'Birds of Prey' Review: Nihilism for Fun and Profit

"Movie reviews let's jump right into it Eric how you doing okay all right Steve how are you good all right so we can see prepare children we got the movie reviews here which we do every Sunday we'll talk box office as well we'll catch up when I was off last week for the Academy Awards but Steve you did see birds of prey the Harley Quinn thing yes hi would you think well I mean it this is a film that once very desperately for us to believe that it's a G. and twisted in the NBA wanted so much to kind of forget to actually be edgy and twisted it keeps telling us how it deals with the the the and that's not to say that the the latest DC comics movie century isn't doesn't have its moments but certainly Margot Robbie's is was among the highlights of this sort of a spin off of suicide squad and she was certainly one of the highlights of that film but it is fun at times I I I like I can honestly say I can't think of a movie I've seen more recently they are seen so many people work so hard to convince me they're having a good time and yet the it's sort of extraordinarily conventional at the same time unlike unlike suicide squad which is sort of put together by a government agency the birds of prey kind of come together more naturally joker isn't actually in the sermon and by the way I should make it clear we're talking at the joker not the current dot that most recent joker iteration but the jerit letto joker from a couple years ago but he's not in this it doesn't matter but that doesn't stop the screenwriter who Christine at Hudson who did bumble bee which is actually a pretty good script from from sort of leaning into his influence on this whole story when were re introduced a Harley Quinn she and and joke or have just broken up which apparently means that any protection that she has being affiliated with him is gone so suddenly all the criminals in Gotham when the killer and I'm not exactly sure why but she has done some horrible things in the past I guess one of the people she has wronged is there is a crime boss this play by you and McGregor who goes by the name black mask something of sort of a flashy party boy E. but he kind of seems to have one speed in one elevated volume when he speaks he basically like rip Taylor in a black skull mask so he's more obnoxious than threatening the the hit the side kick that's played by Christmas Cena whose actually way more sort of deviant sinister and then black mass gives but we don't really get to see him that much but the the what happens is that they these these email characters all kind of come together some of them are more superhero oriented like a crossbow wielding huntress is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and then there's care during black Canary's played by journey small at bell and there's a young girl name Cass who's play ballads a Bosko is a police detective Renee mon twenty it was played by Rosie Perez and I gotta say of all of all the of all those characters Winstead in parens really kind of stand out I guess not surprisingly and it's it's actually kind of really great just to be reminded how much of a presence Rosie Perez can be and that when given the chance and given this kind of exposure and and sort of elevated in this way there is a far more interesting aspects of birds of prey than just the action of the actions not bad there's sort of a subtext about what happens to people when they sustain prolonged abuse or other forms of violence most of lead characters are suffering from some form of PTSD or another in the sort of find unique ways to cope with that it's a it's a shared condition that brings these women together and bonds them and makes them not only surprisingly strong as a team but but it's also sort of a new weird little group therapy thing the film doesn't address this directly but it's sort of hard not to hard to miss it like get a you know a like most things in birds of prey it's not exactly subtle but anyway the the I guess of the action sequences are kind of a mixed bag of sort of standard issue cases in explosions in fighting and with a few sort of clever original and and a little bit bloody idea sort of sprinkled in but a few case you're in curious birds of prey is actually yes very rated R. the some there's some gory violence there's some liberal usage of four letter words but I'm guessing the under age folks who will be speaking into this movie will not be traumatized by anything that they see it's got a great Sir high energy soundtrack to really bombastic score by Daniel Pembleton and and enough sort of deviance from Robbie and company to the keep it interesting mobile when the problem with the film is the bad guy even the Gregory is terrible in this he looks like he's having a good time but you know the thing I hate more than anything else in the world in movies is watching someone have fun yeah because it does not this I don't know I don't know what someone on a roller coaster I want to get on the roller coaster like so that's sort of the problem here and okay when DC finally figures out their bad guy problem they're gonna probably for anyway but that to me it's a mixed review but but that's about I got a I don't know if it's positive or negative all

