"maryland" Discussed on The Political History of the United States
"It is not until sixteen fifty eight. That claiborne is kicked off the island for good as an interesting side. Note Virginia. Continue you to officially hold the position that the island was their territory right up until seventeen seventy six after Baltimore seized Kent Island in Sixteen thirty five the call it is there were going to want their do representation in the legislature however due to the location on the island getting to the assembly at Saint. Mary's was difficult about a practical level. This leads the colonists on the island who said a representative to put forth their interests instead of them trying to personally make it to the assembly. This of course really had become the story across the colonies we see representative assembly spread throughout the colonial United States. As we move on in our story. Sorry we are going to continue to see the growth and evolution of the representative form of government. which eventually is going to accumulate in the continental congress? Interestingly interestingly in this case one of the first acts we see past and one that Baltimore intelligently wasn't about the veto wasn't oath of loyalty towards Charles. The first the concern in England is that the Connie's were going to become a haven for radicals which is something that the Maryland contests hoped to avoid. I mentioned this because we are obviously looking for trends here. That are going to explain the road to the revolution however this does as a reminder that in these sixteen forty s independence just isn't and something that was on their radar. As was the case in Virginia Maryland quickly grew into an area dominated by colonists who owned large tracts of wind with an economy centered centered around tobacco likewise it wasn't sixteen o seven anymore and the colonist understood that well profits are wonderful. Rowing food is also something that's probably probably worth doing. Colonist now had decades of knowledge from Jamestown out their disposal and Marylin quickly thrived. Things did become far more tenuous during the early part of the sixteen forties however Leonard Calvert did return to England during sixteen forty two in. What was the early phases of the English? Civil Wars with Baltimore mood was seemingly to Charles unable to get his correspondence across the Atlantic and Leonard. Having trouble back home Maryland was essentially left without any any meaningful leadership with anti-catholic sediments or any high people were quick to take advantage of the situation with Baltimore and his brother Leonard Calvert now all the way across the Atlantic there was a vacuum that suddenly appeared in Maryland's leadership inside of Maryland. It was Richard Ingle a columnist tobacco trader who decided to step into the void. ingle quickly Saint Mary's in the name of the Protestants instance. Also and I'm guessing. This does not come with much shock. William Claiborne seized on this opportunity and quickly retook. Kent Island something that he wasted exactly zero seconds. Doing it would take nearly two years for a Leonard to regain full control over the colony and he would only actually manage energy with help from governor Berkeley Virginia the period of infighting between the Catholics and the Protestants that occurred in the colony over the two year period made Baltimore. I realized that change was needed. The answer came in the form of a document promising religious toleration in the colony the act concerning religion did had several things I m most importantly it was a method whereby Baltimore could prove that he was not an enemy to the now post civil war only Protestant England and sixteen forty nine was not a wonderful time to be at the head of a supposed Catholic haven. That was the kind of thing that would draw unwanted attention towards Baltimore in this bill therefore promise that his colony would offer full religious tolerance to Christians which was meant to pacify parliament that this was not a Catholic colony money at the same time however there was pragmatic reasons for this as well. Maryland never really became the Catholic refuge that Baltimore had intended and it had always been overwhelmingly Protestant this act on. His face was meant to protect the minority group within the colony. What really however made at this age master stroke of genius is that the Catholics were in fact that minority group? It was always the Protestants who had been the majority. What Baltimore two more was able to do? Here was passive act where he was seemingly giving lip service to protecting the rights of the Protestants well in actuality protecting the rights of that minority ignored group of Catholics. The situation in Maryland would grow more muddled during the sixteen fifty s when the English forces came and attempted to seize control of Virginia in Virginia. If you recall from season had remained steadfast in their loyalty to Charles the first and upon his death to house Stewart while the loyalties of Maryland Maryland were more ambiguous than what was going on in Virginia Maryland unfortunately was just in the wrong place at the wrong time combined. With an influx of puritans he inauguration under the newly enacted act considering religion Maryland quickly fell under control. Baltimore was able to maintain authority and portions of the colony. While puritans ends seeking to form a society like New England controlled the rest. Baltimore eventually made his pleas for help to Oliver Cromwell personally Krummel. Obviously Fli was aware that he had to keep the major lords of England. Happy and had little interesting getting on the wrong side of Baltimore. He was tired of war and was not terribly interested in starting and another one at the same time cromwell appeared in himself you. The American periods as often acting excessively a compromise was eventually reached which saw crumble reinstate Baltimore into power while at the same time getting Baltimore to agree to a full pardon for those who had seized the colony as a result the Maryland. Puritans begrudgingly accepted the act concerning religion politically. This is how the situation is going to stay for. The near future Maryland Maryland would remain tolerant of all Christian religions and would manage to avoid becoming a period in haven at the same time however Maryland never does become the Catholic half the colony either. Protestants always outnumbered the Catholics by a relatively large margin. Okay with that. I think we have Maryland on solid footing that we can move forward in our story and not be totally lost when we return there in time with this mistake remedied. We can move forward and spend the next next few episodes introducing the Carolinas. So I will see you all back. You're in two weeks time and we will dive into the Carolinas and get another colony about its feet. I appreciate you all listening and I will see you back here in two.
