I got to be with my feet are. So right now, my feet are planted right here. Yeah, and another high profile coach you had to take a layover in Washington before becoming a head coach is Marvin Lewis. He told ESPN's outside the lines today. I've said those words before, just like Eric said that I end the press conference. And when I left coach Billy and the ravens to go to Washington to be with coach spurrier, it was for another opportunity. It was a great opportunity for me to learn from another first time head coach in the National Football League, which was another thing that helped me. I was fortunate. "But and we'll explain more at the bottom of the hour China has announced plans to start easing some quarantine measures in both Shanghai and Beijing This after two months China also suffering a setback in its effort to Inca sweeping trade and security deal with ten Pacific island countries meanwhile the verbal protestations regarding the UN human rights report on Xinjiang are growing today And reports are that arrangements are being made for U.S. defense secretary Lloyd Austin to a meet with China's defense minister a white fang in shangri la dialog June 12th a Ukraine now this story just to up on the Bloomberg terminal Ukraine is now saying that satellite imagery improves that Russia is stealing grain from occupied regions as the war enters its fourth month in San Francisco I met Baxter This is Bloomberg Irish All right let's go back to our guests for the half hour Marvin Lewis senior global macro strategist at state street Marvin I want to get a sense of the predicament facing a lot of these central banks Now tell me how do you actually see them as they try and tackle inflation which perhaps monetary policy may not be the best tool to be using and also look at it from the what many have in their other remit is to have employment goals and indeed growth goals as well Yes I mean the dual mandate particularly particularly for the fed I think has been to a certain degree pushed aside with inflation being first and foremost All of the commentary and really the amount of time that monetary officials are spent talking about inflation really raises it as being the prominence problem that they're trying to face Obviously the UCB is limited to price stability as its remit so it's certainly needs to deal with an ironically it's behind the curve We're in situation we're dealing with inflation and I think this is why we've had a little bit of a relief rally in the transmission mechanism is questionable whether or not it can deal with inflation kind of given the set of circumstances we have now is something that really still is not clear There are initial signs that it's working and I think that that's creating a little bit of relief but the fact that the tools are so blunt I think is going to require them to really stay on the task and for a market that thinks that it might pull itself back in terms of being able to pause if you will I think it's premature to say that Until we actually see those inflation numbers starting to come in they're going to continue to sound hawkish and push forward I think because it's that big of a problem Well we've seen an impact a direct impact on the U.S. housing market to your point about transmission mechanism but I want to pivot very quickly to the story on China activity on the mainland has been we know depressed for months We've been dealing with a number of virus related lockdowns now it seems as though things are beginning to turn shift very very slightly and we were talking yesterday on the program about the stimulus plans that the local government in Shanghai is expecting to kind of put forward right now Are you willing to go long China or is it too soon I think it's too soon I think the one thing that we feel comfortable pointing to is that zero COVID remains one of the main policy actions that the government wants to ultimately hold on to And that's going to create these periods of rolling lockdowns and activity that drops comes back to the drops come back and clearly we're at a point now where the current version of the virus if you will is under control and some of the larger cities But this virus has been persnickety and it very well to come back in different ways Fortunately it's less severe for most people but having said that this kind of rolling lockdown is just going to make it a very difficult investment environment I think Well tell me here also Marvin with that inflation reading in Germany I mean 8.1% quite something This is a problem which is perhaps affecting Europe more than it is other parts of the world is could it be the case that well when Europe sneezes we all catch a cold now Yeah I mean I mean certainly certainly with growth slowing down because of this more aggressive approach from all the monetary authorities There's more risk of that But I think we're moving to the state to the stage of discussion where you've got a lot of idiosyncratic developments across these different economies The amount of wealth that's still sitting in the U.S. is probably still the.

"I'm seeing this stuff about. They're in the top ten. I'm seeing some power rankings. That they're closer to number twenty and instead of number ten they're all over the place in. I have no idea. How much should we take into account with the pittsburgh steelers. I mean when was the last time they stuck out loud. Come on now. You know the steelers this is this is one of the. Most stable consisted franchises and nola Pro sports you really expect them to follow to grade you really spectrum. The girl something ridiculous like five twelve or six and eleven or something like that. Well i don't know man number one again. They started last season. Eleven no before losing five of their last six. Is that a harbinger for something to come to continue ben rothlisberger. He started out pretty well but he very quickly faded down the stretch. He looked old. he'll beat up. He looked in mobile. He like peyton manning his last year with the denver broncos now roethlisberger's come back then near forty years old and tried to Improve on last season. Maybe he will. But i don't know and we're also speaking about seventeen games. I don't know you're going to be having rothlisburger. I mean how much responsibilities going gonna have with running game. That's going to be featuring naci is great but he's a rookie. I don't know and if you're going to be asking rothlisburger to have the responsibility of a number one franchisee league quarterback would she's been the last fifteen sixteen years of his career mobile as he is as prone to him getting injured. He's going to be doing that now. With a revamped offensive line. You're going to be asking to. I wouldn't say carey the offense but have a big responsibility in the success of the offense. No then then. Let's to throw in football power index projects that the steelers are going to face the second toughest schedule in football. I don't know it'll be interesting. It'll be interesting to watch. This wendell's world is sports. I'm your host wonder wallace so glad you could be with us speaking about week one of the nfl minnesota cincinnati. Two coaches need realistic. Success to keep their employment as head coaches of the team. Cincinnati rebuilding continues. You don't have been six years. Since cincinnati had a winning season. Everybody used to laugh at clown. Marvin lewis right. Oh yeah the guy never wins in the playoffs. Well to get see. Cincinnati bengals wanted to be more wretched one of the more cheap franchises over the past ten. Fifteen years i got them to the playoffs on consecutive basis. Been three years that they've won their season opener. Six years as i mentioned before that they've had a winning season and on sunday when they play against minnesota only seven of twenty. Two players who started last season are expected to be in the lineup again. Four this season started. Start the game. Nearly half of the players twenty to forty six. Su saw action in that finale of the twenty twenty season including a starters are not cincinnati's current fifty three men roster which means a man. I'm glad to see. Joe boroughs going to be back after that injury. He had against my washington football team but in the second year. What type of jumping g-gonna make. How big of a jump. Can he make to go ahead and get the bengals started on the wrong track again. They they lost..

"Because the bengals they have such patients marvin lewis spent many years. And you might say too many years cashing in equity from early during his time in cincinnati but that equity was substantial. They went from two wins. Two eight wins then. Held steady at eight wins then won eleven games that bought years of patients. Then there was. The season was the coach of the year. The reboot two thousand eleven season very good two thousand twelve season very good two thousand thirteen regular season. Great two thousand fourteen season. I thought marvin should've been the coach of the year. Two thousand fifteen season. They were great until all hell broke. Loose against pittsburgh. Zack taylor has not built up. Any win-loss equity look. Mike held onto day chal for four and a half seasons more than twenty five years ago. Dick lebeau get three years. Bruce coslet got a slice more than three full seasons. There's been some patients. There's been some patients with front office but by the way i'm looking at nfl power rankings. Week one on the nfl network. Cincinnati bengals thirtieth for this team to stop the conversation about duke and zach. It's going to have to defy. What a lot of people think including to a degree various. I think they're up to it. That's what the season is all about. Sixty nine five. It is remarkable. How healthy this team is going into week. One richard skinner. Our buddy from local twelve joins us every wednesday during the bengals season. Talk about that and much more next. I'd sports update service of kelsey. Chevrolet this show has. Those sports update is a service of kelsey chevrolet home of lifetime powertrain protection and guaranteed credit approval from their family to yours for life kelsey chef dot com reds and cubs again tonight. Cincinnati has a chance to actually win series. Which would be delightful if they could actually do that. Seven forty tonight. You'll hear the game live on seven hundred. Wwl w vladimir good eras gets the ball for cincinnati. Alec mills is gonna throw for chicago. Would you like a starting lineup. Of course you would hear it. Is jonathan india leads off. Wins and senator cast janas in right. Vodka was stock. Is farmer barnhart by the way that play. That kyle farmer made in the eighth inning. Last night was superb. and the quality. He has demonstrated defensively shortstop. This year has been an extraordinarily pleasant surprise. He's been very good relative to his amount of experience at that position. Coming in he's been very good barnhart sitting seven strokes and left batting eighth. My guy vlad is on the hill. Before i give you the reds wild card race hot take. Would you like to hear some david bell. Here's the reds manager from earlier today. Talking about among other things putting more attention on specifically who pitches the ninth inning. I see it the same way. I still see it as very important I always have. I think it's different. It's different than any other inning. There's no question. And i have known that under that before i became a manager because i know what it's like to compete in the ninth inning. I know that good players really bear down even more in the night I also think it can be over. I it can. We can overemphasize a baby possible but it is really really important. That yuan want on your best pitchers pitching in that situation. There's no question. I've always felt that way. I don't i think the only thing that changes is our personnel. You know what guys respond to different roles in different situations in the personnel of the other team that we're playing so it changes. I would say on a day to day. Basis but by overall believed simplicity on it hopefully evolve but for the most part of at stay pretty constant. Hi david bell chatting about the ninth inning role. Michael gibbons obviously through it last night seems well suited for reds. Come into play tied with the padres for the last wildcard spot. Here's this to me is simple. And i'll try to make it sound simple. I have maintained all season long. The by is going to be roughly ninety wants to make the postseason because the reds have slowed their pace the padres have slowed their pace the phillies have accelerated their pace but there pace was slow for most of the year and the cardinals are game. Above five hundred. I don't think it's gonna take ninety. Wins to get to the wildcard to to get to the postseason register. Seventy four and sixty six. I believe somewhat unscientific. Louis if you get to eighty eight wins. You're gonna feel pretty good at the very least. I believe starting to sound like lance. Now i believe if you're sitting there eight wins after game one. Sixty two at the very worst. You will play another baseball game. Maybe it's the national league wild card game. Maybe it's regular season game number one sixty three. I have a hard time believing with the way the racist shaped out that if you went. Ada games you're going to be completely on the outside looking in so for the reds that would mean they've got to finish fourteen and eight over the last twenty two games. Fourteen eight twenty two games remaining nine are against the pittsburgh pirates nine. That's a little bit less than forty five percent of their games remaining the rest of the season against the pittsburgh pirates if they go eight and one of those games which is completely doable. Eytan one in those games. They've gotta go six and seven against everybody else by the way the reds this year against the pittsburgh pirates chances are you know. They've played great against them. They've won nine out of ten if basically they can keep up the pace. They've outscored them. Eighty to twenty six this season the pittsburgh pirates have scored twenty six runs in ten games against the reds..

