"Partying meeting. And i think that's a trying to clearly establish whether or not the up will implement the new new approach deal which includes irish language and and also probably make a commitment with regard to the north south ministerial meetings. I'm not convinced. Even that they know yet what way to go. Because at the moment You know they might say tactically. It's better to just continue to let the be all the language and let things play within the up party in turmoil and they really don't want to do something that's going really Allow the up. Maybe rally around something that unites been period of time. But chris isn't a real decision this week for sheffield make f pooch pushes ahead with his reshuffle not is whether to nominate a deputy first minister. That's what they'll have to do that. Have the renominate. That's the way the system works. Fps goes for the reshuffle on a ten point. First minister and fingers one or two ways they say it is happening without insurance over ice language or willing. Go ahead with it yeah. I think that's precisely why mary mcdonald has written though the party ladies looking for a meeting this week. They're clearly going to use that meeting to try to get a public commitment from the from post with regards to delivery on the irish language actor the legislation and the new decade new approach. And also. i think all kinds of meeting. So i suppose if that didn't happen if there's movement maybe in the direction of you pay and then we could go skating towards the crisis and pay the way it should we be presuming that they would nominate michelle. Oh nail is definitely going to be higher. I don't see any with fade suggests that they would be looking to put somebody else in the post. I know that their husband out of constituency level. We've seen it in foil number seeing it other areas where i think they're. They're they're announcing that they're gonna be running different candidates whether they'll actually coop people in in.

That would have been fun talking about how they were minds. What else is weird that. We're not mentioning. Can't think it's a great coach. John it's making me so happy. Yeah because there's a there's a story behind. This is a coat worn by there's people. Hey shoemaker this code. This was the code that julian casablancas of the strokes war on stage on. Snl on saturday and When we were shooting promos he had on a really cool knicks jacket. And i said that's cool jacket. I gotta get that jacket. I said that out loud knowing. I like rockstars. Stars have closed like you like i've never in my life going see like i'm never gonna walk into the store this close so i said that out loud thinking like maybe he'd tell me where the yeah but that didn't happen that's all right then after the show he came into my dressing room. He's like so you wanted jackets. And he gave me this one. You gave me this this one and he gave me a leather jacket. I mean this is like there's nothing. I can do this but like i like nothing but i enjoy it so it's really good. It's so meant for like a lead singer. Yeah yeah that's right. You're not doing a lead singers bad. See even that the no but when you do that you the code all of a sudden comes alive. Yeah when you stand like drama laney. There's nothing happened. I mean the code or no code. There's nothing happened. But i got home and i was looking into the pockets and i found dis. Oh man texted him a photo. i said. Hey you know you left these you do you want me to have someone drop them off. Rockstars very meticulous go. I'll be right over. He went you. Keep a man so i just looked in the mirror. Saturday night you know just came home so so thrilled this show so happy to be back here and then i just to like come down. I just stood and stared at myself in the mirror. Like this. i was so happy you may. it's amazing. how much younger the glasses make. Because then you look like a kid in a teen movie like His first time at a party right right but he does computers. I know you're talking about right. He glasses speak of computers like A whistler in sneakers there you go sure thing. We don't have a audience here going nuts. That record the out their favorite sneakers gary like. If you're worried about your acres holds up it holds up really well as It's good and it's about like the internet. Yeah but it's kind of it's not like the net or on the movie disclosure where they're sucked into a cd-rom at the end those kinda got them wrong. The future was kind of on the money. Yeah i pretty much say sneakers in terms of your like party. A robert redford dan. Ackroyd river phoenix straight. There and Is it rene russo. No it's Who's oh it's from battle star galactica. Let's edit it like her name yeah. Mary mcdonald mary mcdonald and mary mcdonald. So well i am right. Yeah well because it's on four. We'll cut four and mary mcdonald and i forgetting anyone. No and kingsley. But i like you know. Just keep moving to if you are thinking when you said i looked young. If you're are worried about your age and how you look. And i have been lately. Because i turned thirty. Eight and people no longer go like what your big. Oh you should get a coat. Get a coat and glasses and then people aren't going to be like how old are you. Yes they're going to be like. What what what led you to this. What do you do anyway. That's good advice. I have a lot of good advice so we don't have an audience and different kind of questions to ask so. I got a question for you. That i was thinking watching. You hosts fourth time. You're an excellent host four. Excellent upset I work for you then worked with you then when we were yeah writers on the show you do not work for. I very much work for you. Well you auditioned and we're hired as a writer. August seventh two thousand and eight august. Seventy thousand eight a long fruitful run as a writer on the show. Yeah and yet. "Settings we also are going in to make sure they have the infection control support the P. P. support and what's needed to address the immediate we also want to look forward to seeing how the stabilization can occur at a system wide level for the long term in Rhode Island as covert nineteen is here this is something that's critical because we have a medically and physically fragile community in a congregate setting so we want to apply all of the elements of what we're doing for the immediate and the long term to help make sure that we have a system wide response and helps address this ongoing challenge my last question today is from Mary McDonald at the Providence business news several rural communities and zip codes are showing a higher rate of infection Greenville in Burnsville for example what's the cause of this this is a message that we relate early on covert nineteen is not looking to only occur in certain areas it does not care about borders between cities or towns it does look towards people who are older or who have underlying illnesses or and and communities that may be more vulnerable to that because of challenges within their communities that we need to address but we are seeing Colbert nineteen impact people of all ages and in every zip code and in all our communities so we want to continue.