"maryland" Discussed on The Takeout
"Segment three rather of the take-up coming from CBS News? This is the takeout. With Major Garrett US or saw toll president trump the Ukrainians and were ready to move forward following the call with President trump. The member of my staff asked ambassador some than what president trump thought about Ukraine. That's the song responded. That president trump cares. There's more about the investigations of Biden. Which Giuliani was pressing for a major Garrett? Welcome back to the takeout. were at busboys and poets. That was the voice of William Taylor. The Charlotte Affair Air of an Ukraine brought back into public service as he testified by the current secretary state. Mike Pompeo Jamie Raskin is our guest asked member of the oversight and Judiciary Committee And as a result a participant currently and in the future in this ongoing impeachment process Republicans said Congressman that. There's in that testimony which was new and a bit eye-popping yesterday that's just hearsay. And therefore invalid respond to that or level of our or that argumentation. Okay we're not in a federal court so whatever the laws of hearsay are do not apply. We're not using the federal rules of evidence in other words. The constitutional investigation actually allows us to use. These are common sense so here you have a distinguished public servant who devoted his life to The United States of America West Point Grad a West Point Grad combat veteran All of it and he reports what he heard and what he told. Now you you can try to question it you can try to undermine it in some way. Were all invited to use our common sense here and the relevant parties will be brought in. This staffer is going to be interviewed. Reviewed and Gordon. Silence GonNa Appear in public and they will undoubtedly attack those people too. I mean the most common thing to me this whole process is when the whistle blower. I came out and spelled out everything that he had learned from other people. The president and his defenders were out there yelling. This is all hearsay. This is all hearsay. Well yeah it was all hearsay. That's how whistle blowers work the whistleblower processes all based on. I think I heard this. I think I heard that. And so now that we have actual direct eye-witnesses to all of the action. We have people who can confirm what happened. In terms of withholding of the money the shakedown Ukrainians. The telephone call call the contemporaneous not transcript unfortunately but memorandum coming from the White House about the call now. The president goes out and leads the search each party. Where's the whistleblower? Where's the whistle blower? That's like you've got a six alarm fire. And all the firetrucks are putting the fire out and people were combating the fire for eight hours. And you've got victims and so on and then it's over and then the arsonist is brought up on charges and he says who knows if there was really fire. Let's get the person who originally called the Fire Department. You know it's ridiculous to that point. I WANNA play sound bite number three l. e. this is Jim Jordan Republican added to the Intelligence Committee by the Republican leadership because he is more It was regarded and said at the time combative and effective therefore quote Unquote Ellie number. Three do you anticipate when we might vote on the ability to have the whistle blower in front of us. Something New the four hundred thirty five members of Congress you are. The only member number who knows who that individual is and your staff is. The only staff of any member of Congress has had a chance to talk with individual. We would like that opportunity. When might that happen in this proceeding today? I as a gentleman knows. That's a false statement. I do not know the identity of the whistle blower. I'm determined to make sure that identity is protected. That second voice you heard is Adam Schiff the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee so this is a fascination as you said four Republicans for the president who the whistle blower is. Do you know who it is. I do not know who it is. I understand that they're right wing outlets they're printing someone's name but I'm not interested in reading it. And for those who hear Republicans say the president has a right to challenge his accuser and they identified the whistle blower as the central accuser. You would say what first of all you have a right to challenger Accuser in court in trial in a trial. The president by the way is not facing a single day in jail based on impeachment. The framers of the constitution designed impeachment to be a cleansing of the office a removal of someone one. WHO's a threat to the character of our constitutional democracy? But he doesn't go to prison for a single day. Now if he gets prosecuted later he will have every right to confront his accuser user in court. In any event the whistle blower is not his accuser. The whistle blower is the person who alerted the inspector general of the intelligence community about what was taking place in terms of the president's betrayal of the rule of law. All of these other people who are coming forward to talk about specific evidence in what they witnessed