"Journalists skip Hollandsworth notes that some men in town put forth an even more absurd and racist theory. He wrote quote. They concluded that some sort of mystical killing mania was sweeping over Austin's black neighborhoods. The way they saw it the murder of Molly Smith EH inflamed the bloodthirsty instincts of other young black men leading them to commit similar murders of those black women. They didn't like Nick. According to Journalists Sonia Sotomayor ski it was also around this time that the killer was given his nickname the serpent girl on I later it was coined by I. Short story writer O Henry. He'd recently taken up residence in Austin. Oh Henry wrote to a friend in May eighteen. Eighty five town is fearfully adul- except for the frequent raids of the servant girl annihilates who make things lively during the dead hours of the night though. Henry's deadpan Japan. Attitude reflects that of many of Austin citizens at the time but despite the public's Flip Ins- and Far Fetched Theories Austin Police officers were more grounded grounded in their search for a culprit surgeon. John Chinni Ville had his eye on one suspect. In particular a twenty two year old man named Oliver Townsend Townsend was a notorious chicken thief known around Austin for his ability to sneak in and out of coops without waking any of the birds based on this ship Ville fought townsend might also have been able to sneak in and out of servants quarters. Without being caught Shinni Ville had townsend arrested after interrogation failed. Shinni Ville beat towns into a pulp but townsend didn't crack under the pressure. He insisted he was innocent. He may have been a thief but he was not a murderer. His will was so strong that finally after hours of questioning. The police let him go soon after but killer struck again. When we return we'll discuss the servant girl annihilates most brutal crime and now back to the story by the summer of eighteen eighty five the so called servant girl and I later had claimed the lives of three young black women in Austin Texas and attacked several more? You're a clear pattern emerged. The killer struck under the cover of night and gruesomely bludgeoned his victims in their beds but with only a vague description from a young witness and a set of bloody footprints to go on. Investigators were stumped. They had no viable suspects and little idea. The of what to do next they could only hope the killer would make a mistake soon or stop his brutal rampage for several weeks. The Servant girl annihilated later remained quiet but just as the citizens of Austin began to feel safe again. The city was thrown back into chaos on August thirtieth eighteen eighty five. Rebecca Ramey ended her workday in the kitchen of her employer. Mr Valentine we'd but didn't return to the servants quarters instead she and her daughter eleven year old Mary Ramey stayed behind and slept on the floor. They'd been sleeping in the the kitchen for weeks because they were too afraid to go back to their quarters. At night they knew cooks and other servants throughout the city had been targeted by the killer and feared for for their lives. Unfortunately there precautions weren't enough in the middle of the night. The killer crept into Mr Weeds kitchen before before Rebecca could even scream. She was hit with a long club and knocked unconscious. The killer may have attempted to drag Rebecca off but that she was larger than his other victims. It's possible he was unable to move her and so he instead dragged her eleven year old daughter Mary outside. He took the girl to an outhouse where he sexually assaulted her and killed her with a sharp metal rod. Rebecca woke the following morning and call the police. They found her daughter's body along with the club she'd been struck with and another set of bare footprints while investigators at the time time were once again at a loss the annihilated pattern fits what we now know as that of a disorganized killer according to criminology. Professor Dr Dr Scott Bon disorganized crimes are not planned and the criminals typically leave evidence such as fingerprints or blood at the scene of the murder murder. There's often no attempt to move or otherwise. Conceal the corpse after the murder. The Servant girl and I later certainly didn't make much of an effort to hide his killings. He left behind footprints and other evidence at several crime scenes. He also left the bodies of his victims out in the the open. Dr Bond also explains that disorganized murderers often you sudden and overwhelming force to assault their targets. Such chaz bludgeoning victims to render them unconscious however Austin's eighteen eighty five police force didn't have decades of psychological research to utilize. Yes they pursued. The only lead they had and once again used bloodhounds to track is sent from the crime scene leading them to a barefoot. Man named Tom Allen nine Allen's footprints matched those at the crime scene and police arrested him immediately however his name was cleared shortly after a medical examination proved not was not the man who raped Mary. Austin police were reaching the end of their rope. They were desperate to make another arrest and to calm an increasingly fearful public to make matters worse. Racial relations within the city had been growing ever more. Tense the eyewitness report that the killer had been black. Set The white people of Austin in a state of unease black people had only been free from the bonds of slavery for a two decades and segregation and other forms of racism were still rampant. Many white citizens within the city began to use this report as as an excuse to distrust black citizens altogether even one of the most progressive news publications of the time the Statesman claimed the killer. Learn how to be a