"Pick. Yeah second round and like something else. I think but yeah i mean he was already like one of the best backs in the league. By far. Right here was awesome. But he's just is pre Marvin lewis or marvin lewis got hired the year before maybe yeah and before Carson palmer must have come next year or this year is is pretty. The bengals actually becoming mediocre where they're mediocre forever. Yeah laura dylan was cincinnati from ninety seven to two thousand three and let's see six years cincinnati. Let let's just go through their their So for ninety seven they were seven and nine and then three and thirteen four and twelve four and twelve six and ten two and fourteen and two thousand. Three there were eight. Eight and eight was the first year with marvin lewis. But let's see the quarterbacks jeff blake neil donald the end of his career. Jeff blake again this achilles smith and then john kitten tough. Yeah and all he did was run for. Let's see eleven hundred eleven hundred twelve hundred four hundred thirteen hundred thirteen hundred than in two thousand and three around for five forty one and he got injured but there was some bad blood at the end of that doesn't like end of the run with the bengals. Which is why patients got gotta for cheap because he was you know quote unquote malcontents. And i'll try to find a quote. But i couldn't really find it anywhere. Mentions of it. But apparently and they mentioned the company has mentioned this game where the bengals offensive. Line basically told corey dillon. We don't wanna block for you. We'll wanna block or somebody else. Yeah which is crazy if he puts up all at reduction right stuff on like two and fourteen teams fucking like he is the offense we. We saw them in two thousand one. That was the first game we watch. Remember he crushed and he just it was just the coroner ellen show i think it was achilles smith pac ten and the gillies didn't do shit because all you had to do is hand off to corey dillon. And watch him run fair in four or five yards. A game for adult listened to that episode..

"As far as GM work owes our George Payton. We'll see how it works out that the Rockies seem like an organization right now that needs somebody in between the owner in the GM, they need a president of baseball operations. Somebody Jeff brightest reports to is a baseball guy. Yeah, that's what they need right more than anything. Yeah, I totally agree and they don't have that and I honestly you need to kind of clean house. You need a fresh set of eyes because the continuity of this other Rockies do things That doesn't matter if that's how they do things, they said, it's not working. How you doing Things isn't working. You've shown that for 20 something years, but that doesn't things like like you say that and I'm 100% with you. We also have to acknowledge what's more likely like I'm here with the same thing that people were saying for so long about John Elway, right? I'm like, Oh, you know he's gonna be fired or moved on. It's like when John Elway wants to step down, he's going to step down. It's not gonna be any other way you can. You can scream and pound the table. All you want and create hot, take articles and and do all that nonsense. And in the end, it's it's going to be a lot of hot air. The same thing applies to the Rockies. They've been doing it this way like Bill guy, that little guy. That was another perfect example of a guy that just failed visibly at his job constantly. And yet all they did was just repurpose them. They put into it the reassigned him instead of actually firing him in the organization. There's a vast difference there China. We took a franchise that was it the number three pick in the draft. It took him 25 straight F C West titles and two Super Bowls. Winning one. You're right, you know what most Iraqis has 20%. None of that resume and none of it. I'm saying what they do is an organization kick have that you can't keep doing the same thing and expect something different. They do. This is like the Cincinnati Bangles like It's exactly like that. Where they just Hey, we're just gonna keep going over Marvin Lewis. How many times did he fail? And they were like, Well, I don't want to lose a finger. Marvin Lewis got them to the playoffs. They just prices Wait. Assistant Lee. Sure. I mean, there was that one time right? Looks No, it's organizationally. It's like what they are, organizationally. They aren't going to make that change. They're not gonna make that change is certainly on for a second cell. That's not gonna happen. I don't know anything. Yeah, that's that's the thing that Z not gonna happen, but what you could do. As you could reorganize a bit structurally. And then you re insert a baseball riding baseball operations. Let them kind of run the show, and Jeff Bryant reports them and then you know if it ends up being the situation where that's just not a tenable situation, then you move on because You're right. What they're doing. It's it's not even close to working. And I hate the way you guys don't see it from that. I always I hate that. I hate that. I hate it when, when any franchise Says that well, you guys on the outside, Don't see what we're doing. No, we see it. We see it. We see the draft. We should resign and don't sign we see who you let get away. We see it. All right. If you missed it earlier we had your chance to win..

