"On behalf of Alliance defending freedom. Why don't you explain your case? It's not just Mary Kate Marshall that you're representing, but many female athletes here And this has to do with keeping women sports for biological women, right? That's right. This is all about fair play. So earlier this year, Idaho became the first state of the nation has a fairness and women's Sports Act, which is just designed to ensure that if you have a girls or women sports team, but only biological females compete on that team. Seems like it ought to be relatively simple and relatively straightforward. But unfortunately, just a couple weeks after Idaho passed that law, the LL you filed a federal lawsuit challenging the law in federal court. The alliance defending Freedom, has asked permission from the court to represent the interest of female athletes in the litigation, not just Mary Kate, but Madison, Kenyon and frankly, the interests of all female athletes who want to compete on a level playing field. We want to see the ball protected. And can

"To see the photo of Mary Kate and her sisters in church as Paul Bears go to the mall thought or GE, where you confined extras related to most of our stories on the moth radio hour. Next up Gail Breslow. Gail thinks of what you're about to hear as her Genesis story. She told it at a moth night in Boston, where we partner with pure X and public radio Station W. O R. Here's Gail liven the moth. Thank you. So it's 1964 and I'm nine years old. You can do the math if you'd like. My family has decided to move to Munich, Germany for a year. And they decide since I'm only nine years old, I might as well go to the local folks. Ula. I hardly speak any German. But I'll figure it out as I go along, and it doesn't really matter because its ninth I'm nine years old. It's fourth grade. So on the way to school the first day. My mother's walking me over there and she says As casually as she can. You know? You might not want to let anybody know that you're Jewish. And I, you know, I nod my head. I mean, I was only nine years old, but I knew about the Nazis. Every year in Hebrew school. Mrs Preston who had survived the Holocaust would come in and talk with us around. You keep poor about what had happened to her and her family, so I understood. I just kind of nodded off. We went to school. So we get there and I'm taken to my class. All the other fourth graders. And I'm sort of ushered up to the front of the room. To the teacher's desk, and her name is frail Specs Debtor and she's on this big platform. Her desk is on this big platform kind of like the stages. She calls me up on onto the big platform, and she pulls out this form to start filling out. And first question goes Nama. And all the other kids are just kind of sitting there. I can kind of feel their eyes on my back behind me like Nama. I don't speak much German, but I get that one. So I'm like Male breast like giving my name. She writes it down. Next question. Like, okay, I got that one too. I'm feeling pretty good. So I give her my address. She writes it down. Next question. Really Dione. Like I can not believe us. I just kind of shrug my shoulders. She says, Really G own in this louder voice like if she says it louder. All I'll understand what she means again. I kind of shrugged my shoulders like yeah. I don't know that one. And she doesn't speak English, but she tries she likes that is Really G on And I'm like frozen and I hear some kid behind me. Kind of snicker like, you know, boy, she's dumb. And I think when I'm supposed to do with my mother's told me, Don't tell them your religion. Here it is. I've been here five minutes. She's asking me to pronounce this in front of the whole class. And I think I could lie. And I think about all I've heard in Hebrew school about all those people who you know, died instead of, you know, renouncing their religion and like I can't do it. Plus, what would I say? I mean, what am I Saigo. Jewish And she goes v Petya. I mean, I had said it a softly as I could. So I said, a little louder. Still in English. Jewish Kind of gets up out of receipt a little bit and frowns and goes. You do? I'm like. Yuda and now she's like bellowing at the top of her lungs do best UDA and I feel like out in the hall. They can hear and I hear some kid behind me. Gasp! I mean Munich, Germany, 1960 for these kids have probably never met anybody Jewish and here I am first day of school and I square my shoulders and I go. Yeah, it's been Yuda. And she writes it down. Nothing happens. It turns out, she wanted to know because there were two religious classes in the school. There was the cattle Alicia and the Protestant and she had to figure out which one to put me in. So so I learned a lot about Catholicism that year. But you know what? After that, I decided I wasn't ever going to try to pass for anything that I wasn't because sometimes you just have to square your shoulders and say, Yeah. He's been Yura. Thank you very much..

