Race for No. 1 pick in 2020 NFL Draft: Joe Burrow to the Bengals becomes the trendy pick

"I just don't think that Joe burrow necessarily says the things that he said being a little wishy washy about committed the bangles before this and that all goes away because of the scouting combine his want to throw gasoline on the fire eight maybe he again maybe he wants to challenge we had Carson Palmer on the show radio row Superbowl week he said I was gonna get drafted number one overall people told me don't go to the bangles there losing organization I said I've got I'm good enough to change it there he said look looking back there was a youthful arrogance about me I thought I could change it I realized I learned I could not so perhaps Joe burrows in the same boat but perhaps Schober also is getting other information or other direction from his father his dad played professional football his dad played football in the CFL his dad has been a football dad it's distinctly possible is dad knowing the ins and out of an NFL career or a pro football career says you know what you don't want to go to the bangles and let's get you somewhere else which is exactly what Archie manning did so this is no slam against Bengals fans of this city of Cincinnati you know they're no worse or better this is no worse or better than many other cities in the NFL this is simply about can you trust the ownership namely Mike brown to support you to build a winner Joe burrow is the best quarterback in this draft by a long shot he's the best player because the numbers he put up last year he's also the best back because of two ways injury Joe burrow in a quarterback league is the best quarterback in this year's draft so you know he's got some leverage there and does he have faith that Mike brown who is renowned in the NFL as a cheapskate does he have the faith that Michael brown will do enough that we had to go on the show late last week and he absolutely was adamant that the idea the narrative that the Bengals don't wanna win is silly just look at the playoff berths that they made the playoffs seven times under Marvin Lewis and that if you make the playoffs that many times and you draft as well as they do which they do draft very well then you shouldn't be criticized for not trying to

Why won't NFL teams hire minority coaches?