"His job, Dramatic, Grundy. It's D A's top story. He goes. It's your cold Open. Those two voices were to the guys hired that was Urban Meyer and Arthur Smith Smith again in Atlanta. Here's what we've learned about the NFL head coaching cycle. Is that right now? It is a value You have never been a head coach before. You look at all of the names that I just cited, and none of them have previous NFL head coaching experience, and only urban Meyer has significant head coaching experience. What you see is a theme here building and that is NFL G. M's and NFL owners are looking for The young, new fresh voice and Urban Meyer might be the biggest name, and he might not be young, but he absolutely is a fresh voice in the NFL. Here's what happened. The NFL. GM said the NFL owners have seen young head coaches first time head coach is specifically have success right away. And they have gone and double down on it. So if you are Marvin Lewis, if you are Jim Caldwell, if you are any of those reach tread coaches that have had experienced the NFL before. Need not apply. You're looking at a couple of guys in the NFL. That changed around the fortunes of their franchise is very quickly. And we're first year head coaches. And that has now colored everybody's decision making around the NFL. Brian Flores in Miami. Sean McDermott in Buffalo, Matt LeFlore in Green Bay. Heavens to fan ski. In Cleveland. These guys walked in and day one took a losing situation and made them winners. You could put Joe judge into this category because even though the Giants ended up six in 10, it was obvious how much the Giants changed. Because of their new head coach, and this is now what all of these owners are chasing. This is what all of these owners are trying to replicate. They don't want the guys that have been around before. They don't want the guys. You know what Mike McCarthy didn't help matters. McCarthy was one of the most decorated former coaches that were in the cycles the last two years, and his Cowboys didn't look like they benefited at all by having him at all. They look like they were worse for it. If you're a head coach, and you had head coaching experience before you are right now being pushed to the borders pushed the boundaries. When I look at the hires around the NFL, I also see again a heavy reliance on offense, and that's to be expected. You are looking at a heavy reliance on offense when it comes to Arthur Smith. When it comes to Hoping that you can get that quarterback to the next level that next coordinator but this year more than others. It's less about offense or defense. It's Maura about young guy coming. Be the Wiz kid that celebrated Staley gets his job. That the Chargers were looking for the Sean McVeigh of defense and Staley had three years of the NFL and one year as a coordinator. The Jets are looking at Robert Sal and not to fix Sam Donaldson. But to change the culture off their organization in Detroit. Dan Campbell don't even have a specialty. Dan Campbell's not a coordinator. But damn cable's seen as potentially a leader, a leader of a locker room, a culture builder. Urban Meyer admits I'm not going to run myself ragged and practice. I'm gonna hire assistant coaches. And so urban Meyer is there whether we believe it or not to build a culture but not necessarily be in the muck. The weeds of the excess knows this is where this year's Coaching cycle took us The most curious part about all of this is Erik the enemy, not having a head coaching job. Because there were multiple openings he interviewed for all of them, essentially He is potentially a first year head coach, and he does have the offensive background. So that would seem to check a lot of boxes. Why isn't the enemy hired? It's beyond me. As the interview. Well, his agent says he does, although that's his agent. Is it because that people don't believe that he has control in that offense that anybody could do it? Well. Doug Peterson got a job out of that offense and that Maggie got a job out of the air out of that offense. Is it because Matt Maggie and Doug Peterson kind of showed that Andy Reid assistance might not have All that great of a track record. Maybe maybe those two guys hurt Eric, the enemy. Maybe they just don't believe that Eric, the enemy has whatever secret sauce is for the rest of these guys. You would hope it's not the color of his skin. But there's plenty of people in the NFL that air suggesting otherwise. But the fact is that if you followed the tea leaves the enemy checks all the boxes that I just mentioned of what's hot right now in the NFL and doesn't have the job. Now, maybe he gets one of the last two remaining. Maybe he gets the Eagles job. Maybe you get the Texans job. Who knows? But there's a couple of very obvious themes going on. And right now people want the quick fix that they see coming from the young culture changers that have happened the NFL the last couple of years. Pete 55 to 1 to four. "This is what you need to be a head coach in the NFL as a black court coach, African American coach, He's done it all and the only thing that's holding them back right now. Or at least was was the fact that they were so good. He couldn't get his interviews at the end of the day. Next year. If there is not the Corona virus, you can travel freely. Um I hope that they keep this in place, Bt On on Monday. Yes, Coach. Sorry. I gotta take off for you know, eight hours or 12 hours, however long it is. We'll take a private plane. Get me there. Get me back, and I'm not gonna miss my duties. I know I'm gonna, you know, double time work it, But you can't negate the opportunity for guys like Eric the enemy which, over the last couple years, it feels like it has been that goes without saying Then we'd have to leave the state. The team that is interesting conflict. I in their point, and you could meet on the tarmac. That's a great point. Any chopping up a 34 hours and get a sense of OK, There's somebody I want to take another step with and guest on being on an airplane for three or four hours. It's all concepts. You talk people, Um, you shake somebody's hand. You look him in the eye. You should have a sense of workable sense of. If this is something I want to pursue it like dating, do not even think of a better not even think about it That way. That's even easier. That's what I'm saying. It's not. It's not that hard. When you have money to put quarters in these things happen, and they do they know So you know, it's just Yeah. Listen, I have always been a proponent and I always will be of the best person getting the job. I mean, you know, I don't like nobody does when one of the proceed best people is not able to even enter the fray to get the job. I'm also very reluctant to say that the men have been hot who had been hired Or not, or not the right hires. I don't think that's fair either. I mean, I don't know You can't you know, I think they're actually mutually exclusive. I love Campbell. I love Arthur Smith. Obviously Rob Solossa minority and always Miami. If anybody nobody loves him more than me. I look like I love the guy. But there it zipay awful Look for the NFL. If McDaniels gets the Eagles job and insert whomever you want for the Texans, if it's not bowls, and it's not the enemy, and Marvin Lewis or somebody like that, I don't know. It's a white person Day ball since his days in the state stable for the bills, right? You've got 66 white men and one Arab Muslim Muslim American, and that goes against Everything that we've talked about for a long time. It's right. But again, I what the lines did. I love Campbell. Yeah, I love these hirings, but it's still not right. Be enemies got to be able to walk in on the dance floor and try to cut up the road for a couple of minutes. Somebody's gotta tap him on the shoulder and say, Come on your turn to dance. The guys. The guys I don't know. You know the problems the enemy got. It's so interesting because I'm watching that game And of course, of course, Andy Reid says. Fourth down, we're going forth That's given that's not worth the enemy, saying Andy Lowe. That's 100. What's 1000% read? But that play called I'd like to know the mechanism behind that call. And you know what if, and my heart's tells me that it's Andy Reid, Is there some collaboration? Yeah. Before the week. Hey, if we're here, what do you think? Yes, it's flush through clearly. But if the enemy made that call, which I don't think he did, But if he did, Andy Reid needs to say that Agreed. He needs to say that by the way, I think you're right. It is still Arab American, even though he's Muslim. Okay. Still Air American. Okay, But yeah, I got you. I got you. So we'll see. Uh, nice mid cycle course correction by the NFL could be too little too late, But you'll see. Maybe they enact this or they implement this for forever moving forward a sticky brought up, Which would be a pretty good idea. All right, let's get the update for Mac will come back inbounds out of bounds carry Irving stuff at the top of the hour Acts update Right now, here's rich. See me, Yes. Sports flag and guys. He did take her to the blight on for seven times. Well, let us do a quick comparison. Tom Coughlin's some colossal, almost the exact same resume two Super Bowls. Uh, I probably don't need to say more than that. Yeah, The other thing is Marvin Lewis should have been Let go after the Pittsburgh agreed. I complain. And I agree with you. Yes. And it was always my hope that you are. We would move to the front office and Leslie Frazier would get the head coaching job. I thought he would have been a natural fit with his defense of mindset. And I believe when he was a defensive coordinators, they were a top five events almost every year that he was a defensive coordinator for the Bangles. Yeah, I would have to look that up, but you might be in the ballpark on that. And the other thing. Woz Primetime games hanging, Marvin, you got Marvin on a Sunday afternoon at one o'clock and dangle stadium. He was money in prime time. What was he to in 19, I believe is what his record was brutal. S O. If you in a nutshell, if you can't beat if you don't beat the Steelers you don't want in prime time and you can't win playoff games. It is amazing to think he lasted 16 years. Yeah, I was hoping the Bangles last time with higher Eric Eric, the enemy. On. The only thing that saved Zach Taylor's job was, he warned, I think if he'd lost out these last games, I think Mike Brown would have let him go. And it was my hope that they would get Eric the enemy, but we will. We will live with what we got. He's gonna get another year and hopefully that will turn the Bangles around. Let's hope so. Tim. Thanks, buddy. All right. Good here for me. Here's the Here's how I would rank him. This is a 10 Bangles, coaches and history. The franchise If you're asking me to rank their coaches, one through 10 Go one Paul Brown. I cheat a little in this because I give him my son. Cheating is true. He brought the NFL here. Hey, coach, the youngest expansion team to ever win a pro sports title. When they won the A F. C central in 1970. They were in their third year of existence. He coached them to a division title in their third year after starting from scratch. He was named the NFL coach of the year for his efforts. His teams made the postseason three times in his eight seasons. They want to division titles he coached in a narrow just four playoff spots in each conference. Keep in mind. Um, he did not have a losing season in his final four seasons. Once he is kind of established the organization as a new NFL organization did not have a losing season. In his final four, he went 36 20 with two playoff appearances in his final four seasons. In his final season, he went in 11 and three That remains the best winning percentage in franchise history for a season. Hey, gets credit. Major credit for building the organization from the ground up. Paul Brown, number one number two. Forrest Gregg came to Cincinnati and 19 eighties and no nonsense disciplinarian led the Bangles of their first Super Bowl appearance in his second season. Coach the Bengals four seasons. I know you could make. The argument was only four seasons. How do you rate him that high? Well, it's my ranking. Hey, compiled the best winning percentage in franchise history. 5 57 best winning percentage in franchise history. And then if you remember despite having a year left on his contract left after the 83 season to go to Green Bay, where he was a legend and replaced Bart Starr's head coach. Um, his four years stay is four years shorter than any other candidate in my top four. I can see that, but the discipline he instilled His overall winning record and the fact he took them to their first Super Bowl in team history carries enough wait for me to put him number two on this franchise list. Number three. Sam wife. Former Bengals quarterback replaced Greg's coach, animated emotional known for his cutting edge innovation and unconventional play. Play calling took the Bangles to their second Super Bowl. Three years later, he was out..