arguably the president could have the chance to confront them. But he's going to have a chance to do that when the trial takes place in the Senate play for you sound bite from President trump. WHO Yesterday in the aftermath format of that new testimony from William Taylor was asked about this description of a phone call with his ambassador? Gordon's online which according according to William Taylor's testimony. He said he was more interested in investigations about Biden then Ukraine itself l. e.. That's number one. I know nothing about that first time. I've heard the one thing I've seen that Sandelin said was that He did speak to me for a brief moment. And I said no Oh quid pro quo under any circumstances and that's true the other. I've never heard this year response. First of all it was not a quid pro quo. It was a shakedown. It was extortion torsion quid. Pro Quo implies voluntary. So you know but even if he was saying. This is not a shakedown. That's like a bank robber who's running out of the bank holding the bags. Money saying this is not a bank robbery. I mean he can say whatever he wants but the reality of the situation is clear to any reasonable observer. It was was an attempt to rest from the Ukrainian President Zilenski a commitment to validate the discredited conspiracy. Theory about sixteen eighteen that it was the Ukrainians and not the Russians who interfered an election and then to get them involved in our twenty twenty campus. That sounded like a forceful denial to you. I know nothing about that. First Time I've heard you know it sounds like Donald trump meaning. He makes it up as he goes along. But Everything is distraction. In a diversion from the truth. I mean this is a president who's told literally thousands of lies. We impeached bill. Clinton telling one lie under about under under oath about a private act of sex impeachment was designed for treason bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors. They they had no problem. Impeaching Bill Clinton for low crimes and misdemeanors but it was not it was not an attack on the character of our democracy. It was not affairs of state. It was affairs the heart and soul since you brought that up for my audience's perspective is it your opinion that was a misapplication of the impeachment powers of of Congress in the Bill Clinton case. I think it was. It was a pretty extreme extension of congressional power. I wasn't in Congress than you know so I not privy to everything that took place but the basic character of the fence lying about an affair is not what the framers of the Constitution had in mind. Treason is about betraying. The country to foreign enemies. Bribery is about betraying the public interest by elevating your personal interest putting money in your pocket and other we're high high crimes and misdemeanors must mean the same character of offense which is a betrayal of the basic oath of office the founders wanted our presidents to have an undivided loyalty realty to the American people not to Russian oligarchs and not to Saudi murderers and so on but this is a president who has been selling his office out from day. One there have been multiple in continuing violations of the foreign emoluments clause in the domestic emoluments clause and that's the original sin of this administration. He's converted the presidency into a money making operation and then into essentially a reelection campaign. So things you just described you expect any or all of them to be included in articles of impeachment or do you expect articles of impeachment to be entirely about the Ukraine situation. No I hope I am convinced that we need to tell a comprehensive story about how the president has converted a public office into an instrument of private self-enrichment and political advancement. It's the the only thing that tells the complete story that makes in other words. You anticipate multiple articles of impeachment outside multiple. I send question and some of them outside outside of the realm of the Ukraine controversy again nothing has been written yet. And you know this will be the work of the next month or two but You know if I could write them myself what I would say is. This is a president who has converted the office into an instrument of his own. self-enrichment often richmond which totally violates the emoluments clauses. One says that none of us can take a present and emolument which means a payment in officer title from a prince a King being a foreign state of any kind whatever. The domestic emoluments clause says the president is limited to a salary office which can't be increased or decreased and may receive no other emolument or payment from the federal government every time that they go down to mar-a-lago and they spend another seventy five hundred thousand dollars there for the Secret Service Chris to stay an executive office of the President and the Department Defense Department state. They're violating the domestic emoluments clause. He's spent more than one third of his days. At trump properties he's collected millions millions of dollars from the from the US government outside of the domestic emoluments clause and he's collected millions of dollars from foreign governments. Outside of the