"Child the china bride and loving lost lord which is the prequel to sometimes aerobic. She expands on her research with a pair of colorado and sisters. Don't ask me about the colorado is colorado and debate. That's another podcast entirely. Mary jo says at the pair were quote so attuned to each other that one could interest all and know that assisted in the earlier the same day they could lend ngo twitter. They both had families of their own but there were a lot happier living in the same city. According to j while as she mentioned male twins often became estranged during the lessons and even remained estranged female. Twins were often very close friends in false colors. Of course hey uses the device of the center. Almost psychic attuned meant as a plot device as kit. Harry's home syncing. Something bad has happened to his brother. Evelyn but what do you think about. Using twins is a plot device is a too cliche. Do you enjoy it. Why not tweet us and let us know. Mary jo what she's working on right now. Well a lot of my backlist books. I have the rights back there available in book all around. The world keeps the price moderate everywhere. I now right for kensington and they have quite a few books of mine by this point. Ten or twelve very good publisher for me and i did a series called the lost lords. Were boys went to a school for boys of good birth and bad behavior. And the the duke's daughter who runs it basically helping these kids who have an odd kickin gallup find a way to exist in society without losing their soul so they have all kinds of stories and that series kind of segue into another one called the rogues redeemed. Where a coupla those guys. Who went to school. But i hadn't paired off yet and three other guys are in a a seller in portugal in the friendship just invaded considers them all english buys and he's going to shoot them all in the morning. They work together to get out in the bond in the process so the first two books were wants to soldier. The second one is once a rebel and wants a rebel is the only book i really set in the united states set during the war of eighteen twelve. It includes the british burning washington and the battle of baltimore. Which was the battle of fort mchenry where they star spangled banner. It was written in all dead and my husband likes to say if we'd lost the battle of baltimore would be speaking english. The really dramatic history is really interesting stuff because both the hero and the heroine english by birth and kind of ambivalent about how they want things to turn out so just completed. The third book in the series called once scoundrel and the hero. That one is a key sea-captain who is sent on a mission to rescue a earls daughter who has been captured in barbary but they can't afford the ransom so they're sending him to try and get it back at a discount. That's genius one thing. I really wish that you had done is to have spin books. Based on her other characters paps more of a feature of modern romances and some may save will mercenary rather than plus reasons. I adore this. If i've enjoyed a book immensely and the right has been good enough to make me feel swallowed up by the world. They've created this happens often with mary. Jo's work if i it's so wonderful to know you have a whole series to look forward to you. Find yourself trying to guess who will be next to have their romance featured on my ongoing list of his characters whom i would have loved to seek it. Their own books jack from kazillion in which she gets up from a feisty heroine you can hear why episode six he deserves it. Also lord lectured. Freddie's father tiffany wheeled the tipster from the non such now older and wiser having had the edges knocked off her ego by a brush with death or misfortune. Casts yes yes. She loses all have fortune and is forced to settle for a poor young lord and he see it's writing itself. Everyone in the first chapter the toll gay then disappears. The list goes on once a rebel. Mj's war of eighteen twelve book and once a scoundrel are available to buy now and there's even a fourth book in the series wants a spy. I highly recommend you. Snaffle them up as a delicious diversion. Mary jo tells me about the first in this series wants a soldier Mind that takes place right. After napoleon abdicated its april of eighteen. Fourteen and the hero is somebody who's been in this series from the beginning. But you don't see mushroom because he was a serving army officer in the peninsula. He's ready to pack things. Up and go back to england but one of the other guys was seller said you go by this little mountainous country between spain and portugal. San gabriel. see how things are going. Because they've been a good ally to britain and they've had a french army overrun Check things out there as observers sunny. Does things happen and the wrist as they say is historical novel. We chat for a bit. About how lovely is that stephen. Fry talk to me about hair episode. One in case you were wondering. And i mentioned that he'd said guests often look at the his his shelf. A scott's romance at a girl thing which means it never gets as much respect. Mystery is pretty respectable people get killed. That's respectable but something that's by and for women largely is never going to get same kind of respect mary jo's in the midst of a reluctant family get together and has to go now. The thought of a big family do makes me terribly. Stahl jack and a little sad which is probably why we get to talking about the rather poignant ending to georgette and ronald's lives we'll be covering it in more detail in our final episode of the season but as we wind the interview down mary jo is philosophical about our favorite both had a good long run they both had successful career. They had their companionship. They had a son they loved and they're worse lives worse ways to go. That's a good way to look at it Thank you so much and have a day with your family. Okay well thank you very much. I'm glad this worked out so well. I'm so glad you don't have a camera in my face take care. Bye-bye this short and uc interview with a total delight. And i'm so happy court. Mary jo enjoying such a lovely time. I wonder which is right now. Hopefully somewhere with someone. She loves sitting beside her and a lodge plus of wine next week. We'll be reading the unknown ajax with travel rights. Extraordinary rob crossan a very old friend of mine old in that we've known each other longtime not that we're old. We're not okay anyway. Rob is one of the very few people who knew me before my husband. Mike and i got together when i was nineteen. We lived in the shed house. When i was at uni though often felt it was strange. "Previously on head today all the time the little women goes on churning out her latest novel. This one is going to touch an all time low. No really will. It stinks the way that meant selfishness is portrayed in this book. I found very