"Good morning to you joining us now. Tom Rossi. He is ABC. Seven W. J L, A reporter and we have some questions for him, Tom. Good morning. Thank you for joining us. Good morning to you. Mary invents how you guys doing? We're doing great. The chairman of the Falls Church School board said that they took a vote on Tuesday night. The revote the results of the vote being 7 to 0. And a Greg Anderson. The chair there said that they did this because they took a survey and they had a community discussion and his feeling and with the feeling of the other members of the school board, after all of those things was that the community wanted the names of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School and George Mason High School. Changed because those two names are offensive yet that's not what the community surveys said at all. Any idea how that boat went 7 to 0 when it has nothing to do with what the community said they wanted. Well, and I can tell you it certainly upset some people in the community, particularly those who participated in the survey. But, yes, the results they they change. They're going to change the names of two schools Thomas Jefferson Elementary and then George Mason High School. And they pulled people on both of them Parents, students staff and it was 56% in each case that said, Don't change the name but the number that said change. The name was pretty small by comparison. In the case of Thomas Jefferson, it was 20% George Mason was 23%. S so a lot of folks thought maybe they would keep the names, but instead, they unanimously voted to change it as you said, And they said, even though it was a relatively small percentage of folks who want to change the name, they said. You know, Essentially, it's upsetting anybody of defending anybody. They still wanted to change it because they didn't want folks going into a their examples that they gave was that if folks go into a building, knowing it's named after men who enslaved their ancestors. They could see why that would make some students uncomfortable, so they voted to change it. Obviously, a lot of people did disagree, however, some saying, Hey, these airmen who contributed a lot to this country, historically in a lot of the state of Virginia, historically, so we should keep the names but at the same time explained the legacy. Yeah, Plus their ideas laid the groundwork for the end of slavery. So this is all kind of insane, Tom. Um, I do wonder just as a basic matter. Why is it the school board focused on getting this students in Falls church back to school, and instead they're busy with these name changes right now. Well, that did come up on and one of the speakers. Actually, the first figure who spoke the other night wasn't talking about the name changed at all, but was talking about that very issue. But but At the same time. This is an issue as far as changing the names. Yeah, it started this summer after the George Floyd protesters. A few people have been trying to get in to change the names for years, but they never got any traction. Until after the George Floyd protests, and then all of a sudden it was taken very seriously and that led to Tuesday night they did vote to change them. Yeah. Do we know how much now this decision is going to cost the community? How much is this going to cost to change the names on all the equipment and come up with new names, And I mean it can't be cheap. It's got to be costing a lot of money It is in the biggest expense is actually the uniforms and the equipment for the athletic teams at George Mason High School that that's the big one that we were told. That's going to be about $96,000 to switch out all the uniforms. Uh, for the high school, they said they won't have to spend anything on extra sign because they're actually building a new high school pretty much on the same property there for the most part and in Falls church, So there'll be a new what we thought was going to be a new George Mason high school. But now it will be a new high school with a different name. That they send me a picture and friends of the basketball court, says Mustangs, which is their nickname on it, and that's going to stay. But they hadn't put George Mason on it yet because this issue what had come up, so they were gonna wait and see what they did with that for the elementary school, they said, it's gonna be about $13,500, mostly for new signs because they have toe Obviously take down the sign that, says Thomas Jefferson, and it's not just a ground level sign. You know, it's on the building above the main doors. Pretty amazing. So what you're telling us is that Falls church is about to spend over $100,000 to remove the founders of our country from schools rather than you know. I mean, this is an amazing story, actually. And in the midst of all of it, not getting the students back to school now, is this going to set off yet? Another Shane of name changes around our area. Do you first see other schools in Falls church or elsewhere? Deciding? Okay, Now's the time to change our name to let's get rid of our founder from the name of our school. That was actually our first question because when we heard about it, we in our newsroom thought, well, you know, there's a lot of other schools named for Thomas Jefferson and there's some others. Obviously, George Mason University is kind of a big deal. S so we called around because just a few miles away in Arlington, there's a Thomas Jefferson middle school s. So I called Arlington and they said at this point, no plans to change it. Um, Fairfax County has Thomas Jefferson High School called them. They said no plans to change it. And George Mason, their president. Who is black, came out this summer and said, You know, even though George Mason has a complicated legacy on the one hand, he did all these good things..

