"Last week at a hearing on the census and while the country wide rollout of the senses is still on track for a mid March start date at the oversight hearing officials from the government accountability office warned lawmakers that the census bureau has missed several key benchmarks in the run out according to the G. A. O. their shortcomings include not hiring enough census workers and feeling to partner with an adequate number of community organizations across the country but it's not just up to the federal government to ensure a complete count in the twenty twenty census across the country some states have allocated tens of millions of dollars to our senses out reach but others like Oklahoma haven't set aside any funding at all the census this year came up on a period of time when it was a new it governor's administration and we have a governor who's not familiar with politics in general he came from the private sector in a lot of his cabinet secretaries and staffers are also coming from private sector and they didn't realize that the census even though it's a federal issue does require states to provide support that's Joe Dorman a former Oklahoma state representative and CEO of the Oklahoma institute for child advocacy Joe and other nonprofit leaders in this state have partnered up in an attempt to make sure Oklahoma does have an accurate count in the next census and you tell me that while Oklahoma lawmakers initially dropped the ball on funding for the census some state agencies have managed to pick up the slack they found money by basically reducing budgets and other areas because of the critical the nature of the census I want a good example is our department of commerce is charged with submitting new addresses to the US census in Oklahoma the state department calmer submitted three hundred and forty thousand new addresses to the US census bureau part of that is because Oklahoma really didn't take the census as serious over the last two decades either so there was plenty of room to grow but fortunately the staff that's working on this in the state agency has done the work that was needed we're still missing the mark compared to other states when you look at California putting in more than a hundred and eighty million dollars compared to us peace mailing a project together it really makes me nervous that were we're not going to have the camp that we should never stay we should mention that you ran for governor as a Democrat in twenty fourteen and lost a Republican Mary Fallin to what extent has partisanship played a role when it comes to securing senses resources in Oklahoma fortunately when it comes to talking to lawmakers it impacts them directly the fewer people counted in their area that means their districts grow in size and that means more mileage they have to cover to get that count because every legislative district in the state is based upon population so it's been an easy sell our state Senate formed a complete count committee the pro tem of the Senate as a Republican and the democratic leader joined together to do a complete count committee to make sure that senators understood the need for this we're working to trying to use similar things in the state house and fortunately the state agencies are taking a very service I referenced governor state earlier one of the things is administration has done is created an ambassador program within each state agency that serves the population to make sure that each agency is aware of what's going on with the census and will help spread information to the clients that they serve in individuals receive services to understand the importance filling up the census paperwork this year and an undercount ultimately will hurt the state regardless of whether you're again at a Republican correct that is correct they are the estimates we hear about seventeen to eighteen hundred dollars per person per year if someone's not counted and the reason I see a is so involved in this is zero five age group is the hardest account because a single parent with two or three kids if they don't fill out the paperwork there kids are missed and it's not just for that one year it's for a ten year period so we lose out on those federal dollars so that's one group you mentioned a young children who are at risk of being under counted what other groups we talk about every minority falls into a hard account area generally because of the lack of resources going to those communities because generally minority populations live an impoverished areas at a greater rate and so trying to combat that poverty that impacts so many individual Oklahomans and Americans we're trying to get this information out to them get the assistance to them you also have role population especially in Oklahoma with so many tribal members living in the rural areas we're doing our best to partner with the thirty nine sovereign nations of that are headquartered in Oklahoma one good example the Choctaw nation of Oklahoma lost out on more than a million dollars in a grant which they sought because they didn't have an accurate count changes that happen with the census issue will allow individual tribal members to be able to list their individual nation rather than just simply native American and Alaskan Indian we know that in the run up to the senses the senses in particular Christ is a serious issue and getting people from certain communities to fill out the census how are you addressing those concerns in Oklahoma working with individuals that are familiar in each community we want to have familiar faces talking to individuals in conveying that that information because that will develop that sense of trust one example we sat down with about forty different partner organizations of work through the homeless alliance in Oklahoma sharing that information with each of the organizations to intern type back to their staffers in hopes of their staff will share that information with the homeless population that Sir so if an individual who is familiar with someone that message coming from them as going to have a much greater level of trust so what do you think will there be