black man given to quote idleness and drink by insinuating. This man's exceptionally gruesome and heinous crimes could the explained by mirror idleness drink. It seemed to many black citizens that the publication was implying. That any and all black men would be capable of such which horrors if they allow themselves to become idle or drunk. This insinuation was both racist and harmful some white members of the community even even claimed the murders were proof that black men and women would always be animalistic and savage even as the black community was quaking in fear ear members of the white community. Were blaming them for the terrors day themselves were being subjected to the black community. Grew ever more fearful of of being hunted down by the police's bloodhounds. They feared the police. Dogs had been specifically trained to track down only black men one of the men who was most. Mr Frayed was a black man named Alex. Mack Alex Mack was notorious throughout Austin for being one of the most frequently arrested people in the city. He was known to brawl in the streets to steal when he could and to get drunk and disorderly in public on many occasions according to author J. Jr Galloway Mac had a criminal history and his reputation did him no favours when he was found in the vicinity of the Mary. Ramey murder in August of eighteen eighty five according to police Mac fled the scene when Shimmy bills dogs found Alex. Mack hanging out at the black elephant elephant. Saloon Max feet and legs were covered in Asa Fateh. A potent putty made from roots sour vegetables and various via spices. It strong smell was meant to throw off bloodhounds. The US of Fatty data made Mac look even guiltier and Sergeant Shimmy. Villes is. Mack was arrested and kept in custody with the hope that the police would convince him to confess to the killing soon. Police thought they had finally found owned the killer. I think there's a real chance he could <hes> work into that number. Two spot love that so maybe a little bit higher than his a._d._p. On one eleven he's he's like one thirty. I was targeting him for the my next pick. I was actually debating between him and rashad penny. I wanted the additional running back up now. I have not after after the quarterback dick have you have you grabbed a quarterback yet now. There's there's plenty of and there's only twelve of us in this right yeah yeah. I'm fine with i think without i think when you're in a standard twelve team league with your buddies if you don't take one of those league is you kinda. Just wait to the last last guy right yeah for me. It's those top four guys i. I assume we're gonna see look play by the third preseason game in that won't this so this won't be an issue. Bert might not be a story moving forward so yeah. It'll be interesting to see <hes> <hes> what i can do with this ninth round pick. Do i go tight end. I still need a tight end with that's similar to quarterback. There's so many guys where it's like. Oh speaking of the devil eric ibran goes yeah and he's a guy. It's tough to like him. Because the biggest complaint about eric brown was he caught too many touchdowns last season which is a weird thing to complain about but with everyone being so aware of regression <hes> it seems also jacked oil when he came back out snapped opt out targeted him <hes> they've added devin funchess. They have re rookie paris campbell the the the thought processes. There's more people to feed. I think andrew lucked just enjoyed throwing the ball in the endzone. Eric lebron's just letting him go get it. I guess the the concern would be devon punches. <hes> ah yeah i'm gonna go with maybe he's better in best ball league but gimme. The shunned jackson that that that deep connection with wentz wants israel. It's going to be a value and <hes>. I would definitely have some of him in in a best ball. I think he'll have a couple of huge games. He's probably not a guy start it every week but we want against the against the against the redskins. I could definitely see myself tournament. There vance mcdonald's the other guy. I thought about getting he's off. The board jared cook off the board decay metcalf off in joke. You curtis samuel all of the board kramer. What are you doing well well. I think <hes> i look at my roster. I need another i probably could i needed tight end. I still still don't have when i was going to grab vance mcdonald. He got taken can two picks performing. I'm going to have to look elsewhere and i i like the valdis scan scaling pick <hes> but i'm gonna take the other side <hes> drano komo alison at this point. I think we'll know pretty early if he's going to be involved enough. I think the jury is still out. I know the buzz is all over vowed s gambling. I'm intrigued. Were in the ninth round. So i think decent value here. He could be a very productive receiver and a good offense so yeah drown them. Oh latavius mary austin hooper for dick. What are you grabbing. I need a third wide out here with the beckham and julio. I'm going james washington. Oh ooh yeah. I liked that pickup. You know look pretty good last year number two receiver that offense with antonio gone. This guy's a starter now so think it's a big jump this year yeah i could see him. I can see washington get new. I think he could have like sixty seventy catches crazy. I think i think will monitor moncrieff is still i mean i saw what happened. The preseason game but i think moncrieff is still technically number two <hes> so look out for that but i i agree i. I think the steelers themselves really like james washington. Yeah alright what what's happened in human off the board. That's certainly pretty late considering he. It seems like he's gonna have a role in denver. They're gonna wanna pound the rock dick. You're back on the board..