four. The moments clause. I mean this is a principle that is so strictly observed in American history. That Abraham Lincoln in the middle of the civil war got these beautiful elephant tusks from the king of Siam any loved him and wanted to keep them and he honored the constitution. He sent a letter to Congress. Saying can I keep these elephant elephant tusks and he got a letter back saying Mr President. You're doing a great job in the civil war but no you can't keep the tusks you gotta turn it over to the Department of State and president. After president scrupulously scrupulously observed that this is the only president who has decided to stay in business while president. He's got more than five hundred businesses going. He said he you would not divest himself. He would not put it in a blind trust and he was going to maintain ownership and management but day-to-day management. He delegated to his kids. Okay and so he he's been prostituting office from the very beginning. So but the colon cancer was a turning point. Well yeah a lot of ways I assume I think it was. I was a state Senator Senator back that and I was teaching at law school and You know I did it. All I had chemo I had radiation. I did surgery two times And I was a fifty fifty person I had stage three colon cancer and But I emerged from it and you know we can do another do another breakfast about it some time but you know it gave me very strong feelings about our healthcare system and about the need for everybody to be incorporated in it because it's such a difficulty in such an agony going through something like that to compound people's problems with financial exile and worrying about how it's GonNa be bureaucratic obstacles and other things all of that stuff so But it also made me realize you know. Does that give you an advantage in this scenario or does it not well. I think I don't fall for a lot of the nonsense. At the Republicans Gins are putting out for example. One of the things they said this week was that that I think well. They were saying. The president's due process rights are being violated related which is absurd the way that the constitution designs impeachment is the House of Representatives acts like a grand jury in a prosecutor accuser. And in a grand jury process or in a prosecutor's indictment process the defendant has no right to be represented defendants. It can't bring their lawyers into grand jury process and start arguing the case that comes later. That's the trial charged right. Yeah and if if you're charged then there's an adversarial process and then that's when the full panoply of constitutional rights kicks in in this process. The trial takes place in the Senate. The House of Representatives passes articles of impeachment. which are like an indictment a litany of charges it goes to the Senate? And that's where the Senate conducts a trial and the Senate. Adopting its its own. Rules will decide exactly how the president gets the defend himself and the presidents have always been able to introduce their evidence. Make an opening statement. Make a closing statement. All of that stuff will happen there. So they just deliberately clouded the issue when they started saying this is a star chamber You know the president is not being represented and so on. It's just a it's a silly diversion from the reality of it. They didn't give Bill Clinton The right to be heard by in Ken Starr's investigation behind independent counsel independent counsel And here There was no independent. "Ballgame from here because right now, you just got to focus on ball and try to eliminate some of the distractions and the first ball game up from Maryland a game against Michigan state this weekend. Let's focus on another game this weekend. Little more sizable more college football playoff implications for this one number one, Alabama taking on number three LSU. It's our Wendy's fresh look here on college football live take a look at the last seven meetings between Alabama and LSU. The tide has won all seven of those allowing no more than seventeen points in any of those games with two shutouts. That includes the national championship game to finish the two thousand eleven season. Twenty one's Bama victory. I'm gonna ask you the toughest question. You've been asked all week Emmanuel star with you. Where is Alabama vulnerable? I could lie to you. And try to make up an answer answer out of my. But let's be honest. The honest answer is we don't know. We don't know because we haven't seen it. Sure. They've given up a couple I think seventeen twenty plus point games sherbet to and been benched in the third quarter typically because they're up by so much. I can't say their own LeBron's offense. I cannot say that they're vulnerable on defense. Toe to be totally honest. We don't know. But the only comparison I will draw we didn't know Georgia was Volna Rable because they before they played LSU by the time they played LSU. What was typically a sixty are gain turned into a two yard gain. So I think we will see some very similar instances with this Alabama LSU team because Alabama hasn't seen LSU speed strength into nasty yet. I don't know, man. There's always a vulnerability mean, that's what makes the great players..