I can think of something that y'all have done that made me laugh so hard because me and Christian would have never done and wondering. If you're GONNA say it. Should just say that. Into the bookstore. And dislike picked out books together every other time. We go to the bookstore. We go to like Barnes and noble and each book that is amazing. Every Valentine's they go to orange. Get a book and that is like they love it. Under, read so much. I mean Christian with the Barnes and noble. We would be like and the bake session. Fallon Bob Goffin's and Franklin and then we'd get like way too many books that and we'd probably read half of. The York get like books. I wouldn't think of getting. Fiction. It's awesome, so it's funny, because Valentine's AIDS like we go Barnes Noble, and then we just wonder around by ourselves for like two hours. We realized passion. It's kind of ironic. Will come the other. It'd be like. Hey, you can think of this one. So say are y'all introverts. Yes, both of y'all have definitely. I would deadly. They are injured. Sue and somebody actually asks. What's it like being introverts married? So that's what you. You go together. Individually. That's exactly. So funny all right now. Since we injure extrovert once Yeltsin eager numbers seven for me, which a lot of people say I'm the only introverted seven. They know it's true, but like you're such a seven like no question that you're seven, but you're definitely introverted. That's really cool Combo. Are you eight lane or six wing? I used to serve the six wing, but lately I've definitely. We've been honing in on your eight. To think of it as like my actual arms and wings. This is. Getting, very. Young I've been getting just like with my friend seven weeks six, but then like with work and everything I've just had me more aid side. I understand that. Once had tested A. You're not a eight. I don't know readies necessarily the right term to use I. think this kind of goes back to like saying. Oh, she's the one in the sense like every day. It's a choice. Yeah, and so when you feel like you're getting married like you or decided there the personnel up there the personally be married, and then once you get married. Is that daily choice of growing closer sticking to it in forgiving love like doing what you have to do to like? Stay married and build your relationship and love each other and so i. don't know in the sense of like like when you say ready. It's like you prepare something. Get Ready, but there's nothing to prepare except for your own relationship, yeah! Yeah you're ownership with Christ in your Iheart, that's really cool I. Feel like it's similar as whenever you decide like to have a baby. It's kind of like well. I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Like I don't know, we ever feel like prepared in some things, but it is daily choice. Yeah, for sure. That's a good I was digging that because I mean. She works on her fashion brands. She doesn't really go out as much rob. You're out on the scene all the time. You've so interesting I've seen him out and he is suicide party boy. I don't think I've ever met her of never seen her hours. I know everybody in New York and she really is probably most private celebrity in in the world of Celebre Taj. I think I just. I can't remember a Time magazine or arise. I do think though. I don't think they grew apart. I think they knew this. None of them have changed. Always liked to go out and she's always like to stay home. I was worried about this marriage from day one. We wish him the best. "I did to also jab big twist at the end. Do you guys watch it gonNA spoil it but some big character dies and then he doesn't and then it like you do of get taken for a ride a little bit you do. And here's my here's my thought on that. I I was like okay. The movie like shouldn't have done that because I was bullshit. It's like a dream sequence. It's always like dumb however Sapphire kill up some characters. Everyone else has done it Suzanne. Jk rollings did it. Dr Arnn killed off like if you WANNA be a legitimate fantasy series like fucking kill Carlisle. We don't need him like I agree wholeheartedly. Emotional resonance yeah. That's true which brings me to my final question about this whole breaking down. Partout is what genre. I guess we can talk movie and book. Do you think this story works. Best in because it starts is like kind of a coming of age romance tale and then it turns into this like science fiction any world of legends and myths and whatever and then it turns into action at the variant. Which worked best for you kate the CGI is too bad for me to say action I would say the first movie with like the Super Awkward Colored Toned Yearning. Romance is probably the best of the lion. How would you rank the movies from best to worst? Sorry I know I did. Spot a yeah. It's hard to even recall now. Every time we end an episode I hit recording. I just talking hurts in my brain. I think the first one is so good. It's a classic I think. That's my favorite also. Because I was just dying to see all these people come to live and like the whole world on that cheesy stub seconds. Got To be the one from last week. Part one really wow. I'm not sure maybe take the bag. Is this movie. I don't I think everything else falls in the middle. Where my second and third or so forgettable yes. Yeah I can't actually now on the spot gun and I can't remember what happens in the second movie something for sure. Now fire member there. Those blink chapters hell okay so final take on breaking on. I still think it's the best book she actually made. It happen in that one. It was smoking but I thought the movies were pretty bad. Yeah agreed so even though you may think young audience members that this would be the last do cringe on twilight next week. We're extending it a little bit more. There's no celebrity news so again but we're going to talk about like the extended toilet. Can't actually kate night literally can't believe our luck with the timing of our conversations and like everyone else talking about it as well you could say it's a coincidence but I think we're just trendsetters. Yes there's actually a lot of twilight happening right now in twilight discussion along with midnight. Sign which we're GONNA talk about a little bit next week we're also gonNA talk about all the other like bullshit things Stephanie. Meyer has released. She did a gender swapped version of twilight where she literally just switched all the names and switch the pronouns. And so that yeah. We're GonNa talk about the something life of Bree Tanner which is a short story that she wrote about some other. Rando Vampire already. You don't have to realize what else I also WanNa talk about. A Modern Day casting of highlight light. Because I was starting to throw out a couple of names. I'm really. I really feel strongly about one character in particular. That's just meant for this role. But we're gonNA recast the whole thing as if it was going to be made in twenty twenty And then as a Joe. We're