"Sometimes they went for a small performance if he wins God forbid, he will win for that last twenty minutes where he recreated Freddie, Mercury and brought him back to life. But the real problem with the whole thing he hit two things. One, freddie. Mercury. Didn't tell any didn't even know yet. It's when they did the Wembley first of all. So you're going to build the whole movie up to this in the idea awful. Let's tell the story of this guy because he there really is another concert where he's wearing a Betty. Boop Togay kid you not. And that is his last performance where he shows his incredible dynamism in lettuces them. And that is the one that you watch and you're reduced to tears because you know, he knows that he's dying and that people should look up on YouTube. And I think it might also be. Wimbley? Can't remember? Where he died of. And it was very his last performance, and he knows and he gives leaves it all on stage. But the other problem is, Freddie Mercury. The actual, Freddie. Mercury was an unequivocal absolute staff who was dropped on this planet. And when you hear his voice during the film when they using his vocals, and they claim they used a mix wanna hear about a mix place. They didn't use a mix. Okay. They claim that some of that was Rami Malik singer. Sing over a two. And then I'll still sell MC, Freddie. Mercury when they use him. Okay. I mean place, but Freddie, Mercury had a voice like a jet engine in. When you hear that performance? You think what the hell my watching this movie for it? Why aren't I just watching videos framework has nothing can touch, Freddie? Mercury. And I will say what office also bothered me. And this is the throwing shade conversation. What also bothered me is that anytime. He's speaking truth anytime that he was going to hook up with a guy a was looking up the guy. Yeah. Or was being brought into a disgusting drug filled lifestyle. It was all montage all why the dialogue with Mary Austin in this day and age the woman to play Mary Austin. He's great. Who he left everything to? Yeah. Why? When he says, I'm bisexual does. She say, no, your gay, and they leave it there. Because that wasn't the try that that was atrocious. Yeah. Trinity shouted a person who never said said that out loud and also wasn't gay. He was bisexual. So I don't understand what the filmmaker whoever the filmmaker happened to be in that scene because they didn't want to deal with the new ones that was necessary to tell a complete story about human that was being in a wide release. Like we've to explain his actual loss of would make them bisexuals. I mean, he had sex with anyone else. But it Mary, and then Mary is no longer. And then Mary is no longer the Virgin, Mary, which is what the playing her as in the movie. That's right. Can I say one thing that this for touched off for me ways that it was directed by pedophile? Sorry. We should actually talk about. That's all there. Bryan singer was that he was even allowed to do anything anymore. Oh, Lucan look forward to his next. Film after this. Really? I saw Bob Geldof. Oh, yeah. I went down a rabbit hole. Yeah. Of where did Bob Geldof make all of his money, and who is bugged his Live Aid, the promote that live short pixie, and Trixie and peaches Galicia h is now he also did I was actually Michael Hutchence's died. Abi Dopp today. Yeah. Go on the he also did. Let them know Christmas whatever day. Yeah. So my favorite song of all time. Maybe we'll dollars off of those charity events millions. So when I saw the thing, we're queer, Freddie break breakers. Like, we're doing this for free. I was like Bob Geldof make money off of this. I don't know if he did particularly off that event. But anyway, just want to say like we did get a couple of bohemian rhapsody questions. Should I should we do this now? Or would you want to do them out the end we could do one now? Yeah, here's one. This is from Robert I won't say his last name. Hello longtime listener first-time caller would love to hear the panels thoughts on the whig work and bohemian rhapsody..

They remain diverted to each other full-day tie alive. Like, they all the most important national is lives, or at least among people. There's a little weird speculation from the biographies about exactly what their relationship constituted all of. And I think this is mostly just because people kind wait it out by anything that doesn't fit into a neat box of what we think relationships all so joins talks about like home. She played like a mother roles him and stuff like that. Maybe she did. But other field until to like get this not much. Yeah. Though, very devoted until there. "One day. That means we'll take your Monday morning movie reviews. If you saw a movie over the weekend, it doesn't have to be something that was in theaters. But something you just happened to see give us a call six five six four one one zero seven one I saw bohemian rhapsody. All right. You guys I loved it so much Ted. I loved it. I want to see it again. Oh, that's exciting. Yes. It was so good. And here's the thing. Okay. Basically, the movie is celebrating Queen and their music and the friendship of all the bandmates. Basically, it's their story leading up to this huge Live Aid concert. Do you guys familiar with Live Aid at all Live Aid? So Live Aid was a concert that took place in all different parts of the world. In London was a big location. There were other locations, and that it was broadcast pretty much everywhere there, we're talking a billion people saw this this concert ran all day long. And if you weren't there it was on your TV all day long, and it is one of the greatest performances in the history of rock and roll. I actually remember seeing a lot of this performance on of of Queen and they had kind of broken up. They weren't broken up, but they weren't recording together. And they kind of reunited for this performance in the movie is beautifully shot. Rani malik. Unbelievable. I mean, if this guy without a doubt, he'll be up for an Oscar. Whoa. Debone? Oh, without a doubt. He's