"I think over the years like maybe they were on the same page about that in the beginning but by nineteen ninety-two after being apart for twenty five years or whatever that's a that's a generational thing with hackers too because I saw like You know back when the group hackers are absorbed the anonymous hacking group anonymous like targeted like bigger profile. Things like scientology. It's split the movement in to like. Hey we're doing this for the lulls versus. Hey but we actually could do some good here and I think COSMO is the idealist. It's like you know information wants to be free man and Robert Redford slack. Well we were just fucking around. It's it's it's hilarious to give Republican money to the Black Panthers. Does it again at the end of the movie which is Great? Yes yeah which you know this. This movie is also kind of prescient in that it presents a lot of things as kind of like joke scenarios that have largely come true in our time. We'll get to that in a bit. Sydney podium potier is plays This donald crease. Who is this mysterious? He's like straight man of the group He gives the crew some legitimacy and they use a former higher up in the CIA and ask many needs to. Yeah we don't know why like we find out at the end of the film. Like why KINDA SORTA? Why he got out of the do we. I don't remember that because this is one of my one of my week. The weaker parts of the film. But that's yeah. He's he's kind of like combination serious. Tough Guy Muscle David strengthen playing Irwin Whistler emory and I want to say I think the thing that Crease brings to the group as far as hacking goes is that he's familiar with the way the government operates. Yeah and so. He's able to like sort of what the government me thinking at any moment. If against also play he's got some contacts like yeah like that. Can you give him access or maybe keep him out of trouble from time to time sources Straigthen plays this whistler character. His his deals he's blind guy. He's blind superhero and he. His his task is to lag detects. Just natively like sounds and tones coming from phone systems and this is still the era of like analog phone hacking like just. He's phone speaker he's exactly I mean I. I buy a lot of what they do with his character. Yeah they crossed the line for me into Superhero territory when they mention him hearing ultrasonic Sam because by definition right ultrasonic sounds are on here by humans there yeah ultrasonic sounds are sounds that are not here not audible within the normal human range of auditory sensors like being born blind or being blinded as gave you the ears of the dog. No and that's such a trope like they do that all the time they do it here. There was one thing I didn't like about him. But like being more attuned to like listening to things get like if he were in that trunk that they put him in then they put. Robert Redford in. He would be able to tell you exactly where they went. I agree I agree. I even liked his nickname whistler. Because that's kind of a callback to back. When you could literally whistle certain tone of Frequency Free Long Distance Calls Cap'n Crunch Kennedy thing. Exactly Dan Aykroyd plays Darren mother. Ross cow he is the lunatic fringe conspiracy. Theory Guy Like Dan ackroyd. You don't know I don't like Dan Ackroyd to thank goodness film though. I don't I've got too much of this conspiracy theory bullshit and I realized I don't need it in my movies. Sorry you're dead. That's true that's true What is deal though? What does he bring to the group as he like? It seems like he's kind of like they're generalists because like he doesn't do anything but annoy. Sydney Potier throughout most of this film might be a Hardware Guy. He might be the guy who holds the probe while with figures. Yeah he's whistler eyes and hands and a lot of those films maybe that's what it is but like yeah other than that You Got River Phoenix as Carl Arbogast. And he's just the new guy. Yeah he's mouse in the Matrix. He's the guy in the crew. He's very excited. He's very eager. He's he's play. He's playing hyperfocused kind of lie. You can tell. He's he's attractive but he doesn't know it and he's probably GonNa Annoy the Piss out a lot of women in his day Mary McDonnell as Liz Is Essentially Robert Redford's girlfriend and unfortunately she's pretty thin I I saw that in the original script. They had her as a bank employee that got involved in the original kind of like the opening heist. That's the penetration test and was kind of enamored with the group and starts helping them and but the problem is organically weaving. Her into this plot was taking so much time in this movie already is dense as hell like. I paused to get a drink And I thought we were like an hour and a half into to film. It was like fifty forty nine minutes on my holy Shit and not in like Oh God is movies dragging it just like they really pack a lot into it they do so as a shorthand to get her into the group that has made her this ex girlfriend but it's very nebulous like the her and Robert Redford dating but then they broke up somehow but left and good enough terms and Robert Redford so good looking and charming that she lets them get away with shit and an inch