absolutely not doing this because me and you both skimmed both the book and moving but ask the Vampire K. A ask the maistre. We don't have the knowledge Nearly but you can ask us anything and then also Um Kate Nice when our days on tick talk and there is an enormous twilight. Take Talk Resurgence. I couldn't hear the final moment of this movie without thinking that dance at like to that beautiful piano ballad so tick Tock. Us perhaps ruin toilet for me and kate both or just going to wrap up this whole category quickly. Dented twilight universe. Yes we're almost there you guys and then we'll have to come up with something else to fill our time. We might start watching. I don't know what WH- Babysitters Club or reading that or something. Let us not have suggestions? Okay final category. Let's bring back Amelia for from the teabag slash unanswerable questions. Emilia start off. Okay so I don't. I don't think anyone else here watches survivor right. Unfortunately not no okay making sure but last I guess okay. So we're recording on Thursday and the survivor season. Forty finale was last. Night's an Omega is just I love survivor and I just WANNA know why. Survivor isn't as popular on twitter. As like the bachelor because it seems like last night it was popular but throughout the season. I feel like every time the bachelor's on it just takes over twitter throughout its entire run but when survivors on it's like sometimes it'll trend. Sometimes it won't and I just don't understand that's unanswerable. Question is why isn't as popular on twitter as the bachelor I feel like it should be. I don't know. Is this honestly a great question? Because I saw you tweeting about it last night. I think as I was watching. Listen to your heart. Actually the Bachelor spinoff nice and I don't know there must be some audience. There must be some corner of twitter. That's survivor twitter right or is that literally that does not exist. I think there is but they're just not as vocal as bachelor nation. I guess which is wild to me because as much as I love Bachelor nation and I enjoy those shows survivors. Just it wins in every single cat. It's not a contest. Yeah we have a question for you. Who doesn't watch either because when Amelia tweets her sassy things but the bachelor I get a kick out of that. I know every name. I know every expression in like the videos that you posted ever can Yousef enjoyment out of of those things because the survivor once Amelia. Anybody else or it's tweeting about those names. I kind of just like my eyes gloss over so yes. Amelia's twitter covers the bachelor's great and I find it hilarious without any context. However here's my take I think survivor is less popular and social media. Because I think it's better and people like to watch things that are bad and they like the chaos and horrible insane drama of the Bachelor true and like I feel like survivor people to say about it. Because it's like actually like enthralling. Does that make any sense? People like that. It's true also it makes sense and because Love Island. Twitter is so big not in the states but like when that comes on right I follow those hashtags is like yeah like messy shows. I should say because it's good. It's good in different way where a survivor is like berry like strategic and like you know it's like player based so I feel like there's lasts like brassiness truly like Gano. Get all mixed up on twitter totally. I mean I feel like half the time I mean. Enjoy the bachelor. But it's kind of like an ironic enjoyment of it. Because it's it's so a lot of it is retrograde and like embarrassing and. I'm just like yes more more of that trashy dom reality. Tv I love it. Yeah agreed okay. Next Question Kate this week on the cut. Sangita Singh Kurtz published an article called. Are you an airborne girl or a legless girl and kind of along with twilight. Lord of the Rings has kind of had a little resurgence. I think people are just really having a good time revisiting kind of these like safe comfortable like stories so a lot of people have also been talking about Lord of the Rings lately and this whole article was about how legless very formative figure in her youth. Which I've talked about on this podcast. And she basically talks about how she interviewed. All these CO WORKERS. Some of them are legless girls. Some of them are airborne girls and I don't have a problem with the peace but I have a problem with everyone tweeting and being like well. I was a legless girl then I grew up and I'm like wait so everyone was like. Oh now that I'm older and I'm mature. I like more and more like. Do you like dirt now. Do you like men who look like they smell. How dare you I side with all those men and women who are saying that level is like your first crush? You like the random blond kid in the second grade and then Air Graham. Are you say heir Gordon and I know that's the correct way to say it? I have been mispronouncing. It my whole life anyway aired Gore. Whatever is the the lake shaggy bad boys? You meet when you're like in your twenties at a bar and he's got all the scrawlings at the long hair he's like dirty and probably will not be that nice to you. It's like a total evolution. It's just nature see. I feel like you don't want that evolution. Well it happened. Maybe it's a personal problem anyway. Disrespecting legless on twitter and I have a problem side just had this. I had to talk about it now. You're on my way baby. Thank you along the way. Wow I mean it came out when I was in middle school and I remember everyone Orlando Bloom. It's like that Video Wendy Williams She's like she is. The moment team was the moment. Like Orlando Bloom was due thousand in four or whatever your Oh my God Viggo. Mortensen has never been the moment. I'm sorry Oh please I do love that discussion. Though I love definitely read it. Okay so final question this comes from Alison Snowflake at Alley Block nine. She asked and this is for the group. Because I know y'all have this if you could only report on either throttles or newsworthy. Wildlife for the rest of your career. Which would you pick? And why great question my answer? Thank God for you. Alison snowflake is news worthy wildlife. I have never left harder than when Kate brought feral hogs time and the Bald Eagle like I can think of so many. I don't want to ever talk about Bella. Thorne to- sake for that matter outside and the question I would give all of that up to just be like an wildlife reporter right. Be like today in deer podcast without question. It's wildlife no like not close one hundred percent one hundred thing is also wildlife in no way is like part of the leg is part of the brand but no one told us that that should happen. Stop today this is supposed to be a pop culture podcast in every episode where we can like so this thing happened in Florida where all animals better known stopped yet. Arctic it's most random bit and I truly love it for that I love it too. Okay thank you guys so much for listening. Thank you our producer Kelli Canola..