incredible. The the problem with it is let's see when do the Oscars happened in February. Okay. So it's none of it. Yeah. He probably will be sometimes it's the timing that throws it off. But you should be considered an Oscar timing release though, December even like October November December. That's when they come out on believable. I I really think that the issue that some of the critics had with this movie is that it's watered down it doesn't dig deeper into Freddie, mercury's relationships with like well with his father. They they get some details. Wrong on other things you feel that it was missing that. I didn't I didn't. I didn't even care that they sanitized his image with some of the other criticisms, I absolutely absolutely love to. I think the music moves you so much and the story of the birth of these songs and Queen style was enough to sustain my my happy place. My interest one thing I will say. I don't know why we needed Mike Myers in this movie. Who does Mike Myers played against as an early record executive executive Earl by early. I mean early in the movie and in in their career and costume or did you immediately recognize like there is for asking. That's the problem. He looks like he's in makeup and costumes. So you almost feel like. It's just a bad choice. You almost feel like they put a cartoon character in the middle of this story is he does he fo a British accent? Yeah. So it's Austin powers. Yeah. That's how I felt. But some very interesting stuff. I wasn't a huge Queen fan. I forgot how many hits they actually had. But one of the interesting things about the story is that he had this. Let's call her his soul mate. This woman named Mary Austin. I think is her name. She's kind of kept herself distance from this project. But she did give the approval like, you know, I think they just wanted all the people who are in his inner circle she is the one person who he entrusted with his ashes after Freddie Mercury died and to this day. She is the only person who knows where they are. Now, they never got married, but he was madly in love with her. But he was bisexual and that's revealed to her in this. And so that kind of puts the kabosh on their relationship, and it's just this this common thread throughout the movie. It's it's very very very interesting. Interesting. It's a great movie, I loved it. So much we wall we're talking about this too. If you're just joining us we're talking about bohemian rhapsody. They just did the lie. They have the Live Aid performance remastered, and we have a little clip of Queen. Gotcha band..

"I see. What? Blues. Be. On. And we're back and buckle up diggers because we need to talk. Unfortunately, I'm not really sure where to start. So this film tracks the history of Queen from Freddie, joining smile to the eighty five Live Aid performance along the way, Freddie meets Mary Austin. The ban gets picked up by EMI record some tunes. Kick ass in concerts. Freddie becomes an intolerable asshole due to his excess and gets exploited by Paul Prentice comes to a census contracts aids and reunites to perform at Live Aid. And that's the plot. In a nutshell, if the timelines there seem off this isn't real life. This is just fantasy. But we'll get there. I do wanna talk a bit about what works in this field. Rami Malik really is as good in this film as you have heard. He is his scenes in particular with Lucy Boynton playing Mary Austin are exquisite Romney plays over the top when it's appropriate. But he dials it back in. Particular with his scenes with boy, the band altogether, have great chemistry and the most fun. You'll have in this film is when they're in the studio together..

"Monday. That means we'll take your Monday morning movie reviews. If you saw a movie over the weekend, it doesn't have to be something that is in theaters. But something you just happened to see give us a call six five one six four one one zero seven one I saw bohemian rhapsody awry. You guys I loved it so much Ted. I loved it. I want to see it again. That's exciting. Yes. It was so good. And here's the thing. Okay. Basically, the movie is celebrating Queen and their music and the friendship of all the bandmates. Basically. It's their story leading up to this huge Live Aid concert. Do you guys familiar with Live Aid at all Live Aid? So Live Aid was a concert that took place in all different parts of the world. In London was big location. There were other locations, and that it was broadcast pretty much everywhere there, we're talking a billion people saw this this concert. It ran all day long. And if you weren't there it was on your TV all day long. And it is one of the greatest performances in the history of rock and roll. I actually remember seeing a lot of this performance on of of Queen and they had kind of broken up. They weren't broken up, but they weren't recording together and they kind of reunited for this performance. The movie is beautifully shot. Rami Malik unbelievable. I mean if this guy. Without a doubt. He'll be up for an Oscar. Whoa, debone. Oh, without a doubt. He's incredible. The the problem with it is let's do the Oscars happen in February. Okay. So it's none of it. Yeah. He probably will be sometimes it's the timing that throws it off. But you should be considered an Oscar timing release though, remember December even like October, November December. That's when they come out. Unbelievable. I I really think that the issue that some of the critics had with this movie is that it's watered down it doesn't dig deeper into Freddie, mercury's relationships with like well with his father. They get some details. Wrong on other things you feel that it was missing that. I didn't I didn't. I didn't even care that they sensitized his image with some of the other criticisms, I absolutely loved it. I think the music moves you so much and the story of the birth of these songs and Queen style was enough to like sustain my my happy place. My interest one thing I will say. I don't know why we needed Mike Myers in this movie. Oh who despite Myers played