"But it's it's so bad that I enjoyed it does sound like the room quality that it's in that territory. It's like, you know, McConnell the to McConnell as you have Dallas buyers club to detective, mcconaughey, and then everything else. Really? Yeah. It was everything else. Classic talk about hit or miss. It was a wild experience. But I enjoyed every second of it and McConnell is kind of over the cut. Actually, I was looking at the theater and there's a couple like walking behind me and they're like arguing. I know they were just leaving glass. Heavy like a like, what are they talking about? So I kinda like slow down a little shops. Never going added about what's better breakable split. Good argument. Yeah. And like I want I want a relationship. It's very close. Yeah. Yeah. I know something like that said, it's just me walking out alone after seeing serenity. It's of say you walk it out with me and say, so what do you think? There's a tension between us who's gonna say. So what did you think? I. Yeah. It's you know, you never wanna be the so what you think I am always the psychology think well for you. It's easy because you like everything that's true. Reevaluate based on what everyone else your scores only, go up. Yeah. That is true. There's always the person of your the group go last what everyone else's gauge the room the Dick Cheney of the group, they take everybody's points. And then combine them into one great does low key, Manny never talked. So like, you won't notice, but occasionally he'll just like wait for his moment. And then he'll just repeat anything. I've said earlier many is very much like Dick Cheney. Dick Cheney you seen vice twice big Cheney guiles sudden. I did orders biography. But yeah. So let's get into the first story here. What should we talk about? I I'm thinking birds of prey it's a good starting jumping off point. Thirty minute teaser Harley Quinn minutes. It's like half the movie third thirty thirty second quarter. My. Yeah. Thirty second teaser, and I thought it was a good teaser and this movie, I don't even know I I guess they just started shooting. So there's not that much footage for them to show us. We've been hearing about it for a long time though. Yeah. That's I can't believe there's actually people making the movie because with DC it's how many movies have they announced. And you just don't believe it until you actually see it. Even this feels like the actors just did it without one or others permission Margot Robbie it's like really heavily involved in the production. If it's not this movie might be a different movie, though, you're right. She's producing it. I hope it's good. The teaser was really I don't know how much the tone is going to match the actual movie or the trailer. But. People are praising it for being different. You know? But for me, it's got like a real suicide squad five from it. Like the same type of like just. I don't know just the same like atmosphere in vibe from suicide squad, which is not good. I hope this movie is good 'cause I very interested. Interested to see I love Maga, ruby as Harley Quinn, and everyone the cast looks pretty cool Christmas victors and a lot of people in that casting was announced they couldn't pitcher him in that role. But the way I think they've changed his hair little bit. He's got lighter hair and his face looks kind of misconstrued. It's a little droopy. Yeah. So and you and aggressive lack mask people that was the one that people were saying looks like house play. It's because he doesn't have the mask. Yeah. They wanna show you and McGregor. You have you McGregor? But also, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is hundred love that casting..

I have not called off camera with Sam Jones Sam Jones. Sam Jones is a photographer and a director. He created this show out of his passion for just like a long form conversational interview. And through that he sits down with artists actors musicians directors all sorts of folks who just peak is interest their total of one hundred and sixty four episodes over the last few names. Mary Elizabeth Winstead Sissy space. Wow, boredom. Wow. He's got great ones with Matt Damon? Aquafina? He sat down with recently with Ron Howard. Yes. And here's what's cool is he has a lot of authentic, friendships and acquaintance ships with people. So that they agree to just come in and chat with them. And they're usually about an hour, and it's fun. They're just free ranging conversations. It reminds me of that show that we've talked about called dinner for five with Jon Favreau. Yeah. You feel like you're sitting in on a conversation that you otherwise wouldn't be privy to talk shop in all the right ways in the ways that you wanna movie starring actor too. You know, you wouldn't wanna listen to an accountant or a welder talk shop. Would want listen to an actor? It's really very interesting. Sam Jones has a very easy laid back conversational style him. For for doing something that I would have loved to have done would've been great while goes all the way back to two thousand fourteen from memory serves he's got a great one with with will Ferrell as well. You know, John Krasinski like everybody's doing this though. He did it. I. I mean, he started back in two thousand thirteen his second episode is with John Krasinski. Listen to that one. That's great. Really good. Okay. Robert Downey junior. Tony hawk Dave Grohl of the foo fighters. Jut apostolic Laura Dern, Martin short was a great one will forte Jordan. I mean, I wonder if he has.