"Bad news for Mary Kate Olsen you know that divorce she wanted to get from her husband Oliver Sarkozy via us he forced her out of their New York City apartment to the judge ruled that it wasn't an essential matter because divorce proceedings are on hold until the pandemic they can you know she was trying to get like an emergency divorce via yeah so I guess a source says she's reunited with her twin sister Ashley in a group of people outside the city like come on in sounds like a full house

Partly the I dunno you go like that and we follow each other on twitter after sliding them the yellow. There you go we might say. The question is who's thirstiest. Though out of these four people I might be a thirstiest. Yeah I'M GONNA go ahead and say Kelly Rowland not being Thursday. I think that's one of Earth's Marvel's it's not a third strap that is literally just incredible. Meg The stallion pretty thirsty. But I don't want to you know I don't WanNa turn her off to posting more of these so I think very well done artistic Jason Derulo cheesiest. He is how he gets my vote. You guys I am sorry. These tax are really just a another level of Corny so he if I had a golden corn statue he would get it. He wins the award. Man for Jason Derulo. Which has a roasted him. I'm going to go with this. Yeah he's making like millions of dollars on brand deals on tick tock pick who the thirsty. It's not who's you like okay. I like Meg Ryan the most and Jason. Derulo thirsty before we go. Apparently there's a bonus pick of one of my favorite hot chicks were Joe. I needed Nina..

"Forget I'm in? Love to have an opinion about rob patents and. I don't think he really leans into the humor. I truly believe he thinks people who are working out during the time are like not cool and are part of whatever problem. He's created his mind why we get in trouble on twitter. I'm not in trouble am I haven't looked today. I think keeping it really G on twitter so moving on I down look incredible as we can all agree but guess who isn't here for her weight loss you guys. I doubt impersonators. When I saw I think to myself is that what people are going to expect. Now they gonNa want a slim adult. We haven't seen her perform slim yet so definitely people's minds what they're gonNa want from an adult so I just that's the way of Hugh thought. Did you look at the picture and think long after follows suit now? I definitely put the doughnut down. I'm sorry what that was so cringing put was actually from ITV's this morning show. Yeah I don't I don't agree with that at all. I think you go down Hollywood boulevard. You see people impersonating Elvis at any stage of their own life you know. It's not like they impersonate him when he's younger and they lose much weight it's like no they just decide to impersonate him when he's in. Vegas one hundred percent agree with you. I feel like you impersonate a Celeb-. There's people who impersonate Michael Jackson. When he was black and Michael Jackson when he was like you know what I mean it just depends on the era you any Arabic air seventies eighties nineties as a lot of different Michael. I think people worry about what she sounds like right. I don't think people are going to the Adele concert to see what she looks like. It's more about like her singing. The songs right is there a big market for an Adele? Impersonator isn't really. I don't really know why you need one. I mean these impersonators can make a lot of money. I just think if you're a Robert Pattinson impersonator right now. Life just got a whole lot easier you are just coasting at this point easy peasy and finally somebody poor this town a glass of water because people.

"Nightly you're leading on Dell impersonators. Say hello to my Ruppel Nina and hunter everybody all right. Okay in devastating news to me. Obviously Mary Kate. Olsen is getting divorced. We have that in common. I'm so excited about it. Her husband linear which I know how to say because I went to a French school even though they sell the phonetically is kicking her out of their apartment during pandemic dynamic guys. Thanks this rocked me. Yesterday I could barely get through the day knowing my girl was about to be inconvenienced and also I don't understand. Why is he the one that has the apartment like why is he trouser back is going to say like how does he get to determine who stays and who goes? I? Shouldn't this be a joint decision. He allowed to just kick her out. I don't think well if they had a prenuptial agreement then that apartment have been his and she could've moved into his apartment. That could have been one reason because it does seem like for some reason. He has control or this apartment. I just liked that. She's filing for an emergency divorce yet. Like that is the funniest sounding thing in the world to me. She doing that Bill Handy. Because if she doesn't do that than he's legally allowed to get rid of her stuff if she's not out by a certain date which. I also just don't understand like I guess. He tried to terminate their lease. But like why is there? He told me the lease without her knowledge. But why are we this your move all of her belongings so but this is the thing she supposed to be out by. May Eighteenth obviously coming up really quick GONNA have. This is what I understand. I mean covert nineteen is going on right now. It's like how can she move by the by May Eighteenth? She might not be able to hire movers. There's there's a lot of like that are going on in the environment that are preventing her from doing. It's also just think why are releasing still. She's got a billion dollars. Why don't we own this place? That's very true? She should be used to work in a little faster. I'm thinking they gave her a month. She should be able to get it done in a New York minute. That's just me. I'm not just a you. I don't know why that made me genuinely bile I'm Gonna I'm GonNa don't know either Morgan. What's sweet little reminders? They did that gem of a movie. I love my girls love her. I'm saying that she does have enough money to make everything happen. She could be on a private island right now. She wants to be justice. Get outgrew that is a good button because what we have seriously important things to get to like Batman. Okay obviously have a muffin. Top because ROB Pattinson refusing to work in the quarantine he tells G Q. I think if you're working out all the time you are a part of the the right character. It really is more jobs for me. For some reason I cannot find. This boy is that man I love. I like Robert Pants. I like any of these kind of like weirdly mysterious kind of Weirdos in the acting industry the same reason. I like Shiloh buff. You think. He's a great choice and you can also into the shape. I think his point is. He's setting this this precedent among other celebrities who are creating this lifestyle like look. We're still working out. We're still doing this. And it encourages people to maybe unhealthy behavior. And I understand that. But it's like there's no right. There's no wrong right now. So for him to even think that like doing this is all of a sudden. He's a hero. I don't think that that's the case. I think it's just like just be quiet and do what you do. Yeah he's very was being facetious though. I felt like he was making a joke. I didn't feel like he was necessarily meaning this to be like the end. All be all or be concrete in it. Just it felt like he was joking humor really. I don't think he's a funny..