"Three head. Coaching spots have been filled this week. But none of those. Three coaches were minorities while the Rooney rule has been followed. Some are beginning to believe that minority forty candidates are not being taken seriously for the open jobs and anonymous African American. NFL Assistant Coach said that the League has quote finally shown. It's not the place as for black men to advance. It's ridiculous it's disgusting. We can sell tickets and make plays but we can't lead Shannon. Why isn't the Rooney rule role working? Well I think until skip this diversity thing yeah. Diversity is a great great to talk about but until you get someone the leadership position that says you know what. I don't just want to talk about it. I want to be about it so until you get older ships that actually wants to put some substance to this and this is what that you're GonNa get now if the general manager there's one general manager that's what minority and that's CR- Chris greer in Miami. There's zero owners that are it shouldn't say minorities. I guess because shot con radically a minority. But when you get the gist of what I what. I'm trying to say until leadership gets more diverse. You're I'm not gonNA have a more diverse hiring background skills. This was puzzling to be. Is that Eric. Enemy has the exact Zac job that Matt Nagy had negative and call plays any recall. Please man they can get the job. Doug Peterson sedinko plays true. Recall to play around Rivera's on but Ron Rivera was not the defensive coordinator in Philly. He he became a D. coordinator what's he got to the D. Coordinator in Chicago. You are you in San Diego. Yeah but he got his getting these enter coaching tree. Eric B enemy has the exact same job. That Matt Nagy Doug Peterson has and he's not getting opportunity is spirit but this. I don't really think that they go into it. Unless you incentivize this. Okay if you how minorities kill we maybe you have an extra three to five five dollars and cap space. That's the only thing that resonates with these owners because I get it skipped if I spent three billion. Let's just say I spent three billion dollars for a restaurant run. You Go tell me what the hell I need to cook. Cook whatever I WanNa Cook it there. And that's how they look at it. Jerry Jones spent money for this. This this mind you oh tell me why should get killed but but this notion that Oh and they brought Muhiba Marvin Marvin Lewis. He brought him in to to do that. Situation wasted the same with the giants the giants they had irebi enemy. They what Joe Judge Chris Rashard Rashard. Excuse me Chris Restoring. Yeah so now. Now we're down to one. Vacant Cleveland Reunion. I'm talking about how good already know. Angle get no frills JAYCO network skill. He already interviewed there. So you would now now the take my name off the leader and solid rubber solid. Take my name off the list. Because he's GonNa get Mad Max two and a half years if you're lucky that seems to instead that's all Jimmy can stomach now if you look at it they keep these. You look at Mike Patton. You look at all the guys they've had and these guys have had I think. Hugh Jackson stayed the longest at two and a half years. But everybody's been two years the list huge only two and a half two and a half long but you get you get these other guys you get pretty kitchens and you look at patent and you look at a I forget. Just give all these one year jazz. WE ACHE AAC CLEVELAND. That in Cleveland of the North this skill ruining rules a joke. I get it. You know minorities Cadillac. An affirmative action thanksgiving. Yeah but in -firmative action. I guess it's federal dollars. You'RE NOT GONNA get the money if you don't do this. The NFL is a is a private entity. So what can you do. What Ki- what can you give? Nfl Do not the so. I have been tracking this for a long time because one of my best friends is John. Wooten who is now the retired leader of the Fritz Pollard. Alliance and he was the driving force behind instituting the Rooney rule as I hiring practice in the national shirow all league and John's point from the start was I just need interviews because if a young assistant coach gets interviewed a couple of times times it gets reported in his name gets out there and if another owner sees that name enough over maybe a couple of years hiring cycles else maybe an owner says chee that guy. He's getting a lot of interviews. Maybe I should bring in. Maybe I should be more open minded to him. But if you're GONNA curse because if I get a a lot of interviews and I'm not getting hired was wrong why here the me getting hired cave liability with that. But John's point in the end was I'd rather have interviews than not have interests. Okay okay so let's go back to the stat that I use last week. The Institute of Diversity and Ethics In sports twenty nine thousand nine racial and gender report card for the National Football Bali. The League got actually an a plus for hiring of color. Assistant coaches right a sit a plot. Oh that's progress right. It got a deep loss for hiring head coach of Color White eight-plus assistance d-plus head head coaches. There's a big disconnect there and it shows you. That owners are fine. Oh hire two or three black assistant fine with that but nope nope. I don't want to head coach to be black. Right gives quite to the restaurant you can cook. You'll be in the bank but Michelle not the bridge. I roll up now okay so when I texted back and forth last we can use this last week of John Wooten just beside himself now. He is devastated by this this development his point was that only one. GM Chris Grin Miami. Point out is use. John's word heartbreaking because it could start with the GM right a black GM of or of color could be more open minded to say to the owner. Hey listen this guy is really bring him in. Let me let me introduce him to you right. The conduit to the owner can be stronger. Iran have I don't know six or eight black. GM right right. We've had them around the league four or but all of a sudden there's a dearth to rape Barma with Barma within Cleveland. He'd Gone Rick Smith who I know very well be in Denver. He interviewed for The Washington. Ashington John Daniel Snyder said head coach could be a head coach. Basically general manager after the Washington like who are the head coaching after the draft. The General Mattis. Okay so sometimes there is group think or shink sheep among the owners because in the end they do want to win right. And if they're looking around the League league and that black head coaches really successful they say well I want one of those. I want to go that direction right well. There was one black head coach who started to have success late in the year ear and he happened to be allied with Chris. Clear in Miami and Brian Floors off the Patriots. Well they started out all time badge for about what seven seven games fifty. Nine seven opening renders and then they basically it felt like they turned the whole roster iside down which they needed to do and then all of a sudden the last nine games they go five and four they upset the eagles and then they went to foxborough and just basically ended the season. I thought for the new New England Patriots playoff teams right. Okay so all the sudden Brian floor floor with the help of Chris greer. They're having big success. It looks like it's headed in the right drug us us but it wasn't enough of a splash to create momentum through the hiring process and right because John Wooden again texted me back with so many names he said we have so many in the pipeline. Who already started with Eric? B Enemy and Chris Rock. I think Chris Shaw Bad Year on defense but when I watch him interviewed when I watch his body language. It's a stunt man he's he's got. CEO Written all over him. He looks like a commanding officer to me. There's not enough black head coaches skip. Because because you look you look at Mike McCarthy guest job he hires the guy that gave him his opportunity coordinator fifteen years ago so you see the circle. We'll skip once you become a head coach. What do you do you go to the combine? You go to say elbow you got your drake. He goes to the coaches meeting and Yada Yada Yada and to connect with the boom boom boom right right. So if I'm not in that Lou. How do I get into loops? Because a rid of staff they said eighty percent of the jobs are never posted so in other worth people get hired somebody a friend or family member is not what you know who you know There in live the roof. It does house so to finish John. Bruton's list of pipeline candidates being AMEE. Chris Rashard Robert Sala. He threw Jim Caldwell on his list. Is Jim Colwell was highly successful zestful. Jim called wheel lost his jaw. Going nine and seven in two years Matt Patricia has nine total win and he's still got a job now he goldwell still doesn't have another job he in four years. He went to the playoffs twice in the last year he went nine and seven and they said well you know we need to move in a different direction. uh-huh and the guy that's replaced has yet to win nine total games in two years. Do you still own a still on the clock. Okay Steve wilks got one shot in time. I'm one year in Arizona and he was gone. He's now the defensive coordinator in Cleveland which probably didn't help his cause this year that much but I don't hear his name no in Cleveland right right on the list. And then there's Terrel Austin who's young stripes potential star coach and John Wootton into his list with Marvin Lewis who he thinks deserves a second shy right. Okay so Jerry. Jones did observe in qualified for the Rooney rule by bringing in. I Marvin Lewis. I think Jerry was shrewd operating waiting there. Because he didn't pick a young like like Chris Rashard type interview him because of Jerry had interviewed a young potential upcoming head. Black coach right. There's more pressure on Jerry. What was wrong with right? What's the problem exactly? He went to Marvin Lewis because he thinks Marvin Lewis is kind of old news right right. He got his longtime time shot in Cincinnati. Listen I still think Marvin did a good job job seriously. Yes okay he went. Oh and seven in the playoffs but still it was Andy Dalton Alton you re you with covering the NFL and you remember what Cincinnati before. Marlene got there was John. Carter number one overall. You Got David Cleland with the fourth. The fourth picket. You got big day to day and Wilkerson purse around the second pick in the draft year after year after a year people. Forget what I know. Marvin didn't win a playoff game. But they weren't even getting close to the playoffs for Marvin got there. No so I was disappointed in Jerry because you know my heart Hartz. I'd love to see Jerry Jones higher black head coach and I think I probably won't live long enough or Jerry will live long enough to know.

Bengals A.J. Green suffers ankle injury, out 6-8 weeks

"AJ green he's gonna be out six to eight weeks if you do the math it was only July twenty nine two fingers were thinking that AJ green would only this for weeks he's got a low ankle injury they thought that he would be able to come back for week one plot they went to the MRI how did that work out not good torn ligaments in his left ankle so AJ green down for the count is expected to have surgery but maybe not right away because he's going to get a second opinion to confirm the original things doesn't trust bank of medical staff to see what see if you can find a different doctor he's not in today with the bangles and they're going to figure this out so if the time line is legitimately six to eight weeks that means that AJ green will not play in the basin gals season opener and likely will play the first few games after that either see my missed the first three games of the regular season I want to talk about this briefly so the question what does this injury do to the Cincinnati Bengals of twenty ninety well the answer is nothing all right the answer is no because Cincinnati was going to be a bottom of the barrel these shows as this this adds some fuel to the burning embers that is Cincinnati Bengals football they're going back to the dark ages all the pot shots the people like myself Marvin Lewis I'm tell you which you get all tastes the