I like tracking things anniversary wise of things that happened on this date a little bit later on. We'll do our official on this date with the sounder to make it official. But there is one moment that happened on this date, I think is at least worthy of conversation for maybe a segment or two or certainly Ah, Phone caller to It was this date 2000 and three But the Bengals hired Marvin Lewis. Marvin left. Two years ago. With time comes perspective. And and I hear this conversation a lot from people. The way you viewed Marvin then compared to the way you view, Marvin. Now, I would be curious if And if so, how your perspective on Marvin has changed. In the two years since he's been gone, I went back and looked at the peace that marked her nude route the day that Marvin was hired this state 18 years ago. And he wrote Marvin Lewis introduced Tuesday night at a resort hotel. Here it was that the Senior Bowl as the ninth Bengals head coach promised to bring a blue collar work ethic and discipline to a struggling team and organization. He wrote later in that piece, linebacker Takeo Spikes one of the Bengals top stars, will be a free agent when his contract expires in March. He said he respects Louis, but it's skeptical that one person alone can change the atmosphere surrounding the team. Spike said. It's like having a cold. You treat the symptoms not trying to cure it. Other candidates interviewed for the job or Steelers offensive coordinator Mike Malarkey, Jacksonville coach Tom Coughlin and Bangles assistant coaches Mark Duffner and Jim Anderson. This state 18 years ago. Went back and looked at Geoff Hobson's book on this date in Bangles history, and there I was struck by a couple of notes about this hiring on this date, the first outsider ever hired. To be the head coach of the Bengals. He was the ninth head coach hired at the time. Uh, Mike Brown saying that day quote. This is a sea change for us. He's new. He's fresh. He's got that kind of presence. We're looking for where this forward. This team is now he is the face of our franchise for the future. Artrell Hawkins Bengal at the time, Corner, said quote. This was a big move. Here We are the laughing stock of the league and we get a coach who is what a Super Bowl and been a coach on successful teams. Jeff writes Jeff Hobson. It's believed the decision came down to the wire today. Just after the afternoon practice after Steelers offensive coordinator Mike Malarkey had delivered a strong interview last night. Former Jacksonville head coach Tom Coughlin reportedly took his name out of the running last week when his plans included too many massive changes if he were to be hired. But Mike Brown saying quote it came down to all three guys. Marvin was the right guy for where we are. Quote from Jon Kitna the day Marvin was hired. He was one of the three guys we were talking to. He was the best show of the three guys that were talking to he was the best choice. Guys were worried that coach Coughlin might come in with too much of an iron fist. But everyone is aware of Coach Lewis and what he's done with his defense since 1997 Guys in our locker room are going to respect him right away. 18 years ago today. Marvin Lewis was hired. Remember the news conference? Charly Luken gave him the key to the city. Marvel was being healed by some is the black Jesus at that point I looked it up today. The Bangles winning percentage in the history. The franchise 53 years of football. The Bengals winning percentage. Is 4 48. Marvin's winning percentage when he was here in the regular season was 5 18. How much is your opinion of Marvin Lewis changed. In two years time since he left. That's question one Question, too. I remember. I remember talking about this. Two years ago. Fact I did a twitter question I pull. I found the pole. We discussed Marvin's place in franchise history. There are now nine coaches in the history of this French or 10. Coaches include exact 10 in the history of this franchise. Where would you put Marvin Lewis in that list?.

"They probably chuckles to himself and has great clarity. Much like Marvin Lewis, who isn't 77 but brings clarity and presence, and the situation needs clarity and present soon. Yeah, I think a lot of most of the situations this year other than probably probably the Eagles. That one just needs. I don't know. Better communication, but the Jets. They need a leader and they need direction. Same thing with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Same thing with the Houston Texans. Um, Detroit is well, most of them need that, like they need someone to be a leader, not someone who is a Great play caller, or, you know, as as this great mind for for defensive schemes and can confuse you as a you know, as an offense, you don't need that guy. For most of these openings this year, you need Bonified leaders. And it's why some of the re treads. I think this season in particular simply because of the jobs that are open. Are are going to get a weightier look other than the guy like Rob Salah, who has a such amazing story, and when you realize where his His knowledge and leadership comes from. It's compelling right it makes you want to, you know, follow it and believe in him where his last year say, For instance, the New York Giants, they needed it right. They needed bad, maybe the leadership in a bad way, and Joe Judge ended up being that guy. He's I think he's the perfect guy there. It's always interesting at this point when head coaching jobs are available, and you look at the circumstances and you look at the situations and you're like who's gonna perfectly fit. At the end of the day. You just need someone who can lead and get people to believe in them. And that's hard to find that I think we want to give it credit, too. Yeah, No, I got you well said, um, Well, what a crazy right it's been for the city of Houston between the baseball cheating scandal. Between James James Harden is gonna get shipped out whether it's today tonight. Tomorrow. He's book it gone on. And, you know, I mean to show Watson who I don't think is dealt. But you thought about your story Your cornerstone in the NBA. One of the great players one of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL on a team that was revered throughout baseball for drafting and developing and do it The right way out too vain Spring urine, Caray and all these young god, But you know all these studs. And then all of a sudden, just, you know, cheating Scandal after cheating scandal, not just the Whether it's the buzzer or the trash can, But you know the tack If I'd stuffed with spin rate everywhere you looked there was there was cheating claims from all around baseball Levy toward the Astros. What a crazy year. I know it has used in sports, not even your hand. That's not even bringing up the Garret Cold stuff, which recently has come out, Which is why he's on the Yankee doesn't cheat, he said. Well, now it doesn't because he's on the Yankees. But what he was accused. Yeah, some clubhouse attendants were helping. I saw that. Help me get some cripple the cold weather grip grip. Grip. I hear you on By the way, I heard Stephen A say this today. I haven't seen it anywhere else. But I actually heard him say this that Guess he got a text from from somebody that said that the Rams would be amenable to trading Jared Goff and picks to the Texans for Dish or Watson. Now the reason why that's interesting. It's interesting there answer to play homes right now. That's why it's interesting that nobody's going to sit here and say that the show Watson is in Infinitely better than Jared Goff. He's infinitely better, no doubt off script on script, he just better. But what the Rams could provide to the Texans would be an infusion of draft equity. Which the Texans don't have. We forgot. We've mentioned that yesterday. But, you know, as you run down the litany of missteps here with the Texans, you're probably insert that toward the top of the resume, No first or second round pick either, although now you gotta figure because the Rams also sent pics to the Jaguars. In the jail and Ramsey trade, So I don't know if it would be immediate and he didn't clarify. You know, I think he actually got the text during the segment, so he was just kind of processing it quick, But I don't know. I mean, as you hear that quickly on on the most rudimentary level gender gap in picks for this whole lot sounds it sounds implausible, but Because they just they pay Jared Golf. The money swap would be very, very difficult because of the penalties of moving both of those guys. Independently. You know what I mean? So you move a guy just because when you traded guys just like cutting him And so so unless you trade him post June, which is defeats the purpose, and in a sense, you're taking a big kid on your cap. So both of Rams and the Texans are gonna take big hits on their caps to swap quarterbacks and then other assets is well, it's It's just impossible. Maybe they figure out a way to do it. But Might you ask me on first blush? It feels implausible. I got you figured out. Throw it at you all right, well,.

"I haven't heard anything, and I don't know if that's intentional or not, but it's starting to get to the point where you kind of yes, start making assumptions, right. Maybe he's really good at his job and would be a great head coach. He just doesn't interview well, because that's what people are looking for when they have that interview for the next head coach, or maybe have a coordinator. Way. Hear these stories about like Brandon Staley, friends and sues Now, you know, jump to the You know the hot list for coordinators defensive coordinators of the Los Angeles Rams. They could potentially be head coaches he interviewed phenomenally, and that's how we got the job after being a linebackers coach under Vic Fangio, and so sometimes just interview well doesn't necessarily mean you're gonna be a great head coach. But just because you don't interview will doesn't mean you're not going to be a great head coach, So I can't figure out the answer with Eric the enemy and I don't want to make assumptions about it. But you just it's it's largely silent. Around. You know his processes over time, and it's been a lot of them has been great for years. At this point, he's 51 years old. I know if you wanna be coaches, it's time to get cooking. I know took Vic Fangio a long time to get there, but that was because he's a defensive person. Yep, The league was skewed a bit. Um, you know, it's It's very strange. What's happening here now? Um, uh, I mean, I I really hope that that we're not the situation where Where the seven openings You know and not listen, I am I have always been a proponent of The best person gets the job. Yeah, agreed. The issue of the setup of the NFL is that the decision makers Are in large part white and you know, you usually reach out to somebody that you're familiar with much like and this is not a knock. But if the G M's were mostly black, you'd probably see Ah lot more black coaches just, you know, not trust necessarily, but connection or get familiarity. Is there a chance? I know Marvel Lewis's is in the mix year gold. Well, it could be recycled. Maybe Todd Bowles is starting to look again. Do you think there's a chance and by the way for the record, Rob Scylla is a minority. Nobody says that, but he's a minority. Do you believe that there's a chance that seven openings come and go without a minority, excluding robs a lot for a moment that there's not an African American person high above coach hired for this cycle? I can't see that happening simply because a guy like Marvin Lewis fits so many boxes for so many different teams, whether it's a team that need to rebuild like the like the Jets or the or the Lions. He's too good of a choice for teams like that in these experiences, not like he's gonna learn and make the steaks and, you know, set the organization farther back. But for some of these first time coordinators who are looking to become head coaches like therapy Enemy or Rob Salah, I could see those guys getting shut out. But I don't think that you think that you say you think Rob Salah could get you know I could see them getting shut out simply because Because a lot of the openings bt have a lot of work to be done. Um I'm trying to think if there's an easy like if there's if there's one of these openings. It's just like easy like you just got to come in, and I think charges pretty easy. Yeah, probably. Yeah. Yeah, I think I think I think you're right with that cause they have They have a set defense. It's some studs on that side of the ball He's gonna find. I mean, they've been unlucky. They gotta stay healthy. Uh, you know, on the defensive side of the ball, but they have and they gotta win tight games. Exact brother, probably Anthony Linda's record..