"They cache food carry up to forty seats at a time and their expandable esophagus and storing amendment hiding place to eat during times when is limited. So they're quite like industrious animals here and have a like large appetite. Yeah the diversity. Personally in arches national park in the wildlife is just so amazing I would say that's one of my favorite parts but I'm not going to because I think we time that we actually share. What our favorite part of Arches National Park is my favorite? So it's the part of the episode where we share with each other our favorite thing about artists. We haven't told you other what our favorite things are. So it's a heartwarming surprise for both of us and I love it. Brad love set. Do you WanNa talk about what your favorite part about artists now. This is a tough one. 'cause arches is so beautiful and so diverse. I mean all these animals are really amazing amazing and the way that they survive is so specific to them. That's really amazing an amazing fact. But I'm not gonNA say that's my favorite I'm GonNa be really basic and say that the delicate arch is my favorite. How original I know how original but I just come up with that grey t-shirt and that teacher and so funny because like I think of it like stopping so delicate get over it Right Oh actually I was never very clear. Yeah Yeah Yeah. So it's stopping delicate arch. Get over it well. Well yeah there's a lot of meanings behind ended a lot a lot of layers their own leaders but yeah I mean. Delicate was just so beautiful. I mean stunning fund trail. Like hike. you you use those laws scrambling and is fun and we actually took some of those shots of those like records spas. When we got up there we had these little mini anyone? Yeah because we just visited the distillery in Breckenridge Colorado. Yeah Yeah that was wonderful so I think my favorite was probably the next day during the snowstorm and just like seeing it and drinking that site and because of his exquisite. and that's kind of surprising for me because I I'm I'm not much of a snow person easily annoys me. One thing you were soaking it in. Yeah I was hot up But I just thought it looked really amazing and I've never been in like a snowy desert environment before so it was an experience in incredible normally only like snow. If it's like a ski destination that can make a couple days and leave and go back someplace where there's no snow. Yeah I would've loved to go to Canyon lands out. have been amazing MHM because it was just so closed but because it was knowing Share one snowplough between the two parks and because arches was more visit. They were taking care of them or they couldn't really get to the canyon outside so I'll have to go back Well actually we will have to go back to say. Yeah Yeah please take me but I know that was it was so cool we got like the entrance of Canyon lands pretty much long snowy drive. I was working or we couldn't get stuck up here because we have the RV obviously and it's not an ideal vehicle to drive through snow now but it it worked out fine so I think we should also talk about three things that we would recommend bringing to arches national park water water lots of water and desert environment always water. Yeah and I know that silly. Could you should bring water every national park but this one is one of those ones even when we win it was cool but just it's cool does not mean your body is age rating You have to hydrate when you're in any desert lerman no matter what temperature it is. Yeah you really do and it can meet us out of two because if you're there like when we were there on the Snowy Day and your body doesn't have like the most obvious reaction where it's like thirsty or whatever but like even even if it's cold and chilly and snowy and wet or whatever like still you need to drink. Water also sunscreen Sun Protection. Hats sunglasses sunglasses all that. Because there's really no true cover here. It's wide open. Expose desert especially the persons of trails that are on these wide wide vast slick rock. So it's just you and like the direct sun and it's pretty high elevation so it hits you and impacts you more directly. Yeah and this isn't like one of those huge park where you're going on a lot of trips. Now if you back like backpacking and like back country traveling. That's one thing like don't like you. There's more you have to bring but like really like snacks. Water and Sun Protection. Yeah a little bit of recommended not really heard on records Baca okay shooters. Yeah sure I mean if you want a but The other thing too like if you are going into the backcountry or going wing off the main trails and stuff be sure and bring maps. It helps to print out maps or bring a map book or something because unsurprisingly entreprise only. There's really no service so you can't be using like your phone. GPS or anything like that so it would not be good to be lost out there. It's since it's kind of this plane desert Landscape there's no like distinct landmarks to help guide you necessarily if you are like. I'm fortunate enough to be lost. Their so best to you know over. Prepare MAPQUEST DOT COM download download. A map yeah and I think it's safe to say that arch is one of the most iconic destinations and the tire country It's really one of those points where you just get to really enjoy it and watch it and take it all in Yeah and it is one of those places that more than lives up to the hype. This iconic psychedelic blake the delicate arch and the rest of the park. Itself is absolutely worth the visit and then also like no matter higher expectations are. It's going to Going to exceed them like we have incredible time here and I cannot wait to go back. You've been listening to park. Excuse me I'm sorry. We closed down early. Because there's not enough. Attendance sounds great. Tell me that I now want to yelp about it and I don't even. I never do that we would like tavern for a nightcap afterwards. Yeah so that was. It's kind of fun on alternative. I think although nightcap might be a stretch like this wasn't anything snazzier fancy I think you end up having some sort of red bull shot or something like what did you do. You remember you. Had you had something and you're like you were familiar with what it was and I'm like