Devastation across the South this morning, downed power lines gutted forests and homes eviscerated the aftermath of the syriza powerful tornadoes that wreaked havoc last night, including in Georgia Tragic day yesterday in early into this morning. We have severe damage and many counties across the state roughly to a him. Last night, I issued a state of emergency. One tornado struck just after midnight in the city of Newman, some 40 miles southwest of Atlanta. All of suddenly got still He just got extremely dark and you could hear the Sound sound like a freight train that was coming. You could just hear the windows shaken and things blowing against the front door and your ears are popping, and we just stayed there until it got quiet again. In Alabama, more severe damage and fatalities, including three people from the same family. Multiple twisters as many as eight touchdown across the state yesterday, Holly how authorities said a single tornado carved across more than 100 miles. And they can't controlling and she will not be convinced otherwise, even on Trump's low support from African Americans, just 11%. Why do you think there's not more support for him in the African American community hunting? I think there's a lot more support for him in the African American community, and the media is giving credit for Democrat Alicia Triggs is a voter in the suburbs of Cincinnati. "It's men and women calling her and saying, are you going to testify against? A preacher's son are you going to call him a racist? This is entirely unacceptable Dale Strickland. was just doing what was natural for him to do. There's very much a sense of You know she got into the car willingly right and there's a sense of one in the book including Mary rose to some degree. You know is really able to see or understand glory or her family you know Mary rose is still the subject to the mores of the time and place and her own upbringing. She does have a kind of awakening early in the book, but she's still you know to some degree unable to really ever fully see glory and and that was important to me. In this book I'm one of the things you notice that after that initial encounter on Mary rose's front porch. Mary. Rose in glory. Ramirez are never again in his together glorious path does not cross the path of the. Other characters she goes back to her community and her uncle who who tries to sort of help her heal through this and and to me that felt Brian Andrew to the time and the place and the characters I knew very early in the process that glory was not going to get any sort of justice from the from the legal system I'm very interested in how women and girls without a lot. Of Resources or education or power, find a way to sort of take care of themselves and their daughters each other. But all of it felt to me like it had to also be true within the context of the time in the place and so is very important to me to glories world somewhat separate from Mary rose's world and Corinne Deborah and and all the other the white characters in the book. It's done brilliantly, and we're going to talk more about how it was done. Next week I've been talking with Elizabeth wet more Beth, what more author of Valentine published by. Harper. "I'm Michael Silver this bookworm and I'm talking with Elizabeth wet more about her debut novel Valentine a window into the beauty and hope in the depths of darkness and fear in Nineteen Seventies West Texas. Now. I'm. Dazzled. By how many directions this book? Takes me in. We, not only. Meet the woman. Who has taken in her child? We meet the Church ladies and they are people who say to Mary rose WHO's taken in the child. But the word rape itself is ugly. She attends a women's council meeting. And? They fung her into the bathroom. To ask her not to come to meetings until she's more herself and certainly not to use that ugly word anymore. To what extent? Has the church become a place where this kind of violence has been sanctioned. This a deep history in white southern protestantism. Of Justifying sort of violence against women racism, and it was also very interested in the way that you know again woman because Mary rose's very young. You know she's she's twenty six years old and she has a a nine year old daughter in another one on the way right and a lot of the young women in this book are very young mothers. You know these are women who who have their first babies at fifteen sixteen years old to remarried by the time. They're you know they're before they're out of high school and she's been subject to the same social ills in the same. You know racist beliefs sin the same sexist beliefs as anyone else in that town. But there but that moment, right that moment when there's a knock on the door and she opens the door and sees you know you know an injured child Ryan on her front porch that moment shocks our conscience and it changes things for her and she's no longer able to fit in Ryan and it comes at great cost to her. You know in a lot of ways of all the characters Valentine, the one I'm most concerned about were worried about when the book ends is Mary Rose Right because you know she. She's not able to fit in any more. And that question of course of what you do when a stranger come to your door asking for help is one that I'm. I'm very interested in 'em in a lot of ways I think it's the most important question. Any of US ever ask or answers whether it's a you know a girl who's been dues just survived this horrific. You know or it's a family of migrant workers who show up at the door asking for help from a different country will, as we see now she's woken. She's woken by what she sees. And the fat that. In order to get away. From the thing that she saw at that ranch house, she moves to town when she moved to town her phone never stops ringing..

