I'm Mary Ross and I'm hosting a new podcast called fights news reporters with so much going on around the world. So many people telling you, they have a definitive take on the news we bring you to the news so you can hear it for yourself from the newsroom that has earned more emmy nominations than any other news team. This podcast goes where the story is from conflict zones to the labyrinth of digital life. You've never traveled quite like this get the vice news reports podcast on the iheartradio APP apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. There have been which is brooms drugs, and of course, yet caveat caveat cavalcade of Asterix not everyone agrees experts are still debating this but the seeds of this idea, the morning glory seeds of this idea truck joke on those remain with us in fiction and folklore today and Casey off Mike you teased and tantalized us just a little bit when we pause for something and then you. You said, there's a Harry Potter angle to this. So around about the year two thousand Mattel who manufactures all kinds of kids toys of course, they had a Harry Potter tie in deal for broomstick toy for kids. You know millions of these toys probably been manufactured over over the years but the one that made this one distinct is that it vibrates when it's between your legs to simulate flying. But. You can kind of see where I'm going with this right like Hitachi wand kind of stitching. Yeah Okay yes. Oh. Back massager. So the reviews on Amazon from the period they've since taking the page down but you can find it archived on various blogs are really funny like some summer from legit parents and some are clearly people having fun. But the one I see here's in all bold keep the batteries out. And then also there's there's ones that are like Obviously someone trying to be pretend to be like an aloof parent. That's like my daughter loves his toys. She just plays within a room like hours and hours and hours. Till the batteries run out and all this stuff I don't know what ended up happening with the toy if they recalled it or what happened but It's interesting to me because I remember that story when it happened and I thought it was kind of funny accident like the vibrating broomstick they didn't really think it through. But if you think about like the history of witchcraft and how it was perceived and how it always had this kind of sexual angle to it is fascinating that that tension kind of played out in like a contemporary way someone new I'm pretty sure that's the that's the very reason that tickle me elmo is so damn popular to. Just put maybe I don't know that's Great Casey I love the Amazon reviews especially and so you had. You had one more. More ingredient to throw into the cauldron of this episode before we call it all hallows eve right Oh, you know you just you just kind of rattled off Lions Tigers and bear style at the episode was about an hour just going to add butts and penises and jars Yes. Yes. All boards they're the real VIP's I. Think we can agree. In today's episode. IV Like we learned too lightly this touches on. So many strange strange things like a social oppression. Belief in which craft Magic Neuro Chemistry weirdly enough like this is this is kind of a I was gonna say Whitman Sampler but what about this is a halloween trick or treat bag Of Weird Knowledge Nuggets. That's terrible. Help me out here. Well, how about this real quick go around the room favorite and least favorite Halloween Candy Band Oh. Well as goes no, I don't really practice favorites. I do I do think there are some insulting Halloween candy, the Wax Orange and black taffy stuff or the Lifts it's like you're going out of your way to be rude, right turn off your lights are watch go watch the witch and don't give me this insulting Candy having people that candy is like giving someone a partially used gift certificate for their birthday. Assure here's a twenty five dollar gift certificate for bed bath and beyond I think it's got seven bucks maybe eight on their happy bro Yeah. All right. I will accept that that's great. Absolutely I. Know. I am the arbiter of this this QNA. Patriarch what? You're offering. Not like that Ben Casey, I'm GonNa something real basic I'm just GonNa say tootsie rolls you like to. Oh I like to throw their point. And I used to gorge myself on them and be very, very sick afterwards, you don't find they get stuck all up in all kinds of nether regions of your teeth Nah I mean not not back when I was a kid got know. What's Your Casey? What's your stance on the alternative flavor tootsie rolls just very interested. They're okay. But there's no substitute for the original preferred just normal chocolate than grand least favorite just anything healthy like people given out apples or whatever without even having razor blades in them. What holiday do you think? This is a day. No sorry wh- What are yours man oh my gosh. My my favorite is sort of controversial pick. It is and joy, and I know for a lot of people in that as on People's Trash, candy list but I just love it I don't know why. You feel you being a facie sometimes you feel like a nut whites. "Bad the rent control and as you just alluded to in Minneapolis. So Lisa Bender. Who is the president of the City Council in Minneapolis? She's Kinda like the renters? People showed like attendant bill and she's also like the NBA's people and that that same politician can be like the vessel for all these interests as you just said and in San Francisco. That's like not possible. You were either the ten in person and you hate real estate developers and real estate interests. I'm I'm being a little neon but not that really and or you have to be the developer. Shell and even if and even nonprofit affordable housing developers in San Francisco around guarded with some degree of suspicion so the established battle line in San Francisco. Housing is tenants versus landlord. Exactly in single family. Home owners are just allowed to sit off to the side and say yes. Landlords are horrible intended. Sh you know what I mean. They're just they're allowed to be Switzerland and I think what pissed so many people off about Sony. We should just pulled them into the practice and was like no. You're the problem and in that. Was that was the declaration of war if you will. I mean the the reason. They're the problem right funding. 