you seem a little too comfortable with this red bull drink like I I mean if Let's say a yeager bomb. I don't know I can't remember what it was. I think it was a it was a vegas bomb authors Reagan. Go bankrupt and a Vegas Bond Bradberry. Yes red bull and stuff. I can't tell you because it's been too many years since they've actually had one ordered one. Yeah for the best. I don't remember what I had. But it was at. This place called world-famous what he's tavern which is okay. The name is appealing appealing. But I think it's like not at all world famous obviously like I know one outside of probably what it is. It was perfectly fine now now and like good for kind of basic drinks was a little rough steak and like would seem to have a place where you like. Just go up to the counter. I don't know how a whiskey and coke or something like that or Vegas bomb. Apparently yeah and now. We've pretty much wrap things up on our time and Moab and arches But we're GONNA talk about animals walls and wildlife and ecology right after this quick break..

Yes we've touched on the geography and the landscape year radio a little bit it but we want to get more into the details of arches national park and what makes this place so incredible from a historical perspective. Yeah absolutely so arches. This place took a long process to form and get where we are today like Mother Nature really took her time with this one. And you can't rush art like this. It's if it's too good no not at all. In fact many of these are just hundreds of millions of years to form and it all started when this part of Utah was actually under a C- Yeah I think the best part is always start underwater in some form because we learned similar things when you're at Carlsbad caverns in New Mexico and Guadalupe Mountains in Texas and how both of those were under sub tropical waters at one point and then Carl amazing they turned out. Yeah that's so true and just like those parks Things started to take shape ones. The sea began to evaporate leaving salt beds throughout the southeastern Utah. So over time these sell pads were once again covered in water and other sediments as rivers rivers began to flow through the region. Meanwhile this area turned into a desert environment during that drastic period so basically while T. rexes and boss Raptors terrorized poor urban wars Utah was steadily transforming to a wild landscape of sandstone art. Yeah the sandstone intake shape at arches. Right away though I it was all covered by lots of sediment dement material which was also heavy made the lower salt beds heat up and actually turn into a liquid basically like lava. Yeah so things started to shift around to the earth and some that liquid salt burst through the upper layers creating these salt domes which made curves in the sandstone and but this foundation place erosive wind and water over the years then began to chip away at the salt and sediment in exposed sandstone underneath arches throughout the park are many different shapes and sizes. But they're all continuing to erode today yes breath and there's a lot to take in the whole process. Sounds like a super elaborate and complicated recipe from like a serious cookbook. That's as a phone book. It's really take a long time and to make these things come out of the ground. Turn out good takes time. Yeah in terms of if you know Copa comparison terms. This isn't one of like Rachel. Raise thirty minute like microwave meals sales or whatever. It's more like one of those Julia Child recipes that takes like a full day to create but the whole shopping carts birth ingredients. I've never even heard of perfect comparison. Yeah thanks so when I get confused I. This is a safe space for ten to compare things to meal preparation and it really can of calms me down and put things in perspective respective and I can I can like go with it. Are you relaxed enough to talk more about the history of arches. Yeah I think so. Thank you for checking sure. Thing conditioned Lava Lake Salt and sandstone. Sculpting Arches has more history relating to humans as well right history so people I started living in this region some ten thousand years ago which feels like this morning compared to the two three hundred or so million years when this place started to take shape but but still that's it's a long time ago. Yeah native peoples like Industrial Pablo INS and Fremont tribes. I came here to hunt farm and gather the grew their crops like squash beans and corn. I mean all sounds very similar to like when we talked about Mesa Verde actually. Yeah it really does. The crop does exactly road the plateaus all of it very Mesa Verde e but a big difference is that this area wasn't abroad. Play mysteriously abandoned overnight Lake Verde now it actually had steady human. I'm an occupancy in some form or another ever since then You in Ot Indians lived here as well followed by Spanish missionaries and European Americans. The Mormons that up shop here for a bit before realizing how impossibly difficult West farm in this harsh desert desert terrain but other answers definitely give it a go like John Walker love who mentioned earlier right and then finally after centuries of human occupancy success I thought Utah locals finally got wise the idea that Oh hey these sandstone arches it's earned incredibly unique and special. Maybe they deserve some federal protection. I love are just got. Its start as a national monument. It's a heartwarming story of Passionate Moab Moab residents trying to get the attention of the federal government and the rare example of like it actually working out. It's it's beautiful. This Moab newspaper writer named John Taylor was so inspired by the sandstone formations pretty much right in his backyard. That he wrote about them enough to catch the attention of the government enough so that President Hoover designated the region National Monument in nineteen twenty nine. Like what an uplifting story. It's this this is so rare. It's usually just kind of complicated and tedious but this is breath this is beautiful. Yeah even more uplifting it was upgraded to a national park in nineteen seventy one with more than seventy six thousand acres of land. And today. It's one of the most beloved loved him visit National Parks in the country..