an accurate count Oklahoma for the twenty twenty senses if we have any say in this we're going to make sure that the war to spread as far and wide as possible if you look at the hard to count map that's put together on one the census websites for northwestern Oklahoma in far southeastern Oklahoma arm much of the problem area and far northwestern area we have a Latino workers on farms and in different factories in southeastern Oklahoma that's heavily populated by a tribal citizens and one of the issues we have down there is it's hard for standard state wide media to reach those areas because they simply don't receive any of the network news out of the Oklahoma City area so we're trying to get creative and spread it through nontraditional methods or social media through billboards newspaper advertisements the ways to reach those individuals I feel confident between the public and private partnerships were seeing in Oklahoma we're going to do much better than we done the last two rounds and I feel good about the census effort no calm even without the dollars that were missing out from the state government Joe Dorman is this E. L. I. V. "Com vote now which is a wet one so does it been awhile since we've had rain and it seems like people forget how to drive in the rain on newsradio one thousand Katie okay a four oh one thousand Lee Mathews Katie okay dot com do you know we've got an election coming up in Oklahoma City only so if you live in Norman more any the outside area you're not going to vote on this but it's coming up on the tenth of December and I will be here before you know it that's a Tuesday special election for maps for wait a minute I thought we just voted on maps three valued at it yeah we did and it passed and everything that we were promised and maps three is being built and from what I understand is paid for maps for is going to ask you to keep the sales tax because the sales tax was supposed to sunset after a few years and so the question will be should we keep that sales tax and use it for other stuff and people have already lined up with their hands out some people on a multi use facility specially the soccer team some people want mental health clinics in various parts of the city I black that idea quite honestly some people want a new animal shelter which I wouldn't say no to now for the record I don't have a dog in this fight because I don't live in Oklahoma City proper I don't like paying more sales taxes especially if those sales taxes don't have a return on their investment I have yet to determine whether or not the street cars have a return on investment I will tell you it doesn't look good right now every time I see them I don't see anybody else I love the return on investment we're getting with some of the walking trails I love some of the things that have been done downtown Bricktown et cetera I think our whole downtown midtown area is revitalized because of maps but should we this is this will be the question you'll be asked on December tenth should we keep that tax I'm also thinking that people in the city government there are looking for us was a slight turn out they don't want there to be a big turnout they want people to forget about this and they wanted to pass Lynne Reitz leave free market business means profit and success or they don't survive government on projects however never have to make a profit because you the taxpayer are always there to bail them out if they fail like the street cars or the river sport park this city can always go back to the general fund or they can raise your taxes again which is his big land what seems to be happening or at least keeping the tax going so it doesn't sunset that's the thing that bothers me you know the taxes supposed to sunset then let at sunset Caroline says maps was I say not used as an adverb as advertised the others were spent on schools only to have those schools shut down sidewalks that have been put in only this year private business built and to be maintained with public taxpayers money the brain child of Braun Norick Mick cornett Mary Fallin and a few others David Boren the came to comes to mind as well I plan on voting no on maps for and then Colin rights ha ha everyone in this group is just trying to make themselves relevant with nothing to real to talk about please tell me anything positive in Oklahoma City development that isn't a by product of maps this is silly laughing out loud and calling you got a point I mean there is a certain amount to be said business development is going to need the help of taxpayers an example is we probably would not have a bass pro shop in Bricktown had we not revitalized Bricktown we probably would not have a trader Joe's if we had not changed our liquor laws say that the same with cosco in fact I know for a fact cosco was not going to come until we change the liquor laws and it seemed to me they wait is November one last year that they broke ground and I thought they'll never have that thing and they had it up in two months boom now I wish whoever builds the cosco's and the and the on cues go to work for the for the road department dot they seem to have a hard time building anything in the time well I can't say that they build it they usually come in under bed I mean I'm sorry they usually come in early so they get a big bonus out of it but your thoughts a four oh one thousand leave at these on newsradio one thousand Katie okay to join in the conversation and the Sunland testimony that happened today first of all let's let's go over who ambassador Gordon psalm one is he was an ambassador for the United States to the European Union soul the fact that the U. crate and that Ukraine was going to or trying to become a part of the European Union fell in to his purview and he has been in testimony in the basement as they say several times now and has contradicted himself well today was the day that he was supposed to set everything straight did he and it didn't I mean I if the words were not out of his mouth when Democrats were scuttling out of that hearing room to try to spend it in their favor we'll get into that you can tell me which.

