is from consumer reports. This got a lot of media attention. Today we're not gonNA spend on the time on it, but consumer reports today came out with their rankings for driver assistance systems, testing such systems from seventeen different automakers, and they actually have Cadillac supercrew coming out on top with a score of sixty nine and Tesla autopilot coming in second with a score of fifty seven. So of course, a lot of attention on this. But as I emphasized in the beginning, this is consumer reports testing for driver assistance systems.
Coronavirus Is Surging In The US
"One, But however you define it. Corona virus in the U. S is surging. Some parts of the country air passing more restrictions to try to combat the record number of cases this as we have yet another Corona virus outbreak in the White House. NPR's Alison Aubrey is with us now. Good morning, Alison. Good morning, Rachel. So when we say the White House we mean in the orbit of Vice President Mike Pence, several aides to the vice president have tested positive for covered 19, including his chief of staff. Nevertheless, the vice president decided to keep traveling to keep campaigning. What's the reaction been to them? You know, the decision to keep his travel schedule intact was made in consultation with the White House medical unit, the spokesperson said. Yesterday and pencils office says this is in accordance with CDC guidance for essential personnel there, basically making the case he has Essential work to do, including on the campaign trail. But public health experts Rachel are really questioning this definition. Here's Josh Sharfstein of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He served in the FDA under President Obama. The vice president should be limiting interactions with others because he could be harboring the virus and he could wind up becoming infectious. And so if there are essential activities that he needs to do in person, he should take extra precautions to do those, but otherwise I think he should be staying at home. Especially given around the country, including places. Pence is scheduled to travel such as Minnesota. The viruses circulating widely, right, So let's talk about that. Alison. What do the numbers tell us about the virus right now? The U. S has been averaging about 68,000 new cases per day. This is about a 30% increase compared to just two weeks ago. In recent days, new cases have reached record levels in several states, Utah, Tennessee, Illinois in Chicago over the weekend. Stronger restrictions took effect of bars and restaurants must close earlier in the evening. This is part of a curfew in the city. Other parts of Illinois have stricter rules, too, including new limits on the number of people allowed together and Rachel. They're certainly a lot of reminders around the nation to stay. Vigil eight, right? Hospitalizations from Cove. It have been on the rice too. I mean, does that mean we're likely to see more fatalities in coming weeks? You know, probably there are still a lot of people dying about 775 people per day in the U. S. On average. That's a lot lower than the highs of last spring. Part of this can be explained by the increase in cases among younger people who are less likely to die. But Rachel there's also been an improvement in treating people in hospitals. Physician Anish Mata is an infectious disease expert at Emory University. He is also a principal investigator for the H M Death Severe trialled at Emory. Last week, the FDA gave this antiviral drug full approval. Red death, severe reduced recovery time to 10 days for 15 days and also importantly, run desecrated treated patients had less use of mechanical valve leaders and other advanced oxygen's airport techniques. Compared to patients who didn't get room disappear. Now it's important to point out Rachel. This is not a home run treatment. It hasn't been shown to significantly prevent deaths among very sick patients, but it does have some benefits and Allison doctors now have other treatments they can offer as well as from desperation. That's right. Doctors have more tools in the toolkit. Now they have You know steroids, such as Dixon Math Zone better information about when to put people on blood thinners. Overall, the death rate appears to have dropped. In fact, a new study that included an analysis of thousands of hospitalized patients found that at the start of the pandemic patients had about a 25% chance of dying. Now they have an 8% chance. So still high, but definitely improvement. Yeah, definitely So younger people, you know, you mentioned more younger people have been diagnosed with the virus. So as we start to think about Thanksgiving Is there any way Tio Tio ensure that college students don't bring the virus home as they leave for break? You know, if you have a college student coming home to you find out if they're being tested, many schools are offering or even requiring an exit test or a departure test. Just before students depart for Thanksgiving break. I spoke to David Paul Thiel, He's a professor at the Yale School of Public Health about this He says. Of course, it's easy to identify symptomatic people. But this isn't good enough. I'm worrying about the student who feels just fine but who happens to have been exposed recently and who could be heading home to visit an elderly relative. And so we don't want to be sending little ticking time bombs home for Thanksgiving. I completely agree that we need to have everybody tested within 72 hours of departure. Now. Not every school can manage this given the cost. But many campuses are offering departure test, including big schools like Ohio State and many small liberal arts schools, too. During such as families that have college age kids either, right? I mean, my own family. We're trying to figure out what we do anything. We're all trying to figure this out, right? Everyone started figured out. So what can you tell us of this boy now, Zim? Well,
Additional care sites to be set up in El Paso as COVID-19 surges

Battery Rollout Plan Plus Elon Musk Production Email
"We're here today we are talking about a potential roadmap for tests roll out of their new forty, six eighty battery cells, and then we have a few other news stories to go through on Tesla's well, we'll start off with batteries where we have quite a bit of new information coming from a very active Ilan on twitter today and the first tweet I want to highlight here is on the forty-six, eighty sal and gigabyte lint yuan in response to whole Mars on twitter says quote Berlin will. Use Forty eighty sell with structural battery pack and front and rear single piece castings. Also new paint system. A lot of new technology will happen in Berlin, which means significant production risk Fremont and Shanghai will transition in about two years when new tack is proven and quote this whole situation with the ramp up of Gigabit, Lan has caused quite a bit of confusion because we do expect that to happen sometime pretty early in twenty twenty one probably sometime in q two would be the start production. But Tesla on the other hand side a lot of the technology during Battery Day was still in sort of a pilot phase and I think there were a lot of sumptious that initially this new Salle would be used in the Plaid Model S, which we know isn't expected until late twenty, twenty one. So that's where the confusion comes in of. Okay. What cells are going to be used in that initial motto why Production Pretty early next year from Giga Berlin with this tweet from Ilana it. Appears that we now have a pretty conclusive answer that from the beginning, it seems like tussle will be trying to use those forty six eighty tablets, battery cells, as well as these of of sell to pack or released sell to vehicles structure battery format as for the chemistry used in those cells. Tesla during the Battery Day presentation split up into three groups, iron based Nicholas, manganese, and high nickel in terms of cathodes and the model why image did appear in the nickel plus manganese section of that. Approach. So presumably, that's what we would see in the model. Why though did add in another tweet that quote we do expect to make heavy use of LLP for medium range cars and stationary storage and quote with L. B.. Being with the modern phosphate I think one of the key questions around the ramp up of the model y from Berlin is how Tesla handles that and the potential osborne effect that that could have on Mata y from let's say Shanghai or from Fremont this could be one of those ways if actually starts off with a lithium iron phosphate model Y in Berlin that would be. Obviously, a lower end vehicle that may have specs more comparable to what Tesla's producing today and Fremont, and presumably