"We've got a bunch of new movies to talk about. And then Eric, and I are going to talk about the box office results for this past weekend as well. Three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred for talk and text, and let's get the guys in here and get the movie reviews going here is Eric. Eric, welcome. Thank you and Colin cedar, Colin, welcome. Thank you. All right. Some interesting stuff at the box office here. Eric, we'll talk about this later. But man, I was stunned by the numbers that venom. Did you do? I mean my God. Yeah. I don't get it. And there's there's a little bit to talk about what those numbers that. That thing going forward going to be kind of interesting. Okay. Well, we're going to do that. And so, but let's let's get into some movies right now, Eric tell us about all about Nina. Okay. Oh, this film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a stand up comedian who is she's single. She keeps men generally at an arm's length as far as serious relationships are concerned this again, she's currently in a questionable relationship in in a couple of different respects. She doesn't want to get too close to anybody. And she uses as many comedians do a lot of her life experiences in her stand up routine, which is frequently sort of dedicated to male and female relationships. You know, through the course of time, you know, doing stand up she ends up meeting a new guy played by common who is kind of the exact opposite of all the guys that she has been with our purpose. Perception of guys that she hasn't been with. He's a real gentleman he seems to really care for. But you know, as characters like, this tend to be that there tend to be very skeptical of jumping into that type relationship. Just because they just don't want to get themselves hurt. She's also on the site seems kind of a spiritual guru and ten and lives with her on occasion. And that that's an aspect of the film that doesn't quite work as well. But what really does work is Mary Elizabeth Winstead her performance in this movie is really the reason to to see it. I think we always seem enough movies about stand up comics, and one of the one things I think we can all agree on when we see movies stand up comic that usually the material in the movie is generally not particularly good. You gotta see why they're struggling stand up comic material, isn't that great? But here even though it might not be all around him laugh out loud funny. There's a real connection to this character. And there's a real connection to her experiences that really inform on the comedy. So while there are bits and in in her work that are worthy. You know? We really kind of see exactly where she's coming from. When she's uttering these words on stage. Terrific early scene where she's actually of walking through her apartment kind of massaging material trying to figure out exactly the best way to toward some of these things. Winstons performance in the movie. She's actually a pretty gifted mimic. She actually does impressions in the film that are actually they're actually quite good. And I think that the between Harney common war very well as well. Common. Is you know, it can be a very charming screen presence and has a tendency to to we just tend to believe what he's saying because he just kinda cool calm demeanor about him. And I think they're seen work together as well. It's not a perfect film by value body stretch. But the poems by Winstead is is really strong. And I think that what the film is ultimately leading up to is obviously something that is very much on everyone's minds today. And I think it it kind of one of the things that kind of you gotta go back throughout the movie and see where this character has been. And why she is the way she is. So I I think this this is a good film, a little film kind of off the radar, and I hope people find it because this this is really want us best performances. I think I'm a huge fan of hers, man. I just I think she's great. I love her and everything I especially loved her in the last season of Fargo. She was so great terrific. Yeah. But she's great everything. And since this is sort of, you know, like like her star turn I I'm really excited to see it except that it's only playing in Yorktown in Hodgkins. Yeah. Yeah. We're probably lucky that we even got that. I don't know. So and I checked and it's not on the because I was gonna watch it over the weekend. But it's not on the VOD. So yeah, that's unfortunate. Is it is? I mean, she's terrific. And I want to see what's available for for viewing at home. I will definitely was. So that's all about Nina, not an easy movie to find. But a good one. If you are a Mary Elizabeth Winstead fan, and who isn't that's that's the question. Cowan tell us about science fair. All right. Well, this is a documentary about what else the science fair, but this is like the granddaddy of all science fairs. It's the international science and engineering fair. And this draws in about seventeen hundred of the smartest teenagers in from around the world or seventy eight different countries of the numbers. I have here they face off. And only one will be named best and fair. And the film follows nine students from around the world who are working on some very intense science projects such as looking for a way to stop the virus from spreading the the the the cognitive effects of drugs and alcohol on on risk taking us. There's another project and other projects that will undoubtedly. Be beyond the comprehension of the average viewer who failed at least one science class in middle school. But I digress. And the the the the kids that the movie follows are from different countries different backgrounds, and and have the generally the right attitude when it comes to PD competing in these circles. Meaning, you know, it's not about the prize. It's about the work. And you know, I think the movie I think the the filmmakers here did a pretty good job of of picking vetting. Their subjects some are more interesting than others. And you know, it is kind of a risk that you take. If you're if you're gonna follow nine students out of like a potential deal. Like, I said seventeen hundred you know, we hope that at least one of them has some kind of arc to yield to carry the film along towards the end and the film Canada have that. But at the same time, it's there's something kind of nice about the weather reward anti-climactic for for some of that. And