"Nothing should replace the relationship that you maintain with your personal physician. Well, good evening, Dr Pepper here on medical frontiers. And we have in this studio. Eddy crow Goodson. You eddie. Good to see you doctor. Thank you for sitting in with me last hour. Okay. He's the famous cyclist from the Ohio valley, right? I gotta get shirts printed up. I was unaware that. Okay. It was good seeing you Eddie. Frontiers tonight, and we did a little promo there with Eddie the six thirty hour, but we're going to be talking about dermatology tonight. And it's very very interesting subject because our skin I is an organ that. We can see and everyone else could see too dependent on the number closer we have on. But you know, we don't have to probe. We don't have to you know, x Ray at and all that kind of thing. But we're going to talk about the skin tonight. And we're very fortunate to have three dermatologists three experts about the skin the Dermot here on medical frontiers. So I would I like to introduce the head of the division of dermatology. And she's been on medical frontiers before Dr Barry MARTINI. Good evening evening. Welcome. It's good. Having you back. Thank you. Okay. Dermatology inch. Interesting subject, right? Tell us a little bit about general dermatology. Dermatology is a broad range of skin conditions. It also encompasses new recently 'cause medic treatments for aging. It also deals with scarring. It can be simple things like poison Ivy acne ex-boss psoriasis, which we all know and skin cancer. Unfortunately is on the rise. So we're we also deal with all of the common skin cancers basal cell squamous cell melanoma. And we don't have enough dermatologists in the United States of America. Right. That's correct. And Pittsburgh is in what we call the rust belt, which is is very low in Dermott holiday, so Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh Erie, very low. Okay. All right. We'll talk more about that. We also have a newcomer to medical frontiers, and she's a dermatologist Allegheny health network, and she also is involved with cosmetic dermatology. And she is none other than Dr Kristen Whitney, welcome medical frontiers. Thank you for having this, and Dr MARTINI said that our skin ages. What we know our lungs do at our brain does or hurt our liberty. But sodas are skin. Right. That's what can we do about that? I mean, if you're seventy years old your skin seventy years old, right? That's right. Well, really, the most important thing is, you know, sun protection. And so, you know, we counsel patients parents because you really wanna be good from from day one sunscreen wasn't popular up until a couple decades ago. So that's part of the problem, but sunscreen is really very very important in trying to slow that process down. I read an article just a couple of weeks ago, and it was sort of well, it wasn't really negative about sunscreen. But I guess there are some misconceptions about sunscreen. I mean, you have to reapply it every no you can't put it on seven o'clock at a boarding expected to work at seven o'clock at night. But what about those numbers PF numbers and sauna? That's really important. They are. So what we recommend is an SPF thirty or greater for patients with a real high risk of getting skin cancer or who have had a skin cancer. We recommend in SPF. Fifty. But once you get past fifty the difference between fifty and eighty ninety SPF is negligible. And then that is the key that that a lot of people don't appreciate is that you have to reapply it every two hours. So, you know, a swimming with sweating it wears off. So usually what most people do is put it on right as they're walking out to the beach and forget about it the whole day. And so, you know, we say that you really want to put it on a half an hour before you're going out in the sun, and then reapply every two hours, and cosmetic dermatology. Probably also includes the treatment of acne and Eddie crove here in the studio. He will be when we're doing a little talk about what was coming up on medical frontier. She asked me this little Paget us and his scrape on your Faiza, you know, a couple of times a day. And he said that he had some acne as a teenager into young adulthood, and he wondered if they were doing any good thought. Well, they burn. Burned. So they must be good. What about the treatment of acne today is a little different than it was thirty years ago? Some things are similar in. We of course, do have some new things in the pipeline. So as far as the treatment of acne. The first thing is based on the severity in what types of lesions that you have. So usually we combine a couple of different medications together because they all act a different way. And that's the typical thing that you need with acne unless you're just getting a few spots here and there, but based on the severity is when we recommend topical 's and or oral pills, sometimes we'll do chemical peels and sometimes a combination of both or. I mean, certainly you need to keep your face clean. Right. Even if you're taking oral medication. You just can't expect your medication to clear it up. If you never wash your face right that too. Okay. Well, we'll be talking about that a little later. Okay. Okay. And we also have Dr Ron. Seco Maseko Maseko. Okay. Dr Maseko, and he he's an interesting guy. And we found out that we have some people that we know in common. He actually has spent a number of years in private practice in dermatology in Johnstown area and covered a bully only five counties or something like that. Because as we said initially there is a scarcity of dermatologists, so he has joined the the group at age, and we're glad that you have. Are you glad that you have done that very much? It's been a great reboot to my career in development. It's it's exciting to be practicing with another dermatologist who have similar skill sets. Yeah. And so it's good to be able to compare notes to you know, with patients and so on team effort, you know, when somebody has a complicated case of dermatology disease, or whatever and. Dr Maseko also has a special interest in lupus, and connective tissue disorders of the of the skin and those things that we would call auto immune diseases that have a an influence on the skin, and we were taught in medical school that very often the skin is a sort of photograph of what is going on inside the skin can show changes that actually mean that there's something going on inside our bodies like when the skin turns yellow that could be jaundice and could be a liver problem or a gallbladder problem or what have you right, right? Dr masika. Absolutely. That's one of the things that I got me. So interested in terminology is the ability to look at the skin and to recognize that there's some internal Yoenis associated with that cutaneous finding held. That's great. Okay. Joe you have met the three experts in the studio. Give us a call. If you have a question about your skin..