soon in Shanghai on the other hand, it would be a little bit unusual for Tesla to start production with some of that lower and vehicle usually they start on the higher end that work their way down. So I think whichever way Tesla approaches it is going to have its own set of issues and that's going to be one of the most interesting things to see how it gets handled. Next year we'll set that aside for now I wanNA talk more about the production and the timelines. Year homers reaction to this on twitter I'm not GonNa read all of it here but basically, he said that you had sandbagged the presentation during battery died in terms of of the timelines and he replied to those tweets by saying quote prototypes or a piece of cake. A high volume production of a new technology is extremely hard takes much longer than people think to climb the production s curve I can't emphasize enough that production is by far the hard part and quote this was something that Yulon emphasized consistently throughout the day presentation saying that not all the stuff is fully functional yet in a full. High speed production type of way just working really right now in a pilot line and with somewhat low yields or not yields up to what they would like quite yet. So that's what Tesla is working on figuring out right now at that pilot line, and once they do that hopefully, they can expand the concepts used in that pilot line pretty quickly in Gigabyte Lynn but I think that is the uncertainty that remains if the main issue is yield, Tesla knows how to settle this stuff up and they can get some production out of it. They may just not be able to produce at a higher. Rate for some period of time until those yields improve, obviously it's going to be more capital efficient if Tesla can figure that out on the pilot line before expanding dramatically in. Giga. Burlington but it's not like it's a binary thing. There's a lot of new technology here a lot of different steps in this process that Tesla's working on making more efficient and I'm sure some of those advancements those new technologies are ready to go right now with high yields while others such as the dry battery electrode process will probably take tesla a little bit more time to perfect. But just because a part of that. Process is imperfect yet doesn't mean that there's not going to be any production. It just means that production is going to be constrained until TUSLA can improve that the other element here that we haven't talked about yet is what about Giga Texas it seems pretty clear that if did you, Berlin is going to be using the new cell right off the bat. Then Gig a Texas probably also doing the same as we've talked about the targeted date for first substantial completion forget Texas is may first twenty twenty one. So we put all that together. It seems like by Q. Three next year Tesla is aiming. To have these new cells being produced at three locations, the pilot line and Fremont Gigabyte Lynn and access. So let's breakdown how this all might fit together and how it might spread across various product lines and will start with a couple of points. Tesla. Made at Battery Day. So the first is the plan Tesla said that in twenty twenty two, they hope to produce one hundred gigawatt hours of battery cells in house. We also know that the pilot line in Fremont, they hope to get that to output of ten gigawatt hours per year. But over time they hope to have each assembly line be capable. Of An output of twenty gigawatt hours per year. So piecing all these things together, I've put together a hypothetical forty-six eighty battery roadmap emphasis on hypothetical because a lot of this is just guesswork at this point in time but hopefully, we can kind of use this as a starting point and have a discussion about it and slowly gain more confidence in this roadmap as time goes by. So to orientate those of you that are watching on video on the left hand side, I have the products and then a hypothetical average capacity for each battery pack inside of those products then I have a table with. The number of units from each location the Fremont Pilot Line Giga Berlin and Gigi Texas, and then a second table showing the amount of batteries that would be required in gigawatt hours for that level of production each year

La Casa Matusita
"In many ways Lokossa to see sita is more legend than a place whispers surrounded in its neighborhood, Lima Peru and none of the stories about it entirely match they weave in and out of each other never forming a complete picture. Various businesses operated on the first floor of the two story building near the intersection Espana and Gossip Lhasa, de la Vega at us. But the top floor apartment rarely manages to keep an occupant. The each window that lines the wall is surrounded by cheery golden paint and Teal Trim. The Place Somehow always feels dark and closed in. Visitors find themselves assaulted by violent, but unseen forces, tortured cries and flying objects. A priest to attempted to exercise the building was heard screaming before he was found dead due to an apparent heart attack. The name itself derives from one of the legends surrounding. Qasim to see to. The Legend tells of Japanese immigrant by the name of much. Sita who killed his wife and her lover after discovering them in Flagrante. When he realized his children would never forgive him. He killed them as well before taking his own life. There are no historical records confirming this quadruple homicide ever occurred but allegedly, there are property records that Saint Immigrant family did occupy the building. At some point it is likely the name stuck due to rampant xenophobic sentiment in Peru during the first half of the twentieth century. Japanese immigrants began coming to Peru at the end of the eighteen hundreds and their numbers grew in decades that followed. By the nineteen forties however anti-japanese rioting and protests broke out in Lima result of long-standing xenophobia and the pressures of World War, two. Giga Texas Timeline Update, and the TSLA stock rebound
"Everybody. Robin our here, and today is kind of a Giga Day. We have news from gigafactory Shanghai Gigafactory, Texas gigafactory New York, and then we'll talk a little bit more about lucid ahead of their livestream unveil of the lucid air tonight, and of course, the stock which we can start out with dessel stock on the day to day finishing up eleven percent to three hundred, sixty, six dollars twenty eight cents on the back of a rising macaroni Environment Nasdaq for the day up two point seven percent. So as I said, yesterday, I, hate, stop-loss orders. This is exhibit a for why that is as Tesla today without much news swung back significantly in the. Other. Direction. That's really my only thought on the stock today. So let's move into the news. There was an interesting post this morning on Tesla Motors Clubs Forum by Ridge. Twenty twenty about a possible time line for Tesla's gigafactory in Texas. This user writes quote have some information on the tear factory build schedule. Tesla is sourcing how vendors slash contractors to bid on work at the site and quote this user then shares some screen shots presumably of some documents involved in that bidding, the most interesting of which lays out a project schedule in that project schedule not a first substantial completion date of May I twenty twenty one according to the American Institute of Architects. Substantial completion is quote the stage in the progress of the work when the work or designated portion thereof is sufficiently complete in accordance with the contract documents so that the owner can occupy or utilize the work for its intended use and quote the schedule also notes that the first dry in what happened on December thirtieth twenty twenty I xdrive just means that everything is sort of sealed up with the building shell so that interior work can commence without having to be exposed to the elements, and then in a separate page here that has also included. There's a more detailed schedule noting that in September they'll be doing things like underground electrical, mechanical plumbing, etc.. October would be fencing porta-pottys waste removal metals, recycling recycling removal, and then November would be architectural interiors which based on the dry and date assume would be non weather sensitive into your stuff. So obviously take this for what it's worth. It has just forum posts, but the documents to me look like they would be pretty legitimate I. Don't think there's a ton of reason to doubt it. I. Think for those of us that follow closely this would be pretty much in line with our expectations. This will be going from breaking ground to possibly production ready in under a year which we know Tesla