"Let me tell you about Pete who loved hockey and always wanted to play in the NHL. Pete played since he was three and begged his mom to let them stay on the ice. Apply some nights. He even slept in his hoppy skates Pete practiced and practiced until when he was forty seven. Pete realized he just wasn't that good so so he threw in the trash. But then you heard how diko proud partner of NHL good save money on car insurance so he switched and saved a bunch so it all worked doubt. Let me just say that things to Arches National Park in Utah. I know officially have a t shirt with an image of myself on it and even better. It's an image of a photo. I took a view looking all artsy by the arch. Yeah it's a great but oh got a lot of love and instagram. When I first posted it it was taken me from behind? Kind of gazing off at at this iconic arch in the park and it was transformed into a park landy at t shirt for our online merch store with the caption. Get over it. As as in like yeah. We're close picture myself on it. Get over it or you know get over it like the fact that this is a massive arch sure. Yeah it's a double entendre. I guess I remember having this like hilarious interaction with the briefs Data Coffee Shop in Chicago a few months ago I was wearing the shirt of myself at arches doesn't want to do and I was patiently waiting for my coffee or it was timber so I think I was getting a pumpkin spice Latte Jay. Since that's the time of year where I exclusively eat pumpkin spice flavors flavored things in the briefs came up to me and he asked me about the shirt because he was from Utah and it caught his eye because obviously the arch naturally and then I had to Explained to him that the shirt is an image of myself in he was like. Oh Wow I had no idea and we both had a good laugh and hopefully he was laughing having with me and not at me but I. I wasn't clear on either way. The shirt accomplished what we wanted to do. Catch People's attention and promote the PODCAST. Yeah National Parks. I know with gray and honestly honestly. I'm super proud to be a human billboard for Arches National Park and I'm brand this park lane or production of iheartradio radio. We packed up our stuff in Chicago. Sold or loft and now we're talking in the country with our dog Finn in an RV exploring America's national parks. Today's episode. It's about art. Does National Park in Utah when it comes to conic national images for National Parks Dogs Arches is right up there with the Grand Canyon and then there's like old faithful yellowstone and the bat cave at Carlsbad caverns but especially the delicate arch which is so popular that is featured on. Utah's license plate. Yes it's a biggie. This place is super significant and a big bucket list priority for both of us once we started living and traveling in the RV and it was actually one of the first national parks. We visited once we made that official leap from Chicago to RV. Oh yeah yeah that's right and fittingly. It was the second National Park. Revisited on our country road trip after Gateway Arch National Park in Saint Louis. So he literally went from arch wjr to arch. Yeah we did and that was actually super inadvertent. We didn't play a map but like we realize once we got two arches new tower like wait. A second we went from the Gateway Arch. The arch is like that's magical. Yeah works for a lot of reasons not just because it was poetic but the whether the time of the year was just perfect too. I know it really was. We Got Utah Arches located in southeastern Utah in early December. I think it was literally like December first I and it was chilly. At first it was pretty brisk but also super sunny and especially comfortable for hiking and light jackets. And I was wearing my doc Martin's which are really not at all appropriate hiking at higher since they're about as heavy heavy as and bills and just really cumbersome but I wish guide and like there are now on T. shirt with myself so yes but for the hikes they were. They were fine We didn't do anything too long or too strenuous. Just some of the big poplar blur spots. There yeah nothing too hard core. We add a limited amount of time at artists that we really wanted to maximize it by visiting the big icon trails and and we have to start with the delicate art show. Of course you cannot come to arches and not do this trail should be like priority number one in for it was. I think going to arches not doing delicate allocate arch would be like going to universal studios and skipping Harry Potter world which is really the only reason to go to universal studios these days. That's a little bit of a burn there. Oh I think you know how you feel about universal studios spoiler alert. Were not enthusiastic about it. Harry Potter world is another story though annual anyway the delicate arch trail is a must and not just because it's featured on the license plates. Were t shirts. It's popular for really good reason. It's the perfect length. The perfect the amount of comfort elevation gain. And it's one of those trails as just like an epic while factor grand finale. Once you come around the final bend then you see the arch itself surrounded by hikers. Getting photos I mean it was just like this beautiful landscape of the Lasalle Mountains in the background. Everything all all of it. I know it's really one of those kind of grand finale trails. You walk up to it. It's a fun trail and then you around the corner it's like wow my God. This is overwhelming in the best. That's possible way and it's no wonder this place is so iconic and this arch in particular. It's photogenic is how and especially in cloudless sunny day like when we visited where everything's just so pristine and majestic I loved it really is a male An amazing