"Progressive insurance. Be sure to tell your smart speaker to play ESPN these other jobs. Is there another established name as a head coach, someone who was already been a head coach. That is going to get one of these other jobs, so I'm not gonna guarantee he gets one. But Marvin Lewis, I'm told had a very strong interview with the Lions that they walked away very impressed with the process with him. And that was an interesting fit because he knows how to handle dysfunction. Right? Cincinnati. He actually won games at a place that doesn't usually do it. Detroit needs some of that. At the very least, they should pick his brain like Hey, how did you do that? And how could he do that? You know? S so that's that's a name that I'm following. But there's it's not the same years last year, where Ron Rivera Became clearly the guy in Washington before the regular season was even over and then Mike McCarthy was clearly going to get one of the jobs. It's just not The same set up like a Jim Caldwell. I don't think is going to get one. A few others. There's a GM like Rick Smith. It was with the Houston Texans, I think has a good chance of Detroit. Maybe a few others. But it's gonna be Mix of up and comers and, you know, established guys like you are wild cards like Urban Meyer. It's not a strong about classes. It was last year. Coaching wise if you call the Jaguars, the best job available with the number one pick. With all of their cap room, and you assume that urban Meyer's going to go there. For me. The second best job is the Jets, and I know that there has been the knock on ownership and those kind of concerns before But when you have somebody who's been Has respected around the league is Joe Douglas. You have the amount of draft picks plus Cap room. They have Jeremy. I look at all that and I mean, I hate to say it. Hard to screw that up. It's New York man, New York They attack that media is brutal. I mean, you see it, like Adam Gates went seven and we're not that bad. You're not that bad. Just a bunch of swell folks trying to root on their team quietly, right? But Adam Gates went seven and nine last year wasn't told disaster in this year, he went in on the complete hot seat. Adam gazes, terrible this stuff. It's just a hard place. You take a lot of bullets. Um Would go Chargers, too. Justin Herbert proven commodity. Number two pick in the draft, not a proven commodity yet. And they already have a lot of pieces in place that are better than your draft picks. You know you got Joey Bosa. You've got a lot of pass rushers. You know, you need some pieces, but those I mean those receivers and Herbert Air in and out every week. I mean, I would want to go there. I think that's why they're In the mix and wire. Urban Meyer would strongly consider them if they were to get their money up. Up next. We've got so much more on super wild card weekend. We're going to set the table for Sunday's games, and we will keep you updated on the Washington Tampa game right now. Three. So what's gonna happen next week is anyone's guess. So. Stay tuned for the governor about 25 minutes. Also later on is a congressman. Bread wind strip. Also later on is the great number 85 Tim McGee, But until then, Mo Eggar as the first captain 21, Welcome to the Bill Cunningham Show in Mo. How are you? I'm great, Willie. Happy New Year I'm honored. Honored and I'll tell you what Well this morning. A big announcement was made by the Bangles that Zach Taylor is coming back and the 32 games He's coached the Bangles have one. I think a total of six out of 32 games. Watching the game yesterday it appeared the Bangles were completely overmatched, completely overmatched. Going forward. You have to get into the head of Mike Brown and Katie Brown. What do you think was the reason that the general manager and the ownership of the Bangles decided to keep a coach who had won six of 32 games? What is the reason kind of you have to funnel and you have to tunnel through the minds of Mike and Katie Brown? And they're good people. Let's face the good people. I'm not sure about football wise, but they're good people. Why do you think the Bangles manage? Management decided to keep sack Taylor know, based on everything I've come to understand about Mike Brown and the way he operates in the way the family operates loyalty to drives a lot of decisions, whether they should or not, And in many respects that's really, really good. In this respect, I don't know. In the past, it hasn't worked out. They were exceedingly loyal to Dave Shula. They were exceedingly loyal to Marvin Lewis, Um, being exceedingly well to Marvin Lewis in 2010 paid off five consecutive playoff appearances. They've been exceedingly loyal to their own players. You know, you look at this year's team they brought back a J. Green probably shouldn't have brought back Gino Atkins on a contract A couple of years ago. A lot of people questions Brought back Carlos Dunlap on the contract. A couple of years ago. There's been a lot of people questioned. It blew up in their face, but like it or not fair or not, you and I both know, um, loyalty is a very admirable trait, but it guide's decisions for this franchise. And often times it should not. And then the other thing is, if there were any doubts going into that Pittsburgh game As to whether or not Jack Taylor was going to come back as cathartic as it was for Bangles Sands to experience that win as much as that night at Paul Brown Stadium felt like an exorcist, Um, because the Bangles bullied the Steelers, which never happened if there were any doubts about Zac Taylor's future in 2021, But I think that victory threw cold water all over all those doubts and all but confirmed the news that was That we found out today. But Look at the statement of Mike Brown quote. We remain bullish on the foundation. Zach is building I look forward to next year, giving our fans that want results Real one, Mike Brown said. Also, many clubs had all kinds of injury problems, and the Bangles certainly were not exempt from that. They lost their best running back. Maybe their best offensive lineman. Their best defensive linemen were traded hand or did not play up to expectations. Their best wide receiver didn't catch a ball yesterday. And so the foundation is being built. And I'd like to know what is the foundation? What is the plan going forward? And the answers were hell, no. And I want this team to be successful. You want them to be successful? You want your daughter grew up in a city in which the Bangles are acting like is the 19 seventies and eighties again, it was there always winning Division championships going to the Super Bowl a couple time not quite getting there, but the excitement was palpable. And so what do you tell your young daughter? She sits on your lap watching a Bangles game. She's what 45 years old. What will her future look like? Is a bangle stand throughout the 21st century 3.5. She's not quite there. Um, she had no interest in watching the game with me yesterday, which, frankly, I can't blame her because it was awful. So so there's a lot there. The foundation is Joe Borough, you know that. I know that. I think that if there's any reason for optimism with this franchise, it's it's number nine. It's Jo Bro, but you talked about the statement that like Brown released today. My problem with the statement is the first sentence in which he says two years ago, our fans wanted Blank, blank blank right. He points the finger at fans. Don't think fans wanted Jack Taylor. I think what fans wanted was a thorough process in which they turned over every stone in which they had no preconceived notions in mind as to what the prototype for a head coach should be. Didn't care if it was an offensive guy. Defensive guy. Special teams guy old Young experienced from college from the pros. Been a head coach before been a play caller before instead what it felt like is that whoever the next head coach of the Bangles was going to be. You had to check some boxes, right? OK, we want an offensive guy who's young and somebody who's had lunch with Sean McVeigh before. And that letter. Zach Taylor. Zach may be a very good NFL head coaches. Winning percentage right now is worse than Daschle is in huge actions and human Oh, in 16 and one season, but The problem for me, is it him or necessarily even retaining him? It's pointing the finger at the public that did one changed two years ago. We did. The whole operation had been stale under Marvin Lewis, but I didn't want a shortsighted. Frankly lazy process and the way itself Woz. Okay. Aw, offensive guy. Marvin's a defensive guy. We're going to go younger. Marvin's older Everybody wants the next vomit bag. Well, that Taylor works for some Nick. They were all I hear is that Taylor did it feel to you like it was a process to go and get the best in the world at what they do. No, it felt like they were checking boxes. And once all the boxes were checked, it felt like we got Zac Taylor. Mike Brown statement today basically pointed the finger advance. It's essentially more eloquent way of saying, Hey, look, people, this is what you wanted. So what you wanted? This is what you got to shut up and deal with it. We got to fax to stand out to me. The Bangles finished one in five in the F C North. They're outscored by almost 100 points. 