"You do wonder just how much more radioactive DJ Dirk and becomes in terms of where he goes next. He became over the last twenty four hours, not just the decision that was made, but how was handled and the reaction to it. So we'll see what happens there. But guys una player perspective. Their reports out there about a player altercation perhaps there at Maryland after practice you've got some guys that are probably happy with this decision. Some guys that aren't Jonathan as a former player self. How do you move forward inside that locker room? It's hard to understand why the players would be fighting. I don't know the details of it. I know that being a captain for three years at the university of Miami. We would have had a team meeting, and we would have said we're going to come together as they did under Matt Canada. So it is outside of their control to hire fire coaches, but it is within their control of how they're going to respond to whoever is the head coach. So I applaud the teammates that said we're going to respond by they're not playing by walking out not practicing and having more leaders within that team saying this is what we're gonna do because that's what we would have done. There have been no way that he would have been head coach again, it would have been us out the door, and you guys board figure out who's gonna be our coach because it's not going to be him first things. First student athletes, understand just how much power you have. Let's go back to two thousand fifteen in Missouri. When thirty black athletes said they were not going to. Play until the acting president Tim wolf, I believe his name was where to resign. What within seventy two hours? There was his resignation. Let's fast forward now to twenty eighteen at Maryland. Yes. There was a Twitter uproar there was public uproar. But the student athlete said, you know, what we're not going to stand for this. At least the majority of athletes did and the student body followed suit, I read the futon body president met with the president of the university and said, no can't do this isn't gonna fly soon. Athletes realize how much power you have. And then to answer your question. Ultimately, when you think about things the players, I cannot look be Durkan. An I if he were to walk in and give me a team meeting. I'm telling you that right now Vilma if he walked in and I'm sitting reclined in one of my seats like do on T meeting days and in walks head coach, I'm walking out is he walks in. So I think from here you have to rally around each other as a team as a unit as eight or so scholarship players in the hundred four so athletes and figure out how to win..

"Welcome. To college football presented by John. Drew pampered. One day after being reinstated. Maryland football coach DJ Durkan was fired Wednesday that after school president Wallace Loh met with campus leadership and faculty majority of which express concerns about bringing Durkan back. The about face was met with substantially more public support than the original decision. That was made by the board of regents. There was a sensory leaf that docto condemned. I commend Dr low for making the right decision with insurmountable pressures to do something different yesterday. So to censor relief, not only for my family. But for this team Jordan's teammates as well. For me. Personally. I'm not really playing for head coach playing for. The guy upstairs who you know, we've dedicated the season to get dedicated the rest of my career base in my lifetime. And with that. We welcome you in to the Thursday vision of college football match Amanullah show, and Jonathan Vilma manual start with you, which your reaction to the firing of DJ Durkan day after reinstating the about dang time. I gotta be honest. I was completely disappointed. I was distraught. By the decision to reinstate him in the first place. Utterly ridiculous never should have happened. If there is ever a point in a game in society in life to to not even make an example, but to really apply a legitimate decision and firing someone this was the time. This was the time to prove that football games wins and losses. Do not mean more than life and they failed. Yes, they made up for it on Wednesday to a degree to an extent. I am pleased. But I'm still a poll that he was reinstated in the first place. Yeah. Ottawa Paul is the perfect word to use. Because I sit on the board of trustees for university of Miami. And the first thing we always worry about is are we creating a culture that kids want to go to create a culture that the students can thrive in can they grow can they develop and to keep him and reinstate him that is the complete opposite of what you'd be doing for that football program. I don't understand. What would make them decide? Yes. We want to reinstate this guy to do what what is going to happen with that football program keeping him there knowing that he had a kid die on his watch. Completely appalled. I agree with you wacho and Davey hit the nail on the head. The question. You have to ask yourself is for what is not even as if they tried to even though this would be a legitimate. It's not even as they tried to reinstate Durkin because he is some sort of renown phenomenal all time winningest coach in football history. And even if he was that still wouldn't be. Legitimate. But at the point in which he's an average coach coaching us for what has been an average ballclub. It really just makes no sense. It was embarrassing for Maryland to make that decision, and they deserved all public scrutiny that they got and we'll continue to get because that decision was completely utterly embarrassing. There's no place for that inside. He let the game of football. I couldn't agree more. What I loved none of the student athletes protesting, but the students themselves much more wear much more conscious of what's going on in that university and nuts than not putting up with the poor decisions at the board made..