You is impressive that he's had a job this long in the NFL. Okay. Like, he has to be a really nice. This question. More surprising. He's out of job. As long as Marvin Lewis has head coach of this new when he had it. Hugh Jackson in his head coaching career is eleven forty four. That's really good percentage in one that's two. Oh, three percentage. Yikes. Marvin Lewis as a head coach is one thirty one one twenty two and three. Please remove both of these men from my football team. I want no part of this at all Marvin Lewis stayed. I would say eight years too long in Cincinnati fight. It just take a stab at it. I would love to ask you can see what he would say. It'd be like. "Job openings this off season as well. The only one that surprised me was Marvin Lewis. I why Rio now's the time did the photos get burned did like the the Bengals somehow find a way to hack into the cloud and just. Either no backup. I mean. I'm watching a great show called the bodyguard on Netflix. I don't know much about espionage. But I know this people make copies are you? Sure. You got all of them has anyone drag DMZ sports in the last twenty four hours. That's a lot of. And there's some interesting jobs on that list. United buddy today. Trying to make the argument that the jet should go higher Adam gays, and my response was are you sure he's gonna bring Jay Cutler into the equation. I think he's an engine had a lot of these guys are going to get second chances. I really really hope Marvin Lewis is not one of them. Every other one of those guys I think you can make an argument on the line should get another chance. Marvin Lewis is not that guy. I'm not trying to dance on the grave of someone's career. But you go that long and failed to win a playoff game. It's long pastime that someone else got a shot number four. On saturday. The first two games of this year's college football playoffs took place. Number two, Clemson dominated number three Notre Dame thirty three in the combo in Dallas quarterback. Trevor Laurence do for three hundred and twenty seven yards and three touchdowns while the in defense held the Irish to only two hundred and forty eight yards of offense in the nightcap. Number one, Alabama beat number four Oklahoma forty five to thirty four in the Orange Bowl. Bama went out to a twenty eight to nothing lead in the second quarter. But the students were able to bounce back and make it a game in the fourth quarter to a tongue of completed twenty four of his twenty seven passes for three hundred and eighteen yards four touchdowns zero interceptions while Murray had four hundred seventeen total yards and three total touchdowns. This sets up another edition of Alabama versus Clemson this coming Monday night, look on doesn't take a genius to predict Alabama was gonna play. Clemson, stu. I'm sorry that I was right. You me and trace had a little bit of an argument on the air. I thought team is going to get crushed. And you guys did though right? Team back. I'm sorry that I was right. And you're wrong. "Yes. I think the story of the Marvin Lewis statue is being covered. Tongue-in-cheek perspective. I would like to think you're in charge of that. Greg shirts. Keep hearing her Marvin is the winning coach in Bengals history is going to be based on tenure, obviously. And actually the Bengals had some good years between maybe twenty ten in two thousand thirteen or fourteen. There was a stretch. There were only the patriots won more games than the Bengals. Now, they were going one and out the offs. I've mentioned that some friends of mine from out of town. You know, they don't pay much attention to the Bengals because they don't get a lot of attention because they don't do anything in the playoffs. What's it like being a Bengals fan is? Well, you know, what's actually the last four or five years, whatever it was only. The patriots have won more games than the Bengals. They didn't believe me. They looked it up. And it was true for a stretch there. They were ever in good shape. But again based on years at the helm. Marvin probably would have to be the losing coach because nobody is close to him in in tenure if you do just better than five hundred in a given year. That's a lot of losses when they add up over the span of sixteen years. So that's possible too. Good luck with a statuettes say, traffic, weather, and sports and all that coming our way. "You would have to think not only are we going to win a playoff game or two, but you probably going to get a Super Bowl appearance in there because coaches don't stick around that long. But this is a different team to West Point. And they're perfectly willing and capable and patient enough to a fault to stick around with Andy Dalton when other teams are urgently looking to upgrade it the most important position there is and they had one of the most talented rosters a couple of seasons ago. And you still can't win a playoff game. I don't know what more Marvin Lewis needed to do to not have this job. At this point. Here's a stat that neatly sums up your point. There are two coaches, and then fell history to go twelve years without a Super Bowl appearance and not be fire. Marvin Lewis, and Chuck knoll and it happened for Chuck no after he had that leeway of going winning four Super Bowls. Marvin Lewis had the leeway of raising the Titanic for what it's worth Marvin Lewis in his press conference today endorsed Hugh Jackson as his replacement. Here's what Lewis had to say. I think he's more than qualified. I think he's been in a couple of difficult situations, and you know, and that's tough and hasn't broke his way. But I think he's excellent football coach, he's a great, motivator and. You know, he's detailed. And and so I think he you know, he deserves an opportunity if not here somewhere else us o q Jackson if he got another job, you wouldn't think he could get another job anywhere else. But maybe Cincinnati's is again west the one operation that runs itself so differently that he Jackson impossibly gets another chance in the big chair. You have asked me many times on this podcast. If I feel sorry for Bengals fans if I'd take their feelings into consideration. I've never felt sorry for Bengals fans because I think they do it to themselves. If they hire Hugh Jackson, I will feel sorry angles fans did the the vibe it doesn't seem like they will they're interviewing Darrin Simmons. Their special teams coordinator Bill laser offense coordinator, they've asked to interview sacked sailor. Flu. Laser the big chair. I don't know just the way that Marvin Lewis was talking about it. I I think I don't know if Mike Brown is as big a fan of Hugh Jackson as Marvin Lewis, but can we spread a wider net than just simply the people already on the payroll. This is so Bengals that I wanna see it in their Rams quarterbacks. Coach Josh mcdaniels they requested. A can you? Go job. Josh mcdaniels would wanna take just hard. You don't do. It. Don't do it. I feel bad for the Cincinnati. And I don't think Hugh Jackson has earned that to be honest. I mean, come on the issue is not just the football accurate, and it was the personal experience. If you Jackson Cleveland hundred mile don't ever, sell it, Mark. Everyone knows there should be nineties. It just you Jackson gets another head coaching that it was a joke. Your free Mara. "Joining us now our ESPN NFL writer Kevin Siefert making a couple of minutes to talk some coaching carousel. Happy new year. Kevin appreciate the time. It's airing gold hammer and Emmett golden on ESPN radio. Okay. Thanks. Thanks for having me guys. Happy new year to you as well. Biggest surprise in the coaching carousel. So far Kevin has been what? You know, there have been so many rumors about so many guys. But to me like there have been so many years of rumors about Marvin Lewis in Cincinnati that I basically resigned myself to never believing in the rumors at the end of the year ever again until they actually did go ahead and make the change. And so I guess from that sense that was a surprise because we've been here so many times before over the years, and Marvin Lewis did a great job turning around the Bengals franchise. I think this generation of fans don't remember how bad the bungles used to be and for how long they were. And that he changed that. But it has held for years as though the the time of natural end of his time had come, but it didn't. And so that to me was the biggest prize they finally pulled the trigger there. So Kevin there's eight teams looking for coaches right now are they're eight good candidates available to fill these jobs. Yes. There are definitely eight good candidates. But not if everyone's pouring from the same cool, and that is. Really what's going to define this coaching carousel. The last time. There was this many. If you remember they it was two thousand thirteen I believe, and there was also eight and you had some college coaches get hired. I think that was the chip Kelly year, you also had a Canadian CF Elsie coach hired and now was Mark Trestman in Chicago. You know, we can judge whether that those situations worked out or not, and whether that was the fault of the coach or the franchise or a combination of both. But I think there's no doubt in this country. They're eight qualified candidates to be head coach NFL teams. But if everyone's just talking to the hot offense coordinator trying to recruit the offense coordinator, or they some of their trying to find the next Sean McVay and higher somebody's quarterbacks coach, and you go that route then that is going to result in some bad hires. But if they think outside the box, if they look at special teams coaches, if they look at some, you know, other college coaches. That might be have a good profile for the NFL. They can definitely all find good candidates. But not if they're all looking at the same small narrow group of people ESPN NFL writer, Kevin Seaford with us on the shell Pennzoil performance line. "Those were deplorable performances in some of the primetime games just were not prepared at any rate. That's now in the past and the Bengals are looking to move on from Marvin Lewis and a possible new head coach. And you know, there's some there's some questions and comments try and get to here. I love this. When curious how the players feel by Michael Myers in our live YouTube jet. That's that's interesting because yesterday I was thinking back. I don't know if you remember this or not. But there was a time in a believe it was gosh win was it. They were interviewing Giovanni Bernard. A couple of years ago. I believe it was last year. I can't really remember. It was one of those times where Marvin Lewis dot in extension came back. And they literally broke the news to Bernard on camera. And of course, he was cordial, and oh, really that's cool. Okay. Marvins back, but he wasn't overly jubilant at least not in a. In a moment that seemed to be pretty candid and surprising to him. So I'm I'm curious to know what the Bengals plans are if you're the Bengals players mindsets. Are if you remember also for those of you who follow on Twitter if you follow Carlos Dunlap on Twitter there were a couple of seasons. Especially in twenty believe it's twenty sixteen twenty seventeen. Now this this year, he couldn't really complain. Does. He got a big contract. But in twenty sixteen he put out some cryptic tweets that kinda questioned what the Bengals were doing in terms of free agency helping the team in all of that Marvin Lewis, obviously kinda one of the spearheads of what they were doing or weren't doing in those in those in those facets, so. I think for a lot of those players. I think they liked Marvin Lewis, you know, you saw at the end of twenty seventeen they didn't give up. They had some nice wins at the end of that year. They played hard even though they were decimated. They played hard against the Steelers in week seventeen this year that played hard against the chargers few weeks ago. They played you know, they didn't really give up on mar Louis. They wanted to play for him. But I think I think everybody is kinda like, well, maybe the Louis himself. Maybe it's just all around almost a sense of relief in saying, you know, at this is this is what needs to happen. I got this. Let's see I got this. It was a tweet to me basically asking do. I think that the next coach the Bengals will come. Will this be a Mike Brown higher? Will this be Katie Blackburn higher? Will it be kind of a group higher or or will it still be Mike Brown show? If you remember Mike Brown in a couple of interviews in recent years. He kind of said he's handed off the keys to a bunch of people including Louis, including Katie Blackburn, including Duke Tobin, and he's kind of sat back, and yeah, he's had some say, but he's let them take control. Now Marvin's out of the building. Due Tobin a guy who's been loud for his drafts. Recently is now sitting in it. We're looking at some high picks that have not panned out for the team. So, you know, I'm curious to I think that this will be a Mike Brown higher. I think that he's gonna kind of Sirte more power in. That's that's a little bit. What I'm afraid of with this move from Marvin I think, and I think that's really the only fear is is is not only I guess there's the fear of the unknown in potentially hiring someone that could bring the Bengals back into obscurity. There's also the issue of the bangles potentially a Mike Brown reasserting control and making decisions that are not beneficial to the team. So. And I think that that that might be where we we're headed..