1 73 to 80. And with Joe Burrow at the helm, they were a 25 and one What Joe? Borrow, not at the helm. There were two and five So basically the quarterback is important. But maybe not That important. A complete Reed. You must occur. Wide receiver, defensive line linebackers Joe Mixon. God knows. He's hey, had a fabulous last year signed that big deal didn't play the last half of the season. So going forward what excitement is available to us in August and September? Assuming the Bangles can have fans? We're gonna talk to Mike DeWine on that in about 15 minutes in the stands, assuming that's going to occur, What is the excitement looking forward to 2021? You and I both know how this is gonna work, Willie. Hello. Hello, Working. We're gonna load up on this. Go ahead. You and I both know how this is gonna work. Willie. First thinking completely rationally is if of course, they're going to ban him for the nature of his, uh, social media, which you could make the argument for, um It sets a bar that they would have to ban an awful lot of other people as well from that, and that is something that I don't think they're willing to do, whether it's the right thing to do or not something the they're not. Willing to do it also, then would would ask for this. This criterion of was he banned while he was president because he couldn't cite. Will. The similar things happened? It's one point I mean, my initials thinking would be do you wait to see what the content is. From the some things never change. I say politics is never going to change. I just I'd like to think so. I want to talk about our kids, and I think I'm not. I'm not real hopeful. Okay, So I'm gonna take you back and in Bengal land, right? No, not to what 1990 the last because we just celebrated right. Three different 30 years. Just say well, yes, celebrated the 30 years ago, There was a playoff when think about that for a minute. If you're 29 years old. You've never seen a Bangles playoff victory. Think about that, anyway. So go back to one. The Bangles were horrific People weren't showing up home, and I don't mean this year. Um and remember in Marvin we trust they brought in. I still see the billboards. Just the face of Marvin Lewis. He spent 16 long years here standing in a playoff win, but nonetheless, So now reports are he's being interviewed by the New York Jets. I thought he got the gig today announced earlier that he got I don't think you got. I thought they said that he got it. Really Don't hang on fact check when he was interviewed. Please do because I wanna make sure we're factually correct. But he interviewed a Dallas There were reports that that he was being interviewed it that he was with her med words on the staff at Arizona State after he left the Bangles. But I don't a man, but but okay? Yeah, You're right. You know, he's just interview, but But here's what I would tell you. The one thing I'll tell you about my book, and I thought Marvin Lewis over his tenure outstayed his welcome here by I don't know, six or seven years, but but I will tell you this. He did take the franchise. And lifted to a degree. I just felt like he could never get to the next level where you can't get much lower than the Jets. I mean, they're horrific, but you gotta love his For years. We gotta love his inspiration, his ambition where he'll be measured on very little. Hell, yeah, we'll be paid a handsome saving A lot of money is what I would tell you. If it's not Marvin Lewis. It's some other re tread. Rumors are that urban Meyer may go to Jacksonville tired of spending time with his family, apparently slow, but nobody here But you know what? Jackson has got a ton of money under the cap. They were horrible, but they've got some good young players and you know what I can at least to say Urban Meyer has been accomplished, significant winner granted at the college level, but he has been Look, I think he's down. And so anyway, how many? How many coaches have been given the bully now? 78 already and it starts. Everything started immediately. But it just goes. All it does is they just It's like a big just draw. The arrows draw mine, but people with better performances on the last couple years are gone. Attacks back. Our boy is back. Well in look at with the job Burrow seal of approval, right? Well, we talked about Sunday's game this past Sunday because Again. Yet the perfect storm horrific stealer First half Bangles came out with attitude held on to win on Monday night, a rare victory over Pittsburgh. Then they went on the road finally got Zac Taylor a road win at Houston horrific defense by boat, but the Bangles pulled it out with essentially a third string quarterback. But now we got the barometer Baltimore needed to win. Let's see how the Bangles farewell. I mean, they were that was men and boys like men and boys have never been except for the first time they played Baltimore, but that was that was what you expected. So I guess it brought me remember. We asked the question. Half full half empty and most people were saying I'm not buying in and after you watch Sunday, how could you well that that trick has been played here in and Europe winning games that don't matter. At the end of the year when teams are either you know, injury laden or not playing their starters or whatever. I mean, like you said Baltimore had to win that game and they were coming off of the Over. Nonsense. Still looking boulders. All right, well, they're playing well, now, let me ask you the situation. The one that everybody was talking about in the NFL was the Sunday night game where basically the Giants beat Dallas. And they needed Philadelphia at home to beat Washington. And then the Giants would go right. But if Washington won, they would go and basically dug. Pearson, who's a few years removed from leading the Eagles of the Super Bowl, essentially for lack of a better way to say through the game tanked in a tank it I mean, took out jail in herds put in a quarterback who hadn't thrown a pass all year and the eagle players were even unaware. So a lot of people somewhere worked up. Giants coach Joe Judge talked about integrity, the game this and that did that bother you that Doug Peterson did that, And it's so while there's lots of different reasons why people player don't play correct level that they're capable of. I mean, I felt like the Steelers against Brown should have put The starters and at least for the first half to put one full game together where they were back in rhythm, But they didn't They arrested guys like this. So the bright you could say the same thing in face. So why did you know? I mean on the Browns Got, you know, got bin because that happened and I'm not saying the Steelers let them into the playoffs. You know, just to try to knock him out this week is a damn near had a chance to tie late and said overtime. You do what you do for different reasons. His was pretty transparent. As the what was going on, But I guess I look at it like this. He's in charge of the Philadelphia Eagles. I mean to Joe Judge of the Giants. I would say Look, Joe doing another game shouldn't be up to that. It shouldn't be I what I liked was that Russell Wilson, who were other great talking, Why did they? Why did they run a play when they could've just kneel?.

"J. Brooks your one man huddle Washington Football team and Philly tonight on Sunday Night football. It's really simple Boys and girls Washington winds and they're in the playoffs is the NFC East Division champs. But if they were to lose, today's Giants Cowboys winner would go on to represent the division. Alex Smith is expected to start tonight a quarterback, but he will be tested in pregame warm ups just to make sure that that calf is holding up and head coach Ron Rivera says it's stunning loss just in case the team. Doesn't make the playoffs, looking this a blown opportunity. Nobody expected us to have this opportunity to me. You get to where you are. That's success, no matter how we look at it. That success Now, If this was three years down the line I'd be I'd be disappointed if we didn't make it. But right now I'm ecstatic about where we are. I am I'm fired up about a running back Antonio Gibson with that, too, and wide receiver tear McLaren. That ankle are expected to also start tonight against the Philadelphia football team. Race for No. 1 pick in 2020 NFL Draft: Joe Burrow to the Bengals becomes the trendy pick
"I just don't think that Joe burrow necessarily says the things that he said being a little wishy washy about committed the bangles before this and that all goes away because of the scouting combine his want to throw gasoline on the fire eight maybe he again maybe he wants to challenge we had Carson Palmer on the show radio row Superbowl week he said I was gonna get drafted number one overall people told me don't go to the bangles there losing organization I said I've got I'm good enough to change it there he said look looking back there was a youthful arrogance about me I thought I could change it I realized I learned I could not so perhaps Joe burrows in the same boat but perhaps Schober also is getting other information or other direction from his father his dad played professional football his dad played football in the CFL his dad has been a football dad it's distinctly possible is dad knowing the ins and out of an NFL career or a pro football career says you know what you don't want to go to the bangles and let's get you somewhere else which is exactly what Archie manning did so this is no slam against Bengals fans of this city of Cincinnati you know they're no worse or better this is no worse or better than many other cities in the NFL this is simply about can you trust the ownership namely Mike brown to support you to build a winner Joe burrow is the best quarterback in this draft by a long shot he's the best player because the numbers he put up last year he's also the best back because of two ways injury Joe burrow in a quarterback league is the best quarterback in this year's draft so you know he's got some leverage there and does he have faith that Mike brown who is renowned in the NFL as a cheapskate does he have the faith that Michael brown will do enough that we had to go on the show late last week and he absolutely was adamant that the idea the narrative that the Bengals don't wanna win is silly just look at the playoff berths that they made the playoffs seven times under Marvin Lewis and that if you make the playoffs that many times and you draft as well as they do which they do draft very well then you shouldn't be criticized for not trying to

Skip and Shannon: Undisputed
Why won't NFL teams hire minority coaches?