"Issues that that are really driving your campaign and that you hope will bring people back to voting for a democrat for governor. Well, having a Republican governor in Maryland is unusual. I'm like Illinois, actually, which had number of Republican governors business the first time since two thousand six that we do have a Republican governor. And before that, it seems to be that every. Twenty years on. And the reason is that Democrats in two thousand fourteen did not come out and vote. They didn't they. They weren't inspired by candidate and they didn't feel that there was a different between our units and we didn't organize in the way that we're doing now and two thousand eighteen issues that are driving. Our governor has not fully funded our school. That's a number one issue in state who'll making sure that we go back to number one, which we were nationally. And now we're six. They've gone down every year that Larry HOGAN has been governor. The same thing has happened as far as healthcare class right now, we've just running that there's they're, they're trying to do things in our state to to fix a problem that had have occurred where our premiums in Maryland for health insurance. "I have with me my co hosts, Sophie, hey, Sophie, hey, Kelly. I'm really excited about tonight. And we have with us today, Susie turn bull who is the democratic nominee for Lieutenant governor in Maryland. Hi Suzy. Hi, great. Stay with you both. Yeah, thanks so much for joining us. Let's just jump in with. Can we ask you a little bit about your background? I know you have a long history with the Democratic Party and how you got into this race or when I, the two of you up and I saw that you're from the mid west. I thought you would wanna know that I really started in politics in Ohio. I'm a girl from the midwest to, and I grew up in Cleveland heights. Ohio went to go on the at the university of Cincinnati, and I got involved in politics and unusual way. In some respects, I was an intern for natty city council when Jerry Springer was a city council member, and I worked with Jerry really crazy, and but it was it was a great time. It was during the at Phnom war war. Protests. There were also issues like clean air and clean water recycling with starting in. So I got in pretty much on the issue ended in politics and was very excited to do that. I moved to Maryland to go to graduate school of university of Maryland, and shortly after I got here, I went to work for Howard Metzenbaum who was a United States Senator from Ohio and was a great congressional of and a great wonderful Senator. And after number of years, I worked on the hill and didn't lots of things. And then I was a lobbyists of city of Toledo before years and and worked on politics from a different angle because it was really helping people and helping the city get federal funding and making government more sensible, the people that was something really important to me, and it was my background, my academic background too. So when I started raise family and saw what was happening Roque Lee and and in Maryland, I walked into a campaign office, pushing a stroller, and I was pregnant at the time and said, I'm here to help. I don't like the Republican candidate at that time for congress and I wanna help you guys. I'm going to be taking some time off when my baby's born and I'm here to help and they looked at me pushing grower eight months pregnant and saying, oh, wait, sure you're going to do that. And I said, no, really? I I will have some time and I help schedule the congressman and got involved in. I never walked away in Maryland. I've been involved for thirty six years and that thirty six year old baby. The thirty eight year old has two babies of his own and in six thirty six year old one has one too. So it's been a long one. Threats. I got involved in this campaign after years, working in the Democratic Party, and and I'm national organizations because in two thousand eighteen women have, do the women have to stand up in step up and speak out for what is right, and what is important, whether whether you get involved because you don't, you're concerned about gun safety, whether you get involved because you're concerned about world, whether you're you get involved because you're carrying about healthcare. There is a place for everyone right now just stand up in beak out and to get engaged. So when I met then jealous who was a candidate for governor last year and we sat down and talked about college affordability and fully funding our schools and healthcare class. There was no way I was gonna say. No, it was clearly something that I wanted to do at a time when women were stepping up across our country. So I am trying to understand a little bit about Maryland and how Maryland sort of ended up with a Republican governors. So we think of Maryland is such a very blue place than the congressional representation from Maryland is overwhelmingly democrat, and the state house in the state Senate are supermajority democrat, and yet there's a Republican governor. I live in Illinois, which has the same oddity, but. Not quite as democratic as Maryland. So what do you think are some of the issues that people are thinking about when the voting and what are the.