inspiring. And she's very well aware of it. She doesn't complain. She doesn't hate for that she's just aware of it and she find a way of dealing with it. Yeah we didn't know whether it's your jet was trying to be like that's what the human condition can do. You can have this long long long of like build up and then some things happening boo riach. Go the book is like construction and she made this amazing architecture and then with the finishing and closing all these chambas that created. She didn't close them as skillfully as she opened them. This is here today. A podcast exploring the life and work of regency romance non parole georgia hair. Many of you will be familiar with this week's guest and i can't wait to doctor. Mary jo putney hills from baltimore maryland in the us. And i've been dying to chat to her as she's a bestselling author regency romances. How fascinating it's going to be to picker brains about the art of building a believable regency world. What are the pitfalls unlike shusha to him. She loves her. Work explores alcoholism death and domestic abuses themes a regular on the bestsellers including the new york. Times wall street journal. Usa today and publishers weekly. She's well versed in the art of writing to did line. Just like george it. She's also been showered in awards like the romance writers of america meters to romantic times career. Achievement awards for nj i w golden leaf awards plus the jr w career achievement award for historical romance and in two thousand thirteen. She was awarded the romance writers of america. Nora roberts lifetime achievement award her pencil peace must be growing. I'm sure she keeps one or two of them in her toilet. I would if i had so many. But what is the life of a modern bestseller alike today compared to jets time. Let's find out in this week's episode of hair today. In case you were wondering if mary jo like emma darwin august and episode three has some illustrious answers to draw inspiration from the answer. Is my relatives. Were all new. Farmers came over in the seventeenth century. I'm descended from plebs. Probably a long line of serving wenches or something else sort of menial remember group called the word wenches. So there you go. We'll be winches together. Well there's a lot more peasants and plebs than there are aristocrats. true probably a good thing. Well somebody has to run the society and produce the food and do his rubbing up exactly. But apart. From hailing from good new english stock. Who is she but my name. Is mary jo. Putney i'm an american regency writer and historical writer in fantasy writer in a number of other things. I've been blessed for over thirty years. And i'm pretty impressed. I'm still standing after all these years. But i always loved english history and books written by english. People i lived in oxford for two years was the art editor of a leftwing magazine. All of which was great background. Once i got a computer and realized that i could tell stories and make corrections in the and they stayed fixed and after that it's all kind of fell into place. I've been writing all of these years. And when did you. I read a hanover. I was in college. And your basic poverty stricken student and had gone downtown in syracuse. I went to syracuse university. And they had an economy bookstore with really really cheap books in the basement. There whole long tables of cheap books with cover stripped off. I did not know that that was illegal at somebody was taking them in trying to sell them. But a bunch by this hair person. And i picked one up at picked another one up. I kind of poked at them rather wehrley. Because you know in five cents on my budget was not insignificant. Picking up sylvester the wicked uncle kind of a gothic satire. But there's a few. I don't like quite as much but in general i just liked the waste. Used language and the insights in the derive british humor. It was just so much fun to read and as a student. I needed my escapes than cheap books. I have bought all of her books at one time or another. At least three times. Like when i moved from syracuse to california to get rid of that i lot of books. I've i've gotten other copies. I've got them on e books all kinds of things. I completely relate to that as i don't feel comfortable at home unless there's a few hairs knocking about. What do you tell people to convince him to read. If you like witty character studies that are quite insightful but also really entertaining. Give georgette here try. Wow sinked now. I feel creating an entire podcast about hand. Life may have been overkill. Maybe i should rethink my choices. But then i wouldn't have got to talk to so many awesome people including mary jo then i asked the same question. I asked 'em with a regency work. Was it difficult not to slip into his. Very specific brand. Regency can't sorta chose not to use a lot of the cat. But certainly i had read so much of her that her voice informs my writing. My very first book was the diabolical bear and is a very harris setup and it wasn't delivered on my part but in my mind she was template for of regency was and i was just sort of playing it. I had gotten this computer in my future. Husband had showed me how to use the word processing programs we. Let's see if we can write a book. And i wrote it ten. I sold it and never looked back. She makes it sound so easy. Would that it will so simple. Little current brothers reference. We put apart from her clear natural talent. What other resources did she drawn. I read a lot of history books. One thing that showed up in my books quite early with adventure and use of history so all. Her voice informed my sensibility. I tried to avoid copying her. Obviously but she was there in my head but I i didn't do all the research on the first person letters and so forth. And i've read a biography over. That said she would plan kind of little traps for people who are trying to copy her. I didn't really want to use a lot of the can't because i think that a story should have a sense of the time period set in but the same time it needs to be accessible to people and my audience is primarily american. Because i'm american. So i try to find the voice that captures the period while the same time doesn't leave them scratching their heads wondering what on earth i'm talking about specifically for a commercial fiction. I need to be conscious who might be reading exactly. And also you want to create your own world for people to slip into. That happened fairly quickly as i said. i like. Adventure allowed my characters are always doing improbable. Things in managing to survive in bonding through the experience. I'm not sure why. But a part of me hopes. Mary jo will have some great insight into the reasons why his work has yet to be made into a film. One of the things. I've been thinking about lately is whether or not it has anything to do with a lack of interest amongst americans..