"You after after dinner lots of things we used to after sex, right? Yes. And used to used to have to listen when I was a kid used to curb unload right before night before big event carbo load, just pasta pasta pasta. She's not good for you. No, no. That's like eating candy bars. You're just pounding it becomes sugar. That's time goes on. I think we figure out a lot of stuff not everything. But we figured out a little we do we do figure out a lot of stuff. Did you see Baker mayfield's act yesterday? Yes. Which think? The playing is fine. I just I don't understand that Hugh Jackson thing. I think that's the part that do don't kick a guy when he's down. I just I Baker will will regret it down the road. If you ever grows up just don't do it. The guy was fired. Don't tell another man that he shouldn't go work. He had a relationship in Cincinnati. Marvin Lewis friend of his right? That's what Doug you notice from from the coach and family you come from. They take care of each other coach, whatever you needed gig, whatever, you know, what I mean bagels. The only the Bengals are only organization dumb enough that if Marvin Lewis retired. They might give fight they might give Jackson the job who was a terrible head coach, Mike Brown. That's Mike brownies. Terrible own. Well, he just looked and I've talked to like in anywhere else. Marvin Lewis would have been fired after last year season. But it's it's Cincinnati Owen seven in the playoffs. I agree should've been fired us. Ago. You know? Well, look, I don't know if because of the play offs to me, ultimately you out to try to win a championship. That's what the goal should be. You are. But we forget they were Cleveland before they were they were Cleveland before Cleveland why puts before he got the job. But Sam Weiss they went to the Super Bowl with boomer size say no and the mega always they weren't. They weren't always bad. But then when Marvin took over they were cleaning, they were the laughing style. I get over the bungles. I get they were the bungles, but without getting kind of lost in that deal. Look the Baker thing it's pretty obvious that in addition to not being a good head coach. He didn't want Baker mayfield's number one overall pick. Right. Isn't that? What it feels like? I don't I don't know. Maybe I thought when they when they made the trade and did Hugh Jackson may Detroit for tyrod Taylor. Was that his it was at the GM and the organization, I'm sure it is. I'm sure it was the whole thing. And that happens obviously before the draft. Right. That's probably Hugh Jackson going. Hey, look, I got I got a win games to keep my job. And you get up a quarterback who had led the bills to the playoffs put him or the organization as well. When you get a rookie quarterback that franchise had won one game in two year. I'm with you and in steady, and if you ask him most, I would say you asked twenty eight twenty nine maybe thirty one teams they would have taken darnold. Over Baker Mayfield. No doubt about it. But Baker Mayfield has this Doritos bag of chips on his show. I get it. And he's like, look you didn't even want me. And then you wouldn't play me you and give me a chance to compete for the job. But you can't take personal like that. I mean, that's that's not the reality. Is he does and everyb- people? Everyone takes personal. But he's allowing us to see that. He's taking personal my my point is by by the outward reaction to Hugh Jackson. I just think it's disrespectful. I a grown, man. Don't do that. Correct. And an I think he's I think it's being. I agree with you. He shouldn't have said what he said about Hugh Jackson, take another job. I don't think he should take the shots or stare down the sideline on the other hand. I do think it all works in Cleveland. Oh, my do. I think it works for Cleveland. Cleveland is Cleveland is a town that the best athlete. They have ever produced has left them twice. I get it. "Next thing, you know, it's fourth and thirty for Indianapolis. It's fun to sort of observe all the games taking place at one time. I Lamar Jackson throw to somebody attempt to throw titan Mark Andrews, hit a defender in the back hawk the mar a thrower is still a work in progress. Yes, worker progress is putting it lightly. I mean, he just has to, you know, a lot of time with quarterbacks no matter how good or or, you know, whatever the scouting report says about you. We can't see you at your best until you're comfortable. And when I watch him throw the football when I watch him try to dissect defenses. I don't see a guy who feels comfortable yet. Which is why I think you've. Verse two running a lot because that's the thing that makes them feel the most confident so he asked to become comfortable as a passer, and then we can kind of make the determination of whether or not he has the ability of the thrower right on cue. I see him rush for about eight yards for the Baltimore Ravens him or Josh Allen. Who's been the more impressive runner to you. Because Allen's doing it on non design runs. Lamar. The design stuff. Yeah. I mean, I think they're both impressive. I think Josh Allen is just the one that surprises me more. I didn't expect him to be able to Russia the level. He is because he didn't Lamar Jackson had incredible Russian production. Yeah. We knew it. But not nearly what Lamar Jackson exactly we've got an update here. Coming up. We have an update from the Bengals do we have this. We have the update yet. I'll take it myself Joe mixing the Cincinnati bangles on fourth down plunges into the end zone. Hawk fourteen. Nothing to fight Marvin Lewis. Now that they're getting after man didn't after China China. Make a case here. Trying to make the case are the Bengals for I don't know maybe saving Marvin job like that. To write technically. But it doesn't look good five eight they are technically in hunt. But it's gonna take a lot of work. I guess like are they playing are. They playing to save Marvin job right now is that is that your interpretation of what's left in this season. It's a very good question. I'll have to take the break to to figure out. Okay. Good enough wants to talk about that later on throughout the show. We continue to see if they can lay it on the Oakland, Raiders, the raiders who've been frisky recently, not so frisky today. The Bengals are like you don't come to our house tried to play our game and win. Instead, you might lose her down fourteen to nothing. Did Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy deserve to get fired?