is targeting based on their work active factory Shanghai originally and now With gigafactory Berlin as well. Speaking of Shanghai Tesla continues to make rapid progress at the gigafactory. They're the global times earlier. This Week reported that Tesla has completed the main section of phase two, which is for the Mata why and they write quote at present interior decoration and electromechanical testing being carried out and are expected to be completed on schedule in October and November and quote not exactly sure what interior decoration needs to be carried out and completed. I'm guessing that's probably something that's lost in translation probably more equivalent you interior design meaning, functional interior design. But regardless, we continue to see these reports about phase two in Shanghai though the Global Times appears. To also expect production to begin for the Monterey in one though they do cite other media reports on that which we have talked about. Personally, I'm still expecting some motto is to come out of gigafactory Shanghai. This you're probably not enough to be immaterial to quarterly results or the financials but more. So again, sign heading into twenty twenty one which cannot believe were that close to you already shifting back to the US and over to the energy side of the business with Peissel's gigafactory. In New, York a different type of gigafactory Tesla. Roddy today posted an article with the headline of quote vessel energy ramps hiring AC in New York for accelerated solar production and. Quote you on did actually re tweet this article in which Tesla Roddy writes quote a source familiar with the matter who spoke to Tessa. Roddy talk to employees at the plant who indicated the facility is currently operating on a twenty four hour schedule six days a week to keep up with demand. Altogether, this move seems to confirm the eighty eight acre location is accelerating solar production and installation insignificant way which coincides with the company's growth and the energy sector and quote while energy storage has definitely grown historically solar has actually been quite slow Tusla recently, which I think was correctly pointed out by Gordon Johnson in our bowl baird debate. So if we go. Back to two, thousand, seventeen, for example, cutie, Tesla deployed one, hundred, seventy, six megawatts of solar energy versus this most recent you only twenty seven megawatts of solar. There are a lot of reasons for that. The business model has shifted significantly but right now it's not at the point that at once what's Tesla's hope? Of course is that the solar roof changes that about which started in their cute you letter that quote solar roof installations roughly tripled in Q. to compare to key one, we continue to expand our installation team to increase the deployment rate and quote of course, this is a new product so to starting from a very low base for Tesla from. But hopefully, that growth rate continues we've also recently seen tesla cut their prices significantly for rooftop solar. Now, offering the lowest price systems in the United States at least at a dollar forty, nine per watt after incentives under cutting other systems and the US by about thirty percent on average. So plenty of reasons to be hopeful that Tesla is on the precipice returning to growth for the solar business and are on their way to finding a business model that works for them consistently for solar going forward. Next today on into provide an update to yesterday's discussion on delivery wait times. I've seen a few comments noting that those have changed for people today they have actually changed for me as well. So the model y currently sets for the all wheel drive version at seven to eleven weeks for me here in the Midwest two to four weeks for the performance for the Model S. and the Model X. Both of those currently sit at eight to twelve weeks versus yesterday's ten to fourteen. Weeks and the model three has held steady for all trims at two to four weeks.
What a Buddhist Monk Learned from Nearly Being Assasinated
"Thank you for making time for this. Really excited to talk to you. I really. WanNa. Hear your story because I've read a little bit about it and it's fascinating. Can you tell me how you first encountered Buddhism? Yes the first time I encountered Buddhism is in nineteen ninety. Lift to Uganda in nineteen ninety as students. Still mean for not fair Housing Need Gun Die Scholarship to study. INDIANA. Headed the government of India through in Yemen, extent culture program is going to pay for me to study in India. Business. That was excited. I didn't know anything about Buddhism, but the only thing that is connected to bosoms what Gautama because we studied history about Indian personalities like Mahatma, Gandhi, end Gautama Ferretti that good Mohsini Buddha. So good time. I have ever happy faintly and my story. So when I went to India I. did not that even the religion could Buddhism philosopher David so I just went to study business and until nineteen and arrived. I'm because when I arrived India, they had this strike. And then we we didn't go to school. We did started this school immediately. So then our putting a hostile where there are some people who looked very slim doing and. They have shaved head the they are putting on robes or rose. To say hello to them. So I went there then I sit hot one and the ad it beaming smile had. Happy so we became friends and in A. Long Story Short, the me into the temple I should dig would ask you then they told me about Buddhism there that Buddhists and the they told me don't take Dina just delighted breakfast. Assault then they are the ones who really told me that yes, this region called Buddhism and it took me to the temple for the first time and the temples. Good. Assure the hand. I should be behalf either in Chattanooga and that's when I I really got to know that a temple. So that's how I know about what is him but That Buddhist people edited and those most just wanted to be friends with me. I wanted to be with him and Cindy. GimMe Food they give me a minute things slowly slowly they stop telling me about. What they believe in. On time I went to Brahma, cameras, we just the boost people, but is meant tradition. The told me that debilitate Bra Mars. And I had seen one I was quite or the time in the evening Tony Oh I asked him you. Calm and peaceful way. Have you good evening? He told me he goes to meditate or. Meditation then I went there admitted with Matas and then they have discovered this that you focus on lucrative. And then you really meditated breathing in and breathe out but his commentary, right so your story piece food. Your Com nobody can destroy you. So when I finished that a mid station, I went to the monks again I told them that that'd be meditating this. Who told you to meditate thought that some of the WHO's Viacom common peaceful and told way can meditated. Then I told him what I've been doing the told me no, no, no. No you should meditate weapon go deep meditation, and now doesn't fuss time to get to know what meditation you good. Mom told me the best meditation Vision. So then I to know mutation literal. So from Buddhism. The most yeah. About Communication Gorby. I know you were raised Catholic. So, here you are in a completely different country encountering this religion for the first time a religion you didn't even know existed what about Buddhism and Meditation spoke to you given your history why was it so appealing this practice send this faith. Actually for me into the. Lack. of Meditation when I went to Meditates it was no Malini evening and then I was so stressed out in India, it's hot country I was eating hot foods and I was looking for Chatchai filled to see. Every time I went to look for because I was McCaffery those no jet unfunded when I go to the judge, this was in Hindi, a language that I don't understand. So now we're not going to judge there I was going. To check. So that. Good. That back. Then I believe like that. So now every time I go to check ECHINACEA the English obvious or gotTa salaries so which is my language I was just going to judge People just talking a foreign language and literally I said. This people have also religion could Hindus I to do what they believe in and then slowly by slowly when I went to. The fuss medication do not even a Buddhist one I did a Hindu meditation. So I sat. And mid I feel so much. More peaceful than me. When I was in chat, you know in chat sometime of silk can now is it new? Don they're going to pray things? So but that's a short time in a judge acquitted my bring. But when I was in meditation, I told really give any and. When I came out, it was so peaceful and relied rest of amongst the win admitted. So peaceful.