Some somehow gets him access to this conference where he can go see Janet Gas. She's got a couple of connections that's how she gets back into plot and I. It's funny because we were talking about this You Hate Dan ackroyd. I guess I thought I hated Mary. Mcdonald but only really hate her. In Battle Star Okay. I was going to ask you how you felt like when we're doing a disaster marathon and she using independence as like. She's really good president's wife. I don't think I can see the president United States loving her as a first lady and I thought she was really good and charming and sophisticated in this film. I remember liking her a lot and dances with wolves which was about two years before this movie came out so they are right in a little bit of a Mary. Mcdonnell high on this is going to ask you Okay maybe you like Mary. Mcdonnell and this but really. The question is who's hair is more perfectly feathered hers or robbery there essentially. They've got the same hairstyle so funny because my mom rock this hairstyle through the nineties. Oh Yeah Yeah I think a lot of men and women did a steven. Toby Leschi. What a year for him groundhog day. You're with when the comedy greats on the dramatic legends. He just as a pure comedy role as a dyed-in-the-wool fucking nerd doing computer dating and nine thousand nine hundred ninety two. That's rough yeah. You're not getting a lot of Mary. Mcdonald's on the computer dating or not which I love being kinsley instantly says a computer match. This will get a lot more. Dan ackroyd exam. They should have sent. Dan ackroyd well. Though Dan ackroyd would not date Stephen Tova Leschi unless even took Alaska was gay. Where could they really? They really could have been ahead of the curve. There it turns out you know like Whistler is reading the Braille report of the computer dating. They're arguing sending Mary but he's like Guys he's gay sending mother also Steve. Laskey playing a slightly different character than I'm used to him like he was more on the ball and authoritative. Like less. Neb Ish than it usually is. Yes that's true like when he discovers something is up. He immediately takes action right. Yeah yeah he's a man of Action I. I was Kinda surprised by that because I thought he was going to be steamrolled a little bit. Yeah I mean he's like Kinda clueless and your arrives at this dimsum place and he's what is he picking his nose and cleaning his glasses but yeah and I think but he's like not fazed by like attractive. Mary McDonalds McDonalds. He's Kinda go okay. Yeah 'cause Peter Match. I love how when they talk about the computer match there like a computer matched him with her and I don't think so like a computer is so good at fucking matching people in Nineteen Ninety two. Put them together. Yeah like a computer would not would not air fail ridiculous? So that's the cast. They got James. Jones comes in as In a head Spook Yard Abbott but one scene and the thing is as I recall. He played like the Admiral greer character and a lot of different. Tom Clancy Films In fact I think he was the at the like the head spy for like three different versions of Jack Ryan at the time clancy films but I think he was just kind of like not typecast but like oh we need a guy or the star you know comes in and believably plays this role. Oh I know James Jones. So I really enjoyed how economically developed the characters affirm like they did a lot of clever things. Like you know you get this heist and you think they stole all this money and he just smoothly takes the. He's like he's in. He's he walks the bag of that they just stolen from this bank across the lobby into an executive office and says you know you're rid of cops are this and you could probably tighten up this. And here's your money and let's get paid. And then you know the the the secretary cutting into chat kind of patronizing them about pays the pays the bills and she's like not very well and I think I looked at. He's getting paid twenty five hundred dollars for this. Oh not a lot of money. Even a ninety two for the firm that he's running ways like. Yeah well I mean I guess it must have seen pretty crazy like in the eighties and early. Nineties convince people to pay big money delake. Yes no one knew. Dawn you know Tj Maxx hadn't happened yet. Sony hadn't happened yet like the credit card security hadn't become a multibillion dollar kind of enterprise and You like the way they're getting assigned about client is like Desire you've got two guys in the office. Potential clients and REDFORD shoes and river. Phoenix like expensive. Like the. Get the idea that these guys are kind of like money. Grubbing ambulance chasers. Yeah very very hard. Scrabble The way they work in little jokes like when Robert Redford's trying to improvise this back story about being a private I you know when he's got mixed up with this Mathematicians mistress and whistler feeding him lines and he's he's just repeating verbatim and he's. I can give him head whatever he wants. I thought that was really funny to show like Siri Situations. They kind of fuck it but Joyful Spirit Yeah and how like the NSA? They give enough of the back story. That like you just effortlessly believed that..