Did Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy deserve to get fired?

"Is not to say that Mike McCarthy didn't deserve to be a head. Coach is not to say that he did a terrible job because he did it. He's proven to be a good coach. And it may very well be that he deserves to be someplace else. I'm certainly not gonna sit up here and say that Mike McCarthy doesn't deserve to be a head coach in the league as long as Jason Garrett, and Marvin Lewis is still head coaches in the league, I'm not gonna do that. I'm not gonna do that. Especially Marvin Lewis. These Jason gave wanna play off game is more than I can say for Marvin Lewis hasn't wanna play off game sixteen years, Mike McCarthy's a Super Bowl champion. I think that ultimately the indictment against Mike McCarthy is very very simple, ladies and gentlemen. When you are coaching. Arguably the greatest talent we have ever seen at the quarterback position in NFL history. You gotta have more than one Super Bowl championship in more than one Super Bowl appearance to show for it. You have to have that Mike because he didn't have that. You can't have Arron Rogers questioning the play calling. You can't have him chagrined over the personnel. That surrounding him ask why that's the biggest defense that I have for Mike McCarthy. He he isn't the only one that needs to needed to go. I think I don't have any problem with Mark Murphy, the presidency yo for the Green Bay Packers going. I mean, you don't wanna had Ted Thompson up in there as a GM before you put. We assign them to consultants position. Brian Khuda Kint good a cancer. We don't know what he's capable of. He clearly wants to move into different direction and have his own guy. That's fair enough. But under Mike are under under a Murphy, you had a regime that did not respect ariza's enough. Didn't show him the courtesy and respect you deserve. You got rid of the quarterbacks. Coach alexan- pelt. You didn't even consult with Andrew with Rogers. How do you have a quarterback coach and not consult with Amer Rogers before letting him go? How do you do that? How do you do that? I remember one time I was told Aaron Rodgers walked into their office. They told him to get the hell out shut up. You play. We run organization. That's how this works really, really. I want to walk around here and act like you know, what Aaron Rodgers listen. He's not having a greatest year. Yeah. Absolutely. Right. He's not in that. Absolutely. Right. Eras is not having the greatest year. Nobody's gonna make that defense. He's not gonna make that defensible himself. He ain't blind. He could see understands, but we're talking about eras who will who will saunter who will cruise into the hall of fame first ballot without question. And gentlemen, Aaron Rodgers has twenty one touchdowns and just one interception on this season. And that's a down year for him. That's how lethal he is. That's how great he is. We are talking about a man with a career ninety eight and fifty five and one record. We are talking about a man, then it's completed sixty four point eight percent of his passes. First career. We are talking about a man that has done this at the frozen tundra lamb Lambeau Field for his career, and he is still passing over forty two thousand yards. We are talking about a man that's exceeded. What some would label top-five quarterback in NFL history who's passed over seventy thousand yards and Brett farve. And nobody would tell you that bradfo was better than that Rogers. That's how great Aaron Rodgers is. That's how great Aaron Rogers has been. And so guess what? If he's not feeling a coach, if he's not happy, or whatever the case may be you better pay attention.