"Three head. Coaching spots have been filled this week. But none of those. Three coaches were minorities while the Rooney rule has been followed. Some are beginning to believe that minority forty candidates are not being taken seriously for the open jobs and anonymous African American. NFL Assistant Coach said that the League has quote finally shown. It's not the place as for black men to advance. It's ridiculous it's disgusting. We can sell tickets and make plays but we can't lead Shannon. Why isn't the Rooney rule role working? Well I think until skip this diversity thing yeah. Diversity is a great great to talk about but until you get someone the leadership position that says you know what. I don't just want to talk about it. I want to be about it so until you get older ships that actually wants to put some substance to this and this is what that you're GonNa get now if the general manager there's one general manager that's what minority and that's CR- Chris greer in Miami. There's zero owners that are it shouldn't say minorities. I guess because shot con radically a minority. But when you get the gist of what I what. I'm trying to say until leadership gets more diverse. You're I'm not gonNA have a more diverse hiring background skills. This was puzzling to be. Is that Eric. Enemy has the exact Zac job that Matt Nagy had negative and call plays any recall. Please man they can get the job. Doug Peterson sedinko plays true. Recall to play around Rivera's on but Ron Rivera was not the defensive coordinator in Philly. He he became a D. coordinator what's he got to the D. Coordinator in Chicago. You are you in San Diego. Yeah but he got his getting these enter coaching tree. Eric B enemy has the exact same job. That Matt Nagy Doug Peterson has and he's not getting opportunity is spirit but this. I don't really think that they go into it. Unless you incentivize this. Okay if you how minorities kill we maybe you have an extra three to five five dollars and cap space. That's the only thing that resonates with these owners because I get it skipped if I spent three billion. Let's just say I spent three billion dollars for a restaurant run. You Go tell me what the hell I need to cook. Cook whatever I WanNa Cook it there. And that's how they look at it. Jerry Jones spent money for this. This this mind you oh tell me why should get killed but but this notion that Oh and they brought Muhiba Marvin Marvin Lewis. He brought him in to to do that. Situation wasted the same with the giants the giants they had irebi enemy. They what Joe Judge Chris Rashard Rashard. Excuse me Chris Restoring. Yeah so now. Now we're down to one. Vacant Cleveland Reunion. I'm talking about how good already know. Angle get no frills JAYCO network skill. He already interviewed there. So you would now now the take my name off the leader and solid rubber solid. Take my name off the list. Because he's GonNa get Mad Max two and a half years if you're lucky that seems to instead that's all Jimmy can stomach now if you look at it they keep these. You look at Mike Patton. You look at all the guys they've had and these guys have had I think. Hugh Jackson stayed the longest at two and a half years. But everybody's been two years the list huge only two and a half two and a half long but you get you get these other guys you get pretty kitchens and you look at patent and you look at a I forget. Just give all these one year jazz. WE ACHE AAC CLEVELAND. That in Cleveland of the North this skill ruining rules a joke. I get it. You know minorities Cadillac. An affirmative action thanksgiving. Yeah but in -firmative action. I guess it's federal dollars. You'RE NOT GONNA get the money if you don't do this. The NFL is a is a private entity. So what can you do. What Ki- what can you give? Nfl Do not the so. I have been tracking this for a long time because one of my best friends is John. Wooten who is now the retired leader of the Fritz Pollard. Alliance and he was the driving force behind instituting the Rooney rule as I hiring practice in the national shirow all league and John's point from the start was I just need interviews because if a young assistant coach gets interviewed a couple of times times it gets reported in his name gets out there and if another owner sees that name enough over maybe a couple of years hiring cycles else maybe an owner says chee that guy. He's getting a lot of interviews. Maybe I should bring in. Maybe I should be more open minded to him. But if you're GONNA curse because if I get a a lot of interviews and I'm not getting hired was wrong why here the me getting hired cave liability with that. But John's point in the end was I'd rather have interviews than not have interests. Okay okay so let's go back to the stat that I use last week. The Institute of Diversity and Ethics In sports twenty nine thousand nine racial and gender report card for the National Football Bali. The League got actually an a plus for hiring of color. Assistant coaches right a sit a plot. Oh that's progress right. It got a deep loss for hiring head coach of Color White eight-plus assistance d-plus head head coaches. There's a big disconnect there and it shows you. That owners are fine. Oh hire two or three black assistant fine with that but nope nope. I don't want to head coach to be black. Right gives quite to the restaurant you can cook. You'll be in the bank but Michelle not the bridge. I roll up now okay so when I texted back and forth last we can use this last week of John Wooten just beside himself now. He is devastated by this this development his point was that only one. GM Chris Grin Miami. Point out is use. John's word heartbreaking because it could start with the GM right a black GM of or of color could be more open minded to say to the owner. Hey listen this guy is really bring him in. Let me let me introduce him to you right. The conduit to the owner can be stronger. Iran have I don't know six or eight black. GM right right. We've had them around the league four or but all of a sudden there's a dearth to rape Barma with Barma within Cleveland. He'd Gone Rick Smith who I know very well be in Denver. He interviewed for The Washington. Ashington John Daniel Snyder said head coach could be a head coach. Basically general manager after the Washington like who are the head coaching after the draft. The General Mattis. Okay so sometimes there is group think or shink sheep among the owners because in the end they do want to win right. And if they're looking around the League league and that black head coaches really successful they say well I want one of those. I want to go that direction right well. There was one black head coach who started to have success late in the year ear and he happened to be allied with Chris. Clear in Miami and Brian Floors off the Patriots. Well they started out all time badge for about what seven seven games fifty. Nine seven opening renders and then they basically it felt like they turned the whole roster iside down which they needed to do and then all of a sudden the last nine games they go five and four they upset the eagles and then they went to foxborough and just basically ended the season. I thought for the new New England Patriots playoff teams right. Okay so all the sudden Brian floor floor with the help of Chris greer. They're having big success. It looks like it's headed in the right drug us us but it wasn't enough of a splash to create momentum through the hiring process and right because John Wooden again texted me back with so many names he said we have so many in the pipeline. Who already started with Eric? B Enemy and Chris Rock. I think Chris Shaw Bad Year on defense but when I watch him interviewed when I watch his body language. It's a stunt man he's he's got. CEO Written all over him. He looks like a commanding officer to me. There's not enough black head coaches skip. Because because you look you look at Mike McCarthy guest job he hires the guy that gave him his opportunity coordinator fifteen years ago so you see the circle. We'll skip once you become a head coach. What do you do you go to the combine? You go to say elbow you got your drake. He goes to the coaches meeting and Yada Yada Yada and to connect with the boom boom boom right right. So if I'm not in that Lou. How do I get into loops? Because a rid of staff they said eighty percent of the jobs are never posted so in other worth people get hired somebody a friend or family member is not what you know who you know There in live the roof. It does house so to finish John. Bruton's list of pipeline candidates being AMEE. Chris Rashard Robert Sala. He threw Jim Caldwell on his list. Is Jim Colwell was highly successful zestful. Jim called wheel lost his jaw. Going nine and seven in two years Matt Patricia has nine total win and he's still got a job now he goldwell still doesn't have another job he in four years. He went to the playoffs twice in the last year he went nine and seven and they said well you know we need to move in a different direction. uh-huh and the guy that's replaced has yet to win nine total games in two years. Do you still own a still on the clock. Okay Steve wilks got one shot in time. I'm one year in Arizona and he was gone. He's now the defensive coordinator in Cleveland which probably didn't help his cause this year that much but I don't hear his name no in Cleveland right right on the list. And then there's Terrel Austin who's young stripes potential star coach and John Wootton into his list with Marvin Lewis who he thinks deserves a second shy right. Okay so Jerry. Jones did observe in qualified for the Rooney rule by bringing in. I Marvin Lewis. I think Jerry was shrewd operating waiting there. Because he didn't pick a young like like Chris Rashard type interview him because of Jerry had interviewed a young potential upcoming head. Black coach right. There's more pressure on Jerry. What was wrong with right? What's the problem exactly? He went to Marvin Lewis because he thinks Marvin Lewis is kind of old news right right. He got his longtime time shot in Cincinnati. Listen I still think Marvin did a good job job seriously. Yes okay he went. Oh and seven in the playoffs but still it was Andy Dalton Alton you re you with covering the NFL and you remember what Cincinnati before. Marlene got there was John. Carter number one overall. You Got David Cleland with the fourth. The fourth picket. You got big day to day and Wilkerson purse around the second pick in the draft year after year after a year people. Forget what I know. Marvin didn't win a playoff game. But they weren't even getting close to the playoffs for Marvin got there. No so I was disappointed in Jerry because you know my heart Hartz. I'd love to see Jerry Jones higher black head coach and I think I probably won't live long enough or Jerry will live long enough to know.

