"He doesn't win it. Lions stealers. All right, so this was a tie. This was just unsatisfactory in so many ways. No Ben Roethlisberger, he ends up in COVID protocol. So mason Rudolph ends up getting the start here for the Steelers. It was just bad game between bad teams. The one thing I was kind of hopeful for and I've talked about this multiple times here was this was another opportunity for the Steelers against the team that they can pass protect against. Just like Monday night, they could keep their quarterback clean against that bears pass rush minus Khalil Mack, and they just don't do it. They just don't go downfield. They went downfield a couple times early. They got a long pass interference penalty, mason Rudolph isn't a great downfield passer. They were missing some weapons, but still, it just felt like a week they could take a couple of shots and they didn't. It's just the same thing they keep on trotting out every week. And I don't know, I guess I have to learn to live with that at this point. Yeah, I still don't understand why mason Rudolph is the option here. Like if you were a backup quarterback strategically plotting where you would want to go in order to get snaps at some point this season, the Steelers had to be up there on your list of potential ways to crack the lineup here. But mason, I mean, the first interception was really bad. You know, just sort of a classic like almost like high school miscommunication overthrow. I think they benefited somewhat from some pass interference stuff down the field just because the lines were biting kneecaps while they were trying to go deep, but it was, you know, this is, you know, I don't know why this is the option. The Steelers should have something better in place right now. It should look way better than this. You should not be tying the Lions at this point with the division in the ballots. Yeah, I mean, both of these teams are clearly going to be in the quarterback market in 2022 for different reasons. I think the lines were just going to give Jared Goff a try this year and see if it worked out. He came as part of the Matthew Stafford trade. But I think we've seen enough at this point that he hasn't worked out..

"They're like ah. Let's just ignore it. It'll figure itself out no it won't. You have to find a way to win with Big Ben playing badly. Or replace Big Ben. So that's why they're losing. Management in Pittsburgh did not decide to solve the big bend problem. They're like, let's bring them back for one final year. Like, oh. Okay, you guys got sentimental. And I get it. He's a Hall of Fame quarterback is one of two super bowls, fair enough. But they didn't even trade for Gardner to meet you. They weren't like, let's just get a backup quarterback in case. There's no plan for after Big Ben and Pittsburgh. And they had plenty of warning, and they had plenty of opportunities to solve that problem and they didn't do it. If it were me, I'd have a quarterback waiting for after Big Ben. Maybe that's Duane Haskins, although I don't think so he doesn't even dress down for games. "Solid performance on friday night the next winter this lab. This mason rudolph what was his stat line. He didn't even play. How does he be a winner. You say jeff did you watch the game mason. Rudolph didn't play. I did watch the game. But what i saw was a dwayne haskins played so poorly played so poorly. And yes his stats. And we'll get to duane and a little bit. He played poorly enough. That in my opinion mason rudolph just by default got bumped to qb to if there was a if there was a competition and as a giant. If i'm not saying there was. I'm not even saying the key to job was even open for graphic up for the taking but so if it was there's no doubt about it mason. Rudolph his to wayne housings can be three at least right now and before we go any further does it even matter does it matter right now. No it doesn't i mean. I think it's pretty clear. Joshua dobbs is not going to make the team. He's injured by the way but he's not going to make the team that the top three will does it matter whose two and three on the depth chart not to me not unless number seven ben rothlisberger down in which case the steelers have bigger issues. Let's move on the other winner. James peer his stat. Line four tackles. Three solo tackles and even had a tackle for loss. James beer if he showed me one thing on friday night his ability to tackle. I was very hesitant. Read the reports in the reviews and the scouting reports and it was really with loud. Milk was this guy's a project. Tackle one tackle for loss of sack in a quarterback hit so as allowed or milk. He's had a great preseason. I think he showed a lot of promise. I duane haskins had to do it had to put in their finished. His nine of sixteen for one hundred eight yards a six point. Eight average had one touchdown. One interception wasn't sacked at all. Seventy one point nine rating if he hadn't have been ray reinserted into the lineup. Because remember dobbs took over in the third quarter and then he got hurt hurt. Got a lot of talk on her steelers preview show before the game on thursday night and he deserves a chance and i get that but at the same time he also brought no he provided nothing as a receiver and so in the nfl anymore. You don't have return guys just return guys period. And so when i think about that i think about matthew sexton. I wrote an article on saturday. I think saturday and it was about how the steelers are not going to base any players future with the team off of one game. And i use matthew sexton's As an example he had been the team's best returner up until friday night he had big returns on the punt game in most likely he understood that he has to make a play. He's going to have to return a kick and he can't waste an opportunity and so he probably i guarantee if you ask them. Hey go back and look at those two fumbles would you have always would you overturn those if it was just a regular game and you had a job. And you didn't have to worry about impressing anyone. I guarantee he probably would have said what a fair caught build of them. I would've just fair caught on. We've