Panasonic Talks Energy Density
"Are at with that out of. Of the way, let's get sort of the main news here, and this is on Panasonic batteries. This is per a Reuters report, they spoke with Panasonic's of US v Batteries and they report quote Panasonic corporate plans to boost the energy density of twenty. One, seventy battery cells supplies to test link by twenty percent in five years and commercialize a cobalt free version in two to three years. The head of its US battery business said and quote they also report that Panasonic has already cut the content. Content to less than five percent of Nikko Cobalt, Aluminum Cathode, which by the way I have to apologize about because the other day in an episode, I, was saying nickel manganese cobalt. So embarrassing, but anyway, Rogers also says that Panasonic already with the twenty one, seventy cells has improved energy density by more than five percent, and while they declined to link the further twenty percent increase to Tesla's future vehicles, they did say that in September, they will start converting lions at gigafactory Nevada quote as. As a prepares to further boost the energy density of the cells Takemoto set and quote. So overall I think pretty exciting information here though a bit limited in terms of what we actually can learn from it. We don't know if the energy density here for his two volume metric or gravel metric, and we also don't really know if that increase in energy density will coincide with a reduction in cost as well. Though presumably, it would because if you make more energy dense battery cells you need. Need fewer battery cells to actually power the thing that you were trying to power with those batteries. So I think presumably cost beneficial as well, and unlikely that Panasonic would be pushing for something if there was not eventually going to be a cost benefit from it or at least be affordable enough to have a viable use case at scale I think it's also exciting that they have a cobalt free version in the works for two to three years from now, but the twenty percent energy density. Density improvement is a five year goal. So presumably, that twenty percent increase would be after extracting out all the cobalt from the process thinking about that twenty percent increase in energy density though over five years from compound annual growth rate perspective, that's three point, seven percent per year, which I think does sound about right looking at the historical progress. If we look at the Model S. from two, thousand, twelve to two, thousand, twenty, the range on the Model S. increased from two, hundred, sixty, five miles. Miles EPA all the way up to four hundred and two miles. So that's a five point, three percent compound annual growth rate in the available range. But of course, not all of that is attributable to the energy density of the battery cell. There's a lot of efficiencies within the powertrain and even things like wheels and tires that are contributing to that rate. So the improvement in energy density is likely below that though again, really it's improvement in energy density per cost. That is most important. Important looking forward, if that twenty percent improvement was applied to the range on the model three today and the Monterey today that would put the model three range at about three, hundred, eighty, six miles up from three, hundred, twenty, two miles if it were just a straight twenty percent increase and then similarly for the Mata, why it would go from three, hundred, sixty, miles, two, hundred and seventy nine. But again, that's just the increase from the battery cells that assumes no other progress throughout the rest. Rest of the powertrain or the battery pack or innovations that allow for reduction in weight of the vehicle, things like that. That will also, of course, happen over time. The other option that energy density improvements allow for is obviously to put the same amount of energy in less space or with less weight, which would improve the vehicle's efficiency. So even with the same energy, call it seventy, five kilowatt hours, the vehicle would travel farther because of that increased energy density and may be the range. Range go up to three, thirty or three forty with the same energy capacity. The overall point here is that better improvements are going to keep happening. Those improvements are going to open up a lot of different options for electric vehicle makers and Tesla's best positioned to capitalize on the Trent.

Which outfit she was wearing and whether or not they were her only semi clean clothes remaining? She wore a corset with a low cut blouse and fashionable ankle boots. It's a feathered hat sat on her neatly combed hair moments later. Mata Hari stood in front of twelve nervous young soldiers. She refused to be tied to a stake. And face them without a blindfold. She stood proud even blowing a kiss to the the priest in attendance. A sergeant major observing the scene remarked supposedly by God. This lady knows how to die by then. The firing started lot of Hari's bodies staggered at the impact before she sank to her knees. He's with her head still held up. She gazed at her murderers before finally falling backward to the ground. Mata Hari has been known as the greatest woman spy of the century. A siren who seduced men while passing information that that led to her death but Mata Hari likely never committed espionage that she was condemned for the truth was she established just her way of life in a world that was very different from wartime France and she refused to feel guilty about the woman she'd become in those freer years. There's she reveled in her unabashed femininity and sexuality but she had no illusions about the fact that not everyone saw I saw her freedom in a positive light being. Mata Hari was always a fight as she once said. I am a woman woman who enjoys herself very much. Sometimes I lose. Sometimes I win.