"Don't run forever in the NFL sooner or later, they get hooked. Then ravens head coach. John Harbaugh was adamant in his defensive Jackson. Paul's out there running around. You can do. All right. Thrower. He's wrong. And kitchen throws a quarterback. All right. He's a quarterback. Questions with. So I don't. The question we will continue to see a Mark Jackson his AAC learner back. It was clear that that message was not just for Marvin Lewis. I mean, this is obviously a question that he's been answering or hearing comments about over a long period of time. And now he wants to address it. I don't even think he was looking to address that question. I think he woke up that morning. And he had decided he was going to do that. No matter what questions he was asked. If you see that whole footage the question he was asked was not even directly about Lamar Jackson the past. There was like is he going to pass more and he went on his diatribe. I think what he wanted to do right there within a message to his team and send a message to Lamar Jackson. I think John Haubert is one of the best coaches in the NFL, particularly at the inner locker room dynamics. And he's taking this opportunity to speak directly to his team. And let them know that he has their back, and I think Lamar Jackson as I mentioned earlier, I think he's going to be their quarterback in the for the foreseeable future. Clearly, he's the quarterback over the future. But does that future mean right now there's a team in playoff contention? You believe he keeps that job the rest of this year. I believe right now they are technically in the playoffs. Lamar Jackson keep that job for the rest of the season because I also agree with and while all of

Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield is giving the city a reason to believe

"To me. I don't think you need a offense of coach to get the best out of the Baker Mayfield. I believe you can get a great offense coordinator, I would go for the best coach because they got some good defense. Personnel to this just is valuable and has to be developed dislike the offense of town this division. Look at the coaches Cincinnati Marvin Lewis, what does he coach defensive? Okay, horrible. He's especially item. But he's a special teams coach and my Tomlin what's his specialty defense. So the defense of coaches have done well in that division, and it's a rough rugged division weather plays a part. So I don't believe that you just fall into the trap that. Oh, I got a higher offense of mine. Just because McVay Sam McVeigh's thirty to have we ever seen Sean McVay before maybe maybe Shanahan. Maybe the first shown him before Kyle his dad your member when he was that age. He was one of those bright young minds and everything, but shall McVeigh's just aren't out there running up and down the street. So I just think people are are looking at this wrong way thinking that all I gotta get an offense of coats for Baker Mayfield. I believe in Bruce Arians coaching ability, but I don't know of his style, and that stolen the ball down the field in this new NFL is the best thing for Baker Mayfield or a young quarterback trying to be successful in if they are going to go with an offense of coach all tell you a guy as far as getting the most out of that defense. I would look to his defensive coordinator. And that's guy thinks going to be bailable here in a few weeks. And that's Todd Bowles. I think if you are whomever whatever position you go with as far as the head coach offense of minded head coach defensive-minded head coach to coordinator on the opposite side of the ball becomes critical. Now, I don't know who the hot up and coming coordinators are I know the coordinators who could become head coaches are. But the guys were about ready to become coordinators on the offensive side. The Browns could hire

"Tell you why they on. Why they moved to six because the number five team or the New England Patriots. And I don't believe that Cincinnati can beat New England, even though they won their football game in a head to head matchup. I don't believe that Marvin Lewis will out coach. No, nobody believes right out choas Abella check and I don't believe Andy. Dalton will outplay Tom. I'm move New England to the fifth spot from the seven spot a week ago. Now, now, do you understand? I'm just so can I really why? Because the Packers lost and they were able to stay the same? Yes. But then. Yeah, they got punished for because they had to win. They had to come from behind win, but they what they did. In Atlanta teen you, Joe last-second throw. They did win number New England number five. Who's number four number four, Carolina Panthers catalog. Not. It moves from saying. On the bye week member. If you're on a buy week and keeshonds powering if you move up, I got them. Three. Doesn't matter. It does banner airliner is gonna fight New Orleans for that division. Petro officially confused. Can't doodo who's number three number three. We're gonna. Let him do this number three. Are the Chicago Bears at the number three spot the Chicago at number three, where were they land their stayed in. Move up on their mind, move up, stay right there stayed rice in tight. All right. Got to undefeated left to and one at number two. Now, this number two team was four week ago was the New Orleans Saints. The New Orleans Saints moved to the number two spot from four. And reason I put them there because their offense is rolling. Leisure has gotten a little bit better. So to me, then the number two team in all of the National Football League sitting at four and one. All right to me, which which number one. Yes, we tweet. In our Kansas City Chiefs. So hill, yes, it was not tucked in that way. So what you're saying that chiefs beat the patriots, then this week. So hope you pick them on the pics then because you were saying the patriots are headed the other teams because they can beat them all. So here's why I have tie the Rams the Rams office is explosive. Yes, the Kansas City's offenses explosive, correct. The Rams defense is vulnerable. Okay, so as Kansas City's defense more vulnerable, but yes, vulnerable doesn't matter in this whole statistic about the fourth quarter in their defense being great and all that. Miss me that the Rams defense is good in the fourth quarter, but because they've been ahead by so much so many against Seattle, they give up any points but so hands. So many times that they pin their ears back jokey muscle through. We'll see if he applies his power rankings to the picks, which will do an hour. This is my power rankings. I know you guys aren't happy, but that's. Confused. I'm just so, but he's not the top ten teams in the NFL. Got another fishery number eleven..