"Believe that Democrats As a party. Not every individual Democrat but as a party. I believe that Democrats are interested not only in axing the electoral college from the Constitution, I think I'd like to scrap the constitution. They seem to have real problems with the First Amendment have huge problems with the Second Amendment aren't so great on the Fourth Amendment. And you know, it seems like they would rather just Throw the Constitution into the trash. And start over again. So no more electoral college no more right to the speak your mind. No more freedom to peaceably. Assemble no more right to keep and bear arms. That's what they'd love to do. It's just a matter of Acquiring the power that would enable them To do that. Right now, In terms of Going to be the electoral college. I think they're gonna fall short. "Is the sound of Richmond. Stonewall Jackson statue lifted off its pedestal along Monument Avenue as heavy rains fell on a cheering crowd. It took a few hours, but crews managed to get it down with a crane this afternoon. This removal followed in order on the same day from Richmond Mayor LeVar Stoney that all Confederate statues on city land be removed The statues Although symbolic have cast a shadow on the dreams of our Children of color. I'm removing them. We can begin to heal and focus our attention on our future. Stony bucked advice from the interim city attorney and the City Council, which wanted to schedule a special meeting to formally vote on a resolution. Stony argues that he could do this through his emergency powers and that the statue can be put in storage until the legal process plays out. Protesters have already toppled several Confederate statues in Richmond, including one depicting the president of the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis. Well, Covert 19 is a concern in itself during this pandemic, but we're learning how the crisis is leading to deaths in other ways. There's a nationwide spike right now in drug overdose, Jess and it's believed to have indirect links to the outbreak. The Washington Post Health reporter William Juan joins us Live with more William. Thanks for joining us. Tell us what you found out here. Sure this is something that people have been worried about for for many months now, and now, the date is starting to emerge. We have you know, the state of our government is such that we don't even have real good real time data. The best that exists, though, is this data that comes from ambulances and police and emergency agencies all over the country? And that's showing spiked as high as 50% in some locations nationally. We're seeing in the month of May 42% increase in dispatch calls for overdoses around the country. It seems like there was a recipe for disaster here before the pandemic anyway, when it came to lack of funding for drug treatment programs did that also play a part here? Laying the groundwork here for this overdose, Serge? It did a lot of our infrastructure, You know, treatment centers, clinics, support groups. All of that is so underfunded in the country, but what happened once the pandemic it is you have revenue for all of these nonprofit groups. You know, they do insurance reimbursements. For example, all of that plummeted to some of these treatment centers are on the brink of just bankruptcy and closing. Some have actually already closed. Lastly, what is the possible solution here to bring down these overdose numbers? I mean, no easy solutions. But one very clear thing that needs to be done is they need more funding. You know, Trump and some of the conservatives they've been hammering this point home of like, Oh, we're afraid of suicides, writing overdose deaths, But in the trillions they've approved for funding emergency funding. "Let me tell you something don't don't forget this Mel Brooks at the best line of raw lacks. None of us to get out of here. Live think the people are gonna remember you. Remember, Donald Trump does one person that people are gonna remember from our era. You're gonna remember one person is that I tell me. Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. Who cares? Wow. Matters. I had my hand if I was going to say, Michael, Jordan. Hold. Okay, man. You lost a lot of people with that one. If you hear what the mood you say. And what did you think he was going to say right there? I mean, what was your anticipate nothing against Neil? But was wasn't Neil Armstrong from either no thought of a number of different other people. But no, he was the one. But yes, I mean as far as a lot of the stuff doesn't matter. That we all get, you know, so fixed on each and every day, I think there is certainly some truth to that. But there are some little decisions that are made that have big impact this political season will be remembered for hundreds of years because it turned everything around hundreds of years. The this is a president who has never a politician who never ran for anything in his life was never lifted anything life who was a private business citizen. Yeah. Who who had a game show and ended up being the president United States? Up to this point in time on precedent. Jed guys over senators and congressmen, and whatever that that had this in America just had enough of it and went with this guy, and he turned it on series. It may never happen again understand but man to couple of hundred years. Well, I'm just saying they're going to talk about this a long time moving forward. I would say a long time to think that's true. Meanwhile, by the time, you're talking down the road. The