got in our possession but instead he's trying to make a play and he takes his out of the ball he fumbles that we know the story but i think matthew saxton although he's talented it just it was an ugly look and we knew it was coming and he ends up getting cut on saturday. "He is a playmaker is the definition of a playmaker. I said this in the post game show. I'll repeat it here. Every time he touches the football you get the feeling like something exciting is going to happen. He is a player. They can make a two yard gain. Make you sit up in your seat because we my break. Probably since lady on bell played and he's different than lady on bell they are similar in style. they're similar family know about style. Let me let me take that back. They're similar in size. They are similar with speed. But they are not necessarily when you think about a stylistic approach not necessarily the same nagae harris is not the route runner. The bell was he has good hands. He can definitely work in space. I feel like najji. Harris is a better runner in between the tackles. He's tougher to bring down than bell. Bell was at patient. Wait wait wait find your whole go But still nausea harris He's gonna be his own player. He's not trying to be compared to lady on bell and he looks like a playmaker and that's what the steelers needed at the running back position nothing against james connor or anyone else. So maybe someone that's coming back from injury or maybe someone that didn't get a lot of playing time in that first game. He's looking for them to eliminate pre-snap injuries having penalty free games in dealing with motions and shifts especially on offense much better in those that have already had a game under their belt. He's looking for players to have an elevation in their play So we're talking about players like he's talking about essentially having awareness inequality about their play growth inconsistency more fluid in faster and he said it's just another this upcoming games just another first game scenario based on the fact that this is the first preseason game for the philadelphia eagles but again tomlin reiterated. "So i think there really is a competition out whether or not it's for the qb to spot or qb three eight. I think that's Remains to be seen. The thing that gets me. I'm i was excited to see what dwayne haskins could do. He loves cautious with the football. Put it that way. He did not want to take the risk. You could see a couple of times. He was looking down the field down the middle of the field. And you just don't wanna make that bad play and put yourself in a hole in this competition. I get it but at some point and this is just my. This is always been my thing and you go back to eighteen. Landry jones will play some in then he would rotate between rudolph and dobbs as to. Who would get in next. I wanna see dwayne haskins. Actually get a look with some of those better players mason. Rudolph was throwing passes to deontay johnson. James washington although he didn't connect chase capable and then when dwayne haskins gets into the game. Who's the throwing passes to matthew sexton. Kevin raider and i don't know rigo was bussey bussey forever. It's it's not the same not dimension. The offensive line is different. If this is a genuine competition in my opinion you're gonna see tomlin. Say do what i just said. In that is we need to give haskins and opportunity to show what he can do with better players. The question i have for you necks is would it look any different. In your opinion if haskins did get a chance better players obviously. "Last Thursday. I sat down with Browns Defensive End myles Garrett in Los Angeles one day after he was reinstated into the NFL. The interview which aired on outside. "Is additional information on me myles Garrett Mason Rudolph incident that occurred last Thursday and Thursday night football and Josefina. I'll ask you right now just to add what we learned today. Yeah sources telling me and Adam Schefter that myles Garrett made as part of his defense during the appeal hearing yesterday Per what he included in his defense that Mason Rudolph allegedly used a racial slur during the incident. Allegation is an assault on Mason's integrity which is far worse than the physical assault witnessed on Thursday. This is reckless shameful. We've got myles Garrett alleging that Mason Rudolph said something to him a racial slur that preceded that fight on Thursday night and we have Mason Rudolph strongly deny at least as attorney strongly strongly denying it and ruby up to the NFL to sort through this to determine what is real and what is not Adam Schefter. Adam report he would have spoken again today. It appears unlikely. But here is what Mason Rudolph said yesterday definitely didn't say anything escalated it but like I said I do a better job. The Information Shen this after noon is that during his defenses appellate hearing myles Garrett alleging Mason Rudolph used a racial slur that precipitated. What happened in that incident Thursday night? Let me just ask it. Simply if that is the case does it change in your mind anything that transpired after the fact no I still think regardless of what was said to you or regardless of you know what said racial slur was said. You still have to conduct yourself in a way that is conducive to others. Yes and not swinging a helmet isn't the way you combat that right swinging a helmet in the heat of the battle isn't the way you combat someone giving you a racial slur in that moment now how I can see where he would take it to that measure. I can understand that but this is the right thing to do. No so it's unfortunate. Obviously that that you know were here at this point in this in in this whole scenario are feels like it's just dragging on and on and on now But if there's racial so did occur. It's tough because there's one wins word against another. There's nobody else that's confirming coming. This is just someone saying it and it's just tough to kind of wrap your mind around all of this because of everything that's transpired up until this point would vick was saying the swinging over helmet and hitting somebody