against as an early record executive executive Earl and by early I mean early in the movie and in in their career. Okay. And he in costume or do you immediately recognize like there is for asking? That's the problem. He it looks like he's in makeup and costumes. So you almost feel like. It's just a bad choice. "Fortune favoured this film because yes, it has similarities with a lot of different rock biographies, which is brilliant young star rises to the top and then gets into trouble, and then often in these films, you sort of come back. The film begins with a real life performance in live eight and nine thousand nine hundred five and then it sort of flashes back, and what's different about the movie is it doesn't emphasize self destructive drug addiction or horrible behavior. But it does show. Freddie. Mercury. Who was a fascinating guy. He was from Zanzibar and of Persian ancestry and Rami Malek who was gyp shin. American is is remarkable in the way that he captures his movements on stage and that he fashions a performance complete with prosthetic teeth because Freddie Mercury. Had all kinds of problems. He is embarrassed about his teeth a sort of any even allude to it in the film where he's asked about it in any event. The the film also has a fascinating story of his romance, which was ill assorted play with a woman named Mary Austin, who is sort of his muse, and that was complicated because the real life, Freddie, Mercury was homosexual. And the film goes through those contradictions there is not a moment of it. That is uninteresting. It works remarkably well, including some of the long re-creations of the songs, most of which use the real voice of Freddie, Mercury as enacted by Rami Malek, this film should not have worked as well. As it does three and a half stars of for the PG thirteen rated bohemian rhapsody for anyone who's at all interested. In Queen and its work. I think you'll find this film fascinating. And I suspect it will be a very major hit. We will be right back. And yes, we will rock you coming up on the Medved show. "Yes, was removed from this project for variety of reasons he has some indiscretions with with a young boy he was showing up late for work. So they pull them off the project. He's still gets credit here for directing the film. Anyway, I've monopolize the time. Before I let Kathy go. I will say this more people are arguably going to agree with you. Then me after they see this movie. So I'm just gonna know. I flipped it a couple of reviews since I wrote my now and never read anything until I've read I'm talking about the movie public. I think that the people the the movie going public who wants to go to the theater and see this movie is excited about this movie. And by the way, I was really excited about it. I think they'll think it was. Okay. Having said that I hated it. Go ahead. Okay. Okay. You want to hear the other side from an entertainment standpoint. I absolutely loved it. You have to remember Mark. And I guess that are the same age, and I've has his Jane, okay. Okay. Perfect. So no that right away. Rely younger. Anyway, back to the movie. No, I really enjoyed it from an entertainment standpoint. I couldn't wait to see the movie just like, Mark. I couldn't wait to see Romney Malik play. Right. I enjoyed every minute of it now to Mark's defense. Yes, they take a lot of things out of sequence. But the minute a lot of things out of CNA. Don't tell you that. Or how do you like, for example, they took creative? Liberty is in the fact that they tried to tell this story. And I think that they manipulated stuff around two small example here just I mentioned we will rocky. Okay. Let's give that a pet. Freddie. Mercury was diagnosed with aids after the Live Aid concert the Live Aid concert is in. That's actually interesting the whole last twenty minutes of the movie is a recreation of that concert. But he was he didn't have aids until after that the movie has that very different. That's just another example again, I could point out six or seven things Rolling Stone did a piece about this and some other music fat bottomed girls is in the wrong place to later. Right. Right. And that's one of my favorite Queen songs. You know, like I said I was excited to see the movie I took my girlfriend who had sixteen years of age. You know, her name is Ken cross shouted, Karen. Saw Queen live here in Saint Louis begged her parents to let her go at sixteen to go. See it. My my nineteen Eighty-one show at the the arena. Yeah. Them live at the arena, and she sat next to me and the whole time. She was, you know, apprehensive I kept telling her, it's a PG thirteen film. They're not gonna late, Freddie, and his sexuality and all that. It's rated PG thirteen I took that as a positive in the fact that a lot of youngsters millennials are coming into loving this music that we all grew up with we all absolutely loved are going to get to see it. Right. You know what? I mean, I understand that that's part of the movie making process, and why they did it that way is that a lot of younger viewers can see it. I guess what? I wanna know though. Because the obviously you want to tell a good story. And sometimes when you're not saying, okay, it's not a documentary. It's never been billed as right? So you would expect absolute genius. The truth is more interesting than the things made up. Why not go with the truth? So was was the what were the things moved around in order to? I think you're why would they would have done that because you're consolidating time rose twenty year period in trying to get very important parts of their music that everyone knows cohesive story. Yes, they had. I was. I was very excited about the fact too that they worked in Mary Austin, which was totally the love of Freddie, mercury's life. They messed that up to well, it was not even close to being accurately portrayed again. I I better be quite because. No, it's okay. I think that if the truth is more interesting than the things they made up they should've gone with the truth a little bit more..