we won't have any valedictorians because that'll be done away with competitive, you you talk about little things that can have a profound impact. Yeah. I think this is one of them could. A high school announced late last week that they're going to be eliminating valedictorian and salutatorian honor starting next year because they want to improve students mental wellness Mason high school in Cincinnati suburb say they are removing the honors and will now just recognize student to achieve outstanding academic success through a multitude of pathways. This is to curb the competitive culture at the school and permit students to focus on other things. Okay. The can't compete. There's no place for competition in schools. That's what the world is. That's what it is. Yes. Businesses competing with other businesses. There's a winner and a loser. I mean, I know every business relationship you want it to be a win win. But I mean, if you have a business, you're competing with other businesses. Yes to get someone else's business. And even if you're not an owner of business if you are for example. At employees. Yes. You may be friends with your colleagues. But when it's time for a promotion, you're going to want to beat them, right? Yeah. How you do that yell workum, right or you work smarter. You figure it out, and you try to do it above board some people, we know don't. But my gosh to take away the competition because of stress how is that preparing somebody for what they're going to face. Understand it. So listen, if you wanna make the argument, hey, maybe you didn't get valedictorian of your class that doesn't mean you're not going to be a great success. I'm all for that. Because I believe that to be true. But to say do away with it completely. Well, I would have been if I hadn't been robbed totally stolen from me. What was your consider myself Victorian? Does how you identify right? There you go. I think I am. Therefore, I am it seems like that's where we're getting closer to every day as long as you identifies. Whatever you want. Then you are right. "Point five w well, it's graduation time of year right now. And we always hear these crazy. Graduation stories and ABC Sherry Preston is joining us right now as a school is dropping their valedictorian honors. That's exactly right school is Mason high school just outside. Side of Cincinnati and the school board and the faculty say that they had been holding meetings on the wellness of students, and they determined that picking a valedictorian and a saluda Torian numbers one and two in the class was was not healthy because these kids were just taking classes over and over and over again, not crosses that they wanted or classes they liked just AP classes, they knew that they could ace so they could up their GPA. And they said they didn't think that that was such a healthy thing. They're still going to have sort of a grading system. The way they do it in college. If you get a certain GPA, then you're named Magna cum laude doing your during your graduation sumo can logged on your next year down. And then there's everybody else is getting some blow back by some people who say that they're making students sauce the competition is a part of life, and it should keep going with this. But the faculty the teachers say we studied it we read the books, and we think that this will help our kids mental health. Sure competition is stressful. I totally understand. And appreciate how stressful competition. Is but but to the point of those who are raising questions about this. I mean, how prepared are are we getting these kids ready for the real world because I don't know that that your jobs are going to diminish the level of competition that exists out there once you enter the workforce. Well, that's right. And that's what that's what people arguing saying. Look, if you don't have competition, you know in high school when will you have it one? We learn to compete when you learn that somebody is the best somebody's second-best and on further down. But what they're saying is their argument is that you know, what we're trying to do is to to say that you know, there's only two three four kids that actually compete for this. I had a niece went to receive his high school in Racine, Wisconsin, and she was number two in her classical reformed and fifty kids and she just wanted that number one so bad everybody else in the class. I didn't care, but those numbers one two three boy, they just they fought for it. So, you know. Some are like, okay, you're gonna kid you're going to compete. They're going to always compete. They know their number one and two they know that if you get rid of that plus you have to use these a lot of times you have to use rankings on on college applications. So that as well, you know, use your apply for colleges they're going to say what your class rank. How many are in your class? You know, now some are saying, okay, what your GPA is it on a weighted scale is it not are weighted scale schools. Also, by the way, Joe letting kids sleep in if I were later and saying we're going to start school later because other studies have shown that that improves kids mental wellbeing too. Sure. Sure. Alright ABC Sherry Preston. Let us know hit us up right now in the open Mike with with your your take on this. Do you think this is a smart move to accommodate our kids mental health, or do you think that this is just making them too? Soft moving forward into the real life. "Forecast similar to what it was in Minneapolis. When they went there to play the twins like temperatures in the forties. It's may. It's terrible. All right. We have another school doing away with their valedictorian