Frank Gore Won't Return vs. Vikings with Foot Injury, Reportedly Has Sprain
"Next thing, you know, it's fourth and thirty for Indianapolis. It's fun to sort of observe all the games taking place at one time. I Lamar Jackson throw to somebody attempt to throw titan Mark Andrews, hit a defender in the back hawk the mar a thrower is still a work in progress. Yes, worker progress is putting it lightly. I mean, he just has to, you know, a lot of time with quarterbacks no matter how good or or, you know, whatever the scouting report says about you. We can't see you at your best until you're comfortable. And when I watch him throw the football when I watch him try to dissect defenses. I don't see a guy who feels comfortable yet. Which is why I think you've. Verse two running a lot because that's the thing that makes them feel the most confident so he asked to become comfortable as a passer, and then we can kind of make the determination of whether or not he has the ability of the thrower right on cue. I see him rush for about eight yards for the Baltimore Ravens him or Josh Allen. Who's been the more impressive runner to you. Because Allen's doing it on non design runs. Lamar. The design stuff. Yeah. I mean, I think they're both impressive. I think Josh Allen is just the one that surprises me more. I didn't expect him to be able to Russia the level. He is because he didn't Lamar Jackson had incredible Russian production. Yeah. We knew it. But not nearly what Lamar Jackson exactly we've got an update here. Coming up. We have an update from the Bengals do we have this. We have the update yet. I'll take it myself Joe mixing the Cincinnati bangles on fourth down plunges into the end zone. Hawk fourteen. Nothing to fight Marvin Lewis. Now that they're getting after man didn't after China China. Make a case here. Trying to make the case are the Bengals for I don't know maybe saving Marvin job like that. To write technically. But it doesn't look good five eight they are technically in hunt. But it's gonna take a lot of work. I guess like are they playing are. They playing to save Marvin job right now is that is that your interpretation of what's left in this season. It's a very good question. I'll have to take the break to to figure out. Okay. Good enough wants to talk about that later on throughout the show. We continue to see if they can lay it on the Oakland, Raiders, the raiders who've been frisky recently, not so frisky today. The Stephen A. Smith Show
Did Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy deserve to get fired?
"Is not to say that Mike McCarthy didn't deserve to be a head. Coach is not to say that he did a terrible job because he did it. He's proven to be a good coach. And it may very well be that he deserves to be someplace else. I'm certainly not gonna sit up here and say that Mike McCarthy doesn't deserve to be a head coach in the league as long as Jason Garrett, and Marvin Lewis is still head coaches in the league, I'm not gonna do that. I'm not gonna do that. Especially Marvin Lewis. These Jason gave wanna play off game is more than I can say for Marvin Lewis hasn't wanna play off game sixteen years, Mike McCarthy's a Super Bowl champion. I think that ultimately the indictment against Mike McCarthy is very very simple, ladies and gentlemen. When you are coaching. Arguably the greatest talent we have ever seen at the quarterback position in NFL history. You gotta have more than one Super Bowl championship in more than one Super Bowl appearance to show for it. You have to have that Mike because he didn't have that. You can't have Arron Rogers questioning the play calling. You can't have him chagrined over the personnel. That surrounding him ask why that's the biggest defense that I have for Mike McCarthy. He he isn't the only one that needs to needed to go. I think I don't have any problem with Mark Murphy, the presidency yo for the Green Bay Packers going. I mean, you don't wanna had Ted Thompson up in there as a GM before you put. We assign them to consultants position. Brian Khuda Kint good a cancer. We don't know what he's capable of. He clearly wants to move into different direction and have his own guy. That's fair enough. But under Mike are under under a Murphy, you had a regime that did not respect ariza's enough. Didn't show him the courtesy and respect you deserve. You got rid of the quarterbacks. Coach alexan- pelt. You didn't even consult with Andrew with Rogers. How do you have a quarterback coach and not consult with Amer Rogers before letting him go? How do you do that? How do you do that? I remember one time I was told Aaron Rodgers walked into their office. They told him to get the hell out shut up. You play. We run organization. That's how this works really, really. I want to walk around here and act like you know, what Aaron Rodgers listen. He's not having a greatest year. Yeah. Absolutely. Right. He's not in that. Absolutely. Right. Eras is not having the greatest year. Nobody's gonna make that defense. He's not gonna make that defensible himself. He ain't blind. He could see understands, but we're talking about eras who will who will saunter who will cruise into the hall of fame first ballot without question. And gentlemen, Aaron Rodgers has twenty one touchdowns and just one interception on this season. And that's a down year for him. That's how lethal he is. That's how great he is. We are talking about a man with a career ninety eight and fifty five and one record. We are talking about a man, then it's completed sixty four point eight percent of his passes. First career. We are talking about a man that has done this at the frozen tundra lamb Lambeau Field for his career, and he is still passing over forty two thousand yards. We are talking about a man that's exceeded. What some would label top-five quarterback in NFL history who's passed over seventy thousand yards and Brett farve. And nobody would tell you that bradfo was better than that Rogers. That's how great Aaron Rodgers is. That's how great Aaron Rogers has been. And so guess what? If he's not feeling a coach, if he's not happy, or whatever the case may be you better pay attention.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh emphatically defends Lamar Jackson's throwing ability
"Don't run forever in the NFL sooner or later, they get hooked. Then ravens head coach. John Harbaugh was adamant in his defensive Jackson. Paul's out there running around. You can do. All right. Thrower. He's wrong. And kitchen throws a quarterback. All right. He's a quarterback. Questions with. So I don't. The question we will continue to see a Mark Jackson his AAC learner back. It was clear that that message was not just for Marvin Lewis. I mean, this is obviously a question that he's been answering or hearing comments about over a long period of time. And now he wants to address it. I don't even think he was looking to address that question. I think he woke up that morning. And he had decided he was going to do that. No matter what questions he was asked. If you see that whole footage the question he was asked was not even directly about Lamar Jackson the past. There was like is he going to pass more and he went on his diatribe. I think what he wanted to do right there within a message to his team and send a message to Lamar Jackson. I think John Haubert is one of the best coaches in the NFL, particularly at the inner locker room dynamics. And he's taking this opportunity to speak directly to his team. And let them know that he has their back, and I think Lamar Jackson as I mentioned earlier, I think he's going to be their quarterback in the for the foreseeable future. Clearly, he's the quarterback over the future. But does that future mean right now there's a team in playoff contention? You believe he keeps that job the rest of this year. I believe right now they are technically in the playoffs. Lamar Jackson keep that job for the rest of the season because I also agree with and while all of

First Things First
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield is giving the city a reason to believe
"To me. I don't think you need a offense of coach to get the best out of the Baker Mayfield. I believe you can get a great offense coordinator, I would go for the best coach because they got some good defense. Personnel to this just is valuable and has to be developed dislike the offense of town this division. Look at the coaches Cincinnati Marvin Lewis, what does he coach defensive? Okay, horrible. He's especially item. But he's a special teams coach and my Tomlin what's his specialty defense. So the defense of coaches have done well in that division, and it's a rough rugged division weather plays a part. So I don't believe that you just fall into the trap that. Oh, I got a higher offense of mine. Just because McVay Sam McVeigh's thirty to have we ever seen Sean McVay before maybe maybe Shanahan. Maybe the first shown him before Kyle his dad your member when he was that age. He was one of those bright young minds and everything, but shall McVeigh's just aren't out there running up and down the street. So I just think people are are looking at this wrong way thinking that all I gotta get an offense of coats for Baker Mayfield. I believe in Bruce Arians coaching ability, but I don't know of his style, and that stolen the ball down the field in this new NFL is the best thing for Baker Mayfield or a young quarterback trying to be successful in if they are going to go with an offense of coach all tell you a guy as far as getting the most out of that defense. I would look to his defensive coordinator. And that's guy thinks going to be bailable here in a few weeks. And that's Todd Bowles. I think if you are whomever whatever position you go with as far as the head coach offense of minded head coach defensive-minded head coach to coordinator on the opposite side of the ball becomes critical. Now, I don't know who the hot up and coming coordinators are I know the coordinators who could become head coaches are. But the guys were about ready to become coordinators on the offensive side. The Browns could hire