"That during those years you know there are some days. When i did not know how i could make it. There was just not enough of me to go around I i struggled with all of those things that we mentioned earlier. Discouragement loneliness frustration. And yet what. I learned three. That is at. The struggle is hardest when i focus on my own situation instead of turning to the love and providence of god so when we turn our eyes to god we can remember to be strong in the lord and the power of his might like officiant. Six ten tells us and so my biggest word of encouragement to single parents who were trying to home school is to rest in god's faithfulness because the truth is that none of us. Whether we're single married can bring up. Our children will simply by relying on our own power. Tonight i love for a second corinthians twelve nine and this is a great remember for a reminder for all homeschooling parents and he set in to me. My grace is sufficient for the from. My strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will i rather glory in my infirmities at the power of christ may rest upon me and that such an important reminder for all home schooling parents that's right to get specifically to homeschooling as a single parent of remember that your solo but you do not have to go along. I really encourage you not to try to be alone ranger. You need to look for some kind of support network. The church is the first place that any single parents should be able to turn a. Hopefully you have an encouraging. Family extended family siblings and parents. That's not always the case. But if you do that's a wonderful part of your support a good homeschool support group maybe a colo godly friends. You may be able to swap. Child care with Other single parents or even just other homeschooling moms You can have an accountability partner particularly if you're working from home or even a mastermind team if you have a home business we're going to be talking about that in a later episode in encourage you. Don't be afraid to ask for help. there are often. There are people who would be happy to help that. Maybe they don't want to risk offending you by offering or they don't know what you need now. Unfortunately the truth is that sometimes people don't want to and if you encounter one of those grinches just move on and realized that that attitude does not represent god's people so what people knew what you need and as we were talking about the idea that you're still a real family you do have to import Establish a new family identity. You have to find a new normal. And when i'm talking to someone who's newly single or just in the process of going through a divorce one of the things i always say is it takes about a year to find some sort of a new normal and feel like you're getting your footing so don't don't despair if you're three months in and you feel like life's never going to be normal again. It's never going to be the same again but you will establish a new normal. That works for your family as it is now You can establish new traditions. Holidays can be tough particularly if there's visitation involved so instead of focusing on of this we always used to do it. We can't do it anymore. focus on building new traditions. Make time for family fine And all of this. I haven't even talked specifically about homeschooling yet because we're going to have a whole section on specific homeschooling tips but all of this is how the single parent has to adjust to all of live specifically including home schooling and again. I want to remind you. That god's grace is sufficient. He is a father of the fatherless defender widows and your family and your life can be a testimony of god's faithfulness. Hey man amen. We are at a time for this episode. But we're going to be back on wednesday and we are going to continue talking about this and bring encouragement to the single parents and to those of you who are not single but have friends who are single. Because they know all of us do and this is such a great Just reminder of how we can be an encouragement. So mary jo. Where can people find out more about you and what you do. If you're interested in school encouragement you can go to flourish at home dot com. That is the best place to get my book. it's out of print but it still available in digital format and i still have a few cases on hand so flourish at home dot com. We'll take you to a ways. You can find the book and also to my blog. Which i'm not very active on. But there's some good things in the archives and i also have a facebook page for flourish home. Now if you don't know whether that's a big deal, I want you to Google two phrases Juneteenth and Black Wall Street, you'll find out why people are really upset about this and why it's off the face to the black community. Somebody on another Tick Tock post commented that he was offering two free tickets on his campaign website to go to this rally. So I went investigated it, it's two free tickets per cell phone number because when you register, you have to give them your cell phone number, they send you a code, you put the code in and your tickets are reserved for you sell. This probably means having worked on a political campaign, this past fall, it probably means that I'll start getting text messages from his campaign. Waged, I have to do to get rid of. Those is check stock, that's all you have to do. Once you touch stopped, they have to stop texting you. That's the law they have to leave you alone. So I recommend all of those of us that want to see does nineteen thousand seat Auditorium, barely feel completely empty, don't Reserve tickets now. And leave him standing there alone on the stage. "Thank you. Mary jo for joining us in the podcast today. Thanks for having me so mary jo. You know many of us are familiar with microsoft of course and the products and would have heard of microsoft three sixty five defender but perhaps not too familiar with microsoft digital crimes unit. So if you could share with us what your team does your areas of focus and then perhaps a bit of the history of the team. I understand it was created back in two thousand and eight so external internal drivers behind creating the team and also perhaps a bit about your role. Sure so as you said i lied. Microsoft's digital crimes unit for asia which includes channel and australia and new zealand. Who may be surprised to know there in asia and and then all the way over to india so it's a relatively large geography and i have a team of people here but we also have a worldwide team and that's really how we can be successful is relying on our colleagues around the world to work with us on things so the digital crimes unit itself is made up of technical legal and business experts. And you're right. It was formed in two thousand and eight and basically this is part of our legal department but the approach that we take to addressing cyber threats that impact our customers is that we work with a lot of teams outside of the legal department including the windows defender team and our threat intelligence teams and many different teams in order to assess what's harming our customers and to formulate a plan that involves both technical side of things that is handled by windows defender and and other parts of microsoft as well as the legal side of things. And that's where we come in and so basically what we do is we have a lot of relationships with local law enforcement as well as the computer. Emergency response teams in various countries. And we really rely on those partnerships and working closely with them across asia for my team in order to successfully address something like the trick dot dot net.