"Raunchy are rated ladies flicks, bridesmaids, ladybird walking, and talking ghost world and our newest contender book, smart, and I could go on and on, and I agree with the great Ethan Hawke the girls, just wanna have fun is underappreciated, gem of movie, and also firmly belongs in this discussion that. Was a title. He mentioned during the film spotting five here on the show. But for a film, Lisa says that is in its essence, only about female friendship, I can think of no better contender. Then John sales passion fish, the second than Woodard, shantelle enters this movie. We know that Mary McDonald's seemingly tough offensive may alyssa's finally met her match. We watch as their relationship organically evolved from, what of surely professional necessity to a true real need for each other's insight, and companionship. And we absolutely love watching every step of that journey. I can't think of a more realistic depiction of true, real friendship, and like with most be f f f S's best female friend flicks. We even have a delightful scene, where shantelle dutifully Sykes may also for seeing her high school crush. It's nice to know that no matter how old one gets we will still be reduced to shy little schoolkid when it comes to crushes and the crush in this film played wonderfully by a sales regular David straighter. Well, at least there's right to about the wealth of options for this list. I don't know if we mentioned that at the top. But I mean it was. Really hard? It was overly list a bunch. When we get to our honorable mentions because there are multiple sub genres of this, that we could have dug into for sure. All right, number one passion, fish when I haven't seen there's one or two on my list, you haven't seen we've both seen and recently and seeing together, and really loved our number one films. It's one sings the other dozen from our Agnes Varda marathon 2017, and I don't know about you, but it's not, you know, for me. It's not just a chance to pay tribute to the late Varda. This was a must for my last, I think of all the films even more so than Thelma and Louise memorial title. It's maybe the one that's devoted exclusively to a female friendship. That's everything it's about. And that's the two women of the title, they meet now I'm trying to remember correctly. I think they knew each other when they were little kids, right in the same neighborhood does that sound right? But they encounter each other again later when I think it's only. Actually, the beginning film, they meet. And they're both grown up. She's about seventeen. Yeah. Pauline is yeah. Younger once a teenager for sure played by Valerie morass and then Suzanne is about twenty two to recently attired place, her. She has a mother of two at this point kind of trapped in this despairing domestic life. And Pauline comes along and you know inspires her to charge her own path. They go on to do that partly together, but eventually they go their separate ways and keep in touch with postcards..

