A lot of people wanted to get Forecast was generally for 2 to 4 inches of rain, changing or 2 to 4 inches of snow changing a rain that never did. We ended up having 9 to 12 inches. Snow. Yeah, I got a feeling just about anybody who had reservations for dinner. There was the middle of the week that anybody had reservations for dinner on Valentine's. They had a canceled and most likely talk more about getting stuck in the snow that day. It was without a doubt, one of the worst and probably one of the Hardest hit snowstorm that we've ever had on Valentine's Day and again. That was back in 1980. I should have some people right now going. I remember that day we were supposed to be that rose buds and we ended up needing that Pippins bar on in River north because we couldn't make it over the roads, But that was only three blocks away Parking spot. We were doing love story so 31 to 91 7200 if you if you met your loved one on the Valentine's Day snowstorm 1990 you get a prize? Rick really quickly. I got about a minute before I go let you go. But you mentioned that the predicted of that day was 2 to 4 inches changing a rain. It's a real fine line with these temperatures and waited to get rain, ice or snow. Have we gotten better since 1990 it being really able to get these grades Right way We've gotten tons better man. In fact, I'm just looking right now. It's some of the forecast models and it shows anywhere between maybe 1 to 2 inches coming at us. Later on today, mainly after about six or seven o'clock. I think tomorrow most of the snow is over with by noon. And then after that, just cold and the thing about it when you get super cold this time of the year, you push the storm track south for the next storm trip. Most likely is gonna be a second places like maybe Indianapolis. Maybe Toledo, Ohio, may be Detroit. Coming up here on Monday. But at this point, John, it looks like the biggest knows they shout a little bit of snow coming through here tonight. It's just going to add insult to injury, and the only thing I can see coming out of this pattern is maybe one or two more days of extreme cold if we can get through this cold spell with only three days below zero, and maybe 4 to 6 inches of snow. Is that part of this where we don't want to do a lockout and in the high schoolers can finish their finals and they're trying to apply for schools and take p s A T s. It's just what is. What are we doing here? Feel in the dark. I hear you on that If you ever started a group before Ryan, are you? Is this a new thing for you? No. No way. I got the local school council meetings. If if that counts and West end in, But now we've We've never done anything like this. But you know it binds parents together, You know times of crisis and you look to your community toe bind together and try to find a sense of community and And voice frustration and then put it into action. And again. I'm I'm constantly You know, Florida and Just impressed with, you know some of the willpower that these parents have have shown throughout this this this time, right, making some incredibly difficult decisions for their families. And somehow still willing toe to take a really good tone and try to find you know the optimistic side in the light at the end of the tunnel it this side, So that's the goal here is to how do we take this frustration that parents feel And how do we message that in a very positive way so that our leaders can listen and get past the political fighting that they're going through right now and the Webbers that they're exerting on each other. "The El tracks there, so they're working on all that, But I hope it's okay. And I hope they get to rebuild that. Let's talk about this whole wall. Bhikhu. So what about this life or what should we know about it? Yeah. Snowfall totals, though. Uh, Tom, what should we know about all this? What We need to know. Well, you know, it's interesting. We have completely turned the corner on snowfall. We had a snow drought going On a very warm uh, you know, start to the cold season cash. November was seven degrees above normal December and just completed January. Both came in over five degrees above normal. That's amazing is a Monthly total. And yet this is a lot, Nina winter and those air historically very volatile. So here we are. In the back end of winter. We've entered February the last month of Climatological Witter and Whammo. It hits the cold air that have been picking had taken up residence on the underside of the hemisphere has crossed the polls and when it comes over here You know, we know we turned colder, but we activate the storm track. Your state is strengthened that jet stream at in off the Pacific come the storms. So this thing that hit us over the weekend it dump 7 Ft of snow out in the Sierra California Where do you hear the snow numbers out of the East Coast. This is going on and produced more than 30 inches of snow. In New Jersey, not far from New York. I noticed New York City they've had up to 16 17 inches of snow, but highest total I've seen is Montague, New Jersey's had 33 inches of snow 31.2 inches. Springtown, New Jersey Lowell, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. 