She was after all just an emotional woman though. Mata Hari wasn't necessarily adapted. The gadget to spy might employ her skill at manipulation was extremely extremely effective. Bond call became more comfortable with her as the conversation progressed and as Mata Hari relaxed on his Shays he let some sensitive information slip. He admitted that a German submarine was embarking the French controlled zone of Morocco. The plans were taken up all of his time. Mata Hari finally had the information she needed. As soon as she left Von Calls home she wrote Toledo and told him about the Intel she'd uncovered before she received a response. She met a man named Colonel Joseph Dunn John Vena he was ambassador of the French embassy in Madrid. French ambassador would be useful to her. In ensuring that the doe received her communications indications especially considering she refused to use invisible ink and so she quietly told him the information she gleaned from von Uncall- dawn Vena was intrigued. He encouraged Mata Hari to get more information and conveniently a few days. After the French wrenched on Vena left for Paris in late December nineteen sixteen. The German von call requested an audience. Bon Call Ushered Mata Hari across crosses foyer insisting she come into the light then he leaned forward and told her he knew what she done. Germany had intercepted French radio messages. That asked where officers were landing in Morocco. Mata Hari tried to conceal L. Her terror. She suggested another source was to blame before cautiously asking how he knew the content of encrypted French messages is but von call rather than arresting her replied with a piece of valuable information. The Germans had broken the key he to French transmissions then he sent her on her way with a parting gift of cash. Mata Hari was bewildered. What game was von call playing accusing her of spying on him? And then in in the next sentence handing over intelligence and money but she was also elated on the knowledge that the Germans could read France's his coded radio messages would be extremely valuable to the French military. Surely you would get her paycheck from the doe and secure your her future with Vadym her suspicions about von calls actions however were more than warranted as von call revealed to Mata Hari the Germans could now read French code and one of the first things they learned by cracking encrypted. French messages was that the French had already broken their German code earlier in Nineteen sixteen curiously around this time. The Germans sent several messages in that old broken code code. They now knew the French could read. The French intercepted did and recorded them. The messages were about Mata Hari or agent h twenty one and were signed by von on. Call they referenced him. Paying her for services against France. These appeared to be damning evidence that Mata Hari was German agent but the fact that they were written in a code that Germany new France could break break suggests that they were not what they seemed. Considering the fact that Germany could read French Code von call may have discovered that the French suspected Mata Hari was a German agent from their hit would have been a classic espionage choice to try convincing the French. She went to the Dutch consul to seek protection but Mata Hari was seen as just another hysterical woman. She was sent away. Hey you brought tidings of doom. When he visited a few weeks later in mid-january rumors had reached his superiors about Mata Hari's involvement with the enemy and they had ordered him to keep from associating with her? She went about making travel plans with their newly acquired cash. She was going back to Paris..

War One in this episode. We'll explore how Mata Hari went from celebrated dancer to espionage scapegoat and eventually realized that there were some situations. She couldn't charm her way out of even as a little girl. Margarita Gary Trudeau's Zella who would eventually be known as Mata Hari never failed to attract attention born on August seventh. Eighteen seventy six to a wealthy hat maker. She enjoyed the spotlight of her father's affections and inherited his love of high brow style to advertise his shot. He dressed his daughter in extravagant clothing and in styles that differed from her more conservative classmates on not that she needed fashion to help her in standing out. I thought all women who ran away from their her husband's went to Paris. It was time to reinvent herself as a Parisian model by the spring of nineteen o four however twenty eight year old in greet was feeling less optimistic about her future. It had been a a difficult year in Paris. What little money she'd had from her father was gone and she hadn't been able to get any modeling work she simply didn't have of anything? The beautiful pert. Little French models weren't already providing except her dark past. She thought bitterly. But then the Hi dea came to her life in the indies. Hadn't been kind to her. She faced the audience and said my dance. Chance is a sacred poem. The temple in which I dance can be vague or faithfully reproduced. As here today for I I am the temple. Then she danced. She charmingly told a different tale about her origins. Each time he was interviewed by the press. No one knew with certainty who she was or where she came from which further added to her mystique her intention was to give more power to a burgeoning persona. Ah but she was also learning these subtle art of manipulation according to former former CIA operative JC Carlson. A huge part of successful spying is manipulation and huge part of effective manipulation is is understanding which behaviors are rewarded. Mata Haris ever changing story was an education in just that she was testing her audience. Dance and getting a sense of who they wanted her to be. She was also adept at another of Carlson's crucial spy skills gaining access to decision makers on this proved easy from Mata Hari who truly loved military men. She wants said Yes yes. I have had many lovers but it is the beautiful soldiers brave always ready for battle and while waiting always sweet ungallant for me. The officer forms a race apart the many powerful lovers Mata Hari took and she traveled around Europe up. Dancing have given her FEM fatale reputation but Mata Hari also viewed these relationships as an aspect of her job besotted added men would pay for her rent meals and outfit her in the luxurious clothes that she loved. "Now, we can argue that there's there's better or worse ways to do that. And I think that's that. That argument is is playing out. But I think. You know, the answer is not in my view to grow these big Mata crush because it will you know, there's there's a push now for this. You know, there's there's two things going on. There is you know, we're gonna eat these fake meats that are made out of soybeans or pea protein or week Luton. And I think that's a disaster for human health. I think no one should beating that garbage. I mean this beyond meat in my view is beyond stupid. You know? I mean that has what that's what I've said, you know, but I mean, but then, but then people say, well what let's go to this year, this lab grown synthetic meet stuff. And so I think there are some problems with that as well. And I think maybe, you know, maybe it turns out, it's fine. And that may be a solution for some people. I think there's a lot of people that are not going to do it because they're worried about it. But I think there's significant concerns around that industry as well. I mean, right now, you know, the medium that they have to grow these cells in his bowl. I'd feel ceremony. So they have to kill a pregnant cow harvested fetus, you know, get the blood continue to do that over and over again to grow these able so as not free of any animal, death and all right? No. But you know, assuming they get past that maybe they'll develop a serum that they can do right now they have to continue to soak these things in an antibiotic medium. So you guys are worried about antibiotics these things are continuously soaked antibiotics to keep the bible, they're giving all kinds of growth promoting factors which we aren't sure how they impact the human human physiology yet. So we don't know about that. There's also you'll this sort of how do we keep these cells as we have these invincib- immortal lines in that's the same thing that you would tumor cells. So they had these tumors that have been breast cancer cells have been around since the nineteen sixties keep growing the rain over and over again. So the question is is there a problem with those cells and eating those types of things we don't know the answer to that yet. And so, you know, there, you know, there's again the other thing is they need amino acids to produce protein unites a cow. We'll take you know, they'll much on some grass, which you, and I can't eat the munch on, you know, most of that they'll turn that inedible stuff at inability to Bill protein into food that we can actually eat now. Now too. Get those amino acids, they have to harvested from some sort of plant source in typically what they likely will use are things like peas or soybeans..