this is I it sounds like I just described a highschool version of spell spellbound from two thousand and three you'll you'll be right? It is pretty much of that. And it's generally not a whole lot of. A change in the formula for that. You know, this is the kind of documentary seen many times it's kind of the kind of plays out how you would expect a documentary about a science fair people competing at Hollywood play out. I I no doubt that I mean, I haven't seen every episode of documentary now, but I have a feeling this formula has been parodied. Maybe or will be soon. But that being said, I mean that is not to say, this is a failure already that is just formulaic, but it's a formula that works, and and and it works here to generally, I I mean, I I can't tell as emotionally drawn in as I was when I saw spellbound it's it's not as characters aren't quite as quirky that are a little more serious. I mean, they weren't serious and spellbound. But you know, what? I mean, they're a little more mature, I guess I would say. But, but I I think the movie gets by on a lot of, you know, on the message of just hard work and presentation and being able to sell yourself, which is a big part of the thing. It's not just about the work. But it's about how you present yourself. And I think that's how these nine students got by. You know, got through got got to be in this documentary and be the focus of it because they're very engaging. And and you know, how to talk to the camera and know how to how to present what they have. And and I it's definitely a message that needs to be put out there. It's obviously we need more scientists and engineers out there. And and the message of that is is obviously, you know, very potent nowadays. But, but it's also just about confidence level, and and and you know, just and and sort of. Working the room and being your best self in front of important people. And I think that's a good message for teenagers to have. And I think it was a good Bush message for for teachers to have as well. So I'm I'm recommending the movie, it's not great. It's like I said, but it's it is good at what it is. You know, what it tries to do and cheese. Most of what it wants to achieve. So it's an entertaining film minutes playing right now at the Cisco center, we'll be playing at the Willamette theater and a couple of weeks. I think all right cool. Right. That's documentary called science fair. Okay. Guys. Hang on. Okay. All right. Eric children's Cowan suitor. Join me every Monday morning to review the new movies got mortar review coming up, but we gotta break right now.

"You're talking to Jeff your kid. We tell you about him. We made one for you. Wait, you saw with my glee made you a kid. We had in time in time where we were getting big brothers club. Okay, that that's a better image. Those able to extract some DNA because I am at your house every week. And we made a clone of you. We call him little. You now named already taken. We call him Littler Jeff. That's I don't know if that's better less Jeff. I wouldn't if I don't want kids. And also if I ever do Jeff is not on the list of names. They're going to get fair enough. Any capacity fair enough by we named him mile. All right. All right. Before before he gets going on Moore, movie quotes wasn't a movie. I was just I didn't know where it came from, so I just assumed it was, but all right, here's our wildcard or wild card story and it's a casting store. There's always a casting story. It seems like, but birds of prey, they Faulk together, but the birds of a feather. Okay. My that birds of prey, they have been cast Mary Elizabeth Winstead and journey. Small at bell. Here's the thing. I recognize one of those names. Yeah, I only recognize the names. I don't recognize the faces, but you're not gonna marry Liz with face from Fargo and ten Cloverfield lane. Done other stuff, probably. I mean, but I mean, yes, those are kind of her bigger movies. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So here's, here's the big. Here's the big story on this one. So black canary who is also known as Dinah Lance. She's a streetfighter known for shrieking cry. She's in the air over. She's got the sonic thing while she was in the air over she is, I don't know. Maybe the IRO versus weird. She might still be there. So here's the thing era, verse wise, yes, black canary, is there? No, it is not laurel, Lance. Guinness, however, there is a laurel Lance, but it's too Laura, Lance, and that's black. Siren and era was stupid because. Kept up on it, but I do still watch it. So. The to watch arrow because occasionally at crosses over the other shows, and so it fills in plot. So Mary Elizabeth Winstead has run, has won the role of hunters and journey. Small bell is going to be playing black canary. They're gonna join Margot Robie. And if she's playing some character Harley Quinn is he must be a new new casting. Anyway, that's don't you remember that suicide squad movie? They don't remember. So I've been trying to forget it Jefferson. Now you brought it all back. I'm gonna have to go through that therapy session again. That was that was a BBS does. I know I tried to make him remember all ended cut. He hasn't seen that one. He saw about the of suicide squad. And in there there is the uncut version, the attributes version and movie. I don't wanna watch all three of them to find out what the differences, but I'm confused about why there's theatrical end movie, like what is the third disc is just called movie. I don't. It's really animated. See, I watched that. There they, they actually did have animated one fairly recently assault on Arkham. And if that's what is actually on that disc, I worth every penny, but I see, I just don't get how marvel- has become so good at live action. DC has become so good at animated and they don't seem to be able to cross over really like, I just, I just don't get the people who are doing. They're doing the opposites should just, you know, help out a little. I know, right? It's like, all right. We're going to have a take your counterpart to work day. Yeah, it's it's, it's interesting. So the big the big to do about this news casting is that journey see still thinks birds of prey is going to happen fish? Well, that's the nerd side of the big news, but the are. What do you think you are right now? Oh, on your baseball. So journey, small bell, though. The big controversy is she's black and traditionally black canary..

