Legendary Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson Jr. dead at 78
"For you is a sad one. The death of the legendary Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson Jr. You heard them mention that on CBS News Just a minute ago, John Thompson Jr were 78. Thompson wasn't just the Hall of Fame basketball coach over 27 years of Georgetown. He was a cultural force from a pure basketball standpoint. Thompson took over Georgetown in 1972 after the team finished with just three Winds. From there, he built the program into a powerhouse. He became the first black coach to win a national championship in 1984. But the voice of the Maryland Terrapins, Georgetown's rival, Johnny Holliday, says he was quite the figure off the court. I put I always referred to him as the gentle, giant and awesome, towering figure that imposing figure that I think a lot of people misunderstood. But I always found coach Thompson to be accessible to be courteous to be nice and paid such a great street for young people not only academically but also athletically to be successful in life and what he did.