"Stick toothpick, actually, gone three to stomach something just a small as that is actually managed to kill the bird. It's really sad to say. But now a group of academics from Heriot watt university in Scotland is calling for a rethink of plastic policy coming from a variety of disciplines from engineering and science to economics and social science. They don't deny that plastics cause harm. But questioning whether the blanket ban makes sense professor Kate sang is one of their number. So what are their concerns? Well, two aspects to our concerns wanna ease the social impact as the banning a sudden asking these prospects like plastic straws is being big area that people talk. Secondly, we concerned that actually creating alternatives. Today's plastics could have an even greater environmental impact than what we're seeing plastics. Well, let's take the first to start with what worries you about banning plastic stools well for disabled people plastic straws are the only way that they can safely consumed by hot and cold liquids are able to consume those acting complex aspect of leaving leading independent life. So a lot of retailers for example, providing paper store's instead on those hot drinks and also disabled people may take longer to drink drink can break down people drinking and non flexible metal ones. Damaging someone's drinking. What about the second concern than the the alternatives to plastic? Yes, I want example, we can think of is how we transport drinks in plastic bottles and plastic can take a higher volume of liquid and say boss day. So we might need to have extra trucks on the roads to transport items that are and transportion something Alden steak. Also, if we do move to other natural tentatives, while we know they will break down eventually actually considerably more carbon might be produced while we're making alternative materials. So you're suggesting that the environmental good that's done by taking plastics out of circulation could be undone by what comes in their place. Yes. Estimates are that if we to replace oh classics dodgy use twice as much energy? Maybe three times a carbon greenhouse gas. Emissions. So while we understand the offense on audible, and we all upset to see those images on the blue planet of animals in distress. And I write ban without careful consideration of all the evidence is not going to solve the problem and actually could unfortunately, create new problems professor Kate sang from Heriot watt university Saturday marks the thirtieth anniversary of world aids day and over the past twenty years the world has made significant progress in its response to aids today. Millions of people living with HIV, most of whom are in sub Saharan Africa Lee, healthy and productive lives. One country in the region is even inching close to an aids free generation Namibia has seen a fifty percent reduction in infections over the last two years and the BBC's Nelson Maseko traveled with a local NGO development aid from people to people to see how HIV is being tackled early on in the north of the country. "Nelson Maseko reporting from Limpopo province in South Africa. You're saying both the Jamaican Olympic sprinter commonly known as the fastest man on the planet has officially cut ties with the Australian football club. He'd hoped was going to help him forge a new career in soccer, the central coast. Mariners weren't willing to pay the kind of money. The star had wanted at the end of a trial period. Dominic bossy football reporter for the Sydney Morning Herald. There's a few reasons why it didn't quite eventuate. He was on trial for about two months. He showed signs of improvement. But ultimately, he left he's run through lights. It's fair to say he started this mission of what he wants. Thirty two years old, which is quite light considering most football is already playing professionally at eighteen years of age is the big thing that let him down is change of direction was actually quite terrible stainless or is only had to run in a straight line. So he's never had this ability to be mobile the building of his face changes direction. He could run for faucet. But he just wasn't a football. It's feticide. Also is the big commercial star that he was he was used to big money. Wasn't he? Yeah. It's a hard thing to sacrifice, isn't it when you are paid handsomely. He's asking price with led to believe was about three million Australian dollars. But let's be honest. He wasn't worth at in terms of football sense in terms of commercial revenue. Well, he model something to the table. But there are a lot of political problems. If Senator Chris Mariners offered him the sort of money, he was after because you can imagine if you're a football who's losing your place to you bolts, if a Johnny come lightly in terms applying the game, you're not going to be happy. The coaches aren't going to want to have to play him just for commercial reasons. So you could be heading. It's a bit of a Pacific storm in terms of Rudy tame morality Sondhi McConnell money was asking for where angry players angry colleagues. We a few plays who definitely raising their eyebrows thinking hang on guys is this guy going to take my place. I've been playing football for the better part of fifteen years of sorry to try and get this spot, and this athletes, just become a take it from me. I think a few plays with questioning that. But because the trial ended the way that it did. And it never progressive stage of having a professional deal. I don't think the anger really similar to the surface if the club wanted publicity while they got it didn't they ended up their profile and apparently given them scope to buy big star players in the future. Absolutely. So central coast. Mariners social media presence has gone up sixfold in two months that's more than any advertisement campaign would have done for them. Otherwise Ford along I think it's six sponsors since he ain't bolt arrived at the club. So you can just imagine the of commercial return just the trial period lard had four Sentra, Chris marriages, and they know the market to sign plays in January. So he was a good investment short-term. It was a fantastic investment considering that central coast. Mariners didn't really pay him much for the trial period. They companies accommodation costs. I think I covered his travel costs as well. They didn't do too badly out of that. And you criticized you saying bolts change of direction in the soccer game. But he did have strengths as a player. Do you think you'll still have a football career? Now, you just have to look at it. He's six foot five he's huge. He is the fastest man in the universe. I think there was some merits it. You know, maybe having him as a plan B option to throwing him on at the eightieth minute. When you're chasing a game. He terrorizes defenders just because if he she physicality, I think he can make it as a professional football. I don't know where I don't know if he will be in the top league in the world or top division. But if it is truly he's during well, sometimes you gotta make a few sacrifices to get there. That was Dominic bossy. Who's a sports reporter in Sydney? This is the BBC World Service..