"The black with yellow trim the, they're all personalized this. Like I said as yet unnamed simulate. Pretty much lobotomize has host, so he can just use the body at will. You know any Brock's trying to lecture him, you know, by the difference between killing a murderer and battle and just pretty much. For all intents and purposes killing your host. He he's only keep him alive as a. Just a a method to move around because you know the semio's the host and this one is a brain dead host a, he's just basically using the body for. Like I said, he has access to all the Cree intelligence, Intel cars, mind, all of his history. He knows all stuff. Tell Carlos which if you know anything about the cream, that's probably not a good thing to have with an unhinged symbiosis. Who's basically acting upon his own with no, no conscious, you know, no human or cre- conscious to of keep him in check. He's just doing what he wants. So I would looking forward to seeing how the developed is dude, is he going to go good bad? Are they gonna use them a lot or just going to be a one and done and what kind of name you gotta give them a cool name, you know, venom and carnage to really cool names. What are you going? This guy. I mean, you can't just name him, Frank. You gotta give them a really cool Simione name. Batman fans, specifically Adriano fans. You're going to be pretty excited. Sean Murphy has been teasing. His next project will be Adriano central Centric. He is going to do his next thing is going to be Israel. He won't say, you know, they've come out and literally just adding of is going to be anything to do with the white Knight. And he just good question. You'll find out soon. So he's playing coy with it. Supposedly, there's going to be an official announcement at New York Cummock on this weekend, October fourth through seventh, we'll find out exactly what this new Adriano project from Sean Murphy is going to be. If you don't know odds rail, he's a really cool, Batman character just very righteous. And you know that with the name Oz rail and the sword. Good character can't wait to see his story. Sad news, a very prominent Batman artist norm brave Fogel passed away at age, fifty eight. He was pretty instrumental in detective comics and a lot of Batman and Batman shadows of the bat. He heals dabble a little bit in Malibu comics, the character prime, but he's mostly known for Batman, aren't worth. Passed away. Fifty eight. Doesn't say of what. But yeah, it's sad news recipes normally, Fogel, and thank you for all your Batman artwork. Birds of prey movie. They, we've got, I told you they were trying to find people to play black, canary hundreds. They've already got their Harley Quinn. It's going to be a Margot. Robbie. That's pretty much a given, but they're trying to cast a black canary and hunters black canary here on the left and hunters here on the right. They have cast supposedly cast journeys small at bell and Mary Elizabeth Winstead to play black canary and Huntress. So. You'll murmur -eckognize Winstead here. If you look closely to face, she was Ramona flowers on Scott pilgrim vs the world. Small Bill. I don't remember what I've seen her in before, but. Yeah, she, I've seen her a couple of things. Don't remember what anyway. So I believe she Wednesday is going to be the Huntress and small. It will be black canary. This is scheduled to be released February seventh of twenty twenty. So, I mean, this still got. You know year and a half before we're going to see this movie. They haven't finished casting yet. These are two of the main actresses that make up the birds of prey along with Harley. So I'm guessing they'll probably start filming sometime mid next year. Speaking of other big movies, monster Sony's, monster, hunter. Video game is going to be turned into a movie. They have cast to in my mind, really big names for this. You've got Mr. Ron Perlman in mill Jovic Ron Perlman. You'll remember him. He was the first hell. Boy. He was in sons of anarchy. He's he was in the couple of other movies. He was in blade three mill Jovic. You'll remember her is legal from. The name escapes me. Now, the Bruce Willis movie. What is it? Why can't I think of it. Okay. No help anybody. I'll just figured on my own..