"You saw the story the other day do you ever notice that sometimes I wonder what would happen if? Julius random thoughts. He looks like that puppet. I don't know. He said she can't plans it's just random. That's all it is. All right. So today's random thoughts is going to be about the song bohemian rhapsody by Queen. In last night panic at the disco did a cover that was amazing on the AMA's. And so the movie's gonna be coming out. Alec was at the. Yes, he was. So the movies coming out November second bohemian rhapsody. It's about the story of Queen focusing a lot on Freddie Mercury. Who was the lead singer of Queen who lost his life to aids? So I kind of movie is going to be good. Yeah. All this. I do I really do. It took a long time to get there. But I was thinking about the lyrics, and I was thinking about what does bohemian rhapsody mean last night when I was listening to the song. So I did a little searching. In the back of our minds. So here is here's the thing. This song came out in one thousand nine hundred seventy five and when it came out it was five minutes and fifty seconds and just like stairway to happen. Which was how long Danny over seven. Music stations never wanted to play songs this long. So what they did is they had it play in the UK. And sat and had all these teas is going to be amazing song. This can be this going to be that. But they never allow them. They displayed little teases until the the music audience said can we hear the whole song came we? And so they heard it. And then it just it was released at Christmas time. And so it was the first song in the UK release at Christmas time that went number one. And it took never made number one in the US when it was released and in it was something that had been playing around her knew all the words in that song came out. We were like, oh, we got to know. All these words, even if we don't know what we're seeing right in the sun was. Accompanied by a promotional video which was genius and very ahead of its time. It was groundbreaking, and it was seven years before MTV video even was launched idea was that I wonder. Maybe will. But the name of the the song bohemian rhapsody has something to do with. What was going on at Freddie mercury's life at the time. He he quote said the song is just a fantasy. I think people should just listen to it. Don't think too much about the words, you know, just make up their own mind. What it says to them? It didn't just come out of thin air. He did research on it. There's words in it that I never knew what they meant. I didn't always kind of reminded me just in the not like in how the music sounded. But for how how it went on? And all the lyrics of American pie. It is lack because it's this rock stories. It always kind of. And I love that time when you loved dad's tying all of words that we do. We'll just I'm gonna tell you a couple more things about it. So the lyrics what was going on in, Freddie, mercury's? Everyone is interpreted what it means to your ties with Sal. There's all these things so many covers have been done of the song and everything but during this time period, this one woman named Susan blah. Blah said this is her interpretation is that Freddie, Mercury in nineteen seventy five was at a personal turning point in his own life. He had been living with this woman. Mary Mary Austin Mary's important for seven years, but it just embarked on his first love affair with a man. And he was an emotional state of mind. You know, how is this going to go and living with Mary mama Mia is a tribute to mother Mary and wanting to break free, mama Mia, mama Mia, mama Mia. Let me go and a kind of people Assad is kind of a coming out for him. And but coming out had grave. Right, right. Yeah. Because of the sodomy laws at the time and people you couldn't be gay, right? And so when you listen to the lyrics Donnie, play the second one the second one..

"You're listening to Catholic Baltimore on talkradio. Six AD WCBS. Welcome back to Catholic Baltimore. I'm follow Brian Nolan and we're talking with Michael Diaz, Kansas. He's the pastor of seat and Saint Clement and the topic for today is engaging in the spiritual battle. We are as the secular world is celebrating Halloween. We celebrate as a hallows eve on EBay of All Saints day. But there is in the air the talk about angels and demons and the supernatural can you speak about spiritual dangers about things that Catholics. Christians should be aware of the topic of Halloween is interesting because Christians some disagree on how to handle it. Can it be fun thing? Is it a dangerous thing? One way of looking at it. You have Halloween. I also. Number. I also remember second. Perspective on Halloween. You think of hell spooky things on All Saints? You think the saints in heaven and also you think of purgatory. So I think if you have it in that context on Halloween, you almost kind of sticking your tongue out at the devil little bit that we're not afraid of no ghost because we know that the power of good triumphs that all things under God's dominion. So, but the devil Israel and use spooky he has power. We speak of him as an angel pure spirit. Does number body the bible talks about in the first book of Genesis, it talks about the devil. Is the snake in the garden who tempts eve to turn away from God? And disobey the book of revelations speaks of the devil himself disobeying God at the end of the bible that he was an angel in heaven, but then he chose to disobey God his name Lucifer, and so one of the archangels Michael cast amount of heaven but in doing so we're encouraged because we see the good angels are stronger than the fallen angels. But the devils real he's an evil. And he has other angels who worked with him become commonly. They call them demons. Would you say would be some to the aware of so people weren't dabbling things like the occult could be common in the day that could open yourself up to two darkness and evil. So just as we believe that when we prayed a good angels or saints or God things happen. Good things. If you call upon