"Take that mess of the hit. Look time is still the head coach at Michigan state. You know, Shawn, Miller survived is resort, and people are just gonna kinda blow off going into the college basketball season. I'm not saying this isn't something that's going to stain for been in his career, but I think he, I think he's be the house. They didn't coach. Yeah, I, I agree with you. I think the Maryland situation is far for for more sensitive in terms of, you know, the same president who who unloaded on everyone today coming back and saying this, he, he, he wouldn't be there by the way, but but but yeah, you're right. By the way we seen the president Ohio State University. No, because there's a problem with that where either early layer did everything right by the book, technically. Any told us appears and then on the superiors where. Okay. Now, what do you do with that? If you're, you're out that university president because apparently then if you if you're gonna buy that they, okay. Well, urban, even though the bucks with those kind stop there and a lot of ways if he did do everything technically correct, and he told his bosses and superiors. Well, that means athlete directors and people above him, start to get the hot water as well. Good point. Peter is football season. I know we've covered a lot of ground moves. A lot of before we get to the next question which has been on the minds of a lot of our listeners viewers and callers. And that's the situation in Alabama. Most people believe that Jalen hurts is going to lose the starting job in spite of his resume. What do you think? I think they're gonna figure out some way to rotate these guys around. I, if it were me, I thought it was Nick Sabin. I truly wish I was. I figure out a way to say, hey, look, you know, look, what happened? Little house. Braxton Miller made a whole lot of money to make money as NFL caliber receiver. If you say jail hurts, you're not an NFL quarterback. You're not gonna play that position at the next level, but there is a rough summer for you. Just listen to us, coach you up and we will find a way to get you the next level. That's a that's a makeable argument at the same time. Lets see. My you'll struggles. Let's see, obviously don't want to be hurt, but he does get hurt then who better to have to step in then Jalen hurts. The other flipside of this is your saving just say, hey, look, you know, we'd love to have your part of this program, but we're probably win the national championship. If you're here, if you're not, you know. So do what you need to do. We're gonna support any way shape or form. We'd love to have you here, but you can't have a whole lot of waves being made with this team. 'cause we're just that good tech with us from college football news. This is the season is actually been going on for some time. Where people make predictions, you've been known to make a few fearless of your own. Let's get to some of the some of the ones that you have either given the most time to or the least time to have added one that I see them have make prediction. Understand that probably really well, yeah, this is trying to figure out Georgia and it's the state trap that I've fallen into the live other people's falling into the west years. Clemson, where Clinton luster, entire NFL defensive line, of course, they're going to take a step back. What do they do? They come back and win the national championship close to Shawn Watson and all of a quarterback. There's no way you move out about the Sean what, and like Williams and all the talent that was on that team from last year offensively and the number one seed the college football, playoff Georgia might be that. So this part of me that thinks is good as Georgia was obviously dogging that even last year coming within overtime, winning the national championship, the SEC east is obviously down. And this year's going to be a whole lot better. There's probably two losses there and they miss on the college football playoff, or they're just that good. And they just reload that cast and Clemson, and they're just right there in the college football playoff against long thing. I think Clinton's gonna lose a couple games this year, South Carolina..

"Next week and treat that player the exact same way. You're not fixing the problems. There's no solution to what you're doing by handling a situation that way that is the big story today at Maryland. We are not done with that story yet or the Ohio State story, but we are. We would like to get a little clarity though on some of the issues closer to home you played at Auburn, you'll live in that state. We briefly talked about a during our break before. Radio came back, but but overall, Auburn is expected to have a really big time season. What? What are they have that you like and what are they missing? Well, the first thing you have to like. Is the defense. I think Auburn has the best front seven, returning the SEC, the defensive line, deep, their deep inside which is critical in this league and Kevin Steele's amazing job with that defense. There are a few holes in the secondary Carlton Davis is going to be tough to replace Trey Matthews at safety play like a linebacker in the box. He'll be tough to replace, but the guys that they have up from Marlon Davidson, Derrick Brown, Dante Russell. I think they can. They can handle all of the issues on the secondary. On the back end, we'll get tested week one, my concerns on offense or the offense of line. There's obviously not a lot of guys that played a lot of football and most importantly, the haven't played a lot of football together, which is an offensive line. You have to Jill, you have to have time to play together. They haven't named the first five yet and going out against Washington week, one of a neutral site that's not where you can test things out and just figure things out and maybe rotate two groups or rotate one side. You have to know who your guys are in that game to be prepared, a love the quarterback. I think Gerry Adams, the epitome. Of leader, he has accuracy. He can going to be able to throw the deep ball. He has a little bit more control of the offense this year. I think he takes more control. Chip linzie gets a little bit more control as the offense coordinator, the receiving core, even though stove and we'll Hastings went down in spring. I still feel can be a strength of this football team, but we need to know who the running back is going to be. We need to know who the go-to bags going to be go back. Let's go back to the recent dominant offense of teams that Auburn football's head. They've had a ball carrier and an offense von that they've been able to lean on two thousand ten, four seniors on that offense. Ivine Cam Newton was the ball carrier, which is a totally different deal, but he was the guy that you could lean on. Obviously, we've seen other running backs even if it's Nick Marshall. If it's Trey Mason, they've had a guy or to lean on to carry the football, but they've had a really good offensive line to do it as well. Twenty thirteen. Greg Robinson, Alex cozy and Britain Smith even got into that line a little bit. And then last year brain Smith drafted. In the second round, you had a young man from Jacksonville, state and Casey done, come in and played center. Did a good job Austin golsen started at four different spots. He was a valuable commodity there. So veteran offensive line's elite ball carriers have sort of been a staple of dominant offenses recently for Alban football. Those are my two biggest question marks going into the season. In outside of Alabama in the Welsh. So there's so many question marks at LSU we got, we get calls all the time about that. What happens? Their defense is going to be good defense is going to be leap. I'm a big fan of Dave Aranda. I'm a big fan. I think they have the best inside linebacker returning in Devon, white. I think the bay had the best secondary returning in the SEC. I think Rashard Lawrence is great place to start on the interior that defensive line losing Jenkins..