"Download hot mess at the Phoenix city council meeting. The Phoenix city council yesterday was it was a delayed vote. They delayed it by about a month on whether or not the taxpayers should fund a renovation project for talking stick resort arena. We've talked about it for a number of months now. Thank goodness. It's over well yesterday. They had at first it was twenty people wanted to talk. Right. Then it became fifty people. They stopped it when it became eighty some. They finally said enough we've heard enough from the public and one of those people who spoke was the guy who shot Mary rose Wilcox back in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven in the buttocks fractionally allowing Bank one ballpark now. Chase field to be built with tax payer money. How did this guy get even into that meeting? I don't know. I know he served his time. But Mary rose Wilcox was there. And she talked and said, hey, we need to we need to fund this arena. And then after she. Talked the guy who shot her spoke thirteenth nineteen ninety seven. I walked into the miracle county board of supervisors auditorium and shot Mary rose Wilcox. Well, thanks for the history lesson. But I don't know why anyone would want to listen to this guy. He was convicted of attempted murder. Yeah. And he said it was I mean, he made some kind of weird threat or something like if you pass this. It's like, a murderous whatever. Phoenix PD kept an eye on this guy. That's for sure the vote is equivalent of a bloody act of vinyl. Well said. Number three. Central American scale, the border wall L art, trooper central Americans arrested in southern Arizona. After scaling the wall. They had a big ladder. Very interesting last few days on the border here in this incident. You've got central Americans with a ladder hundred people.

"Right now is preparing to vote if they're gonna give the sons that arena deal, but they have to listen to themselves talk for hours before they actually go and vote. You wanna you want your mind blown? I would love it. Do you? Remember rose Wilk rose Wilcox. Yeah. Mary rose Wilcox. I remember Mary rose will shot in one thousand nine hundred ninety seven the rear end because of the ballpark in downtown Phoenix because she voted for a tax to help fund chase field. I wrote Sierra the guy who shot her just spoke at the city council meeting and brought it up and saying she deserved it. That's how ridiculous awful and weird. This city council meeting has been, but this is what the city council does. I mean, you allow the people of Phoenix to say their piece, but how weird is it that the guy who shot Mary rose Wilcox reappears, and we go back in history to nineteen Ninety-seven over almost the same argument. Art, should we fund this should we not fund this? And he brings up the fact that he shot her and she deserved it. At somebody denounced his threatening remarks. Thank goodness after the fact, but how weird is that? It's weird. And I'm actually glad he did it just because now we know what the guy looks like all these years later. He's on record saying that he thought it was a good idea. Again, some of the people that go and speak in front of the Phoenix city council. They're fine. They're great people others. But I gotta tell you about eighty eighty to ninety percent of them are are wackos. And by the way, we've got twenty to twenty five more people to hear from before the votes done. So probably after five think, well, the sons are trying to figure out if they're going to be happy at the arena downtown or are they going to get the vote. I think and by the way, the Phoenix city council will vote. Yes. This is going to go through. That's what that's what one guys reporting that a city council member says they have the votes it's been decided they're just going now through the, you know, the the process, but it was decided last year. But but the the interesting part is the Phoenix Suns. To make their case. One of the arguments was we're the only team that has Phoenix on our chest. They're not the Zona sons there the Phoenix Suns kind of weak. I know what you're trying to do. That's come on. To give you a better building. Exactly, exactly. How about trying to win a couple of games here? And there. You're listening to the big four at four. We start the four o'clock hour with four big blockbusters stories..

The Texas bug book. It got Started we later did another book together the? Vegetable gardening book which is being reprinted right now as a matter of. Fact, they sold out of that. Book but that's our relationship started we we shared a lot of different ideas we came up with with the. Inventions we Basically, took was recommended by all kinds, of people back in those, days for full you're feeding which, was a fish and seaweed. And, somebody mentioned that molasses or sugar might. Be a good thing to add to. Sprays And so we tried that and lo and behold work very well and then later on I was visiting with a, fellow down, in the hill country who was, doing research on oak wilt and he had discovered and when he put something in is Liquid sprays he was using liquid eight. And some fish, and, seaweed and things like that and he discovered that, when he put, something, that lowered the PH mighty more acidic that, the plant was able, to accept the nutrients of easier and more completely and he was having a better, luck and I thought. Well he was using some kind of chemical acid product and I. Thought well maybe Vennegoor woodwork vinegar would be more natural maybe fit. In well and that, was the creation of Garrett juice the the liquid Humaid or compost tea vinegar molasses and seaweed that was the base formula. In started being used at that point Malcolm, started, making, some, and, actually, set up, a great big compost. Tea making va- big old tank is what it was and. He was the one that I came up with.