spirits, bad things will happen. It's all real. So you don't fool with evil. If you pray indiscriminately or you seek to tap into the supernatural with the spiritual world without doing it the way Jesus told us, you may find some spirits, you wish you hadn't profound evil spirits. So we do be careful not to dabble in superstitious practices that are in Christian because we could invite those teams into our life, and sometimes even dramatically into our soul. Can you give some examples of things just stay away from and to make sure children stay away from them? Right. So anything that's ambiguous in the spiritual realm today. Very. Common. You see more and more pollen readers or fortunetellers opening up shop for business. Don't go. There. Not even as you may think it's a joke. But you don't know the person who's doing your opening your soul making yourself vulnerable to a complete stranger, and they'd be very bad intentioned. Children even games that tie into the supernatural. You think of boards even on TV? You see people who are mediums who are trying to connect with the dead and contact the dead. But not in the way, the told us Paul soul, the king of Israel tried to do that. And was condemned for doing that, it's actually a sinful act. You're exposing yourself to evil influence of evil. And even if it's in the name of good, that's sometimes it could be someone trying to contact lost loved one. But the commitments say we don't contact the dead, and that we're not that you can't speak to your loved one. But this idea of using the medium is spiritually dangerous that idea that you can speak with your obviously lift up prayers for the one who has died. Other times the Lord allow someone from the Lord comfort, you that can happen of cases of that. Then idea of being careful of dabbling in the coq violates the first commandment shalt not have full Scott's before me that we put everything under God, we we seek seek the spiritual realm the league that's the that's important to religion people don't like organized religion people today. Religion is an organized way of trying to connect with the spiritual. If you try to find your own way, you get in you may find some evil spirits and invite them into your life. About just the understanding. Sometimes we think about the we stereotype the devil. How would you explain the stereotypes and really earner standing of the fallen angels. But I think you can be disturbed on to extremes one that he's kind of cute and funny, and we don't take them. Seriously. We caricature him even people who dabble in satanism because they think it's curious for fun. And they don't realize how for and dangerous he can be. So we cannot take him seriously enough on the other side, we can give him too much credit in too much taller. We can feel hopeless in his presence. We can feel that he's influencing the world for evil, and we don't have hope that things will turn out. Well, scripture tells us Jesus showed us that God has more power that the devil is a creature to give us created by God is an angel who chose disobeyed God. But God has also been power over him as the creator, even though he does give him a certain realm of influence in the world. There's an author who wrote a book, he's an exorcist over in Italy. His name is father Livio fans ago. He wrote a book called the deceiver was Roman Catholic books and the publisher in the year two thousand and this is what he wrote about the devil. He said hidden behind the wickedness of the flesh and the full slates of the worldly, fair vanities, the untiring versus adversary of God. And the enemy of man works. He's a Satan's not a visible enemy like the flesh of the world. But he's very real his shrewdness consistent hiding himself in this way. Achieves the greatest success your ability to discover him in the innumerable situations of life where he hides to set traps for you. It's interesting. The idea of traps for temptations is an image that Saint John Bosco saw especially he would he would. He would see the traps that were set up for the young men that he was he was serving in the orphanage can you speak about the mystery of temptation and the trap set by even one. So the devil is miserable. Ultimately because he can't go to have any can't have that full joy. But as we say misery loves company, so he wants to destroy other soles to bring them to hell with him, which is permanent separation from God. And so he does does he traps us to commit serious sins where we reject God. Mortal sin, in Catholic theology is a syndicate kills our relationship with God. It's so serious that it forces the Holy Spirit out of our soul. If we die without the Holy Spirit in our soul. Not in a state of grace. We'll good hell so that's the devils goal. And so to take him seriously to recognize temptations arise to call them out as temptations and incense even to rebuke them can be very healthy to rebuke him say. God. I I asked you to be in my presence to protect me from the evil. One pray that I have earlier we talked about the three kinds of persons, divine persons, human persons, angelic persons. So I call upon all three rooms, they say, Jesus, Mary and Michael. Jesus was a divine Percy, Mary his human person, and Michael the archangel whose angelic person interesting. Called upon all the forces of good in the universe to protect us from evil the devil afraid of Mary Austin areas statues depict stepping on the head of the snake crushing the snake, which is a symbol of the devil devil's afraid of Mary because she never send. There was no effective. Senator he couldn't touch her and that frustration. He wants to destroy him in things there was one human being who never sent. And as such. She was full of God's grace of the Holy Spirit. And so the devil shrinks be forgotten the goodness in the power of God. And that Mary raw Jesus to the world. She brought to us historically. And in our theology. We believe she continues to bring us to God to Jesus so Mary his interacting in human history and the interaction of the devil. I think it's