"They're gone for me too. I know they lost a tough one to patch Bohol's, but they had a lead in cushion. In the fourth quarter, they allowed a young quarterback with five starts under his belt to come and get them at home in a hostile environment. Yes, the referees, Buddha call probably call, but you don't leave as a coach would always tell me you don't need the game to the rouse. You don't leave the game in the hands of the referee. You just don't do it number five, Cincinnati. Bundles, Marvin Lewis, stanchion. He gets an extension man. He gets an extension. He has this team rolling at three and one right now to top division tie with Baltimore Ravens, whose he best even that division because you said that you don't buy the ravens the Bengals we've talked about not buying it, Steelers ravens loss to the Bengals so they would be the top of that division. I know they're at the top. But are they the best team in that. Is he still Pittsburgh. They showed a lot whatever they showed closing from behind to beat it Lanta in Atlanta last week, that said a lot I showed that they can get something done. I may be smoking crack or you. I hope not, but I feel are from Detroit. Browns are pretty good in that division. I know that one two in one, but when you look at their games, they're right there. They are all these games there. They run to the losses of only comeback combined six points or something, much improved football team, the line, what's the parcels line? You are what your record says. No, you. Not really are finding ways. Team, there's wanna buy weed, man. Last week. Of course, this team was number four, but they had a bad showing on Thursday night against the Rams Vikings were number four. Who do you got number for this time? Key Vikings are no longer around into top ten. Out the New Orleans Saints move from six to four, three and one football team. I, I like the saints. I like what they do at times..

"They can't do it again. It just in the success in the playoffs. They just don't have it probably for Marvin Lewis. That's it that this is probably. The make-or-break final season there for him. Having said that, though, they're never going to be bad enough to get to the top of the draft to get Andy Dalton replacement. So of any isn't the guy and here in New York with the jets, and I certainly have seven years in their play by play guy, many, many years. You live this, your quarterback, you know isn't good enough. I know you don't have a quarterback. That's good enough, but to get one. Exactly, right. Having said that they're always just good enough to knock on the door. The playoffs make it to the playoffs like how bad you actually have to suffer through and be to get to the top of the draft to get your hands on one of those quarterbacks and also by the way time at right this past year four quarterbacks taken in the top twelve all of those guys thought of as top of the draft quarterbacks look at next year's draft. There really aren't any quarterbacks that are thought of nearly as high as the guys from this season. There's a handful of quarterbacks, they're always will be. But this coming years crop of quarterbacks, you might not get a quarterback taken in the top ten this past year three taken in the top seven number one and number three, overall top of the draft. So you can get yourself into quarterback hell really fast in the NFL at it's really hard to get out of it once you're in it, it's just, you know, it's, it's a vicious cycle. And as an organization when you get stuck in that vicious cycle, sometimes you have to suffer through some really bad years to get out of it as we check in with Chris next here on ESPN radio. That'll Chris. Yes. Glad you took. My cough has been over the big fan of yours aid, but you have to that job a regulate your partner. Now, I don't know regularly. And if you ever been around real athlete and you get that one guy that everybody knows that done everybody else, he only has one addictive. He told us for years ago that he was tasting does not saying the to get the championships. He's taking the goes to win, win champships. I don't know. How could you come up with such a statement then he he would rather lose instead of win with another great player kinda read knits or is Colby Bryant. Kobe Bryant probably told him the same thing. He told sec, I need you to leave so I can submit my own legacy. Nobody wants to these people in this generation and he was to be Scottie Pippen no matter how many. Rains. We want with the Brun because he can never be better than the ball well and ask you this question when you say nobody wants to be Scottie Pippen. Nobody wants to be that number two guy or they all wanna be superstars on their own than explain the Golden State Warriors to me. Okay. I'm glad you and it's very easy. The Golden State Warriors have two teams. The first team that wants one, the first temps. If we re went down and Kevin love, wasn't there the ball with the one that tempt ship right then the second year when they went when all those games, three to one and the king average like forty points the game, the last four games and you keep talking about one big. "That he he said the only head coach he's seen there is marvin lewis john dorsey the general manager of the browns not there correct based on who's taking attendance at oklahoma pro decor act i don't understand that move while the move is again just maybe it's like don't don't pay attention or pay attention to what we're not doing because you can have baker mayfield in for a professional private workout anyway which is what most of these teams do what the top quarterbacks anyway so it's all smokescreen right now why show your hand if you don't have to show your hand signed carlos hyde make people think you're not taking saquon barkley so please call us at four th overall or call us at first overall you know somebody might take them i mean what are the giants gonna do and then what are the jets up to i i don't get it all right let me just walk you through the day yesterday all right so the jets lose out for kirk cousins and i i have said from here i think that's doing the jets of favor i don't think i think what the vikings did albeit giving him a lot of guaranteed dollars in making the highest annually paid quarterback all only for three years that to me was a smart play smart play i would love to know what the jets were willing to offer him because everything i heard yesterday from my compadres in the business.

"That is not normal and soul with cleveland let's far hue jackson's numeral a you're not getting one of the five to six best candidate on the market anywhere your cleveland so let's say you would have gotten the seventh best candidate is that as good as you jackson no by keeping huge jackson retaining him you were sending a message to the nfl this is what the bengals of smartly done they've kept marvin lewis the messages listen we got our coaches back so you know if they give you a job if let's say marvin lewis retires after this year and they hire anew coach that coach can call coordinators and say did they gave marvin lewis eleven years here aidid make the playoffs eight of them or whatever that's what you're trying to create in baltimore baltimore's they're getting rid ozzie new some they don't love flaco but they retain a sense of consistency the answer is not firing your coach the jets have been pretty smart with todd bowles you could run todd bowles out but but did the giants gave coughlin several years what the jets are saying is this were not looked at the mets could have fire terry collins eons ago they're like no we're not by the way the clippers smartly of retained doc rivers because when you're the number two team in a city matched to the yankees jets to the giants clippers to the lakers what you don't want to be is the second team in town and full of chaos a revolving door what you wanna be is okay we know our brand isn't the yankees the giants or the clippers but we're not a blank show here we're not we're not a clown show like we give our coaches are scouts are people plenty of time and i that's why i think keeping a doc rivers keeping a terry collins i think it's really important when you're the second team in a in a city i really think there's value to it here is a hollywood news.