"Nations. But they can't if the records are literally destroyed which happens in expunge. So can you explain your current thinking on ceiling versus expunging, and is this a deal breaker for you? The I don't think this is a deal breaker issue. Brian, the, the more difficult issues are the amount of marijuana. You can have homegrown or not. What do you do with the revenues that you raise who do you authorize to open stores to actually sell the marijuana? But I don't think the issue here is even that I don't think it's going to be on the merits. I think is on the politics, New Jersey was going to legalize it New Jersey stopped. I think that started this shift the political environment. I don't believe the senators say on the record that they don't have the votes to pass it politically, and I think that's the problem here is the political reality that you don't have the votes in the Senate, and I support it. I propose that, but we're getting down to the final three weeks or so. And they're still saying they don't have the votes. What do you think there's some particular issue aspect of, you know, towns, opting out, or whatever that could get them the votes, I tried that? I've tried a number of things the opting out provision. I've tried the opposition Senate position is there is no state that has passed that without a referendum. It's never been done just by the legislature. I believe jersey may be moving to a referendum. Also, who sits at cetera. They moved they the legislature acted after a referendum. So that's what the senators who oppose. It say they think it's an overreach by the legislature. I believe and have anything close enough to initiative, and referendum in New York state that a statewide vote on legal, cannabis could even take place. It wouldn't be. Yes. You could put a yes. Short answer is you could do a referendum for a sense of the people where you sketch out the provisions and have a referendum. And if it passes, then the legislature could say, we will pass it. But I think that's the that's the problem here. Everything else is smoke. The Senate promised in the air their campaign. You know, we have a Democratic Senate now for the first time and I supported them and I worked very hard for them, and this was one of the big campaign issues. But I just don't believe and the Senator say that they don't have the votes and at the end of the day, if you don't have the votes, you don't have the votes Bryant, your say, of changing topics on religious exemptions to vaccinations. I see that health committee Chen and. Gottfried has reluctantly put forward a Bill to end those exemptions because the measles outbreaks will you bring pressure to bear on members in any particular way to vote. Yes. Meaning ending religious exemptions. Yeah. The way I bring pressure is by motivating and informing people. And yes, I am informing people that I understand, and I respect the religious exemption, and is very important to this nation and New Yorkers in particular, but here in my opinion, the public health crisis overwhelms, the religious exemption, interest, and the difference of opinion by the anti vaccine, there's and this is a public health crisis, and it's worse than New York than any other state, and I think we should pass a Bill. You have a right to your religious beliefs. You don't have a right to infect my child. And that is the balance between your individual right. And the community's rights, and I think the scale of Justice tips on the favor of the community on this issue on the negotiations over a new set of rent laws that headline coming up before the end of June or rent laws in effect, the last four years or expire, so anything on the table, theoretically, regarding the rent stabilization system and other things and Gotham mistaken, politico reported last week that some housing activists seeking to have view excluded from the rent reform, the Goshi ations, because they remain convinced that you would water down the bills in favor of real estate interests. They've asked speaker hasty and the assembly and majority leader Stewart cousins in the Senate to negotiate bills within the legislature. And then force your hand by sending you an approved package to sign what's your reaction to that. It's bizarre because if they're right? I would just veto it. They should go back and take constitutional law one on one. In other words, people at the table for negotiations even if some of the tenants groups, don't trust it. Well, I look how the theory makes no sense, negotiate a package send it to the governor. Don't include him. Okay. Then I won't sign the package and then you have no rent reform lows. Then what do you do? I know it makes no sense. Be that as a rhetorical question as an answer in the form of a rhetorical question. Okay. The I think we're gonna have the best rent reform package. We've ever had preferential, rents debate, conc- bonuses, MCI, the vacancy decontrol. We also need a better ten in protections in this Bill, you know, on the Vic shin issue. You have families that are victims in the middle of the school year. Brian, why, why can't you bring some decency to the process and some humanity to the process? There's also a question of the applicability of the law right now. It's basically New York City Westchester Rockland. Why not contemplate other jurisdictions where they could benefit from the rent laws and could actually help the economy? So even the, the zone of applicable -bility of the law is on the table. And I think we're going to do a lot of good governor before you go. I want to ask your question on behalf of a friend of mine. Hers mother passed away this year at the age of eighty nine I promise this is a policy question. I'm not asking him for some kind of special favor for a buddy. She lived her whole life in New York, but lived for last year or so, with her daughter in LA, partly, so she could have the option of taking advantage of that, state's Medicaid medical aid, and dying law, because she had horrible ls and was miserable when close to death and ultimately