"Air. We're speaking with journalist and historian Neil Gabler about his new book. It's the first of a two volume biography of the late Senator Edward Kennedy and the course of liberalism in American politics. It's titled Catching The Wind, Edward Kennedy and the Liberal Our 1932 to 1975. Ted Kennedy lost. Another brother, Robert Kennedy, was assassinated after winning the California primary in 1968 is part of his presidential campaign. S O. That was another deep tragedy for the Kennedy family. But the following year in 1969 was an incident which would probably do more to undercut Ted Kennedy's moral authority and reputation than anything else. In his life. This was the Chappaquiddick incident. I mean, you know, Ah, Lot of people remember this, but may not remember the details. Some some younger listeners may not recall it know of it at all. Just just give us the bare outlines What happened in this this episode. Well, this was the summer after Bobby Kennedy's assassination. And and Ted was in a in a dire state. I describe the state that Bobby Kennedy was in after John Kennedy's assassination. At this point, Ted Kennedy was in a similar state. Um, he was asked to come to Chappaquiddick off of Martha's Vineyard to participate in a meeting of Bobby Kennedy's Ah group of Bobby Kennedy's former staffers. They were known as the boiler room girls because they manage the room in which state delegations were monitored. He went there for a kind of weak For Bobby. You also went there to participate in a regarding a race. He was a great sailor. And what happened that evening? The evening of the party on Chappaquiddick Island is one of the boiler room girls named Mary Jo Kopechne E and Ted Kennedy went off in a car. Ted had said that they were going to go back to the mainland back to Martha's Vineyard to Edgar Town, but on the way back, Ted took a wrong turn. One off a very narrow bridge over a pond called Fuck a pond, and the car sailed off the bridge. Overturned into the water was about 7 Ft. Of water. Ted managed To free himself from the car throw window, then said that he don't back toward the car to try and remove Mary Jo Kopechne E. But he tried repeatedly and the current was very, very strong and he could not. Pull her out of the car Eventually, Mary Jo Kopechne e. Died. She drowned in the car is a womanizer and in even is a drinker. So there were those elements. Was he drunk? Were he and Mary Joe Kopechne e going off to have some sort of tricks? Which seems? Highly unlikely whatever one thinks of Ted Kennedy, highly unlikely that Mary Jo Kopechne e would have done that she was a strict Catholic and it impudence, her reputation but also a to B. Fair to Ted Kennedy in this in this instance, it would be very unlikely that Ted Kennedy would have gone off with one of Bobby's a boiler room. Girls. It's just not something you would have done now. Ted did not report the accident. For another 10 hours. There were reasons that he gave for that. But he himself said that none of them were exculpatory that he couldn't exculpate himself from this. And that really was the incident of Chappaquiddick that had all sorts of ramifications politically for him personally, and for the political, cultural generally, right, right. I mean, after the accident was middle of the night and he actually plunged into the water and swam across this little area to the Edwards and went to his hotel. Rather than reporting. It went to sleep, got up in the morning and spend a couple of hours and by the time he reported the accident, you know the car had already been spotted, and I believe they had also already identified. It is his and rescued. Had retrieved Mary Jo Kopechne ease body. He would eventually plead guilty to leaving the scene of an accident and getting get a suspended sentence. And you know it left the feeling that You know, he got he got a treatment that no one else would have in that circumstance. What? What was the what was the impact on him Just his image. His career. The impact Woz that given Ted Kennedy's reputation, he had a reputation to his brother. But, you know, Ted's reputation was certainly impudent didn't need much more imputing, and it was Almost certainly the the death of any chance that Edward Kennedy would have of being president of states. Prior to that accident, it was assumed that Ted Kennedy would be running against Richard Nixon in 1972 if he chose to run and they would have a very good chance. Of being elected president, and if not, then, then in 1976, but that doomed his chances. It also did something else. There's a line that Walter Mondale's then senator from Minnesota, said. I think it's It's absolutely true, he said. When Ted went over that bridge He took liberalism with him, because if we talk about again the relationship between liberalism and moral authority, and if you look at Ted Kennedy as being the primary proponent Liberalism. Then, when Ted Kennedy went over that bridge, he took liberalism with him because he took the moral authority over that bridge with him. Reintroduce you again. We're gonna take another break Here We're speaking with Neal Gabler. His new book is the first volume of the two part biography titled Catching The Wind, Edward Kennedy and the liberal Our 1932 to 1975. We'll talk more after a break. This is.

Caring for COVID-19 positive patients in New York

"Kobe nineteen pandemic has brought with it many trials and tribulations. We're facing them other healthcare systems are too especially those in hub. In this episode, you'll hear from, Dr, Jeffrey Johnson who's one of our critical care physicians in south, West Wisconsin in Rochester and we'll learn about his experience and learning from carrying for Kobe patients in New York City. Welcome to reimagining community care podcast, and thanks for listening in I'm bobby gas style with co hosts, Mary Jo Williamson and ashes the mood. We continue recording the podcast via zoom trying our best to share this conversation as if we were relieved together in our favorite coffeeshop. We can only wish we were together in our favorite coffee shop right now but very excited about the discussion today. Well, the pandemic has no doubt challenged us in many ways and tested our patients and endurance. There is a silver lining. It has created new opportunities for us to serve in unexpected ways and to learn an innovate. It really takes me back to our story Mayo Clinic came to life from a crisis in Rochester and has become a global leader in healthcare from decades of continuous learning and innovation. So today, we'd like to welcome Dr Jeffrey, Johnson an anesthesiologist in critical care in both Lacrosse in. Rochester. Dr Johnson had a really unique opportunity to care for covert patients in New York in the height really of the pandemic. Actor Johnson thank you so much for joining us. Today. We're excited to hear how the Cova crisis became an opportunity for you to help others and also to bring back learnings to Mayo Clinic. Well. Thank you for having me. I appreciate the opportunity to discuss my time in New, York the care of these patients during the pandemic. Definitely was a experience of a lifetime really changed my approach to looking at life in general, truly an eye opening opportunity and I'm looking forward to sharing what I learned during my time there. Texture Johnson, how did that opportunity come about and why did you decide to go? So. You know I have a clinical obligation as well as administrative one and like many of us on this in this call, we're very busy during the early phase of the spring planning for the pandemic in South West Scott's and And so during that time, I've been getting emails from colleagues around the world Italy France discussing what they're experiencing as ice you doctors. They were pretty impressive and so I was seeing those society of crew care medicine early on during the pandemic actually was sending out emails intensiveness asking to come to New York if they're able to go. But clearly during all our planning things, I couldn't make that trip but still wait on the fortunately though you know as it worked out, we hit a lull. We were prepared as much as we could be. So responded to that inquiry after getting support from my local leaders and across. Rochester. And how long from when you decided until you left for New York Think. It was about two weeks when I was another colleague of mine who actually was doing the same thing I didn't know it at the time, but he was already working through the process to get support from high leadership in the organization and so by the time we got approval and by the time I was in Europe is just about two weeks. That, you're Jensen I can't even imagine what it was like to walk into that environment on your first day in New York. Share with us. Some of your very first observations were about the situation. Even, my observations before New, York made an impression on me. You know part of the process this aside of critical care medicine worked it out that they united. Airlines was flying volunteers offer free and so. connected to Rochester Ando hair and all of us for most of them have been hair during normal busy normal times and what struck me as I got off the plane waiting for my connection to New York was the quiet. The hallways were empty. The only people you saw were usually employees related to the airport you look out on the tarmac. Planes lined up in formation that clearly indicated they were. Shut down and not going to be used for any period of time. And then when I flew into New York it was much the same having been in New York, a few other times before really impressed me with again the quiet the lack of people there was no congregating in the park areas really what made in pressure with me my distance from the airport I landed at into the hotel I was staying was about twenty miles and it actually took us about twenty minutes. I can't think of the last time as a New York where that timeline fit distance. So it was pretty surreal to fly into a city that's known for being busy twenty four hours and seeing how quiet it was. and so New York itself as a group or as the city was quiet but and then I made it to the hospital the next day and had different observation deck to new the word quiet, which to me is sort of a calming word. But I suspect that the impression we should associate with that word is more eerie. A good description it really was. It was eerie hang. BEEN IN NEW YORK. was completely different than what I remember. There was an anxiety in the city sense it the Uber driver I interact with you know he was very tense They actually created a plastic barrier between the front seat in the backseat of his private vehicle using duct tape and Saran wrap. And then obviously everybody was wearing Maso. Yeah. The quiet really wasn't required.