We'll keep monitoring the Maryland situation, although it's pretty well settled in for the day that some some personnel decisions have been made, but the head coach survives for now listening to Paul finebaum show podcast. Okay. We were joking about the spreads since I don't bet. I don't know anything about it, but they borrow knows a little bit about the matrix. He joins us now, Dave always a pleasure. Thanks for returning to the program with college football metrics metrics at college, football metrics or matrix what which matrix. I suppose, Dave. Thanks for being here. Awesome to be on and got a love the love the drumline in the background man. Is there anything that says college football more than just the drumline going? I don't think so. No. I'm glad you noted that we'll we'll make sure that we send you the home, the home game version of that. It's okay day before we get to deepen the numbers. I asked you this all the time. Explain the process. Storyteller with numbers. That's it. The bottom line, you know, I try to take numbers that correlate to winning and losing and try to use those to explain what's going to happen on the football field. Not perfect, but certainly a different perspective in trying to approach every game each season. So let's start with Alabama. And in when you talk about Alabama, there's a million places you can go. You always start with saving and every year there is tremendous turnover at the coordinator position this year. The big turnover? Well, it's both on both sides of the ball, but Mike Loxley is the offense coordinator tasha poi- the defensive coordinator. These are things to keep your eye on, I suppose. So let's start with Alabama. What are what are you? What are you looking at? Well, I think the coordinator position is is exactly the window of opportunity for the rest of the country. Okay. One of the numbers that we have created over the last decade of doing this and head coaches use these grades athletic directors use these grades that we put out. We have a grading scale for every offensive and defensive coordinator in the country. In the scale is based on a couple of factors, not just the performance, but the. The talent of the team, the teams, they're playing the expected score by Vegas, so we can actually take biggest scores and compare it to offense of defensive coordinator expectations. So right now with Alabama with with Loxley, you have a degrade defensive coordinator with Lepore. You have a C-grade defensive coordinator, excuse me, Loxley degrade offensive coordinator. Now, the reason that so important is in the last fifteen years, there have been only two cases where a team at a ofensive or defensive coordinator going into the season with less than a B-grade that one national title that was Auburn in two thousand ten with a secret defensive coordinator. Okay. But that was Cam Newton year, and then you also have not surprisingly Nick Sabin with the offensive coordinator from the NFL with no. Great. Okay. So. Oh, but thirteen of the last fifteen years every national championship team has at least a b grade coordinator duo or better this year with Alabama. You don't have a big raid for either one. They're both below that. So while Nick has amazingly cold and a lot of different things, this is one of the things that I think when the rest of the country is saying, hey, how can we beat Alabama?.

Let me double check and see if I have this date. Correct. It is August fourteenth. Where were you for years ago today? If you were watching this network, you saw day one the SEC network launched four years ago and look at it now. Other headlines making the rounds other than the trip back on memory lane. I don't know where this headline Cam from, but we were talking yesterday about the Alabama quarterback situation. I said, I'd heard that the quarterback competition pretty much over. I know Nick Sabin enjoyed hearing that to a has. Put a stamp on the job Jalen battling MAG Jones. For number two. Apparently the story made its way all over the college and college football world, and it even made it to a former NBA great disrespect would asks rule. That's flagrant, and here's the thing. This guy lost two games in two years. He show that he can be a really productive player leading that football team. Now, granted, we know Alabama quarterbacks don't go on to be all pros in the in the NFL under Nick Sabin towards more defensive driven run game, and they a lot of times are being required to be gay managers.