"I forget what it's called, but they have. It's it's not good. Yeah, I the train concede probably allows them to deal a lot more that you know the plane would be a lot more contained in less exciting. Yeah, I I am going to go. I'm gonna go check this out because of all these tweets, I actually hit the mute the tweet on my mentions because my mentioned for just completely unreadable because of these people just responding to the article which HD you wrote and it's not like you were like excited for this remark. Well, actually, I'm surprisingly not angry about it either because I think JAMES BOND is really talented. He created the entire conjuring universe, which is like one of the few horrors in a matter universes today, I think in his hands, this wouldn't be a bad remake, even though the original again is perfect. I think the the premise is so simple and kind of bare bones that you really could put it anywhere just it wouldn't emit dot or probably wouldn't measure up to the original. Yeah. And of course, James one is going to produce. He's not gonna direct when I was visiting him in the editing room of the the Oklahoma. Editing room. One of the first questions I asked a question that our own Chris Ed and those like when are you ever going to direct another horror movie? And his answer was kind of disappointing eight. It was kind of he brought up Sam Raimi's. Drag me to hell in basically said like, you know, Sam Ramey found a way back. I will eventually find a way back, so I don't think that's can happen anytime soon. I would be more excited for this movie. I think if one was actually directing, but like you said, he has produced some some good horror films as Well. Chris, are you just totally not interested in this remake. I don't know. I mean, it depends on who they hired it or directed and all that stuff, but I really don't. The original is indeed still on Netflix. So you could just go watch that like, you don't really need to remake this specially so soon. Okay, so check that out on Netflix. Let's move onto a big bit of comic book, casting news, and that is that birds of prey have cast to new actresses for the film Christos, but it, yes. So you know a few days ago, we wrote up a story about how bunch of actresses where we're reading for various parts in the film, and now to have been kissed, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is going to play Huntress and journey smell at bell is going to play black canary in the film. And of course, Margot Robbie is starring in the film as Harley Quinn. And this is going to be Warner Brothers, big DC female driven team film, which is set to open in February of twenty twenty. I mean, you know what? What differentiates this from the other DC film? So we know about so far just in case people aren't falling birds of prey. Well, I mean, it's. There's a female director which is a lot different. I mean, you know, moral, I mean, obviously has Patty Jenkins, but up until now she was the only female director. They had. I, I don't know. I don't know what differentiates this from DC film just because I haven't seen it yet and there's always a chance it'll turn out to be bad just like all the other DC films except wonder woman. But I'm, I'm a little more optimistic for this just because it just seems like they're, they're really gathering a good amount of talent to make this happen. Yeah. No, it does seem like they are. The cast is actually a good cast. I know Mary Elizabeth wooden stead is very picky. I'm the role. She takes cheese, you know, being offered, you know, a lot of big stuff that she's turned down. So for her to take this, I think is maybe a vote of confidence. And I did want to point out the Caitlyn booth who has also journalists pointed out on Twitter that now this has been, I think, five or six people that were in at great Scott pilgrim vs the world who have since become..