'cause you get it right like if you live in an apartment and somebody is raising rent. The person who's raising your rent is your landlord. Not a single family home on our free blocks a mile away but it's the single family homes. Why are they the fundamentally the problem will so they control all politics basically and that's through voting so that's natural. That's that's not on them. I mean if you are an engaged citizen good for you but in most cities even to some extent in New York where you're from most of the land mass. Is these kind of single family home near. It's about seventy five percent of three quarters of most cities and and then and this is what leads to this problem. We have or I don't know if you're GONNA call it a problem but all around America. There's a neighborhood in the bay area. It's south of market in the DC. The Wharf in Minneapolis. It's the north loop and York's Hudson yards where some former industrial district where they started. Oh we're going to put the tallest fanciest possible condos in that neighborhood. So Ma is the one in San Francisco and that is seen as basically solving the problem. But it doesn't solve the problem and in fact it just leads to these things that truly are luxury housing when I say luxury housing and being like nine million dollar houses and stuff in San Francisco. Essentially everything is called luxury housing. If it's new and market rate but I actually in my mind try to make a distinction and this is something that gets lost. If they're building a bunch of thirty five hundred dollar one bedrooms for techies. I think that's by and large good. Meaning there's huge demand for that people will buy we'll rent at those prices. They will live there. They will contribute to the local economy. That will work whatever right when you start building like condo buildings where the cheapest one is three million dollar one in the top twenty five million or forty million in some cases that really is just like some giant foreign investment vehicle and maybe people should maybe policy should be trying to build a lot fewer of yes On on what is you know the public's land to some extent it was privately owned anyway so I think when Sony came along. She drew these battle lines and she was so. I mean. One thing about Sunday's she I mean one of the thing that makes her amazing as a as a character to follow in journalism is I don't think she's even capable of being duplicitous. So for instance like at one point. She filed this lawsuit against this suburb. She was clearly filing the lawsuits. That should get attention and embiid create a nonprofit that she could essentially steer donations to an employer herself in activism. And she would say oh. Well I filed a lawsuit so I created a nonprofit so that I could make money too. You know it's like she's she's so open about everything and at one point so in San Francisco and this is true to again to a certain degree. In every city. The affordable nonprofit affordable housing developer world has an alliance with the tenants rights world and that alliance I assume has existed because they needed a bunch of people to show up to meetings and say we want affordable housing intents where their natural people for that and Sony Alike. Very openly was like. Yeah I'M GONNA try to cleave that alliance so that the affordable housing developers are divorced from the rent control complex basically and of course. This really offended people because she sort of saying I'm going to destroy your alliance. But but that's what they attempted to do. And of course it was very loud and very angry. Let's take a break and then turn to the next chapter that story. Hi I'm Mary Ross. And I'm the host of a podcast called reset reset is a podcast about the impact of technology how humans have shaped it and how technology reflects our values and biopsies.

"Film from Aaron Rodgers so far? Komo now we are not going to do. What what is he going to do a ride and he's Mary Ross. A Rossi's using cow. Respect his competitor that he years, and that is beyond your toes. First and last Michael junior here on ESPN radio and the ESPN app. It's hilarious because it's true. That's the assessment of the Packers offense forget just the assessment of Aaron Rodgers. That's the Packers offense at Aaron Jones probably due for some more touches out of the backfield. Devante Adams, getting better yada, yada, yada, young receivers. It's era Rogers. We did show there at the start of the season. We said very Rogers healthy, you guys have a chance if he's not very simple and we've been somewhere in the middle of this year. Aaron Rodgers has been hobbled by that knee injury sustained week one. Aaron Rodgers has looked less than himself at times. But Aaron Rodgers on his best day is just a singular force. That is not a. As we said, it's not a Green Bay offense that goes out of its way to do the quarterback favors schematically. You're asked to get wins individually and Aaron Rodgers going to put the ball in a place for you to succeed. It's not all that dissimilar to in college football college football fan, you watch Clemson to me that's kind of the comp is there's not a complex scheme. There's not a route tree that you'll see over at Oklahoma. Who's gonna put you Oklahoma to me that is the Los Angeles. Rams that is the Minnesota. Vikings of scheming you open a putting you in a position to win. That's what wink at Riley met Oklahoma out for doing now for nothing if I'm an NFL team. And I'm in the market for a head coach next year. I'm looking long and hard at Lincoln Riley. Because you put on that tape of that offense schematically it's not fair that other colleges have to go up against that offense because they're doing things that are so outside the realm of what most kids even their NFL concept, and I say that the new NFL the one that's stealing concepts from guys like Lincoln Riley in college. Putting it on tape every Saturday that guy is going to be an NFL coach if he wants to be sooner than later. That's I mean, that's not what's going on in Green Bay. Like clemson. You've got great quarterback who can get the ball out on time has an absolute rifle and just need you to win Renfro of the world to go win in Green Bay. You just need. Devante Adams to get enough separation. You need Jimmy Graham to be in the right spot and Aaron Rodgers going to put the ball in a row. Absolutely. Where it needs to go. That's who he is. On the other side for the Rams, this is a complete team so much. So that we have the patriot problem where it's difficult at times to figure out where we're supposed to put credit. That's actually a comparison that got brought up because they have Brandin cooks who was a part of the seventeen patriots. And the eighteen Rams was asked to compare the two one thing that sticks out is the focus, you know, every single week, you know, taking them one week at a time. You know, I know it's a cliche thing, but you know, focusing on opponent that's.