"But she didn't realize how dangerous things were about to get for her. She arrived back in Paris on January third nineteen, seventeen. She I tried to find out how Maslov was faring in the battle of verdone, not realizing that the battle was over and that there had been no Russian troops involved. Next, she tried to find done Vena at his hotel, expecting both to deliver information to him and to sleep with him. But he was nowhere to be found. She searched and searched for him until she located him at the train station. She demanded to know. If he had passed information on to do, and he confided that he lied about the state of their relationship saying that he and Mata Hari were not lovers. He had intended to abandon her to her fate in Paris, Mata Hari then spent the next few days trying to meet with the do in the disease and bureau, but she couldn't seem to get an audience with him. When they finally met. He hadn't heard any of the information she had tried to pass to him through done Vena, or he simply denied having heard it. She grew frustrated with the dues behavior towards her and tried to return to her normal life. She expected to see Maoz lav on January eighth, but he didn't show up. She was worried that something had happened to him. Perhaps she started to suspect her letters weren't getting through them. She asked the Dutch embassy for protection on the twelfth, but they didn't seem to take her concerns seriously around this time. She began to try to seriously avoid the two French officers who tailed her becoming paranoid of. Men following her Mata Hari wrote again to the do asking for payment for her work so that she could leave Paris and be reunited with Maslov. She was hurting for cash forced to downsize her accommodations twice, and she received the usual cash allowance from vendor Capella in through the Dutch consulate. But with a warning that he wouldn't continue to pay for an absentee mistress over the next month, she continued to entertain lovers who were expected to gift her money afterwards in order to keep her lifestyle Maslov had a brief leave of service and was able to visit, but not for long Mata. Hari tried to obtain her papers to go back to the Hague but wasn't able to do so likely because of another set of papers being prepared on her behalf. Her arrest warrant signed on February tenth nineteen, seventeen. She was arrested three days later at her hotel room on various charges of espionage and treason against France, most of which could be. Linked back to work. She believed she was doing on behalf of the do Mata. Hari was brought to the office of Pierre Bouchard on an investigator who questioned her about the accusations on the arrest, warrant. She denied everything. And at the end stood up to leave Bouche Don informed her that she would be going to prison. She was put in the sun Lazar women's prison, which mostly housed sex workers. It was disgusting prison full of pest infestations and little in the way of sanitation Mata Hari spent her first night in jail in a padded cell on suicide. Watch like the rest of the newcomers over the course of the next few months. Mata Hari seemed convinced that this was all a mistake. She would write letters to Bouche Don and till the do asking them to correct her file. She had only ever done what the dizzy 'em bureau had asked of her Bouche or Don continued to call Mata Hari to his office for interviews, attempting to wear her down and get her to confess. Yes, he threw her relationships with various Germans in the prewar years back in her face, but she continued to deny any wrongdoing. Meanwhile, his men were searching her apartment and her Bank accounts to try to find proof of wrongdoing. They questioned as many of her lovers as they could locate who all said that she was lovely and hadn't spoken to them about the war. Bouche Don wasn't able to find anything to directly link Mata Hari to treasonous espionage. They continued to intercept MAs lofts letters to Mata Hari and her letters to him. He had to undergo surgery to his throat from the fos gene gas attack, followed by about of diptheria, and he hoped to get some sympathy from her. But he never heard back and wrongly assumed that her affection for him had waned the condition of the prison as well as her enforced. Solitude, we're starting to have a big effect on Mata Haris constitution. She lost a lot of weight. She began to cough up blood. She wasn't given clean clothes or regular showers, and she would start crying at the drop of a hat. The human -nology project states that incarcerated women were fifty percent more likely to suffer depression than women not imprisoned, presenting symptoms of hopelessness, persistent sadness, changes in tight and loss of interest in energy, which sounds a lot like what Mata Hari was going through at this point. And then on April twenty. First, la- do provided Bouche Don with some previously undisclosed information, a series of fourteen telegrams intercepted from German communications. The Duke claimed that in nineteen sixteen while Mata Hari was in Spain meeting with Cali. He asked the French radio station in the Eiffel tower to start listening in on communications between Berlin and Madrid, incriminating messages about a spy nicknamed h two one came through and they were very obviously about Mata Hari. The spy h. two ones. Movements and contacts were the same as Mata Haris making it clear that they were probably the same person, but these messages weren't delivered in the second German code. They were delivered in the first code, the one that the Germans knew the French had broken back in nineteen fourteen. Why would they want to share this information about their spy on a communication line? They knew wasn't secure. Maybe it was because they wanted the French to know as colleague grew to suspect that Mata Hari was a French agent in their last meeting. Perhaps they wanted her to get in trouble with the French revenge for Mata Hari taking their money without doing any spy work in return. Maybe the Germans were trying to distract the French with a low level spy while they're higher level. Spies continued their work in peace or maybe lewd. Oof fabricated the messages in April of nineteen seventeen. Why else would he not have shared them with Bouchard don't immediately in any case Latouche. Shared them with our Don without revealing that they had come in through that first broken German code. Now that he had some semblance of proof Bouche Don questioned Mata Hari about these messages and their content on may first nineteen. Seventeen Mata Hari continued to deny the accusations and mentioned that there had been rumors of another German spy aboard her ship to the Netherlands. She had been the wife of a man who was rumored to be spying for England. Perhaps this was the spy referred to in the messages. Bouche Don looked into it and found out that there had in fact been a German spy arrested in England from that ship. But that didn't mean he believed Mata Hari was innocent. So he continued to let her rot in prison. She felt as though she was slowly going mad until she wrote to Boucher gone on may twenty. First quote, I have decided today to tell you the truth. If I have not told everything before it was because of certain doubts which I will explain. And quote, that's when she finally told Bouchard jaw about her meeting with German spymaster Cromer where she accepted, twenty thousand francs to spy for Germany. Again, she insisted that it was for her fur's that she only wanted the money and had no intention of spying and that she hadn't mentioned it because she knew how it looked. But since she didn't mention it right away, it sure seemed like she had