fascinating. That idea of what is the devil afraid of? Why was Jesus Christ one full victory? Right. He conquered sin and Satan. So there's something powerful not something the name of Jesus. Is powerful. Mary who never said no to God. She has great power. But one of the things that he's afraid of remember someone reminded me is that he fears humility, here's here's the repentance center because someone who comes humble before the Lord like I can do a lot with humility can you speak to that a little bit Saint Peter says to the humble God's grace. You have to believe you need help you have to innocent beg for God's open. He will give you grace. The Holy Spirit will fill your soul, which will give you strength to chew good into avoidable. When you face temptation will give you the strength to resist it this, fundamental, Senate, the devil. We believe as Lucifer is. He implied refused to obey God. Even the governor's his creator. God was all good. He did not want to obey. So it was a sin of disobedience and he seeks to foster their pride in us raise Mary as you said was completely humble Lord. Let it be done to me. According to your will. And if we can foster that attitude in ourselves, then we'll be full of grace as well. Just as a reminder that every one of us isn't a spiritual battle with a three enemies the Fleischer full in nature the world, if not all the world with the phone of the world and the devil one that reminded that not everything's the devil. But the reality is don't underestimate the devil. But on the flip side over-estimate him as well because we have the power of God. And ultimately, his grace last thing. Also, the know is encourage you to pray. The guardian angel prayer every day if you don't know it you should look it up and maybe teach your children the angel of God. Is we pray angel of God, my guardian dear.

"Intersection of race and class were essential in this early movement because the urban environmental problems that were being addressed by these activists, primarily impacted people of color individuals in poverty, working classes and other oppressed. Yeah. And then she she points out a few women who were really instrumental as pioneers of ecosystem environmental Justice, women such as Mary Austin, Jane Addams, Mary McDowell Emma, Goldman Roche Neiderman, crystal Eastman, and Eita wells, Barnett and Genia hope and these were activists and advocates for women's rights and environmental concerns of marginalized people. But this is kind of more social movement stuff anti industrialisation that we see in the nineteenth century. And we often don't think that this has like much of a connection with our contemporary understanding of ego feminism, but it really does it does. Yeah. And also even in the. Beginnings of the whole thing. You know, given the fact that women with for the longest potted loans time in history and still all the ones that have to take care of children race children. It kind of makes sense that they will also the ones who had kind of this long-term perspective of what world do I want my child to live in you know, and the protection of the environment is a part of that. And this is something that later on. I think we will get into that is something that effeminate criticized for full again, kind of portraying women as the ones who like the takers of the moment. And also this kind of essential of women as being closer to nature. But I think you could also look at it from the perspective of. Not a reproduction. It's not a reproduction of essentially a DEA. But it's a fact of life that women have to it will all given that role in project fight. So it makes sense that they have this perspective. Yeah. If we tie this back to our discussion of sex positive feminism where what what is the goal of summit ISM, and it is to in some ways expose patriarchy, but also take it apart. Hopefully, hopefully. Yeah. And understand the ways that social structures. Like continually reproduces oppression of women of people of oppress classes. To to look at how the environment fits into that. And how women are, you know, often times in a position to be able to speak to that, particularly when it comes to, you know. Seeing how urban is Asian how industrialization impacts their families. Yeah. I mean that that's one way to look at it. It's also, you know, famine is in in some ways, I don't wanna say anti-capitalist, but it exposes the potential pitfalls of capitalism and way that it can if left without a conscience, it can destroy the environment and the world around us. I will talk a bit about the capitalist aspect Theron. But yeah, just decide. So the echo feminism. We know today emerged from the sixties and seventies alongside the anti-nuclear proliferation movement and the beginnings of green political activism, and I I would say that a lot of the green party movements that we see in political activism in the sixties really emerge out of sixty eight or movement, particularly in Europe. That's not to say that there isn't a lot of environmentalism going on prior to that. But really I would say politically the green parties have their roots in this kind of sixty eight or movement so happy anniversary sixty eight hours. It's really difficult to describe define really one strain of EKO feminism, but the general concept of EKO feminism relates environmental damage and exploration to women's exploitation and lack of empowerment so in the article on bustle that I read and which will link to in the show notes they quote, Dr Mary Meller academic off. Author of the book semitism and a college. Who wrote the ecosystem is a movement that sees a connection between the exploitation and degradation of the natural world and the subordination and oppression of women. It emerged in the mid seventies alongside second with them in ISM and the green movement eco feminism brings together elements of the feminist and green movements while at the same time offering a challenge to both it takes from the green movement, a concern about the impact of human activities on the non human world.