24 inches of snow. They had 71 mile an hour winds on the Massachusetts coast with that storm, which turned into a classic nor'easter. But that was the one That dropped 10.8 ago here and 11.3 at midway, and many areas close in here to the Chicago area and in the lake and his belt along the shoreline head over a foot of snow out event. That's the most know Anna that we've had in Chicago in five years and the period from January 25th through yesterday. Had produced nearly 20 inches of snow. That's just a week's time in our area around Evanston, there was one of the key points there for maximum accumulation. That's the most snow. We had 16.8 inches ago hearing that the past week that's the most know we've had in that time period since no record second most still, we've had since Snow records began here. 18 84 85. So that goes back quite a ways so we completely we completely turned that around the corner on snowfall. We're now above normal far from being in a snow drought status, and we haven't seen the last of it now. The other shoot. It's gonna drop is brutally cold Arctic air That's going to come in here later this week, and more. So this weekend and in their early next week and This thing has some staying power will have multiple days with sub zero thermometer readings, and I was looking at some of the wind chills the early average among the models. We look at It's wind chills around Campbell. Oh, by Friday morning, 20 below by Saturday morning and around 30 Below is possible Sunday, Monday and Tuesday mornings. Um, so it is really going to get cold around here and single digit daytime highs on the thermometer with a roaring wind is it comes in on on Friday, we had a win's a 45 MPH and gusts. So, boy, this winner is back loaded on the back end, and it's it's suddenly turned like a real authentic Chicago winter around here or will in the days ahead and by the way, Thursday to get messy. We could have a wintry mix coming here just after lunchtime, and they're going to Thursday night. We could get some accumulation of snow before that's all over and another little snow on the back side. "He covers City Hall joining us Now, Greg is this is busy a day or is it coming down a little bit? I know these have been pretty pretty hectic in your world. You know it's up and down, but even the down is pretty up. Usually You know something else I saw here. Alderman Brand new Riley changed his Twitter background to pot Paradise Alderman. He seems to be pretty upset. It's one of the things that's coming out of City Hall right now. There. Mayor is not really keen. Or maybe she's already shut down the idea of having one of these marijuana dispensaries in the downtown district, which would be his ward, and he's not happy about it. Yeah. You know, it's not necessarily knew because the mayor has been opposed to it from the beginning. She said. She didn't wanna make it, uh, you know last year and even 2019. She said that She didn't wanna make it into take away the family friendliness of it. You know, as though she doesn't want people's selling weed right outside the bean, which is probably something that everybody would agree on. But she is she's taking it pretty hard line from the beginning against weed downtown, and the position now is that with storefronts vacants emptying out and all the vacants after the civil unrest in the pandemic. There is some pot businesses want to come down. They should. And the mayor dismissed it way out of hand yesterday and she said that, you know, she doesn't want it to be a pop paradise, which I think some people, um And you can see the Alderman. Two are rolling their eyes at because they would say nobody's trying to make downtown upon paradise, Although it is a good throws. It is a great phrase, and he's gonna use it. I'm sure I don't know if he's totally lost. This bet. Would you say it's done done? Not gonna happen. Or you think that there might be some discussions Still, would we ever see it? A downtown dispensary in the near future. I think what all the men Riley has on his side is that it doesn't make business ends. Put a dispensary business down there somewhere. And so there's going to be economic and financial pressures of the city. He is a fairly prominent and influential all the man he's not. You know, Um, he's not just one of 50. Here's a prominent alderman with a prominent ward, who, um, who is respected by his colleagues that said, it is hard to get something done. If the mayor doesn't want to get it done in this town, and even Even with all the chaos that has happened on their middle life that is still true, so to be determined We're not turning Michigan Avenue into the pot paradise, she said. His response, though, and he's already kind of taken a social media about it saying that, you know, look, there are no quality of life for crime related issues that directly Surround these dispensaries that they're currently operating. So it'll be the same. Downtown is his argument. He's also making the economic argument last night checked, We're broke. Couldn't we use a downtown sort of one? Maybe it's not a Michigan Avenue on the central business district or something like that. Maybe it's kind of off on one of the side streets around there something but Wouldn't it make sense economically, to do that kind of thing. They have been hugely profitable, right? Yeah, he made he made the point that you know. Next time they say we're broke and we need to raise property taxes. This is exhibit a form. Yeah, right. That's that is the other argument. You also have this ward by ward breakdown of Chicago Carjackings, Alderman. I guess they released it to the alderman. Police did Did you see anything that you looked through that data? I know it's 2018 2019 and 2020. They go ward by ward and describe how many There have been in each year. Anything you've got from that, Greg. Well, it's pretty astonishing just how widespread it is. It's literally all over the city. Um You know, from part of why it's gotten more attention is that a lot of Um, it Z hitting areas that don't get a lot of crime. And so that's scary. But there's also some pretty horrifying data for even areas that Have a lot of crying, so I live in Little village and I'm right next to the North Lawndale, which is much of it is the 24 Ford and they have a astonishing amount of Carjackings. And it's especially astonishing because it Zapata it's award with With relatively little population. So 40 Carjackings in that ward go a lot further than you know, 40 Carjackings in. You know the 42nd Ward downtown, which has so many people