something to hide, how much credence can we give her? I didn't do anything spiel. She also mentioned that after the do had abandoned her in Spain should try to give collie some useless information enough that he might pay her for her trouble. She didn't give him any important information because she didn't have any all she had was gossip. But for Bouche our Don that was enough for her to be guilty. He continued to question her trying to find out what she had done for Cromer to get that twenty thousand francs, but she was intractable. She insisted that. She had done nothing though at this point. No one believed that she continued to insist that she was innocent during her trial, which began July twenty fourth nineteen. Seventeen her case was heard at the palace of Justice. Mata Hari work closed that had been selected for her including a low cut blouse and a hat. Reminiscent of those worn by soldiers at the front on a foreign woman's body. It came across as a mockery of everything. Ideal French wartime woman should be, and France had just lost an enormous battle at Shimon dedom- a few months earlier with a loss of nearly two hundred thousand men after which the French troops mutinied against their commanders, things were under control again in July nineteen, seventeen, but just barely wouldn't. It have been nice than to have someone other than the French military leaders to blame for the defeat. Mata Hari was charged with eight counts of espionage with evidence presented for. And against some of her lovers. Like on re democracy, spoke passionately on her behalf testifying that they had never spoken about matters of war. Others like Vladimir demise lawf- refused to show for the trial. Instead, his deposition was read aloud where he denied having loved her after less than an hour of deliberation. The seven judges voted either unanimously or near unanimously on every count Mata Hari they believed had betrayed France, and the punishment was death. She and her lawyer attempted to take the case up the chain of appeals. But it only took a few months before they had exhausted their options. The order for her execution came on October fourteenth, nineteen, seventeen that night according to fem fatal, Mata Haris, doctor and nurses. Her prison asked her to dance for them. It was a kindness to allow her to relive her best days her best self. The doctor gave her something to help her sleep. That night. She was woken before dawn on October fifteenth, nineteen, seventeen, and informed that she was being taken to a firing squad. She refused the customary blindfold choosing instead to look at the soldiers as they raised their guns and fired. No

"Again. Then she called upon a former lover baron, Edward villain. Vendor cappella n- to take her as mistress. Once again by Tober he had purchased a new house for her in the Hague for the rest of nineteen. Fourteen Mata Hari flitted through society parties and decorated her new home. She wrote once again to Rudolph during her time in the Hague petitioning to see sixteen year old non again, non was just starting her training to become a teacher as Mata Hari had done so many years earlier, Rudolph refused Mata Hari. Request. She dentist a little in nineteen fifteen, and she moved into her newly renovated and furnished home that August bills came due for clothes furnishings and hotel rooms, but she didn't pay them all in all the first eight months or so of nineteen. Fifteen were dull compared to what Matahari was used to, but that autumn brought an intriguing visitor with an equally intriguing proposal from here on out some of the details regarding the facts of Mata Haris life get a bit complicated. There's the official French government version of events, the one that led to her being sentenced to death as a spy, and there's Mata hari's own version of events which she related during her deposition. There's no way to know which version is true. So we're going to relate both versions to you to keep it simple. I'm going to stick to the French government's account while Vanessa tackles Mata Haris account in both versions of the story. Mata Hari received a visit from Amsterdam's German Council. Karl Kromer Kromer asked if she would be interested in becoming a spy for Germany offering her twenty thousand francs for her trouble. In both versions, she agreed Cromer than gave her a few bottles containing invisible ink as well as a codename h. two one. So why agree to spy for Germany? Well, it might have something to do with the same reasons why Mata Hari danced in the psychology of espionage, Dr Ursula 'em wilder writes, quote, spies frequently have pathological personality features that pave the way to espionage, such as thrill, seeking a sense of entitlement, or a desire for power and control and quote, we know that Mata Hari was bored in the Hague that she felt as though she deserved to have a luxurious lifestyle she couldn't afford and that she was no longer really in control of her career. The French government said that this was when Mata Hari was sent off to train as a spy in Cologne. For six weeks. She was told to send two copies of her reports at every turn. One, two major Ropel induced Dorf and one two major Arnold Colli in Madrid. Mata Hari on the other hand claimed that she had no intention of ever spying for Germany. She wanted recompense for the expensive furs and jewelry as well as all the money that she had to leave behind in Berlin at the start of the war, this twenty thousand francs about covered those expenses, meaning she felt no obligation to do anything further for that money. She poured the invisible ink out before tossing the bottles. She said she never wrote Cromer with any reports of any kind. She danced in the Hague in December of nineteen fifteen before deciding that it was time to return to Paris to pack up her home there. She wouldn't be able to go through any territory occupied by Germany. So she took a ship that stopped in England on the way to Paris. She along with the other passengers aboard, the ship was questioned by the. Forties to determine her purpose for traveling. We don't know what it could have been, but something about Mata Hari made the police suspicious of her. They called in m I five Britain's domestic counter intelligence agency to question her further. Mata Hari gives slightly different accounts to the police than she did the m I five to the police. She said that she was traveling to close up her house in France to take up with her lover in the Hague to 'em. I five. She said she was selling some of the things in her French home and that she was hoping to book some contracts while they're these two accounts don't directly contradict each other. They could both be true. It's possible. She was hoping to go to France and sell the things in her house, followed by the house itself and dance a bit while she was there before heading back to the Hague to be with baron Vander Capella on, but the British didn't see it that way. The report read quote, although she was thoroughly searched and nothing incriminating found Ma. Mehari is regarded by police and military to be not above suspicion, and her subsequent movements should be watched and quote, they sent a copy of this report to French intelligence and decided that Mata Hari would not be allowed entry to Great Britain during the war. No. Why would they believe Mata Hari was so suspicious. There are a few possibilities. It's possible that Mata Hari didn't wanna talk about her lover with the lower class policemen, but was comfortable sharing that information with the higher class intelligence agent. It's possible that Mata Hari actually was on some sort of mission. She could have been reporting