sight. But let's start talking about the trail leading up to this trails. It all started for us at the Visitor Center in Moab just off the main road which was super close to the RV Park where we reserved served a couple of nights the visitor centers at the base of this massive plateau called the Colorado Plateau. And the there's main park road that really twists and turns up to the top Apapa Toe. Where more than two thousand arches are scattered across the colorful landscape? Yeah some of those archers very tiny and then some are huge and You uh-huh many of them you can see from your car or V And then there's some that you can't see at all Then there are ones like the delicate arches so major that there's like a parking lot by the trail ahead that fills up fast. So get their earliest specially if you have an RV because you need to snack one of those Few large vehicle parking spots. Yeah you really do. Fortunately we were fine right and we're able to get spot. No problem and I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that we were visiting off season. Since most of the park's one point four million annual visitors there's tend to visit in the spring or early fall. We were right at the cost of winter and like literally. It snowed a lot the very next day. So it was we we. You really locked out with the timing on arches although the snow totally messed up our plans visit kenyan-led social park nearby but that wasn't total number in like terms of arches arches specifically the weather worked out perfect interface. Yeah it really wasn't ideal data visit we mentioned in our Mesa Verde episode from season. One that the park they are felt similar to the Park Road Arches and I I stay in by. I think they're both these lungs exactly roads that start. By visitor centers honors then meander up to the top of these plateaus mesas and artists is very Mesa Verde like except last green more desert. Yeah if you drive along this main park road. It's super easy to find. All of the parks trails in everything is like either directly along the road or right off the route including including the delicate arch right. So it's very convenient. Very easy to navigate here which is so refreshing especially driving in an RV. And you don't want to be like an fiddling around her going down these narrow off the beaten path roads so wants to get to delegate arch and you park you start the trail and one of the first things you see that we saw was this tiny ranch home we tiny tiny like it's like the OJ. Tiny house and it was built by John Wesley Wolf in the late eighteen eighteen hundreds. This was the time when ranchers were migrated into the area in droves well before arches became a national monument in nineteen twenty nine and then ultimately upgraded a to a national park in nineteen seventy one and remnants of their inhabitants. Is still there today as we with this. ITTY bitty little Rancho Gad's ads crazy to imagine people living in this environment It was so much more desolate at the time than it is today and especially in such small living quarters. The House was super small. Ma I mean it makes our. RV Look like a huge like mansion. He now and that's really saying something. It was basically just like one rickety little room and this was for like multiple multiple people which is unfathomable. That's not a lot of personal space. Apparently no definitely not like it's literally no bigger than most people's bathrooms but you know the trail continues on for about a mile and a half after that All the way up to the arch itself There's like study inclines. It's moderately difficult like trail especially since it's like in Drexel night the entire time without any shade and yeah there's really no tree cover here and even though it's pretty easy to do and not that long of a trail. It's it's an adventure experience for sure you cross this massive expanse of slick rock at one point in the trail then dips down into these little grotto's filled with shrubs and and then you shimmy along the side of a cliff as well with the trail running along the cliff wall until it ultimately rounds the corner too delicate arch and then you have this show stopping view Nasr such a beautiful and incredible. Say it's like seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time it's such an American treasure. I know yeah. It is like the Statue of Liberty except instead instead of being made by France and gift to the US it was made by Mother Nature over the course of millions and millions of years. And this thing absolutely looks like a work of masterful art it's made of Sandstone. That's been whittled by wind and water and it's got these vivid tens of orange and red. It honestly looks too good to be real and when we made it to the end into the trail we definitely made sure to sit down and enjoy the views for awhile. We even packed lunches and then we aided we just laid down on the sandstone for a bit to drink it all in. Yeah we kind of Ward Off all the large crows. There were like slowly inching closer to US trying to eat our our lunch and like no you need to and this this is. Why don't feed the animals because then they get used to it and they'll just hop around? It's it's a lot and then so we have lunch. We kind of relax a little bit. And then you went scurrying down by the art and I was afraid they would slip in plot but it all worked out fine and I got some really cool like adventurous hands on photos view being daredevil. I'm not a dare do you are just stay. But they're doing things. Yeah it's fun. It is fun and there were other people during you weren't the only ones so it was somewhat reassured. You're listening to park land for my heart radio. We'll be back in just a moment to talk talk more about artists National.