The Xbox Series S could have had a very different look

"Been able to get an xbox yet. No thank you bringing it up again. Really want. Either neither of you guys get one I should just try. To get it of course, she would. Then you could auction it off between. Two Thousand Dollars Mary Jo. Wanted to take pictures of it like it is plant in. Exeter, the S. E. Has. Sleep on it. That is something by the way, the a lot of people buying the S. For, some reason because it's Everyone wants the X. Right. All the cool kids get the s like because the s the cheap. One. I think some people are buying experts. One S is. By the way that definitely happened. Because really. The problem with this branding these these names and bass confusing when you see the Can Get. Lucky. On a different level though. So remember with xbox one, there were there was the original xbox one that was the s and the ex they were all xbox one consoles. So, what do you call consoles? There's a series s in a series act. So what's the name of the console? Generation? Right xbox series series. It's a terrible name. It's not a name I'm convinced that there are a lot of DADS out there. Who went out and bought it. Soon. Harmony and they saw the one s great. This is what junior wanted to go the accident. Got It at a crazy low price. They think they're geniuses way. Save GonNa. Tell, Christmas Day. I was going to be a problem. Yeah Anyway Is it expected Sony said they would this would happen that there will be another trunch of. Xbox and so you just keep your eye on these sites and I emailed Microsoft Unai told me that there would be more before the line good publicly. However, it's been interesting because I've seen other places quote him as saying we will have more at lunch. but they told me Berlin. So yeah, I actually, I put a dedicated Ethernet port in the wall for it. Yeah I'm serious. Screen again I painted. I have a home for you just come on. So he said, this is the xbox series confused. That means that would help. That's a weird problem but the branding I know why I mean s Synnex kind of map to the previous down like I get that part of it but but what generate they didn't they left out what generation this is. Very. Strange. Yeah. That's confusing I. Think it's

The delay will also see Microsoft not enabling third party dual screen windows ten x devices in this year as well and sources say that the android based surface duo has not been delayed. Microsoft's most daring Surface ever might be unveiled this week

"We do have a lot to talk about obviously to more. You're here here for the surface of the Microsoft hardware of and not this not a surface event. It's a Microsoft hardware wording here obviously a lot of surface news coming along so I want to kind kind of stick to that and actually at the show I'll give a little review of my iphone eleven pro Max that I've here for about a week and a half now so it's a lot of pros and cons say that there's a lot of nothing but good news from US Review Sandra curious. I'm there's some there's a handful of things not all the sickness. That's making your negative. The sickness made me extremely you like it didn't prevent me from getting a flu supposedly Rowsley Apple Devices prevent illness and injury. You know what that's what I thought but only if I had the air pods any Apple Watch I would have been prevented all illnesses so tim. I'm Cook told me so Paul. What do you want to begin with. This event actually let me let me begin at the end because this is leaking all of the twitter's right now so so as I had speculated for actually many weeks in a row and windows weekly Microsoft is GonNa because I base this on the timing of the event. You may recall that in the spring. They suddenly started testing windows ten version twenty one. The Virgin is not coming until next year. That was very confusing. They've never done anything like that before. It's a Lotta time right yeah and and given that and the fact that such and Adela was coming to this event. I I've been speculating that maybe this'll be the time that they unveil what's going on. Software wise in that release because it must be the basis of this light. Os or whatever we're calling this thing that we've been talking about for a long time and now what has leaked is that Microsoft will announce a new version of windows ten wins ten acts that will ship late next year on new dual screen in folding screen devices does ten x ten ten. Well Yeah right right so this is the first this. Is this the first name. I guess official name change absorb trailer for Windows ten. No no no no so. This is just a new version so we have windows ten home. We have pro enterprise. We have been pro. workstations nations got it so ten. X is another skew. It's and it will only be provided on those devices. It's not something well. I should say I I actually don't know a lot about it right now so I should say I don't you know there's no way that someone with windows ten. homer pro is ever going to be able to update to this or upgrade or whatever it's not a you know. It's like a side hi thanks so it's just another skew in its very specifically for those kinds of devices and so we'll see what else you know. They'll talk about it. they'll show show off a prototype apparently some people upset of what Mary Jo Foley Centaurus and you know look we know Dell and Lynn Ovo have both talked about. I don't know if was falling deal screen devices or one of the one of both whatever those are the number one in three three P. C. makers in the world. Presumably everyone in the top five will announce such a device may be. We'll see one of those Lenovo last year was very or the subsisiary. Actually was very cagey when they said you know it's. GonNa be running windows but they didn't say which version obviously it's going to be this version so yeah that's exciting. I suspect I'm just again. I'm just guessing based on timing that twenty one that version of windows ten we've been testing forever must have the plumbing wing necessary to support those devices and that will actually see the the real world support for it in two thousand eight to which would be a minor upgrade that will ship at this time next year so so that's that's the big news it's kind of like their one more thing you know type announcement right because obviously the focus tomorrow is going to be on the stuff like here's the new stuff that we're. GonNa ship very soon for this holiday season the windows ten x stuff for next year time period but I think they're just prepping the user base really just for the future right so this this is coming windows those who support folding until screen devices. I find it very interesting considering d think they'll show some some sort of you know demo on a rendered device. I have no idea yeah I'm curious about that. I I yeah I'm curious. See I'm curious to see if usually at these events. You don't see you know deller. Lenovo already other company right so I don't know if they're going to either not. I don't know if we're actually going to see their devices in person or anything like that. I don't that I have no idea that demo is for those folding devices. I I know that I know that it's hot now because it's new but coote. Who is it marketed to WHO I remember. It's almost like when the note I came out right the Samsung note and everybody said the way too big for the regular consumer. WHO's this poor. Who needs the phone to be that big and in reality slowly? Every single phone became that Obagi now there's nothing unique about it in that sense but you know right now who sat foldable device for actually the that thing thing that you just mentioned is probably a good comparison because it well okay. I guess it doesn't actually replace another device. I suppose in some ways the died so for a lot of