back on mostly trivial happenings around Paris as it doesn't seem likely that she would have been entrusted with any sort of military secrets. It's also possible that Mata Hari was victim of the morals of the day as Mary w. Craig relates in tangled web quote within the psychology of the day, a woman who claimed to like sex and had multiple lovers had. To be depraved. The woman who acted in a depraved manner who liked sex was therefore depraved and degenerate would act in other criminal ways such as betraying their country and quote and Mata Hari was unabashedly a woman who liked sex and therefore suspect whatever the reason Mata Hari was just happy to be back in Paris if only briefly, she rekindled too old romances. One with unruly democracy. Now, a high ranking member of the French legation to the Hague and the other with the marquee before a Belgian officer after awhile, spent catching up with her lovers. She returned to the Hague by travelling through Spain where she picked up yet. Another lover Spanish Senator Amelio's June. We she was back in the Hague by early nineteen sixteen and became quickly bored with life there. Again, she once again, missed Paris, which she considered to be a real home though. Perhaps she wouldn't have felt his board had she known that she was. Investigated by the British, they concluded that should she return to England for any reason Mata Hari ought to be sent to Scotland Yard for interrogation. She got a new Dutch passport that may and decided to travel back to Paris, either on the orders of her handlers or because she was oblivious to how dangerous it was to be a foreign element during the war. She was able to obtain a visa to reenter Paris, but wasn't allowed to stop in Britain on her way. Instead, she decided to go by boat to Spain then by train to France, but she was rebuffed at the border. The British had sent a copy of their earlier conclusions and suspicions to the French, their allies who are now treating Mata Hari with suspicion themselves. She tried again the next day, dropping the name of a former lover in a powerful position in the French government and was allowed to cross into France. It didn't take her long to realize that two inspectors were following her around. Charlie and Monja as they were known. We're tasked with keeping tabs on the infamous starlet that meant keeping an eye on her fares in lovers, opening her male and questioning everyone who came in contact with her. She complained about them as early as June twenty-first nineteen. Sixteen to a bellhop at her hotel over the course of that summer, tar lay Monja would have observed Mata Haris dalliances with two soldiers. One was twenty six year old. Second Lieutenant, John Lor who is smitten with Mata Hari from the moment he saw her. They spend a lot of time together in late July and early August. Even though a was warned by a superior officer to stop seeing her. He was the man Mata Hari approached on July twenty seventh about visiting the healing waters at Battelle, a spa town near the front. She asked him to recommend a physician who would write her a prescription to travel to vitelle though allure testified that he didn't realize. He was sick. Perhaps she had received instructions from her handler to go near the front to see what she could learn. She could have also been having difficulty with her syphilis and believed the water's at vitelle would help or perhaps allures testimony given during Mata Hari is later trial was an attempt to cover for how close he and she had really been what young man with a bright career ahead of him wants to be associated with the spy. Regardless allure said he'd send her where she needed to go referring her to French intelligence, the disease bureau. She said her need to go to vitelle was very urgent, but something kept her in Paris for another few days. July twenty ninth was the day. She met twenty one year old. Vladimir Damasio off the Russian soldier. She would grow to love more than any other man in her life. They spent a couple of days in each other's arms before she finally went down to the bureau. That's where she met George, la- do the head of the dozen bureau and the man who would bring everything crashing down mehari. He had ordered lay and Monja to tail Mata Hari. He already believed that she was a spy for Germany. He and Mata Hari both later gave very different testimony about what went down that day. She claimed that she asked him if she could go to Tel and said that he casually brought up that she would make a good spy for the French Ledoux. However, always said that it was Mata Hari who I mentioned spying after she correctly. Pinpointed that la- do was the reason she had been followed all these months. He brought up that he suspected her as a spy for the Germans, but that he would happily bring her over to spy for the French side. That seems a bit foolish. There's that saying about keeping your friends close and your enemies closer if he thought she was a German spy, then it's reasonable to assume that he was trying to keep tabs on her by bringing her into the fold as a French agent. He could more easily do that and with her express permission to both accounts end with mud Hari considering the offer, but not accepting the next few days were full of time with her new love Maslov, and she promised to do her best to meet him in vitelle after he and his regimen returned from the war. She continued to go to the dizzy 'em bureau as well as two other nearby agencies to try and nail down her trip a few days after her fortieth birthday Mata Hari asked her dear friend and longtime lover on Rita Margherita about the proposal from LA due on August eighteenth nineteen. Sixteen wondering whether it would be worth the trouble. He told her that espionage was dangerous, but that he believed she could do it and do good for France. So on August twenty first, she went back to do and agreed to spy for him. If he would grant her permission to go to tell that is he agreed she was to take her leave in vitelle and await instruction from. Do there. She then asked if she could send Maslov an expedited telegram. She hadn't heard from him since August, fourth and was growing worried, la- do who had intercepted all of her letters from Maslov, rejected her request. She left for vitelle by train on September first and was reunited with her Maslov on September third, but not everything was coming up roses for these lovebirds. Maslov had just survived a vicious fos. Gene gas-attack. He wore a bandage over his now. Sightless left eye and made it clear that he was in danger of going blind. But Mata Hari told him that she didn't care quote, I will never leave you. She said, and I will be to you always the same woman and quote, then Maslum Astor to marry him. She said, yes, recognizing that she would have to take care of him, especially if he were to go fully blind Maslov was the only man who she ever decided to support financial. In this way, as opposed to the many men. She expected to support her in the psychology of espionage. Dr Ursula 'em wilder writes that quote, at the time of spy initiates the espionage, it appears a logical decision to solve a problem or the only option available to escape a desperate or painful situation and quote, if Mata Hari married Maslov, she would likely lose the support of her current patrons. And she knew that her dancing years were essentially behind her that meant that she would need a new way of making money. Perhaps by spying for France, she would be able to provide for her young Russian soldier. So for the first time, Mata Hari decided to take this whole spy business seriously. And in just over a year, she would be dead because of it.