in it, so it But it is it is a citywide problem, and it is something that every single alderman black, white and Hispanic really cared about. It is really concerned about because they're hearing about it. For sure. And I heard that some of that very passionate city council like us, a committee meeting on Carjacking, trying to bring folks together the victims who spoke who had been victims of Carjacking themselves and others. I mean, just sort of a passionate cry for help here. And I wonder if when you look at what the city has proposed right now, if you think it makes a difference, are they adding some more cops created to these Carjacking units and some other things they're doing. That's a great question, you know, obviously more. More help is always good, whether or not but you know if you put in a bunch of health and you don't have a strategy, or you don't have a clear strategy that's also um not helpful. So you know, I would guess that the police Department would say We have a pretty good strategy. I think that, um the results will They're out whether that's true, but obviously, um, you know, the other end of that is saying we're gonna put 40 more cops. You know, that's not even one per ward and so It's not. Ah, that is a relatively low amount. But you know what else are they gonna say? Right? They're not going to say Well, we're working on it. They need to, uh We need the get the situation under control. First of all, because it is It is actually a real problem. And then they have the political problem of wanting the look like they're trying to get it under control, which is A very important issue for them. Yeah, No, no doubt about that, And I mean, look, it's it is It's an important issue for all of us that I applaud them for trying to do something. Whether this is a solution that will start. We'll start seeing a difference. I don't know are we had like 200 Carjackings for the month. That's the last estimate. I heard. Yes, It's absolutely crazy out there and people are people are concerned people from all put. The other thing is people also from all political ideologies and from all Walks of life. I had a friend who I don't think it's somebody who you know lives. An exaggerated fear of Chicago was telling me that you know there. He just got a new car for their household and they're concerned about you know, what is that going to attract the carjacker? And then they have Ah, young kid, And so, um So it is a real big concern out there and it's really you know, it's also The other thing about, you know, just adding some more. Some cops, for that is is we still have a violence problem dead that was out of control last year. I don't know quite what? How the numbers add up, but it's so something to keep Avenger. So CPD has his hands full. Yeah, no doubt about that. Greg Pratt. Thank you. Thanks for the time this afternoon. Always like hearing from you. Thank you. Gregory Print. "Not been much of a winter so far, not much snow. Certainly that was not the story in 1979 were marking an anniversary of that nasty blizzard in 1979 and WGN's chief meteorologist, Tom Skilling, talked with WGN's Bob Surat about that. Do you know what the forecast was? Prior to January. 13th of 1979 0. Yeah, you know, it was interesting. That blizzard was different than its counterpart and 67, which is the benchmark snowstorm. The forecast was pretty well handled. You know, the expectation had been something like 10 inches or more of snow, and there were Blizzard conditions predicted. You know that That was an amazing storm. I mean, think about what that did politically in this city. You know, Seated a bear introduced Jane Byrne to us and a serious sense. And you know, the city that worked. We knew wasn't working at that point, because we have been brought to a standstill by that snow. Remember that we couldn't get that winter started with snow storms on December 1st. We had snow storms every two weeks leading up to it. So the snow that came down with that, with blizzard strength winds came down on all the snow that have been accumulated. Up to that point in time, and that was kind of the stick that broke the camel's back on. They're saying one amazing storm kind of storm. Mary Vandeveld has been hoping for the Skilling says that it changed the way roads are treated in the city and inches No in this city untreated can create, as you know, amazing traffic problems. But you know the decade of the seventies, Bob produced the worst series of winners of any in since we started keeping records back to 18 71. And actually, we kept records before that, But the Chicago fire destroyed the weather records. So that's why our weather record goes back. Only 18 71, but in all that time every winter Uh, produced nothing like the winners in the seventies. Every snowstorm was followed by sub zero cold and it rendered the use of salt on our streets. They ineffective So it was a bad point. The city started putting calcium chloride him with assault, which Lower the temperature, which we'd melt snow because the problem in the seventies was they would salt the roads and then traffic heat with melted down the ice. He had glaze ice on all the inner sections with just salt. So the realization came into being that we had to do something do affect the chemicals were putting on the roads, so they had a calcium, poor eye and wow, that changed the whole scene in terms of Snowstorm treatment by the city was in 19 at the time of kid and a lot of people have snowmobiles. Then the dad's in town and they would go out to buy 57 pull people out of cars trapped on I 57 Bring them into the high school gym. I'll never forget that storm art. Another storm closer to home. The National Guard Public Affairs officer, Lieutenant Colonel Brad Leighton, is talking about preparations at the capital. He talked to WGN's John Williams this week. If they are assigned a.