people a FAB type form factor means. They don't have to have a tablet and a phone right so they have this thing. That's kind of inbetween in a does both things well. You can watch movies and read. It's like a big enough screen. I think that this new device type folding a dual screen devices kind of fall into the same type of category where in in this case what you might be preventing yourself or not having to carry any Moore's laptop right that this thing will will be a phone or a small tablet form factor to begin with and it's easy to carry but when you need the bigger screen you can kind of open up. It's it's sort of the same value proposition gas as you know a folding smartphone right. It's when you need it. You know you get the bigger screen and so I'm I'm curious to see how Microsoft presented that I mean the surface team has proven itself to be very averse to leading edge technology right. They still don't support thunderbolt three for some reason so what what would make them jump on the bandwagon with this kind of thing they must have some pragmatic rationale for it. They don't tend to just do things to kind of nuts not so part of it is probably pressure from PC makers you know in the same way that Samsung and Weiwei and whatever must have gone to go and say hey guys. This is the new trend you've got support this android they did even though they don't today provide their own folding vice of any kind and they don't seem to be making one. Microsoft in this case is making one so very interesting because we'll say very. It's very interesting considering. This is something that we've been I berth for all that changes a lot doesn't and this was probably one of the first major topics we discuss when you and I started started doing podcasts courier was a foldable windows based device or Microsoft device that a lot of people were excited for in two thousand nine or two thousand and two thousand ten right when I think he mark thousand career exact timing yeah I mean we go back to it because it kind reminds me of this because we we had the scene discussion where who is marketed to US vice four and can't catch catch on. I'm not convinced that why and Samsung are going to have a la- major success with their foldable devices with their foldable yeah. Maybe it's something that happens over time I the the note was immediately successful in it triggered a a real change in the industry. Even apple eventually jumped on board. Obviously the the folding thing it's GonNa take a while but part of the reason is just the reliability issues right. You're seeing problems with their redesigned designed. Samsung Galaxy fold and so it's GonNa take a little a little take a little while. I do think that because. PC's are bigger and bulkier devices compared to phones that the reliability issues have a chance of not being a serious and there are some productivity arguments. You could make around in having a bigger screen at your disposal so we'll see. I mean some of it's going to be hokey. It may not you know the whole thing may not fly. I don't personally other than the whole yeah. It's cool the thing I mean I. I don't personally see a use case for it. So a lot of people said that about like we said the note. I remember remember when I when I think jokes holding like an ipad up to like I had one sent me by. At and T. to review and I loved it. I praise the device I I thought the more battery life and that thing remember Android at that point wasn't as refined as as it is now at all bit rot was way worse than it was today. These things were were the soft software wasn't as sophisticated as it was on the iphone at that time so I love the phone and I gave it a praising a great review view where the battery life was a necessity and other other manufacturers should catch onto this large display and

How to Become Successful in Sales

"Today. I've got another clip from my ninety minute long conversation with Dana Leeman from Wiley in episode thirty seven of the sales success stories podcast here. She is again talking about how to become successful in sales. I would I tell them to be patient to be extremely hungry. And really a big win that I think a lot of people forget about Scott is to be humble, and to really look at other people not just where they work, but other people that they know whether it's an assails job or something else about how they gained their success and to talk to those people and walk right up to them. That was one of the things I did early on when I started Wiley is I found out who were the leaders and the drivers of sales success in our company and I walked right up to them. And I just said and one of them is Mary Jo maxi. She's absolutely amazing. She's been with Wiley a long time. I said I wanna be around you. I wanna know what you do. And I wanna know how you do it. And she was kind enough for many occasions that we've had great conversations and were personal friends to this day but to seat those people out, even if it's uncomfortable for you,

Well, in, you know, the family of the Reverend Martin Luther King never believed that James Earl Ray was the assassin. I don't know if you looked at that, Paul. I mean, there is so much to keep me busy with with Lincoln JFK. But I will circle back that at some point because that would be a great show. There are a number of things about about Dr king's assassination that just don't make sense. So and it's always nice to have a fresh set of is living. It's up, you know, when you talk about Hoover and his involvement in things, I wouldn't put it past them to be involved in that one, you know, either in in terms of direct operation or in terms of cover up. So. Yeah. There's a lot of ground there. And I'll be visiting that at some point. You know, I look at some of the news clips of things happened in the sixties tumultuous time for us. You know, it's funny because you know, we're kind of living through tumultuous times right now. And people always say, I've never seen the country this polarized. I've never seen. It was worse than having. You know, an and you look back at the nineteen sixties and say my God, I I see polarization in just about every you know, and just about every walk of life. You look at some of the period newspapers, you know, during the civil war, and you know, we're a country that that is that is knowing Tom alternative known a lot of people have deeply held beliefs. However, however outmoded are wrong, they might be. And I think that's one of the of the beautiful things about our country though, too. Because we have these these these dot periods, and we use them as a learning experience, and quite frankly, not the sound overly patriotic. But that's what separates us from other countries. We do make some horrible mistakes. And we try to correct those mistakes and not make the same mistakes. Again. I remember. You know, back, you know, posted timber eleven thousand one whether a lot of people that were clamoring to have Muslim Americans rounded up, and and and I waited and, you know, a lot of people to their credit said, you know, what we tried that in you know, with Japanese Americans during the civil war. "But Mary Jo White is not Mary Jane. Why? Jay. Actually, married Jack will in quite so Mary J is perfect. Right. Wife jacqueline. Anyway, you got a new book called a practical guide to cooking with cannabis. Yeah. The actual title is every day Mary J because that's how often I think you ought to use the medicine, but it's a practical guide because I've been teaching cooking with cannabis for about eight years. And so this isn't one of those Sheffi books. It's more about practical ways to use. And I'm calling it medicine because that's what it is. Our people silently getting whoop. Sorry, Terry talking people finally getting over the drama