"Best quarterback baby in the history of football was like no i got give here i got to give him away from my significant other and all this he's too good for this right he he force bella check to stop this is how handsome and how good jimmy garoppolo as he forced bella check this start looking at tom brady and to only look at him mike exerts did say it is it's true that's why i said as soon as he moved to california every guy who was thinking about marrying the woman he was with should have proposed because of jimmy is in the area long enough you see that it will cracked even what we thought was the best sturdiest foundation known to man mike i want to establish a line here it bill bellichik leaves the patriots hammadi teamed with light wood fire their current head coach i want to see where the line is he leaves the patriots after the season how many teams wood fired their head coach if it met they could get bill belgiu like let's do it this way did the steelers because i maintain every team in the nfl b side the bengals because they're happy with marvin lewis every team in the nfl fires their head coach to get bilbao jack even the pittsburgh steelers did the steelers get rid of mike tomlin if it means they can get built allogeneic or as soon as you said it i was like oh who wouldn't everyone just fire their coach at easy no it's not that look the steelers that one feels like the place that's like the the cincinnati bengals with reason like they hold onto coaches for a really long time there the differences their coaches have actually accomplish something during that time period that would merit them holding it out.

"The cold like you'd get frostbite would if tom brady's fingers get frostbite what are you going to do then it'll be though okay well marvin lewis signed a twoyear extension and i think it's fair to say that the bank goals and lewis will only go as far as any dalton will take them and it sounds like louis agrees with that we have to get back to being a vertical threat team we got to begin the football season being able to run the football uh and and that's got to be more consistent and we're going to do a great job of that that means we have to go into the offseason and we have to look at those things we have to be more physical every opportunity we can and uh so that we can you know control the football game that way and we have a an amazing group of threats it wide receiver and we've got a capitalize on then forget aguirre quarterback to be the guy that we expect him to be day in and day out it's funny cincinnati got a lot of heat for resigning marvin lewis and i would have resigned marvin lewis if you've lived a life of chaos stability is a wonderful thing in one doc rivers got at the clippers and marvin lewis got to the band goals they were chaotic tire fires and you may not think that the best coach but they created stability and i mean the clippers have had blake griffin and chris paul they've had dramatic players listen the bengals have had like six ten when seasons with andy dalton hand before marvin got there that was a mass so i mean not everybody wants a new head coach will i got news for you do you normally coaches the sec has gone through since sabin got their seventy five seventy percent of the coaches you hire and pro sport you fire marvel moore's is more than competent i know if cincinnati as marvin lewis here's what i know they're in games they're not embarrassing themselves and if you can find me a great coach okay but great coaches how many are out there by the way josh mcdaniel's going to have seven offers he's not going to choose.

"Uh no whitney merciless you you have some pieces there but that to me is a pretty attractive job because the dha shawn watson i got hopkins you know so i i have some things there in houston but there there's going to be a couple of your home the fact that the bengals now on i marvin lewis is not back next year i don't think he's back in cincinnati now he denied it but i don't think mormon lewis anc marvin lewis is moving onto his next challenge whatever that is more of a loose is moving onto his next challenge now you may have the browns trade huge jackson tooth panco's to be there next head coach what's the attractiveness of hue jackson's because he is great with quarterbacks with dalton and mccarron they both love working form reportedly dalton played really well with huge jackson um you know you might say well he didn't really help to sean kaiser here yes we gloveman he's great with aj green to uh basically like aged green whisper is what they say data green as it always run his route he's tends to improvise but you're going to fire a guy can't win a playoff game in hire a guy who can't win a regular season game and he later tracy why not trained for jay bruton if you're going to get a former quarter he was good young gruden was go there too but there's going to be some vacancies here john fox in chicago yes maglev do you think they hugh really is back in cleveland i know john dorsey the new gm said that i know but that's not just be said that doesn't mean and that's going to happen right i don't think you say it now because you want you want to get through the rest of the regular season that's all you know you don't want to be like hey i don't know if he's going to be back and then there's even more pressure mienies trying to win a game i think hugh jackson he any might not be a head coach he might be an offensive coordinator as as i've said there's so many of these guys the nfl's littered with these guys olives great coordinator gonna make a head coach know that it doesn't always work that way and maybe hue jackson's just a great often should coordinator and not a head coach but the bengals may trade ticket.

"So yes that's martinets marvin lewis you could tell he had spent a lot of time watching volunteers as for just here in the preseason giving you examples of instances were volunteers could've heard somebody could have could have a cost on their season could have made in a legal hit could have done something to get suspended but didn't which is nice and yes it's it's a coach defending his guy but but keeping keep in mind what marvin lewis's in the nfl and you might say well he's he's a guys but in cincinnati for now the going on fifteen years and has won a playoff game very very true but but he's a guy who's been making a living in the national football league for almost three decades he is a guy who is on the nfl's competition committee he is on the committee that helped craft the rules and yet he and the national football league can't agree on whether the hitting question was legal or not doesn't that illustrate a problem doesn't that illustrate the 'ambiguities excuse me the ambiguity involved here with so many of these roles doesn't that illustrate how much gray area there is with all of these things that not only shape how games uh get played and what the results are but now for the cincinnati bengals how long they may or may not be with without one of their best players first and last on espn radio on espn ammo egger filling in for my goal of junior like i i think this is a big issue the nfl faces right now in its it's become cliche for years a lot of his have wondered whats a catch can we defined what a catches can we simplify the the definition of of a catch can we simplify some of these rules can we can we pare down the rule book just a little bit so that when i'm watching the game my head doesn't start to hurt his i try to figure out what did i just see is the flag that was just throws was a justified is did did i just see someone break a rule or not how do you like i always view these things from the standpoint of when i was a kid my dad would explain the rules of sports to be you explain the rules a baseball explain the rules of football.