else in the head with that. I think that's where the the biggest issue was in the big shock factor that everyone saw that night. was somebody getting hit with a helmet right right if the helmet was never swung. There isn't the suspension for the rest of the season. I think that's it's pretty simple. So the whole racial thing yes. That's it's a very serious allegation and it's a serious thing thing but at the end of the day it's swinging a helmet at the violence of that is the reason that that he is suspended for length of time that he's suspended for for and just to be clear here one more time. The facts are simply these myles. Garrett has alleged that Mason Rudolph used a racial Slur Mason Rudolph via the steelers and his representation tation has vehemently denied that. And that's really where we stand myles. Garrett has been suspended indefinitely the very least the remainder of the regular season we. I do not know yet the outcome of that appellate hearing and. That's not the only thing that was stated you guys talked about yesterday. The precedent that was mentioned with regards to the Antonio Smith with Vincent with Richie Incognito at instance. You know being different when you're talking about distinguishing whether helmet hit someone on the head and in one incident where that did not happen now when I was talking to sources last night about this trying to say you know well if it's not a complete apples to apples comparison you know. How do you necessarily bring that up? As part of Malls Garrett's defense offense and I was told well players have an expectation for somewhat similar disciplined with regards to somewhat similar instances in my retort back was I could see how the NFL would come back and say well especially now that we're in the age of the NFL putting an emphasis on ahead being hit that they could make that distinction in that. There is where the difference is now with regards to your question to you. Know them and you know how does that. Add to the context of the situation. This was a guy who in some ways is mild mannered. Heard if you can believe it and this was about as far as anything I would expect from myles Garrett based on the Guy I know what is it that brought him to this point. Well who has the guy you knew. What was it like when you met him? You know what's so interesting. I got to tell you the very first time I met him. He walks downstairs to sit in our interview chair. And he's wearing a queen shirt. He starts talking about Queen loves the group loves. The music is imploring me to go see the movie that kind of is myles Garrett in a nutshell he's exactly nothing like what you would expect from a guy who replays the way he does who appears the way he is his interest are so wide ranging. The person is far different from myles Garrett the football player what did you learn about his upbringing. I mean this is a guy who came from a family of athletes so much talent athletically. His mom was an all American American in track. His sister won a national championship. In track is brother played basketball for the nets. And I'm not just talking about average athletes but really really top level athletes another flight. You can do anything like do whatever makes you happy. But you're going to play some sports. He had sort of this. Love hate relationship that that was more hate when it comes to football playing football at that time even though really didn't want to but at that time I really didn't care for bod playing coming back are you can't play vic so played off of the linemen definitely not for me. I played the game and good at it but there was something missing was Kinda and that passion for the game so it was kind of hard to be okay amounts. His First Love was really basketball and at one point when he was in high school athletic director wanted him to play football. so He's a look. You can play basketball as long as you play football. So how does does he go from being a kid who wasn't even sure if he wanted to play the sport to being the number one overall draft pick and it's a really interesting story when he was around around his sophomore year coaches sat him down parents in the room and they sorta gave him an ultimatum. So you're GONNA put your heart in it or you're not what you're gonNA stop waste of People's time laid it all on the line or you can bring your hips almond bus. Sit Down and do I really want this. Do I really WANNA play football. I'm all my life and they say this the get it. No you could be one of the best. It could be the best player in the nation. This guy is a competitor like he wants. That's to win. And I think when he heard that that it could be the best in the country that SORTA gave him permission to sort of go after people to be the aggressive to be fiery on the field. It wasn't about hurting people. It was about showing people that he is the best that he can be the best best and from then on his play chains really started piling up sack numbers by midway through his senior year. "Did you see the end of the NFL game last night the Thursday night game turned into foot brawl and it may be the ugliest thing I've seen in sports in a long long time you Michael more people have seen the fight and then were actually watching the game since it's very true what we're talking about is this in the closing seconds of the game miles Garrett one of the Cleveland defenders took down Mason Rudolph the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers and as he was taking them down there were some words grabs Mason Rudolph's helmet rips it off of Rudolph's head and tries to beat him with it basically assault I don't know if you would call it a deadly weapon but it was certainly a soft with a blunt instrument that is made to be very hard okay Mason Rudolph thankfully did not have his skull split open he seemed to be okay but never the less there has been a big fallout from the league and a lot of questions about criminality a lot of questions about what's appropriate punishment for this kind of on field behavior that could have resulted in yet and at an opposing player with a critical injury and apparently no regard