and salutatorian programs. It's an Ohio high school Mason high school. That's a Cincinnati suburb saying that their students who have achieved outstanding academic success through a multitude of pathways court into the principal. They're hoping that this will help improve mental health disaster. All competition, evidently is bad for your mental health. So will this help mental health? Maybe we should go ahead and bring a little bit more of an expert on this one Robby Ludwig was on FOX over the weekend. Talking about this very issue sees she's a psychiatrist the high school that has eliminated valedictorian. It doesn't believe in ranking kids. And I know that the kids are still tremendously spreads. They they still need to get into college. They still need to do. Well in the AC teas in the SAT's. So the Spurs is really. They're supposed to do what they feel comfortable doing. But I am not. I not say that having ranking real undue stress on his I think that parents need to advise her kids that happens in all different ways. You don't need to be number one that there are people out there who will ranked number one number two, and you have to deal with that reality in the real world. Yeah. There's the real world people. Here's why got revenge don't think it has anything to do with getting rid of stress except for maybe the people at the school. I think they've gotten harassed by parents over the course of years about those kids who have great point average is that are so close. It's almost flip a coin for was the valedictorian who slew Taurean, I think they're trying to dealing with the parents. That's what I think sixteen time for traffic and weather together. And I do not believe that for every man hired. There is a qualified woman who has just been denied the opportunity that is a bogus premise to me. I do not believe we have a a collection of women who are every bit as talented. As men one for one. Do I believe there are women? Absolutely. I believe it. No question. Do I believe that on a hiring purpose that for every man that gets hired? There is a woman who's just as qualified to be an NBA head coach or an NBA fischel. No, I do not. That makes me a caveman or a sexist so bad so bad. It's the era of labels. If that's what somebody believes they're more. The welcome to believe it. 'cause they're absolutely qualified candidates. There's no question in my mind that there are qualified candidates. There's also no question in my mind that a discussion. Of qualified. NBA officials to be hired. "But try gamble infant. And then see what happens. Correct p-a-k. You didn't know we are gambling is your weekly reality check, Thursday nights nine to midnight. And we're talking about the, and this was a story out of Mason high school. They're among because there are a lot of them. And even the sheriff who gets us on the air, thankfully, and sometimes takes us on something. Right. Talked about how his full went from seven twenty five star time to eight. And then of course, people didn't like that. So they went back. Well, let me ask you this something I'm not in favor of that. But something that I have seen floated out there that I am in favour of all right year round school where you have it year round. So that parents can plan. You don't have to figure out an entire summers worth things to do with younger kids, and you have longer breaks between quarters you break. It up is are the school days the same length, they could probably be shorter or you can go to that block setting system or whatever. Because then I think the other thing that it does is it allows you, and I talked about this is if let's say you're going to high school, but you want to go into the trades, and you don't want to go into college you could use maybe the summer quarter. If you will to go out and get apprenticeships. Experience. Lex ability like that because I do think some some depending on age some students need the opportunity to work at center. So think about this one reason why a lot of schools, and it does there are times. When I go man, they're starting already started before most people work, and one of the reasons is to allow parents, and or people who get them to and fro if you don't take the transportation, some schools do not offer it to allow them to do it. Now on the back end the problem with moving the start time back is the end time gets moved back. So extra curricula think about practices. What time games? I mean, look, right. But let me read this. This a comment from Tracy Carson, who's a spokesperson from Mason school. She says what we hear from our families themselves and the medical community is that the anxiety and depression, students are facing and other kinds of factors. Are reaching a critical point for our district. For those who don't know Mason high schools, the largest in Ohio fifty two hundred students has quote, a little bit of a competitive culture, and what we'd like to think of as the instructional pieces maybe playing into facets of mental health. It's just one step as a district. We thought it's important to put a stake in the ground. But you're not gonna make kids sleep for eight hours by doing that. That's you're not you're addressing symptoms. You're not addressing the issue years ago back when I was still in the news, and I'm talking years ago. And this will tell you how much because I I will tell you. I think kids are staying up later today because of all the social media technology video games. I can I'll never forget this all don't call anybody. I'm like are you have you seen a teenager? Now. It's nine ten. You think you're nuts? Hello there up later. The I the problem with us is we if we wanted to