"Welcome back to the frame. I'm John horn, the new film. All about Nina is about a stand up comic who brings her raw raunchy brand of comedy from New York to Los Angeles. She also does some impersonations. I am Nina and this is York ordering a smoothie. I would like the memory of my first Christmas and also the underbelly of fairy with the sweat of a newborn thier and unpegged millions and millions of of urban electrons. Okay. Nina is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. The film is written and directed by vivas and it's perfectly based on her own life story has until now mostly been working as a screenwriter. But a couple of years ago she directed the short film join the club. It had two characters, a woman and her therapist when vivas join me in studio. She said that in that short film where some of the seeds to all about Nina, but I wanted to see if I could do is to just have a short and sincere look at a woman's in her voice and see if I could do that. Well, because it it seems simple, but I actually think it's really hard. So it's just. Therapy session between a woman and her therapist, and it really the inspiration was a friend of mine who had been invited to join a Women's Club and sort of talked herself out of it for forty, five minutes therapy. And then I took that kind of theme to Nina, which is a very different story. But the idea of somebody of a woman being creative, an honest and openly. So what is it about somebody who's doing comedy? That lends itself to this kind of story because the character played in this film by Mary Elizabeth Winston is a comedian, and what she's telling is often incredibly personal. It becomes more personal story goes on, but there's some relationship between audience and performer and therapy and comedy. That's really kind of magical and yet very dangerous at the same time. I know. I agree. I think that's why I've always been fascinated by comedy and comedians. I, you know, I moved to New York from Spain when I was eighteen and I almost immediately started. And into that sina I've never done stand up. I don't have the balls to do it, but I loved it. And yeah, I think obviously I'm not saying anything new, but so many, you know, they say like, it's funny because it's true, right? So much of what comedians do onstage is either tell the truth or pretend like they're telling the truth because the best ones also tell you story like they just came up with it when really they've been working and rewrite in it for months, you know, so in and I used to go back and see all the same comedians and see how they changed their lines delivery, depending on what worked and what didn't. You know the writing was really interesting to me. And I guess in a way it's Eric to'real because you could see both the performance happening the writing and then the reaction, but it was immediate. So in retrospect I think really I was just preparing to be a director. Watching your movie. I couldn't help think about Hannah. Gadsby Lewis, an incredible comedian. She has a Netflix special called the net and Hannah Gadsby. It's really deconstructing the idea of what is and is not funny. And what is the relationship between the comedian and the audience about the stories that she is telling? And it feels like a lot of your story too is about what this character feels that she needs to share, what she trying to figure out through her comedy story goes on Mary, and I talked about this a lot when when we were shooting obviously. And prior to I, I always thought that the character that percents on stage is her which she would like to be her best self..

"Simply one of the best as we've and who lists people of your own my god one of the coolest i mean really if she was only there for a few days and she just left such an impression on every one of their members like oh we loved her so much with good reason yes yeah of talk about films of people have seen as opposed to some of the worthy films that may be don't get see you have another terrific part intend cloverfield one yeah and i i felt junk i good sorry freaky right now it was their hair wing yeah yeah definitely a harrowing story that's such a cool such a cool move it be cool and it's such a trip and it's it's one of those when we see movies separately i we sorta like we try not to spoil freechoice trying to ask too much but when i finally got see the moving i came home it was one of those like immediately a powwow happened right going home i god what do you think about that what do you think about that can you imagine i hit so good oh i'm so glad it it was amazing because so many people saw it but i never knew i did not expect that happened it was a tiny movie tiny movie that became a big movie so that never happens you know units never y you never have experiences were things do far and away better than you expected at least i don't i used to the the opposite thing where you can hope something as well and then but he sees it you know it it is what it is and i've never been to worried about that kind of thing but it was like such a wonderful surprised to have that movie too so now vote the most films are not shot in sequence rear the film shot in sequence.

"A very high percentage of pool movies thank you i mean you know noone known hits home on every sayings high rate and no one sets out to make a bad movie yes knows but among your movies are this cluster of really cool films and you just mentioned one of them now we had another argument only over here i wasn't an argument was inciting girl much because i was lucky enough to see grind house quentin tarantino's grind house the way he originally wanted everybody devil feature as a double feature all one unified than with trip with phony trailers and phony bumpers for coming soon and all that stuff and as a three hour experience them and it was just so enjoyable and and and so original such a movie fan eggs yeah ended as leia to have the the the sort of the audacity to do than his audacity in the behind on elderly like i don't will have hours ovalles you know harvey weinstein has been a loyal to quentin as rand has been to him but they decided they just couldn't wasn't going to work it wasn't going to play that way so they in fact then cut the movie in half made to movies out of it which was sort of but then the lengthened each one and you're in the one called death who which is again pretty cool wrinkle and so so tell us about meeting quentin for the first time yeah and and that experienced sure that was incredibly exciting definitely of of my kind of working actor experiences that just that audition was a huge highlight because it was you know.