"One thousand Katie okay Lee Mathews talking about what's going on today and your calls to a four oh one thousand Michael our joining us and a half hour to talk more about impeachment the developments today and whether or not it's going to move forward and we'll get his take on it that's about thirty minutes from now and Beth Myers in the news fifteen minutes from now traffic and weather for minutes from now former Oklahoma City mayor Mick cornett tests called several Republicans this week to notify them he will not not run for Congress multiple GOP sources said cornet had been mentioned as a potential candidate in the fifth congressional district seat currently held by US representative can draw horn Democrat cornet sixty one ran for governor last year was defeated in the Republican run off and now Kevin I got a Kevin stepped one corn and has since been named to to the board of IBC bank Oklahoma and is in a position of the Jones public relations firm in Oklahoma fifth congressional district includes most of Oklahoma county and Pottawatomie county and Seminole counties as well Morton scored a major upset last year in defeating incumbent Republican Steve Russell as you may remember had served two terms Republicans have made the seat a top target in twenty twenty and the several candidates of already thrown their hats into the ring I including Stephanie Bice Terry niece Jenna Parisi Meredith man's aunt and David hill by the way seventy vice is my favorite at this point and I'm wishing her well in the preliminaries of everything cornet ran for fifth district seat in two thousand six it was defeated by Mary Fallin at the time I wasn't critical of Mick cornett I thought he would be a better mayor then a congressional candidate so that's why I rooted for Mary Fallin as the congresswoman at the time and because I wanted the court to stay as mayor I thought it was a good mayor even though I disagreed with the maps program but you know I don't agree with every candidate on every issue if I did I would be thinking and either would you so and because you disagree doesn't mean well I use it right now I heard so many times are you just right all right just because you disagree with him on one issue that maybe is a rhino so I lose patience with people who just disagree one issue and that one issue is that do you realize that is what kept Mitt Romney out of the presidency the one issue that everybody disagreed with them about any other one issue was he was a Mormon that was it that was it right there and dare I say that sounds a lot like religious discrimination but whatever I guess it doesn't matter now he also and I will add it wasn't a very good candidate I will add that to but many Republicans who could have gone to the polls and vote it didn't and I think it's because Ronnie was a Mormon and therefore couldn't bring themselves to vote for more and we can argue that if you like a four one thousand Lee Mathews Katie okay dot com I'll admit cornet not running for fifth congressional district I think that's a good idea if he would have you probably should have announced before now because there is a wide level of of of candidates and lots of great candidates so he would have a lot to compete against I also think he said he didn't win in the first time the other running for governor and for fifth congressional district may be seeing the writing on the wall stay in the private sector it's a lot cheaper lot more secure and I agree with that what do you think a four one thousand Lee Mathews Katie okay the game ball is on the way and this interests me because I've been a part of a program like this what is the program and what does it mean coming up on news radio one thousand Katie okay bills them for used to be the play by play guy for the Miami Dolphins he's not one of our correspondents with our news division twenty four seven news he is going to well I'm going to ask him I don't know if you will but I'm gonna ask him to shed some light on this in being a China controversy first of all I lost track of everything that's happened but basically the NBA is in China and is a popular entity in China and I have no doubt they want to tap the Chinese market because there is an emerging middle class in China with disposable income they're not emerging there there there there and soul the NBA has to placate the autocratic government in order to get that market exactly so what is more important that they get the market that they get the market share or that they turn their back on liberty that is what I think it boils down to but you mall that'll tell me what you think in the joint is about forty minutes.