that they think that you're gonna get high if you use marijuana products. Yeah. Yeah. Because we know so much more now about cannabis all the propaganda is kind of going away. We should start by saying THC CBD so understand. We're getting there, buddy. You're getting there. Because we're talking about three different kinds three main types of cannabis. But so you're CBD which people are hugely into right now is primarily one of the big cabinets that you find in the plant so him route or Alice is almost pure CBD. There's no THC. So that is a wonderful thing to use for anxiety and stress and seizures and all that kind of stuff right with the THC that people are so concerned about is really important because with cannabis you have over one hundred can avenue, it's and they all do something different to the body, and we're talking about an entourage effect. So I think what I'm trying to tell you guys. It's don't be scared of THC because there's all these things in cannabis that worked together. Right. I think where people get really concerned, and maybe your book clarifies us a little bit is maybe at some point or another someone went to. A party and someone made brownies and there was an untold amount. Yes. HCC marijuana in that rowdy? And they kind of had a bad experience. I think that's where some of the concern comes from the paranoia that can be associated with these with these. All right unexpected. Yeah. Brownies getting over it. That's all. Well. Yeah. Yeah. And people are starting to understand that you're not going to go crazy and jump off a building. It can not physically hurt. You unlike an opioid, right right because it doesn't affect the brain stem. Yeah. So I'm more concerned. There's a lot of recipes in the book, obviously. But I'm mostly wanted. Teach. You guys. Why why would you wanna use cannabis? Right. So I think that's the most on putting the whole story has been plenty and plenty of research about showing actually the benefits of. So dinner. Okay. Let's have dinner well cannabis or cannabis. Let's talk about the recipes in your book to make a dinner. Okay. What I recommend when using cannabis is I don't normally have a dinner party with cannabis and everything, but you can't well you can't people are going to mean your damn self on Tuesday. That's not so good. The guests that never left. But I like to do more like appetizers that are Medicated if people are down with them, right? So there are recipes like my June, which is a Moroccan compound. There's there's these cheddar stuffed olives malls. Yeah. Dip their stuff like that. And what I like to do is have a little at the beginning. And then everybody's sort of happy by the entree. And then they get the hell out by dessert. You know, they're starving by the entree. So let's talk about the chatter, stuffed olive recipe. Well, it's kind of it's that kind of that cocktail vibe from the fifties. So you basically take a green olive and he covered like an cheese pastry. But in the street is can. Yeah. I think the big question, and I think a lot of people have this question to you. If you've ever cooked with cannabis at home. Some people are familiar with extracting the medicinal properties through kind of low heat in mutter more often than yes. Is that really the way to do it? Is there a better way to do it? Are there different ways to do it? That is a very good question. And I would say there's different ways to do it. What you're looking at is a medicinal plant with all this good stuff on it. Right. And how do you get that stuff out of there? So you can use heat and fat or you can use cold and alcohol, which is how you make tinctures can also use sugar and salt. I mean, there's like ruby makes. And then fuse sugar salt easy. Yeah. It's very simple and very easy to use. I mean you doing. Just drop this in your coffee and drink your coffee and be done with that. And what you do. The teacher that I'm talking about the alcohol tincture, you put it on sugar and then dehydrated back to sugar real slowly. And then you have beautiful sugar this film cannabis or you can just buy the package already made. So you don't spend three hours doing that. But that's the other thing though, Terry about making it yourself is that once you get cannabis on board. Right. You can make a ton of stuff you can drive paste fruit. You can do different things you need to come over to my house. We'll play around. The cooking part of it. Well, that's the thing. You know, people tend to think, oh, we're just going to be all high and wear dreadlocks and tied. I know you can micro dose, and that's what most people do because you've got a function. You don't you don't wanna be drooling and eating Cheetos me when you week on the people a lot of people don't take a lot, and they don't need a lot. So. The need to control when you do your cooking is very important this. So how do you control that? So if you go to one of the larger stores most edible products are probably going to be in a five milligram or ten milligram dose. Yeah. If you're new to ingesting cannabinoid products edibles, you might be concerned that five might be too much or ten might be too much. And so how do you determine the dosing when you're cooking at home? There are many many variables and the nice thing about starting at a dispensary as you can know five milligrams gives me a little bit of a hangover. Know cannabis is all about tolerance. And of course, the more you use the more you use because you just get better and better. But okay, if you're making it at home, first of all, you need to know how much THC basically is in the cannabis that you have if you get it at a dispensary half a gram for half an ounce. Fourteen grams it'll say X amount of percent, and and then it gets real Matthey and complicated. But it's not insurmountable. Like if your cannabis has one hundred milligrams, for example, and you're making twenty four mini cupcakes. Do the division. Yeah. You know? But the issue is when you grow your own you have to kind of experiment. Yeah. Which can be fun. I was gonna say could be a good tight can also be night. That just reminded. We're talking to Mary j white her book is called everyday Mary J a practical guide to cooking with cannabis. I wanna cook more cook. I know you're getting all technical. Well, blah, blah, some recipes the wonderful thing about about cooking with cannabis is once you figure out what works for you. You can put it in almost anything. So in the book, there's just to stop for one second not all of it has to be. Seeing. Cannabis like if you extract from him, you just going to get beautiful CBD products, and then you can use that in whatever you're making. And why would you want to that is also helpful? Oh, CBD is wonderful. And if you don't want a high of any kind or if you get tested at work CBD can really help them especially with like, I say anti-spasmodics anti-inflammatory PTSD, you know. So what I like to do like for entrees? Usually you have to ask your cannabis at the end because it's not tolerant to heat. But there's a chicken curry recipe in there that is really good Meatloaf, chili soup. All that kind of stuff. You can add it at the end almost like a like a Garni like like a little bit of pesto. Right. Okay. Right on there. Right. And Embiid goods, of course, it's inside. So they're baked isn't that subject to heat issues too. Well, once you car box late the cannabis which you need to do before you work with it. And you just heat it to burn off the acid molecules. But once you do that it's stable so you can you can use it. Now, I wouldn't stuff it under a chicken skin that would maybe be a waste, but I put it on there before I serve. So I just have zero experience in this area. So obviously sounds like you and here and Mary gonna party down. Yeah. We.