answer a phone call or whatever we had to get up and walk over to the wall and pull the phone off the cordless six feet, and you're going to be doing that. And you made this point earlier in the end the parent that was interviewed also to thank you. Yeah. Right. I get. No. That can't. So look also this we've discovered to when you get in bed and you sleep with your phone. What do you think mean, you think you're going to sleep? That's the responsibility of the parents or the guardians. I'm sorry. I don't I don't disagree at all. Now. I can't even begin to tell you, my friend. I right now, I got my planner out me. I still use the plan and I put the approximate time on the Super Bowl. Halftime because I can't wait. Yes. I don't know. Whether I'm more excited about Gladys. Knight belt now, the anthem or my favorite group. Maroon five serenading bamboo hang on his big boy rang on so the theme of social Justice inspire change. How about this concept? Let's play a damn football game. Let's watch the commercials which get worse and worse every year, right? And let let's watch the football game. I get it. I get it. Biggest audience one Lori women come all over the NFL is playing a massive amount of catch up right now with social Justice and messaging and everything else. I mean, look look as far as the cleats two years ago. If you wore custom cleats, you were fined fifteen thousand dollars to here. And then all of a sudden, they go no way. That's all right now, we're going to we're going to promote the clue here's what I would tell you NFL. You catch yourself and leave all this other crap out of it. Yeah. Yeah. How about we just have the frisbee dog at halftime? I'm okay with that. Maybe Mike Brown was onto sample though. They were bad this year, the wind. Yeah. When Fido wasn't so, but it's going to be in Atlanta. There's not going to be. That'll be fine. Oh, and my buddies from the waffle house. Segment for a CBS this morning since the Atlanta dispenser home is in Atlanta. Stop please. With the social Justice inspiring of change stop stop telling me what we should do. Well, I'm waiting for one person to come up and say to me, I have completely changed my life lifestyle. My life patterns, my belief system my dog Matic in underpinning, everything because of the maroon five performance at halftime with big boy that was the turning point for me. It's it's people you affect this from the inside out one on one inner personally. He's a big boy start to get a little Hong start to. Yeah. You start to water at the side of your mouth taste in that tartar sauce. Now, I feel Capello's about this same time last Thursday that we went into a discussion about the perils of my vehicle. All right. So for those who missed it. I have a two thousand nine Honda Accord, it has too many miles on it and it slowly. But surely has been breaking down. It has about maybe maybe not quite the clip of partner. So last last week as we we meet before we are show prep is we we eat. Yeah. And maybe we have a beverage nearby. We're close. So I told you I said when we walked out of the restaurant, I said now you're going to hear when I start my vehicle, and then please wait for me in the garage. So you get a full glimpse of what it sounds like. So last week we had a chassis issue and some screaming belt you could hear me probably from about a quarter mile. So I can you you heard it tonight. It sounds delight. And now, it's all been fixed. But we have another issue now the big, but I like big butts, and I cannot lie. So there were two keys. There was the primary key which, you know, did all the little things like you press the button it locked on locked and open the trunk. And then there was the horrifying secondary. I believe they call it. The valet key. This is the valley, which the actual port you skip into the keyhole is a little loose. And none of the bugs. So the other day every go again. I go to start the car and the key falls in half. So. All the floorboard tried to find the other half. Because you gotta have both. To start the. Then of course, there's the screw frigate millimeter. I can't find that. So I found scotch tape. So the keys down taped together, and I have to like care if I can't find the primary, I don't know where they went. And I think it was on me, my wife, sometimes is is not good at putting keys away. I usually am. But I'm taking the blame for this one. This is so bad. So now when I put it in the door, I have to hold it to make sure it doesn't because you know, what's going to happen. If I'm ever not here on a Thursday the key snapped off. So here's a question. I do have where he can I go back to the dealer. Yes. I can they should be able to read it for you at the nice convenient price of nine ninety nine tax. Now, that's got a couple of hundred written does. Yeah. Depending upon the electronics involved. So absolutely Scott Stastny go my question because what does this car have to do for you to get? Get rid of it telling you get rid of me. Sick of you. You can't blame. This is all part of the cars and the family of the car doesn't like you anymore move along. And I failed to tell you this while my wife was out of town. She's back now. But this morning I had to take the youngest to school. I couldn't find this key. I couldn't even drive the damn thing. I had to drive the car and do like a manhunt back. I finally found it you need some help Ralph. Thank god. When we come back. I we talk Super Bowl something else that super I wanna make sure that you don't miss, and then we're going to check in with lonesome George at eleven fifty for the last call find out who's going to win the Super Bowl or at least two games this weekend.