decided to use that law to take her own life with prescribed substances that she could administer to herself. I see that New York has a similar Bill and that you support it is that, right? And is that Bill moving? I support it. My father did many things that head of his time when he was governor of New York Brian, and he started the death and dying to mission because even back then he saw the increases in the medical field, and bio-technical technology that we had. And he said, at that time, he said, you know, the medicine is going to get to a point where we're going to have to make very difficult ethical judgments. But we have a death and dying Bill now that basically does what the California Bill does I support it. I do not. See we only have like nineteen days left here of session, or something like that, Brian, I don't know that it's going to make it to the finish line this session. But it's something I support and something that I think, is needed governor. Thanks. There's always for your time talk to you next time. Thank you. Brian Lehrer on WNYC where it's time for the latest news with David, I today, I David what's happening? Hey, Brian the supreme court is upholding in Indiana law that requires abortion provider to dispose of aborted, fetuses in the same way as human remains. But the justices are staying out of the debate over a broader provision that would prevent a woman in Indiana from having an abortion based on tests that reveal an abnormality both provision where previously struck down by lower courts. The supreme court will also not to take up a challenge to a Pennsylvania school district policy allowing transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their sexual identity. The justices rejected an appeal from students who argued that allowing transgender students to use the same facilities violated their right to privacy, Ohio. "Hi, everybody. I'm Peter Travers in this popcorn where we tell you what's happening at the movies, and there's a movie now called American dresser. It is not the story of Tom Ford, you know, it is not somebody who is doing anything with fashion. It is about motorcycles and about a road trip taken by my guest today. Tom Barringer greatest thank rate to see could be here. So here in this movie, I think it's it's kind of wonderful to see you and keep David back together after put. I know laying Vietnam vets. It was kind of strange at very nice. I, my dad shoeless reunion. Yeah, and coming full circle and we're all army vets from Vietnam, but the only difference is it's kind of like a roller reverse. It's like he, he's, he's like my company sergeant like a Master Sergeant and. Whereas I was a platoon sergeant news, probably, you know, machine gunner. Yup, it's great. You're trying to figure out where you stand given the roles you play in movies. Walls played military flip-flop? Yeah, up American dress are a little bit for and what it is because people that don't know, there's a whole American dresser association for Davidson's American dressers actually it's not a trade name. It's a generic name for fairly big highway bike that would be loaded up like with the side panels and the tour box on the back where you can have a couple of changes of underwear and your, you know your your ring, ring gear. You know anything little extra you've got to carry, but it would be also more comfortable for a real long trip on your character is taking a long trip. Yeah, it's only out to the west coast amd back the two of them, and I don't want him to go because he's got some physical disabilities, and I think I just have to do this to, you know, for my my soul. And I'm told by my daughters to go just to get out of here, you're not doing any good, you know, because of his drinking, which is because his wife started that because his wife had cancer, then she died and he just can't get out of it. And we see those flashbacks in the movie with Gina Gershon playing, which is very touching. And yet he's going out there to meet a son. He didn't know have, which is very moving because it's not an aimless easy rider trip. No, there's a direction and it really isn't out to discover America or see on the east coast or something. Yeah, like them. It is different than that. What was the attraction to you? What made you say? I want to do this movie? I, I don't know. I just liked the characters like the story, like the dialogue. I thought there was some good humor in there. I thought it was funny. I mean it to me it had that same road humor that Bush casting the Sundance kid Nicholson and Randy Quaid in the last detail, you know, that kind of stuff going on of the strange of weird characters. They made. On the road, you know, Bruce darn. I love him in this. Yeah, all these people. They meet our kind of the rough. Yeah, yeah, exactly in. They're kind of endearing and funny and different. It's good to see back in this big screen that's here because you had been doing TV stuff that one day I was watching major crimes there. You were popping up as Mary McDonald's, rat bastard, ex husband. You know, this is this is how this happened was because Mary McDonald, they needed this character. They wanted to bring back. And ex husband of hers, and she's well what about Tom bear your? And they went, what's interesting, let's check, you know. And so I knew her and I knew to other people on the show and which was kind of a nice reunion. But then they had so much fun with the character. The writers just kept bringing me back. So it was kind of like an archive suppose. Yeah. And he was kind of funny. Its own bizarre way. Yeah. The business of being an actor is you create little mini families. Don't you. Oh yeah, to movie. And then sometimes the family breaks up and you get back together, but you still remember this feeling that you have. Yeah, yeah, that's true. That's true. What where did it start for you? We're, we're, we're, you come from originally, we'll really from the south side of Chicago. And they ended up queens, moved green, which is. Did tough neighborhoods. Different..