"Cortana and search. It's sitting up not working out. Yeah, they face, and they went to the developers and they've come up with you know, what they think might be a good compromise. It's it's uh. I saw Mary Jo Foley tweet about this. So I went to the, Microsoft blogs. And first of all if you're viewing this you see one of the most impressive graphics I've ever seen. This is the actual graphic that Microsoft published to show you the separation of searching Cortana with what else like Microsoft paints and yellow text in EROs that were drawn by hand. So. Insider preview build one eight three one seven. Is is the one, and I find this very interesting for mostly because I am something of like, a I let's just say, I'm not a big fan of Cortana, and the fact that you can't actually fully disable or Tana. And there are many people go through what's that? You can't rip it out of those stand with extreme prejudice or just merely know go. Yeah. I mean that my real complaint of windows, ten is a fine operating system in many ways. And it's one of those things where we're kind of being forced into it. As new hardware comes out like I can't take advantage of modern graphics and direct x twelve without being on windows. Ten and that's where enthusiasts will go and mainstream users to is computers are sold exclusively with windows. Ten now for the most part, but Cortana is not everyone's favorite and being tied into Microsoft services is not everyone's first choice, although they. I'd love it. If it was so separating it from the window. Search experience is a good first step now, I would love it. If disabling it will actually work, can I don't have it running as a background process all the time. But we will see I'm not on this build. I haven't done any testing yet. But the first thing I thought of was maybe going through the steps that you have to go through to completely rip Cortana out of the system won't take windows search along with it now, but we'll see. Is there are there are some not so easy processes in some fairly painless processes to disable the things you don't like about when those ten and that was one of those things where while if you take Cortana way, then you don't have window searching more so than you have to install third party search tool and and everything else. So. At least separation. I guess that's a start. I get frustrated every time I insult windows update at it..

"Businesses only Mary Jo Foley says based on Chris caps. Recent answers us on this show doubtful. And we'll see did they extend the I think they did once into any eighteen extend this. You missed one VR for Xbox One is the only one you missed. And I would say on an extra you know, they were working on this. I mean, oh, yeah. I think that the the market acceptance of windows mixed reality was such that they said, you know, we don't really. Yeah. This is this going to be another. We're working on like everybody else. And I bet you a lot of companies said. Name. So very good. So that's just to give you an idea of how accurate now that was a one list for all. You can find your lists here. You're maybe a little less Gavin it, so you, you know, it's a little man. I know I feel like we kind of have almost the same list in a way just phrase different. Well, the next one that we're going to talk about we both agree is a big topic for this year, which is quality of windows ten up dates, and my prediction is they've got to do something. And they got to do something more than these blog posts that they've been doing saying, hey, our quality is awesome. And we do a lot of things about quality. They've gotta make they've got to do something to show that they realized there is a problem. And I think they are going to they signaled this a little bit in the first blog posts that they did about quality. They said, you know, we get all these great tools. I mean, how to do quality. But we have some new innovations around quality coming, and I think it's going to be this year. We don't know what they are. But. We wanna hear them. This is that was my number one topic from last year as far as the the most important story. I think and it was the fact that those two feature updates both were disastrous from a quality standpoint as an by quality means a bunch of different things, not so much the quality of the product, meaning the contents of windows, ten version whatever, but rather the quality of the update that the delivering to people to get them to upgrade to that version of windows, ten huge problems in the process. And you know, when I looked to twenty nineteen I this is you know, it's like the bad beef at Jack in the box. Like, it's it's gonna go find this year. Honestly. Right. Because last year, it was such a disaster that they can't not do better in a way. And I think we'll try to obviously. And on the good news front having a valuated, a all of the blog post at Microsoft wrote about this next version of windows ten having installed it now and looked at the ones I can look at. I I see some addressing of this issue of had for many years to finish the job thing where they're they're they're working on the fit and finish of the product. And they've been doing it for the past three feature updates and it's starting to come together. And I I I do think that's nice. But yeah, I mean, I don't think well, and we could probably withstand anything at this point. But it's it would I can't imagine them doing having a third. Major feature update issue. In a row, he's constantly now. Well, you know, Chris cap said in in those those weekly senior leadership team meetings. They have this has come up, obviously. And when once a senior leadership team is all over this. It's like guys fixes very like it's not gonna it's not gonna just be. Oh, it was. Okay.
